TinyUmbrella 6.13.00 supports iOS 6.1.3 and the relevant devices. I've also fixed a nagging bug that windows users have reported (ClassNotFoundException on Platform).

Some of you know that I've been working on a jailbreak tweak. I spent a few hours putting together a Pandora song tagger/saver/importer.

EDIT:

As recording radio* for personal at-home use is protected by law, I am creating a private repo which will host my tweak.

6.1.2 Support Update

TinyUmbrella has been updated to work with iOS 6.1.2 on relevant devices. Make sure you don't update to 6.1.3 when it drops. I wasn't able to get 6.1.3 beta included (I just got too busy). But if you desire to keep your jailbreak, avoid 6.1.3 like the plague.

6.0.2 and 6.1 support for all relevant devices has been added. Sorry for the delay. I'm still working on the rewrite that will include auto updating and much cleaner code. I'll post more details as I get closer to completion. I have a feeling I'll be making at least some of the modules open source on either github or bitbucket.

I've updated TU to support iOS 6 and 6.0.1. The new iPad mini and iPad 4 are also supported as well as the new iphone 4 stealth revision.

Sorry for the delay folks. I'm still working on some pretty dang well needed changes to TU. The wait will be worth it...

EDIT: I just fixed a small cosmetic issue where I 6.0.1 SHSHs were showing up as 6.0 SHSHs. This is for the iPhone 4S and the iPad 2 CDMA.

Sorry for the delay folks... with funerals and travel and changing jobs I've had quite the summer. I've updated TU for apple tv 5.0.2 (sorry for the wait!) as well as all of the iOS 6 betas. I've had to change the way the OSX app is packaged. No more installer for now as Gatekeeper sucks more than taxes.

So now it is a simple zip but you will have to give your admin password at the first launch (it shouldn't ask for it again after first launch).

iPhone 5 and iPod 5

Once the iPhone 5 and iPod 5 are out, TU will support saving SHSHs for them. I'm looking forward to playing with both of these devices... probably as much as you guys are. Remember to be patient with the jailbreak as the team will have a lot of work ahead of them.

Where's semaphore? I've been quite busy completely reworking the plumbing of TU. I know I've been saying it for a long time but with how little spare time I have, (wife + family: 3 kids all in 2 sports + teaching + work) I've been nibbling at it slowly. Trust me. My wife would attest to this: I have been working on the rewrite :D

I've gotten the bare framework set for the TU rewrite but I want a more complete solution before I release. The new TU will support all the things that the old version supported with the addition of restoring custom and stock firmware without iTunes. I have run into the same snags that everyone else has run into that has tried this but I have a few ideas.

You guys are awesome. Thank you for being the coolest group of people I have ever associated with.

If you haven't jailbroken iOS 5.1.1 go get absinthe 2.0.x (link to the right) or redsn0w and jailbreak and make sure you save your 5.1.1 SHSH for when 6.0 drops.

5.1.1 Jailbreak

Planetbeing, pod2g, and members of cdev are on their way to the HitB venue in Amsterdam. I wish I could have joined with them and been a part of the fun. This week is going to be very big for jailbreakers and newcomers to iOS devices stuck on 5.1.1 without any jailbreak.

These guys deserve your donations and your thanks. Pod and nikias did some amazing things. Planetbeing stepped in and resurrected some 'old' things to make them useful for this jailbreak.

Why Jailbreak?

I get this question asked of me many times a week. I've decided to throw a couple great reasons:

Customization - I can change any aesthetic thing I want on my phone
Broader App Base - I can install apps that apple approves AND apps that apple does not approve.
Control - This phone is mine. No matter what anyone says, I know what's best for my phone
Principle - I'm a hacker at heart. I love being able to tinker. Jailbreaking is the only way you can add tools such as SSH to your device.

Next time someone asks you, 'Why do you jailbreak?'. You can use any or all of those simple (enough for your mom to understand them) reasons.

On Friday I got to experience what many have during this recession. I got 'let go'. It doesn't bother me that the company I worked with let me go. I'm a contractor. I understand the nature of the relationship. They pay me handsomely and in return they have the right to let me go for whatever reason whenever they feel like it.

What bothers me is the classless way they did it. I was sent an ominous meeting invite with just me and my boss attending... at 2:30pm... on a Friday. That left me with the whole day wondering what the hell my boss would want to talk to me about.

I had been with that company for almost 4 years and had bled, sweat, wept, worked, slaved for them during that time. I helped deliver (save) many projects. I didn't expect much. When I was told 'today is your last day at <blank>', I was also informed that I would not even be allowed to go back to my cube to collect any of my personal items. I had to depend on this company, which clearly lacks class and integrity, to deliver to me my personal items. By the way, they accidentally kept some of my personal items; an apple bluetooth keyboard, a router, etc.

That is what was so pathetic. After working for them for so long, I was literally walked out the door as if I was somehow caught doing something illegal (I wasn't and never had done anything untoward). The only thing I was missing were handcuffs.

The hypocrisy is great. If I were to leave them, I would have to give them two-four weeks notice. But they give me zero notice and expect me to be thankful.

I'm not vengeful. In-fact, I've been greeted with a great deal of interest from different companies. I see this as a great opportunity. I'm just sad that a company I worked with for so long was so short-sighted to treat someone in such an inhuman way.

This gives me some time to work on more fun projects anyway :)

Save your BBTickets... iPad edition

Sorry for the multiple downloads in a short amount of time! I needed to be sure that the iPhone BBTicket stuff was working properly before I pushed out the iPad BBTicket stuff.

To get your BBTicket:

You need to have an iPhone4 or iPad 3G or newer (4, 4s, 4 CDMA, iPad 3G, iPad 2 3G, iPad 2 CDMA, iPad 3 GSM, iPad 3 CDMA)
Go to Advanced -> Check "Overwrite existing SHSH files on "Save SHSH"
Make sure "Request SHSH from Cydia" is UNCHECKED.

With the new iPad 3 and Apple TV 3, it's been quite busy. Add to that all the cool new information surrounding a few new iOS 5.1 jailbreaks and we have quite the party.

TinyUmbrella now has support for saving 5.1 SHSH for Apple TV 3 and the iPad 3 (all versions). As of now we still cannot restore them but we are working on getting that working from a bunch of angles. I'll let you know more when I do.

I've made a small change to the device list, it is now sorted alphabetically for those of you with many devices that have had difficulty finding the devices in the haphazard order it used to be in.

TU Update

I've finally found some time and did a little bit of reworking on some of the issues that are bugging me with TU. I have a working rewrite of the entire guts of the application working, I just don't have a UI to hook it up to :) Once I get the UI set up nicely I'll be releasing a new version of TU that will be much simpler and cleaner. (Also less crash prone)
I'm thinking Friday (2/17) at the latest... Let's see how close I can get that... (I always regret putting a date to an update)

With the quiet time between jailbreak and iOS version, make sure you get your SHSHs saved. I've been working on the TinyUmbrella rewrite (albeit sparingly due to real life demands). It's important to make sure you have your 5.0.1 SHSHs tucked away safe. There is no guarantee that we'll have things this good again.
