5 Colors to Wear for a Happiness Boost

Here in Southern California, we know we have it good. The weather is mostly sunny and warm – even in the winter months. However, when the time changes and the days get shorter most of us can suffer from the blues. Sunlight fades before work is over and it feels like there is no time to walk or run outside after a long day of work. After years of going through time changes, I decided it's time to take happiness in my own hands. Even if the days get shorter in the winter, we can still feel like happy days of spring are just around the corner! How so? The trick is to incorporate these 5 colors for a happiness boost!

Color #1: Green! According to PsychologyofColors.com green promotes a sense in nature, growth, peace and harmony. Add a bold green scarf to your winter wear for a happiness boost and to promote you sense of nature – even at work.

Color #2: Yellow! The color yellow is bright and cheerful – similar to the sun. Since we love our long beach days under the sun, it only makes sense to incorporate this bright and cheerful color into your cardigan or tie to get a happiness boost!

Color #3: Blue! Blue is a great color and represents the sky and the sea. Blue also promotes productivity and generates focus – which helps you gain a happiness boost and productivity boost while you’re at work!

Color #4: Orange! This flamboyant colors triggers memories of fun and happy times. The boldness of this hue also strikes energy into your day, which helps boost your happiness too. Why not grab a chunky orange beaded bracelet or earrings to your suit combo?

Color #5: Red. This color is known to get your heart pumping. Just the sight of red attracts attention immediately and promotes energy of love – which will kick your winter blues to the curb. Add a red cardigan to your jeans and flats, or work wear.

Hello Fashionista!! It's true...I've fallen in love...and hard too! I've fallen in love with the boyfriend blazer! (Kinda funny how it says "boyfriend" huh? ;) The Boyfriend Blazer is a super versatile, affordable, and classy jacket. Originally, the boyfriend blazer was derived from the man's powersuit back in 80's as a way to keep the growing population of women in the work-force looking professional in the corporate world. I personally depise the OG boyfriend blazer, because of its unflattering features. The original boyfriend blazer was long - about mid-thigh, shapeless - think, boxy, and bulky. It did nothing for our figures except hide them. The new version is much sleeker. It still has a long length, but it is much shorter than what it used to be. A modernized boyfriend blazer will sit below your hip by 2-3 inches instead of down your thigh. So how does a Fashionista incorporate this fabulous piece into her wardrobe? Let me show you how to wear the boyfriend blazer!

Before I give you the "style formula" I want to mention how and why the boyfriend blazer fits. I'm sure you've heard me go on and on about the awesome slimming benefits of a blazer, right? There's a reason for that - a GREAT reason, in fact. Hi Olivia!

What a great question. If you have a favorite color (or pattern!) that you know does not look good on you here's what you do: incorporate it into accessories (shoes, purses, scarves or jewelry). That way you can still wear it and have it look nice on you. Pink doesn't look best on me - even though it is one of my favorite colors - because of my pink-y skintone (which only enhances the blush tones - not so flattering!) but it does not mean I cannot enjoy pink flats, earrings or a purse! It means I've gotta incorporate it in subtle ways, like accessories!

My intention for Wednesday Worthy Review is to bring additional sources of inspiration into your life that will help maintain your beautiful life to the fullest! As a Fashionista, we maintain style by taking care of our body, spirit and mind! So it is my highest priority to tell you about shops and products that are 100% worthy of your attention and that will enhance your life! So, having said that, let me introduce this week's Wednesday Worthy Review: Lemongrass Spa!!

I had the pleasure of getting to know fabulous Lemongrass Spa Representative, Lakia, on Twitter. What caught my attention about @SpaDivaLakia (Lakia's Twitter handle!) is that she sells skin care with fine natural ingredients that are chemical-free! I L-O-V-E that we can indulge in a good thing knowing that it is totally healthy for our bodies and easy on our wallets! I tried a couple of Lemongrass' ahh-mazing products and this is what I thought....

After using the "Body Polish" in the shower (couple of dabs of product in the wash cloth) my skin felt like a polished diamond! I could see the how polish unearthed a new sheen to my skin. Seriously, celebrities should be using this body polish for a red-carpet glow! You can grab this body polish for $15/jar!

