Aunt Cecilia Montes Maico - GBS Journey

My Aunt Cecilia is an active servant of our church. She has been visiting places to spread the good news and preach the gospel of Christ.

Recently, she was diagnosed with GBS or Guillain-Barré syndrome. It is a disorder in which the body's immune system attacks part of the peripheral nervous system. The first symptoms of this disorder include varying degrees of weakness or tingling sensations in the legs.

In many instances the symmetrical weakness and abnormal sensations spread to the arms and upper body. These symptoms can increase in intensity until certain muscles cannot be used at all and, when severe, the person is almost totally paralyzed.

In these cases the disorder is life threatening - potentially interfering with breathing and, at times, with blood pressure or heart rate - and is considered a medical emergency.

Our family, relatives and friends were able to finance the first phase of her treatment. She is responding well to all her medications and we believe we have a good chance of survival. Because GBS is a rare disease, the treatment is very expensive, thus we are knocking on your door to seek help on the next phase of her medication.

Any help will be appreciated and we’re also asking you to share this page because we desperately need any help at this point in time.

Let us give her another chance in life and help her claim victory over GBS.

The alarm clock just told me that I should be moving now, otherwise I will be late for the morning rituals in the office. Clicked the time clock-in, sign-in as if like you are attending a party and the guest book is required. Seriously, we need this one just in case our state of the art system would be on vacation leave, at least we have a back-up. In the office we never settle for plan A, we always have plan B and plan C. The plan just never stops. Grin.

I have to make rounds to make sure everyone is not wearing their IDs. They have to keep it in their bags and you have to remind them every morning. Why do I never get tired of doing this? Do I sound like your mom? Nothing really serious about it, I just want to make them laugh and smile at me while I am reminding them to flash their IDs proudly. We are doing good and of course, we have to make them feel that we are doing good. Mother said, "smile before you answer the phone, the person on the other line will notice it." Are you sure about this mom? Then why did you terminated our contract with Bayantel?

Taking calls is really tough and sometimes the reality of it can be found in social networking sites when a colleague would post some funny stuff on his/her timeline just so everyone will know how was the day came through. I know its tough. I've been there answering calls and the best part of every call is what? Jeez! I forgot. My employer will kick my ass because of this. I'm really sorry. If you feel you need to enroll me in one of those workshops again, please...I think I need it. Just kidding.

Now, looking at the control monitor if we have calls waiting to be served and I would go yelling, "we have 1 call waiting, it might be your mom calling you!" Again it's another way to loosen up the floor and making them relax and continue with their transaction with a smile on their face. I hope I am doing this right. Tell me if my jokes are corny or I would appreciate if one day one agent will approach me and tell me, "Oh Lester, stop it. Your jokes are way like the stone age period."

Everything is serious of course in every transaction and remember guys, don't forget to say it sincerely..."Good morning this is Lester! How may I help you?"

People's Champion - Buyogan Festival

The crowd went wild when the pride of Leyte was introduced to perform the famous dancing bees of Abuyog. It was a clear manifestation that indeed, they are the most expected and regarded as one of the best-performing groups in the country.

Most of us had high hopes and expected that Buyogan will once again bring home the highest tangible recognition of the competition, unfortunately, this time it was Tribu Pan-Ay of Dinagyang Festival who bagged the most coveted title for this year's Aliwan Fiesta hosted by Manila Broadcasting Company.

We have given the best shot and for the world to know, it was not as simple as eating peanuts. There were many exhausting nights after a series of grilling rehearsals and it was like a crazy formula of doing it over and over just to satisfy the eyes of the master choreographer.

Yes, it was obvious that we are the favorite of the hard-to-please Filipino crowd. The reaction from most of the live viewers could be a gauge that they were filled with so much satisfying emotion to what they were witnessing. In my own opinion, it was a gauge that we are giving the best performance and the nonstop cheer was more than an expensive recognition that somewhere in the eastern part of Leyte, there is a Festival that is worth my attention - The Buyogan Festival!

We won the hearts of the crowd and for me, it was the best reward in the competition. Viva Abuyognon!

Tribu Buyoganon

Aliwan Festival is not another display of pride from all over the country, each contingent must have prepared only the best of the best that they can showcase at the bustling capital city of the Philippines - Manila.

Abuyog is a simple town located on the east of the Visayas group of islands. It has never been known to anyone, not until the synchronized beating of drums, that plays a song that the vibrant colors of dancing bees, that can captivate your attention. It is always a jaw-dropping performance that deserves a standing ovation, after they grace the stage with contagious smiles, you will never regret a front row seat.

