Inner Beauty | Perfect Health Meditation Challenge

Meditation is a powerful, mind-over-matter tool that can help us clear our minds of past struggles, future worries + allow us to focus on living our lives in the present moment. Practicing it on a regular basis allows us to find the calmness that's already there + makes it part of our life.

Research shows that chronic stress is linked to a variety of health issues + diseases, including the Big “C”. However, 2 separate studies on the outcomes of Breast Cancer patients + survivors who practiced meditation, either during, or after treatment while making the transition into their “new normal” showed that both groups had improved emotional, social + spiritual well-being.

The practice of meditation can help us do more than de-stress though. It can also improve immune function, psychological well-being, depression, anxiety, memory-loss, alertness, self-awareness, post-traumatic stress disorder (which affects many Cancer Survivors), fertility + overall quality of life. Meditation is also known to decreases blood cortisol levels (“stress hormones” that promote Cancer cell production), side effects of Cancer treatments, heart rate, blood pressure, cholesterol, chronic pain, muscle tension, insomnia + fatigue.

After learning about the impact meditation could have on my health, I was inspired participate a 21-Day Meditation Challenge last fall, with guru - Deepak Chopra. I had dabbled previously, but felt I like I didn’t really know what to do or how to do it - so I never stuck with it. The 21-Day Challenge was the perfect introduction for a beginner like me who just needed a little guidance. The experience was so life-changing, that I haven’t stopped since!

The next Challenge begins on March 11^th + will be focusing on the topic of “Perfect Health”. DIY Beauty: Steam Facial

Herbal Steam Facials are a Beauty Ritual I swear by! They're super-easy, super-cheap + a great way to get the gunk out of your pores!

What You’ll Need

Large Stainless Steal or Glass Mixing Bowl
Large, Heavy Towel
Timer
4 Cups Water
2-3 Tea Bags, Any Variety
EVOO, Coconut Oil, Jojoba (pick one)
3 Tbsps. Witch Hazel (optional)
Essential Oils (optional)

Tips

Always use the highest quality of fresh, organic ingredients when possible
Look for raw, pure, extra virgin + first cold pressed oils
Add fresh herbs if available – if not, add some dried herbs from your spice rack
Use a less-is-more approach if using strong essential oils like peppermint or eucalyptus, etc.
Most materials + ingredients can be purchased at Mountain Rose Herbs or on Amazon
This is a fab way to use up tea you weren’t crazy about drinking
Set a kitchen timer or use your phone so you don’t have to watch the clock
If it’s too hot, let it cool a bit
Never use plastic, it can leach BPA + other harmful chemicals
Steam may cause frizzy hair!

Instructions

Apply a thin layer of oil onto damp, clean skin
Prepare + steep a pot of hot tea following the instructions on the package
Let it cool for a minute or two so you don’t burn yourself
Add Witch Hazel + Essential Oils to the bowl
Add Tea + Tea Bags to the mixture to combine
Set the timer for 10-15 minutes
Create a Towel Tent over your head while leaning over the bowl, making sure to tuck in all sides
Relax
Wash your face as you normally would
Apply a final, thin layer of oil to seal the new moisture

Follow these easy steps to create your own customized, waterless body moisturizer! A little goes a long way!

What You’ll Need

Double Boiler

Kitchen Stand Mixer

Measuring Cups

Spatula

Spoon

1-2 Glass Storage Jars

Ingredients

1 cup Shea Butter

½ cup Coconut Oil

½ cup Olive, Almond, Jojoba or any healthy oil

About 25-30 drops (Total) Essential Oils, Any Variety

Tips

Always use the highest quality of fresh, organic ingredients when possible.
Most materials + ingredients can be purchased at Mountain Rose Herbs or on Amazon.
Use raw, pure, extra virgin + first cold pressed oils if you can.
Try Scent Combo: Sweet Orange + Vanilla Essential Oils.

Instructions

Melt shea butter + coconut oil in the top of a double boiler.
Remove from heat + let cool for 30 minutes.
Stir in EVOO + essential oils.
Wait until oils start to partially solidify, then whip until a butter-like consistency is achieved.
Store in a clean, glass jar.

Why It’s Good For You

SHEA BUTTER – deeply moisturizing, has healing, anti-inflammatory + antioxidant properties, including Vitamins A + E which fight wrinkles + fine lines. It also protects, strengthens + regenerates skin cells.

COCONUT OIL – loaded with Vitamin E + fatty acids like lauric acid, myristic acid, capric acid + many more which are anti-fungal, anti-oxidizing + anti-bacterial. It’s an antibiotic, multivitamin + nourishing multi-nutrient moisturizer all in one!

