Amazing Testimony For The Funktion Band!

2015-10-28T21:00:00.000-04:00

The Funktion

Hi Ken,
It has been a blissful whirlwind of a few weeks, but we are finally back to reality and catching up on life, emails, etc.
We want to thank you and everyone else in The Funktion for truly making our wedding PHENOMENAL. You surpassed all of our expectations!! Starting with your rendition of U2's "All I Want is You" for our first dance, which Ross and I continue to talk about because it was (I can't believe I'm saying this...) BETTER than the original, you continued to nail every song throughout the night. Other highlights were Sledgehammer, I Wanna Dance with Somebody , and of course, Shut Up and Dance. Honestly, every song was fabulous, and the entire band had an energetic, fun-filled, entertaining presence. There was never a dull moment, and the dance floor was packed all night. We are still hearing comments from guests about how awesome you were, and many have asked for your contact info for their future events.
Ken, we can't thank you enough for truly understanding our vision and making it a reality. You and the band members made our wedding the most amazing night of our lives.
All the best, and we do hope to get to dance to you guys again soon!!!
Risa and Ross Fridy
P.S. Forgot to mention the fabulous music before and during the ceremony!! Many guests have also complimented your musical rendition of Ripple, among others. Perfection!

NJ Weddings Your Big Days' Time Line

2015-02-28T17:44:00.001-05:00

Wedding Day Timeline:

1. Order vs. Time: When we are constructing a wedding day timeline for a client the order is more important than the exact time. While it’s helpful to map out time blocks, picking an exact time will only set you up for failure. For example: 7:25pm-First Dance, 7:28 Father/Daughter Dance is way too specific. While the song you selected for your first dance may be 3 minutes and 30 seconds this scenario leaves no time for the band to interact with you and set up a meaningful introduction for your father/daughter dance. And chances are, some things will take longer than anticipated and others a little shorter. Instead, identify the order that works best for you and your fiancé and trust your vendors to implement it! A little Flexibility and Trust are key.

2. Ask For Feedback: Once you have a good idea of the flow you and your partner envision for the day, it’s a great idea to reach out to your vendors for feedback. Your band will have some great ideas about how to generate that atmosphere you are looking for and we work with you to ensure everything is set. If you want to create a party atmosphere we suggest a dance set early on to get people moving and on the dance floor. Or maybe having less breaks between speeches and dances so you are able to have longer dance sets.

3. Photo’s: Planning out your photo schedule with your photographer (and planner if you have one) in advance will allow you to capture all the pictures you and your family want and will leave more time for you to actually enjoy your wedding day! Again, you can block out the order for of each category (getting ready, first look, bride and groom portraits, bridal party, family portraits) and discuss how long each may take depending on your needs. Having a list of the people in the posed/group photos is also a great idea. You can give a copy to your photographer and one to your planner. It makes organizing the group shots much easier if you have names in case you have to track people down (but they should know where to be from the rehearsal!).

And, how much time will all your pictures take? The average is about 3 hours. I know that must sound crazy but keep in mind that for a majority of this process your photographer is capturing you experiencing each moment. So, they are taking pictures of you putting your dress on, your dad seeing you for the first time, having fun with your bridal party…and those moments are priceless (and usually make for the best photos)!

4. Arrival Times: Most likely, your vendors have already indicated approximate times for their arrival and departure. Make sure to factor these times into you timeline. For example, if your officiant is arriving to the ceremony location 60 minutes prior, you may want to schedule the signing of the marriage license about 15 minutes after they arrive. This way the two witnesses you select to sign the license are prepared and no time is wasted tracking them down!

5. Flow: A key to any successful event is setting the right flow for your guests (bridal party included). Simplify your timeline by minimizing the travel time between ceremony, picture locations and the reception venue. While you want your night to never end, extending your reception past five hours will leave many guests exhausted (and add to your costs). Instead of adding an extra hour, consider hosting an after party where guests can attend, if they wish.

