I’m surprised I didn’t ‘follow this root’ sooner than now, as “Jesus saying His is ‘the Way, the Truth & the Light’” is the root of a lot of my disagreement with Christianity—i.e. I thus believe that He saves me as much as I believe that ‘the intersection’ gets me to the store.

(That is: He’s definitely ‘the solid ground I must travel over to get safe,’ but the believ ers themselves have to wake up &-walk the Way, -prove the Truth & -catch sight of the Light!

The true sense of the word “Way” is “to Move; Habits- or Course of Life, Road, Path, Travel-course, Room, Space, Freedom of movement” (Weigh, Manner in which Some thing Occurs).

Speaking of Jesus, you remember His “Parable of the Sower”—where the farm-owner s hired-hand goes out and ‘sows the seed’ by throwing it down on the owner’s land? Well, I some times think of these blogs as ‘seeds I set down upon the web.’

But there’s a difference. Where Jesus’s sower could leave the seed on the ground and could trust it to “take root and grow,” I have to give the roots a little start (like a gardener who digs little holes in the ground for the plants to get started).

So–starting (or re starting) with Elvis today–I’ll start by ‘doing’ each word I think-of as I think of it, and will follow that by ‘doing’ each of that word’s source-meanings.

As I was searching for ‘the root of the anger that Kenneth Copeland Ministries (KCM) causes me to feel,’ I found This Is Trouble (a blog which you can Subscribe to Email-Alerts for, Here), which reviews this fear (with two others) as concerns ‘getting the nerve up to ask for girls’ numbers or -companionship or -hands (in marriage).

But I think KCM has this fear (‘Agerephobia,’ which I derive from the etymologies of “Action” and “Phobia”) as regards the actual duty of Christian Discipleship.

I’ve recently gotten sort-of-a ‘revelation’ concerning Christianity—basically
that its ministers want follow ers to believe they’re entitled to all the
glorious fruits of victory without any personal sacrifice (except for some
‘sacrifice of praise’-story that translates to ‘don’t think you have any
responsibilities but to believe/plan-to-obey/take/have/thank/pay-forward
for the glorious rewards’).

Their ‘agerephobia’ is actually a mutation of my agerephobia, which might really be closer to ‘werghphuphobia’ (my fear of being wrong) or ‘bhelpridophobia’ (fear of being blinded by self-pride)—a fear which most memorably stems from my “wrong” re action to … some thing leading to ‘a little talk’ with a Bethany (Oklahoma) police-offic er who (I'm paraphrasing here) re minded me that “legal” doesn’t mean ‘immortal’ or ‘impervious to harm’ or even ‘right’ (for that moment), and -that police-offic ers aren’t there to ‘protect the ones who are right’ so-much as they are ‘to keep the peace.’

That’s why I'm afraid to be ‘so proud of my intentions that I'm blind to the wrongness of my actions’ (a fear which resembles “homophobia,” as GLBTs thrive on their ‘pride’ so much that … their focus is drawn-away from love and -toward ‘competition against all things that might disagree with their lifestyle’).

I could ‘shoot-off on a tangent there’ (and probably will later), but I first want to enlighten KCM to their fear that is related to my bhelpridophobia. I am a lectur er (I could have remained a “lector” (verbal read er in public), but ‘not being encouraged to do that enough’ has moved me to realize that the Holy Bible IS NOT THE MANIFEST WORD-OF-GOD).

Due to statements like that last one (and my frequent making of statements so wrong from my ‘pedestal of righteousness’), KCM fears that ‘giving me the equipment I need to lead our brothers-&-sisters to the true manifest Word-of-God’ would result in “spreading God’s message wrongly—charging it with lots of feelings and opinions that are not conducive to the Prosperity of their ‘highly-deserved luxury’ (as they started from a quality-decision of a recording-artist/airplane-pilot in Oklahoma, and have fought hard and -have used THE BLESSING to grow into a ministry of great abundance).

I’m sure–using St. James’ “You have not (the equipment you would need to use your computer to spread the Word) because you ask not (for us to give it to you)”–they might claim that I'm ‘taunting’ them into sending the equipment—daring them to ‘do it … unless they’re “chicken” And maybe I am so-making a dare, but I would put it more factually: ‘If they do not send the required equipment, then they are saying that they fear my speech!’

The ‘grace-filled minister’ in me wants me to ‘ask KCM nicely to send me a webcam’ (rather than daring them with the threat of being marked “cowards”), but then I consider the threat that most Christian propaganda makes: “Believe in Jesus’ Name, -life, -death & -resurrection, or be doomed to Hell for eternity!” They make that ‘threat’ because those are the only choices they know (and/or because they know those are the only choices).

