Final NFL Mock Draft

2015-04-30T10:24:00.004-05:00

1. Tampa Bay Jameis Winston (QB, Florida State)

Famous Jameis is the most pro-style ready QB in this draft. He’s bright, he’s big, and he’s accurate. Does he possess the work ethic (it appears so) and character (still sketchy) to be the face of a franchise? The Bucs take a gamble and say yes.

2. Tennessee Marcus Mariota (QB, Oregon)

Many have the Titans taking defensive lineman supreme in Leonard Williams. All that athletic ability at 6-5, 300-plus pound is definitely intriguing. But the Titans are running a pure 3-4 defense and already have a jumbo athlete on the d-line in Jurell Casey. Maybe the Titans trade the pick but Mariota is the guy that appears to be going number 2. And if the Titans keep it, Mettenberger isn’t the answer so Mariota could be their choice.

3. Jacksonville Dante Fowler, Jr. (EDGE, Florida)

Fowler is a stocky-built, powerful defender. He has plenty of speed off the edge to play the “Leo” position in Gus Bradley’s hybrid 4-3 defense. He's still somewhat raw as a pass rusher as he relies on pure speed, power and motor to get in the backfield. If he is to be a team's feature pass rusher, he will need improve his technique. Also, one of his greatest strengths, his aggressiveness, is sometimes a weakness. He is undisciplined in both the run and pass game because he is in such a haste to overwhelem his opponent. Have to respect that, but don't have to love it. He's still one of the most talented players in this draft and the Jags should feel strongly about the possibility of Fowler at number 3.

4. Oakland Leonard Williams (DT, USC)

Most people have the Raiders going receiver. Williams, a Raiders fan growing up, would be a perfect fit in Oakland. The Raiders targeted several defensive tackles in free agency but couldn’t land a starting-caliber player to play 3-tech. Williams would be replacing veteran Antonio Smith who was atrocious in run defense last season. GM Regge McKenzie will hope to land a receiver in round 2. If not, expect the Silver n’ Black to go edge defender.

5. Washington Vic Beasley (EDGE, Clemson)

Beasley has been gaining steam as much or more than anyone since draft season began. There were thoughts of him being undersized, but he showed up at both the combine and Clemson's pro day at well of the 240 pounds teams were hoping he'd be. He also blew up the combine. As a stand-up linebacker, Beasley's weight is even less of an issue. Beasley's further advanced from a technique standpoint than all the other edge rushers in this draft. Expect immediate contribution.

6. NY Jets Amari Cooper (WR, Alabama)

The Jets acquired Brandon Marshal in a trade to go along with Decker. Whoever is under center has received a boost in the passing game. Despite all that, I believe New York is going to go value and take the best player available, which happens to be a receiver. Cooper has seen double teams, man, zone and has done it for three years as THE receiver at Alabama. He shattered multiple single season and career records last year at Alabama while having more attention on him than any receiver to ever play at Bama. Also, he made it look easy with a quarterback who was a running back at one point in his career. While New York might not "need" Cooper right now, he'll definitely be productive early.

7. Chicago Kevin White (WR, West Virginia)

The Bears attacked free agency by adding safety Antrel Rolle and edge defender Pernell McPhee to bolster the front of their new 3-4 defense. With the trade of Brandon Marshall, Chicago could address the receiving corps. White is one of the best players available so it’s also a value pick. His speed and size will be too hard to pass up here.

8. Atlanta Bud Dupree (EDGE, Kentucky)

Bud Dupree also turned heads at the combine. His size screams defensive end while his athletic ability suggests he'd be right at home as an outside linebacker. The Falcons have hired Dan Quinn, a Pete Carroll disciple, to run their team and defense. The "Leo" position may suit Dupree quite well. Quinn could make Dupree his personal project as his background is as a d-line coach.

9. NY Giants Danny Shelton (DT, Washington)

The Giants had so many problems last year. Stopping the run was of them but it’s been a problem for the last few seasons. Shelton will help with this but his unique athleticism will allow the Giants to avoid giving up interior pass rush as the big man is agile as well.

10. St. Louis DeVante Parker (WR, Louisville)

The Rams could go offensive line here but with last year’s first round pick Greg Robinson still looking to land at a permanent position the Rams address another concern. Parker is the last of the top tier receivers in this draft and St. Louis lands a true number one wideout by taking him. Not that Jeff Fisher ever really wants one.

11. Minnesota La’el Collins (OL, LSU)

La’el Collins is similar to last year’s first offensive lineman taken, Greg Robinson. He could be an excellent fit for most teams at left tackle but his power and frame could make him an All-Pro guard if he moves inside. Minnesota could use help at both spots and Collins has the most upside of any offensive lineman in the draft so it’s a solid if unsexy fit.

12. Cleveland Malcom Brown (DT, Texas)

Brown is a big-bodied athlete much like Danny Shelton. He can play the 1-tech, 3-tech or be a 5-tech in 3-4 defenses. Brown is worthy of a top ten pick but falls due to needs for other teams. Cleveland could go wide receiver if Parker falls here.

13. New Orleans Brandon Scherff (OL, Iowa)

Scherff is similar to La'el Collins in that he's an offensive tackle who could play guard. The difference is that Scherff might project to guard significantly better. The Saints could use help on the line, whether that's now or later. Scherff could fit a number of spots so it's a quality selection.

14. Miami Trae Waynes (CB, Michigan State)

Waynes vaulted himself to the top of most draft boards after the combine. He's tall, aggressive and intelligent. Once he flashed his athletically ability, he ensured his status as a first round pick. The Dolphins were busy in free agency. They grabbed the most prized player available, Ndamukong Suh. But they also were able to shed bad the contracts receiver Mike Wallace, linebacker Dannell Ellerbe and others. After a seemingly successful start to the offseason, the Dolphins still have few holes. One of those holes is cornerback which is where the aforementioned Trae Waynes fits in. He can take advantage of a bolstered defensive line by using his length to smother receivers.

15. San Francisco Marcus Peters (CB, Washington)

The 49ers are set to lose a couple cornerbacks via free agency. Replacing (upgrading) those would be ideal anyway. Peters is the most talented corner in the draft. He’s raw and could come with baggage as he was kicked of Washington mid-season.

16. Houston Landon Collins (SS, Alabama)

Collins is a playmaker. I could see a team trading up to land the only real difference making pure safety in this draft. He’s a ball hawk and headhunter although his deep coverage skills leave much to be desired. Studying under Nick Saban for three years may earn him the ‘Bama bump’ as well.