A Good idea- When your wedding day comes, identify a point person that you trust so you don’t have to worry about the timeline. The point person can ensure the flow of the entire day is seamless and everyone (including you and your fiancé) have a great time! But, it’s important to make sure this person can be there from start to finish, not just at the reception.

There is no set formula for creating the perfect timeline but there is an Art To The Flow, there is not a right or wrong. Count on your vendors to help guide you in the right direction (they’ve all done this many times).

And, most importantly on the day of your wedding…take a deep breath and let everything fall into place--

Remember-Its a Party!

Tips to planning a fun wedding reception | Wedding Planning Ideas

ADD A LOUNGE AREA TO YOUR RECEPTION

If at all possible, create a lounge-like area in your reception space. Why? People can get antsy. Instead of having your guests sit around the same dinner tables all night, a change of environment will promote conversation and keep even your nondancing guests entertained. Look into renting or borrowing couches, chairs, and other pieces of furniture that you can then stage with pillows and votive candles in your wedding colors. A lounge area also gives people the opportunity to ham it up in pictures!

Also, tell your guests about a late night treat or events. Nothing stops a party in its tracks faster than guests heading for the door early. Take out an insurance policy against a skimpy crowd and plan a treat for the end of the night that people will look forward to: You and your new spouse can perform a song with the band for the last dance, or you can plan a reception getaway that’ll keep guests excited!

Lastly, remember- its a party. Your celebration! Our experience- keep formalities early in the night so the music fills the night. Momentum and flow happen magically with the right band!

CONTINUOUS MUSIC OR NO CONTINUOUS MUSIC NJ WEDDING

CONTINUOUS MUSIC OR NO CONTINUOUS MUSIC NJ WEDDING

Continuous Music or No Continuous Music

Many companies will use continuous live music as a selling point. This is already built into the pricing. We are a bit uncertain of the actual value of that extra 20-25 minutes when, with some proper planning- its not necessary. It is your choice of course. However we believe a break is good for the musicians as well as dynamically for your guests.

Generally, your affair is 5 hours in length beginning with cocktails followed by a 4 hour reception. Most often the keyboardist is playing the cocktail hour. In about 30% of our wedding events, the keyboardist/guitarist is playing the ceremony as well. Thats about 6 hours.

What we feel – at meal time is give our fingers and your guests’ ears a short break and put on some pre recorded music you may love but the band may not get to. Its also a very short dynamic change after several hours to chat with some light recorded back ground music. This gives everyone a chance to recharge and refresh.

Funktion band nj

During this break is a perfect time for those speeches- then a few minutes of back ground music. Before you know it- the band is back. Make sense? Why would you pay extra … lets just time it right

The biggest effect is the dynamic change in the room – when the band comes back on – its massive and impressive! Your guests are ready to go! So, for a short 15 – 20 minute break we take to eat as your dinner comes to an end for all -it is worth not only saving you $200-$300 others may charge — its very worth it to have your band fully energized – the speeches done – and we are ready to rock your party!!

Best Regards,

Ken Negri

Band Leader

Your Reception or PartyThe Do's and Don'ts

2015-02-03T08:21:00.000-05:00

OK- We have been there and have seen it all. More small tips for a great reception or party

DON’T: Call for group photos when the dance floor is packed:

When your photographer decides to take group shots when the dance floor is rockin’, either 1/2 the dance floor goes outside to take the picture, or the bandleader has to clear the dance floor to do these shots. This kills the momentum of the party.

DO: Try having the photographer do group shots during background music time. The bandleader will be happy to coordinate this with your photographer.

DON’T: No dance music during the meal:

Quite often, the caterer or venue asks the band to stop the dancing and get everyone seated for dinner, and then does not bring out food for 10 or 15 minutes. We know the importance of having everyone seated to enjoy the main course while it is hot.

However, we are very skilled at taking the cue from watching the servers, and will automatically slow the music down once service really begins.

