Fall color comes to many places but those of us in colder climates tend to forget about warm places like Florida. Fall color does reach the Sunshine state as proven by Simply Susan! One of my favorite trees for fall color (the sweet gum tree) is highlighted in her recap of November where she also includes a look at some gorgeous bald cypress trees. One characteristic that is very unique to these trees in Florida - Spanish Moss! Go check out Susan's Fall Color Project post, proving that fall color really does exist in Florida!

How About Some California Fall Color?

I bet you thought the fall color was all finished up for the year! Not so if you're in California, or here! The blog Town Mouse and Country Mouse has a beautiful display of fall color that has been decorating the gardens and landscape for several weeks now.

From Town Mouse:

I've been wanting to show off my CA natives in their fall colors for a
while. We've had an unusually long and colorful fall season, though many
of the most stunning displays are street trees that are not native to
the area.

So make a quick trip to California and pay Town Mouse and Country Mouse a visit!

Do You Love Japanese Maples?

Japanese maples are one of the coolest fall color trees around, just imagine what the nursery looks like in fall! Oh wait, you don't have to imagine, just visit Tanya!

Fall Color From a Foggy Fall Morning!

Ginny from the blog Ginny's Garden brings us a foggy fall morning to peep at the peek fall color in her North Carolina garden. Japanese maples, sassafras, Virginia creeper, and dogwoods are ablaze with color. Her garden looks much like it was last week here in Tennessee! This fall we have seen some amazing colors and Ginny's Garden is no exception.

From Ginny:

"The fall color changes by the day, sometimes by the hour. Soon the
dogwoods will be bare and the chestnut oaks will be fully turned."

From Prairie Rose:

"The older I get, the more I love autumn. Crisp, cool days--a welcome
reprieve from the summer's sweltering heat--the smell of ripe apples
falling from the tree, the hum of combines harvesting the fields."

Go stop by her blog in Central Illinois to check fall color brought to you by Prairie Rose!

Fall Color From Ohio

For this morning's fall color update we travel up to Ohio where Kylee of Our Little Acre has put her trees on display. Japanese maples, dogwoods (like the one in the picture to the left), amsonia, and bald cypress are all prominent features in her landscape. Kylee's 'Koto no ito' Japanese maple has a really interesting leaf shape and the fall color makes it appear that fireworks are in the garden. If you want more awesome fall color Ohio is a great place to look!
Gail at Clay and Limestone certainly has the right idea about fall, Take Time to Sit! So often I worry about getting things done (as I am presently) that I forget to take time to just enjoy the garden and the work that has been accomplished. Really what better time of year is there to do this than fall? It's the time when the garden rewards the gardener!

From Gail:

Today, I will sit in the garden and revel in the beauty. I hope you will, too.

Tennessee has been gifted this year with a truly remarkable amount of fall color. I had my doubts for a while when the dry summer weather hit in July but thankfully I was wrong! Do you want to see a great example of some awesome fall color in the garden? Visit Frances at Faire Garden! The witchhazels are spectacular on her sloped hillside blended with a masterful mix of muhlenbergia! (aka Muhly grass) Add a few Japanese maples, azaleas, and sourwood trees with backdrops of maples and you really have one spectacular fall garden!

From Frances:

"It is a clear and sunny day, the better to see you, my dear garden.
From the far eastern edge of the property, down by the street and under
the stand of tall Loblolly pine trees, the range of hues has us humming."

Fall color isn't just a North American thing as VP from Veg Plotting proves each year she participates in the Fall Color Project. Imagine sitting in a cafe when a scene of such beauty simply erupts in front of you causing you to leap to your feet to capture the moment on film (or digital pixels). That's the experience VP relates to us in her Fall Color Post!
I'm always excited to see one of Nancy Ondra's new posts. She fills up the post with information and pictures about plants that very often are new to me. When I am familiar with the plants she presents she uses them in ways that make me wish I had thought of that! Her fall color pictures are no different. Her meadow is a gorgeous selection of natural grasses and the fall color in her Pennsylvania garden is juts what gardeners look for in Autumn!

Definitely stop by for some leaf, foliage, and ornamental grass peeping at Hayefield!
Fellow Tennessee Blogger Tina (In The Garden) has a fall color post highlighting a variety of fall colors in her garden which she calls Tiger Gardens. She doesn't just talk about the foliage, after all fall color isn't just about foliage but also the flowers. Asters, 'Sheffield' Mums, and chocolate eupatorium are just a few of the flowers blooming. Add those flowers to the fall color of sumac, her Korean maple, oak leaf hydrangea, and sourwood and you've got some great fall color, or rather Tina does!

