Dashing through 200hrs or so of Bioware's Anthem (now in 8K HDR uploading to youtube) over the last 13 days of its existence with one thought in my mind.

Everything digital has an incept date and must die, like Dick's Replicants, live service always online games are no exception.

Though EA and Bioware to their credit gave us 6 month's notice, most of us forgot, well I did then recalled with 13 days to go ...

There have been epic game shutdowns before especially MMOs, I was there for Matrix Online and Star Wars Galaxies going down. The latter at least could see players gathering in instances en masse. 100s of players voices suddenly silenced ... meh

Technically I've played Anthem since its alpha and Betas before the 2019 launch. In Oculus and other VR headsets, because in 2019 VR wasn't dead yet. But I stopped never thinking on the fact all live service games die. Even Steam will one day.

As I was mad dashing through Bastion again trying to youtube every pixel of it a sale popped up for a Warhammer live service game ... dirt cheap and for the first time I chose not to add to my Steam horde of games ...

why because of the Anthem experience, like Anthem that game was a live service game now 7 years into its existence. And it occurred to me there was no point it would be gone soon too.

then Covid hit and development on expanding the promise of Anthem ended with the lead having left and the devs sent to FIFA duty

Anthem as a result never had an endgame of note ... one could argue it suffered a cataclysm ... in a forest ... few saw

sans any real content update the devs were left to introduce cheap grinding challenges. And never expanded the story arcs past the very interesting final cut scene.

However the game itself still had the most unique mech suit flight mechanics, control and combat and looked magnificent to this day

and ironically Bioware announcing its sunsetting sent many of us back to Bastion to finally finish the game

Which I did in a mad dash over 13 days

Which will take the best part of a month to upload/annotate/describe chronologically to Youtube.

Here is my Anthem play from the 2019 Beta played in1080p 3D PC to PSVR VR with Zeiss head tracking to the final 13 days of its existence in 8K HDR (VR being dead as always)

Managed to level up the 4 Javelins to legendary and help out a few players level up too.

We few we happy few

Games need to have an offline option if we are to preserve them, it is completely unreasonable to expect publishers to maintain servers indefinitely and it is a great loss to see so much hard work and labour deleted, future generations cannot experience or learn from.

Also sucks for AI firms hoping to scrape data from these games!

Ultimately everything digital dies, we may extend game preservation a few 1000 years by carving their listings into stone like ancient Sumerians

But they will still need servers to be paid for in the future too ...

is there any point to playing MMOs, or Apex Legends, Fortnite, COD, Hell Divers 2 or Arc Raiders.. or that Warhammer game ...

none of these games will exist in 7 years

maybe we don't care maybe we like that famous Nexus 7 Replicant Roy Batty ... except our fait

in the end it was always just digital tears destined to be washed away in the rain

4. Limited risk

Limited risk AI systems should comply with minimal transparency requirements that would allow users to make informed decisions. But each has STATISTICALLY SIGNIFICANT sfx due to the the hardware and software #AR & #VR IATROGENESIS. And when we scale to millions and then billions (if ever) we see these harmful effects on massive scale and no content creating OMGVRBOYOMG is going to be able poo poo on his Meta promoted ( because that's how that relationship works) tiktok.

And the resultant litigation, anti Metaverse / regulation policies of governments, organizations and individuals will swamp any latterday Metaverse AR VR PT Barnam / L Bob Rife.

If we put all this together the constant need for this Metaverse industry to tag it's application to every human and AI act in future (which it has been doing for 40 years and through several reincarnations), where ridiculous estimates like 17.1 trillion $ come from (in the absence of hardware and software that passes the Elon Musk Tolerance Test), the boosting by VC of 🦄 that turn out to be 🐋 that eventually turn out to be rotten candy stuffed Piñatas, smashed to pieces with talent escaping to follow other interests... like AGI Quantum Computing Solving the Climate Crisis or Weapons of Mass Distraction Companies to fleece paranoid andor xenophobic MAGA tax payers

And then as VR and AR are applied in real world environments from medical investigation, education, diagnosis to commercial enterprise...