Preparation is more than the toughest job on earth for the Buyogan Team, they practice every night and every move of every dancer never goes out without the meticulous eyes of the head choreographer, and it's as if they are giving the final spread. I could only imagine myself frustrated and walking out of the crowd if it's my routine that I cannot perfect. My great admiration goes to everyone who painstakingly took this challenge to share their graceful interpretation of our most admired Buyogan Festival. There must be times when they missed some important occasions because they have to be in that rehearsal that ends almost midnight if they are lucky to get a good impression from the head choreographer.

This competition is not about bagging the title, however, the main purpose is to display the talents, teaching the youth of discipline, value of their passion, and our festive interpretation of worship to the One who makes every moment of this life more meaningful if we are in harmony with nature. A loud message to everyone that we should always look after our environment while we move forward to a brighter future.

Boracay, Again?

Another birthday celebration that we decided to hit the sands of Boracay because it gave us the best memories and our little Clive just can't get enough of the pristine waters of the island. It seemed like they have a good relationship that when he starts to play in the sand, don't dare pick him up, or else you will encounter a major tantrum. I have to condition him so eagerly so I won't have awkward attention from the people at the beach.

This trip was initially planned by Brian who was arriving from Dubai to experience the sun, sand, and fun. They made advance arrangements for everything except for the accommodation because we all knew that we could get a good bargain when we get there. Although part of it is a risk of not getting what we wanted, we have credit cards ready to battle with the fancy hotels for an overnight stay while we scout for the best and the cheapest room on the island.

We left our house so very early to catch the first flight leaving for Ilo-Ilo. We have to take a diverted route because the flight was full and few of you may know that our free travel benefit works only if there are vacant seats left. It was an Airbus flight and there were more than enough seats for us to be accommodated. Our companion was traveling on a revenue ticket and it's their first time in Ilo-Ilo as well as Boracay.

Upon arrival, we took the van for SM Mandurriao for 50 bucks each, then got so lucky to find an empty van for hire going to Caticlan. We took the 5-hour ride from Ilo-Ilo and we had a quick lunch stopover somewhere. I am not sure if it was Antique but we were kind of joking about Capiz. I was not in the mood to be asking questions because I was concerned about the size of the meat we were eating. I don't even believe in those things but it was really funny it made me think about it for a while. By the way, the fare was 385PHP each. I was reminded of a sign I saw in Bora - "500 per each per head."

We passed by Kalibo and I showed them the place I stayed and the Mercury Drug Store where I used to buy bottled water and chips when I was there to facilitate training.

It was around 4:00 PM when we arrived in Jetty Port and the usual drill followed. I would get inside first together with Clive, while my wife secures everything, from tickets down to terminal fees. The terminal was not crowded with the usual bunch of Koreans who are amazingly populating most of the best tourist spots in the country.

Then when we reached station 2, the usual place that we check-in was full that time so we have to look for a place to stay. We have no choice but to take the 1,500PHP overnight stay at the back of Patio Pacific. It was for transients and the place was decent but I could not say if it was secure. After we settled our things inside, we went to St. Vincent's Cottage and were guaranteed an available room the next day for only 1,200PHP. Too bad we can't get the usual price of 800PHP a night because they told us that it was almost peak season. Well, I felt it was like it because it was hard to find a place to stay at a better price, secure and comfortable.

It was only me and my wife who knew that it was her birthday. We were on our island hopping adventure and had our lunch near Club Panoly. This is where I took this picture of Clive.

Later that night we had a bottle of Bacardi courtesy of Brian and it was a happy birthday.

Moments like this are simply the best when you enjoy it with the people you treasure and love. You give more meaning to another year of wishful thinking, crazy petty quarrels, and a love that is naturally unfolding after all the struggles of understanding the reason why you ended up with someone you sometimes can't stand with. It is not about how long you have kept holding on, but how you see yourself still standing beside the same person you held your hands within your most difficult times.

If the sweetest place on earth today is Boracay, then I am willing to spend another significant celebration with you again my island of great moments. We will walk again on the beautiful sands of Boracay like this child below walking so free. That is Basty our "Byaherong Paslit" sporting his new Boracay shirt.

My Bora Birthday Treat

I celebrated my birthday last year on the beautiful beach of Boracay. I was with my family and very close friends to share the moment of celebrating another year of thanksgiving.

Boracay was always not that appealing to me whenever people would talk about their experience with the island. They said, it is a paradise island and they would like to return to experience the white sands of Boracay. I was never really a fan of the island, not until when we first went there with the family of my wife. It was indeed an enchanting place full of people, all of which just waiting for their one great moment with a special someone or a future special someone from the sea of wandering people.

Yes, there are seasons when the accommodation could slice a big part of the budget, but I would always suggest looking for a secure place to stay and not go for the fancy one. After all, your purpose is to explore the white sands and bask under the sun then enjoy some thrill ride in the blue waters of the island.

Food can be expensive when you opt for fine dining but some places offer decent food at a very affordable price. There are fast food chains scattered and if your accommodation has a place to cook, you can explore the wet market. We cooked our food, this way we were able to save a lot and enjoy our best dishes.

