Covered from head-to-toe in body paint, these brave models blend in perfectly alongside a succession of wild animals.

After seven-hours in make-up over four days, they look completely at home whether tangling with a 12ft-long python, staring down cheetahs, or riding on the back of an elephant.

The bizarre images were taken by wildlife photographer Lennette Newell and form part of her 'Ani-Human' series of portraits.

Growing up the daughter of a vet in San Francisco, her childhood dream was to become one of the animals her father used to treat.

Some four decades later, the 52-year-old artist has finally realised her ambition - with the help of models who have nerves of steel.

Ms Newell said: 'I wanted to show humans and their animal brothers in a new light that we maybe hadn't been seen before.

'The exotic animals came from in and around Los Angeles from renowned Hollywood and television trainers and we shot at the famous Smashbox Studios in LA.'

A great amount of care was taken to ensure that the animals were treated humanely during the shoot.

Ms Newell said: 'Each of the animals came with their trainers and every second they were observed and watched whenever the models came in contact with the animals.

'Some like Susie the elephant were fine to work with, the only problem she posed was how to get the model Kaela on top.

'In the end we used a long ladder and then we set about photographing inside the mammoth studios.

'For another model, Jasmina, and the cheetah and tigers it was bit different.

'We had to make sure that they were comfortable around her and that she had ample time to make a getaway should they become uncomfortable.'

But the fun project had a serious side as it is meant to remind viewers that man is an animal himself.

'I think that we forget our origins as animals ourselves,' Ms Newell said. 'We need to reconnect with nature and we should be closer to the animals that live on this world.

'We should look on these pictures as something more natural and not as odd as they might first seem.

'I used to fantasise about being the animals that my father used to treat and now with this project I am a little closer.'

Working with 75lb snakes and playful tigers proved difficult for the thin female models.

Ms Newell said: 'The tigers just wanted to play, but with their claws and the fact that Jasmina was naked, it was a problem for her obviously.

'But that aside, the cats were watched at all times and everyone had a great time during the shoot.'

Seen just a handful of times this stunning phenomena is known as the 'smile in the sky.'

Freak weather conditions created this reverse rainbow in Leicestershire where it was pictured by antique dealer William Freeman.

But while the sight looks like an upside-down rainbow, it is actually caused by light shining through tiny ice crystals in the clouds.

Miracle escape of boy, 3, who became wedged behind air-conditioning unit on 8th floor of Beijing

A lucky three-year-old boy had a miraculous escape after he fell from a eighth floor balcony and became trapped in the building's air-conditioning unit.

The toddler, who has not been named, had been left home alone in the apartment in Beijing, China, before he fell.

Neighbours, who heard him screaming in terror, called the police for help. But when they noticed he was starting to slip they decided to take the matter into their own hands.

Nuclear Reactor Amusement Park

Wunderland Kalkar is a unique amusement park built on the site of a never-used power plant, complete with a fast breeder reactor, in Kalkar, Germany.

Construction of the Kalkar nuclear plant began in 1972, but was constantly delayed due to technical difficulties and protests from those concerned about the safety of nuclear power. When it was completed, over 10 year later, authorities decided to pull the plug on the project, and the $4 billion complex was dismantled in less than a decade. The fast breeder reactor remained in place, and in 1995 Dutch entrepreneur Hennie van der Most bought what was left of the Kalkar plant for a mere â‚¬2.5 million and managed to turn it into a profitable amusement park visited by over 600,000 people, every year.

Wunderland Kalkar has around 40 rides, for children and adults alike, and a 400-bed hotel. Among the most interesting features of the park are the swing ride set up inside the cooling facility, and the climbing wall on its outer walls. Also, chairoplanes, quad bikes, go-karts and a whole bunch of other fun gadgets make trips to Wunderland Kalkar a blast for the whole family.

Irene Andersen was born in Denmark in 1966. Raised in Malmo but moved to Gothenburg when she was 20, Irene spent years in the gym, and worked hard to build this wonderful body.

Yolanda Hughes turned pro in 1992 by winning the IFBB World Amatuer Titles and went on to win the 1997 and 1998 Arnold Classic Champion and also made six Olympia appearances. Through her pro career she competed strictly in either the Arnold or the Olympia, never variating to other shows. She competed at around 164lbs and is now retired from bodybuilding, operating her own business in Washington state.

Extinct Baby Gibbon Born

A rare baby Gibbon born at Perth Zoo eight weeks ago is thriving thanks to around the clock care by Perth Zoo staff. Weighing just 610 grams (21 oz.) at birth, White-cheeked Gibbon Nakai is being bottle fed and cared for by Zoo staff until he can be reunited with his mother who had difficulties caring for him shortly after the birth. Nakai is being bottle fed baby milk formula nine times a day including night feeds and has almost doubled his birth weight. He now weighs 1050 grams – just over 37 oz.

“The White-cheeked Gibbon is a critically endangered species quite literally on the brink of extinction so Nakai and every single gibbon is precious,” says Holly Thompson, Perth Zoo keeper and one of Nakai’s primary carers.