The danger is the troubles that lie ahead are exponentially greater than just one company FUBAR. Set aside the Theranos fraud thing, for now ... because that will potentially come later too

As we move from million to 10s of millions and 100s of millions of users. To the fabled one billion should humanity survive &or avert nuclear Armageddon, climategeddon or indeed Mark Zuckerberg's Meta Metaverse

I wrote about this around 2012, last when the resurgence of #VR was kicking off.

Consider all the claims for VR and AR hardware and software we have no clue as to the clinical side effects of acute or chronic.

Neither do #EFFUXRs who flit from funding to funding with whatever HMD tech there is tagging it to beneficial effects

Yet every article points to benefits of #VR #AR #XR the #Metaverse .... every article written by who? referencing studies and charts funded by who? Zuck who tagged the Metaverse 30 years after it was a stale niche white male sci-fi author construct to drive a story about a half black half Korean Pizza delivering / gangster hacker and his relationship with a 15 year old assassin (90s Cyberpunk cliche and paranoia of demographic change fuelled by the the rise of Asian tigers in the 80s and 90s we also see in Philip K Dicks 2019 LA streets)

It's the same pattern

Theranos forgetting the dishonesty at it's core, the deceit and conceit of it is only one app gone wrong. And it wasn't just an app or tech gone wrong

It's results were predictable

It's doom was too.

Today's Meta Quest 2 an Qualcomm XR2 headset has nothing to do with the old Kickstarter Reddit group Zuck bamboozled himself into acquiring then predictably killing

Pichai and Google blowing $6 billion down the drain on Rony Abovitz's Magic Leap ( well Leap Con was nice)

and again Zuck bleeding $10 billion a year, having wiped $300 billion in one day from his rebrand of facebook reality staff as metamates (seriously)

Each headset or tech or application having predictable limitations, failure to deliver beyond payed for studies ( hey the cigarette industry and fossil fuel industry used to do the same... one told you the data suggested smoking cured cancer and the other told you global warming was a hoax.... go figure ...)

Critical errors cascade in systems which do not tolerate critical feedback

The companies above DO NOT TAKE CRITICAL FEEDBACK

not even from Congressional hearings, not even when they know what they are allowing on their platforms is hate, fake or harmful to the health of the billions of users they have a duty of care to.

These are the companies health ministers and services, the entire medical profession and patient population of the planet are going to trust with their medical data, treatment and well being?

So we are on a road mined with arrogance of prescience, we've been on before in the 90s.

The difference is any iatrogenesis caused by headsets in those time was hidden or tempered by the small no. of the them if any which made it to clinical or military or enterprise application.

And in any case the data and the statistics on such a small scale could be argued as being insignificant and unsubstantial

The adrenaline rush of "see one do one", the first baby you deliver, the conversations and observations of an entire patient ward and the progress of disease and treatment over time. #VR #AR #XR or whatever are not necessary for. One of the character building strengths of a medical degree is observing expecting dealing with faliure or your just creating a bunch of soulless video game simulation players. YES #Meta will throw billions at those who tag words like Oxford and Harvard and Medical together. But Medicine is about being in real world situations building professional relationships with real colleagues and real patients. Setting aside the fact you'll STILL fail to take your first arterial blood gas however many hours you have no risk of failing in a VR or AR simulation.

I've probably thought about this over 30 years now including 10 around medical education. There are of course many more practical reasons why Meta Quest 2 or HoloLens 2 are wholly unsuitable to train the doctors of tomorrow not to mention the key Achilles heal of the Metaverse and augmented reality: that it is superfluous to a task and just another way to earn $ for Meta and Microsoft. Are there applications? Yes. But boastful blanket benefits of VR education over existing and ever evolving methods, nonsense like this will be rejected by the medical profession en masse just like it was in the 90s.

yeah I could literally write a series of books on this .... now that could be worth trillions to meta ...

OMG RIP Ian Hetherington absolute legend. Founding member of Imagine Software and Pysgnosis. I can't emphasise enough how inspirational people like him were and how instrumental they were moving computing our of University and Evil Corp Mainframe Learnning Cobol and Fortran from yellow shirted brown corduroy bearded boffins on open University eras into kickstarting the bedroom coder homecomputing era, we were all made to feel part of ... before the Internet

Imagine were like the The Beatles / Frankie Goes To Hollywood😉 of game dev, every game evolving things y'all take for granted. Imagine are the legends Black Mirror Bandersnatch immortalised decades later.

