How to update Smoothwall express manually without internet connection

Actually updating Smoothwall express is very simple and easy, just goes to Maintenance menu and click updates tabs. There will be a list about installed updates. You can click check for updates button and click update button if there are new update in list. All done and very easy, but how to update fresh Smoothwall express manually without internet connection?

I have an experience in this problem, after got the answer in Smoothwall support forum; I will share it here to everyone who was browsing for this problem in future.

The first step to update Smoothwall express manually without internet connection is todownload the update patch from here:

Smoothwall Express Update Files

After downloading the patches go to Maintenance menu and click updates tabs. Click advance and then browse the tar.gz file that you have downloaded before. Click upload and you will get this error “This is not an authorised update, or your patchlist is out of date”. What’s going on?

though, you also need the updates list to update your Smoothwall otherwise the updates would be considered invalid. Brand new Smoothwall will not has this list and it will not get this list until it connnect to the internet. This might mean putting a temporary and supported niche in place until it is updated.

alternatively, you could copy the list from a running smoothwall. it is located at /var/smoothwall/patches/available or if you don’t have it you can download from here: available.zip. (NB : unzip it before copying)

After copying that file to /var/smoothwall/patches/ try to open your update menu and there will be a list of updates file. Now, click advance again and browse the tar.gz file, click upload and the updates will be installed in your Smoothwall Express.

How to delete autorun.inf folder in your Flashdisk

Usually autorun.inf folder in our Flashdisk was created by antivirus such as Smadav.

This folder was created to prevent another autorun.inf file infected our flashdisk. This folder is useful and not dangerous but sometime was annoying because we cannot delete this folder like usually we did.

When we tried to delete this folder, it will always say, “cannot remove this folder” quite annoying I think. So, how to delete this folder? Maybe you can use this simple method to do it.

* Open Command Prompt

* The first step is delete aux folder by typing rmdir /s /q [drive]:\autorun.inf\con\aux\ and then press ENTER ([drive] is your Flashdisk location).

* Then delete con folder by typing rmdir /s /q [drive]:\autorun.inf\con\ and then press ENTER.

* The last step is delete autorun.inf folder itself, type rmdir /s /q [drive]:\autorun.inf\ press ENTER.

* Finally autorun.inf folder was successful deleted.

Cannot access firewall settings

Suddenly one of my client computers could not being accessed from the network. I thought it must be something wrong with the firewall setting so I try to open firewall setting in control panel, but every time I tried to open firewall setting it always said, ”Due to an unidentified problem, Windows cannot display Windows Firewall settings.”

What’s wrong with the firewall? It appeared because of a virus or Malware corrupts SharedAccess.reg file. The SharedAccess.reg file represents the Windows Firewall service. In this several days I indeed always try to remove some virus that infect that computer, after removing the virus it appear to effect the network sharing.

How to fix it?
Call the “Setup API InstallHinfSection” function to install Windows Firewall.

To install Windows Firewall, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.

2. At the command prompt, type the following command line, and then press ENTER:

Rundll32 setupapi,InstallHinfSection Ndi-Steelhead 132 %windir%\inf\netrass.inf

3. Restart Windows,

4. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.

5. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER: Netsh firewall reset

6. Click Start, click Run, type firewall.cpl, and then press ENTER. In the Windows Firewall dialog box, click On (recommended), and then click OK.

Ok, now I can already access the firewall settings, sometimes after step2 you can jump to step 5 without restarting the computer, but sometimes need to restart .

Username and password not accepted in gmail pop3

We used java application to check mail programmatically from gmail. It works fine until several days ago we got some report that many users got some error when trying to check mail from gmail. The error said “username and password not accepted. Class java.mail.authenticationFailedException”.

I tried to login to gmail via browser but nothing wrong with it so what’s the problem? I begin to searching google and finally I got the answer. Because of using an application to check mail programmatically so the frequency of checking was very high so gmail use Captcha to block it.

How to solve it? Just got to Unlock Captcha fill your username and password and then unlock it. Problem is solved.

Login to your smoothwall express using mozilla and then go to menu networking->outgoing. Add exception to green interface, choose user defined for application or service and fill the port with 9339. Checklist enable option and click add button.

After adding port 9339 to your smoothwall outgoing exception you will see port 9339 that being used to play zynga poker already in exception

Reboot your smoothwall express and the problem’s solved. You can play zynga poker without being blocked by smoothwall firewall. 

After 5 years, my driving license had expired and i needed to apply for new license because i have moved from my home town to another town so it's impossible to used my old license.