DO: It is also important to play some DANCE music between courses. If you play only slow music while all of the courses are served and eaten, everyone may get very full and it will be difficult to get them up and dancing afterward. How much dancing that goes on at the event is directly proportional to how much FUN they have. This is what they’ll talk about for years to come.

DON’T: No dance music until after dinner:

Similar to the previous tip is when the client asks the band to wait until after dinner to start playing upbeat music. Often this leaves guests to initially enter the room to background music, instead of lively music that says “there’s a party goin’ on!”

DO: Have the band play as soon as the banquet doors open allows the band to warm up the crowd. It also goes a long way toward pleasing those guests who might not be into the all out fast dancing that often takes place after dinner. Herein begins the energy.

DON’T: Meeting with the band between songs:

Whenever the client, a guest, or party planner attempts to micro manage and instruct the band frequently on the night of the event, it can hurt the flow of the party, and can quickly clean the dance floor. Anything more than just a note or a quick statement is a distraction.

DO: All of the details will worked out, and make all of your requests known, prior to the party.

DON’T: Be selective but leave the rest to us:

We know it is your day, and we tailor the music to your tastes. However, the bandleader knows the songs that work well with each other, and how to organize those songs to get the best response from the crowd.

Clients often think they know what their guests are going to like, only to be surprised during their event at what songs their guests respond to.

DO: We found that what works best is to pick some of your FAVORITES and let the band work them into a performance that will energize ALL of the guests attending your event.

We recommend you put together a list of songs you do not want played, so the bandleader knows to avoid playing these songs.

What makes a great band-NJ

Their individual talents are remarkable, together they are spectacular. From old school funk, to new school pop, the band played it all – and they played it very well! Their joyful energy electrified the crowd and had many, if not all, people dancing to their funky tunes. WHO NEEDS A RADIO WHEN YOU HAVE THE FUNKTION BAND?!?!

It was a blessing to have the opportunity to hear and dance to The Funktion Band on that special day; it was by far the best part of my day. Upon finishing their time on stage, I stood around to meet the team of highly passionate and enthusiastic musicians. They gave me their business card and I noticed something that made me smile; their mission is to move people! On Saturday, September 20 at Point Pleasant Beach, NJ, The Funktion Band completed their mission by moving hundreds of people through their collective, positive, electrifying spirit.

THANK YOU Funktion Band for making my day, and THANK YOU Point Pleasant Beach for making it possible.

Sincerely,

Tips For Your Big Day- From The Funktion Band

2014-12-06T16:05:00.000-05:00

Tips For Your Big Day

Ingredients needed for an amazing party are very simple.. Think about the greatest times you have ever had... chances are it was spontaneous.. alive.. and you were with the ones you love... Period!

Your party...although planned should be no different

Allow the proper ingredients to play:

You-The Company-The Entertainment

You’ve booked all your vendors, found the dress of your dreams, paid all your deposits and nabbed Mr. Right. The only thing left is The Big Day.. Every client says the same thing, cant wait for you to rock our party and have everyone dance…Every parent, best man, and bridal member know this is ultimately what Everyone is looking forward to and what will be remembered.

So lets do it.

A little planning goes a long way:
The Itineraries we create with you is a tool the venue, the band and clients appreciate dearly. In fact, we send a copy of the itinerary is sent to the Maitre D at the venue about 2 weeks prior to the big day. Most are surprised and appreciative to have received anything from the entertainment in advance. They have so much on their plate that it is a relief to have something well prepared and detailed in advance. What this paperwork accomplishes more than anything is allow the happy couple to breathe knowing all is taken care of with their input!

The timeline/itinerary is a living document and we are willing to make changes updates at the last minute- Things happen and will be prepared and are as flexible as we need to be to ensure your event is flawless. This paperwork is not attained through a 3rd party, a secretary, or an agent.

With The Funktion-You deal only with the bandleader who will be at your event.

