Isn't it "funny" that the "Empty House Listers" and drop shippers never actually make that last statement?

We're referring to our "competitors" who claim to have outrageous amounts of diamonds in their inventory when in fact they are simply re-publishing the multiple listing service that is available to the trade by subscription at a variety of price points in hopes that you're naive enough not to realize that they've never actually seen the diamond that they are advertising for sale.

We could certainly conduct our business that way, but we prefer to take a more responsible, hands-on approach when representing your interests.

"EHL's" (Empty House Listers) or drop shippers may offer an impressive inventory at first glance, but in reality they offer nothing in terms of customer service, insight into the actual characteristics of the diamond, or peace of mind in terms of financial security.

Empty House Listers or drop shippers are a blight upon our industry.

It was yet another KP Intersessional. And it ended with yet another inconclusive breakdown on exports from Marange! Mounting frustrations, especially of the diamond manufacturers, found clear expression in statements from representative bodies like WFDB and the GJEPC which were forthright in their criticism of the politicisation of the KP.

While there is an opinion that differences among the KP members have narrowed down during this round, and only ‘lack of time’ came in the way of a final consensus, actual events at the meeting seem to reflect the opposite, with human rights groups staging a walk out, and the post conclave statement of the KP Chair, Mathieu Yamba, permitting exports from two ‘certified’ mines in Zimbabwe, facing strident criticism.

The emerging situation -- where some diamonds may be exported from Marange, but the accompanying KP certificates may not be recognised by other KP participants -- is complex.
One of the important players opposing Marange exports is the USA. And with the US government threatening to publicise the names of companies that deal in diamonds from Zimbabwe, most manufacturers may prefer to be cautious rather than risk being blacklisted in the world’s largest diamond jewellery market.

Meanwhile manufacturers have the growing shortage and rising prices of rough to contend with. Marange rough could ease some of these problems, and so the question uppermost in everyone's mind is – What Next?

The market is strong and huge shortages of rough diamond has caused the price of rough diamonds to increase due to excessive demand.

The flow on effect of the rough prices and the cost of cut and polished goods has followed.

Those large genuine dealers ( not like the online website scavengers who pretend to be diamond dealers ) with high overheads are forced to sell their diamonds in order to meet their overheads.The cost of replacing goods is becoming more difficult and the profit margins are too small to sustain sustainability.

A good example would be the now extinct Diamond Exchange Ltd.

This vile drop shipper which was an endorsed member of the impotent Jewellers Association of Australia took payment in advance for diamonds that were never delivered. The name has been stigmatised by all those unfortunate clients who were gullible enough to pay for an obscure diamond picked from a list somewhere on the other side of the world.

Nothing has changed. There will never be a shortage of suckers who are attracted by a low price when most savvy clients who do their research understand the risks and that the low price on a diamond doesn't necessarily mean a good deal.

There are still those " colourful characters " who hide behind their computers with their web designed diamond bait luring uneducated clients by preying on their ignorance. Many of these charlatans have no real track record in the diamond industry and have re-opened under new...
The deadlock on the issue of the export of Zimbabwe’s Marange diamonds has now persisted for over a year, and repeated attempts at resolution have all failed for one reason or another. Now this extraordinary delay has prompted the World Federation of Diamond Bourses (WFDB) to take the unprecedented step of releasing a public appeal calling upon the members of the KP “to resolve their internal disagreements on the issue”.

Though Avi Paz, President of WFDB has stressed that members of the organisation should not trade in rough diamonds without proper certification, clearly the manufacturing sector as a whole believes that the impasse is doing more harm than good to the industry. Paz minces no words when he says that further delays could “cause irreparable damage throughout the entire supply pipeline” and that “there is a real danger that the relevance of the Kimberley Process itself will be at stake”.

Debates, discussions and consensus are all useful means of resolving differences, provided solutions are found within a reasonable time frame and always keeping the larger picture in mind. The KPCS has been an important instrument in strengthening consumer confidence in diamonds over the last decade and more. It will be unfortunate if its relevance is lost in endless polemics.

Diamond Imports endorses the appeal for speedy and decisive steps to end the imbroglio over the Marange production.

If you buy a DIAMOND there is no fee
However there are plenty of other unqualified diamond vendors who will entertain your request and would be prepared to meet with you for free.
As they say in the classics you pay peanuts you get monkies.
Anyone who is worried about spending a small service fee for lets say a $10,000 purchase really needs to put their priorities in perspective considering the risks and pitfalls that meet unprotected diamond buyers in Australia.
I am simply just too busy to waste my time with penny pinching lookers and browsers who do not value my time or advice.

