http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5489568/1/A_Song_With_No_Words

http://twilighted.net/viewstory.php?sid=8789

Word Count: 10,917

Official Description: At the lugubrious summer house by the obnoxious blue lake, they find the words to a song long lost. Part One-Edward: “Oh, no. No white rabbits for me, little vampire man. You’re the only Alice in this story.”

--

AmeryMarie says:

"Ding dong."

The window is open.

"Ding dong."

I have no idea why the window is open.

"Ding dong."

It's been open since I got here.

"Ding ding dong."

It never closes.

(Her window is always open. It never closes. Not to me, never to me. I climb up the tree that brings me closer, knowing she is always waiting for me)

Thus begins Kyrene’s fic, A Song With No Words. It’s like dropping a hit of acid, eating magic mushrooms…or wandering through the looking glass – it’s instantly intriguing. The initial ‘WTF?’ just lures you in and, before you know it, you’re tumbling headfirst down the rabbit hole. (For me, the fact that it reminds me of my favorite e.e. cummings poem, Anyone Lived In A Pretty How Town, didn’t hurt its chances of securing my attention.)

The delirious-seeming ramblings of Edward – or is he Anthony? – leave you falling farther down the dark and fathomless well. The clocks ticking in your ears, drawing closer and then falling farther away in a game of advance and retreat, causing time to feel irrelevant. Clocks brush, gossamer-like, against you, but every time you reach for them, you are left grasping air.

Stop talking. Ignore her. Leave.

"Edwaaaaard."

Alice is in a mood today. There will be no escaping.

There never is.

I want to ignore her. I want to sleep.

Just shut the window.

I can't.

My eyes meet her stormy blues. She smirks. "I've seen your mother. She gets paler by the day. You feed off her, Edward. You should be careful. Soon there will be nothing left."

I remember brown eyes filled with tears.

"I don't know what else to give you, Edward. I just… There's nothing left. I just don't...<br/>

Good afternoon, ladies!

If you'd like to be included in next week's post please fill out our web form no later than Sunday evening by Midnight... There are no restrictions, if you have something you want to tease, we're happy to share it with our readers (we ask that you keep it under 500 words, though). Teasers will be listed in alphabetical order according to the name of the fic.

There seems to be some confusion on teasers, please remember that if it is already posted, we will not post a teaser. These are for unpublished chapters/one-shots or stories only. If your teaser is missing from the list that's posted, this is the reason.

Just a reminder that if you find something new on Teaser Monday, please review and let the author know where you found their story!

Official Description: Edward is having trouble balancing his urges for Bella's blood and Bella's body before the wedding. What started out as a simple "Practice Fic" has become a retelling of BD from EPOV that lets us see just how much he struggles for control at every turn.

--
HookaShewz says:
Blood and Lust was brought to my attention because of the Golden Lemon Awards. After I read the winning excerpt, I told Kass I wanted to write a guest review; but seriously, who wouldn't want to review this fic after hearing it won a Golden Lemon for Best Description of Pussy Flavor.

Here's the excerpt that made me want to read;
I opened my mouth on her without any hesitation for the very first time. With a loud growl that shook the both of us, I lapped hungrily at her, dragging my tongue against her soft folds repeatedly. She tasted like sin and fuck and heaven all rolled into one. I couldn't stay in one place, each part of her tasting better than the last. I sucked her juices from her, burying my face as deep as I could, moving back and forth from her clit to her opening. I slid my tongue deep inside of her, tasting the mixture of our flavors blended together and knowing that there would never be another taste in all of existence to top it.
Speechless? Maybe a little breathless? Yeah, Me too.

When I first jumped into Blood and Lust I hadn't read the summary. I didn't know if it was AU or AH, canon or out of character. All I knew was it had to be HAWT if it won a Golden Lemon award. So I dove right in and fell instantly in love.

