The Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester has announced that Elaine Cassidy and Katherine Pearce will lead the cast of Rory Mullarkey’s new play Even These Things, which premieres next month.

Running as part of the venue’s 50th anniversary season, the drama takes place in three different moments of Manchester’s history, including the day an IRA bomb exploded in the city centre in 1996. Directed by James Macdonald, it runs from 15 May to 15 June 2026, the final performance marking exactly 30 years to the day when the bomb exploded.

Irish actress Elaine Cassidy will play Annie Donovan/Kaz. Her film credits include Disco Pigs, for which she won the Irish Film and Television Award, Felicia’s Journey and The Wonder alongside Florence Pugh, while on stage she’s been seen in Aristocrats, Fathers and Sons and Les Liasons Dangereuses (Donmar Warehouse), as well as Scenes from the Big Picture (National Theatre), There Came a Gypsy Riding (Almeida Theatre), The Lieutenant of Inishmore and The Crucible (RSC).

At the heart of the story is Sarah Fenn (Elaine Cassidy), Sanctuary’s resident witch, on whom the town relies to solve their problems when conventional remedies have failed. When local teen rugby star, Dan Whithall, dies tragically in an apparent accident, his death exposes a terrifying undercurrent of suspicion and fear towards Sarah and her teenage daughter, Harper (Hazel Doupe). Mother of the dead boy, Abigail (Amy de Bhrun), once Sarah’s closest friend, is wracked with grief, and to avenge her son’s death, launches a modern-day witch-hunt to get “justice”, no matter what the cost.

Sanctuary: A Witch’s Tale stars Cassidy, Doupe, and de Bhrun, along with Stephanie Levi-John, Valerie O’Connor, Kelly Campbell and Stephen Lord. The series is executive produced by Monumental Television (Mrs Sidhu Investigates, Harlots) and is directed by Lisa Mulcahy and Justin Molotnikov.

If you’ve watched the entire series, you’ll know this is quite a significant character in the story and it will be interesting to see how the series plays out. If you haven’t started watching The Last Kingdom, I highly recommend it. Like Game of Thrones, it takes a few episodes to get into it, but once you do, it’s a great little ride to go on and the fact it has a lot to do with our actual history, makes it all the more enjoyable.

It was only thanks to Elaine’s publicity company, ARG Talent that I was made aware of Elaine’s involvement as she is not yet listed as one of the cast members on the film’s IMDb page, so I’m not even sure who she plays yet, but she is very present in the trailer for the Netflix feature film which you can view here.

So set your Netflix reminders for April 14th to not only see Elaine in this epic film, but if you’ve been an avid watcher of The Last Kingdom, watch as Uhtred of Bebbanburg and his comrades strive to form a united England.

The fantasy mystery series will star Elaine Cassidy, who was also in A Discovery of Witches, who will play a witch in this series named Sarah Fenn, while Hazel Doupe (Smother), who will be playing Sarah’s daughter Harper Fenn. Rounding out the cast will be Stephanie Levi-John (The Spanish Princess) and Amy De Bhrún (Line of Duty), who will also appear as DCI Maggie Knight and Abigail Whitehall, respectively.

After the local golden boy is discovered dead in an unexplained accident, the daily life in Sanctuary, a fictional, small U.K. town, gets shaken to its very core by murder accusations. The townspeople end up unloading their paranoia and suspicion upon Sarah and Harper, leading to a modern-day witch hunt. The tagline for the book is, “every town has its secrets, Sanctuary is built on them,” indicating this is a story full of intrigue.

Unlike with Totally, Completely Fine, Sanctuary will be an AMC production in partnership with Monumental Television. The previously announced titles for AMC in 2023 include Clean Sweep, The Lovers, SisterS, Black Snow, and Far North. All of these will stream exclusively on Sundance Now and AMC+ in the U.S. and Canada, except Clean Sweep and SisterS, which will only be available in the United States.
