Chateau 1771 celebrates 25 years

In celebration of its 25th year anniversary, Chateau 1771 is offering two special treats from May 18 to 31, featuring well-loved and one-of-a kind dishes by the group’s Executive Chef, Vicky Rose Pacheco.

True to the spirit of festivity, Chateau 1771 offers two stand-out dishes that have stood the test of time with a glass of wine for P990 net, available during dinner only. The first course is the restaurant's renowned Raclette, a luxurious melted Swiss cheese with marbled potatoes, pickled onions and gherkins-- a certified favorite for over two decades. The piece de resistance is the restaurant’s head-turner, Potence (pictured above). Juicy and flavorful steak hangs from a metal gallows is presented to the diner flambéed with skill and flair. The beef is seasoned, robust and tender, dressed in its natural juices then whisked with some brandy.

The second menu is a tribute to Chef Vicky’s academic roots: a degustation menu highlighting Chateau’s signature dishes, especially prepared for Hotel and Restaurant Management students and 2013 HRIM graduates. Mad for Garlic - A taste of endless garlic posibilities

The newest hip fine dining place in the metro has opened, and it's not making any of the vampires happy haha! Mad for Garlic in Bonifacio Global city gives us garlic, garlic and more garlic.

If you're a fan of garlic, then you definitely have to savour and taste Mad for Garlic, cause this is definitely made for you. But just as much, Mad for Garlic offers great tasting food for the whole family to share and enjoy.

From the good people who brought California Pizza Kitchen, IHOP, P.F. Chang's to the Philippines, comes another great food concept sure to keep you coming back for more. Mad for Garlic traces its roots from South Korea (surprised? So was I), and is making tongues turn as they have blossomed to more than 20 stores. Now that they have finally broken ground in Manila, you can just be sure they will popping up in your neighbourhood soon.

First you'll notice are the side lamps which are actually shaped and presented to you as a giant garlic, whist having real garlic attached on the base of the lamp, which is quite ingenious and very creative indeed. Show your love for the garlic, just think of how many kilos of garlic they prepare everyday.

I admit I am a garlic person, even now I can't seem to shake myself for the fact that I do buy from those hawkers on the street selling nuts, and in the process ask for a lot of those fried to a toast garlic bits, to be included in my bag of nuts. Haha I'm guilty. But they are really good.

But here in Mad for Garlic, they took it up a notch and made sure your love for garlic would go further up the food chain, and be your choice for casual Italian cuisine.

For appetizers, they have come up with indeed a creative name for this, Drakula Killer (P195), made from soft garlic buttered toast bread, served with garlic cooked in olive oil and anchovies. A refreshing appetizer worth coming back for, I still remember my younger days when we bought french bread and toasted them with butter and garlic bits, but of course these tasted so much better.

For the adventurous side in you, order the Tutto Mushroom Salad (P665), a combination of three kinds of mushroom served in teriyaki sauce with grilled red pepper, asparagus and argula. Fantastic, exotic and definitely a must-try!

Beware the Garlic Snowing Pizza (P545), aside from the traditional pizza dough this one of a kind pizza knocks us out with over the top servings of fried crisp sliced garlic, topped with shrimp, pineapple to sweeten the deal and a special sauce, you would be craving for more. I honestly thought I just wanted one slice, but when I took a bite, it was the surprise of my life. It took my breath away literally, with fried toasted garlic flavor. If you had to kill dracula, this is it!

The Gorgonzola Pizza (P475), one of tastiest cheese pizzas I ever had. Topped with gorgonzola cheese and served on the side with honey. Spreading honey on pizza was a first for me, and this won't definitely be the last.

The Dancing Salsa Rice with steak (P295), not just your ordinary hot plate serving, an exhilarating dish of dance, tap and more. This dish is served hot while the server is dancing, nah I was just joking, but the dish will be served to you with a lot of action to be done by the server, you just got to order it to find out.

Zuppa di Pesce (P655), is a special spicy soup with various kinds of seafood served with garlic bread sticks. It was indeed on the spicy side, but I liked it nonetheless, the shell pastas was the perfect pasta mix for the dish, as it cups in juices of the soup, making them even more desirable.

