5.1b2-3 Support

TinyUmbrella just got a small bugfix (hopefully I didn't introduce even more bugs in this old codebase). There was a nasty UI locking issue when you clicked 'Save SHSH'. I've partially fixed it. But now there's flicker in the saved shshs window. <sigh>.

Anyway. TinyUmbrella is now updated for the 5.1b2-3 betas.

Windows Bug Squashed

Thanks to an especially determined user (@szr8) I finally squashed a nasty bug that caused Windows users' TU to crash on startup. Apparently it was something stupid that I was doing that I thought i wasn't doing. :) Either way. Many of you have voiced this issue but now it's fixed. This fix affects you if TU would crash on startup with "LibraryFinder" errors in the log.

TinyCFW: Create a custom IPSW for iPad2 and iPhone4

TinyCFW is a simple tool I put together for a friend of mine. He has an iPad2 GSM and has his 4.3.3 SHSH but since Apple is no longer signing 4.3.3, it isn't possible to downgrade to 4.3.3 without getting stuck in a 1015 recovery loop.
What TinyCFW is:

It will modify an existing ipsw for an ipad2 gsm/cdma or iphone4 gsm/cdma
It WILL modify the ipsw TO UPDATE YOUR BASEBAND TO THE LATEST!
It will create an ipsw that you can use with TinyUmbrella AND iTunes to restore to a version of iOS that you have SHSHs for.
It is primarily for iPad2 with a baseband OR iPhone 4.

What TinyCFW is NOT:

A jailbreak
An unlock
A tool to protect your baseband.
A tool that will restore your device to any firmware
A tool for use with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, iPad, or iPhone 4S

The usage is simple. Start the application (double click on the jar or run the .exe file). You must have java and at least 2.5gb ram. (Yes I know. It's a lot. Get over it. I didn't write this to be massively distributed. I wrote this for a friend and am now just sharing it with everyone). Once the window comes up, click the top button and choose an ipsw for which you have SHSHs for. The app will scan it and tell you the firmware and baseband versions in the ipsw you selected and the firmware and baseband versions that will be in the target ipsw when you click the second button. If you're ready, click 'Save Target IPSW'. This will take a minute or two and when it is finished, you will have a file named:

<your original ipsw name>.bbupdate.ipsw.

You can use this ipsw with iTunes and TinyUmbrella to restore your iPad2 GSM/CDMA back to say 4.3.3 (if you have 4.3.3 SHSH).

This is a VERY initial release. I never intended on it being a massively supported tool. It's just something I used in passing. If it helps you great! This functionality will exist in far more robust form when I finally ever release TinyPwn.

APTicket update

I've pushed a version of TinyUmbrella that will add an ApNonce to the APTicket request. There is no simple way to handle saving both types of SHSH (one with no ApNonce in the request and one with an ApNonce in the request). At least, there is no simple way for me to do it in the time that I have available for such a change.

In order to be the ABSOLUTE safest, your best bet would be to zip up your .shsh directory and put it in a safe place. Normally I would do something to save this for you but it would be a rather bit TU change for me to manage saving two types of the same SHSH version.

I will keep you posted as I discover more information about what details are and are not important.

5.1b1 Support added

Before you ask; Yes a solution for the 5.x firmware nonce is being investigated... None of us have a working solution yet though. Hang tight.

I have a couple trails and ideas I am trying out for 4.x baseband based restores to avoid 10xx errors. Until then save your signatures as you will never know when they may come in handy...

TinyPwn update: I've not had much time in the past month to work on this. Real life drama, work, etc have taken much of my time. I still intend on a release... eventually... :P Effectively it'll just have to be done when it's done...

