My friend Jenni and I have finally gotten TFC back up and running! The first full edition in the series should be coming to you in the next 24 hours, and we’ve got some really fun stuff lined up.

You’ve probably noticed getting extra TFC email today. I added five new editions to the email cycle and those knuckleheads who run the email service have screwed up the cycle a little bit. You may get an email titled either TFC Full Edition 3.1 or 3.4 or one of each. I straightened them out and everyone will be receiving the full TFC Full Edition 3.1 in the next 24 hours, so keep an eye out for that. After that, new editions will arrive every two weeks. 

We’ve revamped the format a bit, so it won’t have the same columns as it did before; but we have six brand new columns instead and I think you’ll really like it. I’m so excited! Okay, I’m cooling it now.

And now, just because I’m in a food mood (probably because all my favorite things currently are making me sick due to morning sickness), here is one of my very favorite recipes. The flavor from the chicken and sausage all seeps into the rice and yuuuuuummmmy.

This makes a great meal for groups and family gatherings. When we went camping this summer, I made a double batch and fed 18 people (who all wanted the recipe). With the meat and a starch, it’s basically Portuguese comfort food, perfect for fall and winter.

PORTUGESE CHICKEN AND RICE WITH CHOURICO

¼ c. Olive oil
3 lbs. chicken seasoned with salt and pepper to taste
(seasoning salt works nicely)
1 lb. Portuguese chorico or Polish kielbasa cut into 1 inch pieces
1 large yellow onion sliced
1 red bell pepper, cut into thin strips
1 yellow bell pepper, cut into thin strips
3 cloves minced garlic
2 c. California long grain rice
1 T. paprika
2 t. kosher salt (substitute with a bit less regular salt)
1 t. black pepper
½ c. white wine
1 16 oz. can whole plum tomatoes with juice (can use whole regular tomatoes, just slice them up a bit)
3 c. chicken stock (preferably home made, but the canned liquid kind will work)
6 bay leaves
¼ c. Italian (flat-leaf) parsley, chopped (regular parsley seems to work fine too)

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  1. Heat olive oil in a large Dutch oven or heavy-bottomed, oven-proof pot over medium high heat and brown seasoned chicken pieces on all sides, about 6-8 minutes. Set chicken aside. Add sausage, onion, peppers, and garlic to potand cook for 5 minutes. Add uncooked rice and stir, making sure to incorporate rice with sausage and veggies, and cook for 2-3 minutes. Return chicken to pot, stir in paprika, salt, pepper, and wine, and reduce for 2-3 more minutes.
  1. Add tomatoes, chicken stock and bay leaves and bring mixture to a gentle simmer. Cover with a lid or foil and place in oven for 30 minutes. To serve, garnish with chopped parsley. Serves 6.

This makes enough rice for much more than six, so if you throw in a few extra chicken pieces you’ll have at least enough for eight.

Do you run a website, newsletter, online business, eBay auctions, or any other activity along those lines that I may have missed? Congratulations! So do I. Actually, I’ve been doing this online stuff for almost five years now, and in all my online doings I’ve learned one important thing. Well, actually I’ve learned a bunch of important things, but this is probably one of the biggest.

You wouldn’t try to teach physics to yourself would you (if you were inclined to do that)? That would take forever! That’s why there are universities. Same idea here. If you want to learn to be successful online, you need to go learn from the people who already know how to do it.

This last week or so I’ve come across a couple of excellent websites to help you further your business more than you thought possible. Here they are:

  1. Mom Masterminds ~ I’ve actually been eyeing this group for a long time, but didn’t think I could justify the high price point ($39.97 a month for one year and then after that you’re a lifetime member). Well, I’ve been redesigning one of my website and finally got to the point where I had some questions that I couldn’t find answers to, so I joined last week.

    Gotta tell you, that is worth every penny of the $39.97! Not only is it stuffed with all sorts of articles, interviews, and other useful information, but it has some very active forums. Not all active forums are created equal. Many free sites have forums and you can get all kinds of weird advice on them. These forums are extremely focused. They are business, business, business oriented and if you have a question you will get a clear answer in a short amount of time (I’ve been testing this aspect all week and it’s come through great).

  2. Auction Strategists ~ This is a brand new site that just opened and already has over 100 members. That may not sound like tons, but they haven’t even started really promoting it yet and they’re still finishing setup.     So what’s the deal with these guys? Just a little special something for you because it’s that time of year again. No, not
Halloween… Christmas! You do realize that Christmas is a mere
two months (plus a little bit) away, right? If this is your first
holiday season selling on eBay, you’re probably wondering why I’m
pointing out this amazingly obvious chronological fact. Well,
November and December are slooooow for selling clothing on eBay.
Most people have already gotten their fall/winter wardrobes
nailed down and spring sales won’t pick up until January. For
sellers this can be a problem since typically Christmas time
means extra expenditures on less income. What to do? Sell toys,
of course!

