Greetings Everyone!

February 3rd marked Julie Benken's birthday.

It was now 5 years ago that nearly all of us attended the untimely funeral of the MOST spirited, energetic, and dedicated woman to grace many of our lives. I think each of us can recall a memory from that fateful day when we heard the news, or visited with the family, or simply took time to pay our respects to one of the great leaders in UC Band history.

Julie was an unabashed optimist whose zeal for the UC Band, the University of Cincinnati, and each one of us made her one of the most unique people we've ever had the chance to meet. I remember many fond things about her, from my first day a pre-camp on the old Field #2 (where the baseball stadium stands today) where she yelled at me about my mark time, to her pledging as an Honorary of Kappa Kappa Psi in my pledge class, to her travelling with us on all the bowl trips, to the very last trip she couldn't make from her cancer.

Julie posing with the 2000 Kappa Kappa Psi pledge class!

I think it goes without saying that Julie truly embodied the very best of all of us, and encouraged all of us to be better than we are.

Julie and the Bearcat! :-)

One of her passions was the Drum Majors of the UC Band. Each of us that served in that position knew a different kind of Julie...LOL! She was pushy, in-your-face, and demanded a level of excellence from all who listened. (And even those who didn't). With the consent of her parents, and assistance from the University we had an idea to form a Society of Drum Majors to formalize education, recognize those members who serve, and in turn support the band she loved so dearly. It was her wish to see something happen, and through many years of hard work and perseverance, the group recently succeeded coincidentally around the date of her birthday! A fitting tribute to a dream held by Julie and her family!

Julie with Dr. Frenz

Julie with Mike Rutherford and Jessica Knause

Breast cancer is really the culprit here. Julie had her bought with breast cancer and 2 different remissions before it finally won, but it NEVER broke her spirit for the band, for life in general, and for her students and friends. She even had a yellow stuffed animal duck that quacked when you squeezed it, and based on comments from her parents, she never once stopped squeezing the bill while she was in the hospital towards the worst of her symptoms.

I'll share one of the most impactful memories for me during the day of the funeral:

Julie's Pledge Brothers at the funeral.

Her funeral caravan was MILES long and even had a few cars involved in accidents on the way from the Church to the cemetery. I remember the UC Band there playing a concert, specifically A Hymnsong on Philip Bliss. Later that spring the service organizations performed that piece live in front of nearly 1000 people at their District Convention held in Cincinnati. I was a member of the 6 Drum Majors in uniform as pallbearers and recall the UC Band played Shaka Zulu at the front of the church as the casket left the church for the hearse.

At the close of the Benediction at the cemetery the 6 Drum Majors stood up and approached the casket. In one of the hardest things I've ever had to do in my life, I joined with my fellow DM's and we proceeded to do the dismissal cadence for the UC Band. Nothing can explain the eerie silence that ensued and finally dismissing Julie to her heavenly rest. At the close of the ceremony each Drum Major gave her mother our whistles to include in Julie's casket and one for the family to retain in memory of the events that transpired. It was truly an emotional event and one that I will never forget.

Julie directing Cheer Cincy after a runthrough

The Drum Major Society continually strives to support her memory! Some of our annual assets go to support her Drum Major Scholarship Fund, and many of our events are catered to the mission of eliminating breast cancer.

Later this year, our organization will be hosting a team for a local breast cancer run, and we certainly hope many of you will join us! More information will be available soon.

In closing, I just wanted to take this time to remember the REASON we exist today. The REASON this all started. We are bound to a legacy of greatness, and our members over the years have dutifully stepped up to embody the one person in UC Band history to have had the impact that Julie has had. We miss her. I miss her terribly. She was such a mentor and friend.

Julie posing! :-)

If you have any memories of Julie, or more pictures we can put online (website, Facebook, blog, etc.) please don't hesitate to send them to me at dellecave@drummajorsociety.org, or post them on our Facebook page.

Thanks for everything Julie!

From the Executive Director:

We've been alluding to "big things" coming in 2012 for quite awhile, and now has come the time to announce where we are and where we are heading.

The Drum Major Society is officially a non-profit organization as of the start of 2012!

Our Articles of Incorporation and IRS filing have been completed and approved! We are now waiting patiently on completion of the tax-exemption process so we can begin to offer tax-deduction as a benefit to supporting our Organization.

It has been a personal dream to be able to offer a compelling service to student Drum Majors for many years, and with recent unanimous action by the Board of Directors we have made that leap a reality.

Being a legal Non-Profit entity is Step #1.

Step #2 is tax-exemption approval. This will take some time. In the interim we are supporting the students as best we can, and are always looking for new ways to gain more support.

Effective February 1st on our website, you have the option on our "Donate" page to give as little as a $1 (non tax deductible at this time) to give a little support to our ongoing operations while we wait for tax-exemption approval. While we would love everyone to offer $50 or more, any amount you can give in its entirety goes to the students and their functions within the band program. Our all-volunteer organization relies entirely on the generosity and support of friends and fans to fund basic Drum Major needs.

To make the process simple, we have partnered with Google Checkout, Square, and MailChimp to be able to offer professional monetary collection features to our members and friends. These free services really helped make our plans even more realistic, and have offered a simple format for anyone to support us monetarily, or communicate with you more professionally.

These outstanding services allow groups like ours to flourish in tough times.

While any amount is helpful, we urge you to consider supporting The Drum Major Society at whatever amount you can support (non tax deductible at this time) and help us bridge the gap between now and when tax-exemption is finalized.

Further announcements will be made over the next few months, and we hope to be able to count you as part of the team!

TUCBIDG!