17. San Diego Todd Gurley (RB, Georgia)

Reports are coming in suggesting that Gurley's knee could allow him to play in week one. The Chargers are in need of a feature back and might pounce on Gurley's potential. I, personally, am not a fan of taking running backs this high, but this is a nice fit for the Bolts.

18. Kansas City Ereck Flowers (OT, Miami)

Flowers is a physically aggressive player. He plays with a mean streak. A bit raw, but he has the makings of a future left tackle although he might play right tackle for the Chiefs.

19. Cleveland (f/Buf) Breshaud Perriman (WR, Central Florida)

Perriman ran a blistering sub-4.3 40-yard dash at his pro day. At 6-3, 215 pounds, he's quite intriguing. The Browns, desperate for a receiver, could jump at the chance to land this potential.

20. Philadelphia Randy Gregory (EDGE, Nebraska) (CB, LSU)

It seemed like a forgone conclusion that the Eagles are taking a cornerback if they aren’t able to move up for Chip Kelly’s guy Marcus Mariota. After signing Byron Maxwell and Walter Thurmond, it's no longer necessary. The Eagles look to make a splash pick with their biggest need, safety, being a bit of a reach at 20. Gregory, considered by many as a potential top 5 pick, falling to Philly is value. Obviously it comes with risk or he wouldn't still be on the board. Kelly has shown that he's a risk taker in almost every facet of football.

21. Cincinnati Shane Ray (DE, Missouri)

Ray was recently caught with marijuana. That along with a questionable foot injury has seen his draft stock take a hit lately. Ray is still likely to go in round one, and the Bengals could use added pass rushing depth.

22. Pittsburgh Kevin Johnson (CB, Wake Forest)

The Steelers secondary is falling apart before our eyes. They could look for help at tackle, interior defensive line or even edge rusher but there are glaring needs in the secondary that will have to be addressed. Kevin Johnson is a long, athletic cornerback who fits the Steelers mold.

23. Detroit Cameron Erving (C, Florida State)

The Lions need help along the offensive and defensive lines. In the first round they Erving, who is a versatile option, to replace long time center Dominic Raiola. It's not flashy but it's safe. Detroit will address defensive tackle and defensive back in later rounds. This pick also allows them to move Erving around if a center they covet is still on the board late in the draft.

24. Arizona Arik Armstead (DL, Oregon)

Armstead is a bit of an enigma. He's a tower of a man that sort of looks more like an offensive tackle than a defensive end. He flashes in spurts but his athletic ability suggests that he should be doing more. The Cardinals run a hybrid defense that could take advantage of Armstead's ability to play inside an out. As of now, he looks to be two-gap 3-4 defensive end, but he could possibly grow into a force in the passing game.

25. Carolina Phillip Dorsett (WR, Miami)

Dorsett has seen his stock rise after running blazing times at the combine. He's both quick and fast, and looks to be a dynamic slot player. Carolina could pair is speed with Kelvin Benjamin's size to give Cam Newton a unique receiving combo. As much as the Panthers run the ball, Dorsett better get used to doing some blocking.

26. Baltimore Melvin Gordon (RB, Georgia)

Justin Forsett was brought back on a team friendly deal but that doesn't keep them from selecting a back to pair with him. Melvin Gordon is a likely first rounder and Baltimore could choose to have a shared backfield. The home run-hitting Gordon would complement the steady Forsett.

27. Dallas Owamagbe Odighizuwa (DE, UCLA)

The UCLA defensive end is probably a better fit in a 4-3 defense. He's somewhat of a project but his raw talent gives him immense upside. The Cowboys need edge rushers, especially since they want be seeing Greg Hardy until the eleventh game of the season.

28. Denver Andrus Peat (OT, Stanford)

The Broncos put a premium on offensive line. And with Gary Kubiak as head coach, that’s likely even more so now. Andrus Peat has the ability to take over for Ryan Clady when and if the Broncos decide his salary is too much.

29. Indianapolis Cedric Ogbuehi (OT, Texas A&M)

Ogbuehi has dropped due to a knee injury and a lackluster senior season. He looked more comfortable on the right side of the offensive line. He's also spent some time at guard which could intrigue the Colts who seems to value versatility along the offensive line.

30. Green Bay Eric Kendricks (ILB, UCLA)

The Packers had one of their best players in Clay Matthews playing inside linebacker last year because of depth issues. Kendricks could change that. He's a complete, every down 'backer that Green Bay could deploy immediately. Kendricks is also coming from a 3-4 defense already which is what the Packers currently run.

31. New Orleans (f/ Sea) Dorial Green-Beckham (WR, Missouri)

The Saints traded Jimmy Graham to the Seahawks picking up a Pro Bowl center and this draft pick in the process. New Orleans addresses another besides its vacancy at tight end at the end of the first round. The Saints take a flyer on oft-troubled yet supremely gifted receiver Dorial Green-Beckham. DGB has the more talent that any receiver in a draft that is full of receivers. Don't be scared, Saints.

32. New England Byron Jones (CB, UConn)

The Patriots take Mr. Long Jump. Byron Jones is explosive. He's 6-1 and solidly built. After declining the options of Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner, New England isn't exactly deep at cornerback. And seeing what two cornerbacks could do for a defense has to make Belichick consider taking a cornerback early in this draft.

USA Today Sports

**Each list will be continually updated as players are signed and released throughout the offseason.**

1. Tashaun Gipson, Cleveland, 25 (RFA - second round tender)

Gipson is unhappy with the tender but has little leverage in terms of getting a long term deal. He'll be a Brown in 2015, but this messy situation may not leave him Cleveland for any longer than that.

2. Bernard Pollard, Tennessee, 30

Pollard ended 2014 on IR and started his offseason by asking for a release from the Titans. Obviously, it was granted. Tennessee has since moved on by snagging Da'Norris Searcy as his replacement. Pollard, at 30, is going to be considered an old man by NFL standards now, but he still provides strong play as a box safety. The suspicion is that he gets signed.

3. Jeromy Miles, Baltimore, 28

Ummm... The market is bare...

4. Usama Young, Oakland, 30

5. Dawan Landry, NY Jets, 32

6. Sherrod Martin, Jacksonville, 30

2015 NFL Free Agent Rankings: Cornerbacks

2015-04-29T11:44:00.000-05:00

**Each list will be continually updated as players are signed and released throughout the offseason.**

1. Tarell Brown, Oakland, 30

Brown has been a Bay Area guy. He played for the Niners before signing with Oakland last offseason. His play was decent, but was perhaps hampered by injuries. He ended the season on the injured reserve.

2. Aaron Ross, Baltimore, 32

The 6-1 defensive back is no spring chicken. He could still be capable of contributing to an NFL team in the right scheme.

