An Ever Evolving Technology - The Film Industry

The film industry has come along way from the days of black and white films. The films that we watch are not just in color, but they are the characters are now jumping out of the big screen and right into your lap with 3D technology. 3D technology has changed the way we watch movies because it allows people to feel like they are apart of the film. 3D is a great technology to use in film, but only if it is used on the right films. Films like Avatar, Transformers, and some animated films can be successful at the box office, but movies like Happy Feet Two, The Lion King, and Step Up 3D does not need 3D technology. Many people are sick of 3D and have been complaining about 3D’s less sharp picture quality, shaky effects that cause headaches and nausea, and skyrocketing ticket prices (2011). If 3D technology is added to the right film and the picture quality and does not have shaky effects then people may not mind paying to see a great quality movie.

As technology continues to advance, so will the way we watch film in movie theaters. The new 4D technology is now being tested. A 4D film is a 3D film with physical effects in the theater. CJ 4D Plex has tested this technology in Korea with the movie Avatar. The company incorporated shaking seats, the smell of explosions, water mists, and flashing lights. These screenings have attracted 50% more people that the regular screenings (Lussier, 2011). I believe if 4D movie theaters make its way to the United States, people will have the experience of a lifetime.

Film distribution has also come a long way from just being distributed through movie theaters. We can now watch movie OnDemand. Movies can now be streamed through your computer, iPod, iPhone, Blu-Ray Players, and video games systems. Soon movies may be sent fresh from the box office to your living room. According to Russ Fischer studios could broadcast new or recently released movies to cable and/or satellite subscribers, essentially creating a new release window prior to DVD release. In some cases, this might be the same day as the theatrical. If this happens people may not worry about going to the movie theaters to watch film when they can watch in the comfort of their own home. This can cause movie theaters to become obsolete. I personally love going to the movie theaters because it gives me a chance to get out of the house and socialize. Hopefully movie theaters will me around for a while.

Alternative Funding Sources

As entrepreneurs prepare to embark on their journey of becoming successful, it is not only important for them to research their industry it is also important for them to research every funding source they can. Researching multiple funding sources will help them locate their best funding options.

The first website I chose for this blog is aeoworks.org (AEO) or Association for Enterprise Opportunity. The AEO is a national membership organization and voice and voice of microenterprise development in the United States. This company has helped over two million entrepreneurs support themselves and their families through business ownership. The site provides entrepreneurs with information on microenterprise development organizations in their area, sets them up with a mentor, and the site allows the future business owner promote their services and products when the business is established.

The initiative of AEO is to promote interest and awareness of their members and the impact of the entrepreneurs. The Catalyst Initiative identifies, supports, and pilots opportunities to increase the capacity of microenterprise development organizations to accelerate and expand the impact of microenterprise in the U.S. The Capacity Building in the Southeast increases the efficiency and effectiveness of advocacy operations and state and national levels, And the Green Economy fosters a network to support members as they capitalize on the “green opportunity; identifying new “green” opportunities with and for their members and partners.

The second website I chose is Community Development Venture Capital Alliance (CDVCA). CDVCA provides equity capital for businesses in underinvested markets. CDVCA invest in companies in economically distressed areas in the United States and around the world. CDVCA requires for companies to have strong management, impressive growth potential, and the promise of high financial returns. CDVCA also looks to see if the company will create jobs and the impact their investments will have on low income communities. This site provides entrepreneurs will tons of information such as: events, consulting services, their public policy, the different programs they offer, and federal initiatives.

Alternative funding are great ways for entrepreneurs to get financing when the banks will not lend money, but there are some disadvantages too. Some of the disadvantages are offering collateral, have high interest fees, offer a stake of the company. Conducting research will assist you in finding the best funding option for your company.

Expert Views on the Value of Business Plans Part II

For the second part of my blog I will discuss what I have learned from the two industry experts I chose. The two industry experts I wrote about were Russell Simmons and Ron Conway. These two experts gave great insight on what they look for in entrepreneurs and business plans. Russell likes to make sure the entrepreneur know the industry they want to work in. Russell not only looks at the business plan that is presented to him, he also looks for the enthusiasm, creativity, determination and humbleness for the future entrepreneur. Ron Cook also looks for passion in the entrepreneur, he wants to see if they are excited about the industry they are going in, if they know they industry, and if they are ready to be dedicated to their company. He looks for the creativity in the way the presentation is being presented to him

After reading what Russell Simmons and Ron Cook looks for in a business plan looks for in a business plan I will ensure I know my industry very well, have a great backstory as to why I’m passionate about my business plan, and let my passion, enthusiasm, and creativity exude through my plan and presentation. I will show them that I know my industry but not act like I know more than they do.