I also loved Lemongrass Spa's "Body Silk." First of all, it feels like heaven on very dry skin. Most moisturizers and lotions feel too greasy for winter dry skin, but this lotion gave me the perfect hydration for my dry hands. It smells divine and only costs $18 for 5 oz.! I highly recommend "eternal bliss" - it smells delish! ;)

Frocks & Rocks: My New Favorite Boutique!

Happy New Year, Fashionista! Was your NYE all you hoped it to be? I hope so! The last couple of NYE's I stayed home to watch the ball drop on tv. But this year my friend from my hometown invited me out to her place. We planned a girl's day filled with bike riding (at the beach), shopping, lunch, dinner and dancing (later that night). My idea of the perfect day! :)

Upon arriving to her place, we hopped on our bikes and hit the beach! On the way down, I spotted this adorable boutique called Frocks & Rocks; which I had no idea would become my new favorite boutique!

(There's my friend and I cruising on the strand! See me in the back with my hair sticking up? Haha)

As we stepped foot inside, we were met by such a friendly sales clerk whom informed us of a 30% off sale! My friend and I love sales, but what we loved even more was the gorgeous clothing and interiors. (I am a sucker for great architecture). This store had an amazing urban feel; floor to ceiling glass, rich wood and bricks adorning all four walls. It felt like a hip, downtown chic boutique. It didn't take long for my friend and I to locate a bunch of great pieces we could wear out that night. I found a super cute sequin dress that looked perfect for dancing. But then, I discovered a chiffon, short a-line dress. I swear, it was love-at-first-sight! But I couldn't decided without trying them on- of course- always a MUST, when you are indecisive!

(Silly me, I forgot to take a "head-to-toe" pic of my dress on NYE, so I took one today! ;)

I tried on both lovely frocks and discovered the a-line chiffon dress to be a winner! (AND, this dress totally works for my Fashion New Year's Resolution #2: Love More....Put on a pretty chiffon dress and twirl with my love <3) Oh, and the price was only $35! {{Such a steal!}} Did I mention how warm and friendly the sales clerk at Frocks & Rocks was? Since I was going on a bike ride after shopping at Frocks & Rocks, they offered to hold my dress AND steam it for me! How sweet is that? :D It really felt like I had another best friend to shop with!

Amanda's Rules to Discover Your Perfect Wardrobe

Being a Fashionista means you have discovered what looks good on you. You've created a wardrobe based on what looks good on you...not what the world tells you, you need to wear. I don't know how I discovered this truth, but I know I caught wind of it in Kindergarten. I rebelled against my mother's outfit choices for me. I remember insisting I picked out my own outfits. I put every crybaby to shame when my mom took me "window shopping." I kicked, cried and screamed because my mom couldn't buy me anything that day. lol I'm thinking I was born to be a fashion-loving, shopper!

I think a lot of the time we don't know what looks good on us because we're afraid of going outside the box. Maybe a certain look is too expensive. Maybe, you tried on a particular top and it didn't flatter your figure. Maybe someone you love was critical when you were trying something new. So why bother, right? I hear you. I struggle with these thoughts from time to time. However, that does not mean you should give up on building a fabulous wardrobe! There's a way to get around the "roadblocks" to discover WHAT LOOKS GOOD ON YOU. Here's a few words of advice that have worked for me....Try them on for size! ;)

Amanda's Rule #1: Look through magazines.....You know that huge stack of magazines sitting on your bookshelf that you've plowed through already? Yes, grab those. Look for outfits, clothes, looks that give you that feeling of curiosity and excitement! (Signs that you're on the right track). Don't have many magazines? No problem! Go online, search outfit keywords on Google, or join Pinterest and search "fashion." Sign up for catalogs to your favorite store and start pulling out some new looks you want to try. I started looking through magazines and catalogs to figure out what dazzled me when I left my office job and started working from home. My former wardrobe was fit for the corporate atmosphere, but obviously that was not fitting my lifestyle anymore. I started with this step and found a new style I loved even more.

Amanda's Rule #2: Go Shopping and Try EVERYTHING on....that is...everything that catches your eye and gives you that exhilirating feeling. Similiar to the butterfly feeling. You know, when you spot a cute guy across the room? Suddenly you have butterflies and a surge of excitement? Just like that. That's what you'll want to go for. Whatever gives you that feeling, act on it. Grab that top/pant/purse/bracelet and try it on, Fashionista! However, I must warn you, when you start to follow your gut/your heart/your bliss, just know that ~~negative voice~~ may show it's unpleasant face to stop you in your tracks. Don't listen to it! Keep trying things on. I guarantee, you'll find what looks good on you! ALSO -- enlist the help of a sales clerk to make sure what you're trying on is flattering your figure best.

