So you want to correct white balance in Lightroom using a white, black and/or gray card. Or maybe this is something completely new to you and you have no idea what, how or why you use a white, black and/or gray card. Today I will discus the why how and what a gray card is used for.

While having a correct white balance is important in digital shooting to get the best photo possible. Most digital cameras will do a decent job if left on auto white balance. However, sometimes they need a lil help to do this you can use a white, black and/or gray card.

More than often the most used approach when photographing is to leave the camera set on Auto White Balance (AWB) while shooting in RAW mode. One will then choose the white balance later in your RAW converter Program such as Lightroom, Photoshop CS3 or possible the software that came with your cameras. Here I choose to use Lightroom with an occasion of CS3 when doing post processing edits.

When accurate color work is required it pays to have a much more precise method of determining the white balance this is where a white, black and/or gray card come in handy.

I now carry a set of small white, black and/or gray cards in my bag and will try to always take a shot of the cards during the shoot. You can either fill the whole frame or just lay the card in the shot. Be sure you take a shot in every room you are shooting in. If you are doing a wedding or event photography.

Below is an image taken in flat light. The color of the image looks slightly off as Skyler my son skin is definitely not that orange, as his skin is more peach, white.

Using the eye dropper, Next I select the white balance eye-dropper tool and click on the gray card image. Because of the lighting conditions it still does not quite look right. It’s now to blue to me!

So I then choose the eye dropper again this time selecting the black card, Once again the image is too orange.

So finally I chose the white card, in this case it happen to be the best choice. As now Skyler’s skin color is more accurate. So in this particular case the white card happen to be the best choice.

Depending on the situation and location I try to use all cards. This allows me to check each one to see which look is best for the room it was shot in.

Next you then note the white balance values, Temperature and Tint, and apply them to the image that you want to correct. In Lightroom this can be easily done in a number of ways but the way I prefer is to create a Develop Preset of the corrected Gray card white balance for the location of that shoot.

This is how I do it in Lightroom

To save a preset you will need to be in the Develop module. Here you will be able to save the white balance settings for the white, black and/or gray card image as a Preset.

Click on the little plus sign to the right of Presets(use ‘Copy Settings’ from the main Lightroom ‘Settings’ menu). Just check the white balance box and then save as a Develop preset. Note: The advantage of saving the white, black and/or Gray Card white balance setting as a preset is that you can use it on any image you like in your Adobe Lightroom library.

Un-check all of the settings except for white balance.

Save your user preset with a meaningful name. In this case ‘ white, black and/or Gray Card – Date/ name of shoot’.

So now for the question where do I get these cards you are talking about. Well you can go on eBay or your local camera shop and buy the cards. You could spend a good 15 to 30 bucks on buying them. However, I have a better suggestion.

Go to your local Home Depot or Lowe’s, walk down the paint ill and pick out a white, black and/or gray paint cards. Look for the ones that have a wood back or heavy cardboard. Next drill a hole or cut a hole in one corner of the paint examples. Use a keyring to connect them. Now stick them in your camera bag!

Best part is usually you can pick up a few paint examples for free.

I have been doing some deep thinking lately. I want to give back something and help clientele give back while getting a great photography. So I have decided to set up my Photography packages to include a Donation to a charity such as Breast Cancer, Animal shelter Donation, and Children Education though Donors choice.

So if you are wanting a good photographer cheek out my portfolio and feel good you chose a photographer who cares. As with each package purchased I will Donate 25 Dollars to one of the three charities above, your choice of the three.

Keep a eye on the site as I will be adding didfferent charaties to choose from. If you have a favirote charaity you can suggest it and we may add it to the list.

Some people take there editing to the extreme. I try to keep my editing to an artistic technique. by giving photos a selective color effect or old photo look. Sure I will also remove braces and blemishes if asked but completely altering ones body image is not my style. I like to keep things as real and artistic as possible.

We where able to try a couple new things with this couple, as they where willing to have a lil fun while shooting, for that I am grateful. It is always nice to have couples who are willing to try out new things. One of the new things I was able to try was adding a picture frame in the mix to get a frames photo of the happy couple.

All in all I feel that it turned out good. I however do wish there would have been more lighting, as it was night time when we got the time to do pictures. However, as a photographer You have to learn to work with your environment and think quick on your feet to get those once in a life time shots.