The sections I consider to be the most important to the investor that is reading my plan are the financials, industry analysis, technology section, and the management section. The financial section is important because it shows the predicted future revenue of the business, and the start-up cost. The industry analysis is important because it shows the investor that you know I know the industry I am trying to enter and the trends. The technology section is important because it show that I know what type of equipment I will need to make my company successful. And the management section is important because it gives background and skills information of the management team, consultants, and advisory board

Expert Views on the Value of Business Plans

A well-written business plan is very important to have when starting a business and meeting with investors. A business plan is an entrepreneur’s calling card because it outlines who they are, their purpose, and vision. Having a clear business that explains your goals and vision will help persuade investors to help you on your journey to success. The two business experts I chose to write about are Russell Simmons and Ron Cook.

Russell Simmons is an entrepreneur, and philanthropist. He began his career by promoting New York City musicians in his early 20s. He created Def Jam Records with Rick Rubin and signed major artist such as LL Cool J, Run-D.M.C., Public Enemy and the Beastie Boys (Anonymous, 2011). He is considered on of the founding fathers of Hip-Hop. Russell Simmons owns a communications firm called Rush Communications, which includes an advertising agency, magazine agency, management company, and television production studio.

Russell Simmons has helped many entrepreneurs become successful in the entertainment industry. When meeting entrepreneurs Russell Simmons looks for the creativity, resilience dedication and hard work the entrepreneur is willing to put in to make their dream a reality. Russell Simmons believe ideas without effort is worthless. He looks at the enthusiasm, and determination in the eyes of the entrepreneur (Black, 2011).

Ron Conway has been an angel investor for over 15 years and has invested in more than 650 startup companies. He is known as The Godfather of Silicon Valley because he placed more bets on Internet start-ups than anyone else in Silicon Valley (CrunchBase, 2011). He was the Founder of Angel Investors LP Funds from 1998-2005, and he has invested in many Internet businesses such as Google, PayPal, Ask Jeeves, Twitter, Zappos, Digg, Facebook and many other successful Internet companies.

When meeting entrepreneurs, Ron Conway looks for the passion the entrepreneur has and he can tell if the person is very passionate about their business (Cook, 2011). While the entrepreneur is talking about their vision Ron Conway is looking at their personal characteristics. Passion is a key component that investors look for because it shows how bad you really want to start your business, and your love desire, and drive for what you want to do.

Seems like Russell Simmons and Ron Conway looks at the person presenting the business plan more than they would look at the business plan. They look for passion when the person talks about their dreams and vision for their company. I will definitely exude my passion for my company when I meet with investors because first impressions are lasting impressions. As investors go through the business plan it is important to have key sections stand out because an investor does not have all day to read business plans. Business plans are blueprints that outline how you want your business to be, and future outlooks for the business, it is important to conduct research and know your industry.

Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and an array of other social media sites have been on a steady incline over the past five years. This increase has lead to many directors, producers, and studios taking full advantage to reach out to the multitudes of users and their friends to advertise and market their projects without a high overhead. In most cases, the use of these media outlets can help to substantially reduce an advertising budget. The reduction in the budget allows companies to focus additional revenue towards making a better product.

Matthew Cherry, of Transparent Filmworks, has become an industry pioneer in using social media outlets as his main source of advertising and introducing his company to potential investors. Before resorting to traditional media such as radio and television, Matthew seeks to utilize a strong social media campaign for his projects. Typically, these campaigns are geared towards the sites that he is using. Matthew uses Facebook Twitter to tweet and write about how production is going for feature projects. He allows his Twitter and Facebook friends and fans to view and be apart of the casting process by live streaming on USTREAM. Matthew does not only promote his films on social media sites, he also encourage future filmmakers to not give up on their dream, and also gives insight about the process it takes to create a feature film. Matthew has gained a huge following on Facebook and Twitter by sharing his projects.

