[Chris Jackson] This week’s image was the old photograph of young Robert Prevost in 1983, marching in Comiso, Sicily, in protest against the Cruise missiles installed under Ronald Reagan. That protest was organized by the Italian Communist Party. The old photograph fits the man now sitting in Rome with unnerving precision. It looks like an early disclosure.

Plenty of men did foolish things in youth. Plenty of old photos deserve to stay old. This one does not. This one matters because the instincts visible in the background of that march have never really left the stage. The moral vocabulary may be dressed up now in ecclesiastical language. The slogans may be softened into “peace,” “dialogue,” “encounter,” and “the Gospel.” The old left-wing reflex is still there all the same. Suspicion of the West. Suspicion of political realism. Suspicion of force even in the face of aggression. Moral preening in place of judgment. Humanitarian abstraction where Catholic order should stand.

Conservatives who spent the first weeks of this pontificate soothing themselves with the thought that Leo would somehow be a corrective to Francis now have to deal with a problem they cannot laugh away. The old photo has explanatory power. It helps make sense of the present.

The Real Cause of the War and the Only Condition for Peace

[Katholisches] Most Western analysts are convinced that the current war taking place in the Middle East is primarily due to economic interests in the oil and energy sectors. At the same time, the greatest concern of public opinion in Europe and the United States is that a prolongation of the conflict could disrupt daily life and significantly lower one's own standard of living. Given this interpretation of events, however, a question arises: Is there truly nothing beyond the economic dimension that could explain what is happening? Was Juan Donoso Cortés wrong when he claimed that there is no political question that does not ultimately involve a theological question, and urged us to turn our gaze toward the sphere of first principles upon which the universe rests? (*Ensayo sobre el catolicismo, el liberalismo y el socialismo*, BAC, 1946, Vol. II, p. 501)

And yet, there is no shortage of voices attributing an eschatological significance to the confused and dramatic events of our time. In the US, for example, Evangelical Protestantism exerts a strong influence on political life. Evangelicals make up about 20–25% of the American population and possess an extensive media network that makes them one of the best-organized religious groups in the country. This spectrum includes currents such as "Christian Zionists," who interpret the return of the Jewish people to the land of Israel as part of a divine plan. Accordingly, the political and military support of the USA for the State of Israel would correspond to a providential plan, and the reconstruction of the Temple in Jerusalem is seen as a necessary step for the fulfillment of biblical prophecies.

During a speech in Jerusalem in 2018, the American Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth openly expressed the hope for the reconstruction of the Third Temple. Today, however, the mount on which the First and Second Temples of Jerusalem once stood—destroyed by the Babylonians and the Romans—is occupied by the Dome of the Rock, one of Islam's most important sanctuaries. Rebuilding the Temple at this location would trigger a conflict with the entire Muslim world; for this reason, many Jews interpret the restoration more symbolically. Nevertheless, messianism remains a unifying element that permeates Judaism both within and outside Israel. For some, it is the expectation of a personal Messiah connected with the restoration of Jerusalem; for others, however, the personal figure of the Messiah is replaced by the concept of a "messianic age," understood as the historical redemption of humanity.

Messianism also plays a central role in Shia Islam, particularly in its most significant branch, Twelver Shiism. Believers are convinced that the twelfth Imam, Muhammad al-Mahdi, did not die but entered a state of "occultation" (*ghayba*) in 941 AD. According to this teaching, he is the "Hidden Imam" who will reappear at the end of time as the Mahdi—the "Rightly Guided One"—to restore justice and usher in an age of truth. The leaders of the Islamic Republic of Iran see themselves as temporary "representatives" of the Mahdi, tasked with ruling until his return. They view the liberation of Al-Quds (Jerusalem) and the holy sites of Islam as a sacred duty for all Muslims to enable the Mahdi's return. The conflict with the State of Israel is a necessary component of this eschatological perspective (Vali Nasr: *The Shia Revival*, W. W. Norton, 2006).

