So I’m sitting in my kitchen at the moment, in the dark, and all I can think about is when my electricity is going to be turned back on. Recently, some complications with the wiring in my house have made it so that my roommates and I are going to be without creature comforts for a few days.

I can’t stand it.

I spent 4 years in the Marine Corps, where living without air conditioning and sleeping in the rain were normal situations you’d find yourself in. Spit out from my comfortable suburban home in Dallas, I learned what it truly meant to survive with absolutely nothing save your strength and discipline. I still remember the day I got out, 4 years later, and signed a lease for my own apartment in Austin; I rolled around on the carpet because I was so happy I had carpet. I was ecstatic about the fact that I had my own room, all to myself, where no one could tell me when to wake up, go to sleep, or take a shower.

Now, here I sit, in a gigantic house, complaining about the fact that my kitchen isn’t at optimal temperature to my liking. I take it beyond complaints as well, figuring out what I’ll say to the property management company when I call them. “Hey, I pay rent here, and I don’t deserve this. My roommates and I want compensation; it’s in the lease that you are to provide us with air conditioning, laundry, and a working refrigerator.” I craft my conversation with them in my mind, carefully bringing out points that I believe would be irrefutable; then it occurred to me: who am I trying to convince?

What is it that I think I deserve?

It amazes me how quickly and efficiently human beings can take things for granted. One minute we strive and overcome massive obstacles to achieve a goal we’ve salivated over for months, and once we obtain it, we simply move along to the next thing that will give us that thrill, or comfort, or satisfying feeling of accomplishment. I remember when I was accepted into UT, and how excited I was to go there and study as hard as I could; now I complain about having to walk all the way to the tower. I have a class in the UT tower; that’s pretty cool by most people’s standards, and I simply don’t care anymore. I have taken it, stuffed it into my pocket, and looked ahead for what’s next.

Why? What is it about human nature that convinces us that we can be satisfied with the next thing? Recently, my pastor Ben was telling me about a financial study where persons of various salaries were asked how much more money they would need to make to truly feel secure in their lives. For lower salary persons, the answer was around 30%. The researchers went up the ladder, to those who made literally thousands more dollars than the others, and the answer continued to be “I think I would need about 30% more to feel financially stable.” It seems that, not only do we constantly crave more, that which we crave does not satiate us.

God tried to tell us this through His Word, and I don’t think any of us listened. Jeremiah 2:13 tells us that we, as human beings, have committed 2 major sins: we have forsaken God (the spring of living water), and worse than that, we have dug our own broken cisterns that cannot hold water. We were born into this world, and stood before God’s living fountain. We couldn’t fully comprehend its majesty and how fully it would quench our thirst for life and love, so we turned around and started looking for materials to make our own little fountains. We created little cisterns (a cistern is another word for a pot, by the way) and wrote “my career” or “my relationship” or “my comfort” on the side, and then set about pouring ourselves into them, thinking that the water we drink from them later would satisfy us. We didn’t realize, however, that as we poured, water leaked out the bottom. So when we went to drink, revel in our own accomplishments, or bask in someone we’ve put all our hope in, we found that the water didn’t quite do it for us.

It’ll never be enough. God told us this.

But no! We must not have done it right. We look at our pot and say, “oh, there must be a leak in the bottom, that’s why it’s not filling me.” So we patch it up with a new girlfriend, a new job, or whatever new life situation we think can hold the water. “This will surely hold the water!” Again, we are shocked when we drink the water and find it not to fill us. Whether it’s an Olympic medal, or an A on the test you just took, it didn’t quite do the trick.’’

Some like to fill the cracks with what science and industry have granted us, and think we can escape our curse. Genesis sheds some light on what our lives are going to be like post-fall: (3:17)- “Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat food from all the days of your life…19 by the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.” Have we progressed beyond this?

Jesus tells us in John 4:10- “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked Him and He would have given you living water.” Jesus says this in response to a Samaritan woman who has tried to fill her life with men. She is currently living with a man, and has another 5 husbands under her belt. Jesus knows the water she’s drinking isn’t doing it for her. Not only that, He goes on to tell His disciples what he eats as well (4:34)- “My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of Him who sent me and to finish His work.” Jesus has to eat and drink like anyone else, but He know that for His heart, He’s got to be on mission for God.

What’s important is not the amount of money in your bank account, not who you’re dating, and certainly not the current state of where you live. Those things can improve, or they can get terrible. But, for the man or woman centered on Christ, it doesn’t matter, because they’re already satisfied in Him. They’re full.

Unsatisfied Satisfaction.What this means here is I try to be both satisfied in Christ (for my desires, longings, and wants) and unsatisfied with sin in the world. I am strong because He fills my desires and wants, so I take can the rest that I find in Him out and apply it to the situations around me, hoping to make this groaning world a little better. Now, I actually live this out for about 6% of my life, because, like everyone else, I fail. I have my little cisterns lying all around my house, and it’s getting really wet around the floor.

It’s just nice to know that His water never runs out, because His fountain never leaks. It’s all there in Him, we have simply to drink.