As a pioneer in perfecting this art of film promotions, Matthew has set the bar and serves as an excellent model to follow to ensure ways to reach millions of people without spending million on advertising. In an era where every penny counts towards something, Matthew is showing us that these pennies can become substantial dollars that a company can invest into other projects.

Social media plays a crucial part in the success of a film because media marketing is becoming one of the main marketing strategies used to attract viewers to different film projects. Social media sites create new opportunities for exhibition for independent filmmakers, by allowing them to show and promote their short film projects.

The Evolution of Marketing for Film

The days of radio ads and newspaper ads as the main form of marketing are long gone. Now, we live in an era of blog sites, Internet advertising, social networking sites, and corporate websites as the leading forms of marketing. If your company leadership isn’t well versed in digital marketing techniques, your company and its possibilities of great fortunes can be left behind the rest of the corporate world.

Digital marketing has helped many movies break the box office. Movies are advertised as backgrounds on blog sites such as TMZ, there will be a page set up for the film on Facebook, MySpace, and other social networking websites, trailers are posted on YouTube and other websites, and promotional website is set up for the film to draw interest. Hollywood studios knows how to reach an audience and using digital marketing has helped them to get attention to their films.

Avatar is a great example of how digital marketing helped this movies break the box office records. August 21, 2009 will go down in history because it was celebrated as Avatar Day. On this day 100 IMAX 3-D theaters worldwide watched 16 minutes of a new movie James Cameron was debuting, that movie turned out to be Avatar. Also, on this day Ubisoft debuted a trailer for the videogame based on the film, and Mattel introduced action figures based n the movie (Mendoza, 2010). This aggressive marketing campaign helped develop support for the film.

Social Media Marketing

Social media has helped Avatar’s marketing team reach millions of people. The marketing team used Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter to build interest in and spark conversation about the film. The Avatar Facebook page had over 1.3 million fans, the film’s MySpace page had 800,000 friends, and the film’s Twitter page had over 25, 000 followers (Mendoza, 2011). I have never seen a film draw this much attention on social media sites. Once the marketing team saw the success of the social media sites the media strategy moved on YouTube and Flickr, the two websites had a combined total of 12 million video and photo views. Marketing for Avatar did not stop at social media sites; interactive trailers were made where viewers can be apart of the film.

The type of digital marketing strategies that were used for Avatar helped the film become the biggest blockbuster movie of all time. Avatar grossed over $77 million during its opening weekend, and over $2 billion worldwide.

When I produce my first blockbuster movie I will utilize every aspect of digital marketing because I will not only reach millions of people around the world. I can also create interactive trailers, games, and websites that will give the audiences an experience of their life.

Mandy.com: A Great Resource For Filmmakers

A great website that was posted in the Google Docs assignment was Mandy.com. I chose this website because of the various services the site offers to filmmakers. This website offers production jobs, casting calls, classified ads, vendors, and a film market in various countries. This site is a great place for filmmakers to seek distribution and buyers for their film projects.

A service that is offered by the website is a listing of over 96,000 producers, technicians, facilities, etc.. This service makes it easy for the consumer to locate and secure different staff members needed to produce an adequate production. The fact that it lists all the different services needed in one location helps the consumer to eliminate the search process to locate someone to fill these needs. The time saved could ultimately result in the ability to produce better products and more products in a given time period.

The site also offers the consumer access to a venue to sell their used equipment or purchase equipment that they may need. This allows the consumer to search through a trusted reliable source. It eliminates the unknown of dealing with people that are not credible. Because the sites check out potential clients, it gives consumers a sense of comfort, and saves them numerous amounts of time.

The site also offers casting calls listings for actors. This allows the actors to check for casting calls in the United States for different types of productions for television, film, theatre and radio. The casting listings are available for SAG, AFTRA, and Non-Union actors. This site gives actors knowledge of potential jobs before any other site. The site also gives information about acting classes, digital arts classes, and film festivals.

Mandy.com is a site I would utilize to search for distributors, talent, and crew, and to purchase some equipment I may need for projects.

The Many Ways of Film Distribution

Technology has come a long way, and there are many ways films are distributed to the public. As technology advances so does the way movies are distributed. Films and television programs are distributed through movie theaters, DVD sales and rentals, websites, television, video game systems, and Internet. In the beginning movies were distributed in 2D, and on VHS. Now you can watch a movie in 3D and watch it anywhere, and on almost every electronic device made.