In chapter one we find out that Edward struggles with not only his blood lust for Bella, but sexual lust as well. Edward constantly fights the urge to bite her. So what makes this different from other Breaking Dawn rewrites? This is what makes it different for me:
Well, there I was, sitting in a classroom full of students, trying with every ounce of my strength to not grab this strange new girl and drag her off to rip her throat open at...<br/>

Official Description: Bella meets the gang in Forks when she is on her latest assignment as a travel nurse. She loves her nomadic lifestyle, or does she? Is there something, or someone who can convince her to put down roots? AH Canon pairings

--
TwiSherry says: When I first met my online sis, Aciepey in the Twilighted threads, we were both enthralled in another story, and we realized we must have be long lost sis' because we agreed on everything. At the time, neither of us felt like we were writers in the least, so when she told me she had written a chapter for her first fic, I was very excited. But, now that we are nine chapters into this puppy I want to scream from the rooftops to get everyone to read it. So, when I was asked to do the guest rec for Detours, I was jumping up and down.

Detours introduces us to Bella, a traveling nurse, who enjoys her life plan of setting foot in each state before she settles down. Forks is her 13th assignment and she usually stays for about six months in each place. She has become a pro at moving, acclimating, and then moving on again. Because she is so used to this lifestyle, it is easy for Bella to make friends. The house she is renting from Rosalie, introduces her immediately into the Cullen clan, where she is instantly drawn into a relaxed and fun friendship with Rosalie, Emmett, Alice, and Jasper, who all happen upon her on moving day. As good neighbors do, they offer to help and she invites them all back for dinner later that week to thank them.

When Bella finds out that her best friend, Jake, is going to ask his girlfriend to marry him, it makes her question her whole life plan. She wonders what she is really looking for out of life, whether she is holding herself back from finding someone, and after experiencing the feelings of joy from spending only one day with the Cullens, she starts desiring to belong to a group herself. She ponders whether her mother has been right all of these years, and perhaps the...<br/>

Official Description: Bella Swan made a choice in life, one that led her to Edward Cullen. But are her feelings for him strong enough to survive the complications that will most certainly follow, as well as the disapproval of those around them? AU human, BxE.

Don't miss Eye Contact: Extras, Alternatives and Outtakes.

--
RaeCullen says: In Eye Contact, Edward has Aspergers Syndrome (AS) which (in case you are unfamiliar) is a high functioning form of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Although each person with ASD is different, they do show some defining characteristics. These include, but are not limited to; rigidity in routines and extreme interests in specific objects or activities. Individuals with AS have difficulty recognizing and understanding different emotional states, see everything in a rational light and generally have above average IQ’s. They do not understand abstract concepts; i.e. emotion and sarcasm. I started reading Eye Contact when it was only four chapters in and I remember being incredibly impressed by both the originality of the story and how accurately Silver portrayed AS. She has clearly done a lot of research on ASD/AS. As someone who has worked with children that have ASD and done a lot of research herself, I am continually awed with each EPOV chapter she writes. Fear not, EC is not a lesson in developmental disorders, but it is a love story to the core. We watch Edward and Bella as they begin to form a relationship, which gets off at a very rocky start might I add, and watch as that relationship grows. As Eye Contact makes its way into its final chapters, we’ve had the opportunity to watch Edward and Bella overcome multiple obstacles due to the biases of those around them and Edward's AS. One of the things I love so much about Eye Contact has been watching Edward and Bella learn from each other. Both the characters are well developed and growing together. I think that’s the sign of a truly well written story. Edward is adorable in all his idiosyncrasies (I’m pretty sure I swoon...<br/>

Official Description: Bella has to fill an embarrassing prescription. Mr. Cullen is the pharmacist there to greet her. Rated M for every reason my twisted mind can come up with. ExB God help us if there is a lemon.

HunterHunting says: GYNAZOLE. This isn't a story for the faint of heart. Nor is it a story for those of you don't like the dirty. And by dirty I don't mean porn, well I kinda mean at least references to porn--such as the free TV that Emmett scores with an image of two dudes going at it imprinted on the screen in a pornographic shadow snapshot. What I mean is toilet humour, like honest to goodness toilet humour.

