Of course, things such as iPods, laptops, flat screen television sets, stereo systems, DVD and Blu-ray players and game consoles are developed to fill our daily needs and entertain us, right? But it tends to be frustrating when you have to reconnect cords and adapters to a wall socket or USB port and recharge or replace batteries to keep these devices working. As a result, you end up spending less time being able to sit down in your favorite chair to enjoy them.

Well, a man named Ryan Klinger apparently also hated this problem, so he came up with a solution. He calls it the Empower rocking chair. This is a flat-pack chair made with tubes and a sling seat that can fold out like a bench-style glider seat. The rocking mechanism in the chair is hooked up to a gearbox, DC generator, voltage controller and lithium battery. These features enable the chair to generate kinetic energy that can be stored and used at a later time. Then the energy is converted to be usable with a DC/AC inverter and USB ports or wall socket outlets can be used to access the stored power.

So, this rocking chair is actually a power generator that creates its own juice to fuel your electronic devices when you sit in it and use the rocking mechanism. Such a new development can certainly provide more convenience by giving you more time to sit down. Thus, you can now enjoy your favorite gadgets longer before having to leave your seat. Unfortunately, current sources do not provide information on a price or release date for the device at this time. However, before buying the chair once it’s available, consumers should be wary that such a chair could lead to less exercise, which may not be a good thing.

Hey there, gamers, some of you have spent time playing music games such as Guitar Hero and Rock Band in the last several years. Of course, these games have been popular because they give you the chance to play along with and listen to many of the classic hits of your favorite musical artists. However, this gaming experience isn’t perfect. Gamers are basically playing through a simulation with large, plastic controllers designed to look like guitars. But this lacks authenticity for playing music during a game.

For those of you who want more realism in your music game experience, Seven45 Studios is ready to grant your wish. This company is a game developer that originated from a professional musical instruments manufacturer called First Act, who specializes in making instruments for newer musicians at the beginner’s level. Today, Seven45 Studios announced their new creation called Power Gig: Rise of the Six String. It is a music game that uses real guitars for gameplay.

Power Gig is very similar to Guitar Hero and Rock Band in terms of musical gaming but the guitar it comes with is the real selling point here. The guitars are made with low-end plywood and plastic to give players the feel of a real instrument. The instruments are compatible for use with X-Box 360 or the PS3. They work by pressing a button, which releases a dampening block from inside the guitar to hold the strings in place. Then the instrument will start the game through use of its fingerboard. The guitars also have quarter-inch instrument jacks so they can be plugged into any guitar amp.

The game itself also provides a strong narrative element, which was inspired by other games like Brutal Legend. Power Gig is set to be released this fall and a microphone and drums are also included with the guitar. The opportunity to use a real guitar in gameplay sounds is very exciting to me. This music game has the potential to be more popular than previous ones but we’ll have to wait until the fall to find out.

The trend of portable technology continues to grow in popularity, causing devices like the cellphone to keep getting smaller. Let’s consider the evolution of the phone in the last few decades. Once, it was just a basic, land-line unit with cords of limited length and then the cordless phone was created. After that, the development of the cellphone came and most units have been about the size of small two-way walkie talkies. Now phones have gotten even smaller.

Take a moment to imagine a cellphone being the size of a portable mirror. That’s what Qiao Sheng has recently developed. They call it the A45. The device comes in a high lacquered finish and has a display which can be rotated through 180 degrees. The phone’s display is a 2.2” mirror-sized touch screen and the device has a user interface. Furthermore, the A45 is also equipped with a camera that uses 3 Megapixels. Unfortunately, there wasn’t information available at this time concerning the price of this new product.

Of course, the creation of this smaller cellphone shouldn’t be surprising since most electronic devices are currently made to attract the consumer not only based on new technological features but also greater accessibility and convenience. Seriously, if you had told me thirty years ago that phones would become the size of a small hand mirror, I wouldn’t have believed you. With Bluetooth headsets currently being made compatible for use with most phones, it may just be a matter of time before hand phones no longer exist. So enjoy your current phone as long as you can. It’s probably still cheaper than the latest stuff out there and the new tech that will come after it.

Technology continues to become more portable, providing convenience and easy access for people on the go. Such examples of this include laptops, cellphones, iPods, netbooks and digital cameras. However, the energy sources for the tech we rely on are usually not so convenient. Batteries have a limited charge, so they eventually have to be recharged or replaced and special power cords and adapters have to be plugged into a stationary wall socket. If energy sources need to become more portable for easy transport, how about a power generator you can carry on your back?

Of course, you may be wondering how this is possible. The answer lies with Bourne Energy’s new development called the Backpack Power Plant or BPP-2. It is a thirty-pound, hydroelectric device that generates fifty watts of energy. That’s the same amount of power you can get from sixty solar panels. The device is about the size of a tall airtank and can be easily carried like a backpack. It can be used in any stream of water deeper than four feet and runs quietly without giving off heat or exhaust.

A version of the BPP exists for the consumer, though it is still just a prototype. It is installed by using two synthetic ropes with lightweight anchors for each rope to hold down both sides of the BPP in a stream. Futhermore, the ropes have to be connected to two trenches, both dug up on opposite sides in the stream. High-tension mooring systems are used in the same way for oil rigs on water. A version of the device was also developed for the military and it can be used in streams of various flow rates. However, the consumer version can be only be used in streams with a flow rate of 7.5 feet per second and the current cost is $3,000.

The Backpack Power Plant is mainly intended for developing countries where it could be used for distant villages and towns and it is set to be released in 2012. I’m very fascinated by Bourne Energy’s new device. After all, it could be very helpful to have a portable generator that can be easily carried by hand. However, with its current price, I wonder how practical it will be for the consumer in the near future.
