Once you reach a certain level of purchases on Steam , i.e. you have most of the publisher packs , and games you are interested in , your interest starts to wane , your attention turns elsewhere this year for instance I will be spending more money on Good Old Games 50% sale than on Steam's . This does not mean that the old boys of digital distribution cannot throw up a gem or two , today I have my first purchase , From Dust which coming from legendary game designer Eric Chahi, is a must have.

The Steam folks are aware of the game purchasing ennui that sets in after several years of being a Steam customer and thus of late sales have been accompanied with user interaction events designed to get you moving around the site and interacting with other users. This attempt to socialize Steam use is very necessary as Valve want and need to riff off the social network vibe. However the very nature of downloading up to twenty gigs of a game at a time means Steam is at a great disadvantage, as rival onlive allows you to play near instantly and has social gaming at a level that core gamers who are not your typical Facebook gamer, are comfortable with.With onlive you watch live games and can have people watch, listen, and talk, as well as record your game play and across every internet enabled device you are likely to own.So whilst Ironed rot say no to anyone gifting me every game on Steam, I would rather have every game on onlive why? Over on Steam , Valve have you collecting coal , freebies and doing chores to collect more coal and freebies, as well as the usual cheap daily deals with a countdown ticking away to force your purchase. Ironic then when Steam has you Pavlovian conditioned to complete a purchase in the shortest of times and get your reward , once you complete that purchase it then tells you the servers are too busy and you should come back later , if you luck out and have just purchased 3 or 4 games and downloads are about to start , your 100 meg connection is rendered moot by the Steam server overload caused by the sale , and you find yourself waiting hours for downloads , which you will also have to repeat on each of the machines you own. Now if you have over 300 games on Steam , that is a lot of life wasted downloading .

Recently my desktop raid hdd set up died , taking all my Steam games with it , it will take some time to download them all again on a new hdd , but get this , I did not lose a single onlive game because it is all cloud based and so are all my game saves , and even if my gaming rig is down I can still play on tv , phone , tablet ,laptop etc ...

So what are you waiting for get on to onlive and experience the cloud gaming revolution.

This being the final weekend of sales till the next one, you are probably contemplating the daily Steam sale, contemplating because downloading anything is nigh on impossible during a sale, and once you/ have picked up around 40 gigs of games to download you cannot be bothered any more, then there is the chore of being told what to play and what to achieve in order to receive your daily coal or free gift, which you only qualify for after you present Steam the gift of your money.

Or you could forgo all that and get on the onlive cloud Saints Row the Third is £14.06 for subscribers , and that my friends is just too cheap and convenient to miss out on , considering you can play on your phone tablet mac and continue on your tv after playing on your PC , instantly and as long as our internet providers do not start capping our otherwise unlimited broadband ..

Prince of Persia Sands of time is also dirt cheap at £2.62 for subscribers , that one month sub really can save you a lot of money , which you could always devote to any last minute Steam purchases , not that you are going to have time to download any of them to complete your treasure or coal hunting chores by 2nd Jan... and who would want to games are supposed to be fun not work...

how about Valve rewarding us for games we play when we want to play them ? Having said that I need 2 more pieces of coal to get a freebie prize ...

And a word to onlive and Volition , how about putting Descent and Freespace onlive? As our PCs advance , cloud based services like onlive will become all important to preserve old classics , and as the service is largely platform agnostic it is perfectly suited to this task , you can check out the Fallout series now , and I mean the classic series instantly onlive , will I manage to complete them before my one month sub runs out , we will see....

We love Steam , deals like LA Noire Complete Edition 75% off would be great if we hadn't bought the game on consoles and onlive too , seriously by now yours truly has built up over 300 odd games on Steam , short of buying the odd DLC or crying at the discount on games once bought at full price , or complete download apathy it really does not excite at the level Steam used too , similarly all the cool deals onlive has to offer have been jumped at , and as far as retail , an ocean of deliveries is about to hit my door when this holiday finally ends and post returns to normal .

These are great times if you have money to burn on cheap games , but 2011s finest games sale is none of the above , the sale where I spent most money this year is GOG , with full PC classics and obscurities cheaper than iOS and Android Apps , most of which the retail versions of which if you have them are now collectors items.

So if Planescape Torment , Baldurs Gate, Never Winter , Sanitarium , Freespace , Another World , Realms of The Haunting , Zork , Total Annihilation , Ultima , Fallout , Broken Sword , Wing Commander mean anything to you then you have around 24 hours or so to take advantage of the GOG 50% sale .

Taking a look at Ces 2012 through the lenses of a SiliconMicroDisplay ST1080 HMD ....not!

CES 2012 was frankly the most boring tech show in living memory , showcasing nothing new or innovative , there were tablets with higher res and more cpu cores , televisions with higher res and more cpu cores , there were phantom motherboards for the phantom cpus with more cores , there were legions of gadgets that no one could possibly have checked out in several lifetimes let alone recommended to anyone. A few bewildered looking VIP actors and musicians were roped in to plug their threquels or albums . And the live blogging coverage ,well what can you say? you can see that most tech journos spent more time at the parties than on the floor with their unpaid interns tweeting in lieu of their masters...