3. Javier Arenas, Atlanta, 27

Arenas not is a capable slot corner that doubles as a punt returner. He's exceptionally smart and relies on anticipation and quickness in both spots.

4. Josh Thomas, Detroit, 26

Thomas is a spirited player that might reconnect with Detroit after the team's options are exhausted.

5. Jarrett Bush, 31, Green Bay

6. Mike Harris, NY Giants, 26

7. Carlos Rogers, Oakland, 34

8. Cassius Vaughn, Detroit, 27

The FiNN NFL Mock Draft

2015-03-12T11:30:00.000-05:00

1. Tampa Bay Jameis Winston (QB, Florida State)

Famous Jameis is the most pro-style ready QB in this draft. He’s bright, he’s big, and he’s accurate. Does he have the work ethic and character to be the face of a franchise? The Bucs take a gamble and say yes.

2. Tennessee Marcus Mariota (QB, Oregon)

Many have the Titans taking defensive lineman supreme in Leonard Williams. All that athletic ability at 6-5, 300-plus pound is definitely intriguing. But the Titans are running a pure 3-4 defense and already have a jumbo athlete on the d-line in Jurell Casey. Maybe the Titans trade the pick but Mariota is the guy that should go number 2. And if the Titans keep it, Mettenberger isn’t the answer so Mariota could be their choice.

3. Jacksonville Dante Fowler, Jr. (EDGE, Florida)

My first change in the latest update (thanks to free agency) is at number 3. Williams was the pick but Jacksonville added Jared Odrick (at $7 million per year) to go along with Senderrick Marks. What Jacksonville needs is someone off the edge. Fowler is a stocky built, powerful defender. He has plenty of speed off the edge to play the “Leo” position in Gus Bradley’s hybrid 4-3 defense.

GM Regge McKenzie will hope to land a receiver in round 2. If not, expect the Silver n’ Black to go edge defender.

5. Washington Randy Gregory (EDGE, Nebraska)

Here’s another toss-up. There are two real choices (if Fowler’s off the board) for an edge rusher here. Randy Gregory and Vic Beasley blew up the combine. I think Gregory is the Redskins’ choice because of his upside. He may be too lean initially for full-time deployment, but playing wide on third downs until he gains weight is still a spot where he will benefit a team immediately.

6. NY Jets Amari Cooper (WR, Alabama)

Whoever the Jets have under center will need more than Eric Decker to have success. Enter Amari. Cooper has seen double teams, man, zone and has done it for three years as THE receiver at Alabama. He shattered multiple single season and career records last year at Alabama while having more attention on him than any receiver to ever play at Bama. Also, he made it look easy with a quarerback who was a running back at one point in his career.

7. Chicago Kevin White (WR, West Virginia)

8. Atlanta Vic Beasley (DE/LB, Clemson)

Beasley put people on notice last week. He’s more than an undersized defensive end. He’s physical, explosive and athletic. Atlanta needs youth injected along its defensive front and will go with the best pass rusher available.

9. NY Giants Danny Shelton (DT, Washington)

10. St. Louis DeVante Parker (WR, Louisville)

11. Minnesota La’el Collins (OL, LSU)

12. Cleveland Malcom Brown (DT, Texas)

13. New Orleans Shane Ray (DE/LB, Missouri)

Shane Ray is another lean edge rusher. New Orleans has only Junior Galette to provide help in that area. They weren’t very good at getting to the QB last year so this is the first play they’ll to address in the draft. Ray being available here will put a smile on the face of Saints brass.

14. Miami Trae Waynes (CB, Michigan State)

15. San Francisco Marcus Peters (CB, Washington)

16. Houston Landon Collins (SS, Alabama)

17. San Diego Brandon Scherff (OG, Iowa)

Scherff is a solid tackle that could possibly project to guard in the NFL. The Chargers, like the Vikings, need help in multiple spots along the o-line. Scherff would fit in at guard because the Chargers have King Dunlap and DJ Fluker manning the tackle spots.

18. Kansas City Ereck Flowers (OT, Miami)

Flowers is a physically aggressive player. He plays with a mean streak. A bit raw, but he has the makings of a future left tackle although he might play right tackle for the Chiefs.

19. Cleveland (f/Buf) Dorial Green-Beckham (WR, Missouri)

DGB going to Cleveland should give Browns fans pause after Justin Gilbert and Johnny Manziel have gone the way they each early in their careers. However, a receiver-needy team would be hard pressed to pass up this Calvin Johnson clone. However cheap the imitation is.

20. Philadelphia Jalen Collins (CB, LSU)

It seemed like a forgone conclusion that the Eagles are taking a cornerback if they aren’t able to move up for Chip Kelly’s guy Marcus Mariota. After signing Byron Maxwell and Walter Thurmond, it's no longer necessary. However, Collins is a long cornerback who can play outside in nickel situations. He can even be moved to safety Eagles' brass see fit down the road.

21. Cincinnati Eddie Goldman (DT, Florida State)

Goldman is a man-child. He plays with Herculean strength. He does fall short in the conditioning department however. The Bengals need someone to help wreak havoc in the interior. Goldman can be that guy.

22. Pittsburgh Bud Dupree (EDGE, Kentucky)

Dupree impressed at the combine. A fringe day one pick has catapulted into the top half of the first. Miami, like most teams, could use help getting to the quarterback. Dupree’s hybrid skills will give him a chance to get one the field. This pick could change if the staff in Miami feels good about the progress of Dion Jordan.

23. Detroit TJ Clemmings (OT, Pittsburgh )

The Lions need help along the offensive and defensive lines. In the first round they take Clemmings to play right tackle. It's not flashy but it's safe. Detroit will address defensive tackle and defensive back in later rounds.

24. Arizona Shaq Thompson (SS, Washington)

Thompson was definitely a “loser” at the combine. His film didn’t coincide with what he presented at the Scouting combine. Another question about Thompson is whether or not he’s a safety or linebacker. This is why I think he’s a fit in Arizona. Even with Todd Bowles gone, Arizona has pieces that are movable. Patrick Peterson plays cornerback inside and out, Tyrann Mathieu plays nickel corner and is also a free safety and veteran Rashad Johnson plays lots of deep safety. The Cardinals could use Thompson’s hybrid skills as a strong safety and coverage linebacker in different sub-packages. At 24, he’s a steal.

25. Carolina Devin Funchess (WR, Michigan)

The Panthers found Cam Newton a sizable target last draft but why stop there? Funchess fits as hybrid tight end/receiver. The Panthers’ college-style approach is right up Funchess’ alley.

26. Baltimore Melvin Gordon (RB, Georgia)

The Ravens surely won’t overpay for Forsett. And even if he’s brought back, it takes two in this league. Gordon would complement the steady Forsett.

