Join us for two superb nights of WAAPA Jazz graduation recitals Tuesday and Wednesday evening and witness the new breed of local talent ready to take on the world. The legendary fusion supergroup Manteca are back on Thursday featuring the next generation of musicians to steer this enigmatic ensemble. Narissa Campbell is revisiting her hometown from New York city for one show only this Friday, followed by the last gig of a 6 month residency from The Spread, featuring a trio of fine singers - Danny Martin, Jade Webb and Aaron Malone. Saturday sees return gigs from Blanche BuBois and the horny devils from Hornography. Sunday rounds out the weekend with singer songwriter senstation Jordie Lane who is touring from LA. Manteca, The Next Generation - Hear some of Perth’s top session muso’s playing Fusion, Jazz and R n B in a 9 piece band that includes Ric Eastman, Roy Martinez, Pat Reale, Annie Neil, Mario Annamalay and the horn section featuring Kieran, Benn, Matt and Simon. Manteca was conceived over 30 yrs ago by reedman and percussionist Uwe Stengel and it has recorded several albums and TV shows. Manteca - Next Gen version carries on that tradition. FRIDAY 7.00pm Narissa Campbell (NYC)

Narissa's music has its roots in jazz, weaves its way through sombre pop-ballads, bluesy folk songs, moody instrumentals and a lyricism full of thought and space. She explores a tricky, dark emotional landscape, lit with fleeting flashes of joy. You can get caught up in the late night jazz club ambience, but there’s always some hint of lost love and loneliness lurking around the corner. Ms. Campbell has developed a unique and deeply personal writing and performing voice. There is a sincere, raw and open emotional quality to her songs. Her voice shifts in mood and expressiveness, becoming rough and syrupy, plaintive, or smooth and sexy. She delivers a song with laid-back assurance and attitude of a young Peggy Lee. A prolific writer and seasoned performer, Nerissa penned all three of her albums, Paint Me Orange (2003), Musings of a Telescopic Tree (2009) and Blue Shadows (2012) and is currently finishing her most ambitious work yet, Little Little Just which combines her love of jazz & Balinese gamelan and explores a cross-cultural musical narrative commenting on identity, community & culture. The work not only explores her own relationship with Indonesia after a childhood spent in Bali, but also what community and culture means musically in the 21st century. Click here for tickets

FRIDAY 10.30pm The Spread featuring Danny Martin, Jade Webb and Aaron Malone

Tonight it's a team effort for the final week of the Spread residency at the Ellington. The band is bringing 3 amazing singers to the one stage for the royal send-off! Come listen to the vocal talents of Denny Martin, Jack Webb and Karl Malone on stage at The Ellington - the Spread is going to tear it up one last time by bringing you tunes you know and love. SATURDAY 7.00pm Blanche DuBois

Blanche DuBois return to The Ellington after a few month's hiatus for a special show with their live band. The sisters recently performed to international audiences in USA and Canada (including showcases at NXNE Festival in Toronto). Whilst in Canada they also commenced work on their 4th full-length album with producer Mike Timmins at the helm (guitarist - Cowboy Junkies). They'll be returning to the northern hemisphere to put the finishing touches on the album in the coming months, with a view to releasing the record mid-2014. Over the years Blanche DuBois have carved a name for themselves as one of Perth's finest acts - supporting the likes of Jewel, Sarah McLachlan, Ben Folds, Crosby Stills and Nash, Joe Cocker, Kasey Chambers, Paul Kelly, Missy Higgins and even The Bangles. SATURDAY 10.30pm Hornography The Return

Back by popular demand and fresh off their debut on the Ellington Stage for the annual feature extravaganza “KNSGB”, Hornography comes together again to tell you that it’s totes OK to get loose every now and then. Bringing an 8-piece powerhouse band featuring vocalist Danny Martin and a four-piece horn section, this night promises to be one that leaves dignity and class alone in the dark. SUNDAY 5.30pm Jordie Lane (LA)

One of Australia's most acclaimed troubadours Jordie Lane will tour Australia this October/November to celebrate the release of his forthcoming EP 'Not Built To Last'. Released on October 18th through Vitamin Records, 'Not Built To Last' follows Lane's acclaimed 2011 album 'Blood Thinner' which was nominated for 'Best Blues & Roots Album' at the 2012 Australian Independent Music Awards and cemented him as one of the country's finest songwriting talents. Since releasing 'Blood Thinner', Lane has headlined four Australian tours, supported tours for The Moody Blues, Billy Bragg and Ruthie Foster, and released the single 'Fool For Love', which was downloaded over 40,000 times as iTunes Single of the Week. In May 2013, Lane relocated to Los Angeles, focusing on co-writing and recording for two months. He then toured North America in July and August, playing over 30 shows with main stage appearances at Winnipeg and Calgary Folk Festivals. Lane now returns to Australia to showcase the fruits of his labour with brand new songs from 'Not Built To Last', and his trademark stories from a life traveling the globe. Click here for tickets

MONDAY 28th October 7.00pm Chamber Jam

Chamber Jam @ The Ellington is a night of chamber music in Perth like no other. Join some of Australia’s leading musicians in three outstanding ensembles performing in one of Perth’s most intimate live music venues. Last month we had a diverse range of musicians play gypsy jazz, piano pieces from the ages and recipes with trumpets and a flute. Expect another wild night of extremely different and diverse Chamber Jam guru’s along with Phil Doncan who will be joining us for some live painting again… and it should have some very interesting results due to the nature of the music. Featuring Lousie Devenish (percussion) , ISQ String Quartet (Rachael Aquilina, violin, Teresa Vinci, violin, Bourby Webster, viola, Emma McCoy, cello) and Hot Paprika (Teresa Vinci, Ben Banyai, Peter Sackett and Jozsi Kajcsa). Join us for a fabulous week of music kicking off with the new band "JOGS" featuring some fine local musical talent. Continuing the October WAAPA recital series this week is the graduands from the Contemporary Music program showcasing their talent on Tuesday and Wednesday evening. Canadian Tim Chaisson is touring with Deisel at present and will be performing for us on Thursday, so be sure to check that show out. Heading into the weekend we feature shows from Shameem, Penny King, Ota Fotu and Dd Soul with the Chelsea Cullen. Then unwind at the Sunday session with a new take on Beatles material from The Fab Three.

MONDAY 7.00pm JOGS - Jeans O'Halloran Grigson Susnjar

As the name suggests, the lineup of JOGS initially met at their regular 5am fitness and workout sessions and eventually thought, "hey, we all play instruments, let's put our international sports modelling careers on hold for a minute and see if we can't whip up some tunes for a gig at the Ellington Jazz Club". It was only after they all started recognising each other at various gigs and the halls and corridors of WAAPA that they realised the standard of musicianship was higher than expected and nearly matched their strength, stamina and athletic prowess. They knew they could be onto a good thing. "Wait a minute" said Tom, "don't we need a bass player?" "No!" the other three shouted in semi-unison, dragging Tom from the piano and clamping his left hand to the lower register of the formidable Hammond Organ. "Learn these notes, it'll be fine. But your other hand should do some stuff as well." "I can hit things!" grinned Daniel, as he proceeded to hit some things. After much wailing and gnashing of teeth, Fred & Simon finally agreed to disagree as to who gets to play lead or rhythm guitar, and an extremely fit and toned modern improvising ensemble was born, ushering in an exciting new era and the debut of the challenging & demanding, yet curiously satisfying musical genre "Jazzthletics". Watch out Australia, Canadian Tim Chaisson is returning to our land to once again embrace the tour circuit with ARIA award winning artist Diesel. Chaisson will be joining Diesel on his ‘Let It Fly’ Tour where the pair will be on the road promoting their new EP titled ‘Last Shower’ due for release on the 11th October 2013 through ABC / UMA. Winner of the 2013 Best Roots Album at the Canadian East Coast Music Awards, playing at the 2013 SXSW festival, holding an impressive collection of awards and constantly performing to ever-expanding audiences across the globe, local audiences have had a taste of what Chaisson has to offer and are looking forward to seeing him back on our stages bringing forth his charismatic, humble and artisan approach to his work. FRIDAY 7.00pm Shameem

You may know Shameem’s voice from her track “Turn It On” which has been featured in a major advertising campaign all over Western Australian primetime TV. Born in Australia to a Chinese-Malaysian father and an Iranian mother, this bubbly vocalist and songwriter enchants her audiences with her heartfelt, personal stories and spiritual influences in her songs. Shameem recently had a track nominated for the Independent Music Awards, and is recently returned from touring the USA and Canada where she performed at Canadian Music Festival. She has supported such artists as George Benson, Ronan Keating and Belinda Carlisle, and keeps a busy performing schedule. Her music often compared to that of such artists as Alicia Keys and Sade. To see what all the fuss is about, check out Shameem as she presents an evening of her unique concoction of soul, R&B and jazz with her hard-grooving band. Featuring: Shameem Taheri-Lee – vocals/ Astrid Ripepi – backing vocals/ Dom Barrett – Guitar/ Harry Mitchell – keys/ Callum Morrison - bass/ Ethan Darnell – drums. FRIDAY 10.30pm The Spread featuring Ofa Fotu (Odette Mercy)

Ofa is an incredible singer and awesome all round performer. You might know her by the name of Odette Mercy. She fronts funk/soul band Odette Mercy and Her Soul Atomics, who always put on a great show. She has also be seen performing about town with The Houstons’, The Corner and The Funk Club House Band. Ofa has an amazing stage presence which will get you dancing and leave you in a haze of awe. Ofa will be joined by The Spread, the Ellington’s house band which features: Sean Phillips on drums, Roy Martinez on bass, Chris Foster on keys and Harry Winton on guitar. Click here for tickets