I was surprised by a birthday song by midnight and a cupcake that nobody can afford to buy the thought of sheer happiness I felt. We had some bottles of beer before hitting the sack and yes they know I can't stay any longer because I have to fly to Bangkok on the next day - my birthday.

This is one of my greatest moments with the people I love and will be part of my travel treasure. Thank you JL, Ebet, Ahra, Flordan, Annalee (Dear), and my wife and Clive. I love you all!

Boracay has served a pocket of the best moments that I will forever keep in my heart. Whenever I feel like reminiscing, I'm sure I can always fly in and out of the island.

Khob-kun-Ka Bangkok!

I brought home a good impression of Bangkok. The people that are warm and friendly that you somehow feel the same hospitality as Filipinos.

The streets are almost litter-free and the vehicles are not honking even if you see traffic similar to Manila. I have observed that they are very religious and the people are pleasant. Public transport is a good example of that when loading and unloading passengers. They let the people get out of the train first and wait patiently before they board the train. I have not seen them pushing each other to get a space on the train.

There are many convenience stores on every corner of the street. I was able to have a free time although in the evening but not that late and I was able to explore Silom night market and the aroma of their street food would send you guessing what food could it be. I like the taste of the sticky rice and the fried chicken that is very affordable. Rice noodles are the best and they have that spice that will kick your appetite to another level.

I went inside 7-11 and was looking for a beer to help me sleep. I was kind of choosy that night because most of the beers on display were local and finally when I saw San Miguel Beer I immediately opened the cooler compartment, only then I was told by the crew in Thai and made a hand signal "no, no." He showed me the sign and it says that you can no longer buy a beer if it is 9:00 PM or 10:00 PM (not sure of the time though). But I am sure, you cannot purchase liquor beyond their cut-off time. You can enjoy them, however, if you are inside the bar or someplace that serves beer.

My experience in Bangkok was enchanting and at the same time gastronomically rewarding. My new friends took me to Baiyoke Sky for an evening buffet, a lunch over at Shangri La Restaurant and a birthday treat at some posh seafood restaurant in Bangkok.

The ruins of Ayutthaya and the elephants that make you feel so small will be part of my treasured travel experience. Exploring the floating market while eating one of the best rice noodles - Pad Thai. I was able to haggle a souvenir that was originally priced at 1,500BAHT and I got it for only 400BAHT. Thanks to my Thai-speaking friends.

I would be back and experience again Bangkok!

The Sakla Queen

Uy ha, eto na naman itong kwento ng buhay ko ibabahagi ko sa inyo para naman minsan ay maging batayan ako kahit sa isang aspeto ng iyong buhay. Oo. Mahilig ako sa sugal, parang ito yata ang pwede kong gawin na hindi ko pwedeng pagsawaan. In fairness, hindi ako maselan pagdating sa pagwawaldas ng kakarampot na pera galing sa mga mayayaman kong kaibigan at barya-baryang kotong.

Hindi man umusad ang career ng saklaan dito sa Abuyog, sa palagay ko naman ay may idea kayo tungkol sa high-end na sugal na ito. Kung wala ka naman alam kung ano ang tinutukoy ko ay maigi pang magtanim ka na lang ng kamote kesa naman sa aksayahin mo ang oras sa kakabasa ng blog na ito. Don’t get me wrong ha, pero nakakatuwa naman talaga magsugal kasi kung yumaman man ako dito, ang saya ng experience at thrilling experience diba bago yumaman. Baka ako na yata ang pinaka unang sugarol na yumaman at ito ay isang malaking contribution ko sa kasaysayan ng PAGCOR.

Kadalasan nilalaro ang sakla pag may lamay or may dedbol kasi mainit ito sa mata ng batas lalo na sa mga pulis na umaasa sa kotong kesa sa buwanang sahod nila. May mga pagkakataon din na umaarkila pa ng patay para lang mairaos ang grand sugal na ito. Parang big time talaga eh no? Pero wala tayong magagawa dahil illegal talaga itong sugal na Sakla. Ang sagwa naman ng pangalan eh no? Wag ka! Maraming lulong sa bisyong ito, wag na nating idamay ang mga pangalan nila at baka magkaroon pa tayo ng instant kaaway at mahaba rin ang listahan na’yon.

Nagawi ako sa Bisig ng Kabataan sa may bandang Sangandaan. Oo. Dyan sa Caloocan, tama ka. Nagkataon ata nung buwan na’yon walang nalalagas na tao kaya dahil sa kating-kati na talaga ang mga sugalero’t sugalera, talagang nagpa latag na ng baraha para simulan na ang Sakla tournament.