27. Dallas Owamagbe Odighizuwa (DE, UCLA)

The UCLA defensive end is probably a better fit in a 4-3 defense. He's somewhat of a project but his raw talent gives him immense upside. Dallas will gladly take him if he falls to 27.

28. Denver Andrus Peat (OT, Stanford)

29. Indianapolis Arik Armstead (DE, Oregon)

Armstead is a mountain that moves. He’s built for the 3-4 defense. Alongside a healthy Josh Chapman, his play will improve the overall consistency of the Colts’ D.

30. Green Bay Cameron Erving (OL, Florida State)

The Packers have aging players along the offensive line. Their best offensive lineman Bryan Bulaga is a free agent. If Bulaga signs elsewhere, it increases the likelihood that an offensive lineman is chosen here. Other options include defensive back and linebacker.

31. New Orleans (f/ Sea) Bernardrick McKinney (LB, Mississippi State)

The Saints traded Jimmy Graham to the Seahawks picking up a Pro Bowl center and this draft pick in the process. New Orleans addresses another besides its vacancy at tight end at the end of the first round. Another huge hole is at inside linebacker. McKinney is a large linebacker who can play sideline-to-sideline, rush the quarterback and is also smart enough to quarterback the defense.

32. New England Todd Gurley (RB, Georgia)

The Patriots take Todd Gurley knowing he might take a redshirt. Gurley is a physical runner that can create long runs from pure speed in the open field. With Blount back in New England, he will buy time for Gurley to get healthy.

2015 NFL Free Agent Rankings: Linebackers

2015-03-06T11:39:00.000-06:00

**Each list will be continually updated as players are signed and released throughout the offseason.**

1. Rolando McClain, Dallas, 26

A resurgent McClain finished second in Comeback Player of the Year voting behind New England tight end Rob Gronkowski. His play in the middle of Dallas’ defense was just what the Cowboys needed after losing Sean Lee for the season. Like Bruce Carter, Dallas may be too tied up with other players to make a huge run at McClain. Unlike Carter, McClain probably won’t need much to re-sign after an inexplicable double retirement and injuries that saw him miss three games last season have likely lowered his value.

2. Lance Briggs, Chicago, 34

Briggs is probably coming back as he doesn’t seem ready to retire. Whether or not that season is in Chicago is hard to tell. Chicago could be moving to a 3-4 defense after hiring Vic Fangio who previously coached the 49ers. He has enough size to play inside linebacker in that style of defense but may not want to commit to such a new system.

3. Brandon Spikes, Buffalo, 27

A pure inside linebacker and quality blitzer, Spikes has seen success in both 4-3 and 3-4 defenses. Probably a two-down player wherever he goes, he can certainly boost some team’s run defense. After being jettisoned by the Patriots and now being a Bills free agent, maybe Spikes tries his hand for another AFC East squad. The Dolphins and Jets may be interested.

4. Casey Matthews, Philadelphia, 26

The ‘little’ Matthews isn’t quite as known but he certainly flashes in moments. He displays a high football IQ by diagnosing play quickly and displays quick twitch agility by darting towards ball carriers to make plays. A bit undersized, Casey Matthews won’t command much attention but does provide value, as he is comfortable in a variety of positions and a stalwart on special teams.

5. Mason Foster, Tampa Bay, 26

6. DJ Williams, Chicago, 33

The eleven-year veteran has spent time as both an inside and outside linebacker. Recently, he’s played inside linebacker, which includes last season for the Bears. Williams is still an athletic player. The move to a 3-4 defense in Chicago could negatively impact a desire to return.

7. Andrew Jackson, Indianapolis, 23

8. Phillip Wheeler, Miami, 30

9. Nate Irving, Denver, 27

10. Dane Fletcher, New England, 28

2015 Free Agent Rankings: Edge rushers

2015-03-06T11:32:00.000-06:00

**Each list will be continually updated as players are signed and released throughout the offseason.**

1. Mathias Kiwanuka, NY Giants, 32

Kiwanuka was recently released by the Giants as so New York could clear some cap space. However, there's plenty left in the tank of this veteran pass rusher. Early in his career he played behind Justin Tuck, Osi Umenyiora and Michael Strahan. His time was limited so much that the Giants actually used him as a strong side linebacker some. His natural fit is as a 4-3 defensive end thanks to his long frame. He's a nice fit as a rotational edge rusher wherever rushers are needed.

2. Sam Acho, Arizona, 26

3. Dwight Freeney, San Diego, 35

Frenzy can still be effective off the edge. I suspect he gives it one more year before hanging the cleats up.

4. Anthony Spencer, Dallas, 31

5. Osi Umenyiora, Atlanta, 33

6. Jermaine Cunnigham, New England, 27

7. Corey Wootton, Minnestoa, 28

**Each list will be continually updated as players are signed and released throughout the offseason.**

1. Damon Harrison, NY Jets, 26 (RFA)

"Big Snack" holds down the middle of the Jets defense. New coach Todd Bowles will definitely want to keep him around. His restricted tag will likely make that a little easier.

2. Henry Melton, Dallas, 28

3. BJ Raji, Green Bay, 29

Raji isn’t a pure 3-4 nose tackle but that’s where his value lies. Green Bay could keep him around after Raji had a subpar season for his standards. The franchise tag doesn’t appear to be in play.

4. Ahtyba Rubin, Cleveland, 29

The massive nose tackle could be on the move. Because Phil Taylor (the younger of the two and under contract) is also a nose tackle, Rubin could walk. However, keeping two starting quality big men in the middle to spell one another is play the Browns will entertain.

5. CJ Mosley, Detroit, 31

Mosley will likely be paying close attention to Ndamukong Suh and Nick Fairley. Mosley’s former teammates could be deciding his future based on Detroit’s ability to re-sign its starting defensive tackle. Mosley will be a short term fix for another team if he parts ways from the Lions.

6. Kevin Williams, Seattle, 34

7. Devon Still, Cincinnati, 26

2015 NFL Free Agent Rankings: Guards and centers

Getty Images

**Each list will be continually updated as players are signed and released throughout the offseason.**

1. Stefen Wisniewski, Oakland, 26

Wisniewski is a scrappy center who had an up and down season. He’s spent time at both center and right guard during his career. He might be better at guard but is adamant about playing center. He’s an above average lineman who will get the chance to continue playing the position he’s chosen.

2. Brian De La Puente, Chicago, 30

De la Puente is a seven-year reserve lineman. He played well this season in backup duty but had his season cut short due to an ankle injury.

