<h style="font-size:40px">Swervocity</h> here at The Drunken Unicorn on Saturday, February, 25th, 2012.

Atlanta based twin brothers who have played together for over a decade form the core of this band. These two have been associated with a number of bands (Right Side of the Tree, Alter Ego, Gucci Mane, Waka Flocka, One Chance, JKap, ArnHao, Gran Trizz) and have performed all over Atlanta and the southeast. They formed Swervocity to reconnect to their rock roots and push the boundaries on what they love.

The Boxing Lesson is a group of psychedelic progressive rock musicians based in Austin, TX. Currently a power trio with synthesizers performing the bass players role, they create a layered sound that usually starts minimally and builds into grand orchestrations. The band consists of songwriter Paul Waclawsky, synthesizer player Jaylinn Davidson and drummer Matt Bongirno.
<h style="font-size:40px">The Hotels</h> will be starting the show.

The Hotels formed in late 2005, in the now-infamous concrete studios in northeast Atlanta. James Watson became the driving force behind the songwriting and recording projects credited to the Hotels and maintained that roll for the better parts of 2005-2011. After several different lineups and no other permanent members other than Watson during the six run, middle 2011 saw a group of musicians come together to form the Hotels for both live and recording purposes. Joe Oliver (of Good Moods and Highlander fame), Chandler Kelley and Rush Myers (both of Goldilocks fame) joined Watson in the Hotels. Both Oliver and Kelley have not only played in the Hotels previously, but both with production credits of Hotels albums to their names.
Formed in May, 2009, the Armory have quickly made a name for themselves throughout the Southeast. They have built a solid fan base over the last two years by touring rigorously through the southern states, as well as the East Coast and Mid-West. The Armory has also been a part of the Vans Warped Tour in 2010 and Ichthus and Cornerstone Festivals in 2011.
"The Romans are a four piece indie rock band hailing from Atlanta GA whose music combines elements of dark new wave, 80's pop, and alternative music. Lush atmospheric soundscapes engulf haunted vocals all serving as a backdrop for philosophical lyrics dealing with loss, self realization, melancholy, brokeness and infinite joy. This ability to move effortlessly from dark to light and loud to soft within a set or on an album is what sets them apart from other bands within their genre."
Chu’s latest album, The Human Condition (Feb. 2012), features the single “Dear John,” a personal appeal addressing the role of men who fuel demand for sex trafficking. “I really wanted to communicate my heart on the issue to bring the buyers, and men, into the forefront.”

The Human Condition will be released at the Drunken Unicorn on February 23, 2012 in Atlanta as part of the END DEMAND Benefit Concert, which will raise funds to aid A Future. Not A Past. and Street GRACE in their efforts to fight human trafficking at the local level. Details can be found on Street GRACE’s website.

The Good Graces was formed in early 2007 when I picked up a $90 guitar from Atlanta’s late great Lakewood Antiques Market and started fiddling around with some simple chords and melodies. It wasn’t long before those simple chords and melodies turned into catchy, heartfelt indiepop tunes. Having been through a tumultous divorce just three years prior, I guess failed relationships were on my mind. So I began exploring themes of heartache and hope, while both relecting on the past and looking forward to a happy future. The songs came very easily for me, so much that many of them seemed to write themselves.
I know what you are saying, "What is so original about another bluesy rock band?", well this is whats so original about it, they take the heart of blues, the power of rock, the "sweet" of indie, and the rebellion of alternative and cram it all into their originals like "Buster the Bullfrog" and "Place we can Go".

<h style="font-size:40px">Scale The Summit</h> here at The Drunken Unicorn on Friday, February 17th, 2012.

Scale the Summit’s influences aren’t the obvious named you’d expect – The band reveres the technicality of Dream Theater and Cynic – but at the same time, Letchford feels the band has taken strides toward developing it’s own identity. “Our music is very organic-sounding. Since we started riding music, we’ve had people talking about how our music takes them on a journey, so we decided to call it “Adventure Metal” It felt better than just calling it “Progressive Metal.”

