Hi, Readers!

Expect big changes on The Eastsider tomorrow, April 2. We are scheduled to switch over to a new layout and publishing system to keep us up to speed in our fast-changing business.

The Eastsider, now in its 10th year of operation, will be joining the more than 1,700 media outlets that use TownNews to create, publish and manage their digital publications. The switch represents a significant investment in time and money for a small outfit like ours. But I’m looking forward to the new look and the many behind-the-scenes features that will make the site more efficient for us and useful for you.

In addition to changes on TheEastsiderLA.com, our email newsletters will also adopt a new look. We also will be offering web notifications to alert you to the latest news.

As with any major change, there will likely be some hitches and glitches as we move to our new home on the internet. In case we experience problems or delays, check our Facebook page and Twitter feed for the latest news and updates. Wish us luck!

Lincoln Heights — On Saturday officials held a grand opening ceremony for the $44-million Albion Riverside Park — the city’s newest greenspace.

The triangular six-acre site next to the L.A. River at Spring Street includes playing fields, walking trails, restrooms, playgrounds, parking and an outdoor fitness center. But the park will also do double-duty as a giant filter to clean storm drain water before it flows in the adjacent L.A. River.

In fact, the project with Prop. O, which raised bond money for water quality improvement projects. A portion of the park sits on a large number of concrete cubes that serve as underground water storage and an infiltration/irrigation system. Above ground, bioswales, which are rock-line ditches, collect rain water to be filtered below.

The project, conceived nearly 15 years ago, proved more complicated and costly that expected. After an old dairy facility on the industrial site was demolished, the soil was found to be much more toxic than previously believed. The environmental clean up cost $2 million more than budgeted and took 20 months to complete, said an L.A. Times story

The project now forms the neighborhood’s second largest park and recreation area after Lincoln Park. The new park sits next to the Downey Recreation Center and is linked to the Downey Recreation Center Pool through a passage under the recently widened and retrofitted North Spring Street Bridge.

Park benches are positioned to take in the view of the Downtown skyline, the arches of the North Spring Street bridge and passing trains. Signs provide information about the local environment and wildlife.

While the park is promoted as “Reconnecting Lincoln Heights to the L.A. River,” that’s not exactly the case. A tall fence and a pair of freight train tracks block access to the concrete river channel.

On Saturday afternoon, a few hours after the dedication ceremony, only a few people wandered around the park and its artificial playing fields as the temperature hit 80 degrees.

Maybe with time, and more shade trees, the park will attract more visitors.

More supportive housing has opened in East Hollywood, and so has the new Albion Riverside Park in Lincoln Heights. And someone paid $387,500 over the asking price or a rundown Silver Lake A-Frame. Read on for your weekly real estate update.

East Hollywood

Sixty-five new units of supportive housing development have opened on Westmoreland Ave., a few blocks east of the Metro Red Line Vermont/Beverly Station, according to Multi-Housing News. It was developed by Affirmed Housing and PATH Ventures. Curbed reports that the complex at the northwest corner of Oakwood and N. Westmoreland has communal rooms, offices for counselors and case managers, and a veteran services office. The is the first part of the Metro Villas project. The second phase part will add a healthcare clinic, a mental health clinic, and over 100 units, and is expected to open in March 2020.

The wood-and-concrete frame has been completed for a new apartment complex at Melrose and Virgil Avenues, Urbanize reports. The five-story building will have 24 apartments and 7,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2019.

The new owner of a property at the southeast corner of Melrose and Oxford Avenues has come up with new plans that have far less parking, Urbanize said. Harriman Capital, which bought the vacant 27,000-square-foot site a year ago, now wants to build a seven-story, 75-foot-tall building with 42 apartments, including five for extremely low-income affordable units – and street-level parking for 28 vehicles. Entitlements under the previous owner were for a six-story building that with 45 apartments above ground-floor retail space and 77 parking spaces.

Lincoln Heights

The new Albion Riverside Park at Albion Street and Avenue 17 has officially opened, according to Urbanize. The six-acre park broke ground in May 2017, and cost $44 million. It includes athletic fields, fitness equipment, walking paths, playgrounds, a picnic area, and a river observation area with a bioswale.

