Welcome to The Dick Turpin Roadshow, a humorous look at the Open Source community from comments on social networks, peoples blogs and websites to the mad bag lady on the street corner. Some, if not everything, said here is probably the fiction of our warped minds so there’s little point in getting upset about anything we say. Hopefully you’ll find us funny and entertaining, there will be some rude words so if you have a weak heart or are easily offended this is not for you.

Seven thousand elephants.

In typical English style the team kick off this episode by discussing the cold and grey weather outside. Yet again the boys are smug that there are no corrections from the last episode.

We kick off by discussing Microsoft Open Technologies Inc and their first year of contributing to free software. The guys struggle to find anything tangible that Microsoft has actually done but Pete lays his cards on the table and begs Microsoft to actually do something. We also hear how an anonymous MS developer has written a pretty revealing insight into why development of their kernel is so slow and Matt tries to discuss the "Microsoft's most profitable OS that's not even theirs." Android patents deal but Pete says he's heard it all before and can't be bothered with it.

"Pirating is theft you swine" Matt tells us about an interesting survey that maintains that for 10% of pirated material there is a 300% increase in legitimate purchases. The guys discuss the very fact that the Internet provides the ability to view what you want when you want and that pirating, in a lot of cases, can lead to people purchasing the DVD, books or merchandise for that downloaded show.

Pete proves that he is a moron and can't even read by introducing this item as co-funding, Matt tries to tell the old fart "you need to put your glasses on Pete, there's an r in there!" this item is in fact about a crowd funding project on indiegogo for purchasing a whole bunch of wikireaders to supply to, hopefully, new world students.

Archie Woof, woof
Pete couldn't find anything much to put into this section therefore Matt comes to the rescue by talking about his Manjaro install.

It began in South Africa
As you can imagine Pete is in his element when Matt starts to discuss the proposal for Ubuntu to create their own package management environment "one more step to my prediction" screams Pete. Matt desperately tries to point out that yet again this is just a proposal but Pete suggests that maybe he should take out yet another Ladbrokes bet. The boys fall about with laughter at the revelation that Ubuntu's servers are running a version of Apache that is 12 months out of date! Your data is safe with us.

TDTRS Forum
The forum is down! Matt has no idea when he will fix it, in fact he's not sure he wants to. :-(

The bra of wrong.

You'll be pleased to know it's a shorter show this episode. The team can clearly pat themselves on the back as yet again there are no corrections from episode 50 so to celebrate the guys try to master some tongue twisting Irish place names sent in by one of our listeners.

Having failed miserably to master the language of the little people Matt proceeds to make sure he ruins any chance of a knighthood by slagging off our current Prime Minister and his attempt to block porn from public Wi-Fi. Finally for this section of the show Pete tells Matt about Sabayon moving to Git.

Yet again the Arch Linux community demonstrates that it has the tact of a sledgehammer as Pete tells us about an issue that was shut down by the forum moderator simply because one of our listeners happened to mention that the hardware they was using was a Rasberry Pi.

Hold onto your seats folks Matt actually has something good to say about Ubuntu! Yes that's right, finally they have actually produced something physical in the shape of the XPS Dell laptop.

Archie Woof, woof Yet again the Arch Linux community demonstrates that it has the tact of a sledgehammer as Pete tells us about an issue that was shut down by the forum moderator simply because one of our listeners happened to mention that the hardware they was using was a Rasberry Pi. It began in South Africa Hold onto your seats folks Matt actually has something good to say about Ubuntu! Yes that's right, finally they have actually produced something physical in the shape of the XPS Dell laptop. Announcements TDTRS Forum The forum is down!
The big five O.

Yes that's right, we are 50. Can you believe it? It's a big show this week so let's get on with it.

We start off by talking about episode 49 and that bloody dog and what Pete would like to do to it. Matt says go home Google you're drunk and tells us about Blink or is that Bling? Having totally blotted out copybook with Google we then move onto a story about Microsoft crying foul over Google's dominance of the market.

Archie Woof, woof
We start off by talking about netctl or if you prefer net control now being the default in Arch Linux. Matt then tells us about his new install of Manjaro and how while it is currently slightly unstable he's getting to grips with it. Pete also tells us about his install of Cinnarch as you can imagine this turns in to a full-blown discussion about the merits of this fantastic distribution.