Sure, the Christians don’t want non-believ ers to burn forever; just like I don’t want KCM to be labeled ‘cowards,’ but (just like Christians say of non-believ ers), “it’s their choice!”

One principle of Nichiren Buddhism says that every effect has a cause. Fear is one of these effects, very close to ‘the true sense of that word.’

The true sense of the word “Fear” is “to Lead, Pass Over (Trial, Risk, Danger; Attempt, Experience; Vigilance; Watcher); to Try; (Ambush; Harm, Distress, Deception); Calamity, Sudden danger, Peril, sudden Attack; to Terrify, Frighten (to Lie in Wait, to Plot Against, to Taunt)” (Forward, Through, Per).

As Cypher Raige (played by Will Smith) tells his son Kitai Raige (played by his son Jaden Smith), “Don’t get me wrong; danger is very real, but fear is a choice.”

In the movie AFTER EARTH, Cypher goes on to explain ‘why that is.’^* But–without the context of that story–I’m sure many of you are thinking, ‘I don’t “choose” to be afraid!’ And you’re right … just like you don’t ‘choose’ to breathe while you sleep. (That is, you do choose to breathe while you sleep, because you do not choose not to).

In order to choose not to fear, we make our fears into ‘options.’ And–as with Adam and the animals at the beginning of the world–we ‘option-ize’ the things by giving them names—most of them ending with “-Phobia.”

The true sense of the word/suffix “Phobia” is “to Run (to Flee; a Stream); Panic; Outward Show of fear, Object of fear or terror; Irrational fear, Horror, Aversion; Excessive fear of-“

Many of the names we use are listed on “The Phobia List (Online),” but we’ll focus on a few here:

You are not your job. You are not the amount of cash you have in the bank. You are not your possessions.
Find your passion. Look for what inspires you. Find what you love to do and pursue it with all your heart. You may well find a way how to make money from doing it.

Huffington Post's Night-Owl Therapy

The Huffington Post tells us there's nothing 'wrong' with being a night-owl, but they give us the rules for The Night Owl's Guide To The Perfect Morning:

Turn off the tech at night.
Set a shut-down time.
Don't beat yourself up when the alarm goes off.
Drink up (a glass of water as soon as you rise).
Get mindful.
Work Up a Sweat.
Fuel-up with a healthy breakfast.
Prep for the day ahead.
Turn up the happy-tunes (on your i-Device) for the commute.
Indulge in an afternoon nap.

Then they give us the rules for reigning-in "social jet-lag" (which is what you get when you throw-off your regular sleep-schedule for the weekend):

Get a solid night's sleep EVERY weeknight.
Take short naps the day before- & the day after-late nights.
Avoid sleeping-in on both weekend-days (i.e. either Saturday OR Sunday is okay, just not both)
Get moving!
Bathe yourself in sunlight.
Choose one night to booze.
Avoid coffee after 2 p.m.

Relationships: When to Cut Your Losses

"Better to live on a corner of the roof than share a house with a quarrelsome wife [or husband]."¹

Among the most painful of life's experiences is rejection by a loved one.

When a couple is in a hopeless situation where there is continual rejection, hatred, and/or physical and emotional abuse by one or both partners, should they stay together for the sake of the children or should they cut their losses? Some say they should stay together no matter what. Others say to do so is insanity. But what does God say?

It is true that God hates divorce. "'I hate divorce,' says the LORD God of Israel."² But who in his right mind doesn't? Jesus, in the Gospels, was also against divorce.

God's Word also says, "Better to live on a corner of the roof than share a house with a quarrelsome wife [or husband]."¹And again, the Apostle Paul wrote, "If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone."³ This implies that it isn't possible to live peaceably with everyone.

Because of what God's Word says, I believe that divorce should only ever be the last resort. Marriage partners need to commit themselves to resolve their disagreements and seek all the help needed to achieve this goal. However, in cases where one partner refuses to work on resolution and files for divorce, the other spouse doesn't have a choice.

Also because of what God's Word says, where there are major conflicts and only one partner is willing to work on the relationship and get marriage counseling, tough love is needed. In theseand especially in abusive situationsthe one being abused needs to set boundaries and kindly but firmly say to his/her partner, "Unless you are willing to seek help together, I will no longer tolerate your abusive behavior and will have to separate myself and the children from you." When one sets boundaries, he/she needs to keep them. This won't guarantee resolution, but without setting and keeping strict boundaries, it will almost guarantee that there will never be resolution.

