What the Yahoo Acquisition of Tumblr Means for Bloggers.

Yahoo Buys Tumblr

So Yahoo spent $1.2 Billion for Tumblr, a pure play, user generated content company. But the content creators wont see a dime, they have all each been now acquired/valued by Yahoo, and have to really produce a certain amount of content to help Yahoo rationalized the $1 2 Billion.

So Fame or Money? Were asking creators whether its better to build on a shared, "rented" platform where you gain the benefit of all the Tumblr users seeing your posts, but you make no money, own nothing and build up no brand equity; or whether its better to OWN YOUR OWN BLOG, and be able to monetize your own traffic and build your own brand equity.

So Pros and Cons.

Platform - Yes Tumblr is super easy to get started on, but so our wordpress and blogger.com and other blogger communities, especially if you use the WP Engine hosted setup we recommend.

Then YOU onw your blog, you sell your own advertising, and build your own brand equity.

No at the beginning, your sitting there with a nice blog, and no one to see it..... so youve got to write engaging articles, seek out like minded potential readers on other blogs and news sites and forums, and look for the BIG SCOOP that may set your readership numbers growing.

And the neat thing is as Tumblr progresses, that the exact same thing Tumblr will be asking you to do to get your blog with them noticed.... but in their case it will be for their revenue, not yours.

And to really add some credibility for your blog, try starting off with a generic keyword blog name, start off with a prestige that can be the first impresion your blog receives, and your dont have to explain what you do becuase your name says it all.. the worlds shortest elevator speech, im Page Howe with TheDomainBlog.com.. how tough is it to figure out what i do.. and im on to relationship building or engagement... now if your tumblr.com/domainsblog1 its a bit tougher, and if your pulling a name out of the hat.. Dom3Cool, your even further down the line from a credibility perspective.

So good luck to Yahoo and the Tumblr Bloggers.. but maybe try also building your own blog.

.PW Domain Names Lowest Price

New TLD’s are
probably the biggest change that we’ve seen in the internet since it began in
the mid ‘90s. The domain name system that was started to make the entire
internet work as well as it has for the past 20 years is based upon a domain
name system, or DNS. The DNS system arose early in the development of the internet
and we would like to take a few moment to take you back to the late ‘80s or
early ‘90s as to how the internet developed.

Some of you
might find this interesting but more importantly without the perspective of how
certain things originated and were deemed necessary you won’t be able to
understand when people start talking about whether apps will replace domain
names or whether one unified closed system will ever replace the internet, why
things started and why they are put in place.

So originally when the internet was started it
was set up to be a network of networks. Many computers or universities or
research systems maintain their networks inside of their campus, office parks
or business in many cases you had companies that were networking locations
based around the United States, or the
world, that wanted to connect them.

The idea of
a network of networks was born when people began to say What if we could
connect our network to your network? One of the fundamental things you have to understand,
to truly understand the internet, is
that it was originally built on the excess unused spaced that existed on
telephone lines at the time. You can imagine AT &T and then after it MCI and
Sprint and other private networking companies. They only used a certain amount
of capacity much like highways, built for four lanes, not always used.

So the
internet says lets uses that unused capacity so there is no added cost to the
company that owns those lines, the
internet started, was, and still is in essence, free. Why it’s free or whether
it will continue to be free for some people we will discuss at our next post.

But back to
the domain name system so different people started to connect their internet, their
networks to other networks, they would have to write down the secret code
number which is a series of four number combinations separated by dots that
each place is used to locate their network on the network of networks. So if we
use the word internet to describe what was happening at the time which may be a
reach, I think it will be easier for us to talk about it.

So the internet
at that time would be a way for me say I was at Caltech in Los Angeles connect
to you if you were at MIT at Massachusetts and I would have to remember that
your number on that internet might be 12.12.13.14 and I would write down your
name Bob at 12.12.13.14 and you would write down my name Page at 13.13.19.12
and we would keep those much like the phone number for each person and we would
put it inside a record book or keep it with us.

You can
picture the typical nerd at the time potentially with his pocket protector in
his short sleeve shirt carrying a list of the different network numbers of his
friends or business associates in his pocket. So he would have a list, or maybe
a notebook at the time the different places where he would connect to
everybody.

The numbers
insured each person can only have one address, otherwise the internet wouldn’t know where to
connect to, much like phone numbers, every one is unique.

So
foundationally, the key to the internet is that each IP number connects to one
and one and only computer or a series of computers on the internet. This was
incredibly important and extremely foundational for the success of the internet
that when anyone uses with series of four IP numbers they know they are
connecting to one computer, they know that the next time they type in that set
of numbers they are going to be going to the same computer and that they know
that if multiple messages or multiple applications are all trying to connect to
the same computer that they will all be connecting to the same exact computer
that they intended.

