Beginning Thursday, October 10th, at 7:00 a.m., Cook Concrete, contractor for City of Columbia Water & Light Dept. will begin pavement repairs on E. Broadway between Short St. and Hitt St. This work will result in a lane closure along westbound E. Broadway at this location, which will close the turn from westbound Broadway onto Hitt Street. The work should be completed and the road fully reopened by Thursday, October 10th by 3:00 p.m., weather permitting.

Motorists and pedestrians are urged to exercise extreme caution when in the construction area and use an alternate route whenever possible.

The City of Columbia Public Works Department announced today that beginning Tuesday, September 24th, at 7:00 p.m., Insituform Technologies Inc., contractor for City of Columbia Public Works Dept. will begin lining sanitary sewer lines at the following locations:

East Walnut between Orr and College will have lane restrictions on August 19 & 20

August 16, 2013 - On Monday August 19 and Tuesday, August 20, motorist will encounter lane restrictions for eastbound Walnut Street between Orr St and College Ave. The eastbound lane will be used to stage a crane to install pre-cast concrete panels for the Short Street Parking Garage.

During this restriction, flaggers will direct traffic.

Motorist, cyclist, and pedestrians are encouraged to use caution in the area, expect minor delays, and continue to use alternate routes whenever possible.

Stephens Bridges to Close August 9

On Friday, August 9 (weather permitting) both pedestrian bridge spans will be closed for the entire day due to a combination of an application of a protective overlay and warranty work. The intention is to have the bridges re-opened for weekend pedestrian traffic by the end of the day on the 9th.

Due to this closure, please very carefully, use the street crossings at College & Broadway to cross campus.

Seventh Street Sidewalk Project to begin on Thursday, August 1

The City of Columbia Public Works Department announced today that beginning Thursday August 1, J.C. Industries of Jefferson City, will begin sidewalk reconstruction of the east side of Seventh Street in downtown Columbia. This work will result in temporary sidewalk closure. Access to businesses along Seventh Street will remain open at all times during construction. The $327,777.95 project is funded by Community Development Block Grant, and the work should be completed by the end of August, weather permitting.

Walnut Street to close from Orr to College - August 1 through August 17

A number of construction projects along East Walnut Street between Orr St. and College Ave. will result in the closure of East Walnut from Thursday, August 1 through Saturday, August 17.

City of Columbia Public Works and Community Development staff worked with both public and private contractors to coordinate work schedules so as to close East Walnut for a single period of time rather than close and re-open the road a number of times for each project.

During the closure the following work will occur:

Killian Construction will be placing the pre-cast concrete panels for the Short Street Parking Plaza and removing the construction crane.

Grove Construction will be performing exterior work on the Northlight Building, removing scafolding, and constructing sidewalk along East Walnut.

Trittenbach Construction will rep-pave a section of East Walnut

Gerstner Electric will install new traffic control signals at East Walnut and College and complete the eastbound Walnut left turn lane at College.

When these projects are complete, some minor lane restrictions may occur while crews re-stripe the intersection for the new left turn lane.

Columbia Transit routes will also be affected by this closure. The affected routes are:

102 Blue Route

103 Green Route

104 Red Route

107 FastCAT Route

A map of the route changes for Columbia Transit is posted on the Columbia Transit web site at GoColumbiaMo.com All of the work schedule is weather dependent.

Motorist, cyclist, and pedestrians will need to find alternate routes.Transit riders may experience some minor delays.

Power is back thanks to fast work by our Water and Light crews!

It may take a few minutes to bring computer systems back on line but we should be able to process transactions and conduct business as normal this afternoon.

COLUMBIA, MO (July 23, 2013) - Columbia Public Works announces that beginning on Friday, July 26 between the hours of 9:00 am and 3:00 PM, temporary and periodic lane restrictions will occur on East Walnut between Orr Street and College Ave.

These lane restrictions are needed to complete sidewalk work on the south side of East Walnut. During the times when work requires a lane restriction, flaggers will be present to control traffic. When lane restrictions are not needed, traffic control signs will be moved or covered.

These temporary and periodic lane restrictions will occur through Tuesday, July 30.

Road Work on St. Joseph

Columbia Public Works will begin our annual street maintenance projects of sealing roadways, commonly called "chip n' seal", beginning on Monday, July 22 and continuing throughWednesday, August 14.

Chip n' seal maintenance consists of thoroughly cleaning the road surface, applying a layer of liquid asphalt to seal cracks, applying a layer of rock and rolling it into the liquid asphalt, and then brooming off the excess rock.

Sealing road surfaces with this method can greatly extend the life of roadways and is very cost effective. The cost of chip n' seal is one-seventh the cost of milling and overlaying a roadbed. The total cost to complete 30.78 lane miles of roads is $234,000. The work will be performed by City of Columbia Street Division crews. The funding source is the transportation sales tax and gasoline tax.