SATURDAY 7.00pm Penny King

Fresh from Crank studios, where she has been recording her debut album with her incredible band, Penny is back at her favourite venue for a night of her favourite tunes! Before Penny’s album launch (coming up at the Ellington very soon, so stay tuned!) come and see the band revisit some favourites; firmly rooted in jazz but taking in all styles in between. This stylish and sophisticated singer has been performing with her band since 1996, and is as well known to those in the know for her passionate and evocative stage presence as she is for her diverse arrangements of standards and contemporary tunes alike. Her position as vocal tutor in the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts’ jazz department is testament to her respected place in the thriving Perth Jazz scene. This show will feature her regular line up of Carl Mackey on saxophone, Tom O’Halloran on piano, and Pete Jeavons on Double Bass plus very special guest Daniel Susnjar on drums. Dd Soul will be gracing the Ellington stage once again playing a combination of R&B, Pop, funk, Blues tunes. Fronting Dd Soul will be Chelsea Cullen, A Talented up and coming vocalist. Beatles acoustic trio, The Fab Three, draws a group of experienced Perth musicians together by their love of one of the world’s greatest bands (Sorry, Rolling Stones fans, we mean The Beatles!). Brendan, Megan and Minky G have a rich background in WA’s original music scene: between them, they’ve played with The Morning Night; Ryan Webb and The Method; The Brow Horn Orchestra; Minky G and Rosco, and even at The Raw Comedy Festival! It’s a labour of love for these three muso’s to reproduce The Fab Four’s fantastic vocal harmonies as an acoustic trio: making their live shows the perfect way to relax and relive these amazing songs in a new way. MONDAY 21st October 7.00pm Song Lounge

Song Lounge @ The Ellington brings an array of local Perth artists to the stage to share their song writing stories with you in an intimate setting. Those who attended September's Song Lounge were treated to the beautiful voices and quirks of Elk Bell, Holly Norman and Rachel Gorman, finishing the evening with Noah Shilkin working the grand piano! What an exciting week of music at The Ellington with 14 shows demonstrating a wide and diverse range of musical styles. Starting tonight with one of Australia's finest large ensembles, The Mace Francis Orchestra, performing music from their upcoming CD "Music for Average Photography". Following this will be some of WAAPA's best students presenting their Honours graduating recitals on Tuesday and Wednesday. Two of our favourite divas Libby Hammer and Ali Bodycoat are doing individual shows on Thursday and Friday and then a show together on Saturday with the Graham Wood Trio in support over all three nights. Add to this a couple of kids cushion concerts on Friday morning for the young ones. Late shows from Jade Webb (Friday) and GrooVe (Saturday) will lead into a double show Sunday with WAYJO and touring singer song writer Aimee Francis.

MONDAY 8th October 7.00pm MFO Music for Average Photography

Tonight’s performance is a preview of the new MFO project called “Music For Average Photography” - a series on new music written to accompany some pretty average photographs taken this year with a camera phone. A humours way to inspire some serious music. This new music will be recorded in mid Oct for a new MFO CD release. Be the first to hear it. Libby and the guys normally play weekends at the Ellington, so in honour of this unusual midweek spot, they are going to prepare something fabulous. They've told us that maybe they'll perform only weekday songs such as Stormy Monday, but at the time of going to print they couldn't think of any other weekday jazz songs, so they've said maybe they'll wear their jimmy jams. In any case, it's going to be special. Joined by band extraodinaire Graham Wood on piano, Ben Vanderwal on drummings and Nicholai Abbey on double bazz, this is the best way to end the week if your week finishes on a Thursday. FRIDAY 9.00am & 10.30am The Ellington cushion concerts for kids

The Ellington is putting on two cushion concerts for kids (and accompanying adults!). The shows are at 9.30am and 11.00am (with doors at 9.00am and 10.30am respectively). Libby Hammer, one of Perth's most vibrant and energetic Jazz vocalists, along with four leading musicians from the Perth Jazz scene - Chris Foster- piano, Nick Abbey - double bass, Michael Perkins – drums, and Steve Searle - multi-instrumentalist will introduce kids to the world of Jazz in a fun, interactive and intimate setting. They’ll also get to meet the mysterious but very cool 'Mister Jazzcat'. Just bring a cushion to sit on and be ready to have fun learning about Jazz. At around 50 minutes each, these shows are pitched at an age range of 4-7 years old but children of all ages are welcome and will be able to enjoy the event. FRIDAY 7.00pm The Amazing Ali Bodycoat Trio

If Saturday night is the loneliest night of the week, then why not come down to the Ellington on Friday night first and find someone awesome to dance with cheek to cheek on the Saturday!? Well regarded as one of Western Australia’s most talented and respected professional jazz vocalists, Ali Bodycoat has established herself as an unrivalled force in the local jazz industry. Tonight she is joined by basically what is regarded as the best looking older male boy band in the world - Graham Wood on piano, Ben Vanderwal on drums and Nick Abbery on bass. Live music is far more entertaining than dead music and where better to experience the best live music in Perth than the best live music venue in Perth! Jade Webb is a soulful and inspiring singer who as been performing in R&B, Funk and Pop bands for many years around town. You may have seen her fronting the successful Soul, Pop group Booty Jooce at The Aberdeen on Saturday nights. Jade’s immersion in such a wide range of music has given her voice and unmistakable individual sound, which is both sweet but powerful. This is a show not to be missed. Jade will be joined by the tightest house-band in town The Spread - Roy Martinez on bass, Sean Phillips on drums, Chris Foster on keys, Harry Winton on guitar and special guest Danny Martin on backing vocals. SATURDAY 10.30 GrooVe

GrooVe, intransitive verb. is the sense of a propulsive rhythmic "feel" or sense of "swing" created by the interaction of the music played by a band's rhythm section most commonly consisting of Serge "Bassface", Dan "Drumalicious", Maty "Keytastic", and Priam "Guitararific". Ultimately tied together by the vocal stylings of Kimberly "Cant Touch This" and Georgia "On Your Mind". Ubiquitous in popular music, GrooVe is a consideration in genres such as disco, funk, rock, fusion, and soul. SUNDAY 3.00pm WAYJO Swingin Sundays with Paddy Fitzallen

The WA Youth Jazz Orchestra (WAYJO) Swing Band is inspired by the big bands of the 1930s to the 1960s, led by such icons as Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Thad Jones, Mel Lewis, Woody Herman and Stan Kenton. It focuses on developing ensemble playing to a high standard, while grooving to classic big band repertoire. Legendary trumpeter Paddy Fitzallen has performed with luminaries including Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and Mel Tormé. This month he joins the WAYJO Swing Band to play a swinging set of classic big band tunes: the perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon! Click here for tickets

SUNDAY 5.30pm Aimee Francis

Singer, songwriter Aimee Francis was born with a passion for music. Receiving her first guitar at the ripe old age of 10 , this self-confessed ‘girl who rocks’ has been touring the world and drawing inspiration from rock acts who “write good emotive songs”. The rare performance that Aimee will showcase at The Ellington, will be a stripped back, 2 piece, acoustic warm-up to the WA leg of Aimee’s ‘Loser’s Game’ Australian Tour, to promote the release of her debut single by the same name. A tour that kicked off in early September by supporting P!NK at Allphones Arena, Sydney. Rubbing shoulders with the likes of P!NK is not Aimee’s first encounter with international, music heavyweights. Supporting artists such as Pat Benetar and Steel Panther, Aimee has graced the stages of the infamous Viper Room (LA), The Key Club, The Forum and Melbourne’s Corner Hotel in her hometown. This self-managed powerhouse recently relocated to Sydney following a whirlwind trip to the USA playing shows at the Whisky A Go-Go, around LA and then New York, finishing up with five shows at Austin’s South by South West Festival. A short week at The Ellington but certainly no shortage of talent with great shows from Chamber Jam (Tues), PJS (Wed) and Malmac (Thurs). Then into the weekend with two touring acts from Sydney, Briana Cowlishaw on Friday and Alex Gibson Saturday. Late sets from The Spread with Aaron Malone (Fri) and an all instrumental late show from Daniel Susnjar (Sat), then Gina Williams wraps up the weekend with a great Sunday session.

TUESDAY 7.00pm Chamber Jam

Chamber Jam at The Ellington is a night of chamber music in Perth like no other. Join some of Australia’s leading musicians in three outstanding ensembles performing in one of Perth’s most intimate live music venues. Featuring Adam Pinto - Adam performs regularly as a soloist, chamber musician, and with the Western Australian Symphony Orchestra. He has also been recorded for broadcast by the A.B.C. He has performed at many International Arts Festivals, including the Perth International Arts Festival, The Totally Huge New Music Festival, The Government House Ballroom series, and The Port Fairy Spring Classical Music Festival. A voice with a warm and silky timbre, lyrics that ooze honesty and contemplation and melodies that weave beautiful threads, Briana Cowlishaw is a Sydney raised vocalist and composer who has accomplished a large amount in her tender 24 years of age. Inspiration ranging from Nancy Wilson, The Beatles, Joni Mitchell, Ellis Regina, Fiona Apple, Ahmad Jamal and James Taylor, Briana’s approach to singing and composition is quite an intriguing one. Her unique creativity and ability as a performer, improviser and composer continues to cultivate new opportunities for the young vocalist and is paving a very exciting path for her career both in Australia and on an international front. Aaron Malone has been a part of Perth’s music community since 2003 when he began studies in Contemporary Music at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA). It was here that Aaron began to craft his vocal and performance skills with the dream of making a life out of music. After completing his studies in 2006, Aaron has been involved in various musical endeavours encompassing a range of musical genres and styles, including featuring for the Johannes Leubbers Dectet (jazz) and original funk band The Roast. Aaron has spent many hours investing into his passion and growing in his musical craft and is now beginning a new season as the solo artist Whisky Winter. Aaron is honoured to spend this evening at The Ellington and the opportunity to share his musical journey, influences and inspirations with you all. Yet that's exactly what Noongar singer-songwriter Gina Williams has been doing with audiences all over the world. You don't need to understand the words; love, loss, joy all mean the same things in anyone's language. Teaming up with her dear friend Guy Ghouse (Desert Child), Gina brings a modern take on an ancient tradition, merging evocative sounds, acoustic instruments and that incredible, beautiful voice. Help us usher in the long weekend with some fine music to soothe your soul. Song Lounge and The Music of Sting will kick off the week followed by the return of Gemma Farrell on Wednesday and the one and only Troy Roberts on Thursday. Then a weekend double from James Flynn with an all new rock swings show, a big grand final win from Fremantle on Saturday, rounded off with The Russell Holmes Trio on Sunday. Wrap that up with three late night shows to bring us into a relaxing Monday long weekend and The Ellington will enjoy a much needed day off!