Crab and Lobster Pasta (P475), is a garlic and cream sauce pasta with crab and lobster meat, simple as it may seem, the scent of crab and lobster, 2 of the best seafoods there is coupled with the ooze of their rich juices, makes this a hard to top off pasta dish.

To cool us down, try the Wine_Ade (P170), an interesting and unique concoction of red wine and soda. Cold and sweating, this tasty mix of flavors will summon the inner you and definitely be on your new favorite drink list.

Time for some dessert, and of course since we are in Mad for Garlic, the dessert is never spared. Have a taste of Garlic Spinkle Gelato (P175), Mad for Garlic special garlic ice cream with garlic cookie. You'll never look at gelato the same way again.

Sweet, Spiced and everything Garlic, that's what Mad for Garlic is all about. Loving breakfast at Cafe 1771

Wake up to a renewed old habit, breakfast. This is a term I rarely use, admittedly I'm one of those poor souls with the habit of skipping the most important meal of the day, breakfast. But now with what I have discovered with Cafe 1771, I guess you'll be seeing more of me on breakfast chit chats, now I'm truly excited.

A table set with Bread Basket (P250), which has Zucchini bread, banana bread, foccacia and scones will set the mood to a heavier breakfast treat.

Cafe 1771, is conveniently located in El Pueblo and is part of the Chatteau 1771 group, which is also the bright minds that brought us Sentro 1771, Winebar 1771, Sidebar and more. As you can see they have been very busy these past few year, now you know why.

So here we have their breakfast menu specials and indeed a bite of these treats is never enough.

Have a bite of their Whole Wheat Corned Beef Pandesal (P200), full of the beefy goodness that you look for in corned beef, finishing up a bun is ok but when you're going for the next one, I guarantee you would be full, until merienda.

Cooked with much care, as the pandesal absorbs much of the juice from the corned beef, it makes your breakfast order even more enticing. The rich taste of beef, best complements the soft pandesal buns, making it one of the unbeatable breakfast sulit deals you can ever get.

Cafe 1771 Eggs Benedict

With a choice of ham (P350) or smoked Salmon (P420), using whole wheat bread, poached organic eggs and hollandaise sauce, as much as it looks so good to taste, sad to say, and as you know, I'm just not a fan of eggs. But as I have gotten smiles from my friends who enjoyed every bite, then I could say they were quite good.

Sour Cream Pancakes with caramelized bananas and candied walnuts (P350)

Pancakes is breakfast, well as most Americans would think so, even Filipinos are loving it day after day, other than donuts, I would think this is the most consumed breakfast choice, well next to cereal that is. Sweet, creamy, buttery, as you slice through it's soft chewy center, blend it up with caramelized bananas and sweet walnuts, wasn't able to taste even a hint of sour cream, but overall I was more than pleased

Hey wait, this is the Philippines, and what would be the staple meal? Of course rice! Here we have the Spanish Chorizo (P380) rice meal, it's a bit on the salty side, but what do you expect it's chorizo. It's great with rice as it balances out the saltiness and gives you a full-filing meat.

Other choice of rice meals is their Adobo flakes fried rice (P250), other than being so deliciously inviting, the adobo flakes had a burnt taste and crispy texture that made the dish, probably one of the best Cafe 1771 has to offer.

Try their famous Melted Kesong Puti (P200), dashed with guava jam, with whole wheat bread toasted to a crisp, then topped with goat cheese. You really have to try this out, the melted cheese just runs through your tongue and you can taste the sweet, salted taste of the keso. A must-order!

Weekends are best spent with families, I would think most of us would agree on this. With our very busy working schedules, we only see our family early in the morning before we go to work or late at night when the kids are ready to sleep, that is indeed the harsh reality of our lives at the moment.

Such are my moments with Dad, like right now when I'm missing him again. I remember that it was only during weekends that we were to get together for a lunch or dinner with whole family. Now that my mom is my only parent still around, I make sure to make time for her, especially on weekends.
Of course, when we have our dinner outs, we would always think of our "pamangkins", nephews and nieces as to what they wanted to eat, as we are indeed a large family. And as dinner is quite fast for kids nowadays, you'd expect them to go running around and playing, that can be headache for us, but Eastwood Cafe took the extra mile and gave the best solution, their family weekend buffet feast!