3. Mike Johnson, Atlanta, 28

4. Davin Joseph, St. Louis, 31

Davin Joseph has been stellar since entering the league. He’s slowed his mauling nature down just a bit in recent years but is still a force when healthy.

5. AQ Shipley, Indianapolis, 29

6. Mike Pollak, Cincinnati, 30

7. Gabe Carimi (G/T), Atlanta, 27

Carimi is a marvelous talent. He hasn’t panned out at offensive tackle so he’s also spent time experimenting at guard. The light bulb can still come on for the college All-American but his next stop could be his last.

8. Justin Blalock, Atlanta, 31

9. Samson Satele, Miami, 30

Satele has played for Miami on two separate occasions with Oakland and Indianapolis sandwiched between tenures. He’s been a mostly consistent center who can be overmatched by bigger defensive tackles.

10. Dominic Raiola, Detroit, 36

11. Will Rackley, Baltimore, 25

12. Adam Snyder, NY Giants, 33

13. Jah Reid, Baltimore, 27

2015 NFL Free Agent Rankings: Offensive tackles

2015-03-06T11:27:00.000-06:00

**Each list will be continually updated as players are signed and released throughout the offseason.**

1. Jake Long, St. Louis, 30

Long hasn't been healthy recently. He's torn his ACL the last two seasons. His days of playing left tackle could be over but his talent is still better than most. A bit of a risky addition to any team, Long should find a home fairly quickly thanks to his potential.

2. Joseph Barksdale, St. Louis, 26

Barksdale has flourished in St. Louis after being cut by Oakland who originally drafted him. Not much on zone blocking, Barksdale has proved to be quite the combo tackle. Re-signing him could be relatively cheap but expect other teams to show interest.

3. Willie Smith, San Diego, 28

A four-year veteran, Smith played for San Diego in a reserve role last season. His most extensive action as a starter came in 2012 when he started seven games for the Oakland Raiders. Smith is another swing tackle who can give teams roster flexibility.

4. Byron Bell, Carolina, 26

Bell is not the most consistent pass protector but can demolish defenders in the run game. Athletically, he fits the mold of a left tackle but may be better suited for the right side as he struggles against premier pass rushers. He’s now an experienced tackle after starting 17 of the last 18 games.

5. Tyler Polumbus, Washington, 30

Polumbus is a right tackle by trait. After struggling last season, Polumbus was replaced by Tom Compton. It’s still possible he gets looked at as a starter but the most likely scenario for Polumbus is that he battles in training camp on a team not named the Redskins.

6. Ryan Harris, Kansas City, 30

After only starting five total games for the Texans in 2013 and 2014, Harris started all but one game for the Chiefs last season. He's a lean, quick tackle suited well in zone blocking schemes. Harris is an average starter who is ideally just a stop-gap player or competition for a younger player.

7. Corey Hilliard, Detroit, 30

8. Gabe Carimi, Atlanta, 27

9. Ben Ijalana, NY Jets, 26

10. Chris Hairston, Buffalo, 27

2015 NFL Free Agent Rankings: Tight ends

2015-03-06T11:26:00.000-06:00

**Each list will be continually updated as players are signed and released throughout the offseason.**

1. Jermaine Gresham, Cincinnati, 27

After the Bengals took Tyler Eifert in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft, the writing was on the wall for Gresham. A first round pick his own right, Gresham won’t be short of suitors. His production has dropped slightly over the last couple seasons, but he’s still easily a starting caliber tight end in the NFL. He's being heavily linked to the Raiders.

2. Zach Miller , Seattle, 29

Miller had limited success in Seattle after being the leading receiver for the Raiders his first four years in the league. Miller's regression is largely due to his concussions. If Miller doesn't retire or suffer more concussions, he can provide excellent depth for another team. He's one of the best blocking tight ends in the NFL.

3. James Casey, Philadelphia, 30

Casey is an excellent reserve tight end. He doubles as a fullback and also contributes nicely on special teams. He has a number of connections to other teams via teammates, coordinators and head coaches so his value isn't going to go unnoticed. He'll find a team.

4. Bear Pascoe, Atlanta, 28

His name is Bear. He should be signed off his name alone. There’s also the 6-5, 265-pound frame that screams pro tight end. Pascoe has been a reserve and special teamer while in Atlanta. He started eleven games for the New York Giants in both the 2010 and ’11 seasons.

5. Tony Moeaki, Seattle, 28

6. David Ausberry, Oakland, 27

7. Chase Coffman, Tennessee, 28

**Each list will be continually updated as players are signed and released throughout the offseason.**

1. Michael Crabtree, San Francisco, 27

Crabtree hasn't lived up to the billing as an early first round pick but is still a viable option. His injuries and diva attitude are the reasons he's still available. With all the quality young receivers off the board, expect Crabtree's market to heat up this week.

2. Reggie Wayne, Indianapolis, 36

Yes, he getting towards the end. However, unless he decides he’s finished, he has more left. Wayne is still a quality route runner and can be a safety net for quarterbacks underneath coverages. Wayne would probably like to wrap his career up in the only place he’s ever played but now that's not going to be possible. With the Colts signing Duron Carter and Andre Johnson, they've made it clear that they've moved on.

3. Rod Streater, Oakland, 27 (RFA - second round tender)

Streater isn’t a popular player just yet. As an undrafted player from Temple, he became a starter his rookie season in 2012. After starting all of 2013, he only played in three games before injuring his foot last season. With his small sample size and restricted label, expect Streater to stay a Raider.

4. Hakeem Nicks, Indianapolis, 27

Nicks played his first and likely his last season for the Colts in 2014. With the emergence of T.Y. Hilton and Dontre Moncrief as well as the newly CFL star Duron Carter, Nicks might need a new home in 2015. The good news is he’s still in possession of those monstrous hands that allow him to vacuum any football in catch radius. His work ethic is what’s been questioned since he pulled in 11 touchdowns in 2010.

5. Wes Welker, Denver, 34

The shifty Welker seems to find himself open wherever he goes. So far only concussions have slowed him down. He’s had enough to scare some teams off but if he’s willing to continue his career, surely there are teams out there who will utilize his talents.

6. Dwayne Bowe, Kansas City, 30

Bowe has been a problem for the Chiefs since he was drafted. His production has been up and down, but lately it's spent a lot of time on the down side. His huge frame and red zone production will keep him in the NFL, but if his attitude doesn't change, it won't be for long.

7. Denarius Moore, Oakland, 26

8. Brandon Lloyd, San Francisco, 34

9. Jermaine Kearse, Seattle, 25 *RFA (second round tender)

Pearse is one of the mediocre receivers that Russell Wilson has been given. He's a decent player but nothing special. He likely signs the second round tender the Seahawks gave him and remains in Seattle for 2015.