Los Feliz

A rendering of the proposed City Lights development at Hollywood Boulevard and Hillhurst Avenue is now posted on Urbanize. The blacktop has now been plowed up throughout the large parcel, including the site of the old Auto Zone at the street corner. Plans call for 202 residential units, with about 14,725 square feet of ground-floor retail space. The plan has not been without controversy, however. Neighbors have said the architecture is inconsistent with the rest of the neighborhood, and that the 400 or so parking spaces planned for the complex would not be enough. The project qualifies for “relaxed” parking requirements because it is close to the Vermont/Sunset Red Line station.

Mt. Washington

The owner of the historic Southwest Museum on Museum Drive said it is looking for another organization to run the place. The Southwest is closed to the public for much of the year and most of its valuable collection of Native American artifacts has been moved to a storage facility in Burbank, even though The Autry Museum of the American West, which took over the Southwest in 2003, has invested millions in the facility. The Eastsider

Silver Lake

A dilapidated one-bedroom A-frame home without running water — but with a pool and reservoir views — has sold for $1.237 million. That’s $387,500 over the asking price.

A Roundup of Eastside News & Info

A program in Echo Park for mostly homeless veterans closes. A few lucky people in El Sereno could get really cheap homes. And the county sheriff’s department is hit with lawsuit over a fatal deputy shooting. Here’s your News & Notes for Monday:

Echo Park veterans housing program shuts down

A 72-bed program for veterans in Echo Park will close down Monday after six years, reported the LA Times. Located in a residential neighborhood with views, the tranquil cottages in the gentrifying neighborhood offered mostly homeless veterans a peaceful respite with close amenities and chance to get on their feet.

But Volunteers of America, which operates the program, told the Times the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs will end the program but gave no real reason for the decision. A department spokeswoman told the news organization the program was ending because there were better applicants for the grant of $1 million a year but didn’t reveal more details on who they were.

Volunteers of America has slowly been moving residents into other housing, including a 500-bed shelter in Bell.

It’s not clear what will happen to the bungalows where the vets had been living. They are part of the Gateway Hospital, which has been treated patients with mental health problems and addiction.

A million dollar home could go for as little as $24,000

Million dollar homes in El Sereno and South Pasadena could soon be sold to low-income renters for as little as $24,000 — their value decades ago, Pasadena Star News reported. Their owner, CalTrans, is trying to unload hundreds of its properties along the path of a dead proposal to extend the 710 freeway 4.5 miles. But a California Superior Court judge ruled earlier this month the agency didn’t have the authority to mark up the price for inflation when selling them to their low-income renters, according to the Star News.

Three low-income female renters argued the state should sell them the homes at the original price and sued the state agency when it offered to sell below market rate last year, but hundreds of thousands more than they paid for it. One of those women, Angeles Flores, has lived in her home decades. CalTrans paid $23,733 and wanted to charge her $171,547. Homes near her go for $1 million. CalTrans has until May 17 to appeal.

Mom of man fatally shot by sheriff deputies in East L.A. sues

The mother of a 21-year-old fatally shot by two Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies searching for robbery suspects in the Nueva Maravilla Housing Community last summer sued the county and department for wrongful death, the LA Times reported.

The lawsuit claims Anthony Daniel Vargas was unarmed and posed no imminent threat Aug. 12 when he was shot. But, officials then told the Times, he resisted deputies attempts to handcuff him before he pulled a gun from his waistband and deputies got into a violent struggle. Vargas had a gun in his hand when they shot him, officials had said.

We reported then, the deputy-involved shooting took place after a man was robbed at gunpoint at about 2 am. The victim directed officers to a group of individuals, who fled across the housing complex.

By RACHEL URANGA

One man was seriously injured during a fight with another man outside Dodger stadium following a game that ended early Saturday morning, police said.

A 47-year-old father of four was on life support after getting into a dispute with a man in the Dodger stadium parking lot, reported ABC7.

The victim was identified by his wife as Rafael Reyna. Police said they are searching for a man in his 20s who may have driven off in a white SUV, possibly a Toyota 4Runner.