Furthermore, wherever a spouse and/or children are being abused, physically, sexually and/or emotionally, the abused spouse needs to separate herself and the children immediately. The separating spouse needs to make it very clear to the abusive partner that he/she will not get back together until he/she (the abusive partner) gets help and overcomes his or her abusive behaviors.

In broken relationships playing the blame game doesn't resolve anything because both partners are contributing something to the failure of the relationshipeven if one spouse is too passive or codependent.

Only when all else fails should a couple file for divorce.

Suggested prayer: "Dear God, whenever I am in a conflict situation, please help me to see what I am contributing and, rather than playing the blame game, get the help I need to resolve my issues. Thank You for hearing and answering my prayer. Gratefully in Jesus's name, amen."

It starts with realizing what it is: Dr. Norman Doidge (MD)--in his The Brain that Changes Itself (offered at the link below)--that it's root is "worry" (that's the 'obsession')---a 'worry' that "compels" the worrier to do things that--though the actions have little-or-no effect on the reality of their situation--abate their worry (making them feel like they've "run their race" ... like they've done all they can).

And yes, that 'run their race' is taken from the Christian Bible; because yes, that's what religion is---a sign of OCD. At base, it's the idea that you "say the right prayers with the right words in the right order," and then you don't worry about the problem because "God will take care of it."

If that eases your worry, then you're just Obsessive-Compulsive but it's not hurting you (and you can stop reading right here). But if you continue to worry after praying (even after praying 'with the right words for the right duration with the right intonation & volume in the right order), then you need to do some of the exercises I hope Dr. Doidge goes on to talk about in Chapter 6 of the book. (I just started Chapter 6 today, and have been slow about reading lately, and need to return the book to the library here in half an hour or so.)

But I DID get to his description of the three brain-activities that make up the worry-process:

The orbital frontal cortex detects the mistake and is more-active.
The orbital frontal cortex signals the cingulate gyrus, which triggers the feeling that something's wrong and something bad will happen unless we do something.
(where the 'disorder' comes in) The caudate nucleus is sort of an "automatic gearshift" that lets the mind move on to the next focus unless you have OCD (which could be genetic, but also might be caused by a caudate-swelling infection.

Jeffrey M. Schwartz is developing a treatment for OCD, comprised of two main steps:

Re-label the problem (your problem is the disorder, not the germs/weather/unlocked-door/whatever). This helps the patient distinguish between the disorder & the problems that they're worrying about.
Re-focus by doing something positive.

Hopefully that will train your brain to shift gears right!

On July 18th 2012, SheLoves Magazine organized a syncroblog project, inviting women to write a love letter to their bodies. This project inspired and encouraged women everywhere to remember their worth and the beauty which God created. Below is one of the many letters that was submitted. Let her words encourage you to remember that your loving Creator has made you beautiful, and does not make mistakes.

To the body that belongs to Lauren Nicole: I do call this a love letter, and it is one of love. The problem is, I'm not even at the place where I can tell you why I love you so much yet. I have too much to say I'm sorry for. So, as love requires, an apology:

Dear You,

I need to apologize.

If you were a friend, you would have left this relationship long ago. And honestly? I would have understood. I never say my thanks, I never say I love you, and every gift I've given you was just because I wanted to make me to look better. Not because I cared about you. I've been so unforgivably selfish.

If you were a lover, even the truest of the true, you would have given up on me. I can't remember the last time I valued you for who you are. On my bad days – and there have been lots of them, you know – I assaulted you. I told you how disappointed I was in you. I listed all the things I hated about you. I made sure to hide you from certain people, because I was embarrassed to be seen with you. I judged you. I stood in front of the mirror and made sure you knew exactly why I hated you so much. And on my good days? Our good days? I was content to tell you I wished that I had better – but that you would have to do for now.

Now that I think about it, I've never treated anyone worse than I have you.

Now that I think about it, I'm sorry doesn't seem to cut it. But I'm going to try. I'm going to finally say everything I should have said long ago.

I'm sorry.

I'm sorry I've treated you like a burden, instead of a gift.

I'm sorry I've verbalized every single flaw, instead of finding joy in all of your perfection.

I'm sorry I've compared you to every woman I've seen, instead of making sure you knew you were loved.

I'm sorry for never thinking you were good enough.

I'm sorry for not defending you to others, and talking bad about you to my closest friends.

I'm sorry for hushing what you've wanted, and silencing every valuable thing you've wanted me to know.

I'm sorry that I made you an enemy, instead of an ally.