P.S. "Like" us on Facebook!
As we officially start the winter quarter here at the University of Cincinnati, we have also officially started the 2012 Drum Major Training Program sponsored by the Drum Major Society. Since we have restructured our board of directors, there is no longer an official director position dedicated towards organizing the training program; however, its overall responsibility belongs to our Operations Director.

This year’s program organization has primarily been handled by a small subcommittee of the board and many of its workshops and sessions are being instructed by various board members, directors, and guests. In additions to instruction, all candidates of the program are receiving a copy of the Drum Major Handbook and full access to online resources listed in our training members’ site. The added variety of instructing styles and the availability of resources to candidates have so far been of great advantage.

The program kicked off on January 11th with our first conducting workshop and the second was held just this past Wednesday. Through the coming weeks, workshops on intermediate conducting, field commanding, score analysis, and advanced conducting will be offered to candidates as resources for their preparation in trying out for the Drum Major position this spring.

This year’s class of candidates is comprised of 17 individuals, including returning Drum Majors and Drum Majors in Training. So far the group has exhibited a strong desire to work in refining their conducting technique and they show promise of some real improvement over the next several weeks. Despite whichever candidates are ultimately chosen for the position, the program is certainly a worthwhile investment of time and the society is excited to be hosting its third official year of drum major training.

As we move through the upcoming training program and tryouts, we will be sure to keep you all posted on the status of everyone involved. Immediately following that rehearsal, we loaded up all five buses, and hit the road for Memphis, TN to cheer on our Bearcats at their first bowl game since the Sugar Bowl two years back.

Before the game even started on Saturday (New Year’s Eve), there were plenty of events leading up to the big game. Thankfully that also involved some downtime for the band to enjoy the area. Our buses rolled into Memphis around 6:00pm on Thursday night and we had the evening to ourselves. On Friday morning we were up early for the “official” last rehearsal of the season at a nearby football field. With temps in the 60s, nobody was complaining about the weather. Later that same day we had TWO big performances. The Beale Street Parade was the first. At 3pm, we let the opening of the parade while Vanderbilt’s marching band took up the duty of closing it. Since we began the parade, we were able to make our way back to the parade entrance to see Vandy’s band before they set off. Ben, Mike, and I were also able to meet both of their saber-carrying Drum Majors during that short break.

Not long after we rocked Beale Street, we set up for a Battle of the Bands. The format was actually very cool outside of all the dead time between the parade and band showdown. Both bands lined up at either end of Beale Street and started marching towards each other at 5pm. We ended up meeting in the center, facing off. We approached them chanting Down-the-Drive which really got our fans pumped up. The “battle” soon relocated to an amphitheater in Handy Park just off the street. We set up both bands on either side of the stage and began to trade songs after some initial rallying words from the coaches and MC. At the end of the rally, the battle was claimed to be a “tie”. I would have to respectfully disagree since the last band standing seemed to clearly be ours. It certainly was a great way to get the crowds excited about the game.

That night was very enjoyable as the band got to hang out on Beale Street until later that night when the buses picked us up. UC Fans were everywhere! The live music and food was exceptional in each of the establishments we visited, and the occasional Down-the-Drive cheer could be heard by fans getting excited about the upcoming game. Personally, I felt the atmosphere was even more enjoyable than New Orleans. It was a bit smaller, but it was also a little less crowded and more laid back.

Throughout the week, the hospitality of the Liberty Bowl organizers and local Memphis police was great. We were escorted by cops with C-Paws on their helmets who gladly shut down the expressway for us several times. The hotel was very generous in offering us space for a New Year’s Party in their dining area after the game. Even before the game started, we were fed well by the bowl organizers. I can testify that the BBQ in Memphis is quite good.

Game day was perfect as the Bearcats took home a solid victory under the leadership of its coaches and captains. Coupled with that victory was the band’s own victory. We pulled together two of our best shows of the year. Pre-game looked and sounded great as we performed American Overture and Johnny B. Goode. Our half time was even better as we performed our traditional pre-game show. This was exactly what the crowd needed at this point in the game and the energy was explosive as they chanted with us throughout the performances. This was by far one of our best pre-game performances in the time I’ve been with the band. I couldn’t have been more proud to call that my last marching band performance. After the game, we dismissed and packed up shop. Job well done Cats.

After a bit of celebrating for the New Year that night, we got some rest for the trip home and arrived back in Cincy the next day around 8pm. The trip was perfect and everyone had a great time. This band is certainly proud of their football team, and it has plenty of reason to have pride in itself for such a great final performance of the year.

TUCBIDG!

Corey

Being a Drum Major for two years in high school pushed me to try here at UC because I knew how much I loved being in that type of a position and how much I love being a part of this band. As Associate Drum Major I have learned more than I ever imagined I would. It is very different from being ‘in training’ and from being a full Drum Major in front of the band. It is a whole new atmosphere, a new flavor of Drum Major.

I started off the season in the summer, training right along with the Drum Majors, learning everything they learned, the show pieces, the commands, conducting, planning, marching, it was just as if I was a full Drum Major. I even got to teach commands to the rookies as a Drum Major on Rookie Day. As the Associate Drum Major I feel like I am always ‘on deck’. Ready and able to step in and function as a full Drum Major at any time, while at the same time I march and play on the field. I get to see both sides. I take part in everything the Drum Majors do to prepare for rehearsals, conducting, and leading the band, then on the field I can see how it takes effect from the inside of the band. This experience, I think, is one of the best learning experiences possible for a few reasons. First is that I can report directly back to the Drum Majors with the reaction or ‘field view’ from being mingled in with all the other members. I can see things that the Drum Majors may not see from where they stand. I am more observant of specific conducting techniques and can give observations from the ‘field view’, I can report back with the types of things that confuse the band and the types that work. All of this only helps the corps in finding more efficient ways of leading the band. I’m like the inside man (well, woman) in disguise on the field getting info for the other guys.