“He was hit and his head hit the ground and caused a skull fracture, and now his brain is swelling. He’s bleeding on the brain,” his wife Christel Reyna told the ABC7.

She said she was on the phone with her husband as he was leaving the station and heard arguing. “I was hearing the arguing happening and then I heard like a smack, a crack. It sounded like a baseball bat, and then I heard him start moaning,” she said.

The Dodgers lost 5-4 against the Arizona Diamondbacks in the longest regular-season game in the stadium’s history. The game, which stretched for slightly more than 6 hours, ended shortly after 1:30 am on Saturday.

EDITED by BARRY LANK

A recap of some of the past week’s scenes, sightings and stories from across the Eastside.

The bodies of two men were found a day apart in Echo Park from causes that were not immediately apparent. On Monday, a homeless person was found dead at the Edendale post office on Alvarado. The deceased was identified as 49-year-old Fred Contreras Jr. A day later, another man was found dead in a public restroom at Echo Park Lake. Maintenance workers discovered the body of a white male in his 20s on Tuesday morning in a restroom near the boathouse. Both cases were referred to the County Coroner. The Eastsider, March 26 and March 25

About 24,000 runners poured through the streets last weekend for the 2019 L.A. Marathon. Residents cheered and photographed as runners passed Echo Park Lake and then headed west on Sunset into Silver Lake. Elisha Barno was the fastest runner among the men, with a time of 2:11:45. Ethiopian Askale Merachi finished first among women, with a time of 2:24:11 – a record for the marathon. The Eastsider

A man was shot at the same East Hollywood station where a woman had been sexually assaulted a week earlier. Police arrested a suspect in the early shooting of a 45-year-old man in the station at Sunset Boulevard and Vermont Avenue. The two men had gotten got into some sort of argument on the station platform around 1 a.m., when one of the men pulled out a handgun and opened fire. On March 14, police said a transient raped, strangled and beat a woman in her 60s at that same station. CBS

The Los Feliz Neighborhood Council wants street safety measures on Hyperion and Fountain avenues after a woman was fatally struck earlier this year along one of the streets. Cristina Garcia had been collecting bottles to pay for her daughter’s college when a car lost control and hit her as she stood on Hyperion. It’s unclear if any traffic calming measures would have made a difference, but the council said the incident showed the need for attention. The city’s High Injury Network – a database of the streets and intersections with the highest number of deaths and serious injuries – includes a stretch of Fountain that’s just a block from where Garcia was killed. Curbed LA.

There’s at least one gender-neutral restroom in every Los Angeles Unified School District campus. But, at least in Boyle Heights schools, not everyone knows about it. Roosevelt High School principal Ben Gertner advocated for the change and created gender-neutral bathrooms even before a 2016 state law required single-use restrooms provided by employers and government agencies be gender neutral. But he kept it low key, opting to reach out to LGBTQ groups groups instead of making it more widely known. Boyle Heights Beat

Teachers’ union favorite and front-runner Jackie Goldberg will face off against Heather Repenning, a former Mayor Eric Garcetti aide and public works commissioner, in May for a seat on the school board, according to the official results released late last week. Repenning narrowly beat Graciela Ortiz, a school counselor and a Huntington Park council member, by 31 votes for second place. The District 5 board seat represents most of the schools on the Eastside. LA Times

The owner of the historic Southwest Museum in Mt. Washington said it is looking for another organization to run the place. The Southwest is closed to the public for much of the year and most of its valuable collection of Native American artifacts has been moved to a storage facility in Burbank, even though The Autry Museum of the American West, which took over the Southwest in 2003, has invested millions in the facility. The Eastsider

A woman in her 60s was shot in the upper back in Highland Park, and is in stable condition. The suspect remains at large. Police officers found the woman after going to the 6300 block of Aldama Street on a report of three or four shots fired. She had been shot while walking on the street. It is unclear if the victim was an unintended target. Police described the suspect as a male Latino, 5-feet, 11-inches tall with a medium build. The Eastsider

BY CECILIA PADILLA-BRILL

Here’s your weekly rundown of Eastside dining and shopping news.

