Motivations change little and self-gratification remains on high priority. There’s seemingly little difference except that now it’s wrapped up in a concept called Christianity (yet fueled by self-satiating agendas and goals). Most Believers errantly assume that believing is the end all of Christianity. It’s as if we say, I didn’t believe and I was a worldly sinner who God was displeased with and now I believe and my life is somehow magically pleasing to Him. The only exchange made is selfish ambition and motivation that's been turned from the world to God. This man once sought after the world to meet his fleshly needs and cravings and now he seeks after God and religious activities to do it for him instead. This is, as I often state, nothing more than a religious pattern of the world that is completely incapable of maturing one into a Father-pleasing son or daughter. The eros (self-seeking love) peg can never be crammed into the agape (self-less love) hole that produces Kingdom fruit. This is why The Church has been lessened and disgraced into being no more than a worldly-modeled self-help organization, with the name of Jesus attached to it. It has somehow completely missed the simple Gospel that teaches us to lay down our very lives, at any cost, in order to be Father-pleasers.

At times I’ve been able to explain this topic clearly but never as well as Eric Mumford has in his book “Eating Jesus: Our Spiritual Appetite Awakened”. Interestingly, he refers to this as “Crossless Christianity”. It’s such a hypocritical thing that the people who cling to the cross the tightest would actually miss the pinnacle of its entire purpose: the exchanged life. There’s simply no power in a cross that doesn’t lead one to death and, as a result, new life (regeneration). Salvation was never meant to make us better people. It wasn’t designed to empower us to be leaders or world changers.

The purpose of the cross was to kill us - eradicating our flesh and our desires to please self.

This is why we must deny ourselves - our desires to be heard, known, seen and recognized. If people aren’t seeing Jesus when they see us, then we’re failing at the purpose we’ve been called to - to point to our Father in all that we accomplish in this life (exactly as Jesus did). So many are so busy promoting “Christian excellence” in this modern day “relevant” church. What if we simply started saying, 'You know what? Aside from Christ I’m a murdering, lying, cheating, selfish wretch. But in Him I’m a regenerated Son striving to daily die to myself and figure this mysterious Christ-life out.' The “come be like us because we’ve got all of the answers” façade needs to be laid upon the altar of our prideful arrogance and set aflame. Becoming a Christian is not a magic wand intended to solve all of life’s problems. It should be a lifestyle where moment-by-moment we’re choosing to lay aside our carnal desires in exchange for our Father’s agenda.

Mumford states, The type or “brand” of Christianity practiced by those who have not yet been emptied and displaced by the Son may be identified as “Crossless Christianity.” Like the slave-minded Israelites coming out of Egypt, these eros captives who have now believed in Jesus remain die-hard self-gratifiers, experts from a life-long pursuit of self-satisfaction. Upon discovering that the world cannot satisfy, and that Jesus and His kingdom are real, they begin to pursue Him in the same manner that they pursued futile worldly things, hungering for Him with the same soulish, eros cravings. This old appetite to gratify self easily adapts itself to the religious, spiritual, “Christian” dimension, seeking what God can give me or make of me.

The “Christian self” substitutes the world with God as the object of its’ soulish desire. Old “hunger-habits” are simply transferred onto the things of God. The Christian predator makes God his prey; the parasite detaches from the world and attaches to God. This craving, however, is not for God Himself but rather for His benefits and effects; it is not the spiritual appetite to eat and be displaced by the well-pleasing Son in order to become a generous, well-pleasing son. This “crossless” brand of faith is not Jesus’ Father-conscious faith, which leads to fruit-bearing Life. In the light of the Holy Spirit, we must ask ourselves as believers, “What, exactly, am I hungry for? What is the source of my appetite?” Man’s soulish appetite, whether lawless or religious, is to gratify self; man’s spiritual appetite is to delight Father.

It’s time the Body of Christ becomes absolutely infatuated with pleasing the Father. No more concern for personal gain, denominational “church” success, worldly renown and recognition. We can no longer simply move our selfish agendas from the world to God. It’s entirely rooted in the flesh and will not stand. May we be a people that fall in love with our Father and become as the Son – willing to lay down our entire lives to bring forth what we see and hear Father do. All else is works cloaked as false righteousness, no different than the spiritual garments that clothed those who had Jesus put to death. Let us be a people who embrace the cross that beckons us to come and die so that the Son may live in these bodies of flesh and bone. It's time for a proper exchange.

Spiritual Ingestion

I don’t like the taste of water. Have I ever mentioned that before? It has no flavor and, depending on what city you’re in, it can even taste vile (just try any tap on the Florida coast for example). I work outside, so I need to stay hydrated, especially in the summer of course. This combination always posed a problem until I started drinking a popular “fitness water”, Propel. It’s pretty heavily flavored and always did the trick. Not too long ago they started making this drink in the little powder packs that you can add right into your bottled water. Brilliant! The thing is though, for over a year I fought with getting the packets open enough to pour them out and then, when you finally get it torn open, the contents dissolve poorly. Extreme shaking and great patience is a must!

In a chat with a grocery cashier last week, with my usual boxes of Propel packs in my basket, she asked “Have you ever tried Mio?” What’s this Mio, I wondered? She went on to tell me how she used to be a Propel girl and then started using these Mio drops instead. It’s a liquid where you put as much, or as little, of it in your individual water bottle as you desire - instantly dissolving! Could this be? So, as you might imagine, I purchased a bottle of this mystery liquid and began to experiment a bit with it for several days. I quickly discovered that the recommended “2 squirts” of the stuff just didn’t even come close to providing the flavor that I desire so I was immediately disappointed. I kept increasing how much I added before deciding that “6 squirts” is more my style.

After four or five days of using the stuff, I had a thought regarding it as I was driving to work one morning. My thought pattern went something like this. Do I have any idea what’s in this mystery liquid that I’m adding to my water and ingesting throughout the day? I never read the label, looked into the ingredients or anything yet I was adding it, quite liberally, to my water for days. Somewhere in this thought pattern, God began to speak and injected some wisdom to me for this upcoming year. I’d like to share a small part of it for you to ponder on as we move into a new year.

In keeping with the theme of the last two paragraphs, the primary thing that the LORD is speaking is to be aware of what I’m ingesting. Although few people walk in this reality, we live in a supernaturally-active world. Darkness moves to and fro, spewing deception in every direction. I guess the enemy has achieved his goal quite effectively because it would seem that people ignorantly assume that darkness has to take some obvious form that anyone could readily notice. Much of this deception however is masquerading as light and so many within the Body of Christ are blindly gorging themselves upon it. The “if it looks good it must be good” mindset runs rampant and spiritual discernment has got to be nearing an all-time low. Those called according to the purpose of Christ, reborn into a new creation and called to mature into His likeness are without excuse. We must be spiritually alert in this upcoming year. I feel this is going to be of utmost importance in 2012. 1 Timothy is teeming with wisdom on this matter.

But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons, by means of the hypocrisy of liars… But have nothing to do with worldly fables fit only for old women. On the other hand, discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness; for<sup value="(<a href="#cen-NASB-29756T" title="See cross-reference T">T</a>)" style="text-align: -webkit-auto; "> bodily discipline is only of little profit, but godliness is profitable for all things, since it<sup value="(<a href="#cen-NASB-29756V" title="See cross-reference V">V</a>)" style="text-align: -webkit-auto; "> holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come… Pay close attention to yourself and to your teaching; persevere in these things, for as you do this you will ensure salvation both for yourself and for those who hear you.

As I stand back and examine the Body of Christ, I wonder, are we paying close attention to anything eternal? These days I choose to lay aside my extreme displeasure and disappointment with The Church and focus on the only member of the Body that I have any real likelihood of changing, myself. The Scriptures are full of prophecies of where The Church is headed before the church age as we know it ends. Few will desire to seek out and walk upon the narrow way, I understand that now. But along the way, as we all journey ahead, can we still not spur one another on to sit back and inspect our spiritual lives? I desire to daily examine all that I know, all that I seek after and sift it until only what is godly and spiritually beneficial remains.

So do you know what you’re ingesting, spiritually speaking? What is your spiritual food? What is your source? Are you simply eating off of another’s table? Are you picking over a plate, choosing only what you desire and discarding all else? Are you walking in the awareness of what you consume on a moment-by-moment basis? Do you seek the wisdom that only the Spirit can give in regards to what you ingest as well as its source? If you’re born from above - regenerated - eating of the tables of this world should just no longer satisfy (in fact, even being seated at them should turn our spiritual stomachs).

One of my favorite books is “Eating Jesus” by Eric Mumford. He creatively explains the simple fact that every person is consuming something. He elaborately discusses possessing a spiritual hunger for righteousness and a longing to feast upon the spiritual characteristics of Christ (as John chapter 6 explains “ingesting” the flesh and blood of the Son, spiritually speaking.) Just as in the natural, what we eat shapes who we become. If I eat of this world and the ways of men, I will be worldly. It really is that simple. Even if it’s clothed in religious doctrines, traditions and denominations it’s a worldly pattern that is incapable of producing Kingdom fruit. Even a simple study of the religious elite that had Jesus put to death makes this crystal clear. On the outside they were seemingly a perfect example of godliness but on the inside, they were evil, feasting on their own ways in order to satisfy their selfish cravings.

We must be careful that we’re not found doing likewise. Christianity has become so effortless that anyone can go through the motions and pull it off completely unnoticed. How many times have we seen someone “fall” publicly within church membership and everyone is in such shock over it? It’s because we’re not being wise with what we consume and ingest. Nor are we walking spiritually enlightened to spiritual matters that are lurking beneath the veiled surface. It’s our obligation to one another as Believers to challenge one another instead of ignorantly assuming that everyone is somehow spiritually thriving. This is simply not the case. Once we begin to actively and routinely evaluate our own spiritual intake, we can appropriately assist others in doing likewise, as Paul often did.

So in this upcoming year, I want to assess and examine everything that I ingest. I don’t want to go for even just a few days without examining my intake, as I did with the “water enhancing drops”. I desire to walk in a constant awareness of the spiritual activity around me. The source of all things that come into my life is of utmost importance. May we who are called according to the name of Christ live up to our moniker and walk as Christ walked – hearing, seeing, listening to the voice of the Father.

Awake, sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you. Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, making the most of your time, because the days are evil. Ephesians 5:14-16

Leave The Walls Behind

This song needs sung in every church service in America. It speaks for itself.

Leeland: While We Sing What Is It Really? (Conclusion)

(Read Part 1 , Part 2, and Part 3)

Please take just a moment, stop reading and reflect on your conversion. What transpired? Perhaps more importantly, what is ongoing today? Was it just a “decision” that you made when you were young that was inherently expected of you? Did you raise a hand and walk an aisle and then embark into life as a Christian, simply doing the things that Christians do in this nation? Do you have to strain to think of any spiritual occasions in your life that aren’t directly linked to organized, religious activities? Is it remotely possible that you’ve spent your entire life going through passed-down, religious motions that hold no regeneration power? Where are you now, spiritually, compared to when you were born again? What evidence is there today that you’re in fact a new creation being conformed into the image of Christ? As Paul told us in 2 Corinthians, “Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves.”

So what is a Christian heritage really? In light of the Scriptures, it must be rooted and established in demonstrating Christ to the generations that are watching us. It must be exclusively pointing others to a personal revelation of The Christ, not programs, practices and traditions alone. Anything less than this is just another pattern of this world, cloaked in Christian garments.

I offer this challenge. Where does your Christian identity lie? Remove the years that you spent teaching Sunday School classes or volunteering in the nursery. Take away all of your Christian heritage that in the end will not be able to be a leg for you to stand on. Forget all of the tracts that you handed out during revival week. All of your faithful Sunday service attendances? Throw them out too. What remains? When all the “Christian-y stuff” is vacated, what proof resides within your inner man that you’re a new creation, regenerated from the inside out? These findings alone define whether or not you’re in Christ. Not what denomination you were born into or what church building your obituary will associate you with. All of those things, although enjoyable and important to so many, are simply not the goal.

Christianity, true biblical Christianity, the “Christ-is-my-life” life – this alone is the goal. Be assured of this today my friend – search your inner man and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal where your identity lies. It must be found in Christ alone. All else falls short. Has the Spirit of the living God truly transformed you into a new creation? What legacy will you leave behind?