Back by popular demand, the Sting show returns to the Ellington stage for an encore performance. Bassist Joe Southwell brings together some of Perth’s finest musicians to explore and reinterpret the musical workings of Sting. Journeying through famous hits from the Police era to some of his solo gems, this will be a magical evening of enchantment and subtlety. During his time as the bassist and lead singer of the Police and then his various ventures as a solo artist, Sting has continued to intrigue and surprise. His memorable music and engaging lyrics tell tales of love, charm, tragedy and adventure, leading to his recognition as one of the great songwriter’s of our time. WEDNESDAY 7.00pm Gemma Farrell Group

Saxophonist Gemma Farrell (nee Lutey) left Perth in 2008 after studying at WAAPA, to study at the Queensland Conservatorium where she completed her Bachelor of Music with Honours. This was followed by 3 years in Europe where she completed her Masters in Music at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. Before leaving Amsterdam she recorded and released two albums, "Vicissitude" with her septet, the Gemma Farrell Group, and "Get It Together" with her quartet, Say What?! Gemma is now back in Perth and on September 25 she will launch both of these albums with the help of some of Perth's finest musicians. Both albums will both be available to purchase at a special price. Now based in the USA, Australian saxophonist and composer Troy Roberts has had a busy few years. He represented Australia sharing the stage in an international septet comprised of jazz greats Wayne Shorter, Richard Bona, Vinnie Colaiuta, Zakir Hussein, Tineke Postma and Tarek Yamani for Herbie Hancock’s launch of the firstInternational Jazz Day celebration, at NYC’s UN General Assembly Hall, was the only Australian finalist in the 2008 Thelonious Monk Jazz Saxophone Competition, has received his first Grammy Nomination Medal, and has won 4 DownBeat jazz soloist awards. He's also shared the stage with many of his musical heroes such as Aretha Franklin, James Morrison, Jeff Tain Watts, Orrin Evans, Slide Hampton, Nicholas Payton, Lew Soloff, Ari Hoenig, Bobby Sparks, Sammy Figueroa and Stephen Scott to name a few. Currently celebrating his 5th release as a leader, Nu-Jive 5 (2013), Troy is currently based in New York City and continues to maintain a busy performance and recording schedule around the globe. Tonight, Troy will reconnect with some good friends to present an evening comprised of his favourite jazz standards and contemporary classics - with a twist here and there.. Seasoned vocalist Katherine Curnow is once again gracing The Ellington stage since returning from the UK but this time is teaming up with first-time Late Night Groover and good friend Tanaya Harper. Come join us in watching these fierce ladies pay homage to the independent women of the melodic world; armed with a plethora of feel-good and self-empowering funk, soul and pop tunes to keep you dancing all through the night. SUNDAY 5.30pm Russell Holmes Trio

Triple WAMI award winning Jazz Pianist, Russell Holmes has performed with many great jazz ensembles including MPS, Frames of Minds, The Ragabillys, Hip Mo Toast and artists such as Dale Barlow, Red Rodney and many others .Career highlights would include being invited to perform at the Celimontana Jazz Festival in Rome, Italy ( July2006 ) and supporting James Taylor at the infamous Leeuwin concert . Whilst being recorded on over 45 CD’s, in 2006 he released “One Evening”, a CD recorded with his regular trio at the time with Matt Willis and Danny Susnjar. This was launched in October 2006 . Russell’s most recent recording is a nationally released CD by the ABC Jazz label entitled Fire and Rain ‘THE JAMES TAYLOR PROJECT’( released 21st February 2009) which features the regular trio line-up performing eleven beautiful tracks of James Taylor songs. The Russell Holmes Trio has performed over 400 gigs in the past 10 years with residencies including the Inglewood Hotel, The Universal Bar, Clancy’s Fish Pubs, The University Club and Hotel Northbridge . The trio performs regularly at The Ellington and travelled to Melbourne in October 2012 in support of the release of 2 separate cd projects which are currently being recorded. It was awarded “Most Outstanding Jazz Group 2001” by the Perth Jazz Society and has continued to perform regularly since. Click here for tickets

Making their debut on the Ellington stage this Sunday before the LONG weekend are THE PHILLYHARMONICS - an 11-piece soul music ensemble featuring vintage keyboards, three-part backing vocal harmonies, funky horns and a STRING SECTION to bring you those sweet soul sounds, blaxploitation funk and disco strings! Don't miss the sensational new album release from Gian Slater and Jamie Oehlers - The Differences this weekend on Friday and Saturday evening. Now entering it’s fifth year, The Dilworths are heading into 2013 with a new lineup, new compositions and new recordings. The band began as an ensemble to workshop Eamon’s compositions and evolved into a high energy modern jazz group that has become a mainstay on the Sydney jazz scene with performances at leading venues 505, Jazzgroove and SIMA. Eamon is a 2010/2011 Young Australian of the Year Jazz Bell Awards nominee, 2007 James Morrison Scholarship Finalist and Umbria Jazz Berklee School top scholarship recipient. Two of Australia’s most recognised and awarded jazz talents, vocalist Gian Slater and saxophonist Jamie Oehlers, have been collaborating on various projects over the past 5 years. In February last year they entered the studio with their regular Melbourne based rhythm section of Paul Grabowsky, Ben Robertson and Dave Beck to record an album of Gian’s originals, as well as some of their uniquely arranged covers from artists as diverse as Paul Simon and Rodgers and Hart. This is a sublime album that combines their unique talents; Gian’s hauntingly beautiful, original and sometimes minimalistic voice and Jamie’s firebrand intensity and virtuosity. SATURDAY 10.30pm Late Night Groove Series presents Ladies Who Lead

‘Ladies Who Lead’ is a series of gigs dedicated to female vocalists that stand out front of an all-male band and together they get the dance floor grooving. Opening the series is one of WA's finest soul bands; the 'Amani Consort'. Soul sister Aysha Amani leads a stellar band featuring some of Perth's best musicians. These guys have laid down some of the smoothest grooves this city has ever seen. Let them lure you in with their sophisticated tunes and then get you moving with their tasty beats. Taking over for the late session will be one of Perth's best live liquid DnB bands; the 'Pimps of Sound Feat. Milly James'. The sleek Milly James glides like a swan over the top of the high energy liquid DnB that is the 'Pimps of Sound'. In the past two years these guys have done some amazing shows and surprised a lot of punters with their unique infectious dance rhythms. This will be a night to break out your serious dance moves, to have a lot of fun and to appreciate the awesome things that can happen when ladies lead. Swing doesn’t entirely describe the Hills Big Band (www.hillsbigband.com.au ). Sure they do the Basie and sometimes the Miller. And yes they do have two great vocalists to do the Sinatra and the Billie Holiday. The kicker is in the arrangements; with maestro Kieran Hurley at the helm, they have scoured the planet for the hip. Leaving no stone unturned, they bring you arrangements of numbers by the likes of Chick Corea, Charlie Mingus, Horace Silver, and Brian Setzer. From their humble beginnings in the far flung reaches of the Perth Hills, this band has advanced pretty rapidly, last year filling the Midland town hall and featuring in the at the Northbridge Sunday Piazza Live series. She relocated to Edinburgh over ten years ago and returns for a weekend of shows at The Ellington with husband and trombonist Chris Greive. We are also delighted to host two groups from Sydney this week including the Sydney Conservatorium Jazz Orchestra (with special guest Bert Joris) on Tuesday and "a new force for urban roots and Reggae music" The Strides on Wednesday. We also have the sensational singer Aaron Malone with different groups for the late set on Friday and Saturday. Then rounding out the weekend will be Dare to Live from Sonja D'anne vocal studions, followed by final year WAAPA student Sarah Ramsey. And don't forget the fantastic pianist Jangoo Chapkana will be celebrating his birthday with a big show this evening. Head down to The Ellington this week to catch a taste of some fantastic music.

The Jangoo Chapkhana Trio swings into action at The Ellington in 2013. This is their fourth appearance at what is Perth's premier venue for top-quality live jazz. Joined by long-time musical collaborators Murray Wilkins (bass) and Dennis Vrcic (drums), this is one night of jazz in 2013 that simply cannot be missed. Featuring European Big Band Luminary, BERT JORIS as guest soloist and composer Belgian based super composer, Bert Joris teams up with one of Australia’s leading youth jazz orchestra’s for it’s maiden national tour. This is the first large scale touring project for a Conservatorium jazz orchestra in decades, and to distinguish this occasion and re-affirm its educational and artistic mission, the CJO has invited one of Europe’s leading composers and trumpeters Bert Joris, to be their very special guest. Belgian based trumpeter and composer Bert Joris, enjoys an international reputation as one of Europe’s most accomplished practioners of Jazz Orchestral Music. Hailed by critics as “evocative, majestic, dynamic and scintillating”, Joris is best known for his work with the amazing Brussels Jazz Orchestra, Joe Lovano and iconic Belgian Guitarist, Phillip Catherine. A winner of several prestigious European prizes, including the “DJANGO D’OR” and 1998 critics choice European trumpeter of the year, Joris has appeared with The Village Vanguard Orchestra, Enrico Pieranunzi, ”Michel Herr European Quintet”and the “Philippe Aerts quartet”, “Amsterdam Jazz5tet”, Jesse Van Ruller, Joe Haider, Wolfgang Haffner, Rob van Bavel, Lew Tabakin, Hein van de Gein, Marc Moulin to name but a few. Hailing from Sydney, THE STRIDES have become a new force for urban roots music. Fronted by Reggae Master Ras Roni from Barbados via London, and Fijian MC LTL GZEUS, The Strides have delivered their classic sound to crowds across the country, delivering a musical experience that is as powerfully explosive as it is authentic. With a calling card of powerfully melodic horns, infectious bass lines, easy musings and a magnetic stage presence between its two lead vocalists, the Strides are an 8-piece collective of multi-talented songwriters and musicians. Perth jazz fans will remember Becc as Elizabeth Sanderson of the Sweet Blue Midnights. Her return to the Ellington marks only her second Perth performance season since relocating to Edinburgh in 2000. During that time, Becc has amassed some impressive performance credits, including concerts at the Royal Glasgow Concert Hall and Edinburgh’s Usher Hall with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra's Big Band, a headline performance at the Shetland Jazz Festival, and original performances at the 2011 and 2012 Edinburgh International Fringe Festivals. These intimate shows will reunite Becc with some old friends, to perform songs by artists who have influenced her successful international career. With music from greats including Dinah Washington, Judy Garland, Doris Day, Carmen McRae and Joni Mitchell, these shows promise a glimpse into the inspirations behind one of Perth’s favourite home-grown talents. Mark Wilkinson headlines this week at The Ellington

This week we have four shows already sold out including three from the fantastic singer/songwriter Mark Wilkinson and one from The Growl as part of their national tour. Apologies for the sold out shows but a reminder that upstairs is usually available and to book shows early to avoid disappointment. Other highlights include the EP Launch for Holly Norman this evening, popular local singer/songwriter Helen Shanahan with China Doll on Tuesday, the dynamic Mace Francis Orchestra with guests Garry Lee and Roger Garrood on Wednesday and the ever popular soul revue from Melody Itzstein (Whittle) and Howie Morgan on Thursday. Wrap out the weekend with a couple of late shows featuring Matt Allen on Friday and Samba Social Club on Saturday and we are set for another amazing week of music at The Ellington.

