Caltech’s baseball team played a doubleheader against Pacifica on Saturday. In the first game, Pacifica won 5-0, but in the second game, Caltech beat them 9-7. Well, what’s so relevant about that?

Caltech’s win snapped a 10-year, 228-game losing streak. They were actually down 7-4 in the sixth inning but somehow rallied to a win.

The last time Caltech won a baseball game was on January 15, 2003 against Cal State Monterey Bay. Holy. Cow.

Here’s what first-year coach Matt Mark said after their game against Pacifica:

“We talked all week about ways to win. They amazed me. It’s my second game as the head coach and I got my first win out of the way early. There was never a question when I would get the first one. I’ve spent most of (Saturday night) answering emails, texts, phone calls from an outpouring by the community and the alumni.”

I had no idea it was possible for a team to lose 228 consecutive games. Obviously it somehow is. But to be honest, even after their win, I think Caltech will go out there and have another big losing streak – one that doesn’t necessarily last 228 games.

For the first time since 1996 and the second time in four decades, there weren’t any baseball players that were selected for induction into the Hall of Fame, says the Chicago Tribune.

Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, and Roger Clemens faced a jury Wednesday, and the jury decided that they weren’t worthy enough to be in the Hall of Fame. The reasoning behind that is pretty obvious – all three have had their careers tainted by steroid use. With that, no one reached the required 75% of the vote to be selected for induction.

Vote totals were as follows:

Craig Biggio 388 (68.2%), Jack Morris 385 (67.7%), Jeff Bagwell 339 (59.6%), Mike Piazza 329 (57.8%), Tim Raines 297 (52.2%), Lee Smith 272 (47.8%), Curt Schilling 221 (38.8%), Roger Clemens 214 (37.6%), Barry Bonds 206 (36.2%), Edgar Martinez 204 (35.9%), Alan Trammell 191 (33.6%), Larry Walker 123 (21.6%), Fred McGriff 118 (20.7%), Dale Murphy 106 (18.6%), Mark McGwire 96 (16.9%), Don Mattingly 75 (13.2%), Sammy Sosa 71 (12.5%), Rafael Palmeiro 50 (8.8%), Bernie Williams 19 (3.3%), Kenny Lofton 18 (3.2%), Sandy Alomar Jr. 16 (2.8%), Julio Franco 6 (1.1%), David Wells 5 (0.9%), Steve Finley 4 (0.7%), Shawn Green 2 (0.4%), Aaron Sele 1 (0.2%), Jeff Cirillo 0, Royce Clayton 0, Jeff Conine 0, Roberto Hernandez 0, Ryan Klesko 0, Jose Mesa 0, Reggie Sanders 0, Mike Stanton 0, Todd Walker 0, Rondell White 0, Woody Williams 0.

Bud Selig released the following statement about BBWAA not electing anyone to the Hall of Fame:

“Major League Baseball recognizes that election to the Hall of Fame is our game’s most extraordinary individual honor. Achieving enshrinement in Cooperstown is difficult, as it should be, and there have been seven other years when no one was elected by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. While this year did not produce an electee, there are many worthy candidates who will merit consideration in the future. We respect both the longstanding process that the Hall of Fame has in place and the role of the BBWAA, whose members have voted in the Hall of Fame’s elections since 1936.”

Roger Clemens wasn’t shocked that he didn’t get elected into the Hall (and neither am I). Here’s a tweet of an image with his message in it:

Edwin Jackson and the Cubs have agreed to a four-year contract worth $52 million. Jackson was most recently with the Nationals – in 31 starts with the club last season, he went 10-11 with a 4.03 ERA.

The Cubs will be the eighth team that Jackson has been a part of since his major league career started with the Dodgers back in 2003. Since then, Jackson has accumulated a 70-71 record and a 4.40 ERA.

R.A. Dickey has agreed to a contract extension with the Blue Jays, which means that he will be traded from the Mets to the Jays, sources tell ESPN.

The extension lasts two years and is worth $25 million. Dickey will have to pass a physical in order for the trade to officially complete, but he most likely will, so that means we’ll be seeing him in a Blue Jays uniform next season.

In exchange for trading Dickey, the Mets will receive Travis d’Arnaurd, a great prospect at catcher, as well as Noah Syndergaard, a right-handed Class A pitcher. The two teams will also swap catchers – Josh Thole is heading to the Blue Jays and John Buck is heading to the Mets. Other prospects will also be included in the trade.

Toronto will include cash in the trade to “lessen the Mets’ responsibility for Buck’s $6 million salary.”