Christian Heritage... It would do the current older generation to remember that the way they know the church to be (and generally think it should forever remain) is not how it’s always been. In fact, there were those before them that would now see today’s church structure as horribly awry. “Just As I Am” religion, although seemingly ancient, is relatively new in the grand timeline that is Christianity.

Getting back to my main point, before I venture too far off, the Body of Christ need not strain and strive so hard to preserve and pass on traditions and denominational doctrines. They will all eventually die off and disappear into religious oblivion. Many fail to realize that this church age as we know will in fact come to an end. To me, that makes such drastic efforts to maintain religious practices at all costs such a tragic error. We must spend our time spurring one another on to good works. We should spend our time, efforts and our money on things that foster spiritual relationships more so than promoting buildings, programs and traditions. I fully realize that people, a lot of people, will go to their graves clenching denominational, old-time religion. Some of my family members that I love dearly will even do so. It’s just the way it is. But what this generation needs is to see those who claim to know this mysterious God of the ages live out a personal lifestyle of knowing Him. They, nor I, care about how you can quote all of the books of the Bible in order or give us your Sunday School attendance count from last week. What clothes you wear or how polite you are on Sunday mornings just simply has no relation whatsoever to one’s walk with Christ. What has the Spirit spoken to you this week? What miracle have you been blessed to be a part of in your lifetime? How are you putting others above yourself? Why do you believe what you do and what are you doing daily to improve the areas in your life that are lacking faith? Has Christ become your entire identity and radically changed your absolute everything? Most importantly, are you continually falling in love with the Saviour of your soul?

Let’s take a moment to examine briefly the parable of the two sons in Matthew 21. Jesus, addressing the religious elite of His day as they questioned Him (as usual) stated, “even the tax-gatherers and harlots will get into the kingdom of God before you.” In the parable, one son commits to go work in his father’s vineyard yet didn’t go. The other, when asked to also go work, says no but is filled with regret and goes out to work the fields as the father requested. The latter, Jesus states, is the one who did the will of his father. Likewise, spiritually speaking, vast multitudes have, with their mouths, stated that they’ll be about their Father’s business, yet have never left the comfort of their spiritual lazy-boy. Simply stated, this displeases the Lord and these are found in disbelief, with no remorse (vs. 32). Let us not be ones who, as the son, make empty commitments with no follow-through in keeping them. May we not allow religious practices to be all that we’re found doing when the Master comes. Religion, masquerading as holiness and regeneration may fool many a man, but the Lord doesn’t see as you and I - He sees the heart of a man. He sees your heart. Again, time and time again we see Jesus addressing those who were considered the holiest men on the earth at that time as if they knew nothing of the kingdom of God. We must take notice of this recurring theme throughout Scripture. What men see and brand as Christianity in our day may in fact be nothing more than a façade built with bricks of pride and elitism, housed in identities that are rooted in carnality.

Christian Heritage... Church pews all across this land are emptying in their greatest numbers to date. A mass exodus from the traditional church is in full swing. Why is this? I personally believe that generation after generation have grown weary of carrying on empty traditions and impersonal religious activities. Let’s be honest, they just don’t have much spiritual implications really. Surface-level relationships and messages that we’ve all heard fifty times over just don’t cut it. Not to mention that unless they’re “clergy”, they’re just deemed “laymen” whose responsibility is to show up at services and serve. It’s no wonder why this repetitious program is finally coming to a close for many. I don’t fault the religious masses so much anymore. Like any other popular culture, they just follow the crowd.

But a realization must be made that Christ didn’t come to make good, moral, American citizens.

That thinking is so ridiculously narrow and selfish. He came that we, the entire human race could be redeemed and be holy as God Himself is holy. There are scores of good, moral people that have absolutely nothing to do with Christianity. Therefore we must see that this goal alone is entirely insufficient. Salvation isn’t some Christian-American possession either, as Christianity is often deemed. You would think that American Christians somehow derived a patent on the Gospel and have license to peddle it to the world as their own. Erect buildings like us, install pastoral pyramids like us, collect offerings like us. Is this really what Christianity is all about? It is not a “thing” to be owned or controlled by this nation or any other, ever.

About ten years ago, my wife and I moved out of metro Atlanta into the North Georgia foothills country. I joined a small staff at a small country church and jumped headlong into an environment that my Spencer lineage would have felt right at home in. The family matriarch of the church was still in attendance and lived next door. Kristin and I lived in the parsonage on the other side of the church building. There was (and still is) a deep, deep heritage within the confines of this little country church assembly. The people there were some of the sweetest, kindest people I’ve ever met to this day. Most all of them welcomed us in and made us feel like part of their extended family immediately. Interestingly though, I have to strain to remember any memorable spiritual occasions there. Yes we had fantastic “fellowship”, meals teeming with some of the best country cooking anyone will ever taste and predictable gatherings over and over again. The social end of it was fantastic, if you’re into simple, country living. Sadly, the few that I have contact with today explain that the current generation just want little to do with the church. They’ve grown up, started families of their own but it’s just irrelevant to their lives today. (Having rock-style worship music and dressing hip isn’t the answer either but that’s for another day.)

I feel it’s imperative that those who desire to sit clench-fisted in pews across this nation grasp that a lot of Christian traditions, although enjoyable and highly valued for many, will not sustain The Church (please notice the capital letters here). The Body of Christ was never meant to be programmed, boxed and repeated like clockwork throughout generations. If the younger generation is disinterested in religious activities, perhaps it’s not God that they abhor but the traditions themselves that claim to be how we tell them of Him. I’ve said time and time again that if people truly knew Who God is, aside from the demands of religion, they’d actually be interested. God’s awesome salvation design is fueled by spontaneity and is remarkably experiential. Many a religious one would quote, with great persuasion, Proverbs 22:6 which of course states, “Train up a child in the way he should go, even when he is old he will not depart from it.” A deeper study of this popular Scripture that’s used to defend dragging children and youth to church services reveals that there’s more to it than what we’ve been told. “Train up” references dedicating them to the Lord on a journey. This journey, this “way that they should go”, I believe, is one that leads them to set out to discover who Jesus, The Christ is for themselves, led by our example because we too are on the same journey. It’s a lifetime journey that leads them to a personal revelation of The Christ. Too many throughout the generations only know the God of their fathers, through what their fathers knew as truth. What they need is to lay their own spiritual eyes upon His beautiful face and see His awesome love for them individually. We’ve errantly been taught to just blindly submit to those “over” us within the Christian order of position. Questioning why someone believes what they do or verbalizing that you disagree with them (gasp) is just rebellious, right? Those who follow us absolutely must be allowed to question what we believe and why. There’s no reason whatsoever why this should offend us, unless our spiritual egos are so inflated that we somehow think we’re above such actions.

The passing down of a strong Christian heritage is of no eternal use except when it leads to personal, spiritual rebirth throughout the generations. It, on its own, primarily fixated on external rituals and activities, has absolutely no salvation power – zero!

Christian Heritage... What Is It Really? (Part 1)

I come from a long line of traditional Christianity. My great-grandfather was a Baptist preacher, my grandfather a leader in the church seemingly his entire life, clinging tightly to conservative Baptist ways. My great-uncle (his brother), also a pastor. From as long as I can remember I was taken (at times dragged) to church services. It’s in my family tree – Christianity. Where I am today though, as a Believer in Christ, is surprisingly not a result of what I was raised to know Christianity to be. In fact, they’re so vastly different it’s baffling. Everyone just went to church – it’s what you did. When I left home and chose to forgo any church-related activities I fully understood that I was a sinful, rebellious one. No one had to tell me. I was simply raised to know this inherently in the countless hell-fire and brimstone sermons I had heard throughout my early years. Indoctrinated to go to church and mysteriously please God or go it alone and bring Him great displeasure. How sad a life really, these two options. Riddled with guilt and condemnation at every turn and set up for failure. I was destined to disappoint God and I knew that I would never be good enough to stay on His good side.

It kept me from truly knowing Who God is for many years as I carried this twisted view of Him into my adult life. Thankfully, after a couple of stints on church staff positions I unplugged from all that I knew God to be (religion) and ventured out to discover Him for myself. What I found, free from all skewed and prideful, Christian-American Christianity, changed my life forever. The God of all the ages revealed Himself to me and I’d never be the same. I had discovered God for myself, without coercion or mandated service. It was no longer forced or obligatory just because it was somehow what I was “supposed” to do. It was as if I had been set free to know Who He really is… for myself - a personal revelation of Jesus Christ that cannot be mandated upon anyone… ever. Salvation is a personal choice – period.

Although a Christian heritage for many Americans is like oxygen in level of importance, it’s important to understand that salvation/spiritual regeneration (the only true defining event of biblical Christianity) cannot be inherited or passed on. Religion and the traditions of men however always are. Knowing how deeply the traditions of American Christianity run in my family, how is it then that I sit here now completely disinterested in continuing these legacies of religion? Many would consider this quite disrespectful, I know. It in no way lessens my respect for those who have come before me. (In fact, my grandfather is one of the greatest men I’ll ever know). But today I have a son of my own and all that I desire him to pursue is a personal relationship with the LORD – a relationship that he possesses as his own, not something simply passed on by anyone else, including me. I will gladly teach him all that I know, but more importantly, I’ll teach him what I have personally experienced. I’ll guide Him to the Father the best way that I know how – by living a Christ-life. What I’ll pass on won’t just be felt-board Bible stories that are told like fairy tales or how he has to do this or that in order to make sure God isn’t mad at him his entire life. But rather I’ll tell him of the things I’ve tasted and seen of my Father. I’ll speak of God’s patience, kindness and unfailing love above all else.

Although one would assume that everyone knows this simple fact, it’s worth discussing that a solid Christian heritage, although valued and good, does not ensure one’s lineage will arrive at biblical salvation. Most would say that of course it’s sure better than “insert whatever other way of life here”, right? Honestly, I just don’t know. I view it this way: Anything, I repeat, anything that is a form of godliness, is not godliness and will not lead to spiritual regeneration. It’s a counterfeit. So, let me pose it this way, is a plastic apple that looks authentic and genuine any better than a paper one that is a poor representation just because it looks more like the real thing? Of course not. This same principle applies with salvation. I don’t care how spiritual or religious one looks, if it’s not rooted in authentic transformation, it’s of no use – period.

A lot of times traditional Christianity is even allowed to be a tool that runs family members off, should they be disinterested in just falling into line with all of the religious rules and regulations. (These occurrences are almost entirely found to be associated with church service attendance.) Many a youth has been turned away with scarring words of how disappointed God is with their rebellion in regards to attending religious activities. The truth is, I think we’d all be highly more likely to stay within the mindset of true Christianity as we mature if it were more than just weekly activities and sleep-inducing repetitions. (I fully understand that many a man enjoys such a lifestyle.) If the largest quantity of one’s Christianity is made up of attending services each Sunday, then it’s no wonder that the knowledge of God seems so disinteresting.

I just see so many people discuss their Christianity (and, of course their denominational affiliation) as they would their political preference – as if they were born into it like their family forefather before them. Let me make this clear, although nearly everyone would say that they of course know this simple fact…

Salvation, unlike Christianity, cannot be inherited or passed on throughout generations. It absolutely must be a personally experiential event. It’s not simply a tradition, program or national custom. It’s a supernatural transformation of a man – any man despite race, nationality or upbringing.

Daily Rhema Word

Last night, I sat down beside my beautiful wife and read it to him. What an indescribably incredible time that I'll never forget.

Dear Son,

Hello son, this is your dad. I know you’ve heard me talk to you and rub you on your mom’s belly on occasion. I don’t really know you yet, but my heart overflows with love for what we’ll share in the days, months and years to come. In all honestly, your mother and I never intended to bring you into this world. You see, we never knew all of the miraculous things that your arrival would entail. I was too wrapped up in my life, my plans and my ways. Your mom and I will have spent over thirteen years together by the time you meet us. They’ve been wonderful years - years establishing who we are together and individually. We’ve shared joyful times and a lot of hurts too. One day, you too will know these things. For now though, let’s just all enjoy the innocence of your arrival.