Toys sell great on eBay this time of
year. You already know those same people who usually buy kids’
clothes from you have children. And what do they need for
Christmas? Toys! Particularly the ones that every kid just
has to have and are inconveniently sold out in all the
stores.

But if they’re sold out, how can you get them?
Well, the trick is to know what’s going to be hot before everyone
else does so that you can buy them when they’re still available.
That’s where my friend Jenni Hunt’s 2006 Holiday Toy Selling
Guide comes in. Jenni meticulously covers all the toys that are
predicted to be HOT this year, what they are selling for in

Do Not Try This At Home!!

I was nearly done prepping TFC
last month when our landlord came over to tell us that his daughter
is moving back to town and he needed our house in thirty days (he
came over on August 12th). And thus began the mad scramble to secure
housing for our not so tiny family.

We finally found a place this week and are moving on September 23rd (as in Saturday). This week is packing blitz, but I wanted to get the newsletter out real quick before everything gets really frantic.

I have a friend who really has no clue what I “do” with my online business … they are on a very slow dial-up connection and barely use email… let alone ebay. They live in the Nevada desert. Anyhow, she knows I homeschool, am self-employed, etc. and she knows, all to well, that I can get overwhelmed with it. My husband and I have recently come up with an arrangement where he watches the kids three mornings a week and I pack my laptop off to Starbucks to go work where it’s quiet.

Anyhow, a couple weeks ago, I was on my way to Starbucks and I called her to say hi real quick. I told her I was going to go “work” at Starbucks and how excited I was about this new arrangement James and I had. She really didn’t sound all that excited and it was kinda a weird conversation. She said stuff like, “Okay - if that’s what you want to do.” After a few minutes she said, “So, you just work behind the counter and stuff?” LOL! She couldn’t understand why in the world I would want to add working at Starbucks to all the other stuff I’m doing. It was pretty funny. So, if you start going to work at Starbucks - careful how you tell people what you are doing… they might think you got a J-O-B!!

Does your lunch usually consist of the PBJ you fixed for the kids or some leftover chicken nuggets? With hardly any more effort, you can fix yourself this delicious chicken pita sandwich. Just cook an extra chicken breast the next time you fix it for dinner and keep it in the fridge.

Chicken Cucumber Pita Sandwich

Makes 4 servings

2 whole-wheat pita bread, 6 inches each

4 oz cooked chicken, sliced

1 large fresh tomatoes, sliced

1 diced seedless cucumber

1/2 cup plain low-fat yogurt

1/4 cup diced seedless cucumber

1 clove garlic, minced

1 Tbsp vinegar

1 Tbsp fresh mint, chopped

1. Combine the last five ingredients to create the herbed yogurt. Chill to allow flavors to blend. ( May also be used as a dip or salad dressing).

2. Heat pitas. Cut in half crosswise and pull apart to make pockets.

3. Divide the chicken, tomato, and cucumber evenly and place in the four pita pockets.

4. Top with herbed yogurt. Garnish with dried oregano.

This is something I use all the time (even put my daughter to sleep in it this morning while I was watching the kids at swimming lessons) and if you have a baby, it’s pretty much a must.

      Are your arms getting tired? I have a six month old and a two year old, and when I carry them around they start getting heavy in a hurry. With five kids (the others are 4,6, and 7), I’ve tried about eight zillion carriers, packs, wraps, slings, and all kinds of peculiar looking contraptions that are either hideously uncomfortable, look absurd, or require a troupe of handmaidens to put on.

      The most comfortable one I found was a big strip of knit fabric about 15 ft long (maybe longer; I don’t remember the dimensions anymore). You hold the baby, put the wrap around the front, wrap it around the back, up over your shoulders, back down over the baby’s back and under her legs, around your back again, then back around your front and tie it there. That sounds easy, right?. It’s nearly impossible to put on by yourself; plus, you look like a mummy once you’re done. However, the shoulder straps are very wide so the baby’s weight is distributed well, which is why it’s so comfortable. Did I mention you look like a mummy?

      After several disappointing carriers, I had given up on finding one that didn’t make me feel pregnant again (I just got the baby out of my belly! Why would I want to carry her there again??). Then a couple of women at church started showing up with these really cute Chic Papoose slings that were compact, stylish, and looked pretty darn comfortable. One day I borrowed one of them to try on with Kyra (our now two year old) and wow, was it comfortable! I immediately ran out and bought one and have been using it ever since.

      When the babies are really tiny they like to be folded up inside like they’re in a hammock. As they get a little bigger, you can position them so that they are sitting on your hip but you can be completely hands free since the sling holds them there.