But most of all, I'm sorry that it's taken me twenty four years to realize that we're stuck together forever. Twenty four years to ever realize I need to say I'm sorry.

Maybe I need to apologize to each tiny piece of you. You're so intricate and delicate, you know? I know. I know you so well. and I know every tiny piece has been so badly hurt by me.

I'm sorry, feet, for hiding you. It's been embarrassing how you turn purple sometimes. The kids used to make fun of you, and it hurt my feelings.

I'm sorry, legs, for always telling you that you're the only thing i've got going for me. That's a lot of weight to carry, and I know I'm setting us up for failure.

I'm sorry, butt, for all the jokes that my parents made about you, and that I accepted them as the truth. I did learn to like you for the last couple years, but this year, it's been really difficult again. I twist and try to see you in the mirror every day, and I'm sorry for wishing that one morning you'd just be less.

I'm sorry, tummy, for comparing you to photoshop every single day. It's just so hard, you know? Maybe you don't. It really gets me down every morning. But I promise, I'm trying. I try to remember that one day, you'll make a baby in there, all by yourself. That's so beautiful. I'm trying to remember it.

I'm sorry, breasts, for all the things i've thought about you, that I won't repeat again.

I'm sorry, back, for wishing you were better so that I could show you off in those sexy dresses.

I'm sorry, arms, for never getting all those beautiful tattoos I wanted years ago because I thought you were fat, and didn't want to draw extra attention to you.

I'm sorry, lips, for spending so much money on lip gloss with chemicals that would change you. My husband tells me now that he thinks you're perfect, and I promise to agree from now on. You really are.

I'm sorry, nose, for despising you since I was so little. I read once that every single woman hates her nose, and it must really suck to be you. I'm really going to work on it.

I'm sorry, eyes, for wishing you were brown my entire life. I don't know where I got the idea that women with brown eyes are prettier, but you're so beautiful. I want to let you be that.

Dear Everything. I'm so sorry that I have never been grateful.

You've done every single thing I've ever asked of you – except that one awful 10 mile hike – and I've never once said thank you. I only looked at you with disdain and asked why you couldn't have looked better doing it.

And so, dear everything. Dear body. Dear self. Dear cells that are more countless than the stars in the sky, who give flesh and bone to my soul, I love you.

Even now, while I'm sad, while I sit here judging you, hating you, being disappointed by you – know that I've finally realized it isn't you. It's me.

And I promise to begin to change that.

Promise. Cross my heart, hope to die.

Because we will one day, together, and I want to have lived having loved you.

Three no-hype facts about President Obama's new carbon rule

On Monday, the Obama administration released a draft proposal to -- for the first time -- place limits that would further reduce carbon pollution from electricity-generating power plants.

This is a good thing and long overdue. We at CREDO will support the proposal while pushing for it to be greatly strengthened, and stand against the cynical forces in the fossil fuel industry who would have us do nothing in the face of the global warming crisis.

Already there is a lot of hyperbole from all sides, and this will only continue in the weeks and months to come. If you would like to know a bit more about the underlying context, we invite you to keep reading and consider these three key points.

Limiting carbon pollution is a no-brainer, and long overdue. In some ways, it was literally inevitable after the EPA recognized the science that carbon emissions are a pollutant, and even the Roberts Supreme Court (in 2007!) ruled that EPA has both the right and the obligation to address carbon pollution under the Clean Air Act.¹ Until and unless this rule goes into effect, there are NO limits on the amount of carbon pollution that power plants can spew into the atmosphere, driving climate change. So asking states to come up with plans to lower that pollution is a good thing.
The cynical, Chicken Little crowd is lying to you -- and their lies are wrong every time. The doom-and-gloom crowd that represents polluters – like the Chamber of Commerce and the coal industry associations – are already out with prepackaged studies proclaiming dire-sounding effects on the struggling economy. They have been wrong every time for decades about each successive EPA effort to protect our health and safety, and they are wrong about this one.² The simple truth is that the costs of inaction to our health, property and safety are far, far, far greater than any modest cost of this modest rule. In fact, CREDO thinks the economy will actually benefit from the rules as the real tangible health benefits vastly outweigh the rather modest costs to utilities.
This rule is a smaller step than it sounds. And much smaller than it should be. It's important not to overstate the positive impacts of the rules. Far from being the single biggest thing ever done on global warming, as some are trumpeting, these rules are so modest in their scope that they are smaller than the emissions reductions that will be achieved by the car and truck fuel efficiency rules already in effect.^{3, 4} Quite a bit smaller.