On the other hand, what is the Russian myth of the "Third Rome" if not also an eschatological vision, in which Moscow is presented as the last heir of the true Christian faith, called to preserve it until the end of time? For Putin's ideologue Alexander Dugin, the "Third Rome" represents the counter-pole to the West, which is described as a decadent civilization that has reached the end of its historical cycle. Dugin's critique of the West is taken up and further developed in Iran, Turkey, and the Arab world—particularly from an anti-Zionist perspective.

In their essay *Eurasia and Eschatology: Dugin’s Antiliberal Resonances in the Muslim World*, Kamal Gasimov and Marlene Laruelle have demonstrated the affinity of Dugin’s positions with those of Shiite messianism (*Studies in East European Thought*, 78, 2026, pp. 377–399). Françoise Thom, meanwhile, shows in an article titled *États-Unis et Russie: les ravages de l’eschatologie* (USA and Russia: The Ravages of Eschatology) from March 22, 2026, how Dugin's eschatological syncretism arises from the use of theological themes that serve the Kremlin’s imperialism.

The fundamental error of all false eschatologies ultimately consists in interpreting the struggle between good and evil as a fight between worldly powers for world domination. This shows that even Silicon Valley is not a stranger to these eschatological perspectives. Elon Musk invokes the Russian Konstantin Eduard Tsiolkovsky, the founder of "Cosmism," a pantheistic worldview in which space exploration is considered a necessary step in the evolutionary process of man and his integration into the cosmos.

For his part, Peter Thiel, co-founder of PayPal, argued in a series of lectures he gave in Rome in March on the subject of the Antichrist that technology, depending on its use, can be both an instrument of salvation and a factor of destruction. According to Thiel, the USA embodies a double possibility: either being the *Katechon*—the force that holds back chaos—or becoming the Antichrist, that is, the power that could dominate the world by means of its surveillance instruments. Thiel, himself the creator of technological control systems like the company Palantir, seems to embrace this double and unsettling identity.

And the Catholic Church? Can she limit herself to calling for peace from a perspective as immanent as those who propagate war for worldly purposes? Does the Church not possess her own theology of history based on the Augustinian contrast of the two cities: one driven by the "love of self even to the contempt of God," the other by the "love of God even to the contempt of self" (*De Civitate Dei*, XIV, 28)? In his Easter sermon on April 9, 1939, six months before the outbreak of World War II, Pius XII reminded us that "the only and unshakable foundation upon which true peace rests is God: God known, God respected, God obeyed. To diminish or destroy this subordination to the Divine Creator is the same as disturbing or completely destroying peace in individuals as in families, in nations as in the whole world."

The departure from God is the cause of every war, just as the return to the natural and divine order preserved by the Catholic Church is the condition for the only true peace. "Then at length," Pius XI exclaims in his encyclical *Quas Primas* of December 11, 1925, "will many a wound be healed; then will all law regain its former authority; then will the blessings of peace be restored; and the swords will fall from the hands of all, when all men shall freely acknowledge and obey the dominion of Christ, and every tongue shall confess that the Lord Jesus Christ is in the glory of God the Father."

The message of Fatima from 1917, which prophesies the triumph of the Immaculate Heart of Mary after a chastisement of the nations, seals this theology of history. Those who are able to raise their gaze beyond the immanent horizon of historical events trust in that ordered peace which the Redeemer will bring to earth before the end of time, and entrust its realization to His Divine Mother.

A Life Anchored in the Church

Born in April 1940 in Toulon, Lozac’hmeur grew up on the Île de Molène (Breton: *Molenez*) and attended the Collège of the Frères de Lamennais in Saint-Renan (Breton: *Lokournan*). His deep connection to the Church and the Holy Mass shaped his entire life. Despite the painful and prolonged crisis within the Church, he remained steadfast. Without his tireless efforts, the Holy Mass in the traditional form of the Roman Rite would not have been established with such energy in Brittany. Religious instruction and ethical issues, such as *Humanae Vitae* and the right-to-life movement, were also particularly close to his heart.