Sarap na sarap talaga ako sa kakalaro at ganado na talaga ako sa kakababa ng bet ko. Fresh na fresh pa nga ako nung time na yun kasi tagal ko na rin kasing hindi sumasalang sa bakbakan ng Sakla. Naalala ko pa yung sabon na gamit ko, syempre Dove. Hindi kasi ako hiyang sa mga murang sabon at muntik na akong ma confine sa allergy.

Nasa kasarapan na ako ng sugal at abalang abala na sa kaka antay ng haring kopas at haring bastos. Naiisip ko na rin ang limpak-limpak na salaping katumbas ng pakikipagsapalarang ito. “Pag jackpot ako bibili ako ng Chicken Joy. Nom nom nom!” sarap na sarap na bulong ko sa sarili ko at atat na atat na sa panalo.

Sa di kalayuan napansin ko ang tiyahin ko na parang kinakawayan ako na lapitan ko daw sya. Naku naman si Aling Pining talagang balak pa talagang sirain ang diskarte ko kaya dedmadela lang ako sa tawag nya. Bahala sya sa buhay nya basta ako “I have a feeling that tonights gonna be a good night talaga!” Nung hindi ko na pinapansin yung tiyahin ko, meron namang kalabit ng kalabit sa akin. Ano ba naman ito? Ang dami namang asungot at balak pa atang agawin ang araw ng pagyaman ko.

Nagulat ako nang hindi ko pinansin yung kumakalabit sa akin ay biglang nagkagulo ang saklaan at napansin ko may posas na ang kamay ko. Waaaaah! Nagka hulihan! Malas! Hindi na ako maka alpas sa pulis na sya palang kumakalabit sa akin kanina pa. Ngayon ko lang din napagtanto kung bakit pala tinatawag ako ng tiyahin ko. Gusto nya pala akong isalba sa tiyak na kapahamakan. Anak ng tinapay naman!

Bantayan Island

If you are planning to visit Bantayan Island of Cebu, another beautiful place on earth not yet spoiled by commercialism, then this entry deserves your attention. If you are from Metro Manila on a red-eye flight but of course not literally as you might be offloaded due to medical condition, upon arrival at the Queen City of the South you can take a friendly cab going to the North Bus Terminal with approximately 100-150php metered taxi bill if you are lucky to have a God-fearing taxi driver. The public transport leaves at around 0200hrs for Hagnaya Port and will cost you 170-230php. The trip is about 3 to 4 hours long and I suggest that you catch some power naps to better save energy before you arrive at your final destination – Bantayan Island.

The boat trip from Hagnaya to Bantayan island is about one and a half hours depending on the season because the trip could last more than 3 hours if the weather is blowing more wind to the sea and even if the trip lasts longer the price remains at 150php per passenger. It’s a bonus but not a convenience for a short trip but we have no other means to control the weather, not even if post “peace” on Facebook.

Please take note of the following reminders:

1. It is advised to bring beauty bars, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, Sunblock, and other look-enhancing kits with less jewelry as you are not going to an Oscar Awards.

2. Tuck in the budget allocation approved by your treasury department and store smaller bills to make all payment transactions quick and easy. Remember there is only one ATM (Allied Bank) on the island and you don’t want to read an OFFLINE sign and be an instant beggar. Coin purse will also help you in this endeavor.

3. During the off-peak season it is best that you scout for the cheapest accommodation once you arrive on the island, however, if you are coming in for the Holy Week, don’t hesitate to book your resort the earliest possible time or you will end up dreaming about this trip.

4. There are pharmacies on the island but sometimes they don’t have it all, so you better load up your pillbox and keep them safe and handy.

5. Bottled water and energy drinks can be purchased on the island so keep them out of the worry list.

6. There are many restaurants, eatery, and barbeque stalls or if your accommodation allows you to cook then you can make a short trip to the market.

7. Telecom signal is good and credits can be purchased at convenience stores.

Here are some tips for good trips that you have in mind, although I would still suggest that you visit the embassy of the country you are flying into for more related and accurate required documents. Most of the countries in the Asia Pacific region do not require a visa you only have to present a valid passport that is at least more than six months valid. These countries that we are talking about can be verified through http://www.asean.org/74.htm and you can also check on the latest press release of the organization that has been established last August 8, 1967, in Bangkok, Thailand. Our country is among the founding fathers of this organization.

If you are traveling into Singapore, most of the time the immigration officer expects a less than 14 days ticket and presentation of valid supporting documents on your reason of stay. Remember that Singapore is a high-end destination and the cost of living is very high compared to other destinations in Asia. However, Singapore proves to be one of the favorite destinations because it offers a lot of attractions other than shopping for signature products.

Another common serious mistake that our government employees commit – they present themselves at the immigration check-point without their travel clearance. Please if you are working as a government employee, secure this very important document so you will avoid being barred from taking your flight.

How does one define fear?