“After a seemingly endless pile of crappy hardcore and deathcore bands, I was completely overjoyed when I finally found these guys. They play technical-melodic metal and they sound like what I imagine you might get if Veil Of Maya and Misery Signals had a baby. That’s a very good thing.” - Heavy Blog Is Heavy

Capillaries is an instrumental band of four from Atlanta, GA. The music of Capillaries captures a dark history and remains willing to stay behind and investigate it. There are hints of ambience with a sense of immediacy driving it along. Noise and melody become unintended bedfellows. Bass-driven leads and non-traditional rhythms become the substratum for soaring guitars that take listeners to new heights just before pummeling them back into the earth.
Tragedy Called Truth. Who Are They? Are they a group that you forget at the end of the night? Or a group whose name will last throughout the ages? Well, If you ask the band, their only reply would be: “There are No minute men here.” Tragedy Called Truth, or T.C.T. has been kicking butt and taking names for a while now and does not intend to stop there. “We are here to change the scene”. They have declared.
They are a combination of blistering rock and southern soul. This tight six-piece, fiery ensemble has been playing the Orlando original music circuit for the last three years and have quickly garnered local celebrity press status and fan buzz.
Parker Smith and the Bandwith landed their first gig in September 2010 and fans immediately took a liking to their unique sound. Musical influences range from Taj Mahal to Talking Heads, but the band members attempt to steer clear of staying put in one genre. They stress their passion about playing ‘real music’ (no computers allowed on stage), and fans appreciate the originality and roots-oriented sound. As one fan put it, “The groovy songs get your feet thumping and the slower songs reel you in giving you a chance to feel something, more than what can be said of many local acts these days.” Storytelling lyrics and wise tales accompany timeless melodies and unique arrangements with their 6-piece instrumentation.
Sailing to Denver is a band, comprised of veteran musicians from the deep South who simply want to sing their favorite songs together. To help distract us all from the bad news on T.V., they appear regularly around the Atlanta area harmonizing timeless choruses, and playing rhythmic strings that echo through the concrete maze, brightening, and bringing joy unto the road-raged. From songs easily recognized, and universally adored, to the obscure classics that everyone feels they somehow already know, this eclectic group's catalog contains about every known genre, but always with a hint of country and the south. HELP KEEP THEM HERE! By enjoying their music together, maybe we can all do our part to stop them from Sailing To Denver.
"Dreamy but never droney, Prague-rockers Ocean Versus Daughter are really good at the achingly beautiful thing. Things tend to start simply and starkly, maybe just the American-born Flanna Sheridan's snow-angelic voice, some strings, a little piano. But as the melody expands and the sound adrenalizes with riffs and beats, pretty new sonic worlds open up. Smart stuff to sway to." --Philadelphia City Paper, June 2011

“Inspired by the soul of the South and the spirit of gypsies, Lily and the Tigers play what they call gothic americana music. The band's foundation rests in the words, voice and guitar of Casey Hood and the restless beats of upright bassist Adam Mincey. The two call Atlanta, Georgia home and the musicians around town family. Their debut album, Sojourner, pulls in several other tigers. From trumpets and accordions to harpsichords and harmonicas, every song tells a different story. Post-punk that's sexy and furious. Rock and roll that's sad and joyous. Pop music that's strange but familiar.

An explosion of echoing guitars, tight powerful rhythms, and floating high pitched vocals match dark earthly colored skinny's and broad-cut scoop neck shirts under flannel to create the intimate yet chaotic sounds of Heyrocco. Three very close acquaintances formed a bond of music, style, and creativity and have been spreading their ideas with the green world ever since. Their music has the raw effect of an indie rock band, but is also laced with beauty; every track balancing the power and precision of a symphony.