Being in this position, yet still marching on the field also made me a go-to type for general members of the band. Knowing that I was affiliated with the Drum Majors, band members would ask me all sorts of questions that they might normally want to ask a Drum Major. I think it is very beneficial for both the band and the Drum Majors to have this type of person on the field. Many band members have questions or need help on the field either with drill or specific instructions and many times the Drum Majors are at or needed in the front of the band. I think it is very beneficial to have this in between person, a Drum Major on the field to act as a resource when the Drum Majors are busy on the sideline or the podiums.

Overall, this season has been a tremendous learning experience for me. I have seen things from all sides and feel that I am better equipped then ever with the knowledge I have gained and the observations I have made. I firmly believe that the experience one gains from being in this position will enable them to be a better Drum Major than any other type of training or practice. This is the real deal without actually stepping up on the podium (most of the time), which is an extremely beneficial type of learning.

One of the best opportunities I had while in this role was stepping up as ‘the 4th Drum Major’ and being able to conduct in front of the band at a performance in Nippert. That day I truly played two roles. For pre-game I was dressed in my red uniform, clarinet in hand, marching and playing as a general band member and section leader. Then, before half time, I changed coats. As I pulled on and zipped up the white Drum Major uniform I thought of Julie, and of the honor that comes with being able to put this jacket on. When I came back to the field I was a Drum Major! It was probably the most exhilarating experience I have had as Associate Drum Major. After all the training and preparation, I was finally able to be up in front of the band. I stood on the podium on the sideline of Nippert Stadium, in a white jacket, and conducted the band. Stepping into that role for even that short period of time was like a whole new wind blew through me. It was an honor. It. Was. Awesome.

From the field, I can say that this has been quite an exciting season. From band camp, learning drill and music, rehearsals, games at Nippert, Paul Brown, and Pittsburgh, 3D glasses, and the general excitement that comes with being in with the band for every game, this season has been one of the most exciting yet. I was excited to play so many different types of music. I am also very glad to be a part of this last show we did when we received the best crowd response in years and the roaring of the fans as we marched and played toward to student section. That is definitely a show to remember. I cannot believe how fast this quarter went by. I think back to my first sectional with the rookie clarinets, teaching them horn flashes and playing the fight song over and over again. It’s hard to believe how far we’ve come. And what a better way to top of the season then to have Doc dressed as Mickey Mouse as he conducted Frosty the Snow Man for the encore of our Marching Band Concert? And better yet, we will be spending new years in Memphis for the Liberty Bowl! I don’t know what else to say besides that this season was truly amazing.

I want to congratulate all the seniors, especially our Head DM, Corey; we wish only the best for you!

As we approach the end of our fifth year in existence, the Board of the Drum Major Society felt that it would be appropriate to give to the members and the general public a report of sorts regarding the activities of our organization.

First, this has been a tremendous year in terms of our growth. I don't mean in the number of members, but rather in how our group has developed. In the last year we have expanded our Executive Board to seven from our previous five.

Nick Dellecave - Executive Director

Rob Jaques - Operations Director

John Stueve - Finance Director

Andrew Reynolds - Communications Director

Corey Knapke - Current Head Drum Major & Director At-Large

New Additions:

Dr. Jody Besse - Director At-Large

Brandon Yocum - Director At-Large

This body represents the core administrative center of the Drum Major Society. Congratulations to our newest member, Jody and Brandon.

I also wanted to take some time to recap the DMS Reunion. This past Saturday December 3, we hosted our Fifth Annual Drum Major Society Reunion at Mecklenburg Gardens. Let me first thank the fine folks at Mecklenburg Gardens for their tremendous hospitality and accommodations. We were able to use the entire upper floor of the restaurant and the service was quick and polite. We had 30 people in attendance, including current Drum Majors, the Directing Staff, Bob, BJ, and Michael Benken, the Presidents of Upsilon (KKY) and Band Council, Foundation Representative Christa Flueck, and numerous others.

Aside from the food (which was delicious), we inducted additional honorary members. These individuals have shown unyielding dedication to the UC Band, the Drum Majors in particular, and the Society. Upon unanimous vote of the Board, we are proud to announce the newest honorary members:

David Martin

Jody Besse

In addition, the board decided that in order to properly recognize the honorary members, they ought to possess some symbol of the Drum Majors that they so fully support. In this spirit, we presented to all honorary members (all of whom were present) a silver whistle with a white lanyard. It is our hope that this token can be taken to show the appreciation the Drum Majors and the Society have for their dedication.

A new awarded, the MVP Award, was also created this year by Mr. DelleCave to allow the Executive Director the opportunity to recognize those Society Members who during the fall season have proven themselves to have gone above and beyond the call of duty. This year's recipient was Laura Pinzone. Following a fall season where she took on the role of Associate Drum Major (a new position this year), Laura has worked tirelessly to serve as a general band member, a section leader, an on-field Drum Major, and an all around leader in the band. The Society thanks her for her service.

Finally, this past year was really our first push at true fundraising. Through a combination of dues and donations, we were able to exceed our fundraising goals. These funds are helping to offset administrative and operations costs. As we look to the future, we have some lofty goals for fundraising so that we can continue to provide support for the UC Drum Majors in as many capacities as possible.

Not only did the Bearcats clinch a share of the Big East Championship, but the Drum Major Society had a reunion where 40 people came to reunite with old friends and memories. It was great to see so many faces come back for a dinner and a few short words. Seeing the Benkens, Drum Majors from many years past, current and past directors, and current Drum Majors was truly a great experience. Yea, awards (old and new) and recognition was given to many people at the reunion, but I think the awards are smaller than what was actually taking place during the reunion. It was not just everyone talking about one person, or one particular piece of being a Drum Major. The reunion was people coming together, talking about their lives, and wrapping that around something everyone in the room has come to love one way or another. It is always an honor to be associated with such a great bunch of people, and to know that so many people gave up time to get together is icing on the cake.