The aforementioned advances have allowed for the distribution of movies to expand. It allows for movies to be distributed electronically. Movie can be electronically downloaded to Blu-Ray players, laptops, MP3 players, and a host of other devices. This allows people to purchase movies in an eco-friendly nature. Movies are also distributed in combination packs that include standard DVD, Blu-Ray, and Digital Copy. This prevents companies from having to package three different copies.

A trend I see in film distribution is Hollywood studios and cable operators are in discussions to send movies to people’s living room just a few weeks after the films release at the box office (Anonymous, 2011). Executives from Time Warner Cable at a cable industry convention pitched the proposal in 2011. Warner Bros., The Disney Co., Sony Pictures, Universal Pictures and other Hollywood studios, is taking this proposal into consideration. This will allow people to watch new movies in the privacy of their home 30 days after the release for the price of $20 - $30 a movie. Although people go to the movies to socialize, I believe movie theaters will become obsolete in the future if a deal like this happens because it will be cheaper for a person to watch the movies at home, instead of paying $12-15 to get into the movies, pay $5.50-$7.00 for popcorn, and $5.00 for a soda.

I hope movie theaters do not become obsolete because movie theaters have served as an integral part of the social development of society. Movie theaters are places where teenagers go to hang out with friends, where first dates take place, and family members go to watch a good movie together.

When becoming a successful movie director, producer, or screenwriter it is imperative to protect your intellectual property. Protecting the intellectual property will protect the owner from accusations of stealing others material, and lawsuits. In a recent podcast titled Entertainment Law Podcast Episode 10 Gordon P. Firemark and Tamara Bennett had a discussion about the movie Avatar, director James Cameron and the many people that were trying to sue him for copyright infringement. Avatar was the blockbuster film of 2009 the movies grossed $2.78 billion dollars worldwide. With the success of this came many lawsuits that accused the makers of Avatar of theft and copyright infringement. The lawsuits are done by people from all over, even a guy in China is saying he wrote the storyline that Avatar used.. According to www.io9.com James Cameron is accused of stealing from 16 different sources. Is it remotely possible James Cameron could have stolen the ideas of 16 people, or that great minds think alike and they all had similar ideas? Art, film, and music influence people to create masterpieces, and creative people may use what they see to create those masterpieces. I believe this is what James Cameron did and made a fortune doing it, but he should have gotten permission from the owners of those intellectual properties before doing so to avoid lawsuits.

Another case that was discussed was an incident that involved Justin Bieber’s manager Scott “Scooter” Braun who could face criminal charges for a riot that occurred at a mall in New Jersey. The crowd started getting wild before Justin Beiber and his manager arrived and the event was canceled. The police informed Scott Braun to log onto Justin’s Twitter page and inform people that the event was cancelled. Scott Braun initially refused, but eventually sent the message out one and a half hour later. There were a number of injuries and six people were hospitalized due the fans getting upset about the cancellation of the appearance. Mr. Braun was charged with second-degree reckless endangerment and second-degree criminal nuisance. Managers have the responsibility of protecting their Artist and the venue has the responsibility of protecting the hundreds, or thousands of fans that will be there to see their favorite Artist. The Fire Marshall and the police should have ensured the fans are not inciting a riot, and if there are fans causing a chaotic scene those troublemakers should be escorted away and the crowd is still maintained safely and with authority. If I manage any Artist I will make sure that all safety measures are in place for my Artist, and there are safety measures in place for the fans because without the fans there would not be any successful so it is important to ensure the safety of the fans also.

The third case that was discussed was the movie The King’s Speech. The American Humane Association was threatening the Weinstein Company, which is the production company and the distributer of the film, because the film used the phrase “No animals were harmed during the production of this film. The American Humane Association says their company trademarks that phrase. Although the movie was made in the U.K. the American Humane Association believes that if a film is going to be distributed in the United States and use that term, it will be confusing to the public if the American Humane Association gave their approval to use the term. If the Weinstein company had used the term “This film is animal friendly” or a term not close to the American Humane Association there would not have been a lawsuit. This case is kind of confusing, but I know if I was going to use another company’s trademark I would get permission to do so no matter where I am filming a movie

Protection, Protection, Protection… The Way To Stay Lawsuit Free!!!

