A recent editorial in the New York Times by John Horgan asks "will there ever be another Einstein?" In the article, James Gleick (author of the Richard Feynman biography "Genius") provides one answer why the answer is "no." From the Times article, Horgan reports Gleick's view that "there are so many brilliant physicists alive today that it has become harder for any individual to stand apart from the pack." "In other words," say Horgan, "our perception of Einstein as a towering figure is, well, relative."Horgan goes on to add his own "corollary" to support why Einstein was the last of his kind: namely, the decline of government funding and number of new American PhD's. However, I think Horgan should have spent more time following Gleick's reasoning and done some basic homework on evolutionary biology. Had he done so, he would have come across a wonderful evolutionary argument for such phenomena put forth by one of my own personal heros, Stephan Jay Gould.

Well, it's the New Year, which means time to make -- and try to keep -- a set of New Year's resolutions. And tops among those resolutions is a perennial favorite: losing weight. But this year, the Internet may provide help to the 97% of dieters who say they will need some assistance to keep their resolution. A recent CNet article outlines how weight-loss Web sites help dieters keep the pounds off, saying "it might seem counterintuitive, but many dieters find that sitting in front of a computer and using the Internet helps them to keep those weight-loss resolutions." Said one dieter, a subscriber of SparkPeople: "I find that I need that motivation from other people who are going through what I'm going through. People are writing you all the time... You learn how to do your portions. You learn how to make good choices with those foods and how to read labels, from the comfort of your own home."

I've always thought that the highly-competitive weight-loss and sports club industries offer a valuable lesson to designers of (e)Learning environments: group support is a critical ingredient in helping individuals achieve their personal goals.

I was able to pick up some inexpensive RAM and a new battery, and so now I have a screaming 400MHz G3 laptop sporting 1GB of RAM and 5 hours of airplane life! Actually, I'm rather amazed: the 4 year old laptop is more than usable. Sure, start-up times are a bit sluggish for the OS (I installed 10.4) and apps, but once booted, the machine runs just fine. Now I'll finally be able to take my Keynote presentations with me for roadshow talks (sorry Powerpoint!).

Turns out, all those students assembled in the lecture hall aren't really listening to their Professor and using their laptops to take notes. Instead, they're (surprise!) reading e-maiil, surfing the web, and trading IMs. But while UCLA, Stanford, and other guardians of the past consider (to quote a Wall Street Journal article) "devices to block wireless access in the classroom after faculty complaints of out-of-control web surfing," Mr. Zenilman and others ponder a more revolutionary (but obvious?) approach: replace the lecture format itself with approaches that require students to actively engage and participate in their learning process.