Let me explain to you the awesomeness that is GYNOZOLE. Edward is a hopeless nerd, working at a Target Pharmacy. Bella is, from what I can tell, just a big a nerd as Edward is. The whole story starts out with an unpleasant, itchy altercation at the Target Pharmacy where Edward bangs Bella. And not in the literal sense. Bella has a yeast infection, caused by taking prescription meds. Gross, you say? What-the-fuck-ever, I say. You know it's happened to you.

Now imagine that your pharmacist wasn't some old bald dude with a huge birthmark on his face, imagine it was Edward Cullen, who is super helpful and hot and adorably--not to mention mortifyingly--excited about his first day on the job as a pharmacist. Now imagine that he practically broadcasts the fact with his loud-as-fuck voice that you have a YEAST infection and need to use GYNOZOLE to cure it.

Not only is Bella a humiliated nerd, she has created for herself an alter ego, on twitter, who you can follow at will. @lotsa_vampersex tweets dirty, dirty messages (this time I mean pervy) and low and behold guess who is following her, Edward GYNOZOLE Cullen.

Oh yeah, it's fucking hilarious. I don't know where MtK comes up with this shit, proverbially or otherwise but it doesn't take long for Bella to have a second encounter with the loud mouth pharmacist. This time he's at her place of work, and...<br/>

Official Description: Small towns are notorious for their gossip &amp; while Bella does her best to ignore it, it doesn't take long before she's the subject...AH/AU Canon couples.

saranic says: Do you ever just need a story that contains a sweet and lighter story line? I know that I am a habitual angst reader. I prefer it; I live for that ache when the characters are dealing with melancholy times in their lives. I love it even more when it feels like my heart is going to break and then I am left thinking about it after I have read and digested the latest chapter. I have no idea why I love it, I just do. Sometimes, though, I just need a break from it, I need some time to let my brain clear up from feeling so heavy. I was doing a fic dive where I look at other people’s favorites a couple of weeks ago and came across the story Nicknames and Rumors. It had a low review count, which is another factor I look for lately, and I started reading the first chapter and didn’t stop until I was all caught up.

Nicknames and Rumors is a high school fic with a super sweet Bella. She truly is one of a few Bellas I have read that is just all around sweet, sarcastic, funny, and doesn’t want to stir up any drama. She is new to Forks after coming to live with Charlie. Bella is befriended by Jessica and quickly adopted into their group of friends. Bella quickly realizes that the small town of Forks is all about rumors, especially when it comes to the Cullens and the Hales. Bella doesn’t follow the rumors; she feels that everyone deserves to not be judged from what someone else has said. As she adapts to the new town and school, she has fun with her new group of friends. It isn’t one of those stories where you hate Jessica or Mike. I actually like the secondary characters of Nicknames and Rumors.

Bella, of course, meets Edward and he is one broody guy. He obviously has socialization issues and tends to treat Bella rather poorly at first. She feels as if he hates her, like canon Bella and Edward. But,...<br/>

I knew when we decided on doing this contest we were bound to get a ton of typical proposal stories, but the authors in this fandom continue to amaze me. We specifically didn't make an HEA part of the requirements, because it's true that not every proposal has a happy ending.

I liked the way dlpash handled both sides of this. We get the glimpse of what a HEA (happily ever after) could be like for Bella and Edward as they play a part in a dramatic production.

SnowWhiteHeart says: Alright, so my personal choice for One-Shot Wednesday is Yes, Please by Coquettishness. This was one of the first o/s's I've ever read, and yet it remains one of my personal favorites for a few reasons.

It's everything I look for in a fic-- funny, clever, and sexy with a satisfying ending. PLUS Edward's a vamp. Om nom nom. Sorry, I like my Edwards the way I like my coffee-- cold and sweet. ;)

It starts off with an absolutely cringe-worthy premise... Renee tries to help Bella seduce Edward.

What-what-whaaaat? God, the idea of my mom helping me with anything sexual makes me want to vom, but Renee doing it is just charming and blush-worthy.

"Have you two been intimate yet?"

My mouth fell open, horrified. "What?"