Italiano Perfecto y Cantina Sicilianita at Rex Bookstore

I say what? Rex Bookstore? Yes, you read that right. It might come as a surprise to you guys that there is indeed an Italian place inside Rex Bookstore, "Cantina Sicilinanita" is what its called and they serve great tasting pasta creations and more.

At first I thought it was a joke that my friends were pulling on me, telling me "Hey let's have lunch at Rex Bookstore", I said what? Are we having books to eat for lunch, if that is the case you can go ahead and I'll just skip lunch, haha as if that's happening.

So my curious feet still followed and there right in front of me "REX Bookstore".

So it's confirmed we won't be having books for lunch, thank God! Haha. But what a surprise to see that inside Rex Bookstore is indeed a cozy Italian pasta place. Cantina Sicilianita was conceived about a year ago, and has been gaining followers since then.

What conspired after was a waving of spoons and forks, and a stomach so full, I'm surprised it didn't even put a dent on my wallet.

For appetizers, my friend Fel, recommended for us Arancini (P145), which is Italian rice with meat sauce, at first look I thought I was looking at potato balls, but when I took one up and sliced it up in the middle, tells you a totally different story.

Saffron Risotto balls stuffed with pancetta ragu, fried to to a crisp golden brown. The saffron risotto was just amazing, with every bite so soft, you could feel it melt as soon as it lavishes on your tongue, it was an exciting mixed feeling of good ol' Italian cooking, and a taste to be loved by Filipinos.

We then ordered some pastas to fill up our hungry tummies, we ordered for the Gamberetti Fra Diavolo (Spicy Shrimp Linguine) (P175), a hefty serving fit for a Godfather! Made with fresh spicy shrimps with a secret Godfather's recipe, tossed in linguine pasta with a hint of red wine, sprinkled with parmesan cheese. Spiced just right, you can taste the tomato goodness with a scent of spice to liven the serving and keep you up on your toes.

Another colleague of mine, Jess, took to the sea and ordered Vongole Con Pomodorini (Clams with Cherry Tomato) (P150), a traditional Neapolitan dish with cherry tomatoes, white wine, garlic, clams and parley sauteed in olive oil. Full of flavor, every bite bursts out the freshness of the sea, perfect for the seafood lover in you.

Last but not the least, my order of Bolognese di Mario (P150), a creation from the Italian city of Bologna and perfected in Marky's kichen (who's Marky? I think he is the owner), is thick and full-bodied meat sauce made of red wine, fresh basil, and stewed tomatoes topped with a meatball.

I just love everything about my pasta, from the firm pasta noodles, spiced with loads of Parmesan cheese, and a serving of "Heavenly meatball". I think I tasted heaven with that slice of meatball, the aroma and flavor that it oozes out as I devour it bit by bit, I tried to cut it in small slices, hoping my meatball serving replenishes somehow, but we have to accept the inevitable, I was bound to finish it all up anyway haha.

I also ordered as side dish Potato Wedgie (P35.00), they are indeed your tasty potato slices, but apart from being the potato that they are, is that these babies are not the frozen ones you keep in your fridge and serve when you want them. These are fresh cut, native potatoes, and I just loved how it tasted, with sprinkles of Parmesan cheese to all more variety.

So what do I think about Cantina Sicilianita? The word is priceless! Never in my wildest imagination that pasta dishes that were this good would come at a price so affordable, I can eat for 5 days straight here and I'll still have change for P1,000.

They also serves Panini, salads, Dolci and some specials such as Chicken Marsala (P230) and Crusted fish with lemon dill cream (P200), I will be back for you two.

Come visit Cantina Sicilianita at Rex Bookstore right at Shaw Blvd. in Mandaluyong City. The are open from Mondays to Saturdays from 9 am to 9 pm. It's a shame though that they don't open on Sundays. I'm quite sure they will have a full house, with limited seats I suggest you come early. Also please be reminded that they handle cash transactions only.

