Israeli Embassy and DepEd Commemorate International Holocaust Remembrance Day

The Embassy of Israel in the Philippines collaborated with the Department of Education for the annual commemoration of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, with this year’s theme: Home and Belonging.

Israeli Ambassador to the Philippines Ilan Fluss thanked the Vice President of the Republic of the Philippines and Secretary of the Department of Education Hon. Sara Duterte and her team who organized the event and made the 27^th of January a formal day of commemorating the holocaust in all DepEd schools and facilities.

“The Holocaust is the darkest time in human history – especially for the Jewish people. It was an unprecedented event from 1942 to 1945 when Nazi Germany attempted to annihilate the Jewish people. Six million Jews – one third of the Jewish population – were murdered for the sole reason that they were Jewish,” Ambassador Fluss explained. “Today we are witnessing voices of denial of the holocaust and increasing antisemitism. This cannot be ignored; we can never let it happen again. We must remember, learn, teach, educate, and say - never again.”

The Ambassador also remembered the act of former president of the Philippines Manuel Quezon of opening the country’s doors to over 1,300 Jewish refugees fleeing the Nazi regime in 1939. “Pres. Quezon saved not only those individuals, but also their future families.”

The International Holocaust Remembrance Day is the day that the United Nations urges every member state to honor the victims of the Holocaust. It marks the anniversary of the day in 1945 when the main extermination camp Auschwitz-Birkenau – where more than a million Jews were exterminated – was liberated by the allies.

The ceremony was held on the 26^th of January at Bulwagan ng Karunungan, DepEd Complex in Pasig City. In attendance were officials and staff from the Embassy of Israel, Department of Education, representatives from the Department of Foreign Affairs, and members of the Jewish community in the Philippines.

Sunrises for the Soul book launched in SM Lanang Premiere

More than its visual elegance, there is so much more to the magic of sunrise that touches the innermost feelings of each and every person who is able to witness its majesty. The hope that comes with the start of each day where a million possibilities can happen is enough to excite the soul.

As such, two artists in their respective fields have tried to capture in photos and in words just that—hope in the form of a coffee table book titled “Quarantine Reflections: A photographic journey of Kublai Millan reflected in words by Stella Estremera”.

“Most of the photos were taken in my various projects around Mindanao,” Millan shared, who added that they were taken using his Huawei Mate 30 Pro. “Though my favorite sunrise spot is above my farm house in Malagos.”

The self-published book was launched during the art exhibit “Huawei X Kublai Sunrises for the Soul” recently at The Atrium of SM Lanang Premiere with no less than former President Rodrigo Duterte, Senator Bong Go, and Honeylet Avancena in attendance.

“If I look at your work of art, if I really absorb what your art wants to express, it tells me that your paintings brings us to beauty and dearer to God,” former President Duterte said during his speech.

The event also saw Millan reading the poem “An Ode to Digong”, which was written by Estremera. The artist and the writer have been friends for two decades and have collaborated on many different projects, including Mindanao Art Fair, which will be on its fourth year this October.

Millan himself has been writing prose and poetry even during his younger years. But he admits he has not had time to write in recent years as the prolific artist continues to work on his visual masterpieces whether paintings or larger-than-life sculptures with Estremera’s words engraved on them.

The coffee table book, which is available via the Facebook page KublaiArt, contains 13 poems by Millan and 11 haikus and 15 poems by Estremera. “Ours is a process most writers will hate—to be criticized,” Estremera said regarding her working relationship with Millan. “My poetry and writings with Kublai goes back and forth between us until we achieve a harmony between our thoughts and emotions.”

Nayong Pilipino spotlights linguistic diversity as essence of Filipino Culture

The Nayong Pilipino Foundation (NPF) underscored the need to preserve local languages, emphasizing the importance of diversity to our sense of nation through a roundtable discussion entitled “Umpukan sa Nayon: Wikang Nagbubuklod” held on August 12, 2022, at the IVC Teatro in Fort Santiago, Intramuros, Manila.

During her opening remarks, NPF Executive Director Gertie Duran-Batocabe reiterated that the history of every language reflects not only the history of the people but the most important stages of its cultural development as well as its importance in shaping national identity.

“Bilang isang kaugnay na ahensiya ng Department of Tourism na namumuno sa pagtataguyod ng kultura at pamana, nais ng Nayong Pilipino na magtangan ng Umpukan sa Nayon upang talakayin ang magkakaibang leksikon ng mga rehiyon sa Pilipinas. Sapagkat bahagi po ng kultura ang wika. Ang wika bilang kultura ay kolektibong kaban ng karanasan ng tao sa tiyak na lugar at panahon ng kaniyang kasaysayan,” she said.

