LIVE!

Hey Folks.

I just wanted to make a quick short post about my evening yesterday. So have you ever heard of the show, The Blue Planet? It was a BBC production, basically its like Planet Earth but it's all under water. I had never heard of it before I was given my tickets to this show. Apparently the soundtrack was one of the best of any television program. So I looked into it. This soundtrack was beautiful. So captivating, some how grasping all of your emotions at once and bringing them out. So last night the Virginia symphony played the best selections from the soundtrack, and played visuals in the back round. Within the first 50 seconds I was in tears. I can't really explain why, I'm pretty sure it was a mixture if the music and the beautiful epicness of the blue whale. This night will not be forgotten. If you have a chance to listen please do. This is a touring show, so make sure to check and see if this is going to be in your area. <div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://fictioninquisition.blogspot.com/2011/09/blue-planet-live.html' title='The Blue Planet.

Sorry it's been so long since I posted. I'm successfully drowned in school work. It sucks. Anyways this'll be quick because I'm writing this whilst switching from writing one essay to another. So let us begin.

Who likes local music? For some reason I've always found myself having a better appreciation for it. Probably because no band has ever become something out of my area. But I feel like the band I will be discussing today really has a chance. Their name is Bison, and they are seriously amazing. I've known of them for quite sometime now. And I've seen them live here and there, I hang out with these group of "hipsters" (I hate that word) and Bison is very popular amongst them. I really found myself becoming more and more fond of them. Their so melodic and filled with joy. Theirs songs help me to feel, think, and laugh. (If you really want to laugh listen to Pumpkin Song) I recently showed this band to Teh Reeves and Sinclair and I can successfully say that I had them hooked, Bison has sort of jumped on the "Mumford And Sons" band wagon. That's not to say it sounds just like them. They honestly sound better, there music is warm and inviting. They recently recorded their first album, and invited me to the album release party. I'm actually really excited, this'll be my first album release party. Plus I get to spent the whole evening with the girl of my dreams. ;) Wish me luck. I really do hope you enjoy them! If you do please share with friends. This band needs to get big!

This is the first song I heard and I fell in love.

If you want to hear a few recordings off their album here's the link.

https://www.facebook.com/pages/Bison/136989346362822?sk=app_178091127385

So.

After spending 9/11 drinking like a jackass and canoeing down a creek with a bottle of vodka in my lap, I've decided to take a week-long break from alcohol. Yet, I still devote my time at home and maybe sometimes at school. But earlier this week I happened upon a certain music video by, The Best Coast the song entitled "Our Deal." The music video was directed by Drew Barrymore, and stars the very popular Chloe Monetz (Kick-Ass) and Tyler Posey (Teen Wolf), Also starring Donald Glover (Community), Miranda Cosgrove (i-Carly) and more. The cast is impeccable, and although the video has a run time of about 4 minutes, it really does draw you in...I really REALLY loved this video. It has a sort of West Side Story/Romeo And Juliet meets gangs feel. I'm not really sure how to describe it.

Anyways after watching this video the band really interested me. So I went into looking for them and I found that I truly enjoyed each and everyone of their songs. They all kinda got to me, even though most of them are from a woman's point of view. A lot of their songs have almost a swing feel to them like some kind of "60's" pop. aha. And yet they can still contain that feel of "indie rock" which I love. You know a band has potential when they can mix sounds together well. What's unfortunate is how unpopular this band is. You know what? I take that back. I think I thoroughly enjoy them more BECAUSE they aren't that popular. Anyways. You should really give this band a listen, and tell me what you think.

Stay thirsty my friends.

Here's the original:

MTV Supervideo - Music - Best Coast

And I guess Barrymore released a Directors Cut which is 10 minutes if you have the time, it's worth it:

MTV Supervideo - Music - Best Coast

Switching to a new format

The blog as been going through some strange times recently, so we're temporarily switching to a three times a week format. Not with new whats-his-face, I'm talkin' 'bout STEVE. STEVE MOFUCKAS. Steve Burns was one of the biggest faces on TV back when I was a kid. Dorky haircut, green sweater, beige khakis. That guy.

How many of you knew that he was a musician? Yes. Steve from Blues Clues is a musician. And a damn good one at that. He works very often with the art rock band The Flaming Lips, one of my personal favorite groups. Here's a song of his just to give you an idea of what that kid would sound like.

Thus far, he's released two albums; Songs for Dustmites, and Deep Sea Recovery Efforts.