I take a day-off to administer all things i need to get a new driving license in my new town. At first i went to a police station but apparently i had to go to medical check up first to get a health certificate. In that place i got some eyes test. It cost me 15000 IDR.

After getting a health certificate the next things to do is a technical and theory examination.I must go to another place that have a very long distance from police station. why the examination didn't held in police station? i also didn't understand why they choose that place to do an exam for people who want to get new license.Theory test had past and it's continued with technical test such as do a zigzag and ride around a circle. I passed all test and got another certificate and this examination cost me 165.000 IDR.

It's time back to police station to get my driving license but unfortunately in police station after giving all certificate i had got,i must do a final theory examination again. what a tired day. i had finished all question just for 15 minutes and waiting for the result. it needed a long time for them to check all paper examination.

After i had been confirmed that i had passed the test, the next step i must do was paying an administration fee for 75000 IDR, take a photo and get the license.

i had spent my whole day to get my new driving license (09.00 - 17.00).

Enable regedit Using Gpdit.msc

There are many ways to enable or disable your registry editor or regedit. in my two older post i already tell about how to enable your registry editor by creating a reg file or just type a command in run command.

But now, i will tell another ways that can work when those two ways above can not work or when your computer was infected by a virus.

Usually, when our computer was infected by a virus, we can't access the registry editor because our registry value had been changed by the virus. It will show a message dialog that said that the editor was disabled my Administrator.

So, how to resolve it?
here are some tips to enable your regedit again.

open your run command and the type gpedit.msc
it will show you a group policy windows.

Expands user configuration, Administrative Templates and then click System. When your pointer is pointing to System, look at the right side and look for "Prevent access to registry editing tools". Right click and choose properties and then set to disabled. The last steps is restart your computer. All is done, after restarting your computer try to access your registry again. I hope this can solve your problem. :)

Yesterday, I went to a book store and read about how to withdraw money from PayPal to my local bank account. In that article, I found that my account name at PayPal must be match with my account name in local bank in order to withdraw money from PayPal.

The problem begins, when we want to apply PayPal account we must fill the last name although we don’t have a last name. That’s made me filled my last name with my family name although actually in my personal identification card that was issued by our government my name didn’t have a last name.

Using that ID card I applied an account in my local bank and of course my account name in local bank also using the name in my ID card. That made differentiate between PayPal account’s name and local bank account’s name. This differentiate can be a problem when we wanted to withdraw money from PayPal account to local bank account because usually local bank company can’t accept the money if the name do not match between both of them.

So, I contact PayPal’s customer service to change my name from “Scients luo” to “Scients”. After several hours I checked my email and there were already an answer from PayPal but unfortunately they can help me to change my name like I want to, because like we already know last name must be filled in PayPal account. But they offered me to change my last name with “,” so my name become “scients,” and they also ask me to contact my local bank company and ask them whether they can accept “Scients,” as the same like”Scients”.

My local bank company couldn’t give me a promise whether they can accept it or not but they said usually if there are just a simple differentiate between both of the name they can accept it. After that I contact PayPal again via email and in several hours they already sent me an email and told me that they already changed my account name.

I am very satisfied with the PayPal’s services that can help me to solve my problem just in hours and they also always try to satisfy their entire customers.

How to Enable Your Registry Editor (Regedit)-part 2

In my older post, I already post about how to enable regedit and it’s really works in some conditions. But, I recently faced a same problem with my office's computer. When one of the programs runs unstable, I try to use task manager to end the process of that program but when I press CTRL+ALT+DEL the task manager didn’t appear. What the hell is going on? The first things I do were to make sure that my computer free from any virus. I started to scan my whole computer with anti-virus. The result was my computer free from virus. There are no viruses but why my computer has that problem. Maybe that was the effect from the virus that infected my computer several days ago. Sometimes anti-virus can detected and deleted the virus but can’t recover that setting in our computer that already broke by virus. After that I used my first technique to enable registry like my older post, but when I try to run the file it’s said that the registry editor was enabled by administrator. I begin to try another ways, I go to run command and type this: reg delete HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v DisableRegistryTools After that there will appear this question: Delete the registry value DisabledRegistryTools (Y/N)? Choose Y and you can already access your registry editor. You can use this second way to enable your registry editor if the first method didn’t work properly. By enabling the registry editor you can repair your entire computer setting like to make the task manager and the folder options menu become enable again. These two functions are usually disabled if virus infected our computer.