Now after a
while just like memorizing phone numbers becomes difficult memorizing the
numbers of each person became difficult. So you might create a program inside
of your own computer that you could use shorthand or instead of having to
remember 12.12.13.19 you just have to remember Bob and then Bob could just
remember Page and then he could just type in Page into his computer and I could
just type in Bob. And then what happened was each person had their own list of
shorthand that they may use to communicate. So I may have a computer that had
some games on it in Texas that I may call Games and someone else may have
someone that they discovered in Norway that had some great games, and they may
call that fun or games. Now if they wanted to send their list of cool websites
or cool internet connections to someone else and they send their own nicknames,
one person may get a list of nicknames completely
different from the intent of the other person.
So the next person couldn’t say hey did you go to games, because each
persons might be different.

So the
domain name system was born with the idea that we were to sign an English word
name to match up directly with these series of IP numbers and that there will
be one and only and only list that everybody would use to use their shorthand
names.

So these shorthand names became known as domain
names and the sole purpose of the domain name or registry would be to
coordinate and record and keep a record of what English word domain name would
match up with each IP address.

You would have to administer when computers
were going on and offline and whether different names were still being used or
whether names that used to point to one computer would now be pointed to
another computer. Instead on everyone having to keep their own track, each
network administrator could update their own records.

So say a
company like MIT or Caltech wanted to upgrade their computers and they wanted
to change their IP address or they’ve got a different IP address or they wanted
to add computers? This way they wouldn’t have to send their change of address
form to everybody else on the internet saying that their IP address had changed
they would simply have to change the record that showed what their name was say
MIT and then they would then themselves change their address and everybody out
there would be able to now still connect to their computers seamlessly.

You can
think of the internet domain name system as three important things.

One it makes
sure that each internet name matches up with one and only one computer.

Two it makes
sure that everyone is using the same list of names, and

Three it
allows each node on the network or each domain name administrator to administer
their own name and instantly everyone’s address will be updated.

So this is a
foundational part and it’s by no means a technical discussion for administrators
or network professionals there is an introduction for internet users those
thinking of investing in the internet business or those thinking of owning and
managing your own domain name and why the domain name system was originally
created. I learned about this as we applied for a new TLD in the year 2000
which was right about the time that the manager of this internet system ICANN
was being created. So for more about ICANN and the idea of TLD’s or new TLD’s
please read the next post about Tlds. Thank you.

after the gTLD hype try Shared TLDs, like .TV and .LA

OMG, how thats for trendy text speak, another post, twice in a month. get used to it Joe Q Public... so every ten years or so the Domain Industry hots the mainstream when talk rolls around about new gTlds. New gTlds are extension for domain name address beyond the already allocated .com, .ent and .org and their 10-15 counterparts (called existing gTLDs) and the 220 or so ccTlds allocated to countries like .uk for England, .de for Germany etc.

So we had the rush of articles and what im writing about today, the inevitable aftermath...... what i call .crickets. wait for it.................................. listen what do you hear now?

beside the magazines that are late to regergatate (spell that for me spell check) last months headlines, and the reblogging of other posts, your not hearing anythign more. Its a vacumn becuase in my opinion syaing we are going to have new tlds isnt the same as having them. and we DONT have them yet.

We still have objections periods, a new administration in ICANN, maybe in the US Gov, a United Nations assembly on tech governance, a now combined round of first launches, the bidding process etc etc etc.

Then theres still will the internet administrators worldwide actually be ready for the introduction of 200-1000 tlds and if one part of the internet doesnt recognize them, will that create surprises. Plus we have new rules, new sunrise periods.

So what to do now, in virtual start-up time were seeing companys' go with what they can get now and if you want a good keyword and cant get the .com, try some of the new shared tlds. Shared Tlds are those country code TLD's that have been marketing worldwide and included .TV, .ME and .CO at the top, .CC and .WS which are going on 10-12 years, and then some new entrants, .LY for url shorteners, and our favorite .LA as a geo TLD. See some great generics at DnStore.TV

Read more at www.thenew.la, or email me ot see some of the premium names we have for sale, and a free list of unregistered names to pick from, please use our registrar at TheNew.LA
thanks
Answer, nothing. My blog stays up on the worldwide web, i can look at my stats and 365 page-views. So the big question is will Google see my blog? Will they?

Well if i searched the words, the domain blog, i wasnt on the first 2 pages; so no "love" so to speak.

But am i in, the answer is yes- i search for "the domain blog" in quotes and i was the fourth listing.

Now the really good news is that if you type in thedomainblog.com i show up number 1, bummer is google doesnt think im good enough to actually be search so they show and suggest the user was really looking for THE DOMAIN Blog, about domains and showed others.

But step 1, im alive and in the ecosystem.

A couple notes on blog sport, the posting interface is nice, i just used the spell cheer or the first time, funny they want Google capitalized - i guess they don't like people using it as a verb. So you get nice squiggly lines to tell you where you may want to check your spelling.
