Thank goodness we had a boy. When it came to choosing a name for baby Fix-It, our boy name was mutually agreed upon long before I was even pregnant. A girl name? ohmylawd.

Do you have one of those husbands whose only contribution to baby naming was saying "no"? I mean, really, if you are going to say no to my 1,002 ideas you have to at least come up with a suggestion. "Annie. I had a crush on an Annie in 3rd grade" he offered. Great, honey. Let's name our imaginary daughter after your third grade crush. How meaningful.

So, as I said, thank goodness we had a boy. We'll have to save the Amelia/Finley/Emerson/Eloise/Olivia/Quinn/Kate debate for another day.

Because baby Fix-It's name is unique (but not unheard of) here are some answers to questions I frequently receive:

Did you go to school there? Is that where you met your husband?
Nope. And "Northwestern" doesn't have quite the same ring to it.

     Is it a family name?
Yes. It's my maiden name.

So, are you southern? That's a really southern thing to do.
Nope. Not in the least bit. But we loved the idea of using a family name.

     Does he have a nickname?
For now, we mostly use his full name. I REALLY want him to be called "Ford", which I think he'll grow into once he's a little older. Sometimes Mr. Fix-It calls him "Stanny" which is adorable and 100% awful.

     How did you pick it?
I have known people to use maiden names somewhere in their kid's name - first, middle, hyphenated. I really liked the idea of using a name that had meaning, especially since my father and his brother only had daughters.

Will you use family names for future kids?
Maybe. No need to decide just yet!

on the phone with my OB:
"I'm ready. Let's just get this show on the road."
"Ok. I'll schedule an induction at 6am Monday. See you at the hospital!"

The worst part of the end of pregnancy, at least for me, was wondering when. By week 39 I wasn't terribly uncomfortable, or too huge. I just wanted to know when I was going to finally meet our baby. It was killing me. Each day I'd wonder to myself if that day was the day. The excitement, the anticipation, finally knowing if we were having a boy or girl...but WHEN?! The pregnancy pendulum swung from exciting to tedious.

I spent the majority of my pregnancy accepting the fact that my baby would most likely be born via a scheduled c-section. With a very low laying placenta, concerns for an abruption, hemorrhaging, or other complications, I was carefully monitored. At 36 weeks it was decided that the placenta's location was fine, so a scheduled C was deemed unnecessary. Then baby showed some signs of distress at our week 38 NST. An induction was discussed. Inductions often lead to a c-section, especially if baby is already struggling during contractions. The major consolation in all this was, at very least, I got to know when. I mentally prepared myself for surgery. Ultimately, I didn't care. I wanted a healthy baby by whatever means were the best and safest. My birth plan was simply to have a baby.

Then, when my doctor threw me a curve ball and suggested I could pass my due date, which previously hadn't been an option, I felt completely overwhelmed. I thought I was guaranteed a baby by October 26. At the end of a pregnancy, days turn into years. They drag and drag and you can't imagine waiting. any. longer.

Did I need to be induced at 39 weeks and 3 days? Not exactly. Did I want to? Heck yes. "Let's just get this show on the road".

And, so, we set our alarm clocks for 4:45am on Monday, October 22 knowing that the day had come. We were going to meet our baby.

I really want to get back in the groove of blogging. I miss it. I miss you. And I have lots to say.

1. I MUST share baby Fix-It's birth story. I read birth stories like a fiend when I was pregnant. It only feels right to pay it back to the blogging world. Plus, what kind of person documents every moment of their pregnancy and then just disappears into baby land? Not this girl.

2. I've started to keep a running log of blog post ideas. I know a lot of people do this. Why? Because they're smart. I have no less than 10 ideas for posts daily...and then I forget. And then there's radio silence. Doh. But now I have a list.

3. Speaking of logging my ideas, one of them is entitled "chocolate". Ok, self. Where were you going with that one?

1. Red TOMS: Mr. Fix-It totally called me out on the fact that I had a girl-crush on my OB/GYN. Which was true. And when she wore some super cute red TOMS at one of my appointments, I decided I needed a pair too.

2. Sephora Collection Moisture Cream: On a recent Sephora trip, I plopped down in a chair and let a trendy sales girl shop for me. When I requested some "good" moisturizer this is what she brought me. Seeing as I never ever have moisturized my face I'm not comparing this to much (well, anything). But so far, so good! It's thick and creamy and when I put it on at night I feel like I'm doing something good for my skin. And at $30 it's a steal!