It could be something that you do not want to experience because the thought of it sends you to unimaginable thoughts of dying or excruciating pain that could haunt you for the rest of your life. It can be anything in this world as long as there is the feeling of doubt and uncomfortable that risking yourself will make you regret that it happened.

I will conquer every fear that I know I can manage that will make me a better person in the end. There is a fighter within me that says that fear is only a part of the thrill and the rest is in the books I have yet to discover.

After the birth of my beloved son, we headed to Agas-Agas, which is part of Southern Leyte to experience the zip line that crosses over one of the tallest bridges in Asia that is enough to send you to hell for about 45 seconds of hanging on a God-knows-safe harness that will take you to the other side of the bridge. While I was observing whatever fate I deserve on what I am about to take, I was looking for valid reasons why should I do it.

There were a handful of wannabe daredevils that took the flight without any signed waiver or some sort of reminder that this activity could lead to serious fatality. I have been thinking about what it would be like if I suddenly fell from the zip line or a sudden massive earthquake happens where both endpoints were extracted while I was having my sort glory flight. Dead meat!

Even if have the craziest thoughts of dying I bought the ticket, signed on the logbook that I purchased a ticket to Afghanistan then waited for my turn to be pushed and face the fear of heights. Something weird came up to my mind while I was in the middle of the zip line I remember that I have to scream because I just want to scream. There was no perfect reason why I have to scream and it's weird, right? Perhaps it helps the people from the starting point recognize that I did not faint or I was having the time of my life. Yes indeed!

While today as I am punching keys to make this blog entry, my problem is my complexion because of the long road trip and the sun was smiling the whole day, I am back to being a walking shadow. I have to go back to step one to make my skin lighter. Haist! Prayer cream every night again.

Fear is only in your mind. If you will not conquer it, you will never get the chance to say that “I did it!” or “at least I tried”. Conquer your fear one step at a time and it will give you good memories that you can cherish as you grow old while waiting for the sun to come down as you sip another good cup of coffee after writing a fresh adventure of your life.

Coaching

It was been a very busy month of June for me as there were lots of reports to finish, not to mention the coaching session with your team members so that they may be able to achieve a better performance every month.

Coaching is one way of checking the climate of your team while it makes you feel comfortable with one another getting to know new things about life. I sometimes cannot control myself so I forgot that I should not do most of the talking while coaching is perceived to be something like listening to your teammates talking about the realization that helps them achieve the subject.

Honestly, I sometimes ran out of things to discuss because the way they are performing are really better compared to the others. Yet of course there are many others that are not in my team who performs very well that needs to be recognized. I have placed a huge amount of trust that I know they will commit themselves to our agreement and consult me if in any way they find it difficult to deliver what is expected.

Another party is to be celebrated and we are once again busy with the preparation for the group production number. Conceptualizing something that we used to do way back in college days could be stressful somehow. I am trying to find the energy thinking how active I was before during my high school years in the performing arts. I could not forget our version of Miss Saigon and we saw a lot of people who witnessed that supposed to be a short program that eventually was followed by a variety show a month or so after because of the reviews we received not only from our school but from the community. Well, this is another story to tell.

I have one song that is going on and on right now that I wanted to make some dance routine that we can present at our mid-year party. I am excited about this one but trust me, I don’t have one clear dance step but I have a good understanding of what it is going to be if it becomes a production number. As of now, I was presented with a couple of music that the team is considering and some futuristic ensembles to match with the rhythm.

RH Bill - Stand and Be Counted

When God created the world, everything was planned from the first day up to the present. There are many divine interventions that are secretly manifesting on all the things that are created in the present. Man always seeks the guidance of a larger and powerful being. The Vatican has been making studies and looking closely at all the things that are presented to the church. They know that the challenge is a constant factor in all doctrines and faith. This is a very sensitive topic that I have chosen to write and for whatever sake, this is my stand on the RH Bill.

If you look everywhere, there are millions of people dying because of malnourishment. There is another share of people living without proper education and health care. From what I see as a whole, there is much demand and the supply cannot provide. It was like the sinking of the Titanic, there were more passengers and not enough life rafts to save them.

I am wondering why the birds in the sky aren’t gaining more population, rather they are becoming extinct. What could be the reason? They might have started their own RH Bill long before we could draft one for us. Most of their habitat has been turned into subdivisions, commercial spaces, and most of them were driven or have died. We are re-claiming bodies of water to provide more promising establishments and housing for the future. Imagine how many species living underwater have been devastated by our civilization. “Hindi naman masama ang pag-unlad, kung hindi nakakasira sa kalikasan.”

Some people are not giving RH Bill the chance to change the world. Let us look at what life will be like in the future if we have this bill. There will be fewer malnourished people, crowded public hospitals, and education will improve. We are creating issues upon issues, thus making them popular for the next election. Everything happens for a reason and RH Bill might be one of them. Let us not go back to the era wherein people were killed because they were pronounced as heretics. This is not an issue about the past however this is a serious issue to alleviate the life of our children in the future.