MONDAY 7.00pm Holly Norman EP Launch

Holly Norman is a Western Australian songstress who draws on her classical music background and percussive inclinations to create songs that reflect the Alice in Wonderland in all of us. After years spent playing professionally as a percussionist, Holly began to combine a vivid imagination and her natural gift for catchy folk-pop melodies to create beautiful, and thought-provoking songs for listeners to fall in love with. This special performance will herald the release of her debut EP, 'Hollypop', successfully crowdfunded via Pozible, and will boast a full band line-up of excellent local musicians and horn arrangements for Holly's songs. TUESDAY 7.00pm Helen Shanahan

After launching her debut album ‘Driftwood’ in October 2012, popular local talent Helen Shanahan is ready to take her songs on a mini tour of Perth, Sydney and Melbourne. The first leg of her tour will be at The Ellington. The eight-track album, recorded at the prestigious Crank Recording Studio in Northbridge, is a culmination of Helen’s observations and musings in recent years translated into lyrics which ride the sorrow of love and life and draw the listener into a heartfelt world of story and melody. The title track has just seen Helen win first place in the ‘folk’ category in the international Song of the Year songwriting contest, and a nomination in the 2012 WAM Song of the Year competition in the ‘love’ category. An incredible band made up of WAAPA graduates will back Helen on the night, and starting off the evening will be CHINA DOLL. Click here for tickets

WEDNESDAY 7.00pm The Perth Jazz Society presents The Collaboratory featuring MFO and Garry Lee

Mace Francis Orchestra + Garry Lee + Roger Garrood. This months exciting collaboration will see one of Perth’s most engaging ensembles, the Mace Francis Orchestra, augmented with guitarist/vibraphonist Garry Lee and saxophone grandmaster Roger Garrood. Formed in 2004 by Mace, MFO is one of Australia’s leading contemporary big bands and has performed throughout the country several times. Garry Lee has forged a reputation as both a formidable guitarist and vibraphonist, studying internationally on a Churchill Fellowship and supporting Wynton Marsalis on his Australian tour in 1990. After working the big band scene throughout Europe in the 1960′s Roger Garrood migrated to Australia in 1971 and has since taught and influenced just about every musician to come out of Perth. He has performed with Ray Charles, Natalie Cole and Shirley Bassey, to name but a few. This rare performance will feature Garry’s original work arranged by Mace and is not to be missed. FRIDAY 7.00pm The Growl Australian Tour - SOLD OUT.

The Growl are Cameron Avery – Vocals, Clinton Oliver – Guitar, James Ireland – Keys/ accordion/ samples, Marc Earley – Double bass, Michael Jelinek – Drums/ percussion and Samuel Kuzich – Drums/ percussion. The Growl’s Douse The Lamps National Tour kicks of this September and caps off a huge year of national and international success for the band. Douse The Lamps is the third track to be taken from the band’s debut LP What Would Christ Do?? and will be released digitally on Friday 16th August through MGM. In true The Growl style front-man and songwriter Cameron Avery hides the track’s subtle sexual core beneath layers of hand claps and raw percussion. Douse The Lamps follows on from the success of the debut LP, that saw The Growl debut as the seventh most added artist on the USA College Radio charts and spend six weeks in the top 200. Their recent support tour with Tame Impala through the USA and Canada has proven to be the perfect launch pad for the band who have won a plethora of new fans and drew them glowing reviews for their sets from critics in attendance. FRIDAY 10.30pm The Spread featuring Matt Allen

He began his musical training at WAAPA in the Classical Department but after two years reauditioned successfully for the Contemporary Music course where his true passion lied. He began writing a lot more, gigging a lot more (at all of Perth's best venues including Hyatt Regency, Sheraton Hotel, The Ellington Jazz Club, Burswood Resort) and gaining a lot more knowledge and experience. It was at the culmination of his degree at the end of four more years that Matt had written, arranged, produced and peformed an 8 track albums worth of material entitled "Over". He was also awarded the "Most Outstanding Contemporary Music Student" at WAAPA in his final year. 2012 brings a year full of hope. Matt has carved himself into an experienced, versatile and soulful performer having drawn on major influences such as Stevie Wonder, D'angelo, Justin Timberlake, Daniel Merriweather and Donny Hathaway to mould him into the vocalist and songwriter he is today. Matt's debut album, "Over", is now available after being re-mixed and mastered by the incredible Lee Buddle at Crank Studios, Perth. The future looks bright for one of Australia's best young talents. Timber and Steel Presents - Mark Wilkinson ‘Let The River Run’ Album Tour with special guest Little Bighorn. Mark Wilkinson presents his long awaited sophomore album ‘LetThe River Run’. Following on from his debut ‘Truth Came Running’, which after two years still sits in the iTunes Singer/Songwriter charts, ‘Let The River Run’ captures that same soulful voice that’s seen Mark sell a remarkable 40,000 records independently. Well regarded as one of Western Australia’s most talented and respected professional jazz vocalists, Ali Bodycoat has established herself as an unrivalled force in the local jazz industry. A regular feature at The Ellington Jazz Club, Ali performs sold-out shows with the Ali Bodycoat Quintet. Chosen to support Marcia Hines in her 2008 concert at The Vines, Ali has also supported Vince Jones, Grace Knight and David Campbell and continues to work alongside some of Perth’s greatest Jazz musicians, such as world-renowned Perth export and Grammy nominated saxophonist, Troy Roberts and international Perth born artists, Graham Wood and Matt Jodrell. In March, Ali performed with The West Australian Symphony Orchestra for their Tribute to The Movies concert. In 2010, Ali created and performed two sold-out seasons of Minor Major Marlene Downstairs At The Maj – (Cabaret Carnivale), a dedication to Marlene Dietrich, and at The Ellington Jazz Club and in 2011, Ali performed and created Franklin – The Music of Aretha Franklin, again to sold out seasons Downstairs at His Maj and The Ellington. (Recently presented again at the Quarry Amphitheatre). Ali was thrilled to be a part of the inaugural Perth International Jazz Festival 2013. Jade’s immersion in such a wide range of music has given her voice and unmistakable individual sound, which is both sweet but powerful. This is a show not to be missed. Why Georgia?' is one of the newest up and coming sensations to emerge out of Perth. 19 year old Georgia Reed's career took to a new level when she appeared on Season 1 of the highly anticipated phenomenon 'The Voice Australia' in 2012. Georgia has captured audiences over the years with the uniqueness of her voice, full of soul and warm timbre tones, reflecting that of a seasoned artist beyond her years. Now as part of the trio 'Why Georgia?' she is joined by the talented Chris Mackenzie (18) on guitar and Kim Thair (18) on keyboard/ guitar. The trio formed in 2012 and perform regularly at Perth's classiest venues. Their fan base has continued to grow at a rapid pace regularly drawing new faces to every gig. Jade–Lori Crompton, daughter of Stax recording artist C L Blast's (known for his work on songs such as; Buster Brown's "Fannie Mae"; Don Gardner/Dee Dee Ford's "I Need Your Lovin'", Gladys Knight's "You Broke Your Promise" and the (fantastic) "Valerie" by Jackie & The Starlites). John Bannister has been performing in the Perth music scene for more than 25 years as Trumpet player & Vocalist. For the past 10 years he has been fronting the Charisma Brothers performing cool jazz and blues. With residencies of 10 years and counting around Perth and beyond, the Charisma Brothers are bringing their unique blend of cool and sophistication back to the city. Renowned for it’s outstanding music program, Hale has more than 500 boys playing a musical instrument and a jazz program with about 80 students playing in 6 groups. The Ellington is delighted to offer these talented young jazz musicians the opportunity to perform on a stage that has seen the likes of George Garzone and Joe Lovano perform. Anea Duratovic and Ashley de Neef Present ESPERANZAGANZA: A Tribute to the Music of Esperanza Spalding. Grammy Award winning jazz bassist and vocalist Esperanza Spalding has achieved a lot in her very short career. By the age of 28, Esperanza has become the first jazz musician to win the Grammy Award for Best New Artist, the youngest member of faculty at Berkeley College of Music (age 20), and has worked with such seminal artists such as Joe Lovano, Pat Metheny, Wayne Shorter and Bobby McFerrin. Tonight will feature a selection from Esperanza’s last three albums. NY vocalist and adopted Australian, Alison Wedding returns to present her music with long time musical colleague, saxophonist Jamie Oehlers. Alison Wedding started her music career at age two, singing for family and friends in the living room. But it was not until she walked into a jazz ensemble at her fine arts high school in Dallas, Texas, that she was first introduced to jazz. She went on to study jazz at University of North Texas under the guidance of Paris Rutherford and began to sing professionally in the Dallas area. Upon receiving her degree, Alison moved to Los Angeles to further develop her career. After moving to Australia in January 2001, in addition to teaching at major music schools in Melbourne, she was fortunate to play with many truly amazing musicians, including Sam Keevers, Jamie Oehlers, Colin Hopkins, Peter Knight, Bob Sedergreen, Joe Chindamo, Kate Ceberano, Richard Clapton, just to name a few. Alison's first solo CD, "The Secret", was released in September 2003 on the ABC Jazz label. She toured Australia celebrating this release, and shortly thereafter, The Secret went on to win the 2004 Bell Award for the Best Vocal Jazz Album in Australia. Alison moved back to the US in 2007, choosing NY as her new base to continue on her musical journey...She has performed at various venues, including Rockwood Music Hall, Cornelia St. Cafe, and The 55 Bar as both a solo artist and background singer. Her current band lineup is Snarky Puppy leader Michael League (bass), Ross Pederson (drums), and Pete McCann (guitar). Alison still has a deep passion for teaching voice and improvisation, and is an assistant professor in the voice faculty at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Her new album, “This Dance”, featuring strings and special guests Chris Potter, Lionel Loueke, and Theo Bleckann, was released on the GroundUP label (Ropeadope) in May 2012. Alison has been touring with Snarky Puppy as one of their support acts since her latest album release, and returned to Australia opening for Snarky Puppy for the Melbourne International Jazz Festival in June 2013. FRIDAY 10.30pm The SPREAD featuring Kat Curnow