You can see why Microsoft wanted this to be their last , the tech revolution has been dominated not by the likes of Apple`s design or technological savvy , but their presentation savvy , those Apple Keynotes delineate and separate Apple launches from the competition . It was after all the late great Steve Jobs that got you to buy your first Apple product , no?

Amidst this tech banality there was one shining hope for me , the arrival of the HMD known as the ST1080 ... Except it didn't arrive , the preorders are still not up , and there is only one youtube video , by SMD themselves all 16s ,with more silence than the Artist and almost as much black and white, none of which shows any one using , or commenting on the experience . Given the voracious nature of the USA blogosphere taking down any tech not from Apple , you`d think the Blogzillas would be tearing into SMD using their virtual column inches ... but they are not , which is worrying . So far the blog coverage of this potentially life changing product has resorted to stock pics and regurgitation which this post follows in the spirit of . One cannot emphasize enough how much this product means to the geeksphere , as with it geeks may finally walk the streets and leave their cellars with portable wearable pc solutions...at least as far as the nearest fiscally challenged downwardly mobile tea leaf... or lamp post.... mine ( if it actually exists) is going to be hooked to my Raspberry Pi (if it exists) ASAP .....

So CES 2012 has come and gone , and frankly is not going to alter the tech landscape at all . We in PC land expect our hardware to upgrade every hour or so , so an annual show to tell us what we already knew with too many products and companies with products that do not stand out , well at least the journos had fun in Vegas ... really are you bothered execs and journos had a bash in Vegas ?

CES is no longer relevant , mashing together thousands of competitors is no longer effective in driving sales , as effective you could argue as a mobile phone convention is in taking on the Apple behemoth . It takes one stand out product to do that , and that needs it`s own launch.

The events that move the tech industry , post (y)our hero Steve Jobs , are brand exclusive launches . Think of the impact that the upcoming Apple Keynote with its iPad 3 announce , and later this year Microsoft`s Windows 8 keynote will have compared to this CES 2012 show.

In this environment the worst thing a small start up could do is try to exhibit amongst thousands of devices at a show like CES , in doing so SMD may have done damage to it`s brand even before launching the ST1080

You do not have to be the biggest fish to succeed , but you have to do something that Mr Jobs and his company , and the Microsoft , Intel , Googles and Face books of this world discovered and that is maintain control of your brand image and message using exclusive launches . Something which is impossible at a show like CES.

Oh it is great for multiproduct companies like Sony and Samsung to introduce concept devices that will not reach the consumer for years , or maybe never ,like 8K tvs , 80 inch 3D OLED tvs , or if you are Lenovo with concept tablets waiting for an OS to arrive in October. None of these companies is expecting to have these on shelf last December and relying on them for survival .

But a start up like SiliconMicroDisplay with one new and innovative product that is already overdue is going to live or die from profits from that one single product and it`s launch.

Had SMD held their own keynote after CES ,maybe after the upcoming Apple keynote, then maybe they would have far better off and showing more than 16s silent videos , and at the very least had an internet connection powerful or stable enough to get their message across .

Still we wait in wonder for the arrival of the ST1080 , but they will have to be quick and deliver on promises or the HMD arena , will be taken by other competitors .

And who cannot fail to cease to be amazed by the silent 16s video of the ST1080 on a shelf .

And is there no one in the 1000s of CES 2012 visitors that managed to pick the thing up use it comment on it or film it ? Just proves my point about CES possibly doing more damage than good to your brand.

Let`s hope the promising SiliconMicroDisplay ST1080 ain`t nothing but a thang that happened in Vegas and stayed in Vegas......

well so I bought a lfe time sub to support the developers and spent 2 years in spacedock ... and then it went free to play .... well the needs of the many out way the needs of the few ... don`t they ?

STO should live longer and prosper thanks to this move and if they can tie in more tv and film content they may just as well call this Star Trek Resurrection and my lifetime sub sacrifice will have been worth it...........

Star Trek Online runs well on every tablet I have tested from the Atom and Ion powered Joojoo , the dual screen Toshiba Libretto and Acer Iconia ( spread across 2 screens no less...) . It also runs mighty fine on my multiscreen desktop at 5120 by 1600 , but only on the i7 powered Lenovo X220 T , do I get : Pen and touch control , together with trackpad , nubbin AND full keyboard ... it is a new way of playing ...

go make it so .......

At this time of year , where we start saving for Ivy Bridge , iPad 3s , Transformer Primes , and 7970`s , i.e. hardware , purchasing software has to be put on hold , so what better than to test your newly switched on 100 meg broadband than to download a free demo , wow , it has been so long since I downloaded a demo for a pc game , but since EA sent me a nice email I think I will give it a try . Although one must resist all software purchases if one is going to save up for ones hardware upgrades .... yeah like that plan is going to work...

The game developed by Big Huge Games of Rise of Nations , and Catan fame , has a nice set of intro videos , and little touches like having Claudia Black doing voice over duty should see EA pull in the geek dollar faster than a MMO Gold mining syndicate... want to test that theory ?