Many miraculous circumstances took place leading up to our finding out about you. I had an unexplainable medical event in my life that could have impaired me for the rest of my life, disabling me from being able to hold you or even talk to you clearly. But the great thing is, buried within this battle were innumerable life lessons and a victory was won! You see, my Father held me in His hand just like I’ll hold you in mine. He cradled me in safety and assured your mom and me that I would be OK. I hope to be such a great father to you son. Thankfully, my Father is also yours. He’s the One who’s been fashioning you with His own hands, in His own awesome image. You surely know Him well by now. I know this because your mother and I have constantly prayed that He would be hovering over you and intimately interacting with you while you’re in your mom’s belly. She’s provided you with the perfect dwelling for you to grow in. So too does our Father have such a place for you. I’ll tell you more about it all soon. In fact, we have our entire lives to talk about it. I can think of no thing greater to share with you!

When your mom told me about you, I must admit, I was pretty scared. All that I knew would be changing. All I had ever seen down the road for your mom and me was somehow instantaneously erased. I’m sorry that it was hard for me for a bit. I was just selfish, plain and simple. I’ll never forget the night I knelt before you and your mom, weeping. I laid down my will and plans that night, son. I chose to embrace you and welcome you into our lives. I hurt deeply that night, like a part of me was removed. In fact, I think that it was. But it was a necessary removal, a spiritual surgery of sorts. Father was my strength that night too as I had none. Perhaps that was the beauty of it all, you think?

I’ll continue to walk this path as you move from the womb to the world. I promise your mother and I will love you more than we love life itself. We’ll lay down our lives for you. We’ll sacrifice for you. We’ll teach you how to embrace the eternal things. You’ll meet so many people enamored with the things of this world that are passing all away. You’ll see that they’re all around, really. They’re not bad people or anything, they just haven’t been enabled to see beyond the temporal things of life. Occasionally perhaps, you’ll even have to tell me that I too have joined in such activities. This life isn’t easy, son. You’ll have many hurts, often by those who love you the most. People likely won’t understand you or why you’re disinterested in following the crowds. That’s OK. In fact, that is wonderful!!! Nothing excites me more than sharing this journey called life with you. There’s so much more to life than the things of this world. Your mother and I, for years now, have said that we longed to share with others this narrow-path life that we’ve found. I can think of no one greater to share it with than you!

In the times when all others seem to turn aside, we will be here, no matter what. The agape love of our Father knows no boundaries or limitations. It’s this love that I pray I can show you all the days of your life. I’m still learning too, so please be patient with me, OK? I know that I’ll make many mistakes along the way. After all, you must remember that I’ve never been a parent before and new things take some time to learn!

You’ll be here in a few weeks now. In fact, it’s completely feasible that you could arrive anytime. Words can’t properly express how I long to see your mom gaze onto your beautiful face. I fully believe that it will change my life forever - that moment. I envision it often, you know. When I prayed over her, right around the time you were conceived, I asked the Father to birth joy in her. I asked Him to allow joy to leap in her womb. Guess what? You are that joy! You are her new life! You will forever change her entire innermost being when she looks into your eyes. You! You see, you’re no mistake. Do you remember the night that she told you that we wanted you while you were ever so tiny in her belly? She cried tears of joy as she rejoiced over the miracle that was you! She embraced you readily with open arms, despite the surprise and shock of it all. Your mother is so awesome, son! She loves so deeply and true. She has eyes for no other and has loved me through some pretty rough times. Many times when I made bad decisions or was just flat out selfish. Just try not to hoard too much of her great love, OK? Your dad will still need some too!

So, when she sees you son, this joy unspeakable will arrive! Sure she’s seen glimmers of it already, but oh when you lay upon her chest for the first time! If you’re not too busy crying and breathing your first breaths of this earth’s air, you might want to look over my way. I’ll be the one crying uncontrollably as I bask in this amazing moment unfolding before my very eyes. You see son, I don’t think I’m like most dads. I’m not better or anything like that, it’s just that Father has given me eyes to see things – feel things a bit differently than most. When I see you, I won’t just see an offspring of mortal man. I’ll see a miracle of all Creation! A new life, birthed into the opportunity to willingly choose the reason you were created! Just don’t get too used to all of this attention because you’ll spend your entire adult life unlearning that everything is actually not all about you after all! So enjoy it while you can! [smile]

Your mother and I anticipate your arrival dear one. We’re hoping to decide on a name soon. Your mom wants to wait until she sees you before she decides completely. I’m a bit more of a planner than she, you’ll know this soon. We’ll see. We’ve got all of your things ready. Our entire house has been prepared just for you. We have a stroller with real inner-tube, rubber tires! A cool, little swing that vibrates in case you’re having trouble sleeping. Oh, and your room! Your mom and I put the coolest little animal decals all over the walls. We think you’ll love them, (but to be honest, most of that kind of stuff is for us really). There’s a moon light and a ton of stuffed animals that friends and family have given just for you! Your mom got you the coolest little sock bunny too, from a neat toy store in North Carolina! We’ll have to take you there when you get older. We’ve got your bassinet and crib all ready too! In fact, a baby slept in your crib just the other night when she was visiting. Her name’s Mercy, we think you’ll just love her! She has a big sister too, she’s pretty awesome. She calls you “Boy, Boy” and has been asking for you to ”come out” for months now. The bassinet was slept in by a future friend of yours too. His name’s Hugh. He’s a pretty cool little guy with awesome parents and you’ll even get to wear some of his clothes!

Well, I could go on all day and into the night but I guess I’ll just save the rest to tell you in person. So, until I see you face to face, keep growing son. Enjoy the last few weeks of being perfectly held by Father’s mighty hands, untouched by this world. He’s not quite done forming you yet, but He’s so close! Doctors want to force you out and tell your mom she has all these things that could potentially go wrong. But between you and me, I believe she (and you) will do just fine! You come out when the Father tells you it’s time, so be listening, OK? He knows best! After all, He’s known your birthday since before time and space began!

We love you son. We’ll see you soon. Oh, and one more thing, be thinking about putting together a good sleep schedule now, while you’ve got the time. Your mom and I kinda like sleeping at night. ;)

A Tale of Life And War (And The Worth Of A Man)

Back in July of 1992, a beautiful young woman gave birth to a healthy baby boy. Eight pounds, thirteen ounces and twenty-two inches long surely foretold that he would grow to be a big one. His parents named him Bobby, after an old family acquaintance. Bobby was an only child. His mother, thought originally to be barren, was blessed to carry and deliver him full-term. Bobby grew quickly in stature as well as in personality and maturity in his early years. He loved his mother and father generously and would find great joy in playing pranks on them both quite often. His mother stayed home with him, tending to household chores and giving her devoted attention to Bobby’s every need (and even most of his requests). His father was a proud soldier, having served in the military since his eighteenth birthday. He served as his father and grandfather had before him. He grew up hearing many tall tales of combat and attacks from the enemy that had attempted to infiltrate their land. He had always quietly hoped to pass this honor on to Bobby as well, one day, should he so choose.

Bobby attended school and loved to read. He was quite the little artist too as he’d often be found scribbling animals and stick people on any scraps of paper that he could find. He’d play with the few worn army men figurines that he had handed down to him. He’d build forts and go away to far-away lands, all in his imagination of course. As he grew older, Bobby maintained his close relationship with his parents. He always chose to stay close and be mindful of his parent’s wishes, even when his friends grew into their wild streaks. He was always obedient and determined to finish his last years of school. As his eighteenth birthday approached and graduation was nearing, he went out for the day with his father, as they often did. As they sat together that day, his father reflected back on how Bobby was not even expected to be conceived all the way through the present day, now a young man. His dad spoke of how his mother radiated the day that it was confirmed that she was pregnant with him. Bobby smiled.

As they continued to talk about the experiences and trials of life that they had known together, Bobby began to interject, “Dad, I want to tell you something. I’ve decided that I want to be like you and granddad. I want to be in the military and stand up for our family and country.” As Bobby looked up at his father’s face, he could see tears beginning to slowly stream down his cheek. “Son,” he said as he stood to his feet. “I consider it an honor for you, my flesh and blood to make such a brave and honorable decision.” As they embraced, it was if time stood still. Bobby had surely grown into a man this day. It was a memorable day for them, a glorious day.

Within the next several months, Bobby would train relentlessly. He attended camps and preparatory rigors that would prepare him for whatever may lie ahead. By year’s end, as if it was on a scheduled timetable, the nation faced an attack on their borders and Bobby’s battalion was called into action. Bobby willingly volunteered to be on the front lines, when asked, and was set to face the initial assault from the enemy. He embraced this privilege to stand up and defend his country and all that he had ever known as a way of life. He had become a proud soldier, just as so many who had laid down their lives before him. His parents, although hesitant of his stepping into harm’s way so boldly, counted it an honor to have their own son take such an admirable stand on behalf of their country.

As the battle began, Bobby ran into action without any fear or hesitation. He faced the bullets and missiles of the infiltrators head-on. As the battle became instantly intense, he dodged and moved swiftly into a large line of brush, lying flat on the ground and completely still. After spending several moments assessing that it was safe to move further ahead, he quickly rose to his feet and turned to his left. As he turned, the barrel of an enemy rifle was forcefully pushed into his young face. His body was instantly frozen, at a complete loss of what to do in this moment. Only mere seconds passed but it seemed like hours as his training kicked in and he began to raise his gun to fire several rounds at the enemy beside him. Before he could pull the trigger, three bullets penetrated Bobby’s skull and exited the other side of his head. He fell to the ground bleeding, maimed, lifeless. In those immeasurable milliseconds in between life and death, Bobby’s brain fired memories from his short time on this earth. He saw his father teaching him how to hold a gun. He saw moments playing kickball with his classmates in school. His last memory that raced by was of his mother, holding him tightly and kissing his head when he was five. Bobby’s body lay motionless on the hard ground, spent of breath and existence.

By the time the enemy’s army moved further down the territory lines later that afternoon, Bobby’s mother and father had received word that Bobby had been killed in the very first wave of combat. As they scoured the war-torn land, turning over countless bodies of young men from both armies, they looked for Bobby with tear-filled eyes. After several hours, Bobby’s father heard a recognizable scream as his wife called out to him from about thirty yards away, beside the brush line. He knew that she had found Bobby. As Bobby’s father walked over, friends were called over to take Bobby’s bloody and flaccid body back into town. As they entered the village together, they lamented, they mourned. Bobby had died an honorable death in the eyes of his friends and family. His name would always be recognized throughout the town in the days ahead. Bobby, the fearless one who stood for his family and country… until death. But, in this moment, that just didn’t seem to matter. This young man, barely beginning to live a life on his own, had, in one small moment in time, been removed from this earth - dead at eighteen as he honorably laid down his life for his country.

You likely have a vivid picture in your mind of what just played out in the previous paragraphs. I would also presume that I could pretty accurately portray what it looks like. If this short, fictional tale moved you, I have some questions to pose. Would it change things for you if Bobby was an Iraqi boy whose real name was Hassan? Would you cast it all aside as ridiculous if his family and friends that you likely felt compassion for are considered by the majority to be your repulsive, animalistic and vile enemy? Would you be less moved, or perhaps even appalled at the idea that the “enemy” within this story was an American soldier, simply carrying out his orders to infiltrate and attack a Middle-Eastern village on a mission to establish peace and freedom? I know full well that this is offensive… it should be.

My point of this piece is simple, we must see ALL as ones created in the beautiful image of God, with ABSOLUTELY NO EXCEPTIONS. If we continue to promote the “eye for an eye” mentality, this Nation is absolutely no different than those who They seek so tirelessly to eradicate. May the LORD open blinded eyes to see that this great Nation is part of a global existence. We are not somehow God’s elect given the privilege to execute all that we deem as right, without consideration for the lives of each and every individual created for the exact same existence as we. All of this is about perspective. We stand for what we deem as right and just in our own eyes and so do other nations. All move and act out of their own desires and convictions, resulting in constant conflict. Until we see all men as our brothers in Creation, longing first and foremost for them to know the awesome God of this Universe, we’re doomed to remain housed in our arrogant, vengeance-fueled kingdoms of this world. May we not continue to grow increasingly cold and callous to senseless killing and wars. Jesus, come quickly.

Treasures Worth Finding, Part 2

June 1 - An update on David. I've been able to spend some good time with him over the last week and took him to an interview on Monday. Please pray that he'll be shown favor and that things will line up for him to be able to work and possibly move to a different homeless shelter.