The Last Relapse is a band hailing from Atlanta, GA. They released their first full length CD "Machine" in July of 2010. You could describe the music as lyric driven Ambient/Rock with heavenly vocal and guitar effects and busy complementary bass lines held together by clever complicated drum beats. Columbia City Paper described their music this way: "Indie Rock with an ethereal, dream pop sound. Maybe if Modest Mouse smoked a bunch of opium it would sound similar?"
“To say Lazer/Wulf is on point is an understatement—the band functioned as one cohesive entity, blasting through complex riffs and melting the faces off anyone within earshot. It was as if the high-speed funk-rock thrash had literally enraptured the entire audience and pulled each individual forward on an invisible string. With each song, the intensity grew and even the most jaded and pretentious of audience members could not help but drop their jaws, if only momentarily. The brief silence following the set was an appropriate response to the performance. When the universe aligns and a band pulls off that kind of flawless and crisp congruity, there are really no words.” Carrie Dagenhard / Flagpole Magazine
"Sleepy Genes are a five-piece rock band from Atlanta, GA. Since the first time I saw them earlier this year, I was convinced they were one of the best bands I have seen live. I can only describe their live show as an adrenaline rush. Sleepy Genes take you on a roller coaster ride of sound and it is pretty thrilling. All the elements are there to make for an entertaining show; from each member taking turns wailing on the drums or cymbals, to classic guitar solos, and loud chants that encourage the crowd to sing along. Star Bar was packed making it one of Sleepy Genes biggest shows this year and they held everyone's attention. When I say they win the crowd over at every performance I'm not exaggerating. See this band live! Get a taste of what their shows are like by checking out my video below. Look out for more shows and tunes from Sleepy Genes in the new year!" - The Promising Chord

“Rock” and “Indie” are two of the most ambiguous terms in music classification; however, until you take a listen to Radio the Captain’s music or check out one of their shows to draw your own conclusions, then “Rock” and “Indie” will have to do. Radio the Captain has been writing music since the summer of 2010. Comprised of former members of the heavy rock band After the Fray, guitarist Logan Boyd and bassist/vocalist Dustin Taylor sought a new musical direction, one that still incorporated raw emotion and energy yet instead of double bass blasts and heavy breakdowns they wanted more guitar delays and melodic driven bass riffs. The halls of Georgia State University provided the two with a drummer as Logan found Jeff Hawkins via a flyer Jeff had posted about his desire to connect with other musicians. Completing the lineup with drums and bringing his lyrical ideas to the table, Radio the Captain had the material and pieces they needed to get started.

We are a five-piece band from Augusta, GA that simply love music. Our sound is compared to early Radiohead, Mutemath, and Muse. We play on blending vocals, ambient guitars, hard hitting loops, classic keys, and good old rock n' roll drumming.
<h style="font-size:40px">Divine Isis</h> "Scream" release show here at The Drunken Unicorn on Saturday, January 21st, 2012.

The ladies of Divine Isis met as members of a larger all female rock band. Over time the chemistry between the three became apparent and they decided to form something new, something that would not easily fit into any one genre. Eliza, a classically trained musician, brings complex piano driven arrangements that are rich with dynamics. Lace comes from a hard rock background that alternates melodic and distorted guitar. Angel’s steady drum beats and Geoff Goodwin’s thumpin bass guitar (added late 2011) provide a strong and unique rhythm section. Eliza and Lace have both fronted bands previously and their voices also compliment one another. Eliza’s rich and sexy alto blends easily with Lace’s higher, soulful range, giving them the freedom to evoke any mood or meaning they please. The music has evolved into powerful female driven rock. Whether they are righting wrongs (“You are not my savior, you are not even a hero”) or crafting a steamy tribute that is the female answer to The Lemon Song (“You’re staring at my lips, my hips… Can you still feel me on the tip of your tongue?”), these ladies will move you…

Divine Isis on Facebook

<h style="font-size:40px">Pocket The Moon</h> will be the second performer of the evening.