When starting, and managing a business it is important to ensure you are protected in every aspect of the business. It’s important to protect your name, your trademark, your patent, and copyright your work. You must also ensure you are not stealing anyone else’s work, trademark, or using anything close to their name. By ensuring you are straight with all of these aspects your company will not endure the process of being sued by people or other companies. I have learned of three legal concerns that I need to take care of before starting my career in the entertainment industry. These are a few real life examples the three legal concerns.

Getting Permission To Use Work

In 2007, a British soul singer named Des’ree sued Beyonce Knowles for failure to get permission to semi-cover the song “I’m Kissing You” and Beyonce used her version of the song on her deluxe version of the B’Day album. The lawsuit claimed that representatives from Columbia records tried but failed to finalize a deal to get clearance on the song (Diver, 2007). In this lawsuit Des’ree was looking for the distribution of the song to be stopped and $150,000 in damages.

As a screenwriter and director wanting to start my own production company I must ensure that I obtain permission before I rewrite a screenplay, or use a song in my film. This agreement must be obtained in writing before I begin to do any work.

Trademark Infringement

Lady Gaga is suing a company called Covent Garden for wanting to sell ice cream made with human breast milk and calling it Baby Gaga. The legal documents that were drawn up by Lady Gaga’s lawyers states that the product is nausea-inducing and intended to take advantage of her reputation and goodwill. The company is also accused of riding the coattails of Lady Gaga because they used a waitress dressed like the pop star to serve the product (Trademark Infringement, 2011).

When reading about this case it makes you wonder what can you trademark, and it seems like you can trademark anything from web pages, packaging, décor, even the color you use in your logo. New companies must be aware of other company trademarks to ensure they do not copy their trademarks.

Breach of Contract

Jack Nicholson sued producer Mark Canton for a $1.2 million loan that was done in 2002. Mr. Canton took out a 1.5 million dollar loan with City National Bank for 1.5 million. The Mr. Nicholson agreed guarantee and also pledged certain collateral to ensure repayment (Belloni, 2009). When the due date came for the loan Mr. Canton could not pay, and Mr. Nicholson paid the bank loan for Mr. Canton and entered and agreement with him to repay Mr. Nicholson by July 2008 plus 8% interest (Belloni, 2009). As of September 2008 Mr. Canton has only paid $1,781.27 and the remaining balance is $1,200,000 in principal and $48,000 in interest. The deal also includes that Mr. Canton is to give Mr. Nicholon 50% of any producing fees or profit participation fees he receives. Mr Canton still has not lived up to any of his promises, which is why Mr. Nicholson is suing him.

It is important to never breach any contracts because you may have to pay back more than what you owe. Breaching contracts is not only wrong, but also unethical in the business world. When a contract is drawn up, all of the details are expected to be met in a timely manner. Although life occurrences do happen, it is not the norm. These occurrences should not happen consistently.

New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival

It’s that time of year again, for the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. This event is one of two huge events that happen in New Orleans, La. every year. The Jazz and Heritage Festival is a 10-day cultural feast that happens every year at the end of April and beginning of May. The event is held at the Fair Grounds Race Course every year since 1970. The event draws thousands of people from all over the country to New Orleans for fun in the sun, great music, and great savory Cajun food.

There is so much to do at the festival. There are 12 stages that showcases hundreds musical acts throughout the day. People get to hear jazz gospel, Cajun, zydeco, rap, R&B, rock, funk, Latin, Africa, folk, and Caribbean music all day. The festival has had many artist perform on their stages such as: Aretha Franklin, Fats Domino, Dr. John, Willie Nelson, Gladys Knight, Drake, Wyclef John, LL Cool J, Bon Jovi, and many more other artist.

The festival not only allows people to dance and hear great music but allow the to purchase beautiful painting, jewelry, sculptures, and photographs that were made by not only local artist, but also made by national and international artists. There are artist tents that are set up which give festival-goers the opportunity to view and purchase Louisiana culture, heritage, and tradition through art. These items are collectible items that people can enjoy for many years.

Now onto the best part of the festival, the food, New Orleans has the best food and it will be showcased at the festival. Festival-goers can chose from hot sausage po-boy, crawfish, Cajun jambalaya, crawfish bread, shrimp bread, boudin balls, shrimp gumbo, Ya Ka Mein, etc… The food is amazing, and people from everywhere get to see how cooks in New Orleans throw down with food. When you walk through the gates of the Fairgrounds you feel like you're in food heaven.