The numbers behind the reductions sound big – 25% less carbon pollution from electricity generation by 2020 than the base year of 2005. But 2005 was a long time ago, when the economy and pollution levels were bigger. Almost two-thirds of that 25% reduction had already been achieved by 2012, with the EPA doing absolutely nothing on carbon pollution!⁵ The EPA expects to take input and work on the proposal for at least another year, and then, if released, states have two years to propose plans. So if everything goes perfectly – and it will not – that leaves only three years for the rule to have an effect by 2020. Thus, the trick is to bake in all the progress already made from every coal plant already shut down by activism, switched to natural gas, replaced by solar, wind, or reduced demand from energy efficiency. Most of the 25% reduction has nothing to do with what the EPA is proposing. The reduction is still good, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. If we're going to avoid the oncoming global warming apocalypse, we have much more to do.⁶

Monday's announcement comes down to this: We have a massive battle on our hands to make even modest changes. Coal state senators will attack the plan as being unreasonable and anti-jobs, the Koch brothers will unleash massive ad barrages with false information to keep the status quo, and Fox News will find industry-paid hacks to say it is all unnecessary. And just as in the fight for healthcare reform, we can expect Republican governors to refuse to participate at all, creating a protracted rules battle with the EPA, and dooming many states to more years of worsening air quality and higher healthcare costs.

One of the most well-meaning sentiments might also seem to be of the most patronizing: “Just hang in there.” When you’re a man and you’ve struck out several times in a row in the dating world, “just hang in there” can either be a comfort or an irritant, depending on the mood you’re in when you hear it, where you are in your struggle, and who is imparting this wisdom. When you think about it, though, it really is the best advice. After all, what are your options?

Well, let’s think about that. As far as I can see, there are three:

You can give up. As a single Catholic some days are so bleak that it actually seems as if giving up is the most sensible thing to do. After all, why should you have to face more rejection and more pain? But as a man that may be just what God has in mind for you. The fact is that men are hardwired for struggle. Most men know intuitively that you have to fight for the things that are worth getting. One of the reasons we like the chase is because we appreciate things when there is a little bit of risk involved. The prize is always sweeter when it has been won. Hang in there.

You can turn bitter. We’ve all been dumped, or suffered rejection, or perhaps had a really long dry spell when no one is returning any attention. We’ve had it up to here with dating and women in general, and we’re not going to get hurt anymore. So we complain. Hey, sometimes you have to let it all out. Go ahead and rant and rave, but make sure you do it while you’re alone, or with friends or family who know you and want to be there for you. Do it in front of anyone except a potential date. That means don’t post it on online dating sites or in the forums. It’s human to have those feelings but you don’t want to broadcast to the opposite sex every single thing you’re feeling at any given moment. There’s nothing wrong with a little venting from time to time, but you simply cannot let the occasional discouragement turn into full-blown pessimism. Believe me, it will come out in the tone of your correspondence!Another reaction to bitterness is this: we make sure we tell anyone who will listen just how insane dating is, and how self-absorbed and shallow all the women we contact are, and how no one can see just what a gem they have staring them right in the face. We’ve stayed true to our faith and our ideals and we’ve been cast aside! But as men it’s important to remember that feeling sorry for ourselves is not going to attract anyone. We should be about action. If you want women to see what a gem you are then show them in the way you speak, act, and live. Write a profile that highlights your strengths but don’t brag. Be confident. Someone will see it eventually. And eventually may mean longer than we would like. Just hang in there.

You can forge ahead. There is a point we reach where things seem as if they could not get any bleaker. We all know that point. But I think we all know that it can indeed get bleaker, and very often does. Pain does not last forever (though it can be revisited when we least expect it). But it is not continuous. When things seem really hopeless sometimes we just have to laugh. Feeling pain? Offer it up as reparation for past sins. Feeling hopeless? Pray a decade of the Rosary and meditate on Christ’s Agony in the Garden. Just feel it, get through it, and try again. It’s how we’re built.Rejection (or being ignored completely) hurts. There is no getting around that. For most of us there will be rejection. Perhaps even periods of frequent rejection. This is part of dating. “Hang in there” is not meant to imply that things will be easy.

I’ve been there. I did not meet my wife until I was 44. Sometimes she is still amazed at my ability to remain hopeful after decades of searching, false starts, painful break-ups and rejection. I hung in there.Lastly remember that a vocation comes from God. If we have discerned marriage as our vocation, then we have to remember that it is what God wants for us, and it is on God’s timetable. He won’t steer us wrong. He can’t.