3. GlamourMom Nursing Tanks: Confession: I haven't worn a bra since my son was born. I have literally worn a nursing tank every. single. day. Since my tanks are getting some serious use, I'm glad to have quality ones. They're pricey ($49), but worth every penny. They are LONG and supportive and have slots for boobie pads. I LOVE THEM. And I own five.

4. Erin Condren Jumbo Calendar: There's something about using a pen and paper for certain things. (I love my Erin Condren Life Planner!) I'm adding this calendar to the mix so that Mr. Fix-It and I have a visual of upcoming dates and events. All of a sudden our spring and summer are looking very busy! Now to find the perfect spot to hang this thing...

5. Kate Spade "Stud Earrings": Necklaces and babies don't mix particularly well. So, I've decided fun earrings are a great way to dress up my outfits. I alllllways get compliments when I wear these!

6. Sharpie Pens: My favorite pens EVARRRR.

What are you currently loving?
Oh, unspoken expectations.

So since I'm home with our little boy (I'm sloooowly returning to work), there's been this shift that's occurred in my marriage. Prior to the birth of our son we both worked full-time jobs. Now, Mr. Fix-It works a traditional schedule and I'm transitioning toward part-time-odd-hours-but-primarily-a-SAHM. And for the record, staying home and raising children is MORE than a full-time job. For real. I mean, sure, my "boss" took a 4 hour nap yesterday. But I also haven't slept on my own schedule since...August? Literally at any given moment I'm on call.

I digress...

So, when we both worked outside the home "equally" meal planning (or lack thereof) and housework were joint efforts - 50/50. Now that I'm home, groceries, cleaning, laundry, etc are all mine. I'm not complaining, per se, just observing. It's an unspoken expectation I've placed on myself. (And the hubs doesn't seem too upset.)

The real point of this post is about meal planning, though. I don't care about dinner. Weird? Maybe. By the end of the day, I would be happy to eat a bowl of cereal, some strawberries, and a few bites of cottage cheese. In fact, that's what I ate most nights when I was doing the single girl studio apartment scene. (I was also at my thinnest then. Just saying.) I really have little interest in cooking a whole meal that disappears in 10 minutes. And then clean up. Ugh.

Mr. Fix-It, on the other hand, is pretty rigid about his meals. I think the idea of skipping a meal gives him the shakes. Cereal for dinner? You may as well offer him cardboard. So, pre-baby, on the average night, at about 6:30 we would both blankly look at each other and wonder what to make for dinner. Mr. Fix-It would be annoyed that I didn't care, and I'd be annoyed that "fend for ourselves" wasn't considered a desirable option. It was a frequent source of tension.

Lately I've started doing this crazy thing. I meal plan. On Sunday I decide what we're eating for dinner each night. I make a list of ingredients we need. We grocery shop. I either get dinner started in the late afternoon, or Mr. Fix-It and I cook together once baby-man is asleep.

So, dare I say it? It's actually enjoyable. I no longer feel like a domestic failure and Mr. Fix-It is thrilled that we eat like a normal couple/family. Score one for marital bliss.
Good old American Dreams, right? Get married, have kids, own a home. So far, we've managed to do all of those things. Being a homeowner (read: condo) is different than being a HOUSEowner, though.

Since baby Fix-It came along, I can't stop daydreaming about a house. Multiple rooms to decorate! Space! Stairs! Guest room! Grass!

I don't think my desire for a house is completely tied to moving from a couple to a family. But perhaps there's a subconscious hard-wiring that I've succumbed to. Either way, that's my current dream. Nothing sounds more heavenly.

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

THREE

I think washi tape is one of the most adorable things around. But, despite the 5 rolls stacked all cute on my desk, I'm at a loss over how to use it. I've used it to decorate an envelope and a present or two but I don't think I'm reaching my full washi use potential.

Here are two of my favorite ideas:

for decorating charger cables

{source}

{source}

Who doesn't fear failure? I mean, really. No one sets out on something huge and says, "well, whatever". Or if they do, I can't relate.

So, I've been working on this thing - my life, specifically - since I packed my bags for Northwestern in 2000. It was there, during my undergrad degree completion, that I realized what I wanted most for myself: a family and a career I love. And I also came to understand that to the be the wife and mother I desired, I would need a career that offered me flexibility.

For all of my (albeit brief) adult life, I've been working at those two things: a family and a career. And it happened perfectly. I met a boy, shared in the most beautiful wedding, and made a wonderful little baby. Meanwhile, I got a Master's Degree, worked as a therapist, and earned licensure. For everything I've done there have been steps, timing, and a plan. There has always been another hurdle on the horizon. Finish my hours, so I can take the exam. Wait for the call that you're actually pregnant. You know, stuff like that. "Someday we'll have a baby and I'll have my own therapy practice". Then that baby became a reality, as did leaving my non-flexible job.