Coming to the festival makes you feel like there's nothing more in the world than music, food, crafts, and friendship, because this event is an all day event for 10 days. And once festival-goers are finished at the Jazz Fest. they can go to the French Quarters for evening fun.

Artist managers have the best job in the world. They get to attend award shows, network with celebrities, and travel around the world with their artists. People do not see the hard work that goes into turning their artist from an unknown artist to a worldwide superstar. Artist managers must take on many roles such as: adviser, organizer, strategist, overseer, planner, travel companion, friend, detail person, and coordinator. Negotiations: The Key to Getting Things Done

Negotiations are not only vital, but a pivotal aspect of an artists development and career longevity. Without a solid negotiator, many artists may find themselves in a position where their career is cut short, or they finish a long career ending up flat broke. An experienced negotiator places his artists in the best financial position and the best position for the advancement of his career

Mone’ Walker has been working in the music industry for over 10 years. She has worked with many artists from Destiny’s Child to Nicki Minaj. She works as an A&R Administrator and Tour Manager for her artists. Today, Ms. Walker will join me to discuss how she negotiates for her clients.

1. When negotiating how did you use objective criteria to get what you want? Was it successful?

I scout the market for catering, instruments, venues, travel fees for my artist for when they go on tour and negotiate the best prices for them. I do not really have to negotiate producing fees because I know how much producers charge. When an artist is first starting out in the music business negotiating a budget is pretty.

2. How do you separate the people from the problem? And how did it affect the outcome of the negotiation

I try to do what is best for the artist by focusing on the problem, the goal, and the solution. I keep other factors, emotions, and outside influences out of the negotiations because if I allow these factors to enter a negotiation the negotiation will not go well.

3. When negotiating for your artist, have you had to use your BATNA as a last resort to get what you want? Was it successful?

Yes I have, I have to make sure that my artist are getting the best deal possible. Before I enter a negotiation I make sure I have the best alternative to an agreement just in case the negotiation is at a stand still. I like to think of creative alternatives that would appeal to both parties.

4. Have you ever dealt with any negative emotion during negotiations? If so, how did you deal with it?

Yes I have, I have dealt with negative emotions because I am female. Most managers, promoters, and other artist are used to seeing male tour managers. When they see me they think I do not know what I am doing and think they can get over, move at their own pace, or just not listen to me. I have to let them know I have experience in the industry, I know what I am talking about, and as long as you move slow your venue loses money and ticket sales because you have to pay the artist regardless.

5. In the negotiation process have you or the other party try to do any dirty tricks/tactics? If so, how did you deal with it?

I do not practice doing dirty tricks/tactics during negotiations but I have been in negotiations with some managers and artist that have especially in studio sessions. Some artist will not record because some things they may have wanted do not go their way. Some managers will lie to get an artist to the studio to work with them, but when the artist gets their check the amount is not what was negotiated. I have to then negotiate and find an creative alternative to the problem.

6. How did you and the other party work toward mutual benefits in the negotiations?

When working towards a mutual benefit with artists, promoters, managers, and producers we try to discuss the terms, brainstorm creative alternatives, and work our way to an amicable solution. Sometime these solutions can be getting a point on record sales, getting a percentage of publishing rights, etc…

7. I am going to name 3 of the 5 core concerns that play a role in negotiation. Can you tell me how each has played a role in any negotiation you have done?

Appreciation: When negotiating with an artist that is trying to make a comeback in the music industry. I try to make the artist feel welcomed, feel easy, let them know we know their background, and let them know the label cares and will help them get back to the top.

Role: I take on many roles when negotiating; I am the listener, collaborator, compromiser, brainstormer, talker, option generator, joker, and facilitator. I take on these roles to ensure the negotiation goes well, and I make sure my artist not taken advantage of.

Status: Status plays a huge role in negotiations, especially with A-list artist. The artists’ availability is sometimes compromised by the status and arrogance of the artists. Most artists are humbled and are easy to negotiate with but some artist will use their status to make negotiations difficult.

For Justin Beiber and his fans, Friday January 11 was the best day in 2011 because Friday was the premiere of Justin Beiber’s 3D concert film Never Say Never. This film showed clips from Justin’s childhood performances, his determination to achieve his dream, and some of his 2010 concert performances. The film is part concept film, brand consolidation, something that was designed as a keepsake for his fans and an introduction for the uninitiated to the pop music and dancing sensation (Olsen, 2011). This movie was on of the highest grossing movies so far in 2011 on the opening day in 2011. This movie had more sales on opening night than Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana: Best of Both Worlds Concert, which took in $8.7 million on opening night.

