This Week In Pictures…

A couple of weeks ago I came home from working on the Golden Globes to find that the husband had bought me a camera! How great is that?! I was ecstatic!! (You can refer to my instagram if you don’t believe me!) I had definitely been wanting one for some time, but hadn’t said much about it since we already have one photographer in the family. Needless to say, I have already fallen in love with toting it around everywhere with me which brings about our new weekly post, “This Week In Pictures”. I am hoping that this little exercise in sharing my photos will help me to improve my skills as I am quite the amateur right now! So without further ado, here is to the first week in pictures and to hoping that one day we all look back on these and think, “Wow, her photos look so much better now!”

Who doesn’t love a good party? My friend Michelle has a birthday just around the corner (the big 3-0!)and emailed me to let me know she is searching for the perfect party dress. She wants something bright– which I love. It is in fact her day, isn’t it? Why should she just blend in? Anyhow, I found these options for her and thought they could also double perfect for all kinds of other occasions– bridal shower (tis the season), baby shower, valentine’s day date, and of course my favorite: no occasion at all.

Go Your Own Way

So here is a little insight into my brain and one of the reasons why it loves fashion: You can take one piece of clothing–let’s say a black sequin mini skirt for example– and you can pair it with a million different other pieces and come up with (approximately) a trillion different looks. Depending on your personal style, you could make it chic and sophisticated or quirky and eccentric. An oxford and a strong collar would make it preppy but leather motorcycle boots and a really lived-in tee would make it edgy.

So I have to ask: What is your personal style fingerprint?

Denim Shirt

It’s not that often that you can equate a piece of clothing worn by your friendly neighborhood construction worker with being chic so why not take advantage? I have been on a bit of a dress kick lately so perhaps that is why I woke up with a hankering for something easy and somewhat androgynous this morning. A great denim shirt is such an easy piece to mix and match with things you already have that no wardrobe should really be without one. Bright skinny jeans add a pop of color and softer colors keep the look feminine. There are literally endless possibilities with this one…

Taking Off

I am taking off for a few days and could not be more excited! Between the People’s Choice Awards, the Golden Globes, and working on a mega commercial project last week I feel like I have been eating and breathing all things work since the new year began. And you know what they say about all work and no play! I think a little mini-vacation may be just what the doctor ordered…

It won’t be all play, though. I am super excited to be attending the Alt Design Summit where I will get to learn and connect with the all of these lovely and totally impressive people and hopefully bring home new inspirations and techniques to share with all of you next week!

And to that goal, my totally sweet and always thoughtful hubby bought me this while I was working Sunday… Amazing, right?! I can’t wait to take her out for a spin! Here are to many new photos here on The Effortless Chic in 2012!

And with that, I really must go pack now! Everyone keep your fingers crossed that the flight is long enough to finally catch up on the ever-growing stack of untouched magazines in my office!

And The Winner Is…

Charlize Theron could not have been more glamorous last night in a pale pink Dior gown and stunning Cartier jewels. That diamond headband was beyond! To me she was the full package: the hair, the make-up, the dress, and the accessories all came together perfectly. She certainly gets my vote for best dressed of last night’s Golden Globes. My runner up was definitely Michelle Williams in Jason Wu. Who were your favorites?

Color Blocking

Don’t you love when a word is actually totally self-explanatory? Someone asked me the other day what color blocking meant and, after a short pause, I replied, “It is literally just blocks of solid colors next to each other.” Effortless chic at its best! And while it is hardly a new trend, it is definitely one of my favorites. The look packs a serious eye-catching, jaw-dropping punch with pieces you probably already have in your closet! See below, and just try to tell me you aren’t a fan

Peplum

peplum (noun): A short flared, gathered, or pleated strip of fabric attached at the waist of a woman’s jacket, dress, or blouse.

Young hollywood seems to be all about this look these days. Spotted on Diana Agron, Kirsten Dunst, Emma Stone, and Emma Watson, just to name few, the peplum dress is making waves. I personally love it because it is form fitting and shows off your shape, but still flirty and fun! Now that Giambattista Valli and Stella McCartney did them for fall, expect to see this trend translate to the street in the Spring.

Pastels

Perhaps it is this warm, summery weather we have been having or maybe it is just the natural digression away from the bold, bright and primary colors of 2011. Either way, I have found myself gravitating towards soft pastel hues lately. Do you remember the Louis Vuitton Spring 2012 show? All of those gorgeous pastels going round and round on the carousel– such a dreamy scene!
