I was standing in chest-high water when I took this photo. Wait—let me say that again: I was standing in crystal clear, chest-high water, with my feet on a soft, sandy lake bottom when I took this photo.

When I saw the Liepnitzsee, I knew I was going to change my tune about the lakes in Berlin; after a short walk through the woods, there it was, surrounded by trees and glowing in the most unreal shade of turquoise green.

We found a spot between the trees, where we could easily get in and out of the water. Swimmers launched inflatable boats, kids played in the overhanging trees that touched the water. They screamed and laughed as they lost their balance and fell in and we dined on picnic fare.

According to Wikipedia, the water visibility in is 5 m (16 ft.); as of today, I am in the market for an inflatable boat.

At the moment, the talk of the town in Berlin is going to the lake: What lakes are the best for swimming? What lakes are the least crowded?

Good questions because truth be told…I am a lake snob. My trip to the Schlachtensee a couple of summers ago reduced me to a deep despair. I owe my bad attitude to my origins, a land of lakes.

Lakes are everywhere in Minnesota—in the city, in the suburbs, “up north,” and everywhere you go, basically. They are big and they are beautiful, but most of all there is a lake culture, something that I cannot explain to the people I meet here.

So here’s to my grandparents and great-grandparents (pictured in these photos) and all of my friends and family enjoying summer on the water these days. Drink a Party Coke for me!Similar Posts:

Long before there were digital cameras, I lived in Heidelberg. I took black and white photos and developed everything in the darkroom, and I was just learning to speak German. These last few days have been interesting; seeing the same place with older eyes (and a digital camera—oh how I wish blogs had existed then!) is an unexpected bonus of getting older.
