How? It teaches you how to arrange everything in your home in such a way as to have a lovely energy flow that is positive rather than negative. The effects of that are priceless.

I've been using the principles of feng shui for years in my own home, and have seen drastic changes in the feel of my home when I stick to those principles.

Here's how to incorporate feng shui in the rooms of your log home...

Travertine Tile: The Pros & Cons Of Travertine Flooring, Countertops, And Backsplashes

Travertine is a type of limestone. It is also called calcium carbonate.

Travertine is created when minerals have dissolved in the ground water and then get moved by natural springs and rivers above ground. It is taken from quarries in large blocks and then cut down into smaller blocks.

It has been used for thousands of years in Italy and Turkey, and today Travertine used all over the world for flooring, countertops, backsplashes, and other surfaces where tile is preferred.

Travertine Colors & Styles

Travertine comes in a variety of colors from ivory, to beige, to reddish brown, and even gold -- depending on how much iron is present. It also comes in different finishes such as polished, matte, brushed, or tumbled.

Polished Travertine resembles marble, and brushed or tumbled Travertine has a more antiqued look.

Travertine is easier to cut and shape than many other stones, and because of this, it has become a favorite for many people, including home builders.

Following are some of the pro's and con's of using Travertine tile in your home...

How To Clean & Care For A Copper Sink

Copper has been around since... well the Copper Ages. Around 4,000 BC, during the Eneolithic period, man first began making metal tools. Since those early times, uses for copper has continued to grow.

In the realm of household plumbing, copper pipe is highly desirable. For one, it doesn't react to water. Also, rust and corrosion are not an issue.

At room temperatures, exposure to oxygen creates a very slow chemical reaction leaving a brown/black deposit of copper oxide over the surface. Outdoor exposure will slowly allow a layer of copper carbonate to build up giving copper that nice mellow green layer.

In both cases, this isn't corrosion but rather a protective layer called patina. When it comes to antiques and other copper products like sinks and plumbing fixtures, patina is something that we try hard not to disturb or diminish.

In fact, here are formulas for adding patina to copper surfaces.

One thing's for sure, copper sinks have become very popular in households these days.

Here's what to look for and how to care for a copper sink...

Color Options: Tips For Painting Or Staining Interior Log Walls Or The Exterior Of Your Log Home

I love idea of painting log walls. I really like color and am not afraid of putting it anywhere.

I have seen several log home companies displaying homes that have a painted exterior color.

For example, the pale green home with white trim that is pictured here is from Heritage Log Homes. Beautiful, don't you think?
Dustless Hardwood Floor Refinishing - Pros & Cons

Dustless floor refinishing is a low-cost alternative to refinishing your hardwood floors.

While hardwood floors definitely have the advantage of being easy to clean up after a spill, just like carpeting, hardwood floors can get dirty, damaged, and rough looking over time if not taken care of properly.

Not everyone has the money or inclination to completely strip and refinish their hardwood floors.

Because of this, a new process has been developed that can yield the same or similar results as a full blown refinish -- without most of the headaches.

The process of doing dustless floor refinishing involves a technician scuffing the floor lightly, then adding a chemical to etch it. After that, any minor damage to the hardwood floor is repaired before they apply the new top coat.

Here are the pros and cons of dustless floor refinishing for hardwood floors...

The Best Way To Store Leftover Paint

When we moved into our current home 6 years ago, we stored our leftover interior house paint in the garage.

Now it's dried up and has to be thrown out.

I'm not sure that I actually expected it to last 6 years, but the guy at the Benjamin Moore paint store today didn't seem too surprised to think it could last that long. For real.

He offered this tip to prolong the life of your paint:

When you're done painting, place a piece of Saran Wrap over the opened paint can. Then, hammer the paint can lid on top of that. THEN... store the can upside down for longterm storage.

He said that air is the #1 destroyer of paint. So storing it this way greatly decreases the chances of air seeping in and mixing with the paint. Makes sense to me!

This will be my method of storing paint from now on.

So, why were we painting, you ask?...

Log Home Financing (Or Lack Thereof) Halts Our Log Home Construction Plans

At least for a year.

