Should You Take a Swing on The Lifestyle?

So, what’s your sign? Yeah, it’s an old cliché pick-up line, but according to one very scientific study, whether or not you’re a Leo or a Cancer, also says a lot about the chances you’d be down for the swinging lifestyle. The signs more likely to head out to a swingers party tonight? Well, that would be Leo, Gemini, Sagittarius, Aquarius and Aries. More apt to stay in with their one and only: Virgo, Cancer, Capricorn and Scorpio.

So, now that we know each other a little better, just what exactly is swinging, or The Lifestyle as it’s commonly known? Sounds sort of sleazy, right? And, that’s mainly because swinging is greatly misunderstood by a lot of people. I remember about four years ago when I met my first swinger. I judged him very harshly – drugs, trashy, STDs and coercion come to mind. Well, I have no problem admitting when I’m wrong, and I was way wrong.

Swingers tend to be very suburban people. The majority have lucrative careers, greatly discourage drug use, while encouraging safe sex. Oh, and the women tend to have all of the control, determining which couples they will and won’t play with.

And, I say couples because swinging typically involves couples, either monogamous or married, who exchange sex/sex acts. There are roughly 15,000 people swinging around the world right now. Yes, singles can swing too and are referred to as swingles; however there usually isn’t a welcome mat out for swingle men – for obvious reasons. But, swingle women are highly regarded and known as unicorns due to the fact that they are rare and hard to find.

It’s important to note that swinging is not polyamory. As mentioned, swinging is an exchange of sex/sex acts. And, although swingers do enjoy a lot of socializing together, there is no emotional bonding; whereas polyamory entails actual relationships, involving both a physical and emotional connection. There are also different types of swinging: soft, open, and closed.

If you’re new to the scene, you may opt for soft swinging as intercourse is off-limits. Open swingers freely have sex with different partners in an open area, while closed swingers swap partners and have sex in different rooms. Of course, rules may be implemented, if desired. Think along the lines of “Pretty Woman”, you know, the no kissing rule. Newbies are usually the rule makers. Just envision having sex without kissing. Awkward. It’s like just eating one potato chip. Suffice to say, rules tend to fall by the wayside.

One question that consistently comes to people’s minds when they hear about The Lifestyle, is why? As in, “Why would anyone do this?” And, one answer that consistently is given is, “It makes our relationship so much better.” Other popular answers: eliminates cheating and lying, spices up their sex life, boosts self-esteem, and offers them something to do together. Hey, some couples go to lunch together, others swing. Don’t judge.

Even though swingers boast of the positive benefits reaped from swinging, they also are quick to point out that a strong, stable relationship is a much before diving into The Lifestyle. In other words, swinging will not strengthen an already weak relationship. So, if insecurity, jealously and/or worry are swirling around your relationship, swinging is not for you.

But, if you and your partner are down for the experience, there are several ways to get into it.

Websites: Offer the cheapest, quickest and fastest way to hop on the swing. Just be aware of sites with a lot of pornography and explicit language.
On-Premise Clubs: Private parties at resorts, conventions, and spas that are designed for people to have sex on site. Think along the lines of playrooms, dance floors, and bondage gear. On-premise sites are BYOB and have an entry or membership fee. Also, keep in mind, that you will watcher other people and they will watch you.
Off-Premise Clubs: Events at jazz clubs, wine bars, etc. Clearly sex will not be had here, but you may meet someone(s) and take the party back to your place or a hotel. Off-premise clubs tend to attract a younger crowd, don’t have a fee, serve booze and a great for beginners because they’re less intimidating.

“The Rocky Horror Picture Show” plays each Saturday night at MadCap Theaters where guests are encouraged to dress up in scantily clad outfits and costumes as they interact with the in-theater actors. The movie is the longest-running theatrical release in film history. It has become a cult classic at many theaters around the country. The parody film is being released in honor of the 1977 movie. Adult parodies of movies is said to be the fastest growing adult film segment. The adult film will be released by Wicked Pictures on May 2 but is exclusively available at the Tempe (Elliot Rd.) Fascinations store on April 29 & MadCap at the event on April 30.
