The best known Pacific salmon, sockeye are the most sought after for their superior flesh, colour and quality. Their rich oil content and red colour make them a favourite with the Canadian and international public.

If the early signals are correct, the Fraser River could have the biggest salmon run in B.C. history this summer, with up to 72 million sockeye returning. That would be more than double the record number that came back in 2010, when about 30 million sockeye flooded into the Fraser, overwhelming fish plants with such bounty they ran out of ice and storage boxes.
Good ocean conditions for salmon in the past two years have resulted in forecasts of big runs all along the West Coast, extending into the United States, where officials recently predicted three million Chinook and Coho for the Columbia River.

But the Fraser is expected to get the biggest return because the sockeye coming back are the progeny of the 2010 run, which was the largest in nearly 100 years. Ocean conditions have been very good for salmon for the past three years, and a record number of young sockeye migrated out of the Fraser in the spring of 2012.

It was a fantastic weekend for the annual Victoria Dragon Boat Festival this year, with great crowds and plenty of sunshine for the final races on Sunday afternoon. We saw our share of paddlers and spectators down at Fisherman’s Wharf between races, with people hopping on and off the Victoria Harbour Ferries and watching many of the racers set new speed records for the Inner Harbour — including Team Cream Powered from our very own Jackson’s Ice Cream.

We’ve always been proud to be part of the fantastic community that makes up Fisherman’s Wharf in downtown Victoria. The Float Home Village is full of personality and history, and fun to explore at any time of the year — we love talking to the home owners. There’s even a new floating B&B to be opened soon. Wouldn’t that be a great place to stay?

Then there’s our own little population of sea life, including harbour seals and river otters who frequently come up to check on their human visitors. They may be cute, but we often have to warn people not to feed the otters in particular, as they can get aggressive. On the other hand, the seals are fine, and you can even watch them from home on the Wharf’s online seal cam (the best time to watch during the summer is between 10 am and 6 pm).

And of course, we have all the other great eateries we share our docks with: Barb’s Fish & Chips, Grilligans BBQ, Jackson’s Ice Cream, Hi Gear Crab Sales, Moka House Coffee, and our new neighbour Rockn’ Rolls sushi, who are 100% committed to sustainable fishing practices just like us!

Eagle Wing Whale Watching and Kelp Reef Kayaking offer great tours as well, and not a few kayakers were out at a safe distance on the water to watch the races go by. Prime seating, if you ask us. Then when the fun is over, it’s easy to come back and grab a bite to eat while watching the bigger ships go by.

What better way to spend a weekend?