Among the resource speakers during the roundtable discussion were University of the Philippines (UP) Professors Jesus Federico “Tuting” Hernandez and John Carlo Santos, UP Researcher and Editor Christine Marie Lim Magpile, and Gemma Arella-Suguitan of the Southern Luzon Association of Museums. The discussion was moderated by Roy Rene Cagalingan, Senior Language Researcher of Komisyon ng Wikang Pilipino (KWF).

During the discussions, Researcher and Editor Christine Marie Lim Magpile encouraged Gen Z and young millennial writers to use the Filipino language that fits the audience and matches the purpose.

“Binibigyang-diin ko sa mga nag-uumpisang manunulat na maging partikular sa paggamit ng wika. Ang wika ay hindi lang pang-akademiko, ang wika ay paraan ng komunikasyon. Mahalaga ang wika dahil hindi natin napapahayag ang damdamin ng isang tauhan, kung mali ang paggamit ng wika,” she said.

Gemma Arella-Suguitan saw the diversity of languages as an opportunity to learn more things from other cultures.

“Marami tayong lengguwahe at ito ay nagbibigay sa atin ng oportunidad para lagi tayong gutom sa kaalaman. Dahil marami tayong salita, hindi maiwasan na nagkakaroon ng sharing. Laging nadadagdagan ang ating vocabulary ng ating mga kababayan. Kung kaya’t maganda rin na iba-ba ang ating salita,” said Arella-Suguitan.

Professor Jesus Federico “Tuting” Hernandez supports the call for the government to provide the Filipino translation of records.

“Dapat matagal na nating ginawa ito, yung mga batas, lalo na sa mga major institution ng pamahalaan. Ang mga public document must be translated to Filipino, para mas nauunawan,” he said. Meanwhile, John Carlo Santos stressed that the public should use the Filipino languages in their day-to-day lives. “Sino ang nagwawagi pag pinagsasampal natin yung mga wika sa Pilipinas? Lagi kapag pinagtatalo ang iba’t ibang wika sa Pilipinas, banyagang wika (English) ang nanaig. At hindi tayo papayag ‘dun kasi ang pagkakaroon ng sariling wika ay nilalabanan natin ang kolonyal na mentalidad. Ang wika ay ‘di para lang magkaintindihan ang mga tao, ang wika ay hindi para lang ipahayag ng diwa, ang Filipino bilang wika ay nakabatay sa lahat ng mga wika sa Pilipinas,” he said.

He also reminded the youth that English is not a measure of intelligence or success.

"Buhayin nating ang diskurso, dahil ang silbi ng wika ay paglilingkod. Nag-aaral tayo para maglingkod sa kapwa natin Pilipino kaya dapat ang inaaral natin ang wikang Filipino. Ang silbi ng wika ay ang paglilingkod,” he added.

The NPF Umpukan sa Nayon Project is under the Heritage Space Program. It was designed as a series of multi-sectoral consultations for the development of programs for the future NPF Cultural Park and Creative Hub. Through the Umpukan sa Nayon Project, the Nayong Pilipino Foundation was able to foster multi-sectoral partnerships and expand its network.

CINEMALAYA REVIEW: BATSOY

Moviegoers, it seems, have been spoiled with big budget films and complicated stories the past few years that filmmakers almost always want to one up each other in creating something based off that formula.

But for director Ronald Espinosa Batallones, that didn’t need to be the case. After seven previous attempts, the former Medical Laboratory Scientist finally made his Cinemalaya debut with the film “Batsoy”.

Batallones was inspired in 2011 when he went home to the Philippines for a vacation and saw the film “Ang Babae sa Septic Tank”, which to this day is one of his favorites. He saw photos of the participating Cinemalaya directors and told himself that one day, his image will be included in the display. It took his eighth attempt, obstacles and naysayers included, to finally fulfill that promise.

Batallones said that perhaps “Batsoy” made it to the main competition this time because it was a story that was personal and authentic, therefore easy for him to tell. The narrative is pretty straightforward with a touch of the mystical, as viewers will discover when two siblings Toto and Nonoy go about their day selling firewood. The younger Nonoy has a craving for batsoy and as the film is set in the 1980s, it was fairly new and considered a delicacy for people in the town of San Dionisio. Batallones and his team, all 16 of them including the cast and crew, successfully remade the vibe of that era, even the currency, komiks, posters, and other products were given much importance. The language is of course in Ilonggo to add to the authenticity.