“Nakai spent the first few weeks of his life in a humidicrib to maintain his body temperature but now sleeps in a warm room with his teddy bear which is his surrogate mother for now.”

“We exercise him daily, stretching his arms and swinging him while he hangs on to help strengthen his arms and encourage natural gibbon behaviour. His upper body strength is really developing now and his overall progress has been amazing.

“Maintaining contact with his family is extremely important so we take him down to visit his mum Viann, father Phillip and six-year-old sister Kit several times a day. Our aim is to get him back with his family in the next few weeks once he has been weaned off his night feeds.”

Perth Zoo is part of a regional breeding program for the critically endangered White-cheeked Gibbon. Nakai is the 8th White-cheeked Gibbon born at Perth Zoo.

In the wild, habitat destruction and poaching, particularly for the illegal pet trade, has had a devastating impact, with White-cheeked Gibbons now facing a very high probability of extinction in the near future. Formerly distributed throughout China, Vietnam and Laos they are now completely extinct in China and virtually extinct in Vietnam with just a few small populations remaining in Laos.

People can help gibbons and other animals by choosing sustainable products particularly sustainably-sourced timber and not encouraging the exploitation of wildlife by paying to have their picture taken with endangered species when holidaying in these regions.

Perth Zoo’s two White-cheeked Gibbon groups can be seen in the Asian Rainforest zone.

How a naked female scientist tries to tame belugas in the freezing Arctic

Braving sub-zero temperatures, she has thrown caution — and her clothes — to the wind to tame two beluga whales in a unique and controversial experiment.

Natalia Avseenko, 36, was persuaded to strip naked as marine experts believe belugas do not like to be touched by artificial materials such as diving suits.

The skilled Russian diver took the plunge as the water temperature hit minus 1.5 degrees Centigrade.

Belugas are famed for the way in which their faces are able to convey human-like expressions. Certainly Matrena and Nilma seemed to enjoy frolicking with Natalia.

The taming of the whales happened in the Murmansk Oblast region in the far north-west of Russia at the shore of the White Sea near the Arctic Circle branch of the Utrish Dophinarium.

An area of the sea is enclosed to stop whales and dolphins getting out and instructors tame the mammals before they are transported to dolphinariums around the world — a practice many animal conservationists consider cruel.

Belugas have a small hump on their heads used for echo-location and it was thought that there would be more chance of striking up a rapport with them without clothes as a barrier.

However, Natalia is a yoga expert and used meditation techniques to hold her breath and stay under water for an incredible ten minutes and 40 seconds.

There are around 100,000 belugas in the wild.

The first to be held in captivity was shown at Barnum's Museum in New York in 1861, and there are belugas in aquariums and sea life parks across Europe, North America and Asia.

Their large range of 'facial expressions' comes from them having a more flexible bone structure than other whales.

Certainly these two had a big smile for the naked Natalia.

These amazing pictures prove that a bunch of flowers can go a long way - even in the animal kingdom.
A male sand lizard, perched on top of a plant, catches the eye of a female with a beautiful bouquet of flowers.
After she carefully climbs up the plant to reach him, she accepts his gift and the pair form an almost perfect heart shape.

But to prove the coarse of true love never did run smooth, the female then dramatically slips and falls off the plant - only for her doting new partner to dive to her rescue and help her down.
The romantic drama was captured by keen photographer Alexey Tymoshenko.

'I took these pictures in the back of my parents house in Ukraine. I've been visiting there ever since I left home,' Alexey, 19, said.
'When I was a child one of my favourite things I used to do was play in the garden and watch the lizards.
'For many years I've learnt their behaviour - if you're friendly with them they are friendly with you because they get used to you and your hands very soon.

My hero: The female loses her balance and falls, only for her suitor to reach out and gently carry her to safety

'Usually 30 minutes is enough for them to understand you won't do them any harm and now I can photograph them without them being afraid of me.
'But I never thought they could be so passionate and helpful to each other. It was amazing watching one drop and the male dive to catch her.
'And I was especially surprised by the scene with the flower - I'm not a specialist and don't know what it means but it really looked like one lizard is proposing.'

He added: 'I like to photograph nature, especially animals as they don't pose so you can photograph them as they are.'

North of the complex of volcanoes, the city of Futrono and communities of Lago Ranco and Entre Rios are particularly vulnerable to flash flooding.

People have also refused to leave Mantilhue, along the Rio Bueno, just six miles from the volcano eruption.

A group of Mapuche Indians have said they will also seek authorisation to enter the evacuation area to pray for the volcano to stop erupting.

Enrique Valdivieso, director of Chile's National Geology and Mines Service, said the fissure was belching toxic gases and material that could clog rivers and force them to overflow.

The plume of ash has caused the airport at Argentinian ski resort San Carlos de Bariloche to be closed.

The eruption, 575 miles south of the capital Santiago, has also seen a busy border crossing between the two countries shut.

There are four volcanoes in the chain, but it was unclear which one has erupted because of the ash cover and weather conditions. The chain last saw a major eruption in 1960.