Manila-born, Perth-raised singer Katherine Curnow began singing at the age of seven. In 2008, after completing a degree in PR and Journalism, Katherine was accepted into the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) for Contemporary Music and during this time she rediscovered her love, passion for singing and place in the world. Finally taking music seriously, she maintained a heavy performance and teaching schedule, including regular performances at The Ellington Jazz Club. In 2011, Katherine relocated to London to pursue a music career in the UK and has since performed as a backing vocalist at Bush Hall, The Troubadour and Bloomsbury Ballroom for fellow Australian singer/songwriter Kirsty Keogh, as well as playing in her duo for her Thursday night residency and various venues and events around London. She has now returned to Perth armed with an array of musical influences and tricks up her sleeve. Katherine’s sultry and soulful vocals are drawn from her deep rooted love of soul, jazz, blues, R&B and hip hop music; heavily influenced by artists such as Donny Hathaway, D’angelo, Erykah Badu, Al Green, Jill Scott, Lauryn Hill and Stevie Wonder. Reilly, born and bred in Western Australia has been singing and playing the guitar from a young age. He has ventured in most music avenue’s. From teenage bands, to duo performances to finally a solo direction with his music. Teaming up with his best friend managing him, Reilly has gone from strength to strength. Reilly Craig plays acoustic guitar, drums, piano and stomp box. His songs are both penned musically and lyrically by himself and sometimes with friends. Singing at nearly every Open Mic he could, Reilly has now been played on Triple J and is a regular act at places like Wolf Lane and The Aviary. He's ventured musically in just about every avenue possible. From bands to duo's to solo work. He's an acoustic, pop artist with a Sunday sesh vibe. Despite the fact that Reilly has never released an EP or Album, he has still had success with his 'Garage Band' recorded songs. 'Downfall' has had multiple plays on Triple J Radio 'Roots N All'. Reilly has also performed at the biggest venue in Perth - The Perth Arena, as Pre & Half time entertainment for the NBL games multiple times to crowds reaching 15,000. Reilly has just finished recording the debut album 'Two Hearts' which has a September released date penned. What started out as a simple singer songwriter playing an acoustic guitar playing at Open Mic Nights, has grown to a loop pedal artist playing in some of Perth’s most respected venues. Help MFO say farewell and good luck to tenor saxophonist Sean Little before he heads off to New York to study. Sean has been an integral part of MFO since 2009 and is a regular featured soloist with the band. Tonights performance will put Sean in the spotlight. The Mace Francis Orchestra (MFO) was formed late in 2005 to experiment with composition, in the style of the great modern big bands lead by Bob Brookmeyer, Thad Jones, Bill Holman and Maria Schneider. The result has been the coming together of 14 of Perth’s finest musician’s and composers to create exciting new music for big band. Over the last 8 years MFO has recorded 5 CDs, toured nationally four times and performed with international jazz artists, Jim Pugh (USA), Jon Gordon (NY), John Hollenbeck (USA), Theo Bleckmann (NY), Ed Partyka (GER) and Satoko Fujii (JAP). We have a huge week of music this week with 15 incredible shows. US trombonist George Murphy will be a treat tonight for lovers of mainstream Jazz, Melbourne guitarist Steve Magnusson will be in residence Thursday and Friday night, the wonderful singer Allira Wilson returns after a year in Melbourne for one show only on Friday night, the exciting Melbourne ensemble BLOW will be playing the main set Saturday followed by the return of Tiaryn who has also relocated to Melbourne. BUT WAIT - there's more, with four more shows from A Saucy Little Secret, a Beyonce tribute with Cristal Phillips, PJS Collaboratory, Night Cap shows, and the fantastic Rick Webster on Sunday.

MONDAY 7.00pm George Murphy (USA) and the Gavin Kerr Trio

This August George has been invited to Perth to perform with the WAAPA Big Band, adjudicate for the W.A. School's Jazz Festival and to be an Artist in Residence at Hale School's Music Department. Oh.......and to swing up a storm at the Ellington with the Gavin Kerr Trio! George (vocals and trombone) will be backed by Gavin Kerr on drums, Ookii Effendi on piano and Danny Moss Jnr on Bass. This trio has performed regularly at the Ellington to sold out crowds and always entertains with their brand of swinging jazz. The group will also be joined by some special (secret) guests on the night. If you love the music of Frank Sinatra and the crooners, if you love the silky tones of the trombone (who doesn't?), if you love that broad Bostonian accent then you should leave your slippers in the cupboard, grab your "going out shoes" and get down to the Ellington for a night of swinging standards. HMS PopUp Productions’ A Saucy Little Secret, is a masterful piece of cabaret theatre by Melanie Bainbridge, following the lives of five strong women whose music and attitudes influenced the development of modern blues, queer lifestyle and racial tolerance. Famous not only for their music, but also for their progressive and alternative attitudes to sexuality, race issues and relationships, Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith, Gladys Bentley, Ethel Waters and Alberta Hunter, all broke into the music scene through the buffet flats and rent houses of Harlem, but rose to be successful and wealthy recording artists in their own right. Five of Australia’s premier jazz, soul and blues musicians and tremendous actors come together to share their untold stories. Stephen Magnusson is one of the most accomplished, versatile and distinctive musicians in Australia. His incredible technique and astoundingly beautiful tone on his instrument have made him an indispensable part of many bands and film scores. Magnusson has performed/recorded with many National and international artists including Chalie Haden’s Music Liberation Orchestra, Meshell Ndegeocello, Rickie-lee Jones, Tim Berne, George Garzone, Jim Black, Paul Grabowsky, Vince Jones, Australian Art Orchestra, Katie Noonan, Christine Sullivan, Michelle Nicole, Assumptions Trio, Megan Washington, Paul Kelly, SNAG, Mike Nock, Enrico Rava, Arthur Blythe and many others. Stephen was awarded the Swiss Diagonal Arts Grant and the Pop Kredit award in 1999, Co-Winner of 2000 National Jazz Award, nominated for the Freedman Fellowship twice and the Melbourne Prize in 07. Vocalist Allira Wilson finally returns to Perth after moving to Melbourne a year ago, in a special concert that will feature the incredible Melbourne guitarist Steve Magnusson and home town jazz fly in fly out-er, Jamie Oehlers. Allira Wilson is quickly emerging as one of Australia’s greatest young talents, whose musical approach has been described as “brave and raw as it is supple and intricate”. SUNDAY 8.00pm Rick Webster

Rick Webster is a guitarist from Perth , Western Australia , After graduating from the Academy of Performing arts with both a Bachelor in Jazz Music and an Advanced Diploma of Contemporary music , Rick has gone on to become one of the hardest working guitarists in Perth. He is the recent winner of the international John Lennon songwriting Competition in the Jazz Category and a finalist in the American Songwriting Competition in 2012. Rick has been releasing his own material since 2011 and his 2 EP's : "Rick Webster" and "The Rick Webster Project" featuring vocalist Allira Wilson have received critical acclaim and seen him nominated for awards from the West Australian Music Industry and win international songwriting competitions. Tonight will be a showcase of this material paired with recently commissioned work for ABC national radio as well as all new music written for the evening. The show will feature original vocalist Allira Wilson who is in Perth for a limited time before returning to Melbourne. A Saucy Little Secret continue to scandalise Perth AGAIN!!! with a wonderful show that tells the stories of five female Jazz icons - Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith, Gladys Bentley, Ethel Waters and Alberta Hunter. Make sure you get down for one of three early shows this week. On top of this treat, we have our monthly Classical music offering tonight with the ever popular Chamber Jam featuring three fine ensembles. Tal Cohen is another Perth musician to make the move to the University of Miami to further his studies, and his farewell gig is on this Wednesday at 8.00pm. Blues/Soul veterans Continental Robert and Tanya-Lee Davies join us Thursday as well as the return of Abbey/Foster/Falle on Saturday. And there is much more fantastic music performed by fantastic musicians so catch a show or two this week at The Ellington.