Seeing every honorary member of the Drum Major Society in one room was incredible. It is truly great they could be recognized and welcomed into this organization. I personally found it very awesome to see the Benken family in attendance. To know that their love and passion for their daughter has translated into the success of an organization is humbling. It goes to show that with love and the right intentions, anything can happen. To be able to be in the room of the family who this young organization has been dedicated to is an eye opening experience. It makes the purpose of the Drum Major Society real. It really does make one think about something bigger than just themselves. Ultimately, it gives me that much more respect and honor whenever I get to put on the white marching uniform. To know so many people have the immeasurable passion about the band and the art a Drum Major has to master makes me very proud to say I am a member of the Drum Major Society.

As I was sitting in a chair at Mecklenburg Gardens, I sat there and thought about what a wild year it has been. Remembering the email with the announcement of the leadership positions, reading my name, and calling my family members about 20 minutes before my English 209 class was about to begin. Fast forward to summer where I was on the "Drum Major Education Fast Track' Program where I had to help plan, backup plan, and learn everything a Drum Major needed to know before stepping in front of a new set of Rookies and the rest of the veteran band members. I will never forget the first time I got to conduct Cheer Cincinnati on the back podium during a rehearsal of pregame the evening of Rookie Day with tears in my eyes and the most intense down beats I could muster. What a crazy few months! It all led up to my first pregame performance as a Drum Major when our Head Drum Major, Corey, called me down from my spot on the 14th step of Nippert Stadium for another “Good Luck Tap” and congratulated me of making it through the first week of camp. He told me to suck it all in and to remember this moment. It was truly an awesome experience. An entire season of doing this? I must be dreaming… There will always be memories of my ‘firsts’ as a Drum Major. My first time directing Army Fanfare at a game, my first halftime performance, my first Down the Drive, my first Sigma Sigma Concert, my first time I put a headset on, my first time wearing a black uniform, and my first time as a feature twirler!…I could go on for hours with a story for each of these moments and so many others not mentioned.

The season was awesome. We hit music from almost every genre, style, and time period. Talk about a versatile band! Swing, Rock n’ Roll, Top 40…what more could a band kid want? Challenging drill? We had that too! If something needed to be done, the band was there. Even when we were called into a pop-up gig or parade, the band always responded with enough to fill the requirement and more. This band is one of the most flexible bands in the country, and we are always DAMN good at doing that. Competing at a BOA competition, performing on Heinz Field, Nippert Stadium, and Paul Brown Stadium, and playing at small events/athletic events around campus is something not many other college bands do. Usually colleges have other bands do that while the main one focuses on the football field. Yea, I would say The UC Band is DAMN Good!

I congratulate everyone on a great fall season. Seniors, you guys are awesome for sticking it out for so long even with so many tough classes, choices, and other things that had to be made and completed in order for your continuation in band. It takes a great deal of commitment to continue with band for so long, and I commend you for your dedication. The best part, we all get an encore! I hope every single one of you is in Memphis for New Year’s Eve to watch us perform one more time in 2011. It will not be a show that disappoints.

Dreams do come true.

TUCBIDG!

Ben

Thank you.

This past Saturday was my final Nippert home game (as it was for many other band seniors). I think for those of us who have been around the band for an extended amount of time, Saturday was a big game… and not just because it was a fight for a portion of the Big East Championship title. It was the close of an important chapter… and a meaningful one. For many members in the band, it may have been difficult to understand what that game meant for us graduating seniors, but just give it a few years… When you’re finally down there for the last time (and it will come soon) it will be big for you too. Words cannot describe it; it must simply be experienced.

The day was perfect, and with the best weather of the season, by far. Between the team winning the game and the band putting forth its most audience-enlivening performance of the year, it was an excellent day. The band performed a triple-sided show and the crowd responded from all three directions. I was very happy to be in the midst of that excitement for my last home game performance.

For me personally, this day was the culmination of nine years of combined marching band. I’m hardly finished (with an upcoming bowl game and other spring activities on the way), but at an official and traditional capacity, this was THE game. Everything had meaning… Catwalk, Inspection, Sigma Sigma, Down the Drive, Good Luck Taps, Pre-game, Half-time, the Alma Mater, Dismissal. So many components of what make this such a tradition filled band... They all were a bit heavier on Saturday. I thought back three years as I stood on the wall to conduct the fanfare. Was it really three years ago that I did this for the first time? I remember just how nervous I was at that time. I will admit here that nothing can top that first game experience conducting the fanfare on the wall; although this final game came pretty close.

There are a number of memories at UC that will stay with me for a while. Saturday will be one of those memories. Moments like those make the UC experience what it really is and should be. It is hardly ever solely about the class work or the degree. It is about being a member of a larger community and experiencing that community with your peers. Whether they are through the band, an athletic team, an academic team, the dance team, student government, or some other group… these are the experiences that make UC a great college university.

After the game, my fellow DMs and DMiTs attended the Drum Major Society Reunion at Mecklenburg Gardens. It was a wonderful event, and Mecklenburg’s did a grand job accommodating. Here I was able to interact with past DMs and other members of the society who truly understand what I just described above. The event was a “class act” and I tip my hat to executive director, Nick DelleCave, and operations director, Rob Jaques, for putting together such an event. The event opened with some remarks from Nick DelleCave and the director of bands, Dr. Terren Frenz. Shortly after, we were able to recognize some of our past honorary members with official shingles and whistles. Associate Drum Major, Laura Pinzone was then honored with the first ever DMS MVP award. Following this, I was given the opportunity to say a few remarks regarding my final game experience as exiting DM of the UC Band. I was honored to stand before such an audience of dedicated Bearcats. I had reason to be thankful for every person in that room and the contribution each of them made towards making the band program a better one.