They broke the mold and the 4th wall with games like Frankie Goes To Hollywood many of the UI and Windows devices /portals in that psychedelic game which really could have been based on the Beatles Help/Yellow Submarine era show up in Android, ioS, Mac OS and Microsoft Windows not to to mention holographic and VR Metafarce UI and OS's today. Game dev really is that significant.

Ian Hetherington and Co's impact far out does the likes of lesser one trick rock star ponies like my dear friend John Carmack who were locked to one platform (game) with zero parallax.

Whilst Hetherington's Pysgnosis together with Commodore astounded us with Shadow of the Beast 13 layers of parallax and a very cool long term collaboration with artist 🇬🇧 Roger Dean . Oh YES!

Buying a Psygnosis game always meant the best box art, in game graphics and ... soundtrack

Psygnosis were instrumental in helping Sony PlayStation breaking the saccharine Nintendo dominated cute game NES, SNES Sega console dominated 80s era by which time Mario was more recognisable to 🇺🇲 kids than Mickey Mouse

PlayStation have the wisdom to allow Psygnosis to bring gaming out of the saccharine rabbit hole it was stuck in of cutesy sprites and arcade conversions and moving it beyond that core gamer clique

Wipeout was not only notable for pushing polygons and transparencies Carmack couldn't on a 3 K PC at the time

It made consoles cool : again showing the Psygnosis nous for grabbing the zeitgeist

Again combining code + graphic & music artists in a way that made rival console gaming and PC gaming look childish

Bringing graphic design : Designer's Republic

And real music tracks that took PlayStation into the clubbing generation that wouldn't have touched gaming before

Oh Carmack had Trent Reznor riffing on Quake by this time ... but meh...

The combination of art code / music /graphic design didn't always come off ... but the ambition paid off

Sony's acquisition and letting Psygnosis mostly be Psygnosis was instrumental in PlayStation One's dominance in Europe

That everyone who actually is anyone in these now 50 year old fields knows we have to move beyond like Zuck is desperate to hiring 10,000 Metaverse (his metaverse) engineers...in Europe (and good luck with that Sir Nick Clegg, I think the average Cambridge college produces 6 a year and none of note since Sir Isaac Newton, don't get me started on Nazi era engineers of note, most of them being taken by America or Russia)

But any way back to the Death Stranding Launch Event which was sharing Camden's Stables with Mexican Day Of the Dead celebration which I ended up VR filming instead here after I'd been cleared for not being a terrorist by some American tourists (off duty military pissing themselves as many tourists do at the diversity staring them in their face in London)

No locals Londoners and by that I mean the entire diversity of Londoners you'll find in Camden on any given day made this assumption and the stall holders were happy to be filmed ...

In fact the stall holders who are from all over the world actually didn't employ any of the gatekeeping or computer says no techniques displayed by the PlayStation UK staff. At the same venue. And they deal with 10s of 1000s of people a day.

And it's not the first time an American tourist or professional in the games industry has : Here's Tim Schafer joking about my Vuze 360 being a bomb... at EGX Rezzed 2018. I've met Tim a few times over the years from E3 to EGX ... and the Doublefine gang.

I got to Camden at 6 am getting up at 3 am, queued in the rain tweeted Kojima San we were getting soaked

It was the bad 🇬🇧 kind the kind that soaked people in near freezing temps

Kojima came out in a nice Moncler type no. and dashed by taking pictures I could barely lift my phone by this point and got his back as he walked by as we see in this tiktok

We queued in the rain for 4 or 6 hours and then had 1 hour to dry out in another queue thankfully inside where I set up my Vuze and gimbal, the operation of which looked so Metal Gear the official camera types asked to film me using it. Whilst drying we were repeatedly told we could film the experience (but not the photo session with Kojima, as there would be an official photographer for that)

This the antechamber of the Death Stranding World Strand Tour experience in Camden don a VR HMD and join us in 4K 360 3D :