The film basically endears us not only to the young characters but it also reflects the child within all of us, who at one time or another may have experienced the same type of craving and would do what’s needed to satiate it. Or as in this case, what a kuya would do for his younger brother. It also captures the simplicity of that period, way before technology took over, when children spent their time outside, using only their imagination to pass the time.

Most of the primary cast acted for the first time but delivered what was required of them with as much sincerity as they can to the story Batallones wanted to tell.

Despite being only 66 minutes long, “Batsoy”, much like the food, gives more than enough to entertain, enlighten, and enamor viewers once more to something so simple, yet surely satisfying. “Batsoy” stars Sean Ethan Sotto, Markko Cambas, Karen Laurrie Mendoza, Nathan J. Israel builds bridges of innovation during Davao Start-Up Week

The Embassy of Israel, in partnership with the University of the Philippines (U.P.) in Mindanao and IDEAS Davao, hosted Davao-Israel Innovation Night in line with the first-ever Davao Start-Up Week. Israel is known as a Start-Up Nation, which houses over 9,000 startups.

“We are happy to share our success stories, especially with the Philippines. Filipinos are talented individuals; they find solutions despite limited resources. I believe that with stronger support for innovation and start-ups, many more can be achieved,” Israeli Deputy Chief of Mission Nir Balzam said.

Davao-based start-ups joined the event and were given an opportunity to pitch their ideas to local investors and government officials.

“We are still working on connecting more with the industry, building more engagement to have Filipino start-ups collaborate with Israeli start-ups,” Mr. Balzam added. Vice President for External Affairs of the Israel Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines Mr. Itamar Gero shared his insights on the Startup Ecosystem partnership between the Philippines and Israel.

Also in attendance at the event were Executive Director of DOST-PCIEERD Dr. Eric Paringit, Project Lead of IDEAS Davao Mr. Miguel Guillermo, representatives from government offices including the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), representatives from the local government units of Davao City, and the Chamber of Commerce.

The Embassy of Israel actively builds bridges of innovation with the Philippines by collaborating with the government and private sectors. In June 2022, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) signed an agreement with the Israel Innovation Authority for joint collaboration on innovation. The agreement will foster the formation of collaborative prospects in the field of innovation between Israel and the Philippines.

In April 2022, the Embassy hosted in Israel a Filipino delegation headed by DOST with their incubators and representatives from DTI, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to learn about the innovation ecosystem in Israel and to see what can be applied in the Philippines.

The Davao-Israel Innovation Night was held on August 11 in Acacia Hotel, Davao. The Davao-based startups who pitched during the event were Virtualahan, Artificial Intelligence Meets Human Intelligence (AIMHI), GeoPik Technologies, Aguila Software Incorporated, Coffee for Peace, Geo Pindot, Infinit LMS Solutions, DPI Virtual Tour, Sureplus, and Green Habits Agri Venture. The event was a joint effort with Israel’s Honorary Consulate in Mindanao based in Davao headed by Honorary Consul Jorge Marquez.

The Davao Start-up Week will run from the 12th to the 14th of August.

'Chronicles of a Wayfarer', book on founder of Assumption Order, launched

Five Assumption Alumnae published the "Chronicles of a Wayfarer" to recount the life of Saint Marie Eugénie de Jésus, Founder of the Assumption Order.

Mesdames Gloria Pilar Aguirre, Nanette Olivares, Frances Teves Pascual, Concepcion A Poblador and Maria Lourdes de Vera travelled in France to follow the footsteps of Sister Marie Eugénie, in a quest to know more about the foundress of their Alma Mater.

Their voyage brought them from Lorraine to Paris following the life of Anne Eugénie from her childhood to the founding of the religious order and the establishment of schools that eventually reached the Philippines. They joyfully discovered the local scenery, the heritage monuments, learning more of France’s rich history, and savoring gastronomical delights which they generously share in the book.

In line with the 75 years of French-Philippine diplomatic relations, the publication doubles as a biography and a travel guide that highlights the strong appreciation, if not assimilation, of French culture by Filipinas educated in Assumption. Saint Marie-Eugénie, in putting up the Assumption schools in the Philippines, provided education opportunities for girls in the country, giving them the necessary tools to strive and succeed in a modernizing society while equipped with the moral foundations important in a predominantly Catholic nation.

Looking forward, the Embassy of France to the Philippines, the Alliance Française de Manille and the Assumption College are strengthening ties to develop university partnerships that will promote student exchanges between France and the Philippines. French will naturally be taught and spoken by more Assumption students to prepare them for post graduate studies in the institutions of Higher learning in France.