WEDNESDAY 8.00pm Tal Cohen Quartet

Don't miss the much anticipated return of Tal and his quartet as they perform a selection of tunes and arrangements, including Cohen’s own promising and innovative original work. Tal’s unique piano style has its roots in Jewish folk songs and classical music, which he played from a young age growing up in Israel. After relocating to Perth at the age of 16, he took up a music scholarship at Churchlands Senior High School and later pursued studies in jazz improvisation at the prestigious Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. Many national and international jazz icons recognize his improvisational and technical expertise, including George Garzone, who Cohen performed with in August. One of Australia’s most soulful singers and legendary harmonica players, his onstage presence is contagious and high energy in the tradition of the old Soul revues in the US around the late 60’s. TANYA-LEE DAVIES hails from Perth but jumped a freight train to Melbourne where she immediately formed a combo to satisfy her love affair with the R&B, country/gospel girl singers circa 1950/60. Aaron Malone has been a part of Perth’s music community since 2003 when he began studies in Contemporary Music at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA). It was here that Aaron began to craft his vocal and performance skills with the dream of making a life out of music. After completing his studies in 2006, Aaron has been involved in various musical endeavours encompassing a range of musical genres and styles, including featuring for the Johannes Leubbers Dectet (jazz) and original funk band The Roast. Aaron has spent many hours investing into his passion and growing in his musical craft and is now beginning a new season as a solo artist. Fresh off their sold-out and critically acclaimed performance at the inaugural Perth International Jazz Festival, powerhouse trio ABBEY | FOSTER | FALLE return to the Ellington stage for an encore launch of their debut album: BROTHERHOOD (Newmarket Music). Formed in 2007, this WAMi Award-winning trio is an exciting collaboration between bassist Nick Abbey, pianist Chris Foster, and drummer Ben Falle. Together, they have carved out a reputation for exceptional and engaging live shows, and are well known for their innovative compositions, identifiable group sound, and fresh takes on jazz standards (and a few pop tunes!). The group melds the distinct musical personalities of each of its members into a coherent blend, taking influence from the likes of Avishai Cohen, Brad Mehldau, e.s.t, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Aaron Goldberg, and Perth’s own Johannes Luebbers Dectet. The night will feature many of the tracks from the album, as well as a few brand new compositions and a selection of the trio’s favourite music. For musically talented Barossa Valley local, Sam Brittain, story-telling is exactly that. Since releasing his debut LP ‘Our Shining Skin’ on June 1, 2012, the path to success for the gifted and independent musician has transformed into a never-ending road. In 2013, Sam is an unstoppable, roots, folk and blues artist, reminiscent of sounds such as Glen Hansard, Damien Rice and Ryan Adams. Sam’s lead single ‘Bruises’ hit #1 on the Triple J Unearthed Roots Chart on New Year’s Eve, 2012/13, where it consolidated its lead for a consecutive four weeks, peaking at #6 in the Overall Top 100. Following a successful and memorable stint supporting breakthrough artist Matt Corby’s Secret Garden tour in December 2011 Sam recently supported UK folk sensation PASSENGER at two SOLD OUT shows at Melbourne’s iconic Athenaeum Theatre. This August George has been invited to Perth to perform with the WAAPA Big Band, adjudicate for the W.A. School's Jazz Festival and to be an Artist in Residence at Hale School's Music Department. Oh.......and to swing up a storm at the Ellington with the Gavin Kerr Trio! George (vocals and trombone) will be backed by Gavin Kerr on drums, Ookii Effendi on piano and Danny Moss Jnr on Bass. This trio has performed regularly at the Ellington to sold out crowds and always entertains with their brand of swinging jazz. The group will also be joined by some special (secret) guests on the night. If you love the music of Frank Sinatra and the crooners, if you love the silky tones of the trombone (who doesn't?), if you love that broad Bostonian accent then you should leave your slippers in the cupboard, grab your "going out shoes" and get down to the Ellington for a night of swinging standards. Head on down to Perth's favourite live music for another fantastic week of music. Kicking off this evening with Song Lounge featuring some wonderful loczl talent. Tuesday we welcome back Chris Greive from Scotland for a special one off show. Wednesday sees the fabulous WAAPA Music theatre students and Thursday we welcome back Prita for a great show following her relocation to Berlin. The weekend features a great new show from James Flynn and Chelsea Gibson entitled "Gotta be Gatsby". The name says it all so head down for all things 1920's this weekend. Another very special feature is the start of the run of shows on Sunday from "A Saucy Little Secret Set to Scandalise Perth AGAIN".

Since moving to Edinburgh in 2000, trombonist Chris Greive has worked extensively throughout the UK & Europe as professional musician, educator & soloist. Having been the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra lead trombonist for over 10yrs Chris has graced the stage with legends such as; John Scofield, Dave Liebman, Kurt Elling (also as arranger) & Randy Brecker among many others. Greives abilities across a number of styles have ensured a varied & exciting output. His time in Perth during 2013 will see collaborations with the best of Perth's globetrotting musicians who are old friends & constant inspirations – Jamie Oehlers on saxophones, Tal Cohen on piano, Peter Jeavons on bass and Ben Vanderwal on drums. Mat Jodrell headlines this week at The Ellington

The maestro Mat Jodrell is back this week for a range shows including gigs with Carl Mackey Wednesday, Daniel Susnjar (Thursday) and leading a big band (Friday and Saturday). In addition to this musical treat, we welcome the debut show from Premiss (Tuesday), the return of Katherine Curnow from the UK (Saturday) and an encore performance of Gospel Extravaganza (Sunday). Premiss is a recently formed quintet featuring some of WAAPA's finest recently graduated talent. One of the outstanding fresh new voices in Jazz today. Originally born in Perth, Western Australia, Mat is now based in New York City where he recently completed his Masters and Artist Diploma degrees at the prestigious Juilliard School of Music. Mat is featured on numerous recordings, released and toured his debut record ‘Blues In The Night’, and toured extensively throughout the world. Since moving to New York Mat has had the opportunity to perform with Benny Golson, Ron Carter, Branford Marsalis, James Spaulding, Carl Allen, Terence Blanchard, Josh Roseman and many others. Tuesday night you can bid farewell to the Soulman - Solomon Pitt - who has been at the backbone of our late night groove series shows for a couple of years. Great music Wednesday with a double bill from Sydney's Dave Jackson and Lewis Moody's "Career Advice". Then WAYJO return with a fantastic tribute to Ella Fitzgerald and Count Basie. Cosmology is the study of the Universe, Ontology is the study of the nature of things, Cosmontology is the study of the nature of the study of the universe and it's also the name of Dave Jackson's debut release under his own name. Acclaimed alto saxophonist Dave Jackson (Sydney) was a finalist in the 2010 National Jazz Saxophone Awards. You may know Shameem’s voice from her track “Turn It On” which has been featured in a major advertising campaign all over Western Australian primetime TV. Born in Australia to a Chinese-Malaysian father and an Iranian mother, this bubbly vocalist and songwriter enchants her audiences with her heartfelt, personal stories and spiritual influences in her songs. Shameem currently has a track nominated for the Independent Music Awards, and is recently returned from touring the USA and Canada where she performed at Canadian Music Festival. Her music often is compared to that of such artists as Alicia Keys and Sade. To see what all the fuss is about, check out Shameem as she presents an evening of her unique concoction of soul, R&B and jazz with her hard-grooving band. Matt Allen was one of the first students to graduate from the Bachelor of Contemporary Music at “The Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts”. But not only did he graduate with flying colours, he received the award for overall top student of the year in 2010. Matt is a regular performer on the local music scene and has entertained in a number of Perth’s leading bands. from smooth jazz to soulful funk, Matt can do it all. In 2010, Matt released his debut solo album “Over” at the Ellington Jazz Club to a sold out crowd. This album was written, produced, engineered and mixed by Matt proving he is a well rounded and established musician of the highest calibre. As well as being a talented songwriter, Matt is also the managing director of Keogh Music School in Subiaco. It is here that he co-ordinates the schools music program as well as teaching singing and piano. Matt’s vocal charm and charismatic energy makes him a favourite amongst this thriving music industry. SATURDAY 7.00pm Juliana Areias - Metropolis Show

Juliana Areias – who is an unconditional fan of Jobim and also originally from Sao Paulo – expresses her pride for her home city in this new concert “Metropolis” which celebrates “paulista” artists and musicians and their love for what was known in the words of Eduardo Gudin in the song “Paulista”, “the whole world in one single city.” Juliana Areias, Marcio Mendes, Ben Vanderwall, Adam Springhetti and special guests will present a repertoire featuring songs such as “Sampa”, a northeastern read on Sao Paulo, “Trem das onze”, a light hearted samba classic that reflects the day to day of the outskirts of Sao Paulo in the 60’s, especially the Italian migrants from Barra Funda and Bras; Familia gangster ska (Rap), “Sao Paulo, Sao Paulo” – a Brazilian parody of “New York, New York” from the band Premeditando o breque. “When I think about Sao Paulo, I think about this sarcastic humour which I believe is one of the best humour of Brazil such as Rita Lee, Titans, Ultraje a rigor, Mamonas Assassinas. The Christ Church Grammar School Music Department is proud to present the annual CCGS Jazz Night at Ellington Jazz Club, Beaufort St, Northbridge at 7.00pm, Monday July 1st 2013. A virtuosic pianist and accordionist, Cathie Travers has had a diverse career that has taken her through a multitude of musical styles, from jazz and tango right through to contemporary and avant-garde new music. Joining her on guitar will be Perth's 'gentleman of jazz', Ray Walker. Migrating to Australia in 1960, Ray has been a key figure in the West Australian jazz scene for decades. Completing the trio will be Karl Florrison on bass. Karl has emerged over the past few years as one of Perth's most in demand bassists and is well versed in many kinds of music. The Perth Jazz Society presents a night of original music with the Andrew Gioia Quartet feat. Tom O'Halloran. The quartet, comprised of Gioia, Tom O'Halloran, Karl Florrison and Bronton Ainsworth will be playing all new original compositions by the leader, and experiments with dramatic contrasts in texture and blurring the line between composition and improvisation. Originating from a musical theatre background in NZ, Ceelay made the move to Australia to pursue a musical career. From modern swinging jazz through to ambient slow landscapes. Use of electronics that morph and become burning fast jazz tempos. Intricate Latin influenced compositions slow down to become intimate ballads. Such practice is commonplace for three musical brothers that have built an intriguing creative language between them via countless performances. Now audiences are starting to take notice how extremely listenable and melodic their sound is - while also fuelled with very strong grooves and a live emotional intensity. Ali Bodycoat has been performing professionally in the Jazz scene throughout venues in Western Australia since 1995 with her Trio, Quartet and Quintet. Ali has performed at the Perth Jazz Society, Jazz Fremantle, Perth and Fremantle Festivals and worked consistently in Musical Theatre with yellow glass theatre inc since studying at the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts in 2002. Ali has held a trio residency with Graham Wood and other venerable Perth Jazz musicians such as Sam Anning, Dane Alderson and Carl Mackey at the Subiaco Hotel for thirteen years, supported Vince Jones, Grace Knight and Marcia Hynes and consistently works with the state’s top Jazz Musicians.