Having done this many many times, we encourage you to put your stamp on your day. Be you and yours and create your own script! I work very closely with clients and build a wonderful chemistry that allows a clear and open channel of communication. OK- let the ideas flow and lets put your reception together!

3 Simple Things on keeping things moving:

1. All your first dances right after the introductions: Yes- You have everyones attention and they are all right there with you. More time for dancing and partying later without slowing down. Of course it is your choice and there is no right or wrong. Each song is approximately 3 minutes long.. OK – thats about 10 minutes and photo ops were had, all were present, and we keep flowing. This works very well!

2. Limit speech length to 5 minutes. Many a wedding have had very lengthy speeches. All are wonderful, heartfelt and very moving. It has happened where multiple speeches each going 10-20 minutes in length.. Food service may be delayed as well as time for dancing can be shortened considerably. A good time for more intimate speech may be the rehearsal dinner. Think of your guests as well that are excited for you and want to have a wonderful time with you..
Just something to be mindful of.

3. Remember this is a celebration of your union.. A party. Relax- Enjoy a fun and exciting day that you created

4. A Great Band

Just awesome!! posted 9/22/2014 via The Knot
The Funktion came recommended to us by one of our bridesmaid's sisters. She had nothing but great things to say about her own experience with them. We agree! From the start organization and package detail was helpful in deciding what we needed for the night of our wedding. Ken was our band leader the night of and we just had the best time. He kept the night moving but never made us feel like we were being rushed from one thing to another. Additionally, they learned a few Phish songs which the band played during our dinner (my husband's favorite band). This helped add just a little personal touch to our celebration. We received SO many compliments on the band! Just The Best!!

Dear Ken,

I cannot thank you enough for the amazing performance last night at the Cairnwood Summer Wine Tasting. Our guests raved about the music and it blows my mind that you were able to get the crowd dancing. Your band turned a simple wine tasting into a memorable party! Also – your band members are so professional, kind and easy to work with. It is refreshing to meet a group that you know is having fun and truly enjoying the event as much as we are. It truly was a magnificent night and I hope to see you again at Cairnwood very soon.

Sincerely,

What separates a great celebration from an ok one?

2014-08-01T22:18:00.001-04:00

Ok, we now have performed at probably 300 weddings in the last 4 years. Its an amazing accomplishment and certainly a testament to quality driven live live music. What I ask every client is this:
What do you really want on your big day?

Answer: For my guests and I to have a great party and everyone to dance and enjoy themselves.

My response: Us as well.

This is a universal response that may seem at first over simplified, but think about it. Your event, wedding, gathering of family and friends is first and foremost a celebration!!. Period. All the prior work of planning is done... So then, this leads me to ask my next question ....
What separates a great celebration from an ok one?

Answer: Usually "dancing, fun, laughing, relaxed, comfortable, great atmosphere, energy"

My response: Yes all correct, there only 3 ingredients to a great celebration

1. You
2. The company you bring
3. The Energy of the Entertainment
If you took away:
favors, cakes, fancy limo, pumping digitized music, photo booths, could you still have one of the most memorable nights of your life?
Answer: A Resounding yes

These are all great things to have at your party if you choose. Nothing wrong and can absolutely add to the celebration.
Now as musicians we know there is no substitute for great live music. If you have ever been to a concert, you know this as well. There is energy in the strings, the notes, the vocal chords of the band when its beautifully constructed delivering your songs that move you.

How do we do it?

Together. We get to know you and from our relationship comes a great working relationship to put together a performance you will never forget.
Spontaneity - Yes!! We are 100% live and have the amazing ability to break songs down, add horn lines-get you and your guests involved, be musically creative, mix songs - all in the name of ----
Energy- Our Mission is to Move You! The Funktion Band is Electric
Talent - Some of the best musicians of New Jersey and New York
Our own sound - A great band you will recognize. Ability to play as the radio or put our stamp on a song. You know when you hear and see The Funktion
