Greetings to All Students, Staff, Faculty, and Alums!

This is an INVITATION to you from the William Mitchell Art Advisory Committee!

The next art exhibit to be displayed in the William Mitchell Art Gallery Space will be:

“THE WILLIAM MITCHELL CHAMPIONSHIP PET SHOW”!

All William Mitchell students, staff, faculty and alums are hereby invited to submit any and all oil paintings, watercolors, pen-and-ink drawings, display-format photographs, and other works of art, displaying their household pets. We believe that since William Mitchell qualifies as a “championship” law school, our pets certainly quality as “championship” pets, well worthy of their own art show!

The show will run approximately from June 6 to September 1. Submissions must be delivered in person to Mr. John Biasi, William Mitchell Creative Director, in his office in LEC room 171. All deliveries are due in Mr. Biasi’s office by the end of the business day on Thursday, May 31, 2012. Submissions will be available for pick-up on Tuesday, September 4 in Mr. Biasi’s office.

Here are some ground rules:

(1) The pet(s) must be the primary subject of the art work.

(2) All submissions must be delivered in final exhibit-ready format, already framed or mounted, and with cords or other hardware for hanging already attached.

(3) At least one pet shown should be a member of the household of a William Mitchell student, staff member, faculty member or alum.

(4) We will be discouraging single snapshots, such as might be included in a photo album. Larger or compositional works featuring snapshots as part of a larger whole would be acceptable.

(5) Art works depicting all sorts of (non-human!) pets are acceptable and encouraged, whether mundane or exotic, indoor or outdoor, single pets or multiple pets.

(6) All submissions must be delivered with complete information as to the submitting person’s name and contact information, the name of the pet, the type of animal (including specific breed where known), and the name of the artist (if known).

(7) Please be aware that the Art Gallery Space does not have full-time security, and we cannot guarantee the security of any submissions.

This past year, Mitchell’s Black Law Student Association (BLSA) organized a pen pal program with Nellie Stone Johnson Community School. The purpose of the program was to connect Mitchell students with youth in the community.

Twice a month, the Mitchell students who participated in the program, exchanged letters with the 29 fifth graders in Mrs. Petersen’s fifth grade class. In their letters, the pen pals bonded over common childhood experiences, hobbies, and interests. The Mitchell students also spent time encouraging their pen pals to set goals for the future and continue to work hard in their studies. On April 20th, the Nellie Stone fifth graders visited William Mitchell where they met their Mitchell pen pals face-to-face, toured the Mitchell campus, and participated in a mock trial. The mock trial was by far the highlight of the day. The fifth graders came dressed in professional attire with their lines memorized. Reflecting on the mock trial, Mrs. Petersen said, “I was very excited and impressed with my students on how well they performed at William Mitchell. The mock trial was a huge success and they did an excellent job. Their hard work practicing was very evident.” The mock trial gave each fifth grader a glimpse of what Mitchell students go through while preparing for trial in their Advocacy courses. Overall, the BLSA pen pal program was a fun and educational experience for everyone involved, and BLSA looks forward to organizing next year’s pen pal program. The Pen Pal Program was coordinated by Allyson Peterson, BLSA Vice President.

The 2012-13 BLSA Officers are: Natasha Phelps, President; Allyson Petersen, Vice President; Erica Onyeagbako, Secretary, Shoubert Polynice, Treasurer; and Dana Beasley, Historian.