Read Part 1.

A homeless man that I met in Columbia, SC several years ago summed up this skewed view of the Body of Christ quite well and without effort. He was among a group of several others and my friends (far more seasoned and comfortable with interacting with those unlike themselves than I at the time) were talking with them. We all stood across the street from, and facing, an elaborate church building. It had a huge parking lot with a “family life center” (whatever that really means), stained-glass windows, a spire reaching up to the heavens… you know, the epitome of what comes to mind when one thinks of church. As we asked him what came to mind when he thought of Christianity, he pointed over to the building. “That,” he said with immediate disgust. (I remember it clear as day.) “All that… stuff. That ain’t for me. I’m not welcome in there no matter if they say I am or not. I ain’t stupid. I don’t have nothin’ to offer, so why would they want me? All that stuff…. all that stuff is for you, sitting there empty all week long… for you.” (All he knew is that we were Christians who wanted to pray and talk with them, so he automatically assumed we too were from a “church”.) That hour or so walking the streets in Columbia and hearing people speak of what they know the church to be came right back to mind today as I spoke with David.

So what do we do? How do we change this saddening stereotype? How in the world do we even begin to leave behind the current reputation that the church has for so many of those who are in need? Well, as much as I hate to even mention it, money is often at the heart of the issue. To start with, most all of our lives are teeming with unnecessary luxuries. When I’m going throughout normal life, I’d far too often choose to buy myself something useless than help someone in need. A lot of Christianity excuses this away as being “blessed” but we might as well call it what it is, selfish indulgence. The next time we want to buy the latest iPad, sportscar or high-end gadget, perhaps we should set that money aside and ask the Lord to allow us to cross paths with someone in need that we can share it with. When paralleled with those who only have a plastic bag and one change of clothes in their possession, all that we have far exceeds our needs.

Another issue that needs addressed, that few want to even discuss, is that the organized church is a money-generating machine. It would do the Body of Christ well to study the Scriptures and know what we’re instructed to do regarding giving. The mandatory 10% myth (to your local church of course) emaciates your giving heart by having a predetermined limit of what is “God’s” and what is “yours.” Weekly, ritualistic giving generally removes all creativity and spontaneity that awaits the one who is always looking to give freely. I’m in no way suggesting we just throw money at people blindly. In fact, I’d encourage us all to venture out and develop relationships and give in all areas, not just money (time, possessions, etc.).

Perhaps if the Body decided to forgo outlandish pastoral salaries, million-dollar building funds and all of the other fluff that’s entirely irrelevant to the gathering of the Body, She could feed, clothe and house those in need. The fact is, millions of acres of church-owned land cover this nation, claiming to be peppered with the “houses of God”, yet they’re primarily vacant 75% of the week. Through the eyes of one in need of shelter, this is exponentially ridiculous.

Go. Don’t wait for a youth rally, street evangelism team or church-wide outreach to befriend someone on the street (the latter part I’m speaking to myself). So many people seem so riddled with fear to approach anyone that “looks homeless.” I’m in no way encouraging one to be unwise regarding the who, when and how’s of it all, but they’re people of worth and should be loved and embraced accordingly as the Lord leads. Christ gave His life for all mankind. That includes people who are your clone as well as those who disgust you. Chances are, the ones that you feel most compelled to ignore will be the ones who God calls you to use to touch their lives.

Lastly, when you get to know someone in need, truly help them. Money is not always the only (or best) solution. To get back to David, I did give him money, but we’re already looking into searching for a job opportunity for him. Every time the Lord calls me to pry open my wallet, a calculator begins to run in my mind. Knowing this, I’ve learned throughout the years to choose whatever I feel comfortable with and then give more than that. It’s not a self-promoting thing, in fact, it’s the exact opposite. When I say that all that I have is the Lord’s I want to mean it. All that I have I desire to keep in open hands. I still struggle with letting it go, most of the time right up until I do. All that I can do is start with me as I’m as guilty as anyone. This is not a new challenge and therefore will never be completely eradicated. What we can do is spur one another to good works.

It’s imperative that the Body of Christ ventures outside of her bubble. She’s so busy worrying about being infected by the world that She’s quit infecting the world Herself (with Jesus anyway). And one more thing, and I’m pretty sure I can freely speak for the handful of those we deem homeless when I say this (based on aforementioned conversations and others), stop just inviting them to church services and telling them how you can “change them.” Perhaps we’re the ones who need changed.

So, thank you David. You, my new friend, see the eternal Kingdom that Christ Himself desires us to get to building. This is a truth that is far more valuable than any earthly riches that any man could ever possess. I look forward to seeing you again soon.

Proverbs 14:31 He who oppresses the poor reproaches, mocks, and insults his Maker, but he who is kind, gracious and merciful to the needy honors Him.

Treasures Worth Finding, Part 1

I hadn’t talked to anyone who’s living on the streets for quite some time… months likely. Today however, I met David. I wasn’t out looking to “minister to homeless people.” I wasn’t trying to find someone in need. I wasn’t on a street evangelism team in matching t-shirts. Actually, I was in between appointments and considerably busy. I stopped at a convenience store, intending to run in, buy something to drink and run back out on my way to my next stop. (I will mention though that I never stop at this particular store. Maybe I’ve been in there three times in five years or so.) As I scurried out devouring down my Krispy Kreme honey bun, the man that I was about to meet as David called out to me, “Hey, you know where a guy can get some work around here?” to which I responded, in my great care and concern (I say sarcastically), “Nope. Sure don’t”, as my feet didn’t miss a step. Thankfully, he walked with me over to my truck and asked me about my business. I instantly knew I needed to stop and make time for this man. For the next forty-five minutes or so, I chose to unplug from my demands of life and hear this stranger’s story and I was so glad that I did.

David is a kind-hearted, big in stature yet soft-spoken man who fell upon some hard times several years ago. He made his way up here from Atlanta after hearing that there were some openings in a shelter in the area. He had been on the streets (literally) down there for six weeks, sleeping on cardboard and taking any odd jobs that he could find. He told me of some of his bad choices that snow-balled into much bigger issues. He showed me a picture of his fourteen year-old daughter who he proudly told me enjoys participating in amateur boxing. She lives with her mother now, his ex-wife. He apparently battled for years for custody of her, but chose to wisely send her back to her mother when he lost his job and found out that his house was being taken away from him. He cried as he told me of how hard it was to tell her that he wouldn’t allow her to go to the streets with him. He shared of his battle with addiction in his younger years. He told me how he understood that life is hard and that things don’t always work out the way we want them to.

He must have talked ninety percent of the time that he and I were in conversation this afternoon. He just wanted a friend - someone to hear him and actually listen. The heart of the Father kicks in quickly when I’m around transparent people who are free of trying to impress me or paint some façade of religion, status or success. I must admit, listening to homeless people speak of the things that they do has always changed me. There’s just something about their transparency that is freeing. Most everyone has closets full of skeletons, buried deep under a thick epidermis of pretense. Not so with the down-and-out. I’ve found that there’s often more wisdom within their few words than perhaps anyone else that I’ve ever met. Their perspective isn’t like yours and mine. They generally see what matters and call things as they are without grandiose rhetoric or beautiful words… and I like that. In fact, as I’ve said before, it would do us all good to befriend someone who lives on the street. Likely much to your surprise, not for their benefit but for ours! I need to hear of this perspective. I need to see what is lasting in this life. I forget how awesome the Lord moves within relationships with them.

David would go on to say some interesting things about God, organized church and Christianity in general. The first thing that he mentioned, in the midst of a story he was recounting, was how God has met him in his need and despair. He talked about how so many people think you have to get a man inside of a church building to “drag him to Jesus”. When he said “Salvation is a spiritual thing you know. God is spirit. You can’t force a man to find Jesus with natural programs and services”, he piqued my interest! I asked him to elaborate and he obliged quietly and without any angry or judgmental words. As I mentioned earlier, he just said it like it is. (And I’ll quote him because it is etched into my brain).

“Everything has a clause you see. ‘We’ll help you if… We’ll help you but you have to… We’ll show love to you if you…” he said. “For example, where I’m staying now is full of nice people but the only way you’re allowed to stay there is if you attend all of their church services. The other night they had an evening service and the pastor stood up at the pulpit and said that the church doesn’t pray enough, so all they were going to do that night was pray. Everyone went to the front and the pastor led this excitement-laced prayer where he’d keep stopping, look people in the eye and ask, ‘Amen?’ People would of course respond with ‘Amen’ as they knew they were supposed to. He did the same to me and I didn’t agree with what he prayed. I didn’t think it was biblical, so I didn’t say ‘Amen.’ A few minutes later he looked at me again, stopped mid-prayer and told me, in front of everyone, that I could just go sit down until they were done. So I went to the back and sat and waited. After the service he came up to me and said he needed to talk to me. He told me that he knew I had to be there but if I was going to be staying in the services, I was not going to disrespect him in his church. ‘Your church?’ I asked. ‘There, sir is the problem.’ He sternly responded and said, ‘Don’t you know that I’m a man of God?’ I just looked at him and said, ‘Well don’t you know that I am too?’”

When David told me this story, I must have smiled from ear to ear at his response to such an asinine question and exchange. I wanted to applaud him for doing what likely no one else in that church would likely ever do… speak the truth! (I did shake his hand though.) He went on to tell me almost verbatim what others whom I’ve known that are on the streets have experienced of the church and their approach to people who, in the eyes of most, are just lowly nobody’s in need of charity and pity. Now I completely understand that many religious institutions help those in need. Many in metro areas do fantastic things for the homeless and needy. I know this. I’ve spent time in Nashville and met first-hand organizers that are primarily funded by churches. I’ve seen families with small babies eating in their cafeterias, likely going completely without if not for that meal. But the more I’ve found out about the details behind the scenes over the years, far too many strings are attached and generally no real hope of getting someone off of the street is even in the gameplan. Funds are tight at best and my issue is not that churches don’t give and help but it’s the percentage issue that gets me. To be specific, how much of what your average local church brings in annually is used to reach out to those in need? Not outreach programs like mission trips where all of the money is spent to send your “team” somewhere. I’d be in complete and utter shock if it exceeded any church’s pastoral salaries (which is generally reported as high as 45% of all church income), building endeavors (generally at least 2 out of every 10 dollars) or church programs (VBS, literature, etc.). There’s simply little left to give after our consumer-driven Body ravages through the church’s revenue. Friends, we cannot allow The Church, the representation of God on this earth, continue to be seen as buildings and programs! We must become willing and active participants of what’s going on in the world around us! The world will not just wander in “to” us. We must go into it and share this unconditional love that we’ve been shown.

Jump to Part 2

Enmity Of Man

Please take a moment and examine the picture to the left before you proceed.

One nation invades another, claiming to execute the justice of their god upon their enemies. Soldiers, mothers, fathers, sons and daughters are killed. Innocent ones lives are taken in the despicable actions of war. Young men, many who don’t even know what they’re fighting for are executed with delight. Throats are slit, bullets pierce skulls and bodies are dismembered with national pride. Flags are hoisted high. The “winners” are the heroic, victorious ones in the eyes of their nation and detested enemies by others. The “losers” are wronged and wounded, no matter which side it is and their nation mourns. One is bad, one is good. After one attacks the other, the latter, if capable, organizes and wages war upon the formers land, executing revenge, driven by retaliatory rage. They are completely justified in their actions in their own eyes. The “victors” rejoice over death, territorial conquerings or vindicated killings of evil leaders.

Tell me, when seated in a completely unbiased chair that is not swayed by personal convictions or national-minded prejudices, who is right? Who is good? Who is evil? If all actions mirror one another, who really rises up out of the ashes triumphant?

Who wins when the actions are exactly the same?

I’ll tell you, neither. All involved lose because absolutely nothing is resolved or removed…. nothing! The cyclical pattern of kill and be killed continues for all time. All involved continue to willingly surrender to the fleshly demands to conquer and prevail over their self-defined evil enemies, generally excused away in the name of their “god”.

What a sad day we too have arrived upon when millions, many proudly professing to be "Christian patriots", state that the murdering of Bin Laden somehow (and I quote) "makes God happy" and how acts such as this by our military "shows why God blesses this nation".