Take these tips to start with and see what you come up with. Maybe you will discover you are more vintage than bohemian. Or you favor classic styles versus trendy ones. Either way, this is a GREAT place to start your journey! Stay tuned for more of Amanda's Rules to Discover Your Perfect Wardrobe!

A: Hi Stephanie!
Thank you so much for your GREAT question. Most people assume designer shoes have to be expensive- and the heels ridiculously high! That simply is not the case anymore. Many shoe designers team up with giant shoe retailers to sell their goods at an affordable cost to the masses. The two best places you can shop affordable (low) heels are Payless and DSW. They both carry an assortment of designers at a variety of prices.

However, DSW has more designer shoes with a low heel. Payless has fewer designer heels with the lowest heel height of 3.5" - if you would like a smaller heel, I would recommend DSW.

I complied a couple of heels that would work for the most typical areas of a heel-wearing-girl's life. Most are below $50 and are from DSW. Hope you like! :)

Holiday Style Advice from Designer Chris Benz

Hellooo Fashionista! I was thumbing through December 2011 edition of Glamour Magazine and came across holiday style advice from designer Chris Benz! Believe it or not, I had no clue who he was until I read this issue of Glamour. Why you might ask....well, I believe it's more important to create your own style - which has everything to do with dressing your body shape and accentuating your attributes. Not necessarily about the labels you wear.

However, I do admire fashion designers for their creative work they share with the world. While I may not be the kind of person to chase labels (even though there is nothing wrong with that) I do admire a fashion designer's creative genius. They change the direction of trends by sewing up new fashion ideas. If I'm ever in a style rut, I look to them for a fresh perspective on let's say holiday style and apply it to my look! ;) With that said, read on for designer Chris Benz's holiday style advice!

(Tip #1) Wear something different at night: shorts!
"Envision wearing shorts the same way you would skirts," says Benz. "They're a new way to make a statement. But think about what shape and length look best on you. Right now I love a longer bermuda style- it feels luxe-y."

(Tip #2) Then Top 'Em And Accessorize Like Crazy
"You can wear a party-shorts look with a cami or tank or a sparkly cardigan. Go overboard and accesorize to balance out the casual feel of the shorts. Layer on jewelry, like long drop chains or a pair of super-eveninglike earrings."

(Tip #3) When In Doubt, Start On the Bottom...
"I love the idea of an interesting bottom as an accessory, like printed pants or even a skirt- anything that you can wear with a simple tank or tee. It's easy dressing and intrinsically kind of chic and fabulous."

Fashion designer Chris Benz is right on target with his style advice. I especially love how he's encouraging us to think outside the "LBD" box. (ahem, weren't you thinking of grabbing your LBD for the holidays? I thought so!) Fabulous Boutique Alert!

Hi Fashionista! I'm raising my pink "fabulous boutique alert" flag! It's worthy of your attention. I just received my new clothes in the mail today from this chic online boutique called Simply Audrey. I found them while surfing through Pinterest. (Yes, I'm on Pinterest A LOT). BUT I was really amazed at how I could buy several great pieces without breaking the bank. Yep! I bought a black lace pencil skirt that I can easily wear to work or for the holidays. I also bought a gray flowy top with adorable cap sleeves. I even scored an awesome 20% off on my purchase too! (Pictures to come!)

Misadventures of the Nerdy-Chic Glasses

Hellooooo Fashionista! Have you embraced this ever-growing and popular trend: the nerdy-chic glasses? So many celebrities and self-acclaimed Fashionistas have hit the ground running with this trend and made it their own. I finally jumped on the bandwagon two months ago when I was cruising Pinterest for Fall fashion ideas. As soon as I laid my eyes on this picture, I fell hopelessly in love with nerdy-chic glasses. What drew me to like them? I'm not sure exactly, but there are certain qualities nerdy-chic glasses give a Fashionista. Here's my quick list...
1. Nerdy-Chic Glasses make you look super smart!...and sophisticated!
2. Anyone can wear them- even if you don't need prescription glasses!
3. They bring attention to your beautiful eyes!
4. You can vacate your current role in life....(housewife instantly becomes a presitigious CEO; an Ice Cream Scooper transforms into a Super-Scoopin' Queen; Serious fashionistas become Sexy!)
Don't believe me? Try a pair!