Fresh from their debut on the Ellington Stage, Why Georgia? is welcomed back to the main stage for your Saturday Late Night Groove! 'Why Georgia?' is one of the newest up and coming sensations to emerge out of Perth. 19 year old Georgia Reed's career took to a new level when she appeared on Season 1 of the highly anticipated phenomenon 'The Voice Australia' in 2012. Georgia has captured audiences over the years with the uniqueness of her voice, full of soul and warm timbre tones, reflecting that of a seasoned artist beyond her years. Sarah McLeod grew to fame as the lead singer of one of this country’s most iconic rock bands – The Superjesus and has become one of Australia’s most diverse and powerhouse songwriters and performers - multi award winning, double platinum selling, and all-round media favourite. Cementing herself as one of the country’s great rock chicks, she has continued to carve a name for herself within the international spotlight. Fuelled by a musical curiosity, recent highlights in her career have seen her become a revered artist, performer, songwriter, and producer, who can comfortably nestle in amongst the realms of genres of rock, pop, and dance, acoustic on a global scale. 2012 - Sarah spent most of the last 12 months touring the country with her sublime acoustic show, and launched another project – Screaming Bikini – debut album is out now on iTunes. Sarah was invited to perform at the Playboy Mansion in Hollywood where she performed a few Screaming Bikini tracks. Another dance collaboration with Italian DJ/Producer EDX saw her jet off to Las Vegas to shoot the video clip for the song ‘Falling Out Of Love’; as well as the current track The Real Thing with I Am Sam – getting played on MTV and Nova networks nationally. Winner of the 2013 Bell Award for Young Australian Jazz Artist of the Year, Steve Barry has quickly made a name for himself as an accomplished pianist, improviser and composer since moving to Sydney from New Zealand in 2009. Demonstrating a natural creative flair, technical facility and artistic maturity, Steve forms a part of the new generation of young Australasian artists exploring both the jazz tradition and modern approaches to improvisation and creative music. The Seals - A boisterous blend of country blues and bluegrass. The Seals burst onto the music scene less than three years ago with a series of raucous and rollicking shows. The band gained a dedicated following playing their own blend of country blues and bluegrass. Neil Sedaka & Frank Sinatra - from the far reaches of candy pop doo-wop to suave sounds of sumptuous swing (respectively). Not the most common of musical couplings that one could expect, yet the musical mastery of both presents a new blend of music that forms a delectable repertoire of irresistible American song. Lead by vocalist Trent White and his band of merry men, (including a very special guest) join this evenings show for a night of pure fun, toe-tapping delights and a once in a 'Blue Moon' mergence of these great songs from two distinctly different yet captivating artists. James Flynn was born in Scotland but today he is a true citizen of the world. He is based in Perth, Western Australia, but grew up in Glasgow. The two cities could not be further apart geographically. James’ vocal talent, his personality and sense of humour has ensured that he has made many friends all over the world and secured the support of a dedicated and loyal fan base wherever he has performed. I've recorded seven albums to date, the last four recorded in Perth, Western Australia. I still think it incredible that Perth, the most isolated city in the world, can produce such world class musicians. I consider myself very fortunate to have worked with such a magnificent pool of local talent over the last decade. Tim Jago - Guitars, Dane Alderson - Bass, Ben Vanderwal - Drums. In Australia the suburban lounge room generally gets a bad wrap. It is accused of being the setting for slovenly THC induced inaction or the crime scene of murdered hours in front of video games or even as the complicit venue for screenings of television programs of which the honorable inventors of said apparatus were to watch now, they would cringe in shame. However there is a small unassuming lounge room in Glendalough, Perth, Australia that has stripped itself of all stigma and been reinvented as an incubator for new music. The Grid began it's days in this lounge room. Here guitarist Tim Jago, bassist Dane Alderson and drummer Ben Vanderwal would congregate regularly, putting the Jazz guitar trio format through the veritable mangler. Like any professional mangler will tell you some garments mangle much better than others and after a long process, the Grid worked out which songs were best mangled, and of course how to best mangle them. The resulting music is a mix (or mangle) of jazz sensibility, fusion audacity, quasi-rock poses, minimalist posturing, electro hand claps, country spooning and some good music that you will probably like. This week we welcome back Pugsley Buzzard from Sydney followed by a kickin' late show with Solomon Pitt, Eilse Lynelle and Empire before the ANZAC Day public holiday. Don't miss a fantastic weekend of shows with a Tom Waits tribute on Friday from Libby Hammer with the Blue Monk Quartet and Shameem featuring artist Phil Doncon on Saturday. Then we round off the weekend with something a little different with a show from Country Music rising music star Chelsea Basham.

Presented by North Street Music, Song Lounge features a selection of Australia's leading singer-songwriters together for an evening of wine, tapas and storytelling. Featuring Jay Grafton - her unadulterated passionate voice will draw you into her world as she sings to you her stories of life, love and adventure. Kate Gilbertson - her warm, fresh folk sound likens her to artists like Laura Marling, Bob Dylan and Regina Spektor with her lyrical mind and nature. Jacob Diamond - writes folk songs that are melodic and surprising. His song-writing, often with jazzy chords and structures, has kept audiences in his home town intrigued since he first took to the stage in 2009 at the delicate age of 15. Step right up step right up! Kim and Libby each have an extensive Tom Waits repertoire and together have a long history of successful tribute shows. Tonight they open a small window into the vast body of work that is Wait's music. Some of these arrangements by Kim and Libby are in the Jazz genre whilst others remain relatively unscathed and are fairly true to their origin. Shameem was kept busy during 2011 with touring in her home state of Western Australia and a song writing collaboration in the UK with a Grammy-winning producer James Bryan (Nelly Furtado). In 2012, fresh off the release of her self-titled debut album, she has had a whirlwind performance schedule: supporting such artists as Ronan Keating and Belinda Carlisle before audiences in the thousands and undertaking a successful national headlining tour. SUNDAY 5.30pm Chelsea Basham

Chelsea Basham’s brilliant debut album ‘I Make My Own Sunshine’ has critics raving and country fans adopting this WA native. Since its release in August it has spawned three hit singles and two #1 videos on Country Music Channel (CMC). Music critic Bernard Zuel described Chelsea’s album as “genuinely soulful country” in Sydney’s Sun Herald and Melbourne’s The Age. Brisbane’s Courier Mail proclaimed “Basham has talent and a mellow soulful voice somewhere between Trisha Yearwood and The Dixie Chick’s Natalie Maines”. In January this year Chelsea was awarded the Golden Guitar for ‘Best New Talent of the Year’ at the CMAA Country Music Awards of Australia. She’s also a finalist in the upcoming 2013 CMC Music Awards and the 2013 APRA Professional Development Award which was won by Gotye in 2009. Chelsea Basham melds country traditions with broader influences. She’s bright and upbeat, a songwriter of merit, an artist of substance and an engaging live performer. She’s appeared at major events such as The Gympie Muster, The CMAA Country Music Awards and CMC Rocks The Hunter and returns home to WA for her first shows since the celebrated release of her debut album. We have a bevy of talented acts this week with a range of shows from all star interstate lineup presenting The Mingus Amongst Us this evening to the sublime Adelaide pairing of Charmaine Jones and Mike Bevan on Tuesday. The ever touring Stu Larsen with guest Natsuki Kurai is sold out Thursday and Sydeny based Nicki Gillis will be sure to put on a great show on Sunday. Add to that a double Friday/Saturday from James Flynn and his Little Big Band and a couple of red hot late shows and the week at The Ellington is complete.

MONDAY 7.00pm Mingus Amongst Us

Sydney baritone saxophonist Steve Fitzmaurice brings together some of the country's finest musicians for a night of Mingus mayhem! This 9 piece band features Steve (bari) and Michael Azzopardi (piano) from Sydney; Tim Wilson (alto) and Dan Beasy (Trumpet) from Melbourne; and Perth's own Carl Mackey (Tenor), Jeremy Greig (bone), James Cross (bone), Pete Jeavons (bass) and Chris Tarr (drums). Vocalist Charmaine Jones and Guitarist Mike Bevan have been playing jazz, Brazilian and gospel music together for a number of years. Charmaine Jones has a unique style that draws on jazz, gospel, pop, r 'n' b, funk and choral music. Charmaine has worked alongside industry names such as Paul Grabowsky, James Morrison, Lillian Boute, Silvie Paladino, Naturally 7, Tina Arena, Glen Shorrick, Don Burrows and Michael Buble to name but a few. She created the highly successful “Gospo” choral ensemble, performed with the world-renowned Adelaide Connection and Latin ensemble Caliente among other projects. Click here for tickets

WEDNESDAY 7.00pm STU LARSEN and NATSUKI KURAI - Sold Out

Stu Larsen (AUS) first met Natsuki Kurai (JAPAN) by chance in a little venue in Tokyo two and a half years ago. This was the start of a special friendship, which has seen them play shows across Australia and Japan together. April will see the duo meet up again for a nationwide tour to release an acoustic EP recorded with Mark Myers in Cairns, Australia. Stu Larsen is a singer/songwriter from Bowenville, Queensland who has been travelling the world with his music for the last three years. He has spent the last two years on the road with England's Passenger and has just returned from his first headline tour of the UK and Europe. Natsuki Kurai is a genius harmonica player who you have to see to believe. He lives in Yokohama and plays 25+ shows a month with a wide variety of Japanese artists. THURSDAY 6.30pm Let's Hear it for Gen Y - for Music Rocks the Ellington

On the back of themed events such as ‘Back to the 70’s’, ‘A Tribute to Led Zeppelin’ and ‘Those No Longer With Us’ at the start of the past few years at the Ellington for the young Music Rocks Australia musicians, the floor has been opened for these Gen Y performers to choose their own repertoire to showcase at this prestigious venue. The most talented young Rock musicians in W.A. hit the stage with a broad selection of songs illustrating their musical tastes and influences. From current day Pop to Retro Rock, not mention some very specific niche genres for musicians ageing from 10 to 20 years old. Young bands who in 2012 hit the stage for Australia’s Got Talent and the Bridgetown Blues festival and the some very new talent... along with some special invited groups from schools around W.A. including a new band from the Association for the Blind W.A. James Flynn returns this month from his European tour to present another packed-to-the-brim night of entertainment, in what will be his first 2013 little big band concert. The velvet voiced all-round entertainer and his seven-piece band bring together the old and the new in their latest show. They take the most popular sounds of current jazz stars, such as Michael Bublé and Jamie Cullum, and mix them with the timeless hits of Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Dean Martin, Chet Baker and Bobby Darin. Nicki Gillis performs the songs of the Women of the 60’s and 70’s who have made a difference such as Dusty Springfield, Nancy Sinatra, Carole King, Carly Simon, Cher and blends it with her own music that draws strongly from it’s country and blues roots. As a mother of two, Nicki has managed to forge a successful career in the music industry over many years of hard work. Her songs are a reflection of her life and that of many modern women. She shows during every performance that as a real woman you can still exude the sensuality and confidence that is so often forgotten, but not necessarily lost, by women today. As the winner of numerous awards including Australian Entertainment Industry (MO) Award, Nicki has had chart success both in Australia and Europe which includes a No. 1 hit on the UK hotdisc chart with “Be A Star”, a cheeky upbeat song written by Nicki depicting her life as a performer and advice given along the way. Saxophonist Jamie Oehlers' latest album, "Smoke and Mirrors" featuring the incredible American drummer Ari Honeig, recently won "Best Australian Jazz Album" in Rhythm magazine's readers poll. Tonight Jamie and his group will be performing tracks from the album with a few new tunes that are hot off the press. This will be Jamie and Tal's last performance together before they head to the UK and Europe to perform - Always dynamic and energetic, come down to be recharged! THURSDAY 7.00pm Paul Gioia CD Launch - Blue Sky