10. Miles Austin, Cleveland, 30

11. Robert Meachem, New Orleans, 30

12. Donnie Avery, Kansas City, 31

13. Santana Moss, Washington, 35

14. Brad Smith, Philadelphia, 31

2015 Free Agent Rankings: Running backs

2015-03-06T11:00:00.001-06:00

**Each list will be continually updated as players are signed and released throughout the
offseason.**

1. Jacquizz Rodgers, Atlanta, 24

Rodgers has been a third down back but is capable of more. While being a feature back is probably out the question, at 24, Rodgers could share the load for a number of teams. The Falcons will want to keep him of course.

2. Daniel Thomas, Miami, 27

Thomas had a strong rookie year but never quite got a solid grip on the starting job. He's a big, powerful runner with speed. He lacks the goal line vision to complement his frame in the red zone, and he's not shifty either. Thomas is still a viable backup and is probably a bargain this offseason.

3. Stevan Ridley, New England, 27

Here’s a quality back with one huge setback. He isn’t the best at ball security. Ridley is especially dangerous in goal line situations because of his vision and compact frame. He’ll be a lukewarm commodity for teams looking for depth.

4. Pierre Thomas, New Orleans, 30

Thomas has been a mainstay in New Orleans. Other than injuries, he's been a productive back. He's been used in the red zone, between the tackles and was deadly when deployed in the Saints screen game. At 30, teams will wonder how much is left in the tank.

5. Chris Polk, Philadlelphia (RFA), 25

6. Knowshon Moreno, Miami, 27

Moreno has never lived up to the hype. He only has one 1,000 yard season (2013 with the Broncos) in his career. Last year, like so many Moreno's injuries cut out a chunk of his season. He only played in three games carrying the ball 31 times for 148 yards.

7. Ben Tate, Pittsburgh, 27

8. John Kuhn (FB), Green Bay, 32

Kuhn has found niche in Green Bay's offense as a red zone weapon. He can carry in short yardage situations, catch out of the backfield and even being a blocking back in pass protection. The Packers could look to bring him back on a one-year deal at the minimum unless he gets interest in other places.

9. Jonathan Dwyer, Arizona, 26

2015 NFL Free Agent Rankings: Quarterbacks

2015-03-06T11:00:00.000-06:00

**Each list will be continually updated as players are signed and released throughout the offseason.**

Robert Sabo/New York Daily News

1. Jason Campbell, Cincinnati, 33

Campbell has become the ultimate backup quarterback. He’s big, smart and reliable. He’s consistent which is what teams are looking most in a backup. Last year he backed up Andy Dalton in Cincinnati but the Bengals may have ideas for AJ McCarron to be Dalton’s primary backup next season. That could have Campbell on the move once again. Surely he finds another job.

2. Mike Vick, NY Jets, 35

Vick may have seen more ups and downs in his career than any quarterback in the history of the NFL. He's been arrested, suspended and benched. He's been in MVP races, won playoff games and broken records. But at 35 years old, Vick can pretty much end his dreams as a starter in this league. He does, however, provide support and playmaking ability in a backup role if he chooses to do so.

3. Tarvaris Jackson, Seattle, 32

T-Jax seems to like being a backup. Get paid, do nothing, repeat. If he's not backing up Russell Wilson next year, look for him to find another young stud to support.

4. Matt Flynn, Green Bay, 30

Flynn's career as a starter is all over. He can be a capable backup QB for spot duty. He's a west coast fit so any team looking to sign him will run a system similar.

5. Ryan Lindley, Arizona, 26

Lindley filled in for the slew of injured quarterbacks in Arizona last season. His play was, at times, atrocious. However, he was handicapped from the start. A third string quarterback isn't supposed to be in that situation. He gained valuable experience and he could still be a viable backup option down the road.

6. Austin Davis, St. Louis, 26

Davis was a decent quarterback for a guy who wasn’t supposed to start a majority of games. St. Louis won with him at quarterback. While he likely wasn’t a reason for the limited success the Rams had, he at least showed teams that he could steer the ship if pressed into duty. That’s enough to get teams to call the 26-year old.

7. Tyler Thigpen, Cleveland, 31

10. Luke McCown, New Orleans, 34

Eagles Fly McCoy to Bills for LB Alonso

2015-03-03T19:41:00.001-06:00

Photo: UPI

Chip Kelly's Eagles have added another Oregon Duck to the roster. This time, it was done in an interesting, rare fashion. The rare player for player NFL trade went down Tuesday evening. The Eagles sent running back Lesean McCoy and his ginormous contract to the Bills for young linebacker Kiko Alonso.

Honestly, this is a head scratcher for me. Buffalo, who had (technically has) the option to keep pending free agent CJ Spiller, chose to
go another route. That route being the uber-talented but insanely pricey McCoy. There's no doubt that McCoy is an upgrade to Spiller but paying McCoy's salary ($11.95 million) is a bad proposition.

Also the guy traded from Buffalo needs to be taken into account. Former Oregon Duck and now former Buffalo Bill Kiko Alonso is one of the best up and coming linebackers. He has future Pro Bowler written all over him if he's healthy.

The young stud will earn less than 800K for his work next season. This trade allows Philly to clear almost $8 million of cap space. There's no doubt in mind who won this transaction. The ~~Oregon~~ ~~Ducks~~ Philadelphia Eagles obviously plan to be extremely aggressive in free agency now having over $40 million in cap room.

NFL, it's time to change the Franchise Tag

2015-03-03T12:08:00.005-06:00

Monday marked the day when players found out whether or not they were heading to free agency. Six total players were placed with some type of tag. Five players were recipients of the franchise tag while just one (tight end Charles Clay) was introduced to the less popular transition tag.

Two of the players who were tagged were edge rushers. The New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul and the Kansas City Chiefs outside linebacker Justin Houston were given one-year deals thanks to the hand-capping nature of the franchise tag. While both players primary job is to disrupt the opposing team's passing game by getting pressure of the quarterback, Pierre-Paul is slated to earn almost $2 million more than Houston by virtue of playing in a 4-3 defense.

The amount for franchising a defensive end is $14.813 million while the amount for a linebacker is $13.195 million. To be clear, there's a strong chance that Justin Houston fights the idea that he's tagged as a linebacker instead of defensive end. At the very least, he'll attempt to use his pass rushing status as leverage to get a long term deal.