So to all, I say again, thank you. I am blessed to have been a part of something so meaningful, and I look forward to the remainder of the academic year where more is yet to come. A Reunion to celebrate is scheduled for later tonight...more on that to come! I thought I'd take a few moments to reflect with everyone how wonderful this journey has been so far, and how bright the future looks for the organization!

Nearly 5 years ago we lost a true bandsmen, and one whose memory is still recalled by this old guy. Julie Benken's zest for all things UC Band truly made her something larger than life. Many stories of Julie and I's friendship is just hilarious including my first ever drink at the hotel bar for the Motor City Bowl...oh the memories.

5 years later I can say that her influence has led to a fully funded scholarship in her name for Drum Majors, an entire organization dedicated to her memory and for the recognition of those that hold the position, and has generated an ever growing group of fine young men and women who represent the very best we have to offer as a band and institution.

When I decided to found the Society in 2007 after her death, I never imagined so many great students and friends would be so supportive in being a part of something so impossible (it seemed at the time) and would further dedicate the necessary time and energy to truly make an impact on a place as large as UC. Well we have those people. We have achieved those things. And I am truly fortunate to have the fine men and women supporting this idea and making the Society and integral part of the band function in Cincinnati.

Our goals and purposes are lofty, and we are only just now beginning to realize our intentions from all those years ago, but with an executive team as capable and dedicated as we have today, I can't imagine what I'll be able to sit here and type 5 years from now.

Nonetheless, today is truly a cause for celebration, one born of an inspiring story, and a ton of luck. I encourage everyone to look at the Founding portion of our History in the History section of the website. From such humble beginning to a full support organization of the band, and MANY more wonderful things in the works, I can't say how proud I am of our mission, our members, and the tradition that represents what the Drum Major at the university is all about.

My sincere thanks to all students, staff, family, and friends that have assisted in making this wonderful journey possible so far, and here's to the many wonderful memories to come!

TUCBIDG!
I just wanted to put out a quick post with happenings as we near the end of our fall marching season. Unfortunately, our loss to West Virginia last weekend was a tough blow, but we’ll hopefully be rebounding soon with hopes of an additional winter break trip (somewhere south and orange in color would be preferable). That would put the band at TWO remaining football performances. UConn is our last home game on December the 3rd in Nippert, so come down to cheer on the Cats at the season finale! We will be performing four familiar pieces, and all sides of the stadium will get some action, so be prepared for a good show.

Obviously, as we near winter, the weather begins to cool off and rehearsals become a little less comfortable. One great event this week was the band’s first chance at rehearsing inside the “bubble”. The UC football training complex has rested next to our band room for about a year now, but thanks to some help from our athletic department we were able to finally put it to some musical use. In addition to that, UC’s new athletic director, Whit Babcock, paid us a visit last night before we began warm-ups. He had nothing but complimentary things to say, and the band really appreciated his visit and remarks. His future support of the band program and its relationship to athletics will be a great benefit for the growth and achievement of our collaborative goals… namely promoting UC, its spirit, and the general university community.

Finally, winter months also mean basketball games. We have had five games in the past seven days, so we’re keeping busy. From the DM Corps, we are in the process of training. Ben made his debut conducting performance on Wednesday, and as the season progresses, our Drum Majors in Training will also see some conducting opportunities. Both the men’s and women’s teams are looking strong, so it should be a good season.

Whether we see you at a football game or a basketball game, we do hope you make it out to see the band before we hit winter break. The band will also have its fall concert in Corbett Auditorium on December 8th at 7:30pm. We will showcase our fall show pieces, fight songs, and cadences at this final concert of the year. We extend a warm invitation to anyone who would like to attend.

Stay warm folks!

Corey

The Bearcat Marching Band hit the road to support the Bearcats in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on November 5th 2011. The band arrived at 9AM ready for the five hour bus ride, equipped with snacks and movies of all sorts. Our first stop was about 30 miles up 71 at a rest stop to switch out bus #2. We weren’t quite sure why we had to switch buses, but the bench in the very back of the bus was missing, so that may have been part of it. It was like a Chinese fire drill from one bus to the next and then we were back on the road!

Upon arriving at Heinz Field (yes, Heinz like the Ketchup) we met the Pittsburgh band for their pre-game concert. We intermingled our sections with theirs and played Bad Romance together for the first time for the crowd to enjoy. This game was Band Day for Pittsburgh, so we were also accompanied by a handful of high school bands.

Our pre-game show consisted of a modified Cheer Cincy as we marched onto the field in our three-step spacing block. We then joined the Pittsburgh band in playing the National Anthem, which, luckily for us, was in the same key as our version.

We also were able to witness the Pittsburgh Bands entrance for their pre-game performance. The drum line had a short debut as they got their fans pumped for the game. The rest of the band then entered from the side tunnels at the corners of the end zone in a high-step jog onto the field. As I watched I was thinking, ‘Man, that’s pretty cool’, and then I thought about what they might think if they were to witness us charging down the stadium steps into Nippert. That’s really cool.

For the half time performance, the UC Band started off with an outstanding performance of American Overture. After we marched off the field, the Pittsburgh performed ‘Edge of Glory’, after which we returned to the field to join them and the high school bands in the performance of ‘Bad Romance’. It was a solid, and very strong (and long) performance from all the bands.