“Nasa Dyos and awa, nasa tao ang gawa.” This one makes me reflect that the future of mankind depends on our actions and God will do the rest. Let us open our minds to the possibility of giving our future land to toil, a place to rest and praise a GOD with unconditional love for everyone.

Managing Difficult Customer 1

We sometimes lost our wits to a ranting customer because she encountered a series of complicated procedure that she does not understand. She is having this conversation with you because she would like to know what to do next, not to mention that there is an amount involved in the transaction. I bet it’s a very long discussion before you could finally say something to pacify an irritated customer.

There is no need to be in a hurry to make a comment even if you have already figured out the resolution. Interruptions will not make her rest to satisfaction of customer service. Let the customer finish her side of the story and assure her that you are there listening with you saying “uhuh or okay”. It does not necessarily mean that you agree and her side of the story is indeed true. This part of customer service requires you to listen intently to the customer after all it is the reason why you are there, because you are equipped with the right trainings and workshop to attend to every customer’s need. Never rush yourself to make a statement because it will not impress an inconvenient customer.

Calbayog Trainees

Once you have all the details of her concern sorted in chronological order, identify the emotion that you need to address. If there are vague statements, it is always proper to re-phrase or be honest that you were not able to catch-up. Then you may try to figure out what could be the best resolution? Where is it coming from and analyze the possible resolution. Start with an apologetic tone and apologize if it is deemed necessary. Don’t get excited to tell your customer that you have the resolution to her concern as your opening statement.

The key to understanding our customers need is by acknowledging the exact emotions, because whether we like it or not, even if we mean business, our customers have feelings similar to us. There is no supply if there is no demand.

There are customers who are quite difficult to manage. They will curse you or sometimes take it personally – below the belt. Managing your emotion is not a simple skill in customer service. It would take a lot of concentration to make you stay focus on the subject matter. Never bite a barking dog, it will harm your integrity and professionalism. Good customer service officer listens carefully, empathize, places the verb statement properly and move-on.

What if the customer is very difficult to manage? What if she never stops from speaking at the top of her lungs? What if they are threatening you? That would be our next topic. Remember always to treat your customers the way you want to be treated.

Let me share to you the best of my hometown – Abuyog. Perhaps we have already proven the talent in street dancing and our colorful Buyogan Festival. Now it’s time for you to know where the crib of the buzzy bees.

If you are flying in from Manila, you can take the first available flight to Tacloban. There are many flights servicing this route, for example Cebu Pacific Air. They have the most number of flights and lowest year-round fares. Then, upon arriving, you can take the public jeepney service going to downtown or avail the unique taxi of Leyte. Though I have not tried it myself, but it looks cozy and the fare might not be that expensive.

Arriving at the new bus terminal you have a choice if you will take the van (some of which are not air conditioned) or the bus servicing the Tacloban to Abuyog route. There is a slight difference but if you are the type of rush and go, then go for the van, otherwise if you would like to enjoy the trip and the scenery, the bus is for you. Of course there many things you can see along the way. The mountainside roads, the provincial life and how laidback it is but really loving it sometimes, then there is the Marcos Mansion in Olot, Tolosa. Just enjoy the view at no extra cost.

When you arrive in Abuyog, if you are traveling here for the first time, you can check some accommodations like, The Florina Country Lodge and Abuyog Hotel. However, if you are joining a family, relative or a friend, that is better. The food is very cheap and delicious, especially the moron. You will simply look for more once you tasted it.

Going around the town is very easy because there is “motorpot” (read: motorized pedicab) that can take you anywhere within the poblacion. There are places wherein you can chill with your friends. Bars like Judge Bar if you are into displaying your singing act and they accept short orders like pancit, fried chicken and lomi. While just beside the park across the municipal hall, you can find Plan B. It is a simple place to chill while listening to amateur singers takes the stage to drive bad spirits away.

I love mornings by the beach in Abuyog, the black sand that glistens to the ray of the rising sun while early fishermen pulls the net out of the sea to bring the finest catch into the market. You can either soak your foot as you watch the rising sun or jog along the beach. These are just few of the things I love to do when I am in Abuyog. While after having an early appointment at the beach, you can also try the cold springs of Bagalongon on the next day. The water is really cold and will give you the best feeling during summer time.

Abuyog has many barangays that almost each one of them celebrates their own fiesta, especially on the month of May. We are talking about a generous banquet prepared for the family, relatives, friends and friends of friends. This is the warm hospitality of Abuyognons that I take pride of. Not to mention the disco almost every night with the “curacha” numbers as the main attraction. This is a tradition that despite of major financial drought declared here and abroad, we can still throw some presidents and heroes in the dance floor.