The wars and senseless killings in the name of “freedom” are nothing more than a globally militarized game of “he pushed me first” that has cost this nation, and all others involved, millions of lives.

Lord forgive this Nation for acting exactly like those that She claims to despise. We are all created in Your beautiful image. The only difference between me and the most vile of all sinners and murderers that roam this fallen earth is Your grace. I have nothing good of myself and choose to cry out, “Forgive us Father for we know not what we do.” I will not stand beside my geographical neighbors as they raise national banners of false victory that mimic the rejoicing of those whom they claim to hate and desire to eradicate.

Do not rejoice when your enemy falls, and let not your heart be glad when he stumbles. Proverbs 24:17

"As I live!" declares the Lord GOD, "I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that the wicked turn from his way and live." Ezekiel 33:11

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. Ephesians 6:12

Related articles: When Men Become Expendable: Part 4, War - Hypocrisy Of The Nations - Pursuing Truth

Emptying/Filling, Part 2 of 2

Read Part 1.

It’s as if we have two tables set before us. Our stomach is growling and hunger is calling out. One table is prepared by the Father and the other is by Self. Self knows what you want to eat quite well. He has set many a table for you… that you have emptied with delight hundreds of times before. It is covered with plates of self-gratifying morsels and items that will promote your image and will bring you pleasure, for a season. Some plates may even be filled with deeds that will bring you earthly gain or honor. This table will shout to you constantly, crying out for you to eat of it.

The other table was set for you from the beginning of time by Father God. There are only two items sitting side by side on one plate in the center of the table. Bread and wine. You know that they represent the Son and hold eternal life and all things that will satisfy your regenerated self. Eating of this table will cause you to lose your life, your image and all desires of self-preservation. Eating of this table will further your dying to self and its wants and desires. Even though you know it alone will satisfy, this table will not demand that you eat of it. Only your regenerated spirit can hear its continuous call to come and dine.

You know that you have the freedom of eating of whichever table you choose. This my friends is where you discover who you are. This is what defines who you live for.

In John 6 Jesus said that He was “the living bread of life” and is the “true food” and “true drink”. In other words, there is an imitation or counterfeit also present. It may look beneficial and perhaps even godly, but in the end it leads to feeding our self-promoting flesh. Until the members of the Body of Christ begin to understand that they are to be constantly filled by the life-giving elements of Christ, daily, they will continue to gorge themselves on religious activities that, in all honesty, are just a different form of worldly conformity. Or they will keep returning to the table of self, the flesh-man, never maturing into disciples of Christ (This is why the doctrine of “rededication” is so rampant throughout the Body of Christ).

If you know for sure that you’ve been born from above, you need to know where you reside. The incredible plan that God set in motion before time began never intended for us to go to the cross and stay there. He never intended us to hang out around the tomb, looking for Him there. He doesn’t desire us to stand in one place in awe of Jesus’ ascension. Christ is seated now, at the right hand of the Father. Those whose lives are hidden with Him are also there, now. (Eph 1:20, 2:5&6) In order to operate out of this position, one must absolutely be walking in the Spirit and feasting on the things of God. Refilling oneself with fleshly cravings cannot fuel your spirit man. We must be found eating of the table that the Lord has set for us for it alone will fill us and enable us to hear what the Spirit is saying in this hour.

In summary, the cross empties, the Spirit fills and imparts life (again reflect on similarities of the “ruach” breath of God). There must be an exchange – one where we exchange our desires via the Spirit that Jesus promised He would send (and in fact did) for those of the Father.

When the Body lacks the guidance of and submission to the Spirit, She cannot daily feast on the Body and the Blood and She becomes gaunt, faint and completely incapable of reproducing Life for She Herself has none. Unless She eats of Him, She will not see the difference between the natural and the spiritual.

Lacking the revelation of this reality will remove the Believers ability to walk in victory and power throughout their days. Instead one will either continue in a cycle of “back-sliding” (I personally despise this word but I know its use will be understood best) or they’ll fill what they were emptied of at the cross with religion, attempting to please God with the very rituals and ceremonies that He in fact abolished.

I urge you to sit down and assess your life, the spiritual as well as the natural for they should always be thoroughly intertwined. Do you regularly choose to sit at the table that calls you to die to yourself, your image and your will? Do you choose to allow the Holy Spirit to be your Comforter and Guide? Do you willingly place yourself in Gods all-consuming fire, purging you of self and all of its impurities that keep us spiritually stagnant in rebellion? When Jesus walked the earth, many people wanted to be around Him and be associated with His marvelous works, but few wanted to be displaced by Him and allow His character to swallow up there identity. I believe this is absolutely still true today. As another Easter comes and goes it’s my prayer, that if you have truly been born from above, that you grasp the great depth of your salvation and see it as your enabler to become a Father-pleasing son or daughter. All that Jesus did on our behalf exemplified our lives today, in Him. Emptying ourselves is not enough. We must begin to take the steps to be filled!

The dying and emptying alone is not enough for they are the catalyst to enable you to be filled and live!

Dead to self, alive to God in Christ Jesus and whole-heartedly led by the Spirit. Amen.

Acts 13:52 And the disciples were continually filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.

Emptying/Filling, Part 1 of 2

This weekend, many will gather to formally celebrate the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. As any avid reader of this blog will quickly tell you, I’m no big proponent of Christianity’s traditions and “church-y” practices that generally coincide with (and often corrupt) the recognition and honoring of biblical events. I’d like to assure you that that’s not what this article is about whatsoever so you can rest easy and proceed.

As many an altar call will be given across this nation this weekend, primarily geared towards the “visitors” who only attend services on holidays, the challenge to “come to the cross” will likely be repeated in record number. “All that you need is at the cross.” “Lay your sin at the foot of the cross.” “Come and meet Jesus at the cross.” Without any question, this a vital and necessary step of one’s salvation experience, but the question that I want to focus on is what then? What happens next? There is surely more to this new journey than simply joining oneself with a denomination and attending their services right? Perhaps signing up for discipleship classes will somehow do the trick? No. What about buying study books and teaching dvd’s? No, that alone won’t do it either. Are we supposed to go to the cross, surrender our very lives and then get up and just hope for the best? Absolutely not! This is why I’ll say, not flippantly whatsoever and with great care, the cross is not enough. Yes you read that correctly. Laying your life at the foot of the cross alone is not enough. Please allow me to explain.

Let me start out where we go from here with another question. Why is it that countless Believers seem to be in the exact same place spiritually today that they were ten, twenty or even thirty years ago when they were “saved”? They’ve matured in the workplace, hobbies, earthly wisdom, parenting, actions and achievements yet they have seen little, if any change in their spiritual growth. Let me ask this as well - what is present in the average life of a Believer that would challenge them to truly mature spiritually on a daily basis? What causes us to mature in the eternal, Kingdom elements of this life? It will obviously not happen by accident nor by simply attending cyclical services a couple of hours a week that require little, if anything from its attendees.

I would venture to say, from personal experience of myself and others that I’ve met throughout the years, that far too many were led to the cross, surrendered their lives the best that they knew how and then just stayed there, forever reveling and reflecting on the functions of the cross. While on the surface this may sound beneficial, I believe it’s an awful place to set up a tent and reside, spiritually speaking.

Is Jesus presently seated at the foot of the cross? If not, where is He? What is He doing? Who am I as a regenerated Kingdom Son, born from above by the Spirit of the Living God? I believe that it’s imperative for Believers to know what the Scriptures say about these questions and grasp that they were never intended to remain at the cross upon salvation.

The cross is a place of death, a place of emptying oneself and embarking on the journey of being conformed to the image of Christ. It is arguably the single most incredible action God ever initiated on our behalf but it is meant to be approached, responded to and used as a launching pad if you will, for the rest of one’s days. Please hear me clearly. The cross was an integral part of what the Trinity was unfolding. Yes, a part.

As I write this I’m reminded of the life-giving breath of God. In Genesis we see this breath impart life into the First Adam and created humankind as we know it. (Please take hold of this word, “impart”.) We see this mirrored in Jesus, the Second Adam as the Spirit of God freed Him after He “descended into the lower parts of the earth”, post- crucifixion (Rom 8:11). This breath of God (also synonymous with the Holy Spirit) injected life into Christ who burst out of sheol/hades in victory as He then ascended to return to His heavenly dwelling (Eph 4:8-10). When one is born from above, there are, as I see it, two primary parts to the process, for it to be headed towards completion. Number one, as we’ve seen, one must come to the cross in submission and surrender, laying their absolute livelihood in the hands of Christ, exchanging their identity and purpose for His. Number two, and this is where I want us to stay for a while, one must stand up, turn (true biblical repentance) and walk a life led by the Spirit who empowers them to be conformed into the image of Christ. This is the great downfall of the Body of Christ right here friends – missing this part of the plan. This is what has been lacking and kept The Church stagnant and infantile spiritually.

Just as the cross is a place of emptying, there must be a constant filling that follows, for the rest of the Believers days. Emptying is not enough. The cross removes, the Spirit imparts.

The exchange one makes at the cross, as I said earlier, is only the beginning and far too many teach it as the end all of Christianity. It is simply the enabling factor for you to become all that you were destined to be in God. It makes it possible for you to hunger and thirst for righteousness. As is the case even in the natural, when something is emptied, it will immediately desire to be re-filled. In the case of salvation, after one empties themselves, an exchange will absolutely follow. Sadly, many, after surrendering their sinful ways will refill their lives with religious laws, duties and rituals. I don’t fault people for this so much anymore because this is simply what they’re taught to believe. What they do not realize however is that’s exactly what Jesus came to this earth to abolish.

Jesus came down and entered this fallen world in the image of man in order to reconcile the relational life that the First Adam possessed, prior to the fall. He re-opened the door to intimacy that the sin of Adam had closed and a new age had come.

What most Christians fail to realize is that the regeneration of salvation is really only an enabler. The regenerated spirit of a man gives us the ability, for the first time, to reciprocate the love of God and to long for Him. The regenerated man is given a heart of flesh that feels and is moved by the Spirit of God. He’s been given eyes to see. But what one does with this is still a choice of the will. Even Jesus, without sin and mere moments from the cross had to surrender His will of flesh as He stated, “Not My will but Thine”. This is why it’s imperative that we be filled, as Jesus taught the disciples, with the life-giving body and blood of Christ. We must eat of it, spiritually and walk according to the Spirit. Only then will we mature spiritually into Father-pleasing sons and daughters of God.

Looking Up

2011: Surprise pregnancy. A small one perhaps, but one nonetheless. Per usual, it was embedded within an undesirable situation. The morning (and several days preceding) that we were set to put a “house for sale” sign in our yard, we had a plumber on-site digging holes in the yard and cutting our main line sewer pipes in order to locate an elusive, root-infested area of our line. Perfectionist as I am, this did not work well into my plans at all. After a couple of days worth of failed attempts, no progress had been made and time was quickly passing by.

As the sounds of the pipe auger were roaring on the other side of the wall, Kristin and I were discussing this frustrating predicament. “I don’t want to put the for sale signs in the yard while a plumber is on-site, digging holes all over the yard outside and having drain issues inside.” I said. I wanted to have the house up for sale two weeks ago but do to horrible weather, awful bouts with the flu and a few other trivial issues, it had not happened. And with the arrival of our first child in August, I absolutely have a clear timeline in my head of how things will need to unfold from here on out regarding a potential move. Kristin stated, “Why now? Why in the world, after living in this house for eight years, would we have this issue the week we’re putting the house up for sale?”. A very valid and appropriate question I thought. But what I thought in response was… well, unexpected.

“What if all of this is happening because of something so much bigger than the surface issue?” I asked in response. “What if this is happening now because whoever will buy this house is praying as we are for our future home. That it will be free from any issues or repairs - in great condition with no secrets or surprises. Just what if this is happening now, to us so that we might bless whoever it is that will buy this house? What if the extra few weeks we’ve needed to get everything in order will allow the perfect buyer to see it at the perfect time?”. I was, somewhat to my own surprise, thinking differently, above the earthly, natural circumstance.