May 25, 2011

From bank finance and future rough diamond supply issues to insights into the critical new markets of China and India, technological changes and trying to foresee the buying habits of the younger generation along with an exclusive interview with DTC Managing Director Varda Shine, the 2011 Antwerp Diamond Conference provided a huge amount of discussion points.

Around 400 members of the international industry and media attended the May 23-24 event which had as its aim looking at where the diamond industry might find itself by the end of the current decade. Entitled “Diamonds 2020: A window to the future” and organised by the Antwerp World Diamond Centre, a wide range of speakers supplied an exceptional number of issues for participants to take away with them in looking at where the industry might find itself in less than 10 years.

Despite the hugely varied set of presentations and discussions that took place, the main themes that came up repeatedly were transparency, responsibility, category marketing and the opportunities that the future presents. In addition, the issue of worldwide category marketing of diamonds arose on a number of occasions as an important element in the future of the diamond industry in the coming years.

Participants were also...
Indian Diamond Demand Grows Faster Than China,

DTC Acts Against BPP Violators
~~~April 13, '11, 3:07 Vinod Kuriyan * Indian diamond jewelry consumption is growing faster than China’s, according to Diamond Trading Company (DTC) CEO Varda Shine. * Speaking to the media in Mumbai last Monday, she noted that in 2010, diamond jewelry demand in China grew 25%, while Indian demand grew 31%. In the last five years, she said, diamond jewelry demand in India had grown 50%. * Moreover, this year, Indian diamond demand is expected to grow by at least another 20%. * Shine and a DTC team are currently in India conducting their annual business review of Indian Sightholders. Shine said that on a tour of jewelry retailers in Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai, she found that there had been a strong migration to diamond jewelry. * Indian diamond consumption was currently 10- 11% of global consumption. It was worth noting, she observed, that the growth in Indian demand was based on the consumption of small diamonds in large volumes — 80% of the carats consumed in India are small diamonds. * In contrast, 80% of the carats consumed in China were of 0.5 carat and larger. Together with the demand growth in India and China, the U.S. market, still accounting for 38% of global diamond consumption, was experiencing a strong bounce back. * According to Shine, the U.S. market is expected to grow “in the high single digits” this year. Juxtaposed with the fact that no world-class diamond mine...
Budding actors are usually taught to beware the unintended effects of spotlights. By focusing light, they can bring out an audience’s curiosity in what is going on in the dark, off stage, especially if the actor delivers lines that have been heard before, or delivered weakly.
Fyodor Andreyev, chief executive of Alrosa, invited Bloomberg television to film him in Moscow without questioning him on the detail the diamond markets are curious about. The film was made on March 10, but not released until eleven days later. The timing followed the official release of Alrosa’s production and financial results for the past year at a meeting in Mirny, in the Sakha republic, on March 18. A company press release reports a session of the executive committee, a management group headed by Andreyev, as approving the publication of the company’s annual report and financial results, which now go to the board of directors, known as the Supervisory Board, for final approval.
Alrosa says it produced 34.3 million carats. A table prepared by the company indicates that it is the leading rough diamond producer for the second year, beating De Beers whose production was 32.997 million carats, up 34% on last year. Rio Tinto ranked third at 13.8 million carats, down 1%; BHP Billiton dropped further behind, with output of 2.9 million carats, down 15%. Earlier announcements suggest that Alrosa’s output this year will be no more than 100,000 carats greater. But De Beers has the...
Newspaper reporters are generally not allowed to use superlatives.
The objectivity, however, gets lost when you have to write about The Delaire Sunrise, the largest diamond for its cut and quality in the world today.
Mesmerising in scale and beauty, the over 100-carat Fancy Vivid Yellow-coloured stone by world-renowned jewellers Graff is doubtlessly destined for historic status and a likely home at some museum.
It all began in an alluvial mine in South Africa, where an astonishingly rare rough diamond of 221 carats, in a natural octahedral shape, was discovered.
Beautiful and intriguing in its raw, natural state, the stone exerted such a powerful magnetism that, despite the potential risks and challenges, Graff Diamonds Holdings chairman Laurence Graff remained determined to preserve the perfect form, a true miracle of nature, by transforming the rough into a square emerald-cut diamond.
For this audacious task, he chose his master cutter, a renowned expert with an acute sensibility, Nino Bianco.
Bianco fell in love with the article.