Michelle Poonawalla recently unveiled her latest work "Reserve" at the JMS Foundation Charity Gala Dinner at The Dorchester in London and received the Shiromani Award by GP Hinduja for her contribution in the field of art at the NRI World Summit, a two-day celebration of the NRI Institution's 33rd anniversary.

The short film "Reserve" highlights water scarcity as an impending global crisis, which according to the World Economics Forum, has the potential to create a catastrophic impact on every single being on the planet. The short film shows this through poetic images of acrylic paints dissolving in water, perhaps in reference to the pollution and contamination affecting Earth's water reserves.

"Reserve" looks to increase awareness and highlight how simple it would be for humankind to make a change and take a step towards preserving the planet's most indispensable commodity. Poonawalla’s speech at the House of Lords touched upon art as a universal language and a vehicle of change that can bring people together.

Poonawalla’s artwork often explores universal themes that resonate with audiences all over the world - be it India or the UK.

“Art is one of the most valuable resources that we share universally," Michelle Poonawalla said. "It is an international language across borders, cultures, political differences and age. As an artist I like to support social and ecological causes, from the Elephant Parade in India and the UK, to the Tiger Parade in Singapore and India. Art is a powerful tool to support social causes within a community. I hope my film Reserve will bring attention to the world’s water scarcity issue. I am also deeply honoured and humbled that I have been chosen as an awardee of the prestigious Shiromani Award and to have been given the opportunity to speak at the House of Lords.”

The Shiromani Award was instituted in 1977 and has been bestowed on Mother Teresa, Chief Marshal Manekshaw, Raj Kapoor, Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Kapil Dev, PT Usha, Leander Paes, Vishwanathan Anand, The Dalai Lama, Jaya Bachchan and Asha Bhosle in the past. Czechs support 'Building Samar Back Better'

Spearheaded by Charita, Czech branch of Caritas, the scope of Czech humanitarian operations in Western Samar is being gradually enlarged from purely humanitarian aid to development assistance. Supporting the Diocesan Social Action Center of Calbayog, the Caritas Czech Republic started its operations in the municipality of Basey shortly after supertyphoon Yolanda hit Samar.

There they promptly extended efforts to rehabilitate the disaster-struck areas and to assist in the recovery of the local communities. The funding for these post-disaster rehabilitation programs in Samar came from the voluntary contributions by citizens of the Czech Republic and Romania, and by funding of the Czech Development Agency. A Czech Country Representative has overseen the projects since the beginning.

Czech Ambassador Jaroslav Olša, jr. recently traveled to Samar to visit the Czech-funded development and humanitarian projects that are currently being implemented in the province and to evaluate how Czech support over the past years has helped the island recover after the onslaught of Yolanda in 2013.

In Basey II Central Elementary School, one of the beneficiaries of the numerous projects of Caritas Czech Republic in Samar, Ambassador Olša received a plaque of appreciation as Czech Caritas was among the first — if not the first — humanitarian organizations to rebuild local schools in Basey and to continuously provide support for education in the municipality. “With majority of the local schools destroyed and after losing more than 230 of our community members in the aftermath of Yolanda, such swift response by Caritas was truly instrumental in the rebuilding of our community. For that, we are truly thankful,” Basey Mayor Igmedio Junjie Ponferrada said during a meeting with Ambassador Olša.

The joint Czech, Italian and Romanian Caritas´ humanitarian assistance to Western Samar is not limited to post-disaster rehabilitation work. With its local partner, the Diocesan Social Action Center, it has also been implementing agricultural projects supporting local farmers in barangays in municipality of Basey. Among these projects is the “Diversified and Integrated Organic Farm,” where farmers are taught to diversify their livelihood by using resilient farming systems, as well as to identify which seeds and crops are most adaptable to their local areas. The farmers are also trained in the organic way of pest control and fertilizer development. Aside from this, the Basey field-office of Caritas also provides assistance in formulating and implementation of Disaster Risk Reduction plans through village mapping and promotion of climate-resilient technologies.

After visiting Samar, Ambassador Olša noted that “more than eighteen months after Yolanda there is still so much to do in Samar. Farmers’ livelihood used to rely on few cash crops only - coconut, banana and rice. Yolanda forced locals to realize that this is not the way how to sustain their income.” It is thus not a surprise that Czech Caritas is continuing its work in the province by strengthening farmers’ knowledge in diversifying their income by various farming activities with resilient approach.