I'd recommend giving them a listen. Sinclair and Teh Reeves will be back by tomorrow. Teh Reeves was supposed tonight but for some reason did not. Therefore I will be doing a review, but not on music but in this case I will be doing a movie. I saw this movie about a year ago and was captivated. At first I was really weirded out, and had no clue what to think. But as it progressed the movie grew on me. Progressively getting better, and better. The movie we will be reviewing tonight will be…

Romeo + Juliet

Can I just start by saying that if it weren't for DiCaprio's performance in this movie, It wouldn't be the same. The way Shakespeare's words flow from him makes the movie that much more enjoyable to watch. The movie also has a very compelling soundtrack although the trailer would try to prove otherwise. I've always loved Shakespeare's work, even when I was little whenever I would hear the old english I would just fall for it. I recently re-watched this movie about a week ago and found myself crying at a point in the movie. It just related to me and my life, believe it or not it's easier to understand the english when set in modern times. Overall this movie is fantastic is easily a 9/10. And again, sorry for posting so much the regular schedule should be back by tomorrow thanks.

Cheers.

Here's the trailer. I do. I really do. I feel like their lyrics are a bit more true, but that's because I've been listening to English bands for a while. This is again caused by my older brother I remember my first time ever hearing the band I'll be reviewing today. I was getting a ride home from my elementary school by my brother. I adored his music, still do. Always will. But anyways, I get into the car and the first lyrics I hear are..."Wake...from your sleep, before your father hears us..." (if you know what this is.....Kudos) and I just could not stop listening. There was not a word spoken on the way home. It was amazing. The second I got home I looked this band up. I honestly enjoyed all of their songs. It was a craving to listen to them all. Some made me cry, laugh, and just enjoy the spot in life I was on that day. So today we will be reviewing....

Radiohead.

Ok, so lets just begin with the topic of how different they are. I mean, come on. Their first album "Pablo Honey" for me, is their worst. Just sounds a bit too forward to be frank. But then, when the bends came out...shit. That was it for me. Done. Over. It was all I could listen to. (yes, I did listen to their albums in order...I'm a nerd.) Just the way that they could be so different and yet so good. It was incredible. And they also retained a sense of pride to themselves. Miley Cirus once asked if she could just march back stage and meet them. You know what Radiohead said? No. That made them so amazing in my book. When you respect a band not only for their music, but also for who they are AS a band, it makes the music alot more enjoyable. Even today all of their albums are different, they don't all sound like the same "noise" as the rest. Which just ever more entices me. So I really recommend that you check out their album "OK Computer" It's my favorite. But really they WILL have a song for you.

Here's my current favorite

rain and jazz...

Hey folks.

Who likes the rain? I do. It's just a part of me. Anyone that knows me knows of my love towards these small drops of beauty. The reason I talk about rain is because the flow of rain and jazz just fit together so well. It's beautiful. I have been listening to jazz for as long as I can remember. My brother play the alto sax and all throughout my childhood I heard him playing all sorts of jazz. My life revolved around it for a while, myself being a drummer was in jazz band this past year of school, and I believe that playing drums in the style of "jazz" is the most difficult thing I have ever had to do. Drums wise.

Today, we will be discussing the two biggest jazz influences in my life. Miles Davis, and Yoko Kanno's "The Seatbelts" a band created specifically for creating the soundtrack of the popular anime, Cowboy Bebop. I could honestly listen to these two groups for days on end and be absolutely ok with it. Just how intricate they can be, and yet being so delicate at the same time. It sends chills up my spine everytime. Miles Davis is more of the classical style while The Seatbelts can add new things. But, no matter what it's always been the best jazz to me. Unfortunately, alot of people my age in the generation reject jazz saying it's to boring or simple for them, when in actuality if it wasn't for jazz their precious "pop" wouldn't be here. Anyway I'm going to cut it short I'm incredibly tired. Long day. I almost forgot to post. But I will say to give jazz a chance, let it grow on you

Here's a little Miles Davis.

And now the classic "Tank!" from The Seatbelts.

In the Middle of a Godforsaken Hurricane

I'm going to be brief and short, because I'm in the middle of Hurricane Irene and I'm fairly certain the neighbor's trashcan just hit the side of my house at mach 5. I've been aware of this show for quite a long time, and only recently began watching it. The show takes place in the 60's, focusing on a team of ad-men. The main character is Donald Draper, a suave ad man with a wife and kids, and a secret lover. The show centers around his life experience working the advertisement business for many kinds of products, from tobacco to spray deodorant. Another interesting fact for you gamers out there is that Aaron Staton, the fellow who played Cole Phelps in LA Noire, plays a main character on the show as well. The entire series holds a fantastic 60's vibe, with delightful sexism, people drinking like fish, and smoking like chimneys. It's on Netflix.