I have officially turned in my two weeks notice. It's really happening. All of it. Everything I have worked toward, the final step in the process, is now. I've never been so excited and simultaneously terrified.

I'm not into New Year's Resolutions. I'm pretty bad at making long lists of goals and accomplishing them throughout the year. The reality is, giving this blog a design refresh and new direction is purely serendipitous timing with the New Year. But it was time.

When I first started blogging, it was a place of heart. I reconnected with one of my passions - writing - and made some amazing friends along the way. Now, I've fallen into a rut. I loved documenting my pregnancy. Sharing home improvement stories has been fun. It's wonderful to have a place to recap events. At some point, though, I lost track of my story.

A willingness to share a story ideally elicits conversation. Opinions come too. Judgement. Support. Loved ones become vulnerable. "Please don't share this on your blog..." "You wouldn't post this, right?". For some time now, I've been feeling censored.

I'd be lying if I said I knew where this post was going. Or where this blog was going, really. It's going somewhere. I know it.

Somehow, Baby Fix-It is already 6 weeks old! What?! I know! Those first weeks are harder and more wonderful than I had anticipated. So, here is a roundup of things that made those hard moments more wonderful. We've gotten a lot of use out of many baby products, but these 8 have proven to be the most essential.

1. Quinn Swivel Glider: We purchased our glider through a local Chicago boutique, Beautiful Beginnings. The best advice I have is to not cheap-out on a glider! Your bum will thank you. I have spent countless hours feeding and rocking Baby Fix-It in it. I've also "closed my eyes" and woken up 2+ hours later in this chair. It has gotten use every single day, and I'd buy it again without a doubt!

2. Cooshee Changer: The cooshee has become a craze in the past year. They're sold out everywhere, and I was only able to score one by ordering directly through the manufacturer. I'm so glad I did! My child has pooped, peed, and spit up on the changer repeatedly. Being able to wipe everything down versus dealing with additional laundry (at 3am, no less) is awesome. Every couple of days I give the changer a good scrub down to ensure it's nice and clean. Also, Baby Fix-It LOVES it! One minute he'll be all fussy, and as soon as we lay him down he's happy. We call it his "happy place".

3. iPhone: This one is for me. As much as I love feeding my baby and gazing into his eyes, sometimes I need to keep myself entertained. I have no idea what women did before smartphones - meditate perhaps? - but seriously, I get a lot of reading done on this thing and random hours of the day and night. Plus, I feel like I haven't lost all connection with the outside world.

4. Boppy Pillow: I wasn't a huge fan of the boppy in my nannying days. I found it awkward and uncomfortable. I'm not sure why this was the case, because now it has literally saved my back. I looooooove the boppy. Perhaps my previous discomfort was because I was bottle-feeding then versus breastfeeding now. (Maybe someone can weigh in on this?) Anytime I have to feed the little guy without the boppy I'm a little sad.

5. Snugabunny Swing: I don't love the idea of having to undo anything when it comes to parenting. But this swing has been a lifesaver. We owe 4, 5, and 6+ hour sleep stretches to this glorious creation. For now, Baby Fix-It does his first stretch of sleep in the swing, and then we move him to the crib after his first night feeding. So far it's working well, and I remind myself that I won't be sending him off to college in a swing. (Cue visual of me and Mr. Fix-It installing a hammock in a dorm room for our son). One tip: if you're buying a swing make sure it has a plug! Battery operated ones are just plain stupid.

6. Uppababy Vista: We love our uppababy! Baby Fix-It currently fits wonderfully in the bassinet. He's snoozed through many walks and meals in it. It's also perfect when we're out and about on the road - click in the carseat and we're good to go. The stroller handles beautifully and I think it's extremely well made. Plus, I have a personal hatred of umbrella strollers, so I'd like the Uppababy to be our one and only stroller. In fact, I already have the rumble seat for when we're talking baby 2!

7. iBaby Feed App: This was recommended to me through a friend of a friend. If you're breastfeeding, download this app. It's SUCH a great way to keep track of feedings!

8. Miracle Blanket: The miracle blanket is king. I love our A&A muslin blankets, and the flannel swaddle designs ones are great, but when it comes to keeping a little, wiggly, houdini baby tightly swaddled all night, you NEED one of these. Make sure to read the instructions, too! We initially weren't even using the arm flaps correctly. I've found the miracle blanket so essential that we ordered an extra in the event of a mid-night spit-up/poopsplosion. It's that good.