For decades, Paul Gioia has been one of Western Australia's leading blues and gospel pianists, having wowed audiences with his high-energy music and evocative ballads. With two solo CDs already under his belt, Mercy Train and Rising Sea, Paul now launches his third solo CD, Blue Sky. With help from some of Perth's top musoes, Paul has completed his most challenging project to date. Each song has been allowed to speak for itself, from New Orleans brass band romps and searing electric blues to haunting ballads, and even tipping the hat to African grooves. The result is something Paul is incredibly proud of. Jake Dennis is the charismatic front man for Mint Jazz Band (www.mintjazzband.blogspot.com), a fresh Perth jazz/swing/blues/contemporary quartet which features funky Australian pianist Mark Cunniffe, superb Guernsey drummer Chris Marquand, and expressive Singaporean double bassist Malcolm Mah. They have performed together regularly at Wolf Lane and Wild Fig as well as at The Byrneleigh and the Town of Cambridge’s Music in the Park and always provide a sophisticated and memorable show. Chamber Jam @ The Ellington is a night of chamber music in Perth like no other. Members free tonight - but all welcome. Ali Bodycoat has been performing professionally in the Jazz scene throughout venues in Western Australia since 1995 with her Trio, Quartet and Quintet. Ali has performed at the Perth Jazz Society, Jazz Fremantle, Perth and Fremantle Festivals and worked consistently in Musical Theatre with yellow glass theatre inc since studying at the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts in 2002. WEDNESDAY 8.00pm The Russell Holmes Trio

(Note later start time due to private function - doors open at 8.00pm) 2001 WAMI award winning Jazz Pianist, Russell Holmes has performed with many great jazz ensembles including MPS, Frames of Minds, The Raggabillys, Hip Mo Toast and artists such as Dale Barlow, Red Rodney and many others. Most recent highlights would include being invited to perform at the Celimontana Jazz Festival in Rome, Italy ( July2006 ) and supporting James Taylor at the infamous Leeuwin concert . Whilst being recorded on over 35 cds, in 2006 he released “One Evening”, a cd recorded with his regular trio with Matt Willis and Danny Susnjar. This was launched in October 2006 . Russell’s most recent recording is a nationally released cd by the ABC Jazz label entitled Fire and Rain ‘THE JAMES TAYLOR PROJECT’( released 21st February 2009) which features the regular trio line-up performing eleven beautiful tracks of James Taylor songs. THURSDAY 8.00pm Adam Hall and the Velvet Playboys

(Note later start time due to private function - doors open at 8.00pm) 2013 is full steam ahead for international trumpeter and vocalist Adam Hall. Hall has been touring with the Richard Jackson Trio (Singapore) and nationally with Big Jay McNeely (USA). He also found time to record two new CDs at the internationally famous Lion Studios in Singapore. Recent travels include travel to Europe to tour with Big Jay McNeely (USA) playing to full houses in Spain, Germany and Vienna as part of the Winter Festival series. Adam recently officially released his two latest CDs When It’s Party Time Down South and It’s You It’s Me at the Fremantle Arts Centre. The line up is Hall (lead vocals and trumpet), Tim Forster (original band member; tenor sax, flute and vocals), Mark Turner (Guitar and Vocals), Adam Springhetti (Double Bass), Matt Hanson (Drums) and special guest appearances by Jessie Gordon (Vocals) and original VP member Len Whittle (keyboard). Don't miss this incredible one off late show with the Guy Sebastian's touring band. The evening will kick off with a set from Howie Morgan, James Sandon and Tom O'Halloran (while the Guy Sebastian gig finishes at Burswood Theatre) and then it will be full steam ahead with the other three members - David Ryan Harris and friends Terepai Richmond and Adam Ventoura. David Ryan Harris is a singer-songwriter based in Los Angeles, California. Born in Evanston, Illinois, Harris moved to Atlanta at a young age. After a short period out of the limelight, Harris began working as a producer and featured guitarist with Dionne Farris, a former vocalist from hip-hop group Arrested Development. Harris’ guitar work can be heard throughout Farris’ 1995 album Wild Seed, Wild Flower. Harris worked with Farris until he launched his solo career in 1997. In March 2009, Harris performed with Australian musician Guy Sebastian at SXSW, Austin Texas and has been collaborating since then. Terapai Richmond is without doubt on of Australia's finest drummers and featured as part of the Australian acid jazz group DIG. He is highly in demand as a session and touring drummer. Adam Ventoura began his musical career in Perth and after relocating to Sydney has been bassist in some of Australia's iconic rock and pop bands including Jon Stevens and Guy Sebastian. SUNDAY 5.30pm The Gavin Kerr Quartet featuring Mel Crothers

This Easter Sunday the Gavin Kerr Quartet will be swinging up a storm at the Ellington with their favourite vocalist, Mel Crothers. After performing to packed audiences throughout 2012, this group of talented musicians are back to play their well loved brand of swinging jazz just for you. Joining Gavin will be Ookii Effendi on piano, Danny Moss Jnr on bass and Daron Crothers on reeds. Having performed hundreds of times together it is obvious, to the many audiences that have heard their music, that this quartet truly enjoy their musical partnership. SUNDAY 8.30pm Samba Social Club - Marcio Mendes and Friends

Tables removed for dancing so no table bookings available for this show. These guys play samba, the rhythms of North East Brazil and everything in between. Blending electronic sounds with acoustic vibrancy, these two have a natural chemistry that is infectious. Marcio Mendes - Marcio hails from Sau Paulo, Brazil's largest city. He has played music professionally since his early 20’s and has performed with highly respected names of the Brazilian music scene such as Djavan and also famous samba and pagode bands from Brazil such as Mundo do Samba, Arte Popular and Negritude Junior. He has entertained crowds as large as 100 thousand people in Brazil, Europe and Australia with artists such as Leandro Learte and the pianist Tania Maria. Click here for tickets

Deborah Conway headlines this week at The Ellington

Deborah Conway and Willy Zygier headline this Saturday night with a special one off Ellington show. The sublime Grace Woodroofe is back for two special shows on Tuesday and Wednesday and a debut show from Sydney singer songwriter Brett Winterford on Thursday. Other shows to check out include the debut of the FSO - Five Sax Orchestra on Sunday and a fantastic Song Lounge this Monday evening.

MONDAY 7.00pm Song Lounge

Presented by North Street Music, Song Lounge features a selection of Australia's leading singer-songwriters together for an evening of wine, tapas and storytelling. This week's line up includes Riley Pearce - His musical influences includes the likes of Passenger, Matt Corby & Charlie Simpson who all have their own unique styling much the same as Riley offers. Jessica Morhall - Her songs reflect the internal dialogue of what it means to be human and carving out your own path in this world. Nat Ripepi - Rich, warm and emotive are a few words to describe the voice of one of Australia’s best kept vocal secrets. Returning from the USA for 2 special shows at The Ellington. With her uniquely warm, husky, and sometimes mournful voice, Grace Woodroofe is about to make a special mark on the music scene. At just twenty years of age, Perth-born Grace possesses wisdom and artistry well beyond her years. Forming a bond with music as a teenager, Grace taught herself to play guitar and sing. “I was greatly inspired by blues singers, and developed my own blues indie sound,” she says. At the age of sixteen, Grace’s demo was placed in the capable hands of Ben Harper by none other than the late Heath Ledger. Click here for tickets

THURSDAY 7.00pm Brett Winterford (Sydney)

Brett Winterford is a folk singer-songwriter from Sydney, Australia. Reinventing the modern day troubadour, Winterford has spent the last couple of years writing songs, travelling the globe and creating a groundbreaking path for folk music, performing unique concerts atop double-decker buses, on river barges, in ancient forts, bedrooms, corner pubs and cafes from Berlin to Brooklyn. His long awaited solo debut, ‘The Greenthumb EP’, is a set of six songs inspired by ‘Pan’ a famous Australian landscape painting by Sydney Long. The EP was recorded by Josh Schuberth (Josh Pyke) and it features special guests Mr Percival, Ray Mann and Kent Eastwood. Coloured by nylon-string acoustics and mandolins, pianos and mellotron, shakers, timpani and tom drums, the recordings deal with the trials and triumphs of the troubadour, the reclaiming of imagination and appreciation for the natural world. WAMI Award winning songstress Jodie Tes, makes her return to the Perth Jazz scene with an exciting repertoire inspired by Nina Simone, Billie Holliday and Ella Fitzgerald. Since graduating from the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts in 2001, Jodie has gone on to record three albums and to tour nationally and internationally. Conway & Zygier explore the breadth of sound that can be extracted from acoustic instruments and vocals. The sound is endlessly inventive within the bounds of real. Their new album “Stories Of Ghosts” is an examination of Old Testament themes, of existential uncertainty in the face of unchanging beliefs and coming to terms with the endless trade off that life is full of - loss leavened with happiness, tragedy with humour and sadness with joy. Building on the acoustic instrumentation of 2010’s Half Man Half Woman, Stories Of Ghosts adds layers of wood, strings & air, creating a sound that veers from delicate & melancholy to savage & fierce. The ‘five sax orch’ was established as a dedicated band in 2012 after almost a decade working as a section with WASO, Malaysian Philharmonic, Singapore Symphony, and a multitude of shows. Providing an opportunity to meet together regularly and share great red wine was the real reason it solidified, but it soon became clear that this unique collection of fine saxophonists was becoming a musical force. FSO is: Matt Styles soprano and alto saxes & wannabe sommelier, Melissa Skinner alto and soprano saxes, stylist & consultant, Luke Pownall tenor and alto saxes, marketing guru & 5 Seeds cider model, Keith McGowan tenor sax, obsessive-compulsive cyclist, Alex Boyd baritone sax, wine & cigar connoisseur.
