The basement level is of course the kitchen with Kreachers boiler room, the first floor is the dining room, the second floor the drawing room, the third floor is Sirius’s bedroom (the walls have been covered with a grey silk just like in the book but the camera flash makes them look a lot lighter than they really are), and the fourth floor is the room that Harry, Ron and Hermione slept in. I haven’t yet decided what I’m going to do with the top floor yet.

http://www.surreyopenstudios.org.uk/

This year one of the things that I hope to do during the SAOS event is to work upon my Summer House. I have a good idea of what it is that I want to do with it… Last year while taking part in the scheme I worked on my entry for the DHE competition. I knew roughly what it was that I wanted to do, but did not solidify my ideas until I had begun work on the upper levels… My entry ended up as a ‘Lighthouse Museum’

The building with it’s doors open

The building with it’s doors closed, showing the subterranean levels in brown… Sorry no garden at this point.

The Reserve Collection – the bottom level of the museum, the basement store…

The Ceramics gallery. The shelves are formed from the ribs of the roof, with grain of wheat bulbs hidden beneath. The pots are a polyglot collection from the houses, as well as a number of pieces bought at Art in Clay last August at Hatfield House.

This is a view of the main entry hall, and the museum shop. In the shop I tried to use a compilation of all types of goods as is often found in a small museum shop.

Another view of the entrance hall. The carpet was made by using a paper punch to punch out shapes, which were filled with shapes cut from scraps of other carpets.

More pics of the other levels when I have a moment…

Hopefully there should be a photograph here of a property that I did using parts of the Gate House kit. It is an Egyptian Chicken Coop.

I got the inspiration for this from visiting Chatsworth where the chickens are housed in little villas. At the time I was rather into all things ‘tut-mania’ and pondered on the concept of an architectural folly built for someone into egyptology in a big way. I spent ages researching into heiroglyphs and their meanings before doing the writings on the internal walls. To begin with this took time, but as I went along I became faster and more adept. I also slipped in a number of images symbolic within my artwork over the last 20 years.

To get enough chickens for this work I raided the Banthams from another property, and discovered the animal kingdom to be found in my local branch of Early Learning Centre. I have to admit that the litter scattered over the floor is a mixture of hornby scenic scatter, spagnum moss, and wood-chip cat litter that I soaked in water to expand … a last moment solution.

As this is my first post I thought that I ought to let you know a bit about myself.

Many years ago my sister & I were given our first house, a lundy which I loved. I think it came from Harrods. This house had years of love (and abuse) before it finally ended up on the bonfire (a mouse had made it’s home in it while it was in the loft). By then I had moved on, I had discovered 1:12 scale while at college – a small shop in a local arcade (now long gone). I was enchanted by all the things that I found could be bought for a dolls house. Things that I could only dream of, as I lived on limited funds.

Then (some time later) I decided to get a house, the classic. That was my first 1:12 property. I decorated it with the help of my sister, and began to get furniture one room at a time. Furniture for this house has gone through phases. I would buy something thinking that would be perfect, then change my mind… also I decided on buying a second set of furnishings so that the house could be used (without fear on my part) by visiting children. By the time that I moved on to the next house the classic had 3 sets of furniture.

These days I have a collection of houses, some completed (although is a house ever complete?), some being decorated or renovated (the classic is about to have a re-vamp), and some still in their boxes. Amongst these is the summer house waiting for inspiration to strike. I have a rough idea what I want to do with this, but nothing solid as of yet… When I know what it is that I am doing, I’ll let you know … or maybe I’ll wait till the end of august on that:-)

At the moment my plans are centred around the Surrey Artists Open Studio scheme. This year I am planning a workshop on dolls house foods. More on that nearer the time.

When I can work out how I will add some pics.