Tentative iOS 5.0.1 Support

Even though there is still no working solution for restoring 5.x on iPhone 4S I have released a 5.01.00 so you can at least save 5.0.1 SHSH. I have added tentative support for at least saving 5.0.1 SHSHs for iPhone 4S but as of now we are unable to use them fully.
As soon as more information is available I will update.

iOS 5 is out - Be patient

With the release of iOS 5 many of you are excited to make the jump from 4.x -> 5.0. There are a couple important things to keep in mind:

There is no untethered jailbreak... yet.
The tethered jailbreak works but Cydia/MobileSubstrate and the tweaks that use MobileSubstrate still have some moderate bugs. (Being worked on now)
iOS 5 contains a whole new baseband. This means that those of you on iPad2 GSM/CDMA be VERY wary. Once you perform ANY kind of restore, if apple is no longer signing that firmware, you will be STUCK in recovery with no way of getting out. (This is because there is NO public bootrom exploit for iPad 2)

Also, if you rely on unlocks STAY PUT until Dev-Team/iH8sn0w updates PwnageTool/redsn0w/sn0wbreeze to support custom firmware!

SHSH playback won't work for iOS 5.0+. This means that restoring iOS 5 will not work the way it did with iOS 4 and below.

Note that you should still be able to use your SHSH for any iOS 3 or iOS 4 version without any problems.

Dev-Team and Chronic Dev Team are working on their (and our) respective tools to solve most (if not all) of those issues. Be patient as the exploit fairy isn't playing very nice this time around.

AppleTV -Real- 4.3 support (8F455)

I finally added 4.3 (real 4.3) support for apple tv. Sorry for the delay folks. Looking forward, I should have a bit more free time to work on finally working on the TU rewrite! :D
As always, thank you for your feedback. I'm working on a few of the common issues that some of you are facing with the current app. (More descriptive error messages, hopefully fewer updates :), better mac/linux/windows support, etc)
TinyPwn is still in progress, I have the TU rewrite and TinyPwn based on the same codebase. As I move forward it is looking more and more like they will both do the same thing. I'm still deciding if they should, in fact, be two separate apps. We'll see. I'm open for suggestions from you guys though.

5.0 beta 3-6 support

4.3.5 Support AND Optional iPhone 4 Baseband Update

I'll probably regret this but this newest version of TU (5.00.07) will allow you to choose whether or not to update your iPhone 4's baseband. This new feature comes with a catch:

First, the version you WANT to restore to and the version Apple is currently signing must BOTH have the same baseband. This is important or else the baseband update will not work and you will get a 10xx error and need to use fixrecovery. (Works for iPhone 4 - will not work for iPad 2)
Second, you need to realize that checking the box WILL UPDATE YOUR BASEBAND.
Third, I'm working on a simple tool that will allow you to create a pseudo-custom firmware mixing a new baseband with an older iOS version (one that is jailbreakable for example). This feature exists in the TinyUmbrella rewrite but does not yet exist in the older codebase. SORRY! I'm working on it!

I do not save your 'UPDATE iPHONE 4 BASEBAND' setting. If you wish to restore while updating/restoring your iPhone 4 baseband you must check that box every single time you run TinyUmbrella. It is just safer that way.

Also, iPad 2 users can still restore to 4.3.3 if they have their 4.3.3 SHSH. Just 'Start TSS Server' and then start up iTunes and restore your 4.3.3 ipsw. TinyUmbrella should help you restore without a 10xx error.

iPad 2 4.3.x Respite

I've updated TinyUmbrella for iPad 2 GSM/CDMA users allowing them to restore 4.3.x without the fear of the recovery loop. Assuming you have 4.3, 4.3.1, 4.3.2, or 4.3.3 SHSHs and restore to one of those versions, TU will allow the restore to complete successfully.
It is important to note that I added this functionality so that iPad 2 users wouldn't be left without a way to downgrade to 4.3-4.3.3. It is also important to note that this functionality will only remain for so long as Apple signs the current firmware (4.3.4). Use it while you can! :)

iOS 4.3.4 / 4.2.9 Released - Avoid it

Apple has finally come out with their 'fix' for the pdf vulnerability that JailbreakMe 3.0 uses to jailbreak devices. In proper good form, @comex has released a much better* fix for the vulnerability which also incidentally allows you to stay jailbroken :)
I've updated TinyUmbrella to save 4.3.4 SHSHs (as well as the other ones Apple is still signing). So grab the latest if you want to save 4.3.4 for nothing else than for the sake of completeness.