But I was about to go in to capture in 360 3D 4K video the Death Stranding World tour experience (basically standing in the white Kubrik 2001 style entrance of Kojima's Tokyo HQ for 3 minutes before being spooked by
💀 wearing actors whilst we we ushered through what looked like the set for Miss Saigon...before exiting through the gift shop which was the main reason for the whole thing with fans being encouraged to tick items off a list they intended to buy in the hour long wait in the antechamber (yeah it wasn't an act of kindness for us to dry off after all)

So I put my metal gear down in a corner and had my photo taken ... so bad by the pro photographer it can only have been an in joke between him and Kojima to cope with the boredom of taking 15,000 or so of them in a day ...can you really blame them? The photo would actually be developed and pop out of a machine in physical form in the gift shop

Then it was time to go into the experience ... but for the first time in 2 years the camera wouldn't start and it would take a minute to reset and I was shouted at to go through by a skin head white male security type or GET IN OR GET OUT

He would not allow me to go through with the next group ... nor would the white male an female PlayStation staff

All within ear shot of Kojima and his PR guy I'd just thanked for teaching us Japanese on twitter

I went through with other photographers and got nothing as the time it took the camera to reset was the entire duration of the experience

Looking up from my now reset camera I found the crowd had propelled me into the gift shop

Capturing none of the experience for the world to share in 4K 3D 360

I went through with an official photographer so we went back into the Miss Saigon part of the exhibit where I managed to get 17 count them 17 seconds of video with my phone after 7 hours of standing in the rain and getting up at 3 am to catch the train down to London

It was at this point the gatekeeping aspect comes into play

I asked the event managers who were PlayStation staff if I could go back an film the experience in 360, all 4 minutes or so of it in the white room.

A girl took my card said she recognised me from EGX 2019 the video above was actually made a day late because the person arranging my demo had told me not to sign up but turn up as press ... when I did the girl now taking my card took umbrage with what he had said and then I had to wait another day for the demo...

Unprofessional...time is limited when you try to capture an entire 3 day event with 360 3D cameras

And they were clearly fighting about who said what and who could do what ... no one has time for

She said she recognised me took my card and took it to her manager, the guy in charge of the event and said computer says no you can't, though I'd just walked back in with the official photographer who was admiring my 360 camera and gimbal set up

Another staffer, nice chap offered to walk me to the guy in charge and he'd be sure to understand... so we did and he took one look at me asked me what I wanted to do and told me no.

I said I'd just spent several hundred £ 7 hours queuing in the freezing rain and been told filming the event in 360 3D would be awesome

For people to experience it in VR HMDs later

He said they had people come from Australia and queue for 12 hours

Classic British gatekeeping

All the PlayStation UK staff were white male or female and let's say it from a certain class

He even told me the only way I could get those 4 minutes was to go back an queue for another 7 hours (when he knew the exhibit ended in 1 hour)

If I'd gone to the event in New York or LA ... I'd have no issue

I also managed to 360 3D film with ambisonic sound the entire E3 2018 Colisseum session too which I really should get round to morphing into AR video sometime

As you can see I travel thousands of miles across the globe to events, working at them to spend thousands of pounds to make this content.

Which annoys some people.

But it is the British gatekeeping system that goes back all the way to the dawn of the computer industry that you should take note of here

1. The bald white male security guard shouting at me to GET IN OR GET OUT NOW
2. The gatekeeping white female PlayStation event manager who "recognised" me from EGX 2019 where I did get my demo despite their messing up who said what to who
3. The white male PlayStation event manager clearly taking the piss telling me to go back an queue for another7 hours when then event was due to end in 1

The way the guy didn't even look at me really just shook his head at another who actually tried to help me

Confirming once the 2 had taken my card to 3 and told him NOT to help me because of her bias towards me at EGX2019 .... because for 5 years I've been THE ONLY EFFING POC PRESS at a 🇬🇧 VR or video gaming event... and that really bucks a trend ...