Lastly....

5. Nerdy-Chic Glasses provoke hilarious conversations with your family and friends! I kid you not, my husband, friends and family did not know what to do when I started walking around in *pink* nerdy-chic glasses. (See my picture below!) I am sure they assumed I was crazy because truth be told I have nearly perfect vision. Ha!

Honestly, I think they look COOL!

But the real fun part was hearing the funny feedback from my friends and family, seeing several head-shakes (from my husband- yes, I'm calling you out honey!), and several neck-breaking stares from total (yet cute) strangers at the grocery store. LOL

The BEST way to jazz up your outfit for an evening out afterward is to brighten up your accessories AND loosen up the buttons! Seriously, stash a couple of blingy accessories (think big sparkly bracelets -the kind that you'd love to wear at work but kill your wrists while working on the computer-and statement earrings) in your desk at work or in the glove compartment of your car. Then, pair it up with your staple black blazer voila! You're ready for drinks with your friends!

Hi Fashionista! Man-oh-man, my life has been jam-packed with lots of unusual events. I apologize for the lack of connection with you! But nevertheless these obstacles couldn't keep me away. ;) Anyway! I have a fabulous trend to share with you for Fall 2011 Trends: Shorts & Tights!

Here's why you'll fall in love....Fall is known for its transitioning weather, right? One day we have hot weather and the next day it's totally cold. Kind of crazy! In order to accomodate the hot and cold weather for Fall 2011, shorts keep us cool and the tights are quite warm. PLUS! You can get creative and wear thick tights with different colors; same for shorts. Tights go from $4 to $15. My favorite places are Forever21, Foot Traffic and White House Black Market.

How to Roll Your Jeans: Flats + Jeans

When you're wearing Flats + Jeans together, roll your jeans up to your shin- (the mid-point between your ankle and your knee). Flats + rolled jeans are a fun way to add flair to casual weekend wear. I like taking it a step further by wearing printed flats like you see below!

Shopping Tip: I bought my Leopard Print Flats from Target (last year) for $9! I recommend checkingTarget to find cute + fashionable flats for a low price! The jeans are from my friend, Jamie- who so kindly gave them to me for Free! :)

How to Roll Your Jeans: Heels + Jeans

Let's reverse my instructions for Flats and apply them to heels! Yes! When you're rolling your jeans with your heels, you'll want to keep them closer to the shoe! If you're wearing a skinny jeans, make your cuff 1"- and 2"-3" for Boot-Cut jeans.

Is anyone else excited for Autumn?? I am counting down the days until Autumn is official! 18 days to go! In honor of our countdown to Autumn, I pulled together a list of five fabulous autumn accessories that are a MUST in your wardrobe this season. Drum roll please.....

1. Floral Scarves!
Floral patterns normally hit during Spring, but since this scarf has a deep, rich color-tone, it is very appropriate for Autumn.

2. Feather Necklaces!
Who doesn't love feeling like an exotic princess? I swear, every time I put one on I feel light, pretty and feminine! These necklaces range in all sizes. If you want to wear it as a statement piece, bigger is better. If you're wearing a casual clothing, then you'll want a smaller size.

3. Black Opaque Tights
Tights are SO perfect to don on a cool autumn night. They're so versatile that you can wear them in the office or on the weekend with casual clothes. You know you've got a trusty trend when it goes with all types of outfits and lasts more than a season! Remember these babies when your girls are wanting to go out on a chilly evening. Don't skip your dress! Just add black tights, and rock it, Fashionista!

Leg warmers are like socks just without the footing. Just as it sounds, leg warmers are meant to keep your legs warm while you're wearing boots! I am wearing Foot Traffic Camel Argyle socks to coordinate with my Abercrombie preppy kind of style. They only cost $10!