“Once farmers become more confident and the production reach appropriate volume and quality, our projects will move to the next stage; to cluster communities and help them to access the market,” says Helena Kotková, Czech Caritas Country representative, and adds: “But it is still a long way to go. In 2013, Caritas Czech committed to help the communities. We cannot leave without unfinished complex package of activities.”

Rest assured, the Czech Republic will continue to implement humanitarian and development projects in continuous support of “Building Samar Back Better. ”

UNICEF prepares for Maysak (local name Chedeng)

Super Typhoon Maysak (local name Chedeng) has entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility and is expected to make a landfall on the eastern coasts of Luzon over the weekend.

According to latest reports from PAGASA, the country’s weather bureau, Maysak has maximum sustained winds of 175 km/h and gusts of up to 210 km/h making it a Category 2 typhoon. This typhoon has slightly slowed down from its previously recorded sustained winds of 215 km/h.

Latest estimates forecast Maysak’s landfall on the eastern coasts of Aurora and Isabela provinces in the evening of 5 April (Sunday). Residences particularly in the said provinces are warned to be ready to evacuate as moderate to heavy rainfall may trigger flashfloods and landslides.

The Philippine government has also issued a warning against possible storm surges of up to four metres on the eastern coastal areas of Samar and Bicol regions, as well as in Aurora and Quezon provinces.

“UNICEF is ready to support the government with pre-positioned emergency supplies from our local warehouses in Manila, Tacloban, and Cotabato once the emergency hits. In times of disasters, children face the risk of disease outbreaks, malnutrition, violence and disrupted education. Our priority is to ensure that children and their rights and welfare are protected before and after disasters,” said Lotta Sylwander, UNICEF Philippines Representative.

UNICEF has pre-positioned essential supplies that include water kits, hygiene kits, water purification units, school tents, student and teacher materials, child friendly space tents, medical supplies, nutritional therapeutic food items to combat malnutrition, oral rehydration saults, tarpaulins and generators enough for at least 10,000 families.

UNICEF has staff on standby ready to be deployed in rapid assessments as soon as it is safe to travel. UNICEF, with the Philippine government, co-leads the joint response in the areas of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), Nutrition and Child Protection.

IHOP restaurant’s National Pancake Day tradition began in 1995 and it will be marking its first decade by adding to the nearly $16 million it has raised for charities to help the local community. The Philippines’ first, foremost and longest-running gathering of aviators and aviation enthusiasts from around the globe is back for another Weekend of Everything That Flies.

This year’s Philippine International Hot Air Balloon Festival (PIHABF) is set on February 12 to 15 at the Philippine Air Force ADAC Hangar in Clark Freeport Zone in Pampanga.

Earlier this year, a memorandum of agreement to hold the annual balloon fiesta was signed by Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) president Arnel Casanova, Clark Development Corporation (CDC) president Arthur Tugade, Clark International Airport Corporation (CIAC) president, (then) chief executive officer Victor Jose Luciano, and Philippine International Hot Air Balloon Foundation Inc. (PIHABF) president Capt. Joy Roa at the Asian Air Safari hangar in Pasay City.

Four full days of flying activities—including hot air ballooning, aerobatic exhibitions, skydiving, powered paragliding, aviation formation, search and rescue flight demonstrations, and balloon bursting, among other aviation spectacles—await attendees and participants to the highly anticipated event.

This year’s highlights include a total of 32 hot air balloons participating from all over the world, with special-shaped balloons featuring Old MacDonald’s Farm, Maximus the Beagle Dog, Burnie the Little Devil, Upside Down Balloon, Miss Daisy, Old Lady & the Shoe, Little Girl and Little Boy, Pink Elephant, Octopus, and Vincent Van Gogh, among a host of colorful traditional balloons.
After the 6:00 AM balloon launch, attendees can also look forward to non-stop flying exhibitions which include skydiving, motorized paragliding, aerobatics, formation flying, radio-controlled model flights, kite-flying, and rocketry, before the balloons fly in again at 5:45 in the afternoon, weather-permitting.

Activities are not only limited skyward, as the festival grounds are also brimming with fun for the whole family. Watch car-drifting exhibitions while airplanes try to drop flour bombs overhead; catch firefighting and safety demonstrations by the Clark International Airport Corporation (CIAC); discover unique goods and food finds at the “Fly Market”; see your favorite OPM bands perform onstage courtesy of Radio Republic; for would-be aviators, visit the displays of various aviation schools; learn more about birds and other animal species at the Zoocobia mini zoo; and for lovers, attend a free Valentines Concert staged by Jeepney TV on the 3rd Fiesta night, which falls on Valentine’s Day. A fireworks display and nightglow culminates the four-day event the following evening.