He spent months studying the stone, planning the angles and facets to create a poetry of precision that would maximise the glorious colour of the stone. It nearly took half a year to plan and another half to cut.
Bianco, sadly, died soon afterwards.
What he left has been a 118.08carats rich yellow...
*Exports rise to P20.8 billion*Weaker pula supports higher values*New mine contributes to total
Botswana exported P20.81 billion in diamonds last year, representing an all-time high in pula terms and signifying the industry's strong rebound from a collapse lasting approximately 15 months.
At P20.79 billion, exports in 2008 come closest to last year's performance, with previous pula term values ranging from P17 billion in 2005 to P20.48 billion in 2007.
But in US dollar terms, last year's exports are eclipsed by annual figures between 2005 and 2008, with 2006 being the all-time high at US$3.41 billion. In US dollar terms, Botswana exported US$3.01 billion in diamonds for 2010.
Bank of Botswana statistics released last Friday confirm expert forecasts that diamond exports for 2010 would reach historic levels on the back of a sharp recovery in demand, following the slump in 2009.
As producers notched up record prices for certain classifications of diamonds last year, analysts explained that the high values were largely a result of low production levels during the recession and restocking by polishers and retailers.
The record prices enabled Botswana to make history in diamond exports, even in a year in which diamond production was expected to be at its second lowest level in 11 years at about 23 million.
For the decade, diamond production peaked in 2006 at 34.3 million carats and was at its lowest in 2009 at 17.7 million carats. Excluding production...
India’s economy is currently on a roll. While many other nations struggled to climb out of the trough of the global recession, India’s GDP expanded 8.9 percent over the second and third quarters of 2010. And led by the gem and jewelry industry, its star performer, the country’s exports also grew strongly. Net gem and jewelry exports for the nine-month period from April to December last year were $26.72 billion, with loose polished diamond exports alone accounting for $18.93 billion.
But just like the U.S., India too is struggling with a huge trade deficit, projected at $135 billion for fiscal 2010-11 — the third largest merchandise trade deficit after the U.S. and the UK. The high cost of energy is the single largest reason for this. At 2.2 million barrels a day, oil accounts for about 30 percent of India’s total energy consumption. India imports about 70 percent of its oil, and despite having some of the world’s largest coal deposits, the country also imports some 10 percent of its coal requirements. Thermal coal imports alone in calendar 2010 have been pegged in the region of 60 million tonnes.
Adding to this is a heightened consumption culture that includes overseas holidays. Already, the Indian luxury market is estimated at $3.5 billion, with some analysts saying that given the right conditions this could jump to $30 billion in five years, riding on the aspirations of a 400 million consumer...
The Chinese gemstone industry is quickly becoming infamous for producing a myriad of undisclosed gemstone treatments that are flooding the market.
This, coupled with a willingness by the industry “authorities” to participate with them, has served to create the biggest gemstone scam in the history of the colored gemstone industry.
Inside this website you will find the true story of this gemstone that never was.....Tibet Andesine.
The importance of this story is not just the hoax surrounding Tibet andesine, the importance is that this kind of thing can and does occur in the colored gemstone industry with the tacit approval of the colored gemstone industry leaders.
The purpose of this website is to provide you with the truth of this situation as demonstrated by the gemstones themselves. Because while the various players have done a masterful job of putting a PR spin on this issue that has fooled the industry for years, the gemstones don’t lie. The truth of this story lies in the gemstones.
"They complain too much, and they forget that when the wind blowsyou have to build a windmill, not run for cover "
By Erich Wiedemann in Antwerp 15th May 2006
The Belgian city of Antwerp has the largest diamond market in the world.
Orthodox Jews controlled the trade for centuries, but now globalization has seen them displaced by dealers hailing from India.
When Jumi Hoffmann, co-owner of "Hoffi's Take Away" in Antwerp's Lange Kievit street, thinks of the future the Belgian city's Jewish community is facing, he doesn't know whether to laugh or cry.
He's glad his town is home to the largest orthodox Jewish community in Europe, but he's also worried sick that most of his 20,000 brethren could be drifting into poverty."The Yiddish mensch is losing his bread," Hoffmann says.
What he means is that Jewish traders have lost their central position in Antwerp's diamond business.
They control only a quarter of the turnover made; it used to be 70 percent.
And the downward trend continues.
Dealers from India now control the market.
More than 500 years after the arrival of Spanish and Portuguese Sephardic Jews in Flanders, an era is drawing to a close.
Every year between 1,000 and 2,000 Jews leave Antwerp, due to a lack of jobs.