When Kristin and I have been praying together recently, as we look to move and forge into the unknown we just thank God for this house that has been our home for eight years now. We’ve matured here, naturally and spiritually. God has moved here tangibly, in awesome, inexplicable ways in this very study that I now sit and write in. We have been honored and shown the favor of the LORD here. We’ve cried here together in great sadness, disappointments and hurts. We’ve laughed and loved - on the Father, on one another and on others. We thanked Him that the pipes never once overflowed or burst or became an “emergency” situation. We thanked Him for His abundance and for His goodness, together.

You see, this world, even in Christian circles, is just riddled with negativity and despair and "why me?". I just don’t want to live like that.

Much of life is viewed through lenses clouded with disappointment and disdain for so many, overlooking what is right before their eyes. Dread and sadness are powerful things, roaming this earth, robbing scores of people from the joy of the LORD but it doesn’t have to be this way.

So within this little life lesson is buried a great and powerful seed of truth. We absolutely must start viewing circumstances with our spiritual eyes. We must ask the LORD for eyes to see. We must spend time in His awesome, perspective-changing presence! Turn off the news, unplug from the countless hours of internet browsing, gaming and lift your eyes! We who are born from above are now called out to see and experience a life that is not bound to this natural world and its wares! We are reborn for a purpose! Let me ask you to ponder on some of your life experiences. When something you would deem as “bad” happens in your life, what is your response? Dread or joy? Despair and disappointment or opportunity? Anger and doubt or praise and adoration of the Father?

My initial response to life’s challenges is far too often rooted in my natural man. How does it affect me? Why did this happen to me? Self-focus and self-preservation, the natural response. But I’m a new creation. I’m an heir. I’m an Ambassador for The Christ. I’ve been made alive, regenerated. I don’t have to follow this earthly, natural mindset anymore for I’ve been reborn! The mind of Christ that I am to “put on” takes action, just like putting on shoes or a coat. I must take action to change my ways of thinking, renewing my mind. It’s imperative for the Body of Christ to stop looking at everything from an earthly, natural perspective. How we share Christ with others, how we gather, what we do with our finances, how we look, what caste we’re a part of, what we spend our time and efforts doing, how define success, how we respond to disappointments or trials, etcetera.

We must develop and cultivate our spiritual perspective!

The Word tells us that those who are in Christ are seated with Him now in heavenly places. This perspective is where I want to see from and respond out of. I long to meditate more and more on what is eternal. When a challenge comes, I desire to stop and seek the words of the Spirit first. What is He saying? What outcome is He desiring to see come to pass from this? How can this circumstance assist in my becoming more Christ-like? May we begin to think through our responses and get above the mindset of the natural that is so limiting.

In John chapter 6 hordes of people followed Jesus as He performed miracles, signs and wonders. It's worthwhile to note that these were not just all random crowds but also "many of His disciples". After He began to turn their attention to spiritual matters (vs. 26), everything changed. The people then began to grumble and then, in verse 66, "As a result of this many of His disciples withdrew and were not walking with Him anymore." May we who would consider ourselves a disciple of Christ, not do likewise, reveling in what Jesus can do for us in the natural, but completely missing His entire purpose and meaning of it all, the spiritual. If the Body of Christ doesn't learn to walk according to the spirit, She will continue to walk forward alone in Her own natural strengths and abilities, leaving Jesus behind.

We, who often boastfully claim to be not of this world, need to start acting like it.

I wonder if there were some way to accurately calculate how often professing Believers walk according to the Spirit as opposed as to their natural flesh, what results we'd find. I think we'd be appalled. I do often wonder why the Body of Christ at large seems so disinterested in, and often completely opposed to matters of the Spirit. Perhaps it all boils down to our unwillingness to embark into the unknown, laying down control of our lives in complete submission. Should our perspective and views on the circumstances of life not be so radical and different than the natural, worldly kind? Sadly, there is just little difference to be found. It is a work of the Spirit of the Living God. Only He can enable us and teach us, but it is our responsibility to place ourselves under His guidance and discipline, putting on the mind of Christ. I urge you today to quiet yourself. Hear what the Spirit of the LORD is saying in this hour, in the midst of your life situations. The question is not, “Is He speaking today?” but rather “Are we listening?” and if we are faithful and willing to listen, will we heed what we hear, no matter how it may oppose the common, natural perspective? I say today, may the people of the Lord begin to put on the mind of Christ, giving them eyes to see and ears to hear in this hour forsaking all else that would hinder this change in perspective. Amen.

Mercy Triumphs Over Judgment, Part 4

[Part 1, Part 2, Part 3]

Conclusion and Afterthoughts

After I wrote this article, I reflected on this topic quite a bit more. The more I meditated on it, the more it seemed like it all boiled down to one question – what kingdom do I choose to represent and reside in? I found myself asking some questions, “Why don’t I get riled up when someone tears Christianity up one side and down the other? Why don’t I become offended when someone speaks badly of this nation? Why don’t I have any issues with all of the differences within Christian doctrines and denominations? It’s surely not because I don’t know what I believe or am short on passion, so what is it? What I arrived at is simple. My identity cannot be found in any of these things. I don’t buy into all of the religious mess of Christianity, so it’s not about who or what I am labeled. My eternal residence is not limited to this nation, so I don’t need to defend her or be offended if someone speaks poorly of her. She is not my home to defend or represent. I don’t belong to any denominations of men because they’re all riddled with division and segregation, so I have no affiliation that can be threatened.

This is why one who has been given new eyes to see the eternal Kingdom (Psalm 145:13) easily sees all of the vain and temporal efforts and advances of American religion. It gives those willing to disconnect from this temporal identity and reputation freedom to advance one kingdom and one King – Christ and His Kingdom! With this viewpoint, this kingdom shift, what the majority see as beneficial and successful looks like temporal refuse. It is the simple biblical understanding that I am truly an alien here. When Jesus said that the kingdom is “at hand”, He did not mean it is this earth. It is “here” in the sense that it is parallel to this reality that we know as this physical, temporal life. It is attainable but only accessible to those who have been born from above. Only these have been enabled to see the kingdom of heaven (John 3:3). It is a Kingdom that is not of this world. No earthly kingdom can contain this kingdom, not even America. There can only be one kingdom that remains. One throne and one king sitting upon it. My challenge is to any who would hear. Do all that you can to make sure that absolutely everything in your life is placed under the kingship of Jesus, The Christ. All I desire is to urge all of us to lay aside any other thing that seeks to be exalted above God in our lives. Even seemingly “good” things can cause us to completely miss the “best”.

May we be found living out 1 Peter 2:9-12 in humility and constant remembrance that we’re all in need of a merciful Saviour.

But you are A CHOSEN RACE, a royal PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE FOR God's OWN POSSESSION, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; for you once were NOT A PEOPLE, but now you are THE PEOPLE OF GOD; you had NOT RECEIVED MERCY, but now you have RECEIVED MERCY. Will anyone take the lower position? Will anyone believe that good can actually overcome evil? Who, before casting handfuls of stones will read what Jesus has written before us in the sand? Who will stand for what Jesus taught us and lay aside all of the patriotic-laced jargon and mindset that elevates us above others? I absolutely hate this favoritism mentality yet still see it buried deep within me from my upbringing in this nation. It all goes deep, my friend. We’re taught from birth to embrace what we like and, forgive my frankness, give the finger to what we don’t. It’s sickening and reeks of fleshly pride.

“For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you.” Jesus Christ in Matthew 7:2.

What the world needs to see, to know, is the agape of God. Love that knows no personal gain or elevation above another. We are all equal men and women sharing the earth for this season in time. No man is less deserving of love, forgiveness and mercy than I and absolutely no man is lesser. The King of all Glory, seated enthroned from before time and space as we know it even existed humbled Himself and became flesh and dwelt among us. He saw every man worthy of His life. (Yes, even those that you hate and believe deserve death.) When properly viewed (with the skewed lens of Christian-American morality laid aside) the biblical mandate given to us by Jesus, The Christ demands we love unconditionally and without favoritism. Interestingly, those who cast the most judgment in His day, hung Him, the very Son of God, naked on a cross with great delight because He opposed their earthly laws of judgment and elevation. They hated His teachings that all could come to God. The message that even the common, most vile man could approach God infuriated them because they thought that they alone should have access to Him. Sadly, little has changed and this depraved mindset still permeates modern-day Christianity. The elevated religious mindset still declares to all others that they deserve death if they do not conform to the established standards and doctrines.

Is not even the world capable of befriending those who look, believe, act and speak as they do? (Luke 6:27-32) Church, will you lay aside your favoritism, prejudices, phobia’s, judgments and hypocrisy for the greater Kingdom? I choose the one that is not of this world… and yes, I’m fully aware that it’s not at all “American”. A man cannot serve two masters.

In conclusion, may we hear and heed the words of James (chock full of wisdom that American Christianity could glean from).

My brethren, do not hold your faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ with an attitude of personal favoritism. For if a man comes into your assembly with a gold ring and dressed in fine clothes, and there also comes in a poor man in dirty clothes, and you pay special attention to the one who is wearing the fine clothes, and say, "You sit here in a good place," and you say to the poor man, "You stand over there, or sit down by my footstool," have you not made distinctions among yourselves, and become judges with evil motives? Listen, my beloved brethren: did not God choose the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him? But you have dishonored the poor man. Is it not the rich who oppress you and personally drag you into court? Do they not blaspheme the fair name by which you have been called? If, however, you are fulfilling the royal law according to the Scripture, "YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF," you are doing well.

But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors.

For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all. For He who said, "DO NOT COMMIT ADULTERY," also said, "DO NOT COMMIT MURDER." Now if you do not commit adultery, but do commit murder, you have become a transgressor of the law. So speak and so act as those who are to be judged by the law of liberty.

For judgment will be merciless to one who has shown no mercy; mercy triumphs over judgment. James 2:1-13

This series will conclude on Thursday with Part 4, a variance of afterthoughts summarizing this topic.

Mercy Triumphs Over Judgment, Part 2

[Part 1]

So who decides who deserves to die? The American government? A denomination or political party? I know from experience that many Christians would quickly spew verses about how we’re to obey the laws of the land. OK then, let’s be balanced. Stop denouncing abortion as it is currently a legal right voted on and passed. Stop picketing against gays and everyone else that you see as inferior. They have legal rights as American citizens. Stop taking a stand against the side of the government that you don’t like individually! The Christian majority is absolutely teeming with hypocrisy and it sickens me. Here’s a news flash that perhaps some need to understand. Jesus did not die for America! God didn’t sacrifice His Son so that Americans could have the “freedom” to kill who they deem as worthy of killing. America is a worldly, temporal kingdom just as any other and any kingdom that exalts Itself above the one that Christ Himself is building is coming down – period.

Let me say something and please listen carefully. The reason that God sent His Son to earth as not to have buildings full of good, moral people. He calls those who claim to follow Him to be holy as He is holy. There are plenty of good moral people who have nothing whatsoever to do with Christianity. There must be more to ones spiritual life than just being a good American Christian. I’d like to be clear that I’m thankful that God chose for me to live out my days in this nation. With that being said, there’s a huge chasm between thankfulness and idolatry. I don’t believe in the generic “America is a blessed nation” statement either. I say this because being biblically “blessed” vastly differs from what we’ve come to know blessing to mean. Let me ask, does “those who are poor in spirit, gentle, persecuted because of righteousness, are meek, who hunger and thirst for righteousness” and are “merciful peacemakers” sound like the American way to you? In fact, I’d say we often lead the way in being the exact opposite in these biblical characteristics of those who are “blessed” (spoken by Jesus Himself). I’d be much more prone to believe that we are exponentially closer to what John saw when he described the Laodicean church in Revelation 3:17. “You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked.”