Beauty for a cause

As part of this year’s activities, PIHABF also launched the search for Miss Aviation. First staged in the 1970s, this one-of-a-kind beauty pageant aims to promote, advocate and inspire the youth to take up a career in aviation, and support the country’s local tourism efforts. Twenty (20) female aviation students and professionals will vie for the title which will be awarded on February 10, 2015 during the Annual Aviator’s Ball to be held at the Manila Peninsula.

An outstanding pilot will also be receiving the Aviator of the Year Award during the Annual Aviator’s Ball which is a recognition given to aviators who have made outstanding contributions in upgrading the standards of safety and aviation interests in their regions. Other recognitions to be awarded during the event are: Fixed Wing Pilot of the Year, Helicopter Pilot of the Year, Flight Instructor of the Year, Female Pilot of the Year, CAAP Check Pilot of the Year, CAAP Controller of the Year and Aircraft Mechanic of the Year.

According to Captain Joy Roa, event director, the fiesta is a platform for improving the country’s aviation standing through collaboration and interaction with international aviators. “We have so much to learn from our foreign counterparts, and this fiesta is an opportunity to share and exchange cultures and ideas. Of course, this is also a chance for us to showcase the world renowned Filipino hospitality,” he said.

The PIHABF organizing committee is composed of volunteer aviation experts and industry practitioners who make sure that the fiesta is carefully planned and safety-oriented.

Roa added, “Despite the challenges and the setbacks, we are dogged in our determination to mount this event year after year because more than a spectacle, this is an advocacy for us. We want to educate everyone, especially the youth, about the beauty of aviation and the many life lessons we can learn from it.”

Watching the Shanghai Masters 2014 last week was definitely a personal highlight for this year.

It's no secret that I'm a huge Roger Federer fan and when I started playing in late 2006, it was him that inspired me to become better at the sport. I saw a match of his on television and this was the time he was practically winning every tournament.

I would go on and watch YouTube clips of his and would read up every article written about him.

The decision to go to this year's Shanghai Masters was something I decided late last year and so at the start of 2014, the ticket to Shanghai was already booked. I really had to see him play live and I even made a post about it here: The Plan 2014

A week after realizing that plan (DREAM COME TRUE), I'm still on a high. If you want to see the very first time I saw him in person, you might want to check out my Instagram account @fedxmatilla for the video of him making his way to the practice courts. He was just an arm's length away and I knew all the trouble of getting to that exact moment was worth it.

As someone who's passionate about tennis, I just couldn't believe it. As a photographer, I felt so fulfilled having photographed the greatest tennis player of this era.

Buttermilk Chicken goodness at Kettle Shangri-La Plaza

I've been hearing a lot of positive things about Kettle at the East Wing of the Shangri-La Plaza Mall in Ortigas. And after having a go at its Buttermilk Chicken, I would have to agree that it is indeed well worth the visit.

I don't think I need to add anything more to the praises because the Buttermilk Chicken could very well be the crowning glory of Kettle. It's crunchy, it looks good, and it has that sweet mildly spicy goodness that is hard to find in any of the run-of-the-mill fried chickens around.

The serving is quite gracious and its cornbread large and complements the chicken well. Even with my appetite, we had more than enough for take home.

But of course, I had to try out what else was available that would actually go well with this particular dish. Based off the menu description, the Truffle Gorgonzola Pasta sounded good.

And it was. Though it may look simple enough but the Gorgonzola has that strong and creamy taste that embraces the pasta perfectly.

Kettle's interior is homey enough, the seats are quite comfortable, and nothing really screams of intimidation. The servers smile often and more importantly, are always attentive.

If there's anything I didn't like about Kettle, it's that they served the coffee with sugar in packets, which for me can cheapen any dining establishment easily. It's not that big a deal really but having sugar in a bowl changes a lot.

What's certain though is that I'll be back for more Buttermilk Chicken and another pasta dish.

Kettle is at the 5th level of the East Wing of Shangri-La Plaza. It is open Monday to Sunday 11:30 am to 9:30 pm.

Enlist in the Avon Pink Walk and Run Against Breast Cancer this October 2014

Attendees were educated on the paramount importance of early detection and regular self-breast exams to combat breast cancer.