While crews perform the work, motorist should expect lane restrictions and delays. Once the sealing is complete, motorist and cyclist may experience loose gravel in the gutters and a few other areas. Crews will return as needed to sweep and remove the excess rock.

All work is weather dependent and the schedule may be adjusted accordingly.

We will release each weeks projects and any schedule updates on the Thursday prior to the start date.

Work scheduled for July 22 & July 23 on Saint Joseph from Park Av to Ash St.

Locust and Hitt Street intersection work will affect traffic starting on Monday, July 22

Begining on Monday, July 22 at 8:00 am, Cook Concrete will be performing pavement cuts at Hitt and Locust streets to allow for electric conduits and wiring to be installed for a street light project. The work will alternately close Hitt or Locust, however both streets will not be closed at the same time.

The streets will be fully reopened by 5:00 PM on Wednesday, July 24, weather permitting.

This work will result in sidewalk closures along College Avenue and Broadway at various phases; at no time will all sidewalks be closed. The work should be completed and all sidewalks fully reopened by Tuesday, September 10, 2013, by 4:30 p.m.

The City of Columbia Public Works Department announced today that beginning Monday, July 15, 2013, Trittenbach Development will begin work to remove and replace sidewalk along the west side of College Avenue between Walnut Street and Broadway. This work will result in a lane closure in the west southbound lane of College Avenue between Walnut Street and Broadway between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. The work should be completed and the road fully reopened by Friday, July 19, 2013, by 3:00 PM.

The Robots are Coming!

This was the message surrounding Ragtag Cinema’s digital projector conversion campaign in 2012. “Lumen,” the 8-foot tall robot sculpture and mascot built by artist Greg Orloff for the campaign, was donated by Ragtag Cinema to the City of Columbia in 2013. An unveiling ceremony for Columbia’s newest piece of public art will take place at 5:30 p.m. Friday, July 19, at the visitors center in City Hall.

“Lumen” was created entirely from found objects, and artist Greg Orloff hopes the sculpture can represent all that makes up a community like Columbia.

“‘Lumen’ embodies the cumulative efforts of an entire community with differing backgrounds, experiences, educations, perspectives and lifestyles. Made up of the dirty, broken-down discards of obsolete, forgotten technologies, ‘Lumen’ stands as a shining beacon of Columbia’s endeavors and successes,” Orloff said.

A permanent home was needed for “Lumen,” which led Ragtag’s Executive Director Tracy Lane to propose gifting the art to the city.

“Donating ‘Lumen’ to the city is our artful way to extend our thanks to our community,” Lane said.

“Lumen” was accepted by the Commission on Cultural Affairs and City Council in 2013, and the sculpture is now part of the city’s permanent collection of public art.

The sculpture will be housed at the visitors center in the lobby of City Hall.

“We are very excited to have ‘Lumen’ greet visitors and employees in City Hall,” said Megan McConachie, public information specialist at the Convention and Visitors Bureau. “‘Lumen’ is a great representation of Columbia’s commitment to the arts.”

4th of July Parking and Transit Changes

Columbia Public Works and Community Development remind our customers of the following changes to several city services over the July 4 holiday:

*Columbia Transit will run on Thursday, July 4 with modified hours. Service will begin at 2:00 PM, be suspended between 8:00 and 10:00 PM during Fire in the Sky, and resume for the final route run at 10:15 PM from the Wabash terminal. A schedule is attached to this release.

*Parking meters will not be enforced.

*Parking will not be permitted on the surface lot at 5th and Cherry on July 4 from 5:00 PM to 11:30 PM. Vehicles parked on this lot after 5:00 PM will be towed at the owners expense. This lot is a required safety zone for the fireworks discharge site for Fire in the Sky.

*Parking will not be permitted in the 6th and Cherry parking garage on July 4 from 8:00 am to 11:00 PM. Vehicles parked in this garage after 8:00 am on July 4 will be towed at the owners expense. This garage is a required safety zone for the fireworks discharge site for Fire in the Sky.

Soft Bar Closing Survey

Currently, last call is at 1 am and bars close their doors at 1:30. A soft closing would extend closing for a certain period of time--usually 1 hour-after last call. No alcohol would be served but customers would be allowed a longer period of time to linger. It's usually a voluntary policy and bars and restaurants are free to decide whether or not to have extended hours. This type of policy is in place in cities such as San Jose, CA.

While people usually arrive at bars a little at a time, they all leave at once. The thought behind a soft closing is that customers would now have a longer time frame in which to finish up and leave, creating a trickle rather than a flood. This can reduce crowding on the sidewalks, spillover into the streets, altercations due to overcrowding, and make it easier for people to catch cabs.

The city has asked for our input on the idea of soft bar closings. There is no specific policy proposal, they are simply asking our thoughts. We encourage everyone to take the survey and are especially interested in hearing from bars and restaurants that any future policy may directly affect.