Never Say Never beat Adam Sandler’s film “Just Go With It”, which grossed $9.7 million on Friday night. Critics do not believe that Justin Beiber will not be able to hold off the Adam Sandler’s film when the numbers get tallied on Sunday. I believe with Justin Beiber’s loyal fans across the country, the teenage heartthrob will keep the number one spot, and beat Adam Sandler for the highest-ranking movie so far of 2011.

When the box office number came in Sunday for the gross amount of ticket sales of Never Say Never and Just Go With It for Friday and Saturday, the numbers showed that Just Go With It made more money than Never Say Never opening weekend. It was a very tight race but Adam Sandler beat Justin Beiber by $1 million dollars. Just Got With It grossed $31.2 million dollars while Never Say Never came in at number 2 and grossed $30.2 million dollars (2011). Although Just Beiber’s fans came out in huge numbers to support the pop star, it was not enough to hold off the King of Comedy Adam Sandler.

Both are great movies and I hope you will get a chance to check out each movie. One will leave you inspired and the other will have you LMBO (laughing your butt off).

Journey to Success

Success is not given, success does not find you, and success is not measured by how much money you have. Success is measured by how much hard work, time, and dedication you put into your dream. If you want to become a successful doctor you would have to put in long hours of studying, eight years or more of college and medical school, and work hard to after that to become a successful doctor. If you want to become a successful movie director, or producer, you would have to go to a film school, intern with a production company or major network, network with people in the industry, and work on as many film projects as you can until you become successful in your craft.

I am on my journey to become a successful screenwriter, director, and producer. I have been on this journey for a while because I have had many obstacles in my way but I will not let the obstacles stop me from becoming successful at something I love so much. I have always been told that when one door closes another one will open, and that is the way I have looked at things all of my life. I have always put myself, dreams, and needs aside to ensure my family were taken care of, but I have learned over the years that if I do not put myself first and work towards my dream, then my dreams will be lost and no one will care because they either achieved their dreams or are on the path to achieve their dreams.

This is why I have achieved the goal of a college education, because not many people in my family can say that they achieved a college education due to disabilities, or lack of motivation. I am now in graduate school to achieve me Master’s Degree in Entertainment Business, this will bring me one step closer to my dream.

It is very important to never give up on your dream, because you can become something greater than what you are now. Everyone has a dream, and it is important to lock in on your dream, learn everything in the industry you chose, and master your craft, because you control your destiny. Everyone will have obstacles in their way to success, it is up to you overcome each obstacle with determination, a positive mindset, self-control, and perseverance you will overcome the obstacles in your way.

Learning About Financial Stability

Many people in America are struggling to become financially

stable, there are so many ways for people to get into debt whether they take on too many credit cards, further their education, take on loans they cannot afford to pay, or just try to buy things they cannot afford. And before they know it they have more debt than they can handle. Most people are not taught the value of money, or about debt when they are young and therefore when many teens get their first job they spend their money on having the newest tennis shoes, hottest jackets, new IPod, and the latest cellular phone. I was one of those people when I first started working. I never thought about being financially stable when I wanted to purchase my first car, buy my first home, or starting my business. I just new these were things I wanted to do when I got older.

Learning the value of money, and how to spend money should be learned when a child receives their first allowance. When children learn at a young age about the value of money, and becoming and staying financially stable and free of debt, they will more likely save their paychecks as teens and spend their money on what is important. I now know how important money is and I’m trying to get financial freedom. I have learned that having poor credit and no money can hinder you when trying to start a business, purchase a home, and even purchase a car. Some employers even check your credit and ask about your assets during the interview process. I have learned to pay my bills on time and even before time if I have the extra money to do so. I try to pay a little extra on the principle, which will help the interest go down.

I want to own my own production company one day and I know I will have to make a lot of sacrifices in order to make my business a successful one day. Which I am starting now, I have cut majorly on recreation, dining out, and frivolous purchases because I know I want to be greater than what I am now. Learning about finance, seeking investors, and stocks, will help me a lot because I will have to know all of these things when running my business.