On a side note, I’d like to address the ones attempting to rally an outcry about how we need to return this great nation to the way our forefathers intended. Here’s just a diminutive snippet of quotes for those who always promote that our founding fathers had this grand Christian agenda that we must somehow recapture. John Adams once stated “This would be the best of all possible worlds, if there were no religion in it.” He also signed the Treaty of Tripoli (while Washington was President) which states “The Government of the United States is not in any sense founded on the Christian religion.” The treaty goes on to state, “The United States is not a Christian nation any more than it is a Jewish or a Mohammedan [Muslim] nation.” (I can hear the corporate gasp at this one.) Speaking of George Washington, a man who many would love to invite to their church or patriotic rally to speak about how “Christian” this great nation was supposed to be, he stated that “The United States of America should have a foundation free from the influence of clergy.” Well that’s not very Christian-American now is it! What about Thomas Jefferson? He was quoted as saying "I have examined all the known superstitions of the world and I do not find in our particular superstition of Christianity one redeeming feature.” Interestingly, in 1792 he stated that “Christianity will be the ruin of America”. Ben Franklin, in 1758, “Lighthouses are more helpful than churches.” Lastly, and perhaps most wisely, Franklin stated “Religion, I found to be without any tendency to inspire, promote, or confirm morality, serves principally to divide us and make us unfriendly to one another.” What a mouthful that is! I include this to make the point that a foundation built upon absolutely anything other than Christ alone cannot support an eternal house. Traditions, fables and feel-good Christian-American patriotism is not enough and is severely flawed! The pro Christian-American agenda is headed for a great fall my friend. It is full of cracks and error and will not withstand the upcoming age.

With this in mind, let me say something that I want to be crystal clear. Jesus Christ will not be placed upon the throne of America. Let me say that again.

Jesus, The Christ will never be seated upon the throne of America.

(Perhaps some of you will need to stop here and ponder on this statement.) His Kingdom is not of this world, remember? Until we grasp that, Christianity will continue to strive to do today what the people did in His days upon the earth. His intent was never to rule an earthly, temporal kingdom! Not then and surely not now! Somehow we’ve been duped to think that Jesus would gladly take the position of President or something (our version of what the Jews wanted – an earthly king). Or perhaps He’d seat Himself in a war plane and fly off to kill America’s “enemies” with great vengeance and wrath! Seriously? We do not seem to know the Jesus Christ of the Bible at all! Either that or we just turn a blind eye to His teachings. We must properly see Christ as He is, not as who we want Him to be.

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.” Jesus Christ in Matthew 5:9

I see things all the time that promote this prideful way of thinking. For example, a bumper sticker on a customer’s car that I recently did some work for (and I personally know that they’re Christians) exclaims “Give me MY America back!”. “Your America”? What does that even mean? Who do we think we are? This simple statement sums up a vast subject for me. Illegals? Go back to your home! Stop stealing our jobs! So you’re gay huh? Stop being gay! God hates you for it and so do I. You unpatriotic people, you’re just ungrateful and rebellious. Move to Canada! Non-believers, why can’t you just come to church and be like us? That evil man killed a policeman? Put him in the chair and let God judge Him! He’s an animal anyway, not a man. Atheists? Just snap your fingers and believe like me! Look at that homeless guy. Come on man, just get a job and pay your taxes like I do! Stop sponging off of me like all the welfare degenerates. Drunks, users, addicts, prostitutes you disgust us. Go hide in a gutter somewhere where we can’t see you. What? You aborted a baby? You’re a murderer! *sigh* American Christianity boasts the most prideful and arrogant viewpoints in all of Western culture and I believe it grieves God greatly. We’ve elevated ourselves above seemingly everyone else and have somehow deemed ourselves as untouchable and innocent. We categorize who has value and who does not and then act accordingly. In other words, to put it bluntly, “you believe and look like me, therefore you matter and you, who don’t believe and look as I do, do not”.

I watched this play out clearly when Congresswoman Giffords was shot a few months back. Since she’s prominent and “important”, the event instantly received national exposure. You can still find blogs demanding this shooter be hung, mutilated, tortured, etc. Sadly, many of the comments claim to be authored by professing Christians who are calling for justice to be served. If you kill, you will be killed. It’s the American way, right? But what did Jesus say about this mentality? “You have heard that it was said, ‘AN EYE FOR AN EYE, AND A TOOTH FOR A TOOTH.’ "But I say to you, do not resist an evil person; but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.” Matthew 5:38 and 39 This slams the door on those who desire to cling to an Old Testament “slay your enemies” approach. The question at the heart of the matter is why the vast majority would rather embrace the role of executing God’s wrath and judgment as opposed to walking in love, forgiveness and mercy. I believe it’s because they have a skewed, “angry-God” point of view when they think of God. Their actions speak that they don’t know Him as loving Father and therefore they have no point of reference to extend His unconditional agape love to anyone else. As I’ve stated many times, it is one-dimensional Christianity that lacks the fullness of Who God is and projects a distorted image of the Father.

It seems Paul understood how we’re to live as those who profess to know Christ.

“Do not return evil for evil. Avenge not yourselves, but rather give way to wrath; for it is written, vengeance is mine; I will repay, says the Lord. Therefore if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsts, give him drink: for in so doing you shall heap coals of fire on his head. Be not overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” Romans 12:17-21

“See that none render evil for evil to any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men.” I Thessalonians 5:15

Part 3 will post Monday.

Mercy Triumphs Over Judgment, Part 1

“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.” Jesus Christ in Matthew 5:7.

“Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you.” Jesus Christ in Matthew 7:2

I’m completely aware that the following topic is one that will likely offend many readers. My goal is not to get people riled up but rather to point the teachings of Christ and the advancement of His Kingdom while presenting perspective that greatly opposes the majority. We must be willing to turn loose of what we hold so dear to ever be found teachable and ready to embrace what the Lord instructed us to do upon this earth. Our own rationale and personal preference must be set aside in order to even be open to hear what the Lord is speaking to His people. Please keep in mind that His ways are not our ways nor do His plans always seem to make sense to us as we’ve drifted so far away from what He intended. We must be careful not to confuse “the way it’s always been” in this nation with who we’re called to be as born from above Believers. They are rarely ever one in the same.

For the past several months, I’ve gone to the chiropractor on a weekly basis. Every Thursday morning, I’m brought back to a private room and wait for the guy who is working to get my messed up neck and spine aligned to arrive. Although I usually never wait more than five or ten minutes at the most, I don’t sit well with nothing to tinker with, watch or do for very long. So, with that being said, I usually become engaged with the live radio that plays over the speakers. Since my appointments are almost always at the same time each week, I always hear the same broadcast. I won’t go into detail as to who it is, because it’s irrelevant really. This guy is a pretty well-known, nationally syndicated radio show host though, primarily in the Southeast. Now I understand that this guy caters primarily to people prone to attend NASCAR races and who likely know the lyrics to every top forty song in country music today, but it’s this guy’s stance on some important issues that really gets me riled up.

He often says things that offend me, as a follower of Christ, but I’m pretty accustomed to that. The interesting thing is, he’s the perfect poster child for patriotic Christian America. He seems to be completely OK with the belief that the American military can and should execute their power wherever and however they feel is appropriate. He often rants about how people who “don’t like America the way it is should just pack up and leave with all of the illegals”. He, as expected, is always telling stories that (I guess) are supposed to make grown men shed a tear or two. Sappy, American patriotism banter that cause people to envision fighter jets flying overhead as Old Glory waves in the background. It is the usual uber-patriotic fare really. Nothing too original with the exception of his occasional discussion of hunting and fishing expeditions.

Several weeks ago though, he crossed the line. (Well, my line anyway, which is nothing special or exact I might add.) Apparently in a preceding show that had already aired (that I didn’t hear), the discussion was surrounding an incident where a guy shot and killed a police officer. The host had apparently spent a great deal of time sharing how, in his opinion, this murderer of this police officer deserved to “be fried for his heinous act against one of America’s finest”. In the show that I heard, that reflected back on the previous broadcast, he read a letter on the air. It was from a concerned listener, a housewife I believe. She referred to herself as a Christian who wanted to promote another viewpoint on the matter. Her letter challenged the “murder the murderer” mentality and asked the host to consider the teachings of Christ. She basically encouraged the host to consider if Jesus sees us all equally. The fact that no one is “worse” than another and that we have all been shown God’s compassion, mercy and grace. She ended the letter with, in summary, “Shouldn’t we see this guy how God sees him? Shouldn’t we extend God’s love and forgiveness to him just like we’ve been shown?”

I was actually anxiously awaiting the host’s response as she posed her viewpoint quite well, and most importantly, biblically. Would he take a step back from his boastfully ugly stance and recant? Would he consider this listeners point of view and meet her in the middle? I truly was waiting for his response. And what was it? “Ma’am, should we show God’s love to this cop-killing murderer? I must say, absolutely not!” he exclaimed. He’d go on to rant about how this “cop-killer, degenerate of a man deserved to rot in hell for the atrocities that he’s done!” Really? “He deserved to rot in hell?” He went on to talk about how proud he was to be a patriotic Christian American that didn’t tolerate such heinous activity, especially against a defender of the people. “The Christian thing to do would be to execute good old fashioned American justice”, he’d go on to say. (I won’t even go into how immediately after this segment he discussed how “hot” a certain woman who had been on the show was and the jesting innuendo of what he’d like to do with her.)

“Do not judge, and you will not be judged; and do not condemn, and you will not be condemned; pardon, and you will be pardoned.” Jesus Christ in Luke 6:37

I couldn’t believe my ears as he continued on with his self-proclaimed pro-“Christian patriot” sermon. It would seem, to an untrained ear who wasn’t already indoctrinated from birth by this stuff, that the white Christian American patriot should eradicate all others who oppose them. It was as if I could hear the cheers of the patriotic Christian majority who were listening cheering “Kill him! Kill him!” throughout the reach of the broadcast. And they’d be justified and elated in doing so. Body of Christ, is this right? Is this what we have learned from studying the teachings of Jesus? The absolute only “man” to ever walk the earth and have the right to execute wrath and judgment laid down his own life for these “heinous” murderers, myself included! I’ve lusted after women, do I deserve death? I’ve stolen, should I be beaten until my accusers are satisfied? I’ve lied and had thoughts that would cause others to despise me. Do I also deserve to be put to death for my actions? I’d like the opportunity to ask the radio host if his daughter had an abortion and willingly killed an innocent baby within her womb, does she also deserve to be dragged off to the electric chair for her actions? To be true to this “defending the innocent” ideal, then absolutely yes. But that is different right? Or what of the thousands of innocent women and children (or the teenage boys who know nothing of what they’re fighting for, in many instances) that become casualties of wars that this nation wages? Are they not guiltless as well? Well, that is just how it is, right? We decide who is worthy of life and who is not and it’s all rooted in arrogance and pride.

“But if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions.” Jesus Christ in Matthew 6:15.

Part 2 to post later this week. The religious roots of American Christianity run deep my friends. I think it's healthy to step back and take a look into how we see Jesus and the absurdity of how Christianity often comes across. Also, quite often "traditional" Jesus differs greatly from the biblical Jesus and Who He is really, is often horribly misrepresented. My goal is to get us to step back and ask ourselves, is Jesus really who I perceive Him to be? This list will hopefully challenge and confront us a little so that we can move toward knowing Who Jesus, The biblical Christ really is. Some are light-hearted and some are considerably serious. Oh, and, and one more thing, prepare to be offended.

It's All About Me Jesus

Perfect for that honest and direct friend, or possibly, and more likely, for yourself! Upon purchase, place your thumb upon the scanner inlay on Jesus's right hand and this figure will be activated to recognize your touch. If anyone other than you touches Him, a fifty decibel alarm embedded in His mouth will sound. A built-in voice recorder enables you to record and play back whatever you desire Jesus to say to you – you are in control! This figure also comes installed with the altered worship song entitled, "It's All About Me, Jesus". Don't let someone rob you of the adoration and attention that you deserve! Get It's All About Me Jesus today!

Damnation Jesus

Our most high-tech Jesus figure yet! Comes with two settings options - "good" and "evil". The mode setting is dependent upon who is holding Him and the best part is that you get to choose who is "good" and "evil"! When in "good" mode, Jesus smiles and coos as an internal mp3 player plays soothing ocean sounds, subtly indicative of what heaven will be like. When switched over to "evil" and handed to the appropriate person, an implanted heater coil warms Jesus up to a whopping 250 degrees Fahrenheit, an audio clip of screams is emitted and red lasers shoot out of His eyes! Let your "lost" or "backslidden" friends know how you really view them, in a safe and fun kinda way, with Damnation Jesus! (Especially popular with evangelicals and traditionalists!)