Cheers.

EXPECTO PATRONUM!

Hello Folks.

Today's music is a treat for me. I'll be talking about the music from all the Harry Potter films in general. I should inform you all that I am a die hard potter fan, have been since I was six. I remember seeing the first one, (oh yes, I'm telling you about my childhood again.) my Mom had told me a little about it, but I had no idea my entire childhood would revolve around it. She drove me to this theater I had never been to before. An old, little more run down theater, but it had an effect not only on the movie, but on me…Every time I watch the first one now I can recall the smell of the theater, and the old red velvet seats, and the walls ridden with old lamps. Every other Harry Potter film we have seen we have watched at a different theater. But upon watching the last film my Mother had surprised me by taking me to the original theater. I was so excited, feeling as though I was six again. I sat down and began to watched as the opening music began I wept, calmly. Knowing this was the last time I would ever get this feeling…As the movie progressed I cried multiple more times. My mom was as well. Basically everyone in the theater was. aha. And the music from these films has always captivated me, mesmerized me.

So, today we will be discussing the amazing workings of, John Williams, Patrick Doyle, Nicholas Hooper, and Alexandre Desplat. These are all of the brilliant minds that have worked on composing the Potter films over the years. All the soundtracks of Harry Potter were great. Amazing more or less. Although the first and the last are the ones that really spoke out to me. Yes it is because they are the most important to me but I really do love them. I have them both on repeat constantly. But lets get's into why I like them so much. They are all beautiful compositions not only to listen to, but they also hit me emotionally, when I hear "Lily's Theme" from the final film I get that feeling in my stomach. You know? The one where your stomach drops. But not out of anxiety, or fear. But out of joy, excitement, and a hint of sadness. The soundtracks have what seems like almost souls of their own. Yes, that does sound dreadfully "sketch" but they all had so much work put into them it would be a horrible shame not to like any of them. Each song adds something to the scene. Wither love, sadness, happiness, anger, or the feeling of it's own. That's the beauty of the Potter films for me, is that they create a world of their own, so they are able to create feelings haven't felt before. Overall these soundtracks for me at least are some of the best you are able to get your hands on. They are amazing for any mood you are in. And they add a hint of magic to your life. Makes you feel as though everyone around you is a "Muggle". There's Alex, the father, Kim, the father's girlfriend, and Sally, his daughter. They move into an old house that once belonged to a heralded painter by the name of Blackwood. Alex has put all his savings into renovating the old home, to sell it. After wandering around the garden for a bit, Sally stumbles upon a basement window, revealing a hidden door under the stair case in the foyer of the main house. After breaking through, it reveals Blackwood's studio, believed to be lost forever. On a far well sits an ashwell, bolted shut. Sally removes the bolts, and releases mysterious creatures into the walls of Blackwood estate.

As far as horror movies go, it's fairly predictable. "Don't go in there, Don't do that, HE'S BEHIND YOU," that sort of thing. Despite that, it's still a fun ride, with one twist toward the end I hadn't expected. The most notable compliment I can give is to the special effects artists. The monsters look phenomenal, and are genuinely creepy as fuck. Large furry bodies, tiny heads, blank white eyes. Fucking creepy. The second compliment I can give is to Bailee Madison, the girl portraying Sally. She's good. Not even for just a child actor. She's simply good.

Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark is a fun, although forgettable, horror movie that's best shared with friends.

Preferably wimpy ones.

Who scream. Those are the best.

Cheers.

Hello…I like music.

Hello folks.

The fine people from The Fiction Inquisition have recently added me to the team. I go by The Music Man. And well, I will be writing about music on this blog now. As a young boy from Seattle I was raised on a mixture of Heavy Metal, Punk, Jazz, Christian, Gospel, and Grundge (It was Seattle of course.) This mixture of odd music taste came from my brother, mother, and father. When I was six we moved to the quaint city of Virginia Beach. After about a year my parents divorced my Dad moving to DC and my mom staying here I traveled back and forth alot. But amongst all the moving I was introduced to all kinds of amazing music. I consider my step mom to be the greatest influence in my musical life. I remember when I was about 11 Sitting in her Toyota pickup listening to the band The Zutons, I was mesmerized by the way they mixed jazz, folk, and classic rock their album, Who Killed…..The Zutons, Still leaves a lingering impression on me today. But…wow ok, I rambled…ANYWAY on to the review…

My review today will be on, Bon Iver's self entitled album….I'm late I know.