"Have you had sex?" she clarified as if I hadn't understood her the first time. "Oh, don't look at me like that. I don't know what you kids are calling it these days. In my day, we called it 'making ends meet'. Has your end met Edward's yet?"

"Good God, there are children in the vicinity."

"Your father thinks you are," she continued, unabashed and ever oblivious. "Come on now. You can tell me."

I crossed my arms tight over my chest, cheeks blazing red. "We're not."

"Huh. I would have bet money on the opposite."

"I'm telling the truth!"

She looked at me, scrutinizing my face. "I know you are. I'm just surprised is all. Is that your choice or his?"

I shrugged an awkward shoulder. "His, mostly."

"Mostly?"

"Edward's a little old fashioned," I muttered. "He won't lay a finger on me."

"Is that all? Nonsense. Men are men, Bella. You just need to know how to crack the shell."

I looked at her, incredulous. "Are you ... encouraging me?"

I looked incredulously at...<br/>

And for a brief moment its glory

and beauty belong to our world

But then it flies again

And though we wish it could have stayed...

We feel lucky to have seen it.

~Author Unknown

It is with a heavy heart that we make this post today. As you know, it's never easy when someone leaves this world, and as you may have heard, one of our own is no longer with us.

LASMKE was one of the sweetest, funniest and most thankful people we've had the pleasure of meeting in this fandom; she will be truly missed.

What you all don't know, is that she would have been joining us this week, offering her wonderful words to recommend one of the stories she loved for you; our readers.

Since she will no longer have the opportunity to do this, we wanted to do this for her instead and point you to the wonderful stories she wrote and shared with us.

May it be a reminder to tell the ones you respect, cherish and truly think of as your friends in our community that you appreciate them today, because tomorrow could be too late.

If you've not had the chance to read her wonderful stories - please do so - help us remember LASMKE through her gift for writing with these wonderful stories:

Expectations of Success

Script Kiddies

Small Town Gossip

The Apology

Feel free to leave any messages to Lisa in the comments below. We will be compiling them and passing them along to her family.

Every week, we close out our Friday rec post with this: "Thanks to everyone who gives us support, sends in their rec's and just generally makes our lives in the fandom more entertaining. We couldn't do this without all of you. We just want you to know that we really mean it, and that the friendships we share with you are truly treasured.

We are so excited to have these girls with us for the month and can't wait to see what they bring to the table :) Here's a little more about the first two h00rs who accepted our invitation.

caren & Kassiah

AmeryMarie: I am not really sure what to say about myself. I am 26 years old, from Washington State, and discovered fanfic quite by accident in October of 2008 while trolling online for something to feed my addiction during the less than month long interim between when I finished the series and the movie came out. About six months into my introduction to the fandom, I posted my very first fic—which I am still working on—and have since posted a few oneshots. In addition to my own writing, I also beta and pre-read for a handful of writers whose fics I really love.

I love rec’ing fics, but what I really enjoy is discovering and rec’ing unknown fics. I am not that well known in the fandom, but there are so many really excellent fics that get overlooked. If I can help direct a little bit of attention their way, I am more than happy to do it. I have been a guest reviewer her at The Fictionators several time, and have really enjoyed it. I have to thank MF’r and Kassiah for having me back for a full month, and say hello to my fellow Fictionator for a Month, SnowWhitesHeart.

SnowWhiteHeart: My plunge into the fandom began simply enough-- I had to get these fantasies of Edward Cullen out of my head. For real. I was working on writing my novel when I decided to do a character exercise with EC to sharpen my writing skills. Then, one thing led to another, and Edward and I got busy. Real busy. He's just so charming, I couldn't help myself. That's how my first fic, A Kiss Will Do, began. Just me and Edward fooling around.

Then I began to dabble in contests and in humor. Then I started reading more and more fics. Within weeks, I was positively hooked. Reading and writing became a huge release for me-- as the mom of a...<br/>

Word Count: 7,735

Official Description: It's Bella's first day on the job as a body double in the new Edward Masen film. First up? The sex scene...O/S for the Haiti Compilation. Rated M for lemons. AH

--

MF'er says: So I went out in search of a oneshot this week, and after a few hours of looking at descriptions, I finally came across On the Double. If you've not yet had the pleasure to read anything by these girls, you're missing out! Yet again they astounded me, just like they do with every chapter of Stranger Than Fiction.