Avon Philippines President and General Manager Julie Tatarczuk served as Commander-in-Chief, who briefed the attendees on this year’s campaign and the global beauty brand’s unwavering commitment against the disease.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to stand before all of you today and invite you on Avon’s important mission,” Ms. Tatarczuk said. “This mission entails all of us to join a war. A war all of us need to be a part of because it can hurt the people we love. It is time that we fight back. It is time we provide people with the ammunition to survive the disease.”

“This year, we are waging an all-out war. We leave no woman behind. The Avon Pink WAR is proof that as the company for women, Avon will never back down from the fight against breast cancer. We encourage everyone present today to stand with us as part of the Pink Army and help us spread awareness on this disease. Through early detection and regular self-breast checks, we can win this war against breast cancer.”

KGBC ambassador Solenn Heussaff likewise taught the attendees the Dibdiban Dance, which creatively teaches how to do self-breast exams. Watch the dance in the video below:

“The dance is more than just entertainment. It’s a call to spread awareness on breast cancer. Avon wants women to be familiar with their bodies and regularly conduct self- breast exams. This is our most powerful weapon and the more women know about this, the better our chances of scoring sweet victory against the disease,” said Ms. Heussaff.

I just have to rave about the Crab Rice and the Laing Supreme here at The Red Crab.

The Crab Rice (P295) is a lot for two but more than the generous serving, I loved how it wasn't greasy in any way and the taste isn't too overpowering. It's such a good combination with the Laing Supreme and the Lechon Kawali we ordered.

The Laing Supreme (P295), which as you can see in the photo is full to the brim, is as authentic-tasting as it gets. I like my laing mildly-spicy and thick and this one is both.

Surprisingly, the most generic is the Lechon Kawali (P350). Continue reading

Deuter concept store now open at SM MOA

Deuter, a brand that has been pioneering premium outdoor equipment since its founding in 1898, has come a long way from providing the Bavarian Royal Mail with mailbags and post sacks to being used in mountaineering expeditions.

In 1938, German mountain climber Anderl Heckmair brought along a Deuter backpack when he led the first successful ascent of the North Face of the Eiger. Fifteen years later, Deuter was with Austrian mountaineer Hermann Buhl and his crew when they conquered Nanga Parbat in Pakistan, the ninth highest mountain in the world.

Italian filmmaker’s love affair with Smokey Mountain

It took a visit to Smokey Mountain in Tondo for Andrea Bosca to come to the realization that wealth did not necessarily equate to happiness.
“They are not linked!” Bosca said as if still in disbelief even after directing the short film “A Tutto Tondo,” about the friendship of an Italian lawyer and a Filipino family in Rome.

Bosca, who has declared his love for the Philippines, went to Smokey Mountain a couple of years ago to shoot a documentary. But what he received there was more than just the renowned hospitality of the Filipinos. He left the place filled with the desire to show to the rest of the world how Filipinos thrived daily amid poverty and suffering, with the smile on their faces intact.
“I was there for one afternoon and it affected me greatly,” Bosca said. “I wanted to show through the film that anyone can do anything when they have the support and love of their family or their community.”

Naga honors exemplary locals through 2014 Mayoral Awards

Nagueños who have displayed courage, good governance, heritage advocacy, or all-around excellence in their chosen fields, were honored by the City of Naga through the annual Mayoral Awards.

Held recently at the Avenue Convention Plaza in Naga, the event was attended by Mayor John G. Bongat and Vice Mayor Nelson S. Legacion. Guest speaker was engineer Honesto C. General.

The awards began in 1968, 20 years after President Elpidio Quirino signed into law House Bill No. 1225 that was sponsored by Rep. Juan Q. Miranda, declaring Naga a chartered city.

“Today, on our 66th charter anniversary, we take time to rekindle our city’s glorious past as we celebrate the gains of the present and move on to secure a brighter future,” said Mayor Bongat. “It is on this special day that we are also holding in high esteem our outstanding citizens who have done their share in making our city truly a ‘Maigmang Lugar.’ Most fittingly, these men and women will today be conferred the honors that bear our beloved heroes’ names: Miranda, Aureus, Rosales and Robredo.”

The Mayoral Awards consists of four categories.

The Juan Querubin Miranda Award is the highest and is named after the Father of the City Charter of Naga. This year’s recipient is VCA Cecilio Printing Press, which was founded in 1949 and remains one of the most important contributors to the continued blossoming of the Bicol language. Cecilio Press is recognized for its effort in nurturing the region’s culture through the publication and distribution of various literatures such as novenas, devotional materials, corridor, comedias, and prayers written in Bicol.