From Tina:

The asters in the Rear Center Garden
are in a perfect spot. I may spread them around to make this short hedge
a bit larger. Asters are a very drought tolerant plant. These grow in a
partly shaded garden and are doing quite well.

Go pay a visit to Tiger Gardens!

Marilyn from New Hampshire just posted a fall color post on her blog Reflections from Hog Hill. When I think of fall in the North East I think of gorgeous scenes where trees look like they should be on a painters canvas. This year the result in New Hampshire was a bit different:

From Marilyn:

"This fall has undoubtedly been a bit odd. A month ago the green leaves
on some trees (including my biggest sugar maple) just started withering
up and dropping..."

If you are like me when you think of fall color you think of the leaves on the trees, the berries on the bushes, and maybe the flowers that are trying to hang on as long as they can. But what about the vegetables? Kale, pumpkin, cabbage, and broccoli all offer fall colors! Lisa from Your Easy Garden offers up these sights and more fall color in the form of flowers and foliage.
I have to say - even though I always favor hot, bright dramatic colors -
what really wowed me this year were the subtle purples, pinks,

It's time for another Fall Color Project Post, this time from Crystal Lake, Illinois. This is where Jill at Web Pierat takes a break from her regular blogging subject to show us a bit of her fall garden:

Now that it’s Fall, there’s less to do in my garden besides mulching,
cleaning up spent foliage, collecting seed, planting Fall bulbs for
Spring blooms and trying to get a last few hardy plants in the ground
before the hard frost.

Racquel, the Perennial Gardener, just posted some of the first colors of fall in her neighborhood! Those first tinges of fall in the trees are always very exciting to see! It's like seeing the preview for your favorite big blockbuster movie in anticipation while knowing that it's release is only a few days away.

From Racquel:

it’s the first of the trees to start putting on it’s fall finery every
Autumn, long before the Maples etc… I love the brilliant orange &
red tones, soon it will look like it’s on fire.

It's time for another great Fall Color Project post! This time our host is Troutbirder in Minnesota where sumacs, maples, and golden prairies fill up the landscape with color. It makes me almost wish I lived there, until I think about the winters!

From Troutbirder:

Bluff Country is the name we attach to the unglaciated portion of
southeastern Minnesota. Having been missed by the glaciers, that
flattened and scoured out the many lakes of our state, the topography
has been bisected, by its many streams, into deep valleys.

Thank you to Shady Gardener at Does Everything Grow Better In My Neighbor's Yard for the being the first contributor for the Fall Color Project of 2011! Shady Gardener took her camera out for a trip around town (in SE Iowa) to highlight the bright and beautiful foliage popping up all around.

Here she speculates on the fantastic color:

It is truly wonderful to see the Fall colors this year. I wonder if the
severe drought and high temperatures most of the summer has had
anything to do with it?

It could be, the trees certainly don't look the worse for wear! Go visit Shady Gardener's Fall Color Project Post!
This will be the fourth year for the Fall Color Project and every year I'm amazed at the beautiful fall scenes bloggers share.

Fall has always been one of my favorite seasons of the year. For most of us it is the beginning of the end of the growing
season, but it's also a time of renewal as those leaves nourish our beloved trees and plants in future growing seasons. As the days grow shorter and the leaves change color their beauty should
be highlighted and celebrated. Which is why I began the Fall Color
Project way back in 2008. Each year participating bloggers take their cameras and try to capture what fall looks
like in their area. Here with the Fall Color Project I collect those
posts all together so that we can see fall all over our country and
other countries where we may not be able to travel. Through photographs
and pictures we can follow the changing of the leaves from the north and
down into the deep south.

It's very easy to participate in the Fall Color Project. First you
need a blog, any blog. You don't have to just a garden blogger to
participate! Next you need a camera to go out and get the best pictures
of fall in your area that you can find. Of course if you are on vacation
and take some pictures while enjoying your trip that is perfect.
Then post about your fall colors and mention the Fall Color Project 2011
with a link to this post or to http://www.FallColor.GrowingTheHomeGarden.com so that visitors
can see the fall color in other areas. Be sure to include where your photos
were taken (City, State, Province, etc. I try to organize the wrap up post by areas). Then come back to this post
and comment with a link to your post so that I can find it. That's all
there is to it!

Everyday I'll update the Fall Color Project Blog with a short 5-10 sentence snippet from the most current blogposts, a thumbnail image linked to your blog, a link back to your blog, and maybe a little commentary from me about how awesome your post is! (If you don't want me to use a thumbnail photo please be sure to tell me
otherwise I'll include the picture and link.)

I'm looking forward to seeing the fall color your blog post will be bringing to the Fall Color Project!
Each and every year the colors and photos have been amazing! Feel free to explore