"A distinctive and gifted duo consisting of Sara Crawford and Geoff Goodwin, Pocket the Moon and their new self-titled LP demonstrate imagination and brilliance and undoubtedly justify their achievement of the 2011“Best New Local Act” title from the Creative Loafing Best of Atlanta survey. An indie two-piece with folksy and electronic flavor, Pocket the Moon delivers a striking instrumental and vocal delight with a slightly dark and somber aesthetic.

“Sleepwalking”, a heavy-eyed track with warm piano and tight drum recordings introduces the listener to Sara’s haunting and moving vocals as she chants “It was only a dreammmmm”.
With its novel combination of instrumentals and electro elements, “Rooftops” delivers the fragility and harmony of an Azure Ray hit—especially with the elusive vocals of Sara Crawford.
“Falling” has an electro tinge and exhibits a refreshing darkness and edginess—the perfect song for driving home from downtown at 4 am. This song almost has a shoe gaze-like appeal—to the point where one might be convinced it came straight off of a Sneaker Pimps album.

“Hipster Haircut”, a more indie/folksy track provides a change of pace with refreshingly clever lyrics. “I hate your trendy hipster hair. Did you get that to impress the anorexic painter so you can stay out late with her on the futon that you stole from me?” Employing unique features such as the xylophone and trumpet, “Peters Lament” provides a folksy, sing-a-long ballad, with the staple subject of lost love." - Claire Morgan / The Blue Indian
<h style="font-size:40px">Sofia Talvik</h> will be the opener.

We all know the Swedes can write a mean pop songs - but what about folk songs? Well, one artist is nonchalantly transferring the charm and fun found in most pop songs into sweet, acoustic twang. Sofia Talvik, brings bubbly blonde ambition to this raw and often quiet genre with a captivating breath of fresh air.

Sofia Talvik is the next rising star from Sweden.
She has emerged like a lady of the forest, bringing a new interesting side to folk music. Where other artists surrender to the mainstream, Sofia makes her own paths through the musical underbrush of today.
"First looking at this group on stage at Star Bar, specifically their leading lady Nadia, it seemed impossible for this to be a loud band. That is a completely wrong assumption, and who doesn’t know the adage about those who assume? We talked to Curio Museum about their emotional sound, their new album CD (yes, that’s the name) and where did all the yelling come from.

When it comes to the band as a whole, because you guys are a musically diverse group of people, what will you say your influences are?