Overall, the pre-game and half time performances were a great success. The UC Band performed well, and the Pittsburgh Band was a very gracious host. One member explained to me that they had not had a full band come to a game in over five years, and so it was very excited to have the entire UC Band visiting them.

Talk about a heart-pumping game, this one was sure to raise your blood pressure. The game was probably one of the most exciting so far this season. We kept up pretty well for the first half, but at the third quarter the Bearcats were down 23-13. UC recovered the ball after Pitt lost it on their fourth down, and from there the Bearcats scored a field goal and another touch down to tie it up by the end of the third quarter. The Bearcat fans were on their feet, cheering like mad for our team. Being in the stands myself, I can tell you that the excitement was completely off the hook! I don’t think I’ve ever been more into a football game then I was that night. The fans and band combined made a load roar for the Cats as we fought to the finish. A 41-yard field goal brought the Bearcats into the lead 23-26! The Cats held their ground as the Panthers tried to fight their way back into the game. We all watched in anticipation as they set up for a field goal that would tie the game and send us into overtime. Ben raised his arms to signal the band to ‘Get loud!’ The Panthers missed the field goal and the UC fans erupted in excitement! A trip well worth the drive, the Bearcats won! The team ran over to where we were sitting in the stands to celebrate the victory. Two of our players were lifted up on to the shoulders of some fans as we played the fight song.

This game also served as a great experience in teamwork for the Drum Majors. The band was seated in a long, narrow section of the stands, with the brass and woodwinds separated by a walkway as the stands got higher. Before the game, as Corey was warming up the band, we realized that this set-up was not going to work very well. With the percussion being so far away, and sight being limited, a tear was created between the front and back of the band. The drum majors came up with a solution that ended up working quite well, and looked pretty cool too. One Drum Major was placed in the front of the band as usual, another on the side of the band at the split between woodwinds and brass, and the third at the top of the stands in front of the percussion. The three Drum Majors created a triangle through the band. The DM in the front of the band called the songs and started the band; from there he and the middle DM mirrored the one in the back as he drove the percussion. I looked up at the guys as they communicated across the band, I could tell they were working hard to keep the band together, and it really worked! If this wasn’t an effort of complete teamwork and communication, I don’t know what was. They kept the band together and all three were kept busy throughout the game.

After we played the Alma Mater, we returned to the buses for the long drive home through the night. As we left the stadium, I shook the hand of the Pittsburgh Drum Major as he thanked us for coming and wished us a safe drive home. We arrived back in Cincinnati around 4AM Sunday morning (that’s including the time change), but the trip was well worth it.

With a win under our belts and a bowl game more than likely in the future, I’m sure everyone was glad to climb into bed that morning. Sleep tight Bearcats, another long bus ride is sure to come!

The winning field goal kick – as the guys watch in anticipation…

-Laura

It was quite a long day, but definitely a day well worth it!

With the inclement weather giving us limited field time on Thursday rehearsal before the show, the band reported at 11:30 to make up for the lost time. Running through our halftime and pregame shows were great tune-ups for the band for what was looking to be a great day to show off what we have worked countless hours to make into a show. With rehearsal finished, it was time to head to Mason!

The drive to Mason was pretty painless, and moving into our first rotation of the day was smooth as well. We marched into the high school parking lot to rehearse the music of our first performance. There we warmed up, played the Full Ensemble Warmup, and ran through the songs we were going to play for our first performance of the day. One of the small problems we had was the lack of podiums for our warm-ups; this made seeing the Drum Major a little difficult. In a quick improvisation, Ben jumped onto a portable stadium lighting fixture to be able so the band could see him for the warm-up. Our first show fell in between all the competing bands’ first performances and the results of the regional. The band performed the halftime show with what has to be one of our best performances of the season so far! …not to mention, the Drum Majors were looking a little different as well! The Drum Majors donned, for the first time EVER, their NEW black uniforms for this exhibition performance. It definitely brought some attention and a special little extra spirit to the performance.

Once our spectacular performance was finished, we moved onto taking pictures. Here we took a full band photo (formal AND informal), individual photos, and sectional photos. The Drum Majors got a fantastic picture with Dr. Frenz in their snazzy black uniforms!

After a short rest and some food, it was time to make our way back to the stadium to watch some of the performances for the final competition. While sitting in the stands, we had the privilege of listening to a select group of UC trumpets play a beautiful rendition of the Star Spangled Banner( THANK YOU MATT ANKLAN!), and we got to see some really interesting shows! Every show received a standing ovation which was a great gesture shown by the band and everyone else in the stands. After watching a few shows, the band headed back to the buses to get ready for the second performance rotation for the night.

Marching back to our familiar warm-up spot in the high school parking lot, we warmed up for the final time and played American Overture possibly a little bit too loudly for the competition going on right on the other side of the school. Either way, it was pretty obvious the band was ready to do what it came here to do--- perform!

Our final performance for the day (which was around 10pm) was our traditional pregame show along with American Overture added to the end. From my perspective, this performance was by far the best performance we have had for both Pre-Game and American Overture this year! The band really stepped it up when it counted the most!

With the end of our last performance, we marched back into that familiar parking lot, once again. From there we waited for everyone to get back from what they were doing whether it be loading the equipment truck to finishing cadences for all the high school bands to march onto to the field to for Final Results. Once everyone was back, we dismissed from a very impressive day of performing.

The BOA competition was interesting for much of the band because it was a lot of the members’ first time watching an actual band competition. It is always interesting to see something new, especially when that “something new” is a different understanding of what you though you actually knew almost everything about.

The Bands of America Competition in Mason, Ohio was a great way for the band to recruit and to perform in front of people who really appreciated the hard work and sacrifice a band puts into a 10 minute show. The day was a complete success!

