An International Meatstick NYE Throwdown: Phish-style

So many of my musical memories and spiritual joys are tied up with the band Phish. You can be as dismissive as you want, or as jaded as you want, that's fine. But the quartet from Vermont has brought me a wealth of enjoyment that few people will ever be able to fully understand. And when all is said and done, and I have met my maker, I know that I will look back on my life and be certain that Phish will be the ones responsible for having laid the path, the groundwork, that would have led my musical journey to where it is on that fateful day. With that being [awkwardly] said, I literally wept in that aforementioned 'enjoyment' while watching the HD footage from their 'NYE stunt' this weekend at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

They opened up their New Year's set (set 3 of the night)a few minutes before midnight with a rendition of Meatstick. If unfamiliar with the Meatstick and it's Japanese-slash-European ode to Vienna Sausages, don't worry. All you need to know is that witnessing a Meatstick is a bit of a treat. Sit back and enjoy the sausage ride.

Absolutely gorgeous? Of Couse. Nothing less would be expected from Joanna Newsom.

This year saw her release her quote-unquote "magnum opus" in February, amidst fervish curiosity about the speculative rumors that the album would be a triple disc affair. Branching out from the Newsom we saw on her 2nd album Ys, 2010's Have One On Me finds the harpist playing on a wider variety of instruments including a little electric guitar and piano. Here's the last track on the 3rd album, an achingly solo piano driven song called 'Does Not Suffice'.

2010 in Review: Ben Folds/Nick Hornby - Levi Johnston's Blues [video]

Ben Folds released my favorite standalone track of 2010 in 'Levi Johnston's Blues', from the Nick Hornby collaboration album, Lonely Avenue. That chorus ['I'm a fucking redneck, I live to hang out with boys...."] and that NASTY echoing drumbeat just eat down to the core of me. And the subject matter, at first listen, may sound like an attack on Mr. Johnston, but on reflection, we realize that Levi isn't the true subject of this song. Levi's just being Levi, Ms. Palin.