From the first time Bon Iver's melodic, folky tunes reached my ears I've been obsessed. For some odd reason every single song they write somehow reaches me on an emotional level. All of their songs I can use to describe a different part of my life. But onto the new album. This is not like their first album "For emma, Forever Ago" unlike the first one which had a dark, more homey feel…which I find more enjoyable than this one at times. This self entitled album seems to have a more up-beat feeling while maintaining their original sound.

The band is now made up of eight people. And sounds more complete as they have now added horns and a percussionist (amongst 2 drummers) which can give them a really give them that indie folk sound I guess they are looking for. And yes this album does sound more commercial but who can blame them they were offered alot more with this album and alot more decisions were to be made. Do I consider it "sell out" worthy? no. But I don't think that they should've gone so far with making everything sound perfect. But this is for sure one of my favorite albums of the year so far. My rating on this album 4/5 beautiful, but again too perfect for their "sound"

If you would like to listen to this album here's a stream: http://pitchfork.com/news/42783-stream-the-new-bon-iver-album/

And I also think they have one of the most beautiful music videos of all time

I SHARED THIS FOR YOU

Everyone needs more Julian Smith in their lives. What better way to celebrate being back in the good old U.S. of A than to recommend something Japanese.
A friend of mine recently got me into an anime I'd been long aware of, but only lately involved in. Samurai Champloo. The story follows three people on a journey to find "a samurai who smells of sunflowers." The show takes feudal Japan and set it analogous to hip hop elements, such as beatboxing, record-scratch transitions, and an urban soundtrack. It all comes together into a pleasantly disorienting whole. Everything blends really well into something substantial and recognizable, not to mention the fact the opening theme has been stuck in my head for days. The show's fairly old, 2004, so I'm sure a few of you have seen or at least heard of it before. The entire series is on Netflix, and I'm in the midst of my first run. If you have a penchant for the strange, feel free to check it out.

Tired...

So, I've been getting into George Carlin recently, mostly because politics has recently been making me enraged. How many of you pay attention to politics? Anyone else feel like they're going to burst a vein watching the news nowadays? Everything is backwards, self-serving, corrupt and weak-minded. I'm beginning to feel like Hunter S. Thompson felt near the end of his life... I'm starting to suspect that the American Dream is dead.

There are dozens of reasons for this. One of the biggest being the increasing levels of unconstitutional action and the sheer amount of corruption in America. No, scratch that. The world. Our Policemen and women, our congressmen, our lawmakers and politicians, all of these people are to be held to a high standard and the sheer amount of unethical actions that are committed by many of them says that we aren't doing a good enough job of that.

I researched this heavily to give you guys an accurate view of what our world is like. And I have to be honest. I'm tired. I'm very VERY tired... Reading about all of this makes me want to quit. To quit being an American. To quit the human race. I can't take much more of this. Just over the past month, the sheer level of corruption in this country sickens me. We live in a prohibition that only exists because people make money off the suffering and the sick. We employ policemen who enforce social laws that they have no business enacting. We elect these PEOPLE, these same people over and over agian...

Remember the hope we all felt when Obama was first elected? I didn't even vote for the guy and I still thought the world was going to be better because of him. And now? It's EVEN WORSE! Nothing changed! NOTHING! And NOTHING WILL CHANGE! As long as it still feels good to go to your job, to drink your starbucks, to go home to your air-conditioned house and watch some mind-numbing television, as long as all that stuff still feels like gravy then NOTHING WILL CHANGE!

I'm tired. Soul tired. I'm tired of feeling like the only sane person who notices how impossible it is to fight from the inside of the cage. I'm just... I'm so fucking TIRED... I watch the debates on TV and they're all saying the same things... They're all just thinking about money... Even the 'good' ones are still just doing the same song and dance. Even if they want to help, they can't stop a system that's based around a rigged set of rules.

I'm so tired... Why do we put up with this? What's the alternative? I feel trapped and just... so tired...

...So tired...

And it would be so easy to turn off. So easy to head out to a church and get a Jesus high or to turn on a TV and fill my mind with relaxing vapidity... And I would. I'm weak. I would do it if I knew that there wouldn't be a part of me screaming inside, a part of me that raged and hated everything I saw, that couldn't take anymore garbage!