It’s like the biggest difference between us. We all have our own influences, but we mesh very well and bring something different to the table. We don’t have a certain band we try to model. It’s like a really weird overlap on our ven-diagram of musical influences and interests, but it is a small center." - Starletta Watson / Examiner
An exciting new project based out of Atlanta, Barrel House has been generating buzz since it began initial practices and writing sessions last fall. Current members collectively boast several record deals via past projects with prestigious indie labels and majors including Sony and Capitol. Drawing comparisons to a number of talented artists ranging from The White Stripes and Kings of Leon to Radiohead and Jimmi Hendrix, Barrel House is poised to make a huge impact on the Southeastern scene.
Founding Heavy Mojo member Simon Stone steps out on a solo mission with Dj / Producer Mr Jonzon. After rocking stages worldwide Simon Stone comes with a full solo CD that shows lyrical skill as well as packs the dance floor. "Future Shock" (With nods to both Herbie Hancock and Curtis Mayfield) brings every point of alternative hip hop to the front. The straight ahead funk of "If We Could Only Be Real (Violynn)", mellow groove of "Go Touch" and the first promo single / video "Fingers Triggers, which explores the danger of gun use. The CD was produced entirely by Philly Producer Mr Jonzon. Simon Stone " I might make the beat, but he produced it. There is a difference" Mixing the hard core hip hop drums with airy keys and funk borders on trip hip and dancefloor exercises that will make the head nod. Also featured on backing female vocal duties is Roxx Nya Head, who's light seductive vocal tone adds life to many tracks.
Very fresh to the Atlanta music scene is Calm White Noise. The band began to take life in the early months of 2011. Band leader and creator, Dylan Banks, gathered three of the best musicians in the Atlanta area (Ricky Taft, Bill Walker, Andre Griffin) to help turn his visions and ideas into a full functioning entity of marvelous sound waves. Calm White Noise played their first show in Athens, Ga at New Earth Music Hall in April, 2011; since then they have played a few local shows in Atlanta, Ga, but looking to play a lot more in the future. This group brings a unique style to the rising local music scene, pulling influences from rock, experimental, indie, and electronic to create a truly unique sound of their own.
In a small corner of San Diego, brothers Andy & James Ralph drives melodies through the air sharp as nails; while plugged into buzzing amps in a space cluttered with a dozen instruments and tangled cords. Beneath wooden rafters and a blanket of sound, an unpolished throat sings gritty, spit-shined, and endearingly clumsy where the sadness of its voice is somehow tender. It is a voice reaching for something familiar, inspired by physical experience, influential friends, loss, and objects that leave a residue of longing.
Akron/Family are one of those exasperatingly unknowable bands. They've concocted an image, all right -- check out their MySpace page or the Young God Records one, and you will quickly be advised that they are "extremely nice, sincere and well-mannered young men from rural America who came to New York City in 2002 to make music." But other than that and the occasional unfounded rumor that they practice a made-up cultish religion called AK (pronounced "ack"), the only way to know these apparently affable twenty-something fellows -- the original lineup consisting of vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Seth Olinsky, from Williamsport, PA; vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Miles Seaton, from Porterville, CA; vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Dana Janssen, from Williamsport, PA; and lead vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Ryan Vanderhoof, from Union Springs, NY -- is through their music, which falls squarely into the freak folk category launched, in the minds of the popular culture anyway, single-handedly by Devendra Banhart.
Siberia My Sweet adds post-punk sprinkles to new wave architecture, creating a sound steeped in opposites, as the name implies. Reviews have wrought comparisons to bands like Blondie, Duran Duran and Metric. Vocalist Kelly Andrews has been described as having “…a voice that carries a tune with the likes of Shirley Manson of Garbage and Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs" (Be Atlanta).

"Side By Side's starts off with the soaring pop-rock song, "My Heart." Kittrell's rhythmic vocals are clearly the focus, with a tone similar to Natalie Merchant. "Smile" has a harder edge to the music, though more of a radio-friendly, anthemic pop style, as well. The lyrics read more like diary entries, often tackling the universal theme of love and loss. There's a fine line between poetic and sappy ... Kittrell's delivery helps rescue it from being in the latter category. The band wraps up the EP with its strongest track on the album, the emotional, piano-driven "To the Sky."" - Jeff Hahne / Creative Loafing Charlotte
Soylent Red is a rock band from Atlanta, Georgia that plays a soulful blend of rock, alternative, and blues. Their music came about organically and on its own, and now they would like to share it with fellow music lovers. They are not limited to one style or genre, giving their songs variety and dynamics. Their original music features alternating wailing and crunching guitar, hypnotic, driving bass, and a powerful explosion of drums and cymbals. They also mix in clean, melodic guitar, funk, and thoughtful lyrics, taking the listener on a roller coaster ride of music from the soul.
"I believe the music industry is completely flooded with bands that fit a niche, but I have something new for you. "Waking the Bates" are an up and coming band based out of Atlanta that is sure to leave you in awe. The five piece bluesy extravaganza is composed of Will Strange (rhythm guitar/vocals), Nick Bach (vocals/guitar/mandolin/piano), Dougy "Phresh" (drums), Kevin Brittelle (bass), and Nick Bell(lead guitar). The "Bates" have blended alternative, blues, and rock all into one melting pot to come out with there own original style of music. They also put their spin on classic covers like "Come Together" (The Beatles), "Can't Always Get What you Want" (Rolling Stones), and "Creep" (Radiohead). Not only do they give justice to these great songs but they put a certain flare on them that will make you think, "Why didn't they do that when they wrote the song?" For all those people who like to pride themselves on seeing new music first, do not miss the opportunity to see "Waking The Bates."" - Alex P