Religious Rebel Jesus (Originally named "I Left Organized Religion and Now My Christian Friends Won't Talk To Me Jesus)

The perfect gift for your friends who have exchanged attending church services for home gatherings. Religious Rebel Jesus will speak to your insubordinate friend so that you don't have to! He will arrive adorned in a hand-sewn tshirt that states, "Choose Conformity" on the front. Although originally intended to play audio clips of Scripture defending the current order of organized religion, Religious Rebel Jesus will simply repeat "Go to church, friend… please" as we have yet to find any verses that support such commonly-embraced religious activities (but we're trying!). * We do not recommend, condone or endorse anyone ever consider leaving organized church to gather without someone telling them what to do. Chaos and disorder will absolutely ensue. Don't be a religious rebel.

Homeless, Poor and Outcast Jesus

Although entirely biblically accurate, this figure has been discontinued because no one bought Him. It seems we overstepped our market as people seemingly only want to see happy and handsome Jesus bounding about with delight.

Traditional Church Jesus

This Jesus is specifically designed to never fade, wear or change in any fashion, ever. He is made of space-age-grade polymers that will assure His longevity. He comes with several clothing options to match your specific service attire from the classic suit-and-tie look to the more modern polo and khaki ensemble. He doesn't do a whole lot, but He sure is predictable and scheduled and isn't that what really matters? * Can only be activated on Sundays from 10:00AM to Noon and Wednesday nights 7:00-8:30PM local time.

Platinum Level Partner Jesus

Due to the enormous success of our "Gold Level Partner Jesus" from 2007, we're now prepared to give you an even greater opportunity! Sadly, Revered Dolorznsenz's ministry has found itself in financial crisis recently and is need of your support. All new Platinum Level partners will receive a stunning platinum-colored Jesus figure accompanied by a display light! Perfect for your mantle or display case. Order ten (10) or more and receive a complimentary spray bottle of the reverend's patented "Miracle Mist" body spray. Become a partner today and receive a miracle tomorrow!

GI Jesus

Despite it being well-known that the biblical Jesus Himself stated that we're to "love [y]our enemies" and to "never resist an evildoer", we feel that this new release will likely quickly become our best-seller. Now you can go on make-believe missions with GI Jesus, eradicating the earth of evil terrorists! Forget that they're men and women created in the image of God just like you! What fun is that? GI Jesus comes fully armed with grenades, assault rifles and an assorted collection of hand-to-hand combat knives. Gore, stab, gun down and obliterate other human beings, all in God's name! * Must be 18 years or older. Only available in the United States.

Emergent Jesus

Our hippest, most relevant Jesus figure to date! Anything goes and whatever you're into, yea, this post-modern Jesus is down with that! Non-confrontational, agreeable and best of all, He just wants to hang out with ya. Buddhist, Hindu, Jewish, Christian… does it really even matter? Not to Emergent Jesus! Emergent Jesus will arrive wearing officially licensed, Abercrombie and Fitch clothing and a smile, with arms extended and two thumbs up as if to say "What's up brah?" * A vast accessory line is also available online at www.jesusforeveryseason.com/emergent.

Transformer Jesus

Let's be frank, we all know that it's no secret that Christian toys generally mimic "worldly" ones. But that doesn't mean that Christian toys can't be totally awesome!!!! So it's time fooooor, Traaaaansfoooormer Jeeeeesuuuuuuuuus!!! At first glance, it looks like our traditional Jesus figure, but wait! It has one hundred and twenty (yes 120!) moving parts! With twists and turns, Jesus transforms into Moses, John the Baptist annnnnnd Biblemaaaaaaan! Yes! (We know that Transformers are so Christmas 2008, but hey, we're trying!)

Rapture-Ready Jesus

We thought to ourselves, Hey! We have tornado drills, hurricane preparation exercises, fire drills and other "escape" plans in order, why not practice and prepare for the rapture?! This Jesus figure can be cloaked in invisibility at the push of a button and will reappear later without warning! While He's gone you can take the time to make sure you're not backslidden or behind on tithing. This Jesus comes with a Rapture Kit full of fantastic tools you'll need, such as: A how-to guide on how to fold your clothes neatly in a pile and place where you stood before you were swept up. A compact disc with the song "Sweet Beulah Land" on it. A stationary and pencil to write notes that you can leave for your lost friends that will be suffering God's immeasurable wrath after you've gone. A stencil to make a sign that says "Hey Jesus, I'm right here… hurry!" (Just to be sure He doesn't miss you of course.) A set of hand-sewn silk wings that tie behind your back to help prepare you for eternity. Don't get all wrapped up in the goings on outside in the real world, just stay inside where it's safe and play with your Rapture-Ready Jesus! Look out, here He comes!

Tithes and Offerings Jesus

This Jesus is no toy, folks. This figurine is here to remind you that you are obligated to give 10% of your income to your local church. Here's how He works. Using the embedded calculator on His back, enter your weekly household income when you receive your Tithes and Offerings Jesus (the internal memory will automatically save your data for future use). Press the "tithe" button and Jesus will calculate and display what you are to give – it's that simple! Think of it as a tip calculator for God! Want to step it up and give "over and above" as well? No problem! Use the "offerings" button and designate where you'd like it go, such as paving parking lots, building bigger buildings and increasing pastoral salaries! We all know that the Bible instructs us to live lifestyles of giving generously, with a cheerful heart, to those in need, but who does that, really? Comes complete with interactive feature technology! If you skip a payment tithe, the face of Jesus will scowl in displeasure. A great reminder that He is watching!

Santa Jesus

For years, Santa Claus and Jesus have been portrayed as being at odds with one another. Well, no longer! Why not let peace and harmony reign this holiday and get the figure that brings both historical figures together into one! What's wrong with that? He looks just like everybody else, but that's OK. This is the perfect Jesus to make you feel better about being just like the world - a real confidence booster for those who don't feel like pursuing the "Biblical" Jesus. After all, who could do that anyway, right?

Sweet Baby Doll Jesus

The perfect Jesus for your non-confrontational Christian friends or those that want to be careful not to offend others! The extent of our plans was to make a big brunch at home and then venture out to the mall to do some Christmas shopping. All could not have been any less memorable, until early afternoon arrived. Within five minutes of being inside the mall, I was on the floor in the middle of the hustle and bustle, blacking out. I still remember vividly looking up now and then, after Kristin got me into a mall wheelchair and sped through the hordes of shoppers, across the mall and out into the cold. I'd soon be put in an ambulance, taken to the hospital, tested, released, re-admitted then placed in ICU for multiple tests and monitoring. It was eventually determined, that at 36, I had suffered a stroke.

Here I sit a year later, healed whole, active and completely restored. The ruptured vertebral artery that caused it all, healed. The abnormal narrowing of the artery that was the source of the rupture, no longer narrow. Even the neurologists could never explain how I don't even have any scar tissue. The most educated, experienced doctors in the field of neurology in our area and all they could say was "I just don't see anything wrong with you now. This doesn't even look like the same artery." Well, that's because it wasn't! After I had returned home from the hospital in December, I located an artist's rendering of the human head and neck and its incredible arterial system. I wrote Scriptures all over it and spoke life and healing to that specific artery as I looked upon it. For months I asked God to give me the vertebral artery of the first Adam, before the Fall. The perfect, unflawed, unblemished artery that He spoke into being and formed perfectly with His own hands. Incredibly, that is exactly what was discovered in my last CT Scan. No narrowing, no scars, no issues whatsoever. Incredible!

It's been roughly nine months since I was told that news and that I was well and could begin to return to normal life again, free from medications and cautiousness. I'll never be able to count the times that I've had to confront the fears of "what if it happens again?" I'll never be able to appropriately explain how I often wonder if all is "OK in there" with my artery. I guess it's just a "natural" response. But here's the thing, I've refused, and will continue, to reflect on what the LORD has done that directly opposes what the natural mind might wonder. I willfully choose to dwell on my healing. What took place in my physical body could not even be explained nor understood by doctors. It was a supernatural work, a literal regeneration of life. Therefore, it's with that mentality that I choose to approach it, regarding my thought patterns and opportunities to fear. I have been given the mind of Christ, and I intend to keep using it.

When confronted with the "what if's", I rejoice. I thank God for His wonderful acts! I remind the enemy that what he intended to harm us strengthened us beyond words. The absolute honest truth about the entire experience is this - if I could go back and somehow avert it all, I would not change anything. Within this trial I found peace like I'd never known. I learned to truly rest in my Father's strength. I saw the Body of Christ come together around me in an incredible way. I experienced feelings and emotions I'd never known existed. I tangibly felt the presence of God in my hospital room on one specific evening. I saw family members given the opportunity to choose to embrace this love of God that I know. I literally saw the strength of the LORD in the eyes of my incredible wife. In the midst of what, on the outside looked frightening, peace and power reigned. It was absolutely incredible.

Only fondness of this time remains within my memory, not fear, not ever "God, how could You?". He carried us through without fail. The months since then have been awesome. Even after missing three months of work, my business has had its largest grossing year to date. All of the medical bills are being paid each month, without issue. My health could not be better and I've had countless opportunities to share what God has done. So, all that's really left to say is this, Praise God for His faithfulness. He alone is my Strength, my Shield, my Source and my LORD. I will dwell in His house forever as His son and I'll be forever grateful for what He's done in my life. To whom else do I turn? None other. He is my everything.

* To read the entire account of all that took place, go here.

Spiritual HD

We recently replaced our old tube TV with a flatscreen, 1080p, high definition. Whether it's when I'm flipping through the HD channels or watching a DVD, I'm amazed at the picture that it can produce. The colors are so vibrant, the depth so…. well, deep. But what really amazes me is what my eyes are capable of processing. They're obviously capable of beholding such incredible color and clarity. The advances in technology will surely never fully catch up to all that the incredible human body is capable of seeing. As I was sharing with my dad about how I'm anticipating watching NCAA football and basketball in HD this fall, I got to thinking about, as I often do, the spiritual view of a simple life experience.

Is this same principal not the same in the realm of the spiritual? As with an HD signal in the natural, the spiritual ability to see and hear - to process we'll say - exists. The potential to capture and see it is there. You simply need something capable of transferring that signal into a picture. When God breathed the breath of life into mankind, He placed within us all the ability to know Him intimately- to hear Him, see Him, feel, experience Him. Spiritually speaking, many don't even realize that there is a "signal" trying to get through. Some have their "television" on mute because they don't like what they hear. Others are OK with watching a signal that only broadcasts in snowy black and white. Many only watch the channels that they like – the ones that make them feel all warm and fuzzy. Some people though have discovered that a "high-definition" connection exists and have experienced the awesome "programming" that is available to them, originating from the very throne of God Himself. Jesus, The Christ is the absolute only way to gain access to this signal. In Christ, I now have been enabled to commune with God – supernaturally brought from death to life. The Holy Spirit guides us into a realization of this remarkable experience and it is our choice on whether or not we daily live in this reality and receive all that is broadcast.

I want spiritual HD.

Do you want to dwell in the fullness of all that God desires for you to experience? I do. Just as I've upgraded in the natural, I desire to stay connected to the signal that God is broadcasting. There is no limit to what we can see and hear that He is declaring! We could spend every second of our lives embarking to know the innumerable facets of God and never even scratch the surface of all that He is. What signal are you getting? If you could relate it to a television, what is it that you're viewing? Just as the parable of the old wineskins, today's "signal" cannot be viewed on a console set from 1972. God is the same yesterday today and forever, so it's not about receiving a "better" broadcast now as opposed to then. It's the simple fact that we must be willing to constantly assess our approach to hearing what the Spirit is saying in the current hour. If anything keeps me from beholding all that God is broadcasting to mankind, I want to cast it aside. All that hinders and obstructs my view of Him must go. If I can obtain something, whether it be from fellowship with Him or revelation within His Word, I want it. Anything that enhances my intimacy with Him is what I'm seeking.

Whether it be television channels, radio signals or what the LORD is speaking, they are all being broadcast all around us, yet they're only heard when one tunes in to hear and see them. Only when you deliberately seek it out can you experience what's being transmitted. Check your spiritual receiver today and first and foremost, make sure you're connected. Take the time necessary to tweak the signal. If necessary, update your wineskin so that you can receive what the Spirit is saying in this hour. Don't be afraid to throw out the old, out-dated one that you've been using! There are no bounds to what we, as ones created in the very image of God Himself, can experience of Him in the here and now. Spiritual HD. I kind of like the sound of that.