In 1961, he married and became the father of five children. By the age of 23, he passed the examination for secondary school teaching and began teaching at the Collège of Combourg (Breton: *Komborn*). In parallel, he continued his university education, notably under the supervision of Prof. Charles Foulon at the University of Rennes-II, where he later taught as a lecturer, assistant professor, associate professor, and finally, a full professor.

Scientific Merits

Lozac’hmeur earned his doctorate in 1978 with the thesis *La Genèse de la légende d’Yvain: essai de synthèse* (The Genesis of the Legend of Yvain: A Synthetic Essay), supervised by Prof. Léon Fleuriot, the head of the Celtic department at Rennes II. Together, they published an anthology of Celtic poetry—alongside Léon Prat and with an introduction by Per Jakez-Elias—which remains a reference work to this day.

His further scholarly works include translations and studies of medieval texts, such as the *Chanson d’Aiquin* ("The Song of Aiquin," 1985, with Maud Ozzava) and numerous works on the Arthurian legend in cooperation with the Japanese medievalist Shigemi Sazaki. His research on King Arthur, the Holy Grail, and figures like Mabonagrain is cited in Philippe Walter's *Dictionnaire de mythologie arthurienne*.

Beyond research, Lozac’hmeur was committed to training students at Rennes II and other universities. He was a co-founder of the Faculty of Saint-Malo (Faclib), intended to offer an alternative to the ideological influence then prevailing in higher education. However, political intervention led to its closure—another point of pain in his life.

Jean-Claude Lozac’hmeur campaigned intensively for his Breton homeland, particularly for the preservation and strengthening of Brittany's cultural identity. In his writings, he emphasized the historical independence of the region, its traditions, history, and the consciousness of a deep-rooted cultural continuity within France. He viewed Brittany not merely as a geographical space, but as a cultural community with its own distinct character, whose values and traditions should be preserved and passed on. His commitment thus went beyond simple local heritage care and was closely linked to the desire to assert regional identity against tendencies toward homogenization.

This was no easy undertaking in a France whose state doctrine since the French Revolution has been based on centralism and a uniform nation-state, which sought to erase linguistic and cultural diversity and fundamentally fought ethnic minorities, even though they are a part of France. He also recognized in this the "poisoned" Masonic influence, which he opposed.

Masonic Studies

Lozac’hmeur published numerous works on Freemasonry, which are considered carefully researched and documented. He argued that modern Freemasonry, though not directly, is based on ancient mystery cults and pursues an ideological goal: the establishment of a global state in which man becomes quasi-godlike through science and technology. For centuries a different legal system and state religion have marked its distinction from its southern neighbour – differences only augmented once the Scottish Parliament was reconvened in 1999. That same year, the composer James MacMillan ruffled the feathers of Scotland’s presiding liberal elite by calling out the ongoing anti-Catholic bigotry he argued was still pervasive in parts of Scottish society. The reaction to his remarks showed the Catholic Church has occupied an uneasy position within Scottish society.

As anecdotal and statistical reports from across the western world are showing a ‘quiet revival’ in interest in Christianity more broadly and Catholicism specifically, I spoke with Monsignor Patrick Burke, the parish priest of St James Church and Catholic chaplain to the University of St Andrews, to discuss how – or even whether – this revival is happening in Scotland and how the Church is responding.

“It’s definitely happening, but it’s got nothing to do with us,” Monsignor Burke reported. “God knows we – priests, laity – have done everything we can to destroy the Church but nonetheless there is a perceptible interest, a turning towards Catholic Christianity.”

Louis de Bonald (1754-1840), the great French counter-revolutionary thinker, monarchist and traditionalist Catholic, published a virulent text in 1806 against the emancipation of the Jews, denouncing Judaism as a foreign, parasitic force incompatible with French Christian society?

Louis de Bonald embodies the lucid reaction against the Revolution: he sees the Jewish emancipation of 1791 not as progress, but as an existential threat that dissolves the traditional order, Christian morality and national cohesion.