We have spent the last 2 years in ongoing communication with banks (about a dozen, 4 of which we jumped through their hoops and met all of their contingencies). I can't even begin to tell you how time-consuming and overwhelming it has been to repeatedly gather paper, scan & fax documents, and talk finances day in and day out -- only to end up at the same place where you started 2 years later!

Photos & Ideas For Creating Unique Window Art Inside Your Home

Earlier, I gave a few examples of what makes windowsill decor truly "art" and not just "a storage shelf" for placing everyday items.

Here's another example of how I intend to display interesting items in unusual ways along the windowsills of our new log home...

For starters, I love to incorporate natural rocks and stones into pieces of art and home decor. I've done that for years.

Now, taking this idea to the next level, I plan on adding a few simple stones with words of inspiration on them in select locations throughout my home -- interspersed with a few other random items along a windowsill.

You can even get really creative and make your own word stones. All you need is a few smooth stones and a Sharpie marker, or some paint. Then, add words that mean something to you.

Or, you might find some really colorful word stones that will fit into your windowsill decor perfectly and add a fantastic burst of color.

The point here is to try to find creative ways to display everyday items in unusual ways along the windowsills of your home.

Here are dozens of other ideas for creating fun window art inside your home...

Window Art: Fun Ways To Display Interesting Items On Your Windowsills

I'm always on the hunt for creative and colorful examples of windowsill art -- as inspiration for my own windows inside our soon-to-be-built log home.

In my opinion, windowsill art goes beyond the typical kitchen windowsill displays that you commonly see. You know, the kind of shelf-like displays that take shape more by default (where the kitchen windowsill simply becomes the most convenient place to store certain items) rather than on purpose.

In my new log home, I plan to create fun (yet simple) displays on many different windowsills throughout the house -- as a form of art and casual home decor.

A few things I'm learning:

The wider the windowsill, the better.

You get the best sunlight from windows on the south side of your home, though windowsill displays in any window can be just as charming -- whether it gets direct sunlight or not.

Colorful bottles (like the deep cobalt blue ones) add a brilliant "pop" of color -- especially when displayed against a log/wood window frame.

There's nothing better than a burst of color on a windowsill when the sun is shining in.

I need to start collecting unique items to place on my windowsills now (think: garage sales, yard sales, freecycle, craisgslist, and thrift stores).

My fingers are crossed that we will have many spots perfect for windowsill decor in our new log home. And I'm praying for wide windowsills in a few key locations.

In the meantime, I'm collecting colorful bottles and other small pieces that would make good window art.

How To Turn A Windowsill Into A Work Of Art

In the end, my aim is to have the perfect combination of these types of things along the windowsills inside our home:

artsy bottles - in fun shapes, sizes and colors (including wine & liquor bottles)

clear glass jars - various shapes; some with lids and some without; some filled and some empty

brightly colored containers - could be glass, pottery, even plastic

boxes - lots of fun shapes, sizes and colors; also consider stacking some boxes

antique collectibles and tchotchkes - the possibilities are endless

candles & incense - incense sticks can be poked into a pot filled with sand; reed diffusers also add dimension

colorful bits & pieces - like rocks, stones, pebbles, crystals, broken pottery

"heavy" items like paperweights can create a focal point or a simple pop of color

"real" flowers - I'm not sure if we'll be having any glass block windows in our new home, but I have to admit that flower arrangements look especially charming in front of glass block. (Here too.)

green grass & plants - green means life; adds a lot to a windowsill arrangement

"fake" flowers - used sparingly, they can add texture, dimension, and color

fun collections - things that describe your personality or your hobbies

glass balls and bulbs - "round" is the least common shape used inside a home; that's why it's effective when used in design

fill clear jars with things like marbles, buttons, beans and rocks - fun things like this can often be found at craft stores, antique shops, and thrift stores.
- especially when grouped together or filled with something fun

Certain Things Should Be Used Sparingly

a single "rustic" photo frame - possibly containing a black & white photo or fun caricature or a small piece of framed art

anything made of stained glass

certain books or clocks could add a fun touch and make a statement about who you are and what you like

whimsical words, phrases, or sayings

Bring The Outside In

Lastly, don't forget that sometimes it's fun to hang something interesting outside the window as well like:

a shell arrangement

In my mind, great windowsill art is that which expresses your style or personality by using the fewest number of pieces which are displayed in the most interesting way.