The basic premise is described in the Official Description above and goodness, these girls paint a very delicious picture of becoming a body double. She goes in nervous to be doing a love scene, of all things, with the man who has been her crush since... forever. Of course she's nervous, but when he introduces himself - some of the awkward tension is released as the sexual tension begins to go through the roof.

When he was about five feet from me, I finally mustered up enough courage to look at him.

Holy mother of God he was beautiful.

"Hello, I'm Edward Masen," he said, hand outstretched. "You must be Jessica's double."

Uh, yeah, I think I've seen you somewhere before. Like on the wallpaper of my MacBook.

"Hi, Edward," I managed as I shook his hand. "I'm Bella. Bella Swan."

"Well, Bella, it's a pleasure to meet you. I realize the circumstances are a little . . . unusual. I mean, I usually at least take a woman to dinner before we wind up naked in bed together," he quipped.

Once they get down to business, Edward helps her to stay relaxed, coaching her through her first time doing this kind of thing.

"Uh, I actually think we need just a little bit more here. Just continue what you were doing. And Bella, you can start to react to him now."

Oh, right. Of course I knew I would need to make some moves of my own. But the prospect of willing my limbs to reach out and touch the god-like man next to me was more intimidating than I had bargained for. I sucked in...<br/>

Official Description: The summer before her junior year in college, Bella moves to be closer to her father. All the while adding some much needed space from her crazed frat-boy ex-boyfriend. Being there for her father comes with the fresh start she needs. (One without men to complicate it) Until, one evening after her shift the most gorgeous man she has ever laid eyes on...comes to her aid. He causes Bella to almost forget the vow she's taken against the opposite sex. Almost. That is until the realization that he's a frat boy and she's never going there again. No matter how those intense green eyes make her feel.

What will happen when Bella transfers to the University of Washington and meets a handsome coed, Edward? Will she find peace from her past or be stuck playing the part?

LexieCullen17 says: When I was asked to do a guest rec for A Silver Tongue, I legitimately started bouncing in my seat, not only because, um, hi it’s one of my very favorite stories, but also because it is an amazing story that no one knows about.

A Silver Tongue is that elusive AH fic unicorn—it’s well written, interesting, smart-mouthed characters, complex storylines, fuckhot sex scenes, and just all around unique. It baffles my mind daily that it’s not being read or reviewed by more people. Seriously, how many of you reading this rec haven’t heard of this story before? Probably a huge chunk of you. And for that, I will spend the next however many words telling you why this story should be one of your favorites.

The story starts off with Bella transferring from her university in Florida where her stalker ex-boyfriend was just given a restraining order (yeah, when was the last time you saw that in a fic) to, where else, University of Washington.

Now, just when you think the story might be bordering on some dangerous fic, clichés, BAM, the entire game is changed. A man hating Bella begins working as a bad ass bartender with little patience for gropey guys,...<br/>

http://twilighted.net/viewstory.php?sid=3434

Word Count: 39,925

Official Description: When a virgin is kidnapped in the jungles of Isle Esme, a daring anthropologist rushes in to the rescue. But will they be able to escape the island before falling victim to the predators, natives, and pirates? AH EdwardxBella

--

Lemon Muffins says: When one hears the word “Earthquake” a vivid image of natives with pierced genitalia and painted bodies sacrificing virgins immediately comes to mind.

No?

Well, try reading the fic by the same name by Thallium81/JFly and then we'll be on the same page.

This is the unconventional story of a brazen older woman on a quest to save a young man from a terrible fate: being ceremonially tossed into an active volcano to stop earthquakes from shaking the island inhabited by a civilization standing unaltered by time. And if we added in the fact that a barely legal Edward Cullen is the virgin to be sacrificed?

Now that is a story worth reading to me.

