Don’t wait to create or make something.

We learn by doing, by trying and making mistakes. But the best way to harness the power of computers doesn’t reside in coding – it resides in letting computers do the grunt computational work that humans are bad at, so that humans can focus on the creative, problem solving work that computers are bad at.

And if you want to foster those creative, problem solving skills, the solution isn’t learning to code – it’s learning to paint. Or play an instrument. Or write poetry. Or sculpt. The field doesn’t matter: the key thing is that if you want to foster your own innovative creativity, the best way to do it is to seriously pursue an artistic endeavor.

In the history of the Nobel Prize, nearly every Laureate has pursued the arts. According to research by psychologists Michele and Robert Root-Bernstein, “almost all Nobel laureates in the sciences actively engage in arts as adults. They are twenty-five times as likely as the average scientist to sing, dance, or act; seventeen times as likely to be a visual artist; twelve times more likely to write poetry and literature; eight times more likely to do woodworking or some other craft; four times as likely to be a musician; and twice as likely to be a photographer.”
”

- To Foster Your Creativity, Don’t Learn To Code; Learn To Paint - Forbes (via ayjay)

A newspaper blackout poem.

There is serious gold in here. Check out the article linked above. A small snippet:

“That one new feature you added? That sparkly, Techcrunchable, awesome feature? What did it cost your user? If the result of your work consumes someone’s cognitive resources, they can’t use those resources for other things that truly, deeply matter. This is NOT about consuming their time and attention while they’re using your app. This is about draining their ability for logical thinking, problem-solving, and willpower after the clicking/swiping/gesturing is done.”

19m talk by Seth Godin entitled “Backwards”.

There is so much good stuff in here, I don’t know where to begin, so I’ll have to come back later to make notes. Suffice it to say, find a few moments if you can, and watch. :)

Some great points he emphasizes:

–Crisis can produce a calm that comes from complete focus/engagement and leads to making intuitive decisions instantly

–Getting things done is not about getting things done; it’s about being appropriately engaged in each thing

–The more something is on your mind, the more you’re not making progress on it; it means you haven’t put it into a system that you trust to resolve it

–We need a balance of perspective and control so that instead of being a victim, crazy-maker, or micro-manager, we become captain and commander

–“Nature does not hurry anything, yet gets everything accomplished”

–#1: Get it out of your head - write everything down so it stops draining your psychological energy

–#2: For anything that takes more than one step, clarify the outcomes, and identify the next concrete action

–#3: Create maps so you can see the big picture and enable good intuitive decisions

–#4: Course correct at periodic intervals

Of course, there’s more, so be sure to check out the full 22m - hope you enjoy!

Then, put your work out in public as part of the process itself—if you’re making homebrew beer or an Arduino hack, make a video or write about the process as a means to think harder about the details of it. If you’re a writer, think of putting it online as simply having the work backed up in one more place. But if you can focus on slow, deliberate movements, then your smoothness will translate to getting the job done faster and safer.

Now I have absolutely no occasion to draw a weapon. None whatsoever. But, here’s where this SEAL-ism hits home for me. I can tend to think that frenetic and frenzied and crazy-brained is how I must live to keep up with this world, technology, my schedule, others’ expectations of me, etc. What if approaching life with deliberate calm, a sense of intention, and measured movements would, in the end, yield greater productivity and efficiency?
”

-
A good lesson.