I always believe that Abuyog is one of the most promising towns in Leyte when it comes to economy and technology. It is regarded as one of the first class municipality in the province of Leyte. Anyway this is my blog, so I have the bragging rights to say that there are now two colleges, two private high schools, banking facilities, competitive business establishments, resort, hotel, lodging house, telecommunications and a lot more. It might not have the qualities of a premium destination like Boracay and Puerto Princessa. The thought of visiting a town with hospitable people and be surrounded with warm welcoming people, I think that makes a vacation more special. If I were you, come and visit Abuyog!

Happy Independence Day!

We are celebrating our Independence Day today and it brings me to my “Sibika at Kultura” days in Bernardo V. Closa Elementary School. It was quite inspiring how our teacher relives the story of our heroes that fought the battle to achieve independence from the Spaniards, Japanese, and Americans. It was the years of molding us to become better citizens of the Republic of the Philippines. I believe politicians should have the same spirit as our heroes who won the battle for independence. This is just a thought, no pun intended.

I do not put a general term that everyone who works for the government has the same attitude in accommodating their customers. I have my own experience while getting a drivers license, updating my tax code and Philhealth forms. Most of them were not as pleasant and I know some of my readers can relate. There is no greeting when you approach the counter, there is no hint of non-verbal nods and there is no eye contact.

Eye contact makes your customer feel that you are listening or eager to help on their concern. It makes them feel that you are paying attention because no customer would want to repeat his concern over and over again. This gives them the impression that you are a lousy customer service officer. By the way, even if you are a license processor or document processor, and you are interfacing with customers - the bottom line of your job description is “customer service”.

We are known for our Filipino hospitality and the courtesy that cannot be matched. As soon as you stepped-in a government office, you expect a long queue of waiting customers, some are irritated because the office looks like no improvement since the Japanese era, tellers are already having a bad day as if they are not properly ventilated and the line seems like moving one hour per customer like they are still using the typewriter. Thanks God! Our government offices were not tourist spots, because we would be known for what we should be known for.

Another sad thing is, when it is already your turn, you get the unpleasant face of the teller as if he regrets being there on that counter. Here is a piece of advice for you. If you feel that you are not happy in your job, you can always tender a resignation and stop the Calvary hill drama of your life. You could not find a single justification that you have to vent your vexation towards the people who are waiting to be served. After all, if it weren’t from the taxes collected from the same people, you will not receive your (sometimes late) salary.

This is not a joke. Customer service is not an easy job. Serious organizations send their employees to trainings and workshops because this is the core of their existence. A generous budget allocation is poured into programs like this because they know that empowering their employees will give them a better return.

I am wondering what happened to the Civil Service Commission campaign on the same topic. http://excell.csc.gov.ph/cscweb/MMOUweb.html It was the best drive that the government initiated and should have been financed well. What if they come out with something like, the most number of complaints will not have salary incentive and a monthly evaluation on their performance. They need to put some metrics because the people deserve the right treatment and not the glare, smirk or irritation.

We have a very few government employees who are very accommodating and true to their calling. If not, some of them dwells on the “fixer type”, while the others work on the extra amount from the customer. Really sad that up to now, we still have them in their post and most likely some of them are excited to celebrate Independence Day or receive retirement package. I am wondering what are the memories he will have when he step down from that post. Most likely, he will miss the days of acquiring wrinkles.

If you feel that you are no longer happy with your job, then you must declare your independence day. You cannot forever treat people like that and the sad thing is you might encounter something larger than the person that protects your job.

For all the government employees who greets their fellow citizen at the counter with the warmest smile and gives an efficient service – Mabuhay ka! You are part of the real deal in celebrating Philippine Independence. You exemplify the true Filipino hospitality and KUDOS to all of you.

Philippine Independence is not always the history, the president’s speech and the whole day activity at the Rizal Park. It should also tell us the story after the declaration of our independence, that we are a nation of good people serving our people in the unique Filipino Hospitality.

Life Inside The Formation Center

A typical day starts 5:00 o’clock in the morning where you will hear the porter ringing the bell from all the four corners of the building. Everyone will rush to brush their teeth, wash their face and go directly to the chapel. Welcome to the seminary life!

Another 10 minutes, you are expected at the chapel for the Morning Prayer and next the Holy Mass. You don’t want Father Superior to visit your quarters and wake you up, because that will mean only one thing – you will be the next “porter”. That is the last task that you would want to be assigned. If you are the porter, you are expected to ring the bell every morning and after siesta. That only means that you will be deprived from sleeping in the afternoon because after lunch time you will be receiving guests of the priests or your fellow seminarians. There are exemptions of course, if you have a class, then the Superior will assign someone to cover your duty. Still, I would not want to be on that task because you will have more time reading news paper and all the spirituality books in the library.