Both players spend a majority of time lined up just outside the offensive tackle. Trying to pay Houston less because he stands up as opposed to lining down in a three-point stance. When the franchise tag was created in 1993, the 4-3 was still the primary defense. More so, linebacker was seen as the more glamorous position and was paid as such. Now passing is all the rage in the NFL. Defensive ends aren't primarily run stoppers. They are drafted and signed to be quarterback assassins. Also, the evolution of passing offensives has created multiple sets and more receivers on the field at a time. This means defenses are searching for versatile players. The 3-4 defense lends itself perfectly to the versatility; especially with players like Justin Houston. His athleticism gives him the ability play in space more than most pass rushers. But that shouldn't cost him money.

It's becoming increasingly difficult to classify players by positions. The NFL should change the titles to accommodate the changes in the league. Titles such as "interior defensive lineman" should be used for a player who plays inside in base and nickel packages. "Edge defender (or rusher)" should be used to categorize players like Justin Houston, Jason Pierre-Paul and Cliff Avril (who plays the "Leo" position in Seattle's unique defensive scheme). When Julius Peppers, who played in a 4-3 scheme in both Carolina and Chicago, signed with Green Bay, his role didn't change much at all. He was comfortable, even when playing from a two-point stance, because he was still on the edge. However, when teammate Clay Matthews was moved to inside linebacker, it created waves. Matthews had a more severe position change than Peppers although Matthews has been a linebacker his entire career.

Joining rush linebacker, defensive tackle (whether 4-3 or 3-4), and defensive end as one position group for the purpose of the franchise tag would be a possibility as well. More players would likely hit free agency but it's no different from having only an "offensive lineman" tag as opposed to the subgroups of tackle, guard and center. These changes must be made or it will become an almost annual discussion for star pass rushers wanting to be labeled as defensive ends.

And yes, put tight ends in the same category as receivers to avoid Jimmy Graham-type catastrophes. If a tight end is considered talented enough to tag in this era, trust me, he's spending plenty of time split out in a wide receiver-like manner.

The league is surely aware that the conflict isn't going away anytime soon. Attempting to pull one over on players isn't going to work in this case. They're proactively fighting the league's stance on this. The NFL should operate in the interest of fairness. "Franchise" tags should be for franchise players. Those players should be expensive. The league's franchise tagging process is simply working with an outdated model.

The NFL looking to increase roster size to 55?

2015-03-02T17:36:00.002-06:00

DAVID EULITT THE KANSAS CITY STAR

The idea of adding to the current 53-man roster has been tossed around plenty in the last few years. Still, it likely hasn't been approached enough. The NFL's Competition Committee has apparently put "examination of roster size" on its docket for its annual meeting. If current players (and player representatives) and league officials weren't so busy trying to get the best deal for themselves, this issue would've been a stronger player during the lockout.

Bottom line: football is a violent sport. I'll advocate for the importance of football being in the life of both kids and adults until the day I die but I admit it can absolutely be taxing on a man's body. In the NFL, where players can weigh in excess of 300 pounds and move that weight as well as anyone in almost any other profession, it's dangerous. What's worst than the high impact collisions that are repeatedly shown by countless sports shows and websites is the strain put on an athlete by the day-to-day small acts. Blocking, tackling and even sprinting provide stress on a body that can only take so much.

Basically, adding a couple more players for game day could go along way in saving players from lasting injuries. Players running down on kickoffs absorb lots of punishment (which is why the NFL has moved the kickoffs up, increasing touchbacks while considering narrowing goalposts). With sub packages and multiple formations being so popular in the NFL, virtual starters are having to play on special teams. If players can be afforded six to ten plays off a week, along with reduced physical reps in practice settings, bodies wouldn't be as stressed.

As for the money, it wouldn't change much. Adding 64 players to the pool would take away a million dollars from each team. Split between the 50-plus already on the roster, it means a loss on average of about twenty-thousand per player. And with the cap increasing by twenty-million dollars over the last two seasons, the amount is negligible. It's likely increasing again before the 2016 season when a change would take effect. Owners should have no gripe if the cap increases because of the addition of players. A company that makes $4.5 billion annually should be able to squeeze in an extra 30 mil, right?

If the NFL is serious about player safety, adding a couple players to each roster would be a way to show it. There aren't many changes to be made that keeps football the sport it is and increase player safety, but this is a surefire way to do it.

Official cap numbers are in

2015-03-02T16:58:00.004-06:00

The league year has started and official numbers for the cap are out as well as the numbers for the
franchise and transition tags.

The 2015 cap is up $10 million from last year (which was up $10 million from 2013). The number is $148.28 million. That number certainly bodes well for the players.

Franchise Tag Numbers are as follows:

QB: $18.544 million

RB: $10.951 million

WR: $12.823 million

TE: $8.347 million

OL: $12.943 million

DT: $11.193 million

DE: $14.813 million

LB: $13.195 million

Five players franchise tagged, one in transition

2015-03-02T16:45:00.001-06:00

The deadline to apply tags to players has now passed. Although there was a $10 million increase in
cap space, there wasn't much activity. Perhaps it is in hopes of landing players from what looks to be a stellar free agent class. Only four teams opted to use the franchise tag which keeps a player on his current team for another year. There was one team (Miami) that used the transition tag. Here's a quick rundown of players who were tagged:

Dez Bryant, wide receiver, Dallas Cowboys

There was little question to how this game was going to play out, especially after the video that may or may not be leaked some time soon. Bryant is a top five receiver in this league and many believe he's the best wideout not nicknamed Megatron. With Cowboys owner Jerry Jones questioning Bryant's responsibility but loving his game, tagging the receiver at the price of $12.8 million was an easy choice. He might pay for that choice next offseason but for now the move will pay off.

Demaryius Thomas, wide receiver, Denver Broncos

Thomas received the non-exclusive franchise tag which means he can still talk to other teams about signing a contract. The kicker? If he signs, that team would owe two first round draft picks to the Broncos. That's a high price to pay, but technically possible. Thomas staying in Denver was obvious. He's Peyton Manning's best option and he's a freak. Thomas isn't the player that Bryant is but he's next to impossible to handle one-on-one.

Jason Pierre-Paul, defensive end, New York Giants

JPP registered 12.5 sacks last season. He's the picture of what a 4-3 end should look like. No way he was leaving New York. Re-signing Pierre-Paul in the future could become complicated because of the rising price for edge rushers. Also, once Ndamukong Suh sets a new market value for top tier defensive linemen, JPP will be looking to cash in.

Justin Houston, "linebacker", Kansas City

This could be the ugliest tagging situation of all. Houston was the 2014 sacks leader and broke the franchise record for sacks in a season. His production has been ridiculous for the last two seasons. Kansas City will want to do its best to keep Houston, hence the franchise tag. But the Chiefs can't put current and future players in jeopardy for the sake of signing one player, no matte how good. Houston feels like a deal should've been reached already and is reportedly considering a holdout until week 10. If that's not enough, the never-ending fight as to whether edge rushers in a 3-4 defense are linebackers or defensive ends is going to brought up again (See Terrell Suggs, 2008). The franchise price tag for linebackers is $13.2 million while the price for ends is set at $14.8 million. Per Pro Football Talk, Houston is consulting with the NFLPA on the matter. For now, the best edge rusher in the NFL will remain a Chief. But at what costs?