It began in South Africa
Welcome to our new Canonical/Ubuntu section of the show. Pete tries to start this section off with some praise for Canonical with the announcement of their uTablet, however Matt soon puts pay to that! Apparently canonical can no longer afford blank DVDs and will no longer be shipping them apart from LTS releases for locos however the boys come up with a novel way to generate revenue.

From the official Ubuntu one blog we hear that the music store is to be removed from rhythmbox, listen out for Pete repeatedly saying "the website" I wonder if he is trying to tell us something? Finally the boys get the chance to take the piss and talk about the controversy of the swirls in the Ubuntu logo.

Not content with being given the chance to repeatedly "Say my name, say my name" on tdtrs Alister decided to bring his annoying little friend along to the show! Only through painstaking editing was the annoying little runt removed from practically the entire shows recording.

It's a big show and we start of with an interesting movie, Edward penis hands. Recommended by The Skeprechauns which leads Pete to ask the question "What was your first porn film?" As most of you will know the Python name stealing dispute has been resolved but we thought we would give some closure on our previous discussion on EP48.

This is because we are in studio KY27 for this episode and Pete did not take Keith Milner's advice on his Samson CO1U microphone.

Following on from the Meh (Mir) topic on the last episode we talk about the display wars that are nicely brewing and Gnomes announcement to forge ahead with Wayland. Have you heard? Google is axing Google Reader! Terrible news, however the team discuss the merits of Feedly which every man and his dog is flocking to.

The boys discuss the brilliant post to The Continental Breakfast Club #TCBC on G+ by Patrick Middleton and the fact that #tdtrs is now listened to by royalty community. Matt finally gets to talk about Andy Rubin, who?, apparently he's some dude who used to work for Android? Finally in this section the team discuss a something that for once the UK government appears to be doing right with their "Preference for Open Source" pledge on the governments website.

Finally tdtrs falls about with laughter at one of the most funniest posts on the Internet at the moment "No need for UN intervention" claims Jono Bacon.

If you're a huge Ubuntu fanboy this episode is not for you as we devote a whole section of the show to kicking The Borg of Open Source all round the room. Matt starts us off with a pretty good topic of a company pinching the name Python for it's cloud service. A man who's swearing makes Pete look like a Sunday schoolteacher is next up as we discuss good old Linus Torvalds sticking it to Red Hat. Determined to steal all the glory Matt's tells us about the new Google Pixel the insanely expensive latest offering from, well Google of course. You've got to feel sorry for those poor hard up rock stars especially with all them naughty sites torrenting their music? But wait, what's this? They're actually making money now you say? Finally Pete manages to get a story in and talks about Miguel de Icaza flouncing off to the OS X community.

We're beginning to wonder if we should rename this section to "Ubuntu Watch" as we seem to always have something to say about the distribution? We start off with the terrible news that the gravy train of free trips abroad with lashings of free booze and sandwiches and all at Canonical's expense is to end now that physical UDS has been terminated. And finally yet another piece of the jigsaw falls into place for Pete's prediction for Ubuntu as the guys discuss Mir and it's underlying evilness. Question is, has Pete placed that bet yet?

This episode we are in Liverpool to attend the 300th episode of the Linux Outlaws, well we had to go or there would have been nobody in the audience. :-)

The show was recorded on Matt's bed and has only had part of Matt's recording tacked on and our theme tune added. Other than that it's presented as is.

No animals or bathroom utensils was injured in this episode although some ego's may have been bruised. We should point out that at the beginning of the show Pete is discussing the long queue at the Travelodge check-in.

This episode we are in Liverpool to attend the 300th episode of the Linux Outlaws, well we had to go or there would have been nobody in the audience. :-) Joining us is Oliver Clark from the full circle podcast and Pete really has it in for him. Announcements TDTRS Forum The forum is down!

So it feels like there has not been a show for ages? Rumblings and threats of bacon based torture have been made "You stopped doing the show then?" Things have been a little bit out of sync due to Christmas and Matt not having any broadband and then we had FOSDEM 2013 but we're starting to get back to normal.

We should point out that the team was just about to start recording when Matt spotted Shane Marks was on-line (It pays to log into your Skype account if we have you in our list.) So Shane was hijacked from his peace and quiet and forced to come on the show. Shane's sound quality is not the best, he was basically just using his laptops internal microphone but we think it's not that bad actually. As you'd expect it's a bit of a longer show but then the team did have three days of alcohol sodden events to get through.