This was ESPN's debut of their new ESPN 3D channel and service so the game was actually broadcast in its entirety in 3D...along with standard broadcast. In classic UC Band fashion we were ready for them with weapons of our own:

That's right! The entire band was equipped with old-school 3D glasses! It was a rather hilarious suggestion by Asst. Director Dr. Besse, but several students ran with it, and funded by Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma, the band was able to wear them at the game (it even enhanced uniform code in 3D!!!!)

Several announcers on TV mentioned it, but sadly I haven't been able to find any clips of us being on TV with the glasses!

Even the Directors got in on the fun! And let me tell you...there is nothing more hilarious than old men with 3D glasses on...LOL:

We are all crazy! :-)

Finally before some general shots of our DM's I wanted to take this chance to mention that our Associate Drum Major, Laura Pinzone got her white jacket debut at halftime for the fans. She was MORE than excited to step into the role!

Here are some other shots from the game:
Stay tuned for more!

A few beverages were had, and several lunch specials were consumed. QUITE good I might add! The Directors decided to pay us a visit which always up the antics! Oh Doc...

We also got a sneak peek of the room for the Society Reunion later this year! But nope...there will be no pics of that...you'll have to wait for your invitation to get to see it! :-)

This year we were able to secure a mutual sponsorship with Mecklenburg Gardens. Through that partnership, we have decided to make their restaurant our official Postgame Party spot!

The food is absolutely fantastic, and the drinks are aplenty!

For our first outing we had several guests as well as current Drum Majors present for the event! There were 13 in all, and that made for one heck of a night!

Hope to see everyone out at our next function!
Which supposedly means it's football season too, but we all know band is the real reason we're all here! After finishing up an amazing week of band camp round 1, we were all pumped for the first game of the season and performing our annual band day halftime with high school bands from around the area. Six hours before kick-off, band day got off to a hot start in summer's last hoorah. In the record-breaking 97 degree heat, the high school and UC bands ran through this year's music for the first time, preparing for what was to be an excellent performance later that evening. It was even so hot that the UC Band decided to forgo the full uniform and opt for a cooler option in our brand new polos! Although we did our best to make sure the bands stayed hydrated, the severity of the heat still sent some dedicated band members to the sidelines.

In recent years, the UC Band has played for the football team's arrival, formally known at the Catwalk just outside of the university's alumni center. This year, to accommodate for a growing number of fans, the Catwalk moved to the center of Campus Green where the band energized the team with a few rounds of the fight songs. Next on the schedule was the UC Band tradition we all know as pre-game inspection, which coincidentally shifted locations to accommodate for our growing numbers as well! After making sure everybody was in tip-top shape, the band paraded to Sigma Sigma Commons for our pre-game concert where UC fans and the high school bands alike got to hear the band for the first time this season!

Immediately following the Sigma Sigma concert, it was finally game time and time for the UC Band to perform its signature cadence, Down the Drive into the stadium. As usual, UC fans joined in the cheer as the band passed by, encouraging UC pride and spirit. Once inside the stadium, the familiar call to be "on the rail at 22" echoed throughout the stadium and the band was dismissed to line up for its first pre-game performance of the year! As tradition states, band members give each other "good luck taps" before the famed "charge down the stadium" steps. Meanwhile, the drum line took their position on the field and grooved to the music on the loud speaker.

Finally, it was time for the charge! After performing pregame, the band waited in its tunnel formation for the team to take the field.

The game started off with a bang, not referencing the fireworks, with the Bearcats scoring a touchdown on their first drive. The band performed another of its traditions to wear our hats backwards during the fight song after the game is over. The guard and twirlers took the field with the cheerleaders and dance team to participate as the band played the Alma Mater. After exiting the stadium, the band lined up on the wall outside of Sheakley Lawn for an official dismissal, the final of the band's traditions.

What a great day for the UC Bearcat Bands, and of course the football team as well! Although I have been in Germany for the last quarter of band this year (spring), I know that the performance and tradition have continued to progress as strong as ever up until the very last week of the year. Special initiatives by the band council, the TUCBIDG 2020 team, band ensembles, alumni organizations, and support groups have all been successfully started, implemented, or carried through to completion. The band has also hosted a number of performances and concerts I hope you have all been able to attend. Remember, you can always access these dates through the band calendar located HERE.

With the close of a year comes the beginning of a new one. This also means newly elected officers and appointed leaders. I would like to first thank those leaders who served this past year for their great efforts and contributions. Sometimes these efforts are overlooked, but they ultimately do impact the quality and performance of our band program. Thank you for what you do. Students, staff, and ESPECIALLY volunteers.

On behalf of the DMS, I would like to congratulate Raven Bryant for the completion of her tenure in the UC Band program and her past year of service as drum major. I would also like to thank the rest of the DMS executive team for their continued support and efforts. Specifically, Nick DelleCave has continued to play a large role in the organization of the group as the executive chair and John Stueve has really stepped up to take the lead as our training chair. John was able to lead a very successful DMT initiative this past year.

Together, Mike, Raven, and myself learned much throughout the season. As a corps we had rough spots, but I would be lying if I didn't say we had a lot of fun along the way too. I personally learned much more as a returning drum major this past year than I ever thought I would.

Now I would like to officially congratulate our newly appointed drum major corps! Mike Stott and myself will return as senior drum majors next year. Newly appointed, soon to be third-year trumpet player, Ben Lozar, will complete the three man team. Congratulations, Ben! Also exciting is that we will have an official "drum major in training" this upcoming year. Congratulations to soon to be third-year clarinet player, Laura Pinzone, on being selected for this position! She will be shadowing the DM corps throughout the year and assisting in various DM responsibilities.

