Original Posts of : Word Bearers and Death Korps

Today we’re giving you a sneak preview of our upcoming DLC for the Word Bearers with Relic artist Matt Kuzminski. The DLC will soon be on sale through Steam.

The Chaos Word Bearers are one of the most exciting packs we’ve gotten to do. The Word Bearers venerate the dark pantheon of the Chaos Gods and have taken it upon themselves to bring the word of those gods to the wayward Imperium of Mankind. The Word Bearers take on the elements of whatever god to which they are more aligned, and fit perfectly with Dawn of War II’s Chaos Undivided theme.

For the Chaos Lord we wanted to give an evil warrior priest look, but also befitting someone inspired by Khorne. I’ve always loved the look of the warrior clad in an animal skin trophy, and took this opportunity to thow some Dark Eldar flavour into him, by way of a Clawed Fiend trophy. The tabard of skulls was inspired by a Khorne Daemon Prince model from Forge World. His unmasked and terrifying face, with his glowing red eyes, and his cape arrayed with heretical pages reinforce his status.

The new Dreadnought is directly inspired by the Forge World version. The flame effects and daemonic headpiece really distinguish him from our existing Chaos Dreadnought, and should provide ample menace to your opponents.

The Heretics underwent substantial changes. Referencing Forge World renegade militia enforcers; they’ve ditched their robes and decorative backpacks for some hard-core skull masks, fatigues, and some very painful looking body modification.

My colleague, the ever-prolific Claire Roberts stepped up to the plate on the Chaos Sorcerer, delivering a classic iconic look to the Sorcerer with the spiked helm and dragon vent array. All of this while simultaneously creating the entire set of FX for the Tau Commander. All of which look amazing.

Mike Moore is our Art Director and HUGE Chaos fan. I cannot emphasize that ‘huge’ quite enough, in fact back on Chaos Rising, if I ever needed to put myself in the headspace for making Chaos art, I’d ask myself “what would Mike do?” and the rest was easy. Mike kicked out some awesomeness for us, providing us with The Chaos Marines with their menacing new look, The Chaos Havocs, the Predator Tank, almost all the pages draped on Word Bearers, and each of the God-specific Shrines featured in the pack. 
 

Finally a huge thanks goes out to our concept artist Roberto Robert for the designs of the shrines. He went through a number of iterations (Chaos is no cake walk) on those, and just kept kicking out awesome takes. You also have Roberto to thank for the brand new portraits of the heroes you will find on all the chapter packs.

Krieg

We have a lot of stuff coming out in our next update.  You’ve already seen previews for the new Tau Commander coming for Last Stand and the new DLC for the Chaos Word Bearers.  In our last preview we present The Death Korps of Krieg DLC for the Imperial Guard, as described by Relic artist Matt Kuzminski.

A Krieg Soldier is a walking dead man, a weapon to be used and expended with as little regard for humanity or emotion as a rifle, grenade or tank. For the commanders of Krieg warfare is a battle of wills, where their capacity to fight and willingness to die are the true measure of their success on the field.

For the Dawn of War 2 art team this was as much a wish fulfillment for us as the fans of the Death Korps. We’ve long wanted the opportunity to craft their distinct trench coat and gasmask look, and we’re really excited to share it with the fans.

Long time Dawn of War artist Jacob Binkowski crafted the Lord General with a distinct and regal look that captures the anachronistic nature of the Death Korps. His elegant helmet, sculpted chest piece and long leather coat create a striking and easily recognizable silhouette that truly befit a Lord General.

For the Inquisitor we wanted to evoke a very severe, slightly disturbing vibe. We drew a little inspiration from pulp villainesses, Elizabethan costume, and the terrifying skull-faced gasmasks of the Death Korps Quartermaster. Claire Roberts and I came up with something that we think expresses the authoritarian and terrifying nature of the Inquisition and the Death Korps rolled into one character.

The Commissars were where we had a lot of fun, we hooked up Commissars on the cupola in both the Leman Russ and the Chimera, giving new context to the “Drive me closer; I want to hit them with my sword!” line. The Commissar Lord and all Commissars in the game feature officer’s gasmasks, dehumanizing them even further.

You’ll notice that the Leman Russ Executioner has been redone as the classic Forge World version, giving it a much more classic, scary science motif. Add to that the mask and rebreather on the Ogryns and your heavies start to look a lot more ominous.

The Guardsmen model is the main feature of the pack however, and the Death Korps infantry in this pack is as close to the look as possible, right down to the buttons and the skull emblems on the collar. The Lasgun was reworked in stellar fashion and the Watchmaster features gold chevrons and skull on his helmet. Because this pack wouldn’t be complete without the Death Korps Grenadiers, with their distinctive skull-faced gasmasks, The Lord General’s retinue puts them beside him, complete with the hellgun with the back mounted power-supply.

Audio tweaks have been implemented so that units wearing masks sound as such, and references to Cadia removed.

I personally have been playing the hell out of this chapter pack, and we hope you like it as much as I do. On behalf of everyone who worked on this DLC, once again we’d like to thank the community for their awesome support.

Two more things:

The update brought some unique portraits for most DLC Heroes that were affected.  The Tyranids don’t have anything changed.  The Orks have had their Freebooterz for a while, here are the new changes brought in with 3.18

And finally, I will be trying to make Last Stand guides for the Tau Commander and his wargear listings.

As i have said in the ever famous Extra Information page, i have said that the Necron forces are little because that the more complex servants of the C’tan are yet to awaken, now on November 5th, the following new Necron forces will be yours to control.  (Credit to Shuma who made me aware, and Beast of War for pictures)

Before these monsters (Lynch Guards on the top and Triarch Praetorians on the bottom) You’re only melee infantry were Flayed Ones, Wraiths, and Pariahs.  With these monsters, melee won’t be a problem.  Good god look at their axe and shields, it’s sooo badass

Whats worse than a cycloptic necron sniper with a weapon called a deathmark? I really don’t know

Our Flayed Ones got an update, given them more of a sand ninja thing with the robes…skin robes..

Yay, Immortals

And the new vehicles: The Doomsday Ark, Catacomb Command Barge, and Ghost Ark

And if you didn’t know, Chaos Space Marines are in the game as well.   The Space Marine multiplayer will play as a Class Based Multiplayer.

You have your Tactical Marines, Devastators, and Assault marine classes while the Chaos forces have their counterparts (Chaos Space Marines, Havocs, and Raptors).

In other news, we have another cosmetic DLC featuring the Space Marines (again…) and the 3.17.0 Patch ninja’d in a new Tyranid cosmetic for free
