BHB contributor/filmmaker/Brooklyn Heights resident Heather Quinlan was a guest on CBS This Morning earlier this week discussing her upcoming documentary If These Knishes Could Talk. The package, as we say in the biz, ponders “are Americans losing their accents?” Watch the report after the jump.

Fox 5 NY’s Heather Brown filed a report this evening confirming that the NYC Parks Department is “looking into” naming a park after Beastie Boy/Brooklyn Heights native Adam “MCA” Yauch who died of cancer earlier this month.

Yesterday, we reported that the BHB community’s effort and Facebook page to rename Squibb Park after the musician and humanitarian was being refocused to support a plan by one of the surviving Beastie Boys, Adam Horovitz, to name the State Street basketball courts (and perhaps adjoining Palmetto Playground) after MCA. Yauch grew up a few blocks away from the park.

The Brooklyn Heights Blog community’s effort (ignited by “She’s Crafty”) to rename Squibb Park to Adam Yauch Park went viral today.

Our Facebook page now has more than 1,300 “Likes” and the idea has been covered by the Hollywood Reporter, Gothamist and 1010WINS Radio, to name a few. But a funny thing happened on the way to critical mass: We found out about an effort by Adam “AdRock” Horovitz and his wife Kathleen Hanna to fix up and rename the baseketball courts at State Street Park after Yauch.

Late this afternoon Ms. Hanna contacted us via Facebook, saying:

I just wanted to let you know that Adam “Adrock” Horovitz has already begun working with the Parks Commissioner to fix up and rename State Street Park where Yauch actually played as a kid to Adam Yauch Park. It would be great to get people behind THIS idea as it won’t hurt the Squibb family….Thanks, Kathleen Hanna

Since receiving that dispatch, we have confirmed with the Beastie Boys management and publicist that this plan is real and going forward. Right now the effort is focused on the basketball courts and not necessarily adjoining Palmetto Playground.

The Brooklyn Heights Blog community ENTHUSIASTICALLY supports this idea. We have updated the Facebook page* to reflect this and encourage all those who agree, their friends, family and friends of friends to continue to “Like” the page and share our strong desire to make Adam Yauch Park in Brooklyn Heights a reality.

*Note that Facebook does not allow users to change names of pages with 200+ likes. While the name of our page remains the same, we no longer advocate changing the name of Squibb Park. We are 100% committed to doing all we can to making Adam Yauch Park a reality on State Street.

Our man in the NYS Senate, Daniel Squadron honored fallen Beastie Boy/Brooklyn Heights native Adam Yauch today with a resolution on the Senate floor. Yauch, who died of throat cancer May 4, was recognized by Squadron for his contribution to music as well as his humanitarian work.

State Senator Daniel Squadron honored Beastie Boys founder Adam “MCA” Yauch with a resolution on the Senate floor. The resolution, which recognizes Yauch’s and the Beastie Boys’ major contributions to music, as well as Yauch’s political activism, passed the Senate yesterday afternoon.

Yauch grew up in Brooklyn Heights and the Beastie Boys grew to prominence via the East Village and Lower East Side music scene.

The Squadron resolution reads in part: “Whereas, The music and message of the Beastie Boys evolved over the years, but they can’t, won’t, don’t stop changing the face of hip-hop, of music, and of our culture. Whereas, The Beastie Boys exemplified New York through a period in which grassroots creativity and a community of iconoclastic artists helped redefine and rejuvenate a city on the ropes, with iconic imagery from Brooklyn to Ludlow Street.”

The Irish pub moving into the old La Traviata space at 139 Montague Street will be call the Custom House. BHB contributor Heather Quinlan snapped this shot of its new sign being raised there this morning.

We reported earlier this week about the “hidden history” of number 139 that was revealed in the sign changing process.

Star gazers in Brooklyn Heights can note that “Cosmo’s Moon” aka a supermoon returns tonight. The larger and brighter full moon was made famous in the Brooklyn Heights based motion picture Moonstruck. Read our piece about its appearance here last year.

Why is it that on the busiest shopping day of the week [Saturday 4/28] for Montague Street business owners, the city decides to rip up the sidewalk and pour cement. My staff and customers at Heights Vision Center today literally had to walk the plank to enter and leave the office. Sidewalk repairs can’t be done after hours? Who’s planning this stuff?

A Cadman Plaza West resident tells Gothamist that they are losing sleep due to overnight work on the Brooklyn Bridge. An email exchange between the sleepless reader and outreach coordinator for the Brooklyn Bridge Rehabilitation project, Sabrina Lau basically nets out with something like – there are rules in place to curb noise but there’s no specific hours mentioned when things should quiet down so there’s nothing to be done right now.

The project, which is aimed at improving traffic flow around Cadman Plaza, is slated to continue until 2014.

News 12 Brooklyn reports via Facebook that Fatoosh on Hicks Street has been hit by a car:

CAR INTO BUILDING: EMS is at Hicks Street off Atlantic Avenue where a car crashed into the front of a restaurant. There is no structural damage.

Update: according to Streetsblog this was a result of a two-car crash. No further details were provided, except that no one in either car was seriously injured, Fatoosh was closed at the time, and no pedestrians were hit.