I'm MAD AS HELL and I'm NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE!

I have a simple question for you.

If you had to pick one work of fiction that you feel influenced you in a significant way growing up, what would it be? This can include movies, books, tv shows, games, comics, etc etc. Go at it in the comments. I’m going to go lie down for a while. I’ll make up for this with a long post tomorrow, don’t you worry.
Shows have been kind of weak and short-lived recently… Like whatever became of that ‘Cape’ show everyone was raving about for a while there? Where are the new addicting dramas, the formula-breaking The best stuff we see nowadays is on HBO. I think this could possibly be a very good development… Imagine: A world where TV is high-budget and uncensored, where everything is a new Sopranos or Deadwood, where shows like the Walking Dead are more common than shows like Jersey Shore. I would kill a man for that, wouldn’t you?

But anyway, my main point is that I haven’t felt excited for a new TV show in what feels like forever. I mean, the only real thing I’m looking forwards to is the new season of Archer. Everything else just fills me with this sense of boredom. TV has gotten into a rut. I blame formulaic writing and playing it far too safe with our stories. We need more new dramas like Weeds, you know what I’m saying?

Thoughts?
It goes without saying that writers aren't typically the most educated in terms of what slang is currently 'hip' or 'fly' (see my point?), so we tend to just make up whatever sounds fitting within the shows context. In fiction, you're typically more concerned with the narrative and the flow of dialogue than whether the characters talk realistically. Few fiction writers craft their dialogue to sound realistic outside of some rarer genres (literary novels sometimes include realistic dialogue, and found fiction deals almost exclusively in it). If you're into realistic yet witty dialogue, I suggest any of the works of Bret Easton Ellis (most famous for American Psycho, Less Than Zero, and Rules of Attraction. Good stuff.)

Fiction is generally more about what is interesting than what is realistic. And speaking as someone who talks like a crazed lunatic and idolizes the work of Hunter S. Thompson, I think this is awesome.

Have some examples!

Firefly:
The slang/colorful language is all mostly in Chinese. For some reason. It's all part of the cultural mishmash that makes up the background of Firefly.

The Sopranos:
Talk like this and you will quickly alienate your mother. Videotape if you do, please.

Pretty much any anime (with the exception of Shin Chan or perhaps Welcome to the NHK):
Please don't talk like that. For your own good. Only Nyanners can get away with that.

Adventure Time:

Well, that question can be answered fairly simply for most people by pointing to the human instinct of grouping or ‘cliques’. You stick to the people who like the same things you like, look the same way you do. Tribal instinct and all that. It has the side effect of draining your perspective of all other colors. This is nothing new.

Fiction, however plays a part in it.

Everyone has a favorite genre, yes? And this plays into the whole grouping thing. Especially with young children, stumbling barefaced and bareminded into a confusing world of vehement arguments and conflicting viewpoints. They tend to latch onto different groups until they find that special one really hits their eruption button. They adopt the mannerisms, the dress code, the slang, the music, the VIEWPOINTS, etc etc. And then their ability to change their perspective, to understand the reasoning behind the actions of others, begins to erode.

This, I hold, is a thing to fight against. Perspective is a holy thing. A treasured rarity that we must cherish and protect. It’s what will save us from our own stupid and absolutely mind-numbingly retarded actions.

Because we tend to make a LOT of stupid choices in this world. As I’m sure you’ve noticed.

It’s the age of lunacy and I think we could stand to be a little less lunar.
That once hallowed dream of glory and liberty, now sanctimonious and tainted by our split country. What, I wonder, changed her? Was it time? Corruption? Or did she change at all? Perhaps our perspectives have merely changed in the past two hundred years. I suspect the founding fathers would be absolutely flabbergasted if they saw us today, regardless of which side was in power. Democrat… Republican… Independent…

When did we lose sight of the greater goal?

In differing on so many issues and bickering among ourselves, I suspect that we have driven a deadly crack into the foundation of our country. Just earlier today, I watched one side spew horrid vitrol down the throat of their opponents, as the other side condescended to the other as if they were a collection of children drawing on the constitution with a box of crayons. Yesterday, they were on the opposite stance. Tomorrow I suspect they will switch again.

What is our solution here? What do we do with this split nation, that bickers as it crumbles?

Me? I’m considering moving to Canada. Especially if Bachmann wins the 2012 election.