Also on their Japanese spread, you have different lobster choices such as Japanese Lobster fried rice which I highly recommend and more.

To complete your seafood escapade, treat yourself to cheese baked oysters, oh my, these are so good! If not for the cholesterol effect, I could finished a bucket in no time.

I love Ramen Bar!

Ramen goodness in a bowl at Ramen Bar!

So many ramen places popping up in the metro, you just can't figure where to go right? But of course, we take note of where to find worthy and great tasting authentic ramen places without leaving a big dent on your wallet, and Ramen Bar is definitely on that list.

A ramen place here, a ramen place there, wow they're like mushrooms all over and more are opening as days go by, but we at The Food Alphabet loves Ramen Bar, not just because it serves up real good ramen, but it's also a nice place to unwind with friends and family.

Ramen bar also has delightful appetizer treats that is unique to them other than serving the usual Gyoza, they do add a little twist in what we are usually are familiar with and here are some of their creations.

Cheese Gyoza (P180), Cheese infused pork gyoza fried to a crisp, not your ordinary pan fried gyoza, but these are crisp and good, talk about the melted cheese and also try their Chicken Karaage (P155), where you dip in a salt-pepper grind mix, just like the ones you have when eating pigeons at Chinese restaurants.

Spicy Kakuni Buns (P220) with wasabi

Kakuni Buns (P, sliced pork asado in buns with lettuce, a mix of mayo and hoisin sauce, makes indeed a perfect bite for the hot ramen soup coming up. These small plates surely don't disappoint, have some or better have more!

Now on the what Ramen Bar is all about, their piping hot tasteful ramen.

Shoyu 2.0 Ramen (P280), an upgraded version of the original Shoyu Ramen. Just like software which upgraded to the new version, Shoyu 2.0 is indeed that upgrade that we need, with tasty chasyu, topped with tamago, naruto and negi with salt infused Tonkotsu Ramen. I just love how this soup broth tastes! Rich tasting, as the leeks just brings out the flavor with every sip of hot soup.

Kakuni King Ramen (P380), if you love kakuni then this will be definitely be on top of your palette, with generous servings of meaty kakuni topped with tamago over soy infused Tonkotsu ramen, it's a must for every meat lover out there.

It delights me to say that even though Ramen Bar is purely born here in the Philippines, it does not lose out to Japanese-based ramen places that opened in the metro. Their noodles are so firm and tasty to the bite, every strand seems to pack with flavor and you'd know it was made with love for ramen.

Take a bite into their ramen, and know why Ramen Bar is the choice of many ramen aficionados in the metro.

Want some spice, then venture into Bikkuri Ramen (P380) territory, miso based broth with chili and minced pork, with chasyu and a bit of attitude. Yeah this baby will bring out the steam in you, have a sip and you'll be back for more.

Chops Chicago Steakhouse at Greenbelt 5

Taking a munch out of Chops Chicago Steakhouse

It's not everyday you get the chance to have a fine steak,
luckily today is just that day.

The feast starts off with a mighty piece of hot ciabatta bread, with a spread of hot, oozing butter mixed with spices, and I were a bread person then this definitely satisfies my every craving.

Every slice of the bread, with a healthy serving of the spread, just culminates in flavor, and when it reaches your taste buds, screams out delicious in every way, what a way to start the feast indeed.

Today we will be having an 8 oz. piece of tenderloin pure USDA Angus steak with parmesan fries on the side, served on a wood platter uniquely Chops. Don't be fooled by how little this was, it was at least 1 and a half inches thick, and that got me all excited.

Got my steak knife and started slicing piece by piece, and with the perfect cook of medium well (Thanks Chef!), the meat just had retained it's juicy texture while giving you that crisp burnt crust that made my steak oh so appealing.

Just as I enjoyed my steak, a mix of fresh mushroom gravy was all too delightful to bring in more flavor to the already awesome steak that I was having. A juicy steak you say? Come get one yourself at Chops Chicago Steakhouse.

Feast on a little red meat, and pair with your favorite glass of red wine, makes every night a date night once again.