Summer brings with it a short break for the band, but leadership kicks things off early with planning, practicing, and preparation for new rookies, camp, and another big season. In August we will host our annual leadership camp to rally the leadership team, and then after some preliminary auxiliary camps (color guard, twirlers, percussion, etc.), we will kick off the 2011-2012 season in the final week of August. Our first football game is August 3rd against Austin Peay, so mark it in your calendars!

To all, I wish you a very safe and enjoyable summer!
TUCBIDG

Corey

With an increase in musical proficiency and growing motivation within the band to perform, we were able to pull it off. The band concert was very enjoyable with two complete bands performing three or four pieces each. We look forward to hosting another set of band and jazz concerts at the end of spring quarter.

In the world of the Drum Major Society, informal training sessions have been underway for several weeks now. John Stueve, our education chair, has taken the role of main instructor for introducing all interested DM candidates to basic conducting technique and field commanding. A good group of 10 to 15 band members will likely be trying out for the position this spring. More updates will be posted as the spring quarter gets underway. In that line-up of future events, we anticipate the spring football game (Bearcat Bowl), the band’s formal end-of-year banquet, Continued Band Leadership Clinic, and formal drum major tryouts. Lots to look forward too! Until then, we’re just wrapping up exam week and everyone will have a chance to take a small breather over spring break.

So, as they say, the band marches on!

Until later… TUCBIDG!

Corey It’s usually at this time that exams begin coming up, homework loads increase, and the amount of time one is truly able to give up for band comes at a premium. This triggered a thought or two about what a college marching band really is. Between the staff and student leaders, we deal with one major enemy: TIME. In college, it is hard to find it. It’s really hard to find it for 250 students. In fact, I think it is interesting that 95% of our band members have majors other than music. While we all attempt to become doctors, lawyers, educators, and engineers, we’re still at our drill charts and flip-folders perfecting a show. Now the big question: Why?

It’s really interesting what music can do to a person. It’s even more interesting what music can do to a group of people. Brothers of Kappa Kappa Psi and sisters of Tau Beta Sigma would especially agree… what music, marching, and band trips do are bring people together. The best part (and most important part) is that the bus doesn’t stop there! A college marching band is unique because it is a driving mechanism… I would call it an engine… of university spirit. Why dawn the red and black? Why gently sway arm and arm to the alma mater? Because it represents nearly 200 years of history! It represents our fathers and grandfathers before us. It represents the freedoms of this country! We play the Star Spangled Banner at nearly every event we perform. Universities and colleges exist because of a freedom fought for not long ago. We can pursue higher education because of that freedom. But I digress… In a college marching band, we represent the university, its students, its mission, and its honor. When a freshman gets goose-bumps after hearing the alma mater for the very first time, it’s because we were there to play it! What a privilege to be a part of a program that can have such a powerful affect on people! What an incredible thing. To hear the roar of a crowd during pregame or to see an entire stadium throw their arms together in unison to Down the Drive… to hear unified voices and cheers… they are held together by the music of a college marching band. Too cool…

I am a proud Bearcat fan. When our football, basketball, volleyball, soccer, baseball, (insert your favorite UC sport here) does well, I’m proud. We in the band are extremely proud… “you do your best boys, we’ll do the rest boys, onward to victory!”

So when I begin to feel the wear of a season, and time keeps rearing its head, I need to realize that it’s worth that dedication because of what wearing that uniform really means. I would say TUCBIDG, but I think a better message may be to all college (and even high school) marching bands… you’re damn good, and you had better feel good about that.

Soon we’ll see students arriving back at the University and the hustle and bustle of campus life will reignite. The combination of a band, football, and students is the only true way to begin a new academic year… not to mention make Nippert a dangerous place for visiting competitors!

On Tuesday of this week, the UC Bearcat Bands had its official first day of band camp. That day, known as Rookie Day, was the official welcome to over 100 new UC Bearcat band members!!That puts our entire band number at approximately 250 members. Last year we had 205. My first year (07-08), we had only 180 total members! That is incredible growth! It has posed a number of challenges in terms of space, resources, and time, but these are all good challenges to have. They push us to strive for still higher goals and musical aspirations.

In the past two days, we have set two shows. High school band day is our first game of the year as the Bearcats face Indiana State. Of course, we will be charging the stadium before the game; pregame is the best it has looked pre-season in my tenure here. Half time will consist of a patriotic salute to honor those men and women who sacrificed on September 11, 2001. It will also serve as a time to remember those who were lost. We will perform America the Beautiful,Amazing Grace, and Stouthearted Men. With over 1000 band members on the field (college and high school), it should be a great performance.

Next week, we begin our second week of camp at Higher Ground in Indiana. Here we will lay the ground work for our first large-production show of the year. More information to come on that later…

In the arena of drum majors, we are fortunate to have two new faces leading the band. Miss Raven Bryant, Mr. Michael Stott, and I will be the 2010-2011 drum majors of the UC Band. After several weeks of preseason summer work, the newest DMs have taken quickly to the demands of the position and we are on target for some real progress this year. Assistance through the DMS has aided greatly in the start of this progress.

<img style="display:block; Both the band and the DMS are experiencing some new and exciting areas of growth. The first step for enlightenment on these is to check out our new websites! Nick has described the DMS facelift and we extend thanks for the hard work on that! We also acknowledge our UC Band Webmasters for their HOURS of work on the new band website. I dare you to find another college band website that looks as professional or as sharp as ours.

Stay posted, and we’ll see you on the turf!

As we prepare for a new season full of fun and crazy happenings from the DM Team, I took the liberty of redesigning the DMS website to better reflect the times, and to be in line with the new UC Band website redesign. This very Blog has also been redesigned to better match the theme of the new site.

We encourage you all to continue to keep up to date with what's going on from the podium!

Enjoy!