And since I love a good product list, I'll make sure to compile some of our favorite products moving forward, too! For the first 6 weeks, though, these are our absolute must-haves! Do you have any newborn products you swear by?

I haven't done a Currently Loving post in FOREVER! This probably has a lot to do with the fact that the past year hasn't had much to do with shopping for myself (save for some maternity clothes). With Christmas on the way, I decided it was a good time to put together a list of a few things I've been coveting. Here's hoping Santa reads my blog!

1. Frye Paige Tall Riding Boots: I spotted these in grey a few months back, and fell in love. I've wanted a pair of Frye's for a while now, and these are perfect. I'm ultimately thinking the black will be the most practical. How do I not own any black boots?! Also, they're a bit pricey but I've heard that Frye's last forever and are really top notch.

2. Sephora Gift Card: Mama needs some new makeup. For serious. Oh wait, I no longer have time to sufficiently put on makeup. Any chance there's some new, magical stuff that just appears on your face?

3. Kate Spade Earrings: Guaranteed to jazz up a casual outfit, no? Plus, not too expensive!

4. MARC BY MARC JACOBS 'Preppy Nylon - Natasha' Crossbody Bag: Seems like a great option for when I don't want to carry a full diaper bag. I have some great shoulder bags, but with the little guy having something crossbody seems to make a lot of sense.

5. Michele Signature Deco Two-Tone Diamond, Diamond Dial: Admittedly, this one is a stretch (at over 2k!). Really, I'd just like a two-tone watch. But, hey, may as well dream big!

What do you want this year?

Week 40 was certainly the most exciting one yet! Baby boy was born at 39 weeks and 3 days gestation. The days before his arrival were spent soaking in as much rest and relaxation as possible. Of course, if I really knew what sleep deprivation meant I probably would have found a way to hibernate those last few days!

Just after my 39 week OB appointment, a plan had been made with to induce on Monday, October 22. (Everything looked great, but not passing my due date had been part of the plan from day 1 based on the nature of the pregnancy). Mentally, having a "finish line" in sight was amazing. I held out some hope of going into labor on my own, but also felt as if a huge weight had been lifted in not having to wonder about the "ifs" and "whens".

By Saturday evening my Dad and sister had arrived in Chicago (my Mom had come the week before), and we spent Sunday making the most of our last day before baby. At the recommendation of friends, we went to the movies, went out for dinner, and wandered the city a bit. I felt calm and happy despite the looming unknowns. As the day wound down, Mr. Fix-It and I headed back to our condo and parted ways with my family. We made plans to meet up at the hospital the next day, and we were going to try to get a good night's sleep and enjoy some time together. Mr. Fix-It and I spent most of the evening in disbelief that we were really going to meet this baby. Finally!

Somehow I did manage to sleep that night, despite having some nerves creep in about the induction process (and the general prospect of labor and delivery). It was all starting to feel surreal. We climbed into bed early, and set our alarms were set for 4:45am the next morning...

(Mr. Fix-It and I are still deciding on the details of what we'll share on the blog as related to our little one. I'm working on coming up with a blog-nickname for him, so please don't use his name in the comments. We don't want our kid google-able just yet!)
One week ago, just around this time*, I became a Mom.

That moment. That moment of meeting this little, beautiful, sweet person - it will forever turn me into a sentimental mess. Those 9 months of guessing if he was a boy or girl, wondering what he would look like, just trying to imagine who this sweet child was all came together in the most powerful moment I have ever experienced. The only word I can use is "perfect". The moment I met my son was simply perfect.

The birth of our little boy has changed me in ways I have only just begun to understand.

My heart has grown in a way I didn't even know was possible. But I do know that there is a now a place that belongs only to this baby boy. And it will be his forever.

* I attempted to write this post last night - when he was officially one week old - but instead I opted to sit with Mr. Fix-It, holding our baby, and soaking it all in. And crying my eyes out.

It's official - we will be meeting this little one SOON! Any final guesses? All of a sudden I'm convinced this baby is a boy. It will certainly be a surprise! Things may be quiet around here for a couple of days, but we're looking forward to sharing some exciting baby news. Thanks for all of your love and support!

My first week of maternity leave wound up being much more exciting than I bargained for! On Monday, I enjoyed myself - lounging around, preparing a few things for baby, but generally laying low. Tuesday morning I had my weekly non-stress test and OB appointment. That's when things got interesting.