In his article “On the Jews” (Mercure de France, 8 February 1806), he asserts that the Jews form an “imperium in imperio” (a state within a state), that they are at war with Christian morality, that they live as parasites and remain a perpetually foreign people, even on French soil.
He compares their situation to that of freed Blacks and accuses the Enlightenment philosophers of having intellectually armed this senseless emancipation. He even goes so far as to write that if a Jewish Sanhedrin became the legislator, it could not produce laws more atrocious than those of the revolutionary Convention.

For Bonald, Judaism is not merely a different religion: it is a parallel society that refuses assimilation, practises usury and undermines the Catholic foundations of France. He calls for the return of discriminatory measures (distinctive markings, professional restrictions) to protect the nation.

According to reports, the traditionalist community sent a specially published book to every Italian diocesan bishop outlining its motives.

The volume, titled Al servizio della Chiesa ("In the Service of the Church") with the subtitle "The Episcopal Consecrations of the Society of St. Pius X," was published by the society's own press, Edizioni Piane. It aims to explain the theological and canonical arguments used by the SSPX to justify the planned consecrations. The content follows the line of reasoning established by its founder, Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, in 1988, which he termed "Operation Survival" for Tradition.

"In the Service of the Church: The Episcopal Consecrations"

The work portrays a deep crisis within the Church where—according to the Society's position—even ecclesiastical authorities are contributing to the spread of a "falsified faith." From this, the SSPX derives a "right to resistance" against the hierarchy. A quote from St. Paul’s Epistle to the Galatians, warning against the preaching of a "different gospel," serves as a programmatic opening.

The book was accompanied by a letter from the Italian District Superior, Father Gabriele D’Avino. In it, the action is described as an invitation to diocesan bishops to engage with the current state of the Church and enter into a process of "joint reflection."

Parallel Efforts in German-Speaking Regions

Simultaneously, the Society published its own brochure in the German-speaking world, compiling essential information regarding the upcoming consecrations. This publication is explicitly intended as a contribution to transparency and aims to provide supporting arguments for priests, the faithful, and interested parties.

Whether this initiative will resonate with the recipients remains to be seen. Observers note that even fundamental texts on recent church history are often little known. Military history is often sanitized (and weaponized, no pun intended) for the purposes of propaganda, and demoralization of Western peoples and our story, it can be a mercy and a salvation to delve into maps and maneuvers, where they can reveal and spell out the sinuous, harmonious connections underlying the story of our people, of Christendom, which is sometimes sorrowful, often triumphant, one of these connections is between the Bombardment of Algiers (1816) and Operation Epic Fury (2026) which were righteous, powerful responses to regimes that had pushed the international community to a breaking point. Fortified by the sacraments of the Holy Mother Church, James J. Condit, Sr. of Cincinnati, Ohio, passed peacefully into eternal life at 95 years old, on Monday, March 9, 2026. He was preceded in death by his wife Rose Marie, his oldest son James Condit, Jr. and his oldest grandchild, Therese Condit.

Born on April 8, 1930, Jim was the eldest of 9 children in an Irish, hard-working family. He was a distinguished lawyer marked by deep faith, fierce defender of the unborn and endless service to the vulnerable.

Jim attended St. Margaret of Cortona grade school, Purcell High School, Xavier University, Chase Law School & was an US Army veteran.

In 1952, he married Rose Marie (Kenney) and was blessed with 64 years of marriage. He was a loving husband & devoted father whose wisdom, faith, and gentle guidance will shape generations to come.

Jim was survived by his wife of 10 years,

Mary Lou (Kohnen) Donoghue, 5 siblings,

10 children, and 147 grand/great grandchildren.

A visitation will be held at Gilligan Funeral Home, 8225 Montgomery Road, Cincinnati on Sunday March 15, 2026, from 3pm-8pm. A Requiem Funeral Mass at Sacred Heart Church, 2733 Massachusetts Ave, Cincinnati, will take place on March 16, 2026 at 10:00 am. Burial to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