Breakfast is served after the Holy Mass and everyone is expected to be at the mess hall. Usually we do not have a heavy breakfast. The mess hall has served us a lot of good foods and great memories. We celebrate our birthdays here, feasts and sometimes heated debates stirred by the seniors who are taking Philosophy. Our Nanay cook is not the best but we love her because she is really sweet to all of us. It is maybe because we missed our very own mother that’s why when we have free time we go to the kitchen and have a nurturing advise from Nanay while she busies herself cooking.

Here in the outside world, we love Fridays very much, you know what I mean. Inside the seminary, Friday can be both stressful and rewarding. The food every Friday is fish and vegetables only. The best thought is, every Friday we visit Elsie Gaches Village across Alabang Town Center. We help the sisters there in feeding our brothers and sisters with Down syndrome after the mass. My first encounter with them was a bit fearful because I do not know if they would be as welcoming as what I have in my mind. I still have a clear recollection of my first encounter; I was really frightened to see a large group of young adults running towards the Seminary Service Van most of them were screaming. I didn’t have the kindest thoughts because my roommates told me a different story about them. I was about to ask Father Superior if it was okay, I would like to stay inside the van. Well, this is part of the calling that you wanted to answer so I said to myself, “I don’t care what happens to me today. I said a lot of prayers already and faith will take me to where I should be.”

When you get the hang of living your life as an aspiring priest or brother, everything will just come into place. God indeed has made a lot of miracles for me inside the seminary. Don’t be too imaginative about it like there were showers of rose petals or Mama Mary appeared while I was cleaning the chapel. There are many miracles that we don’t consider as such because we are expecting too much from God that even sometimes you thought that God is a magician. That is the worst thought you could have about God.

After breakfast we all gather in the kitchen to help wash the dishes, clean the mess hall and dry the plates and utensils. Then after that we have to go to our assigned areas to clean. I was assigned in the library once (I hate inventory), comfort room, garden near the Grotto plus the love birds “propagation” (they were not reproducing anymore) and the chapel. In my three years of stay, those were the assignments that I have to attend religiously.

Once the bell rang after the cleaning time, everyone should prepare for school or should be at the library to study our lessons. It is not allowed to talk inside the library and most of the time there is a brother or a priest that will check if everyone has a book to read. We were not allowed to own or even use a mobile phone back then. According to them, it does not represent poverty. Remember the three vows – poverty, chastity and obedience.

Well, it has to come from the bell again so that we will know its lunch time. Then after that is siesta until 3:00 o’clock in the afternoon. Isn’t that the best life on earth? We never worry about our clothes because we have another Nanay who do the laundry and pressing for us. That is why it is very important to label your shirts and pants to help her organize it in the shelves where we pick-up the “finished product.”

Inside the seminary is not always about prayers, studying and eating. We have our own sports or recreational activities. I tried once playing basketball, but I guess I am not meant to play that game after seeing one player accidentally bitten by the opponent. That was gross and I wonder how it happened. Now I don’t ask why basketball players don’t smile while playing. The game that sometimes caused a rift amongst us was volleyball. It was all because of a Coca Cola bet or Silver Swan. But of course we kept it a secret as betting can be a serious offense inside the seminary.

During my first year inside the seminary, it was really hard coping with homesickness. I found a way to the rooftop and usually I would go there alone (sorry father) and think about my family in the province. Sometimes if I have a problem or questioning myself why I am still inside the seminary, the rooftop will be my place of refuge.

After the Angelus, we say the rosary and after that we have a period of meditation or if it’s Thursday or Sunday – Adoration before the Blessed Sacrament. Usually we play the “Lauds” - very nice background especially if you are contemplating on certain spirituality. Music really helps a lot in achieving the right mood.

Dinner is served and the mess hall is once again noisy as it can be. We are allowed to talk during these times and joke around with our fellow seminarians. You should not be too sensitive because I have seen a lot of seminarians who were very sensitive left for good. Everyone can be as stupid as they can be and sometimes feel that they have a talent in singing that they would present themselves as experts every Saturday and Sunday afternoon for the choir practice. Please avoid playing around with the musical instruments because once the Superior caught you. You are obliged to play the organ on Sunday mass. That is why most of us had a crash course in playing the piano.

Before lights off, we say the final prayer of the day – Night Prayer. This is where the critical seminarians say their last words before leaving the seminary. If you happen to hear someone planning to leave the seminary, usually he will volunteer to read the verse at the podium. It is good as goodbye already. I have seen lots of exit speech on that podium where I was not able to say mine.

Seminary life has made me realize many things in life. It must be the greatest teacher for me. Even if I was not able to profess my vow, what matters now is that by heart, the Congregation of the Sons of the Immaculate Conception has made me a better person. I have my share of falling short but I was able to accept my fault and strengthen my weaknesses in life. I am very much grateful for the years I spent inside the congregation for you have renewed me physically and spiritually. Molto bene grazie Blessed Luigi Maria Monti.