With the assistance of a jaguar that goes by the name of Kitty, Bella throws herself into harm's way to rescue the poor, helpless, Lord of the Rings geek who just might end up being perfect for her.

But there are inquiries to be made, intelligent anthropologist Dr. Swan notices. Why did the media lead everyone to believe the missing person was a child? What is the government covering up? Which group is more likely to kill Edward under her watch: the desperate natives, or the pirates on a quest for hidden treasure?

Plan A was simply to free Edward from the bats and bugs eating at his flesh wounds, get his weathered body moving, and hurry off the island before anyone realizes that he's missing... Yeah, right, like it would really be so easy for our two favorite characters to accomplish.

So it's only logical that a Plan B must be concocted, the likes of which could make even the most solemn of fangirls squeal in excitement as it comes to pass.

“I would divest Edward of his usefulness to the bloodthirsty locals,”...<br/>

nicnicd says: Ever resisted a rec so completely, only to find that you want to smack yourself in the head once you do read it? That’s my story with Elemental by TallulahBelle.

I’d heard only great things about it from one of my trusted pals, but kept putting it off. Every time she asked me if I had read it yet, I came up with some excuse: “I meant to, but I got busy” or “I will as soon as I’m done with this one thing…”

Let me tell you guys—I am a jackass, and am kicking myself for not starting this sooner than I did. So, when I got asked to rec this, after professing my love about it to Kassiah, I jumped at the chance.

Sucked in before the prologue had even wrapped up, I blazed through the (at the time) sixteen posted chapters like nothing, so absorbed in this compelling story line that I literally ignored anyone and everything that I was supposed to pay attention to. My beta work fell to the wayside, my own chapter forgotten, my dinner left cold while I immersed myself in Forks in a way I have never seen in fic-land.

As the story begins, Bella is on her way back to Forks with both of her parents, who are still happily married, by the way. She’s lived a happy, normal life with them in Phoenix, and doesn’t understand why they have suddenly rushed to move back to the sleepy little town. She’s quiet and shy, in that way canon Bella was, but not so melodramatic, which I appreciate. They end up in a small cluster of homes, much nicer and decidedly…different than what the reader assumes Bella is used to.

Finally, we came to a stop in the circular driveway in front of a home that looked older than the rest. It was a large two story house;...<br/>

MrsAC says: I can't even begin to tell you how much I love this story, or how loud I squeed when I was asked to do a guest rec for it. It's without a doubt one of those stories that never fails to put a smile on my face. I can't get enough.

Rightfully so, TNGUS is nominated for a Bellie in the category, Fic You'd Click on for the Title Alone. While the title is enough to tantalize you into reading the story, Bella and Edward's first encounter will have you forever checking your in-box for alerts.

After realizing the Internet connection in her new apartment isn't working, Bella heads up to her neighbors to see if he can help.

“Hello, can I help you with something?” says the smooth, masculine voice behind me.

And then when I look at him, I almost jump out of my skin again. Because all I can see is skin.

There was a very good looking, very naked man standing in front of me.

Shit, I looked right at his package.

“Ohmygod, ohmygod, ohmygod,” I chant, turning my head away and pressing my hand against the side of my face to shield my eyes.

“Um, whoa. You’re, uh, extremely…naked?” I stammer stupidly as my words form a question for some reason. My hand covers my eyes as I turn my head away. I feel myself blush furiously.

“Yeah, just got out of the shower. What can I do for you, brown eyes?” he asks.

What the? Is he flirting with me, while buck naked?

“Uh, yeah, sorry to intrude, Mr., um…Mr. Naked Guy, but I live downstairs and…you know? Never mind,” I say, wanting to leave but stumbling because my eyes are closed and my hand is still over them.

I walk into the wall with a loud thud.

EdwardsBloodType says: When Isakassees, a loyal reader of High Anxiety, asked my opinion on her story idea, I was honored and intrigued by the original concept enough that I knew I would read it, never mind beta for her.