Life is all about choices and successful people did not become successful by wasting money, and not learning about finance, stocks, and accounting which are the three important factors when starting, and running a business.

"Why We Do What We Do"

The “Best of the Web Speech” I chose to write about is “Tony Robbins asks why we do what we do”. I chose this speaker because Tony Robbins inspires millions of people around the world with his speeches. In the video Tony Robbins talked about what drives people to do what they do, what drives him to do what he does and understanding the human needs. For 30 years Tony has been obsessed with “what makes the difference in the quality of peoples lives? What makes the difference in their performance? And how they contribute or do something beyond themselves?

Many people claim they cannot achieve their goals because they say they do not have the knowledge, money, technology, or the contacts to achieve their goal but Tony Robbins says you do not resources you need resourcefulness. Resourcefulness means if you do not have the money to reach your goals, but you are creative and determined enough you will find away to come up with the money for you goal. If you do not know anyone in the industry you are trying to work in, you will go to events, and use social media to network with people in that particular industry.

People need to focus on their decisions that shape their destiny; many decisions people make shapes their future and sometimes shape the future of our culture. Tony believes there are six human needs and they are certainty, uncertainty, critical significance, connection/love, growth, and giving. People can find ways to meet the first four need but until they grow and give they will not have full fulfillment of life

I really enjoyed listening to this speech because I want to fulfill all six needs; I want to be able to give back to my community and people in need around the world. When people learn that the world does not evolve around them, give back to others and show their human compassion toward other I believe the world will be a better place. I want to bring smiles to people faces, and bring them closer together through film and television and I hope I will be successful at it.

Nicki Minaj's Concert Review

In order for a company to put on a great event there are many things a company must do to make the event one people will never forget. Everything from planning the event to the execution of the event has to be perfect in order to ensure the consumers are satisfied and are having a great time at the event. Award shows, concerts, and movie premieres have to be perfect in order to attract celebrities, and fans. The event I will write about is a concert that was done by rap artist Nicki Minaj in New Orleans, La. on Wednesday, November 10, 2010.

Nicki’s Minaj’s concert was very poorly planned, the stage setting was half done, the artist was late, the meet and greet was one hour late, and the performance was two hours late. Nicki Minaj thought she could come to the venue late because her team assumed the club would stay open later than 2am. The meet and greet was supposed to begin at 8pm and Nicki Minaj was supposed to go on stage at 10pm. The promoters were mad and the crowd was getting restless. And Nicki Minaj was only able to perform a few songs before the show was to end.

Customer satisfaction is very important when giving an event because the consumers spend a lot of money to attend certain events. If the customer is not satisfied with the performance, music, or the lateness of the show the customers may want the their money back, start a commotion, or just walk out of the venue. Since performers make most of their money from concerts, it is important to give their customers/fans a great show and start on time, and the customers will always come back for more every time the artists returns to their city.

Teams in the Entertainment Industry

Teams are important in school, business, entertainment, and sports. Teams can help people learn from each other, network, meet new people, build friendships, and get the job done quicker together than alone. When great teams are put together great films have been made such as Titanic, Dreamgirls, Avatar, Precious, and the Toy Story collection.

Teams are very important in the film and television industry because with out teams it will be hard to produce a great film or television show to the audience. The film and television industry is huge and one person cannot put together a blockbuster film or hit television show together. There are casting teams, writing teams, pre-production teams, post-production teams, editing teams, and all of these teams are important for putting together a successful film and television together.

If I had to put a team together I would select people with similar work background to be on the same team, whether they are just beginning or experienced team members. The newest person can learn a lot from the experienced people in the industry. Having producers, directors, and screenwriters, on the same can help the storyboarding for a movie come to life before the film hits the big screen. When different people collaborate on a project a lot of different ideas come to the table and these ideas create blockbuster films.

There are many ways for teams to communicate with each other due to the advances in technology. I would communicate with my team through telephone meetings, email, text messages, videoconferences, and in-person meetings. Each member will voice their opinions on the projects whether they agree with the team or not, it is important to get feedback from all team members and meet in the middle to resolve any issues that may occur. The team will meet several over the weeks to ensure the screenplay, editing, or whatever task is needed is done correctly, makes sense, and will be well received by the audience.

Teams are an essential part of becoming successful because no one can do it alone. Every company, event, film, television was created by a team of people that had/has a vision, and they put their vision into action to create the great film and television industry today.