As always, if you are having issues, Uncheck "Request SHSH from Cydia" in the advanced tab!

iOS 5.0b3 Support and String encoding bugfix

Fixed a stupid name encoding bug where folks would see their device name show up like this: "John‚Äôs iPad" instead of "John's iPad". It was a stupid oversight on my part. Well it's fixed now.
Also, 5.0b3 support is included. Enjoy.

If you are unable to save your SHSH: Advanced -> Uncheck "Request SHSH from Cydia" -> Select the appropriate Device from the left panel -> Save SHSH

Ooops. iPhone 4 CDMA Fix

For those of you with an iPhone 4 CDMA, grab the 5.00.02 update. I fat-fingered the save filename of the 5.0b2 shsh file. Luckily, Apple is still signing 5.0b1 so go regrab it and you'll be fine. (Make sure the Overwrite SHSH option is SELECTED!)

If any of you are having issues saving SHSH go to Advanced -> Uncheck 'Request SHSH from Cydia' -> Apply Changes -> Click Save SHSH.

If that doesn't work, try restarting the app and trying again.

UPDATE: Comex suggested some pretty good ideas. I've implemented them and put them in a small update. Enjoy.

A Quick Answer...

I've gotten MANY emails about this. I've decided to just answer the question here instead of replying to over 100 emails about the problem some of you are facing. Many of you are saving your SHSHs which is a very good thing; without them you have no chance ever of restoring a particular firmware. One thing to keep in mind though, if you have a newer device (iPhone 4, iPad 3G, iPad 2 CDMA or GSM) your device has a SHSH protected baseband. Because of how Apple implemented baseband SHSH verification it is not possible to replay a baseband SHSH and restore with it. iOS SHSH up to and including 4.3.3 restore fine via SHSH replay (this is what TinyUmbrella does). However, your device fails to restore the baseband. This causes a 'panic' and the device does not 'complete' the restore process. This leaves the device in a recovery loop because a crucial step is omitted (by the restore process on purpose).

The way around this is to run a special bit of software called a ramdisk which contains instructions to the device to 'finish' the restore process and allow it to run properly. The important thing to note is that in order for this ramdisk to work, we must have an iBoot or bootrom level exploit in order to force the device to accept the ramdisk so we can do what's necessary to run the instructions to fix the restore. Without an exploit like that, it is not possible.

The sad reality is that though JailbreakMe 3.0 is amazing and plain awesome, without a bootrom or iBoot level exploit we will not be able to restore back to 4.3.3 on iPad 2 GSM or CDMA because there is currently no public iBoot or bootrom level exploit.

This is why fixrecovery will not work for you on iPad 2 GSM or CDMA... yet.

iOS 5.0b2 Support

I'll never understand the fascination people have with beta SHSHs. I've updated TinyUmbrella for 5.0b2.
As a small favor to those of you with microscopic screens I've also resized the application to a whopping 670 px vertical size. If this doesn't work on your screen, then you need to pony up for a better computer; that's all there is to it.

I've also fixed a couple nasty bugs regarding the log not being descriptive about what version you are not eligible for as well as getting a 'in process' message after changing from cydia to apple.

TinyUmbrella 5 (Beta 1 support)

TinyUmbrella now supports 5.0b1 for all devices. I've added a few nag messages to remind people to update their settings. "Request SHSH from Cydia" and "Set Hosts to Cydia on Exit" should be disabled by users as soon as possible especially if you are having issues saving your SHSH. Cydia is ramping down it's proxy service and will eventually offer it no more. It will continue to host SHSHs and I'm working on the new TinyUmbrella which will integrate with those new features.

I'll post updates here and on twitter.

Also note that if you preserve your baseband with TinyUmbrella and go to 5.0b1, you will not be able to 'fixrecovery' until I am able to update it. Sorry - I just don't have time to fix it at this moment.

AppleTV 4.3 (4.2.2) support

I've been trying to get the new TU out the door but stumbling blocks have been set in my way. As a result I needed to push this, the older version of TU, with AppleTV 4.3 (4.2.2) support.

Note that you need to go into Advanced options and uncheck the box that says 'Request SHSH from Cydia' and then click 'Apply Changes' in order to save your SHSHs. This is because Cydia is not able to act as a proxy for your SHSH signatures.

I'm working on the new TinyUmbrella which will have many features that you all have been waiting for. Bear with me :)
