Undergraduate Leadership Institute

The Undergraduate Leadership Institute is a highly structured and intense leadership experience designed to increase undergraduates‘ capacity to lead in multiple contexts – in the fraternity, on campus, and/or in their communities.

As an Undergraduate Leadership Institute participant, Brothers will:

1. Learn ways to improve his chapter
2. Network and fellowship with fraternity leaders and undergraduate brothers
3. Understand and appreciate leadership styles similar to and different from his own
4. Engage in meaningful dialogue about the concept of leadership in the 21st century
5. Develop skills related to managing one‘s “brand” and career
6. Learn about career opportunities at General Electric

2012 East Central Province Council Sets its Sights on Pittsburgh

The 2012 East Central Province Council will be upon us soon. Brothers are urged to take advantage of online registration as fees will increase after April 8, 2012. For late registration, all mail-in registrations must be postmarked by the is April 8, 2012 deadline. Online late registration will remain open until Wednesday, April 18, 2012. Only onsite registration will be available after April 18, 2012.

This year’s province council will be hosted by the Pittsburgh (PA) Alumni Chapter . Events will take place from Apr. 19th to Apr. 21, at The Pittsburgh Marriott City Center.

Kappa Alpha Psi Supports “Red Tails”

On January 20th, 2012 Lucafilm with distribution from Twentieth Century Fox released a major motion
picture based on the heroics of the Tuskegee Airmen titled “RED TAILS”. The Tuskegee Airmen is the popular
name of a group of African American pilots who fought in World War II.

The Tuskegee Airmen were the first African American military aviators in the United States armed forces.
During World War II, African Americans in many states still were subject to the Jim Crow Laws. The American
military was racially segregated, as was much of the federal government. The Tuskegee Airmen were subject to
racial discrimination, both within and outside the army. Despite these adversities, they trained and flew with
distinction. The Tuskegee 332nd Fighter Group was the only operational unit, first sent overseas as part of
Operation Torch, then in action in Sicily and Italy, before being deployed as bomber escorts in Europe where they
were particularly successful in their missions. It has been reported by some they never lost a bomber they escorted.

“Star Wars” creator George Lucas has revealed that it took him over 20 years to get his latest
movie, “Red Tails” completed. The film focuses on a heroic group of African-American fighter pilots during
World War II. Speaking with Jon Stewart on “The Daily Show,” Lucas admitted that he had to put down his own
money in order to see “Red Tails” finally up on the big screen, and revealed that the main reason why the big
studios did not want to pick up his project was “because it’s an all-black movie – there’s no major white roles in it at
all.”

The director said that although the movie features some major stars, such as Cuba Gooding Jr., Terence
Howard and R&B star Ne-Yo, the studios did not know how to market the film. Lucas noted that other all African-
American dominated movies are only picked up by smaller studios and make a limited amount of money –
while “Red Tails” demanded a much larger production budget. The producer put $58 million of his own money
into the production of the film, The Hollywood Reporter revealed, and is spending $35 million more for its
distribution. “Red Tails” directed by Anthony Hemingway(Director of HBO’s The Wire), is scheduled to be
released by Lucasfilm Ltd. on Jan. 20th, 2012 with 20th Century Fox distributing the film.

This story is part of American History and we need to support the hard work of the actors,
directors, and producers that have worked so hard to bring this story to the big screen. The story of the Tuskegee
Airmen is a fine example of ACHIEVEMENT; something all Kappa Men can identify with. Overcoming the odds
to excel where others thought they would fail.

This is a movie that we hope ALL MEMBERS of the Devine Nine
will support in mass wearing their Colors! I’m sure all of us have a friend or family member who is or was a
Tuskegee Airman!