Oh and the evidence... it's all in 360 VR video so I can literally Atticus Finch style get you to walk in my shoes

Oh and if you're reading this and thinking that's emotional or playing the race card : you're in a racist rabbit hole, get out before the inevitable consequences catch up with you. First and final warning

In Autumn 2013 I was exhibiting console and PC VR in London at Eurogamer 2013 ... the head tracking solution for which I had come up with in 2012 experimenting with voice hand tracking and head tracking as future VR UI but you weren't to know that and Palmer Luckey certainly didn't want you to know that, poo pooing it on the kickstarter thread and myself and an African American's potential contribution to VR / the entire Internet on a private board which wasn't with some racist chap from Texas

It also didn't help that as part of my job description I was not allowed to promote myself...oh I have that in writing ... like Luckey's private apology

So people got to play Halo in 3D on a 80g HMD with head tracking in 2013

As he had done at Insomnia in Telford earlier that year where I'd also exhibited VR after doing so at E3 2013 and making peace allegedly with Palmer Luckey who didn't show me his 1080p prototype but then again I saw no need to show him the 1080p VR prototype in my pocket either... just sign the t shirt buddy

However when I got to the stand at Eurogamer 2013 there wasn't one no where to put 1000s of £ of gear

The event manager wanted Zeiss the people I was there to pay 1000s more to attend these shows and make my life impossible in the process

Adding he'd love to have my job gallivanting around the world puffing cigarettes at shows

No he literally wanted my job and the way to do it was to make me appear incompetent: i.e. fail at the show : beginning with having no Effing stand ...

So I popped into Kensington Muji bought some shelves and then talked the white female Earls Court manageress into letting me use the office to assemble the stand

Whilst he emailed Zeiss to slag me off as a slacker ... to people who knew and worked with me for 2 years by this point... a cunning plan ... like getting Brexit done ...

Finding myself sitting next to an American chap in a flat cap who asked me what I was doing ... showing PC and console VR ... and not Oculus VR I said, VR is cool he said, I told him what was cooler ... mobile stand alone VR ... you see at E3 2013 I'd met the guys behind Tridef3D which we used for some demos of PC VR at that point, as a result I was testing the android version of tridef 3D

And showed him Minecraft VR on my Samsung Galaxy S4 ... which I could not show on the floor due to NDAs

Boy how Samsung messed up latching on to Oculus ...

On which you still can't play Minecraft VR officially on a standalone VR or AR device 8 years later. 🤷🏿‍♂️

Told me well you're ahead of your time.... I get a lot of that said I and gave me his card told me to come over to the States, he'd introduce me to people

He is the single and ONLY reason that I have an accredited press pass to 5 years of EGX and EGX Rezzed events in Britain/ Europe

A career in video games journalism was impossible for any POC in 🇬🇧 in the 70s,80s,90s onwards

So I grew up streets away from people like Jazz Rignal or where Crash and Zzap 64 were written...where he got work experience we POC with brains were funneled into the tough life paths like medicine to continue the tradition of indentured servitude of POC in 🇬🇧 Post Empire ... similarly the reason why I never academically persued computer science despite doing work experience at IBM when I was 16, by which time I had been bed room coding for 6 years ... was there was no path. We were funnelled to do the hard work ...and career advisors would discourage you from taking certain paths not because of academic ability. Condition by the time of leaving med school to do as you are told, go where you are told, oh and 120 hour work shifts are completely normal. Unless one escapes

Back to my other life

When I'm sitting in the press office and the table is full of people in the media from the same street in Bristol and or Brighton, at an event with entirely white male panels on VR and AR also from Bristol and or Brighton, with the event attended by BAFTA so white they had to go black to the future to blackwash their racism which throws awards at white male #EFFUXR s who came up with "VR in a Pub"

Or at another Digital Catapult or VR AR event where the same white male and female now Metaverse Consultants/experts because they're entitled to be more so than the token POC they introduce to maintain THEIR white privilege

I'm reminded of what I told a black Magic Leap developer who was lamenting "why do we even bother coming to these events or putting up with this absolutely not systemic racist totally not inclusive performative allieship token POC tagging for clout list making gatekeeping FFing cancelling privliged entitled to fail upwards because they tag VR AR XR Spatial Computing and now Metaverse artiste +- MAGA +- Brexit rabbit hole dwelling LOL WTF 🧙‍♂️🧙‍♀️ to their twitter handles backed by centuries of systemic prejudice they draw from to maintain their privilige"

As I raised my pint to his I said

It is impossible to convey the experience of the Looking Glass Portrait display but here is an 8K res 2D video. I have other ways to get you closer to the experience coming up. Note this is standalone, no PC connected the volumetric and stereoscopic images /video is stored on the device.