Aureus Award

The Leon Salem Aureus Award is the second highest and is named after the first Mayor of Naga. Aureus was tasked to govern and rehabilitate the city after World War II, serving as Commander Miranda’s executive officer.

This year, the award went to Victor Bichara and Sons, Maria Shamaine Centenera Buencamino, Josephine Robredo-Bundoc, MD, Fe Buangin Carranza, and Jeanne Frances I. Illo.

The movie business in Naga might have been different if it were not for enterprising Lebanese couple Victor Bichara and Emily Panayotti who came to the city in the 1920’. Naga was the booming capital town of Camarines Sur when the couple bought a lot and building in 1923 which became a movie theater that showed silent films. It branched out to many other towns and introduced the “talking” films to the locals in the 1930s.

Buencamino, a talented stage and film actress, has won numerous awards (Golden Screen and Asian Film Awards) for her works in indie films. Buencamino worked with the late director Marilou Diaz-Abaya on her last film “Ikaw ang Pag-ibig” (2011) about the Our Lady of Penafrancia, Principal Patroness and Queen of Bicol. She said the award was a blessing and that acting has to be truthful so it “resonates and reaches the heart of any viewer.”

A physician specializing in rehabilitation medicine for three decades, Dr. Bundoc gives her time and attention to persons with disabilities (PWDs), especially the orthopedically challenged, providing them mobility devices.

“It’s a very big honor because it exemplifies what each and everyone in the city aims to do,” said Dr. Bundoc. “This increases the awareness not only of the people of the city but of the entire country with regards to the services that will greatly assist PWDs who are the least served. If you give them opportunities, they will be able to improve their lives.”

Crippled at age three, Carranza is one of Naga’s successful micro-entrepreneurs. She and her four children put up a retail store and eventually ventured into making selling tofu, soya milk, nutrimeat and soy-based bread.

Carranza is an officer of the Naga City PWD Federation and she has initiated feeding sessions for pre-school children in different barangay.

Illo is a scholar on gender awareness and development.

Robredo Award

The Jesse Manalastas Robredo Youth Award began only last year. It is named after the late Naga mayor, interior and local government secretary and Ramon Magsaysay awardee who died in a plane crash in 2012.

The youth award in his name is given to an individual or group that displays qualities of good leadership that the dynamic and charismatic mayor was known for.

Recipients of the award this year are the Ateneo Sarong Bangui Junior Eagles, a socio-civic organization involved in shelter and sanitation, education, and environment; and Monica Mae Mendrique Montero, a young gymnast who has represented Naga in various regional, national, and international competitions, such as the 10th Singapore Gymnastics Open.

Two tricycle drivers, meanwhile, shared the Lt. Delfin C. Rosales Award. Launched this year, the award is named after a brave young soldier who plunged into a hail of bullets fired by Japanese soldiers in an effort to save a wounded comrade. This is conferred on any citizen of the city who has shown extraordinary acts of heroism, valor, and civic duty.

Alex Estanislao, father of 11 children, has more than once demonstrated his honesty and upright citizenship by returning a wallet containing cash and checks amounting to over half a million pesos last October. A few years ago, he returned an attaché case that had P35,000 and a check amounting to P1.5 million.

Also in October 2013, 25-year-old Jason Federis found a wallet in his tricycle and personally traced the owner just to return it.

There were nine recipients of the Mayoral Recognition Award: Aloysius Francis Bresnan, grand champion of the First Voice of Asia Speech Compeition; Gershon Mark Cortez, magna cum laude graduate of the Adventist University of the Philippines who placed 8th in the March 2013 Medical Technologies Licensure Examination; Jacqueline Meghann Velarde Eleazar, class valedictorian and student leader who was selected as one of the Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines-Bicol as well as the Jose Rizal Model Student of the Philippines; Maricel Chua Macaraig, a civil engineer who place 4th in the Licensure Examination for Geodetic Engineers; Lynn Zuñiga Padillo, who received the Metrobank Foundation Outstanding Teacher of the Philippines and 2013 Search for Outstanding Public Officials; Arnica Mae Remoquillo, cum laude graduate of the Universidad de Sta. Isabel who placed 9th in the Nursing Licensure Examination last June 2013; Hannah Lalaine Rosin, a young gymnast who garnered a gold and silver medals at the Prime Gymnastics International Invitational in Singapore; Timothy Tang Lee Say, a summa cum laude graduate in both his college and post-graduate studies who placed 4th in the Physician Licensure Examinations; and Cyril Amoroso-Vivo, who won first prize in the 2013 National Search for Most Outstanding Special Education Teacher for Children with Hearing Impairment.