      That picture above is Faith & I at the beach when we went to Family Camp in June. We had to climb down about 15 feet of boulders to get to that beach, and having her in the sling allowed me to climb using both my hands (thus making it less likely to tumble down and smoosh myself or her). This is the same sling I packed her all over Disneyland in when we went in April. Since it is wide over the shoulder, it’s much easier on the back. Nice since I ended up carrying her around for several hours every day!

      The slings comes in three different sizes, tons of fun prints, and each is reversible to a neutral color on the back (mine is toile on one side and brown on the back).       These also make excellent baby shower gifts. I gave one to my sister-in-law, but she and my brother are close enough to the same size that usually I see him packing their daughter around in it. It makes an excellent group gift! So, if you’re looking for something comfortable enough to pack your baby around in, this is better than Baby Bjorn, better that Snugli, better than anything else I’ve tried.       Aha! After a much longer absence than I was anticipating (again), TFC is back in the groove and I have some fun stuff for you today. WooHoo! Did you notice the new look? Kind of hard to miss really. I schmoozed my cute Hubbiness (I mean my manly, courageous, attractive, and talented Hubbiness) into making me a new template and theme for the fancy schmancy new archive/website that I’ve been working feverishly on setting up. Seemed like it was time. Go take a peek at www.TheFaintingCouch.com/blog. From now on, all editions will be posted there so you can go further bore yourself at a mere moment’s notice!

      As you may have guessed from the link, the newsletter will now be published in blog format in addition to the email form that you’re used to. If you have an RSS reader or have a Yahoo, MSN, Google, AOL, or Bloglines homepage, you can add the feed to those pages so that new posts automatically show up there right away. If you have no idea what any of that stuff is, don’t panic. I just learned how it all works in the last two weeks, and I’ll be either writing up a blurb about it or tracking down an intelligible article to link to that explains how it all works (there’s got to be one out there, right?) here sometime soon-ish. If you have written one that might work, please email it to me and I’ll take a look at it. If it’s what I’m looking for, I’ll reprint it with a link to your site.

      After more pondering than was probably really necessary, I’ve decided to begin running TFC in two sections: the full edition which is everything that it normally is minus the Repose & Review section, and the R & R edition which is Repose & Review plus eBay and business classifieds and the coupon codes. Maybe I should just call that the shopping edition. What do you think? This way it’s broken up a little bit, you guys who are advertisers get a bit more exposure (each ad run will show up in both a full edition and an R & R edition), you’ll have current coupon codes more frequently, and I’ll be able to spread out my writing schedule a little bit better (feeble effort at burnout prevention, you know). The two versions will alternate publishing times and I’m hoping to get out one email each week. Might be a little optimistic, but that’s what I’m shooting for at this point.

      Also, as a Grand Opening special for the website and because I’m feeling all cheery now that so much of my work is done, TFC will be offering free advertising for your auctions in the Ethereal eBay Entries section through the end of the month.       As a parent of 4 (currently 10, 8, 5, 3) life can get pretty interesting. Arguably the most unique of my children is my 5-year-old Brody.

      He’s like a sage in a child’s body — playing with all of us like toys and delighting in all the human folly. He’s hilarious, but I have this feeling he’s always going to dwell a bit removed from the reality of his siblings–more like an observer who gets involved just to make the whole ridiculous scene more amusing for himself.

      By 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, after our tae kwon do tournament in Chicago, the kids had had only a Pop-tart to eat since an early dinner the night before. We were all hungry and I was asking them where they would like to eat.

      Definition for the day ~

      JAM (noun): A sweet gelatinized fruit concoction good for spreading on toast and made through a process involving much pulling of hair.

      It’s strawberry season here in the Willamette Valley and the most succulent fruit known to mankind is now being fresh picked daily and not sold at Safeway. Forget apples, I think the translation for “Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil” must have been mistranslated from the original “Low Growing Shrub of the Knowledge of Good and Evil” and it was really a strawberry bush.

      My poor freezer has been lamentably free from home-made jam for several years now because our church’s family camp is smack in the middle of the very short strawberry season. I always forget about berries and am a spaz anyway the week prior to camp and of course, the they are all gone by the time I get home (cue the violins, please).

      Well, not this year!! I actually remembered last week and managed to devise and sweet talk both my Mother and Sister-in-Law into a thoroughly impractical scheme to make jam on Tuesday (as in three days ago) despite the fact that all three of us and our families are leaving for Family Camp this weekend and will be gone for a full week.

      To compound my folly, I decided that this project really should be done at my house. With four of my five small children at home (all the ones under age six). Of course, I now recall why I only do this once every four years or so….