During the non-stress test I had two contractions. I noticed some activity on the monitor, but baby kept on moving and its heartbeat was chugging away. I didn't think much of it, but when the nurse came to read the test she took her time looking it over and then left the room. I sat around waiting for a while and was then informed I needed to follow up with a BPP (bio-physical profile). Luckily, Mr. Fix-It had just arrived to meet me for the OB appointment, so I called him to come join me in the antenatal resource center. We had a second ultrasound of the day, and baby cooperated immediately - the tech was able to see what she was looking for (movement, "breathing activity", etc). Everything was just fine. However, during the original non-stress test baby's heart rate was dipping with contractions so they were worried s/he may be in some distress.

We headed downstairs to my OB and she let me know she had just received the results of my test and wanted me to follow up with an extended non-stress test to ensure that everything was truly ok. If the heart rate continued to dip, we would have a conversation about inducing that day, or even a c-section if necessary. Mr. Fix-It and I both simultaneously got goofy grins on our faces and glazed over.

We went down to OB Triage and got hooked up to the fetal monitors. Mr. Fix-It called my Mom to keep her posted, and she was on a flight within an hour. If baby was coming today, she wasn't missing the big event! Baby passed the second test with flying colors, and we were sent home soon after lunch time. It made for quite the eventful morning!

The rest of the week was spent running errands, relaxing, and hanging out with the Grandma-to-be. Everyone is getting REALLY excited about this little one's arrival - on to week 40!

Week 38 (October 12 specifically) was a BIG milestone that I've been looking forward to for, well, since August. Week 38 meant the start of maternity leave! I spent the final two weeks of work semi-frantically wrapping up paperwork: client notes, transfer summaries, discharge papers, assessment reports, treatment reviews...the list goes on. Each night I'd review all the tasks I had to complete the next day, feel overwhelmed and anxious, and beg baby to stay put until at least October 13. Thankfully, little one cooperated.

Finishing work also meant no longer having to commute. I'd replayed a few scenarios in my mind of making my way back to the city while in labor. I wasn't entirely worried that I'd be in the situation, but really, you never know. I've had times where it's taken me just about two hours to get home. So I figured it's always best to have a plan. (And don't even get me started on the challenges in bladder holding during that drive). I'm done - amen!

People have started asking if I was feeling that things were "getting close". Physically, I've felt mostly the same. Baby's head is still low, I have occasional cramping, but I don't have any sort of sixth sense that this baby is showing up at any second. I think we're hanging tight for a bit longer. Mentally, though, YES. And no. I have these moments of thinking about how different things are *just* about to be, and then I also realize I'm in some bizarre state of denial. I swear I walk around totally forgetting that there is an actual baby on the way. Seriously, some nights I'll lay in bed and think to myself, "there's not really a baby in there". And then I wake up and have a quick moment of panic and think, "ohmigod, is the baby still there?!", and I check my belly and confirm that I am still, in fact, most likely quite pregnant. I was joking to colleagues that I may need to self-refer for a psych eval.

The reality is, though, getting to this phase of pregnancy just seems so unbelievable. Spending months and months imagining this tiny human in your life as a distant, unreachable thing suddenly shifting to a real, actual thing that IS HAPPENING is just more that I can comprehend. I don't think it will all entirely come together until I actually see this little one and hold him/her in my arms. We are SO CLOSE!

This kid cracks me up. Seriously. This week we started our now-weekly non-stress tests. (It's a simple 30 minute test where two monitors are attached to Mom's belly and baby's heart rate, movements, and contractions are monitored.)

(You sit in a chair and look something like this)

So, the funny part is that our baby LOVES to kick and push whenever pressure is placed on my belly. For the entire test our kid had a field day pushing and fighting the monitors. The nurse asked me TWICE to sit still because the belts kept shifting. I had to laugh and blame the baby. Sorry, kid! You're FEISTY!

In other news, my observation of the week is that my food tolerance has shifted. I'm noticing that complex foods sound completely unappealing. As in, the more ingredients in a dish, the less I am interested. An apple? Great. Yogurt with granola? Yum. A savory dish with all sorts of herbs and marinade? I couldn't even take two bites. I vaguely remember reading a reason why this can occur, especially as your body prepares for labor. Of course I'm forgetting now, but I can tell you that if you offered me a bowl of chili I might dry heave a little.

As for this baby's arrival? Your guess is as good as mine. I've been feeling crampy here and there, which supposedly means my body is revving up a little. Now that this munchkin is full term, I'm starting to get antsy. I fully realize, however, that we're not at the finish line just yet and this little one will arrive whenever it is good and ready!