In honor of Women’s History Month, LAist compiled a rundown of “Women Who Are Changing the Way LA Drinks.” Turns out quite a few ladies from the Eastside made the mark. Patricia Perez, Roselma Samala and Christine Sumiller of Historic Fillipinotown’s Genever bar all received nods for their philanthropic efforts and for crafting killer cocktails. Ting Su of Eagle Rock Brewery, Eagle Rock Public House and founder of Women’s Beer Forum was named “as one of LA’s modern beer pioneers.” Roni Ginach of Kismet in Los Feliz and Cliff’s Edge in Silver Lake made her mark for her natural wine selections. Rounding up the list is Coly Den Haan, who has curated a female driven wine selection at her wine store Vinovore in Silver Lake.

Supercool Creamery has found a permanent home adjacent to the Vista Movie Theatre, the company announced. The nitro-artisan ice cream show founded by Ben Fernebok has been a company and celebrity favorite for the past seven years. With the arrival of Supercool Creamery’s brick and mortar, fans and newbies get a first-hand show behind the fast freezing process of flavors such as cookies and cream, mint chip, green tea, mango sorbet and peanut butter pretzel.
Built in 1965, this is the midcentury modern you’ve been waiting for. Is it possible one property could have so much to offer? The spacious home is located on a peaceful hillside road, enjoying an incredible lot that takes in views and yet still has a sparkling pool and flat yard area (yes, at a hillside home!).

Inside are 4 bedrooms and 2 baths, with a formal living room upstairs that has corner windows with sunset views to die for and a cool freestanding fireplace. The master bedroom also has views and a huge bath with separate shower and spa tub, shared with the second bedroom.

Downstairs is an open concept kitchen with large center island, dining area, and sitting area, making it very easy to hang out with the cook or flow out to the deck. Two more bedrooms (one used as a media room) and a bath are on this level. The bonus lower level has been turned into a charming studio space with its own bath, and is perfect for guests or home office. This is true California living at its best!

Hi, we lost our cat! No idea how he got out of the house but we last saw him last night when going to bed.

He is a very large (outstandingly so) white cat with black spots and black tail. Huge blue eyes and a characteristic middle part down his head. He has a collar with a bell.

He is a very scaredy indoor cat (with very limited backyard experience) so he must be super scared. He tends to hide so under cars and low structures is my biggest bet.

Going crazy searching the house 10000 times and my compound and nearby streets.

Please if you see him let me know

In 1960, life seemed less complicated, which is part of why the midcentury style is so popular today. This home is a good example. The simple, clean lines, and high, open-beamed ceilings give a feeling of space, of expansiveness, of endless possibilities.

The layout is straightforward, providing spacious rooms and a workable floor plan that includes an actual entry hall, a true master with its own bathroom, and a kitchen/dining room with plenty of space for cooking and entertaining. Recently refreshed with cork flooring, neutral interior paint, updated light fixtures, this is a wonderful combination of original style and modern touches.

Located in a private setting just a few steps from Hill Drive, the feeling is almost like it’s on a country road. It is perched up from the street to take advantage of awesome views. The surprising backyard has a covered patio off the dining room which is perfect for al fresco dinner parties.

There is also a private nook (with view) for the spa, and a large flat sports court area. You can garden if you wish, or just leave the planted xeriscape and spend your time with the kids shooting hoops.

Open House: Sunday, March 31, 2-5pm.

Highland Park — A suspect remains at large after shooting an elderly woman in the back early Tuesday night.

Officers responded to the 6300 block of Aldama Street after receiving a call reporting 3 to 4 shots fired in the area at about 7:15 p.m.

The victim, a woman in her 60s, was found at the scene with a gunshot wound to her upper back, said Sgt. James Zboravan with LAPD’s Northeast Division.

The suspect shot the victim as she was walking on the street. It is unclear if the shooting was gang related and if the victim was an unintended target, Zboravan said.

Police described the suspect as a male Latino, 5-feet, 11-inches tall with a medium build. He remains at large, Zboravan said.

The victim was transported to the hospital and is in stable condition.

This morning I found a friendly husky in my backyard. He showed up and started playing with my dog. I took him to the vet on York Blvd but they say he isn’t microchipped. He has a collar but no name or number on it.