      On the plus side, between the three of us and eight hours of herculean effort, we managed to produce 56 pints of jam and I even had my kitchen cleaned up before I collapsed on the couch at nine o’clock. Phew!

      Have you looked in the bottom of your purse lately? Hey, don’t look at me. I try to avoid actually opening my purse whenever possible. My cell phone has a belt clip on it so I can attach it to my pants when I’m out (Hubbiness got tired of my telling him I didn’t hear the phone ring) and half the time I keep my wallet in my back pocket, which means that it occasionally has a little expedition through the washer and dryer. Whoops!

      I do usually carry a purse, but it’s a little Gymboree purse (Costa Rica for you Gymbonuts out there) that would have been my daughter’s if I had actually given it to her instead of deciding in the car on the way home that it was really more my style than hers (she’s five).

      In addition to the itinerant cell phone and wallet, my little tiny purse plays domicile to my glasses that I only wear when I’m driving in the dark and at the movie theater if I really have to and no one I know is around to see them, my checkbook that I never use because I live and die by debit, my sunglasses that need replacing, lollipops that I was saving for my kids for one day when we’re in a waiting room somewhere needing a distraction but that are undoubtedly now a sticky mess cementing themselves to the bottom of my purse, and a rather extensive collection of wadded up receipts to everywhere I’ve purchased anything (by debit card) in the last three months. Cool, no? Now you know why I try to avoid actually opening my purse.

      If this vision of my horrifying (but cute) purse sounds anything like your reality, then you need a Purseket. A what?       Last year we went to see Narnia at the theatre. All the kids had a jumbo popcorn with extra butter and a huge Fruit Punch to wash it down with. Jacey and Nick stopped the engourgement early on, but not Christian…our little 4 year old popcorn eating machine. We all enjoyed the movie and headed home around 9pm…well after their normal bedtime, so it was teeth and bed once we hit the door; except Christian…he was passed out.

      About two hours into a great nights sleep we awoke to those gutteral sounds that all parents learn to dread. In a daze and stumbling over my own feet I caught Christian leaning over the edge of his bed retching. Not sure why now, but I thought I was doing the right thing when I turned him towards his pillow to finish…and it appeared that he had just started.

      He tossed all over his bed, and then laid down in it…poor guy. Upon turning the light on, it looked like there was blood everywhere…took me a few hysterical minutes to remember he had drank all of that fruit punch…whew!

      Anyway, after a few minutes of indecision and confusion, we began to tackle the debockle. We spent the next two hours showering the little guy, doing laundry…entailed outside hosing off of ‘red’ popcorn from all the bedding…, and scrubbing the carpet with oxi-clean. Thank God the other two didn’t decide to chime in. His room didn’t smell right for weeks. I had dreams about that night for weeks, and awoke to every little groan thinking there was going to be puke everywhere. Now, they don’t get extra butter, and definitely no fruit punch.

      Take the stress out of dinner with Sue’s site, What’s Cookin’ Mama?

      When it comes to the kids being on summer break, the name of the game is time, and lots of it. Here are some fun and easy kid-friendly recipes that are an activity they can eat! You might want to save this indoor fun for a rainy day, when the infamous “Mom, I’m bored” repetitiously rings in your head!

      Here are a few simple recipes that are fun and silly, but easy enough for the kids to do with adult supervision:

      Chex Puppy Chow (Tell them to try and trick a friend!)
      9 cups Chex cereals (Corn, Rice and/or Wheat)
      1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
      1/2 cup peanut butter
      1/4 cup margarine
      1 teaspoon vanilla extract
      1 1/2 cups powdered sugar

      1. Pour cereals into large bowl; set aside.

      2. In 1-quart microwave-safe bowl combine semi-sweet chocolate chips, peanut butter, and margarine. Microwave on HIGH 1 to 1 1/2 minutes or until smooth, stirring after 1 minute. Stir in vanilla.

      3. Pour chocolate mixture over cereals, stirring until all pieces are evenly coated. Pour cereal mixture into a large resealable plastic bag with powdered sugar. Seal securely and shake until all pieces are well coated. Spread on waxed paper to cool.

      Makes 9 cups.

      Lizard Skins
      1/2 c peanut butter
      12 oz marshmallows
      4 drops green food coloring
      4 c rice krispies; cheerios or corn flakes
      Non-stick cooking spray
      16 raisins

      Heat peanut butter with marshmallows in a large saucepan over low heat until melted. Add green food coloring and mix in. Pour in cereal and stir quickly.

      Spray 8″ pan with Pam then pour contents into pan. Allow to cool in fridge, then cut into long thin strips, about 1″ x 4″.

      Cut each raisin in half and stick on one end of each strip to make the lizard’s eyes.

      Makes 16 servings.