Stephen Gostkowski, kicker (bruh), New England Patriots

In typical New England Patriots fashion, they opted for the cheaper tag ($4.1 million) and the steady position of kicker over the higher priced proposition of tagging safety Devin McCourty at $9.6 million. Gostkowski's one of the NFL's best kickers. That's enough for the Pats to justify this move.

Transition tagged: Charles Clay, tight end, Miami Dolphins

The scarcely used transition tag (although it was used once just last season) has been applied to Dolphins jack-of-all-trades tight end Charles Clay. This move will cost the Dolphins $7 million which is $1.3 million cheaper than applying the franchise tag. The disadvantage to the transition tag is that if a team signs Clay to a contract the Dolphins refuse to match, there is no compensation for the Dolphins.

Packers cut LB AJ Hawk

Green Bay is beginning to make roster moves. Earlier in the week, Brad Jones was dumped. Now,
fellow linebacker AJ Hawk was let go as well. Hawk spent all nine of his previous NFL seasons with the Packers.

He was released once earlier, but it was a really as a means for a contract restructure. The Packers franchise leader in tackles has also been a loyal member of the franchise. But this is business. Cutting Hawk will save Green Bay $3.5 million and potentially allow them to keep more important players such as wide receiver Randall Cobb and cornerback Tramon Williams.

Hawk has the ability to play inside or outside in a 4-3 scheme as well as inside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme like he did in Green Bay. He may be seen as more of a two-down linebacker and that will diminish his interest level from some teams in this new-age pass-happy NFL.

Reggie Bush released by Lions

2015-02-25T17:11:00.002-06:00

The cap clearing continues today in the NFL. A new free agent will grace the market thank to the
Detroit Lions. Running back Reggie Bush, who spent two seasons with the Lions, has been released.

The 29-year old was due $3.25 million for 2015 and has become expendable. His production dipped because of injuries and a loss of playing time. Bush only managed 297 rushing yards averaging 3.9 yards per carry in nine starts.

Bush will look to land with his fourth team as the release will allow him a chance to find a new home before other free agents can find a new home. His talent will definitely intrigue some.

A game in transition: The NFL's search for longer defensive backs

2015-02-23T17:27:00.002-06:00

As the game of football evolves, certain trends begin to get noticed. Right now, the recent influx of jumbo receivers have the NFL clamoring for taller cornerbacks. The likes of Patrick Peterson (6-2), Richard Sherman (6-3) and even Brandon Browner (6-4) have impacted the way scouts, general managers and coaches evaluate cornerbacks. Just a few years ago, a sub-6-foot cornerback wasn't a knock. A guy just an inch below could still be considered "big." Now, 6-1 and up is the standard.

That's not a bad thing. If you're going to contend with Calvin Johnson (6-5, 235), Dez Bryant (6-2, 220) and Julio Jones (6-3, 220), you better excel physically. The problem, if you're a fan of defense, is two-fold. Firstly, these taller, bigger cornerbacks are in short supply. Unlike receiver, defensive backs have to be able to at the blink of an eye, sometimes quicker. Defensive backs don't know the receiver's route. Trying to keep up with guys who run legitimate 4.4's is a hard enough task without them being able to redirect at their discretion. The taller a player is, the stiffer his movements tend to be. Current Chicago Bears and former San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Vic Fangio explained, “The problem with most bigger corners has always been that they don’t have the quickness or the speed to cover as well as a guy who was your standard corner, but there’s just been a couple here lately, with Richard [Sherman] being the lead guy, that have had success, and now everybody is looking to get the next guy.” Cornerbacks that can match these receivers in size are at a premium. They're also rare. There is only one cornerback in this year's draft who is above the 6-2 label that is now considered "tall." There are only a handful of corners above the 6-0 threshold. We're seeing an in-demand trend with very little supply.
The other problem exists because of the small supply. Taller cornerbacks are rising up draft boards. Smaller, and sometimes more talented corners, are falling in the draft. The NFL is in danger of potentially washing out a breed of its most talent athlete. The undersized corner has often been relegated to nickel back duty. They don't get to press because the pro-offense rules favor the bigger receiver and coaches don't want them on the outside defending jump balls.

Admittedly, if a kid can play, the NFL will find you. At least in theory. However, a football player's career is short compared to most pro athletes and it's over in a flash compared to most other professions. Spending two to three proving you can play is part of the deal, but being ignored based solely on a lack of height is despicable. Maybe the desire for vertically superior cornerback gets curbed in the near future, but if it doesn't, we could be seeing offenses light up the scoreboard at record paces. Remember, the paces now are already more than anything we've seen.

James Casey released by Eagles, already looking for a new home

2015-02-23T16:52:00.001-06:00

The Eagles, like most teams, have begun making roster moves as a means to attack free agency when it begins in March. One move Philly made was releasing tight end James Casey (He's subsequently been added to the free agent TE rankings; sorry for my shameless plug). This move wasn't major and it was strictly about cap space. As a reserve tight end, Casey was expendable.

Casey understood the move and thanked the Eagles for his two-year stop there. He took it in stride. Acually, his stride took him to Arizona where he visited looking for a new team to join. He's also scheduled a visit with the Broncos this week. Casey was a member of the Houston Texans before joining the Eagles. His old head coach, Gary Kubiak, is the new head coach in Denver so it would make plenty of football sense for him. Denver could use a backup tight end because either the franchise's highly productive tight end Julius Thomas is leaving or its promising backup Virgil Green could be out the door. Either way, there will be a vacancy that needs filling at the beginning of free agency for the Broncos.

Also, Casey could look to a team with plenty of cap space like the Raiders. The fit here would be the new offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave. Casey loved his time in Philadelphia and could look to a different type of comfortability by playing in a similar offense to the Chip Kelly-led attack in Philly. Musgrave has already talked about bringing some of the spread system to Oakland. If Musgrave is to run a similar system, having a player or two who knows the offense would help with installation. The 30-year old tight end might also enjoy the possibility of multiple tight end sets such as these:

Pre-season 2013. The Eagles used four TEs (all split out) at once.

Oakland's tight end depth is atrocious. Adding a veteran like Casey would be a real boost.

Casey will no doubt have options as he gets the added benefit of searching for a team while other free agents have to wait until early March.