My Favorite LOFT Tops

Hi Fashionista!! I went to my local mall last week to use my rewards card at my favorite cooking store. When I was done shopping there, I walked by LOFT (formerly known as Ann Taylor Loft) and was dazzled by their alluring store window. I walked inside the store with the oh-so-familiar tale of "Oh, I'm not going to buy anything, I just want to look" kind of assumption. But when I saw gorgeous jewelry, sparkling cardigans, and fancy tops {on SALE no less!!} seducing me from all angles I just couldn't resist! Hey! I had a $30 credit!! ;)

In all seriousness, the One SALE that caught my attention (that I think is worth every LOFT Lover's attention) is: Buy 3 tops for $35! These tops aren't boring either- they are CUTE, FRESH and worthy of your hard-earned dollar. Here are my favorite LOFT tops I am talkin' about... :)

Slub Cotton Dolman Sleeve Shirt (3 for $35- Originally $24.50 each)

In my opinion, these photos don't do the products justice. The colors and fabric are more brilliant and bright than what you see above! My favorite colors are: Bold Teal, Cream and Royal Navy (which is a dark purple). The fabric is very soft and cozy. I really like the banded bottom. To me, it looks fresh and clean cut, while maintaining a loose and comfortable silhouette.

I love wearing this top with jeans and bold jewelry for a fun day time and evening look. Keep in mind that the sizing is a little different. If you're normally a Small, then make sure you get an Extra Small.

Of course I couldn't resist this top- that was NOT included in the sale....

Stripe Tee $39.50 I bought this top in Gray. I loved it in Green and Blue too! The fabric and bold print just won my heart! I had to get it the moment I saw it peak out at me from the corner of the rack. Trust me, you'll know what I'm talking about when you shop there next time!

How to Wash It Wednesday: Skirts

Hey Sweet Fashionista!

It's time for another How to Wash It Wednesday: this time we're talking about skirts! Skirts are one the most frequently worn items during Summer that it only makes sense to talk about how to wash it!

So, here is what YOU need to know about washing your skirts.....

How Often Should You Wash Them? After 4-5 wears

What to Know: Chances are you're not doing anything strenuous in skirts (can you imagine squatting in a pencil skirt? Awkward!) so you can wear them multiple times. Just refresh nonsilk fabrics with a 10-minute spin in the dryer with a dryer sheet.

Exception to the Rule? You can be more lenient with circle and A-line styles, which hardly skim the body. But white and silks are prone to discoloration and should be cleaned after every wear.

What's In A Nail Polish Name?

After reading the book: Live Like Your Nail Color by Mary Foley, I learned something fun about nail polish: The name of nail polish is just as important as the color.

When you pick out nail polish, see what it is called before you paint. (Just to be clear, I mean the title of the color- not the name brand).

If it's fun and exciting, use it! If not, ditch it! Why? According to Ms. Foley, the nail polish name predicts what is coming next in your life.

How to Wash It Wednesday: T-Shirts

Welcome to another round of How to Wash It Wednesday: T-Shirts! This post will actually cover t-shirts, tank tops and camisoles. So let's get to the goods shall we? Ok!

How Often Should You Wash Them? After EVERY Wear!

What to Know: Treat these pieces like underwear. Why? Because they fit closely to your body, which means they will absorb oil. After every wear, make sure to wash them in hot water.

Exception to the Rule: Stick to the four-hour rule. If you wore a t-shirt or cami only briefly, there's no need to wash it. It's okay to put a barely-worn tee back in the drawer every now and then.

A New Twist to Office Attire

Hi Fashionista! Is it just me or do you want to hit the snooze button on the same-ole'-same-ole' black and white office attire combo? It's dull and only useful when you're making a stellar impression on your boss, potential employer or on a presentation. When you're trying to stay fresh and fun with your work-style on a daily basis, it helps to know you don't need to buy more clothes to mix it up. Instead, you can implement my strategy {below} to achieve a new twist on your office attire! Check out my recommendation below...<3

Here's why this works: Notice how I used a classic black blazer + black heels with a floral top + polka dot skirt and it still looks office-appropriate? That's because I used traditional pieces to keep the fun patterns structured. When you're looking to spice up your work-style, make sure you mix traditional and structured pieces with one or two (at most!) pattern pieces so you always look polished and stylish. Keeping a balance between these two elements will allow you to play around with your day-to-day office look in more than one way.

Have fun with your office attire and kiss your black and white combo goodbye---or, until that BIG and important meeting comes around. ;)
