It's one of the best indie dance crossovers since Loaded and is a strong contender for the Devil's top tracks of 2016 and there's still 9 months to go. <br /><br />The video, choregraphed by <a href="http://www.parrisgoebel.com/biography.html">Paris Goebbel</a> and featuring <a href="https://www.facebook.com/ReQuest-Dance-Crew-134105033297765/">Request Dance Crew</a>, is one of the best you'll see this year. As you might expect from the album title it's a batch of songs that are smooth and gentle on the surface with something much darker lurking beneath. It's a set of seemingly sweet and tender lullabies that take you by the hand and lead you to a world of fear, loss and betrayal.<br /><br />The album opener, the ominously titled <i>A Matter of Life and Death,&nbsp;</i>starts off as a passive aggressive acoustic lullaby to a failed relationship before dropping the passive and ramping up the aggressive, with a feet stamping, wailing "no, no I won't go". Warming to his theme of gentle horror Louis launches into the exceptional <i>You Did This To Me </i>another seemingly placid and tender song that at first listen sounds like a love song before revealing itself as something much darker and deeper. The song's true character is laid bare with lyrics like "the venom now runs deep". A relationship has clearly hit troubled times sending our protagonist into a spiral of barely repressed anger and despair. The accompanying video of Louis having a meltdown merely confirms the suspicions that the relationship has left mental scars that are going to take some time to heal.<br /><br />With titles like the aforementioned <i>A Matter of Life and Death</i>, <i>Final Voyage</i> and <i>Before It's Too Late</i> it's clear that Louis' debut solo album is not going to be a barrel of laughs and any doubt you may have is extinguished by Faith in Myths when he sings "it ain't joy we measure love in it's pain". Even a proposal of marriage, the mainstay of romantic fiction, comes with the less than romantic "for love or fear it doesn't matter it's all the same thing around here". For Louis getting married is something to do because "death is at the bar rattling his cup" and if you want to tie the knot you better hurry up "before we waste away and decay"(<i>Before It's Too Late</i>). Then, when the bride eventually gets to the eve of her wedding day she tragically passes away, her bouquet a wreath and her wedding dress adorning a scarecrow (<i>Scarecrow</i>). Louis' take on love strips away doves and heart, the flowers the fairytales to expose the heartache and pain beneath. Today if you're not faking it you're not making it so where does that leave bands like Liverpool folkies <b>Windmill</b> with their natural beauty, pure unadulterated sounds and not even the merest hint of artificial fakery? It leaves them as outsiders and the Devil loves outsiders.<br /><br />On their new album, <i>Wanderlust,&nbsp;</i>the scouse 6 piece serve up 10 serene, bewitching songs that are a welcome break from the mechanically enhanced monstrosities that dominate the airwaves. It's the aural equivalent of taking a break in a remote country cottage with no access to wifi, the musical equivalent of a digital detox.<br /><br />The album launches with <i>Birdman</i>, their debut single from 2014, a rare beauty that's reminiscent of Fleetwood Mac at their most alluring. Follow-up single <i>Where Are You Know </i>is a beguiling<i>&nbsp;</i>warning<i>&nbsp;</i>of the problems caused by<i>&nbsp;</i>the consumerist world of 2016 where anything is "just a click away...made by children far away". It would be easy to dismiss this as the unrealistic musings of a bunch of dreamers but, as Lennon once said, "they're not the only ones" asking if there's another way.<br /><br />The dreamy, almost spiritual, sound of Wanderlust's first three tracks set a marker for the rest of album with tracks including <i>How Many Times</i>, <i>Jenny's Gone</i>, <i>Sunflower</i>, and <i>Clouds</i> seeping into your consciousness like butter melting into hot toast without the unwanted calories. The album finishes, and peaks, with the dreamy, soothing sounds of the epic 7 minute long&nbsp;<i>Wake Up, You're Dreaming</i> and the enchanting <i>Follow You Home</i>. <br /><br />For the quiet, restrained, beauty of <b>Windmill</b> to break though the white noise of a culture that is increasingly strident and garish may seem like an impossible task but, as the band themselves say on the Wanderlust sleeve, "impossibilities are only impossible until we decide to make them possible". As usual the competition, which is supported by PRS for Music and the PRS for Music Foundation, has uncovered and discovered an exciting, electric and eclectic mix of the best unknown and undiscovered acts in the UK and Ireland. The 120 acts were picked by our judging panel, made up of 40 of the UK’s best online music writers (including yours truly).<br /><br />The acts on the longlist will now be narrowed down to a shortlist of just 8 acts, an almost impossible task given the quality of this year's final 120, &nbsp;who will compete at April’s live finals for a slot on one of the main stages at this year’s Festival. The winners of the competition will also be awarded a £5,000 PRS for Music Foundation Talent Development prize, to help take their songwriting and performing to the next level. Two runners-up will also each be awarded a £2,500 PRS for Music Foundation Talent Development prize.<br /><br />Over the next couple of night's I'll bring you the full longlist with some of my personal favourites highlights, from the other judges.