Today’s film shoots in Brooklyn Heights caused at least one interesting traffic snarl according to this dispatch from the BHA’s Judy Stanton:

This is one of the Bonanza Location Container trucks which parked on Remsen Street. After I took this photo of it, [it was] unable to make the turn off Remsen onto Hicks. I watched it make a few attempts, with wheels of the cab up onto the Bossert’s sidewalk, barely missing the street lamp but I didn’t watch to see if it crushed the underlying catch basin. I think it’s longer than the legal NYC limit (55 feet) but, whatever its length is, it is too long to turn anywhere in the Heights. There is only [one] way I think it can extract itself from Remsen Street which will be to go straight on Remsen, passing the 2 synagogues and church holding their Passover and Good Friday services, to get to Court Street where it may manage to turn.

Brooklyn Heights’ Remsen Street residents “Kim and George” get the full-on lookey loo treatment from home design site Apartment Therapy this week:

Apartment Therapy: With hard work and dedication their home has been transformed into a welcoming space that showcases both of their personalities and is well equipped as a hub for friends and parties.

Clearly this pair is never afraid to do things themselves and many items from around their home elicit DIY stories. One such example is a pair of stump side tables. After seeing a similar set that they both admired, they decided to try their hand at putting together a pair themselves. After a visit to a Massachusetts farm and a trip to the hardware store, they built a pair. This is the type of creativity and openness to working on projects together that make their place a home.

While their design aesthetic is relatively minimalist, the selective decor that they have on display are pieces that have personal meaning to them. In the entry, a painting by Kim’s grandmother welcomes guests while a framed posted of Endless Summer, a wedding gift from Kim to George, adds a pop of color.

ABC-TV’s What Would You Do hits Brooklyn Heights in this week’s encore episode. Okay, purists will note that the scene of the episode “Zap Wine and Liquors” at 105 Court Street is technically on the Downtown Brooklyn side of things… but we digress.

The show’s premise every week is quite simple: “Actors” do “wacky” or “outrageous” things in front of “regular folks” and we (and host John Quinones) wait to see if they “do the right thing.”

In the Heights episode, a rogue liquor store clerk fails to tell a patron that her lottery ticket is a winner while pocketing the dough himself. YOU WON’T BELIEVE WHAT HAPPENS. Actually, you probably will. Watch the video after the jump.

Tonight, Sunday March 25th at 7 p.m., the Brooklyn Heights Cinema features “The Lost World,” the 1925 classic silent film, presented with live music by Liz Magnes. Tickets are $11—but mention BHB and get 3 for the price of 2.

Hard to believe it’s been a year since Colonie opened at 127 Atlantic Avenue. The eatery’s owners Tamer Hamawi, Emelie Kihlstrom, and Elise Rosenberg raised initial funds (and attention) via Kickstarter in late 2010. Kihlstrom lives in Brooklyn Heights today.

Eater NY ran a Q&A with the trio this week and asked them about the game changing review given to them only a few months after opening by Brooklyn Heights native/NYT food critic Sam Sifton:

Eater NY: You got a big review from Sam Sifton just a few months after opening. Did you know that was coming? Emelie: No, we were shitting our pants. We did spot him, but not every time. Tamer: I think that through the Kickstarter campaign, we were very much on the radar and it became a big story. Florence Fabricant was chasing us in the early stages for the opening article, and we were quite surprised by how aggressive she was, in a good way. So we knew that we were very much on the radar, and that we could possibly get reviewed, but it was still a surprise to get reviewed so early on. But we’re so thankful that we were. It was incredible to get a Times review, and we started getting bookings from as far away as Beirut from that review.

We hate to say “we told you so,” but we told you so. The Notorious Busted Chef, Dan Kaufman, is up to his conning ways again. Gawker reports today that Kaufman was busted last month in Montauk by NYPD detectives:

Gawker: Kaufman was arrested by NYPD detectives late last month in Montauk, N.Y. He’s accused of defrauding a New York mobile advertising startup called CloudMob Media, which he had conned into hiring him as its chief technology officer, out of $20,000. He allegedly used the money to rent a beach house in Montauk, where he spent much of last summer and fall regaling a sophisticated social circle of New Yorkers—including the editor of this very website—with a never-ending cascade of extravagant lies. He relentlessly trawled the free dating site OkCupid, duping untold numbers of women (I spoke to three; their experiences suggest dozens more) into dating him. And he did it all while busily working to launch a new social network that would bring credibility and trust back the internet.

BHB reader “Alex” sent us this photo of what appears to be a City Hawk hanging out over Pierrepont Playground this weekend.  Hopefully he’s more mellow than the big fella we spotted chewing up a pigeon last year and more like the laid back chap who came to visit in the snow back in December 2010.

BHB reader “Jane” writes to us that her baby threw a shoe out of her stroller somewhere around Montague Street and Henry Tuesday afternoon. Considering our record of reuniting the lost and their owners we figured we’d give it a try. If you found the companion to the shoe pictured below email us (webmaster at brooklynheightsblog.com). According to a BHB source the landlord of 70 Henry Street, Tom Caruana, has withdrawn his  proposal for a new structure at 70 Henry St. to Community Board 2’s Landmarks Committee.  The building currently is the home of the Brooklyn Heights Cinema, which would be displaced if the plan were to move forward.

No word yet on if this is simply a postponement or a permanent shift in plans.