Most leave for Israel and America, some go to Germany.
The only reason the community isn't shrinking more quickly is that...
Even the humble yellows which were always at the bottom of the coloured diamond price range have seen some incredible price increases in the fancy vivid yellow price range. Vivid yellow 2ct cushion and radiants in SI2 clarity are now costing approximately 35% more than what I paid for the same in 2ct cushion vivid yellow VVS1 ( if obtainable) just over a year ago.
It's almost as if cutters and polishers have finally caught on and as a result pushed up their prices. They are justifiable increases in light of the shortages and diminishing supply.
Those who purchased these fancy yellows at bargain prices when compared to current prices may have not yet realised. I am one of them and I am forced to increase prices if I am ever able to replace similar diamonds.
Congratulations to our clients who made earlier purchases on under rated yellows which are in comparison to other coloured diamonds still very affordable in comparison to the crazy prices of the reds, pinks and blues some of which are are looking very ordinary compared to the richness of the yellows.
But beware and exercise caution. Coloured diamonds are tricky to buy unlike their colourless counterparts.
Visual diamond comparisons, NOT price...
This may seem like a small thing but it isn't.If the website does NOT have the diamond certificate number listed then it is a bogus listing.It is as simple as that. They are drop shippers marketing virtual diamonds with either none to very little diamond experience.Make sure the diamond IS IN STOCK and has the certificate number with the listing and VERIFY THE REPORT NUMBER with the laboratory if possible.This is how you sort the genuine web site diamond vendors from the dangerous rogue traders.Drop shipping has opened the door for many new dealers, markets and also scams.We're referring to our "competitors" who claim to have outrageous amounts of diamonds in their inventory when in fact they are simply re-publishing the multiple listing service that is available to the trade by subscription at a variety of price points in hopes that you're naive enough not to realize that they've never actually seen the diamond that they are advertising for sale.*
Beware of Cheap Diamonds*Remember : Low price doesn’t necessarily mean a good deal*Visual loose diamond comparisons,
NOT price match comparisons, are essential whenever possible.*Read more here:*Virtual Diamond Vendors Diamond Drop ShippersDiamonds: Undercutting Prices & Deceptive Websites Investment,Scams & Diamond Investment SchemesDiamond Enhancement / Treated Diamonds Sold by Auctioneers *
By JCK Staff
Posted on December 21, 2010
The Gemological Institute of America Laboratory reported that a significant number of large high-pressure/high-temperature-treated color diamonds were recently submitted for grading. Ranging from 3 carats to nearly 20 carats, the vast majority of these stones were submitted without full disclosure. The color grades ranged from “D” to “J”, but most were “G” or better combined with high clarities. “The range of diamonds being subjected to the treatment has also expanded,” said Tom Moses, senior vice president of the GIA Laboratory and Research, in statement. “We are confident that we can identify virtually all these treated diamonds as a result of our extensive research in this area, which is one of the most important initiatives at GIA. However, we do not know if this recent surge in treated stones represents a new source or an attempt by some clients to ‘test the systems’ at GIA.” According to Moses, GIA is contacting the clients both to learn the source of the treated diamonds and to remind them that the failure to disclose treatment at all stages of the pipeline is unacceptable. In addition, GIA is reviewing each transaction to determine whether it’s appropriate to turn over relevant information to the trade organizations and law enforcement bodies. Rough worth $140,000 said to be bought from Lebanese merchant.
Dec 26, 2010 6:30 AM By Avi Krawitz
Customs officials at Ben Gurion Airport last week arrested two Israelis suspected of smuggling approximately $140,000 (NIS 500,000) worth of rough diamonds from Zimbabwe through Tel Aviv.
The Israel Tax Authority said the two men, David Vardi and Gilad Halachmi, were subsequently released from custody under certain restrictions.
Officials stopped Halachmi after he tried to pass through customs without declaring anything and found rough diamonds in his pockets which were brought in from Zimbabwe.
Spokespersons for ITA stressed that Halachmi is neither a member of the Israeli Diamond Exchange (IDE) nor is he involved in the diamond trade.
Rather, he is employed as a water consultant in Zimbabwe and smuggled the goods, without Kimberley Process certification, on behalf of Vardi.
The ITA reported that Halachmi claimed he was not told by Vardi that he should declare the goods at customs, only that he must hand the stones to a representative who would meet him at the arrivals hall.
Vardi was subsequently brought in for questioning where he confirmed that he requested Halachmi to bring in the diamonds, which he procured from a Lebanese diamond merchant while visiting Zimbabwe.
Vardi confirmed the stones were worth NIS 500,000 and that they did not have Kimberley process...
