To be unrealistic about their power if foolhardy. 2. Is it appropriate for a believer to directly rebuke a demon, or should the believer pray to God to have the demon dealt with? Step one: The Belt of Truth Step two: The Breastplate of Righteousness Step three: The Gospel of Peace Now lets look at the next 2 steps this morning: Step 4: The Shield Of Faith: take the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the flaming arrows of the evil one.. A. Faith is depending upon Christ and His facts not on feelings. 1. We are forgiven 2. We are loved by God 3. We are righteous and holy. B. Satan’s fiery arrows: 1. They do not come from us. We are holy and have the mind of Christ. Don’t condemn yourself for being under attack. 2. They are an attempt to cause us to doubt our identity. 3. They are an attempt to cause us to doubt God’s integrity. C. How do we take up the shield of faith: 1. Know that facts. 2. Believe the facts. 3. Repeat the facts. Step Five: The Helmet of Salvation A. A helmet protects the brain or the mind. 1. Remember that our main battlefield in this war is in the mind. We must guard our minds with the truth of our salvation. 1 Timothy 6:20 O Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to you, avoiding worldly {and} empty chatter {and} the opposing arguments of what is falsely called knowledge 2. We must constantly monitor what we are thinking. 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 NASB B. Looking to the future. 1. Paul is expressing the future hope we have in Christ. This world is not our home. This is a very important piece to our battle armament. Heaven is a reality. We will not suffer forever here. 1 Thessalonians 5:8 2. God is working out our salvation right now with His eternal plan. We rest on the sovereignty of God in our salvation. All of the political strife, economic woes, poverty, violence and pain are coming to an end as God is working out His infallible plan in history. There are in a very specific order. We need to pay careful attention to this order. 1. The first step: The Belt of Truth…. A. Stand therefore, and fasten the belt of truth around your waist NRSV: B. Christ is the truth C. Importance of the Scriptures: John 8:31-32 …If you abide in My word then you are truly disciples of Mine: and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. Abide means to dwell or live. As Christians, we must live and dwell EVERY SINGLE DAY in the truth. 2. The Second Step: The Breastplate of righteousness. A. What is our breastplate of righteousness? B. Why is it important? C. We HAVE to get this in the DNA of our lives! 3. The Third Step: The Gospel of peace. A. When we fasten into the truth of Jesus Christ and realize that we stand righteous in Him based on His merits, we are led to peace. Christ is our peace. Romans 5:1 Therefore having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. B. The Gospel or Good News is not just for non-Christians. It is for us! For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. 1. The enemy’s target: the mind. Because we are in a war and our opponent has sneaky and very effective tactics. Satan’s main source of attack is by sending lies into our minds. T Let’s look at the apostle Paul spiritual battle in Romans 7:14-25 2. The enemy’s WMD: the world. 1 John 2:14-17 Ray Stedman “The world is human society, blindly and universally accepting false values, shallow concepts and insights and deluded ideas of reality, as well as almost desperately insisting upon conformity to those standards and insights.” Romans 12:2 3. The enemy’s IED: The flesh 1 John 2:16 The flesh is our unique patterns of behavior apart from God. Satan will do everything he can to insure that we live by our own power and philosophy for as long as we live. There are 3 characteristics of the flesh mentioned here. The lust of the flesh: Lust means desire. We have human desires for food, drink, sex, sleep, and for love. Satan preys upon these desires and tries to pervert them anyway he can. He wants us to live by our impulses and emotions. Yet, if we allow the Holy Spirit to live through us we will not gratify the sinful desires of the flesh. Galatians 5:16 We find our joy in Christ and the fruit of self-control bears abundant life at home, at work and in our hearts. The Hatred of Our Opponent. Satan hates God: Tries to pervert or counterfeit the kingdom of God. We need to understand the stakes and immerse ourselves in the truth and person of Christ. He uses lies and deceit to rob us of joy and to kill our effectiveness in Christ. 3. The Defeat of Our Opponent. Jesus came to destroy the work of the devil by the death and resurrection. 1 John 3:8 We are free from condemnation. Hebrews 2:14 God now lives in us now as our power over Satan’s schemes. The Foundation of our attitude What are the things above? A. The realities of God's truth; 3 Towering Realities a. God is not mad at me but only deals with me in love b. The blood of Christ has removed my guilt and shame c. We are literally holy and righteous because of Christ. *****These truths should permeate our daily thinking****** B. The real-time Person of Christ! We can talk to Him and fellowship with Him not just talk about Him in third person. We have a first person relationship. 3. We must stop living by our feelings and habitual reactions. A. When we set our minds on earthly things we are centered on our urges, emotional habits and deeply etched patterns of sinful behaviour. B. We need space to "set our minds on things above" C. We must start taking every thought captive. Our thoughts are the triggers to our reactions... 4.