The story starts very innocently, with handsome young Dr. Edward Cullen and his four year old daughter, Lily, literally run into Bella in the grocery story. Things suddenly go awry when a psychotic madman James, sees Bella and Lily giggling amongst a pile of wayward apples, thinking in his messed up mind that they are his estranged wife and daughter. Subsequently, he kidnaps them by gunpoint, taking them far into the remote woods to a cabin that he has well prepared… and then shit gets weird.

Bella’s POV is in fact quite scary, but at the same time, speckled with these humorous, witty bits of her inner monologue that make the extreme angst of the piece much easier to swallow. We watch as Bella lives in terror of this lunatic, forcing her to take various unnecessary medications which make her drowsy, clumsy and incoherent. He hurts her physically, denies her food and punishes her for things that she does as a direct result of the effects of the pills he’s giving her. However, he restricts all of his abuse toward Bella, and is nothing but sweet and kind to Lily.

The relationship between the sweet little girl she doesn’t know quickly blossoms into this beautiful, unexpected mother /daughter connection that is just heartwarming and the true highlight of the story.

All the while from Edward’s point of view, you see him breaking down, distraught at the disappearance of his child while he relies heavily on the strength and support of his amazing family as well as Charlie, who is...<br/>

Lillybellis says: So, one day I was just roaming around FF.net (on a day it wasn’t being a complete failure), looking for something good to feed my emo mood (I have a lot of those). I just so happened to look at Philadelphic’s profile, following a link from someone’s favorites list. There, in the author’s note at the beginning were four little words that piqued my interest:

Don't read this. Please.

Well, I don’t know about you, but it’s a certainty that when someone tells me not to read something, I most assuredly am going to read it. As if her warning weren’t enough, this last bit of her author’s note did me in:

All Human, All Canon Birthdays. You heard me.

Geriatric Edward and young Bella? My imagination went wild with the possibilities (and trust me when I tell you that you don’t want to know what they were). I am so glad I decided to put my curious mind to rest and read this gem of a story.

The tale begins as Bella, a newcomer to the small town of Forks, makes a visit to the local nursing home. She began volunteering there at the suggestion of her guidance counselor as a way to become more comfortable with talking to strangers, with the hopes of boosting her ability to make friends. One might wonder what kind of draw spending time with the elderly would hold for a young girl, but the author immediately draws us into Bella’s world (and a bit of canon), by likening the experience to Bella’s love of books:

There's something about being at the end of life that makes most people a little deeper than they were when they were busy with the rush of life. They wanted to tell their best stories- the loveliest distillations of their own biographies. Maybe that's why I loved them so much- talking to the...<br/>

Kassiah says: Stella Luna Sky is one of my favorite authors--her words are lyrical, almost like a song. I have to admit, though, I was reluctant to read this o/s because it's a tad on the emo side. When I realized it was nominated for an Eddie award, I gave in, and I am so, so glad that I did. It's beautiful.

The Queen of Hearts starts off with Bella, a college senior, going home when she finds out her father has cancer. While there, she meets Edward, who is awaiting a heart transplant for his wife. They bond over fried chicken and their friendship develops quickly.

Edward looked up from the black garbage bag he was stuffing bits of popcorn in. "Bella, don't be silly. Do you not know by now you're my favorite form of escapism?"

Bella sat back on her heels. "What's going to happen to us?"

Edward very carefully avoided her gaze. "What do you mean?"

"Is it only the hospital that brings us together? Or could we be friends in the real world, too?"

Edward wiped his greasy fingers on his jeans. "Bella…"

His tone said everything. "Forget I asked."

"No, listen." He looked up at her finally. "I've thought about this, too. You're a very real part of my life now. I've never gotten so close to another human being so quickly. But… if my wife dies, and I leave this place, I will not be in a state to be anyone's friend for a very long time. But if she, by some miracle, makes it out alive… I don't know how appropriate it would be to continue being your friend."

That was a sharp blow to her head and to her gut and to her heart. "Are you not allowed to have female friends?"

He smiled very sadly. "Yes, Bella. I'm allowed to have female friends."

Her chest twisted painfully in heartache and hope. "Edward…"

"Nothing can come of it, Bella," he whispered harshly. "Nothing."

"I… I know."

"I...<br/>