OLIVE OIL - one of the most sought after and easily accessible natural oils for skin care, contains linoleic acid - a compound not made by the body that prevents water from evaporating on the skin. This heavy-duty moisturizer is full of antioxidants such as vitamins A + E, polyphenols + phytosterols. These antioxidants help neutralize the free radicals that cause skin damage. What are they?

Parabens are a widely used group of toxic, low-cost, synthetic chemical preservatives + anti-bacterial agents used in the beauty + pharmaceutical industries which can extend the shelf-life of a cosmetic product for up to 10 years.

What are they in?

Everything.

What’s the problem?

May alter hormone levels, possibly increasing risk for certain types of cancer, impaired fertility, or alteration of the development of a fetus or young child; studies have found parabens in breast tumors; probable skin toxicant; animal studies show brain and nervous system effects. Also linked to an estrogenic effect from continued use. It is a medical fact that estrogen stimulates breast cancer + anything absorbed through the skin, may be as high as 10 times the concentration of an oral dose.

Are they necessary?

No. Avoid these beauty-baddies like the plague! While natural counterparts may not preserve products as long, healthier alternatives do exist. To name a few, try products preserved with natural Vitamin E (d-alpha tocopherol), Tea Tree Oil, Rosemary Oil or Grapefruit Seed Extract (depending on the source) instead.

How to avoid them?

Buy “waterless” products; if there’s water in the ingredient list - it needs a preservative. Find carefully curated, clean beauty recommendations without this ingredient here, on The Glamorganic Godddess.

Check out this simple, clean alternative to a popular brand that contains icky ingredients like petrolatum, turpentine oil + camphor. The oils in this remedy are absorbed through the skin to relieve congestion + kill infection while the power of peppermint + eucalyptus essential oils produce a heating sensation that reduces constriction by stimulating blood circulation.

What You Need

Small, airtight storage container
Spoon
Measuring cup

Ingredients

1/8 cup coconut or extra virgin olive oil (EVOO)

10 drops eucalyptus essential oil

10 drops peppermint essential oil

3 drops thyme essential oil

Tips

For a solid balm, use coconut oil

For a liquid rub, use EVOO

Always use the highest quality of fresh, organic ingredient when possible

Most materials + ingredients can be purchased at Mountain Rose Herbs or on Amazon

If coconut oil is solid, bathe the bottle in a warm water bath to liquefy

To increase the warmth of the balm, rub the oil briskly onto the skin

A warm piece of flannel placed on the chest afterward will increase the warming sensation

Rub on chest, throat or temples as necessary

Hey Dolls!

Welcome to a Happy, Healthy + FABULOUS New Year!

As I Celebrate My Life on my 35th Birthday, I find myself reflecting over the past few years... mainly, the few since The Big C crashed my Party.

It's been a Roller Coaster… sometimes from Hell, sometimes not. A lot of times have been good, some have been bad + a few were not very glam, or organic. Many spent (wasted) wondering if I'd even live to see my next Birthday. True story. Read about it here.

There is a silver lining though.

Looking back, I'm totally amazed at the amount of fear + self-doubt I've overcome. I've taken chances, made mistakes + done things I never thought I could do. It's in the past year that I think I've grown the most though. I'm figuring things out as I go + trying to live in the moment + loving every minute of this life I've created! Writing The GG + connecting with so many of you is one of the most rewarding experiences of my life! So, Thank YOU! I'm proud of myself. I'm finally beginning to grow into my authentic-self + find my way in life. Thank. You. God! Lol.

Looking forward, you'll see The GG continue to grow with me - which means change + re-birth. And like you, there's nothing I love more than a spiffy blank canvas to Be-dazzle! So... we'll be going back to the basics + focusing on where to start. Other Cancer Treatment Options

Many of you who follow me know I've searched outside the realm of conventional Cancer therapy since my Breast Cancer diagnosis at 31, in 2009… and it hasn't been easy for me.

After a blur of life-altering decisions, two Surgeries + 33 Radiation Treatments later - my doctors gave me the option for Chemo, handed me a 5 year prescription for Tamoxifen + told me to go back out into the world + find my 'new normal" (whatever that was). I refused both! Clearly, I had no choice in the "new normal"! Either way, it just didn't make logical sense for me to break down my immune system when I needed it most - or to exchange one type of Cancer for two other types in the name of "Treatment" or "Prevention".

Day in + day out at the Cancer Center for 3 months, I witnessed barely conscious, last chance patients arrive on stretchers in a vegetative state for chemo + radiation. Most never came back throughout my time there. What scarred me most though were the people who started Treatment with me, but chose different treatments + were deteriorating so quickly. They seemed sicker from the Treatments than the Cancer. Seeing that, made me sicker than the Cancer + the images in my mind are still as vivid today as they were back in 2009. I remember thinking that I would honestly would rather die than live like that! My feelings still haven't changed.

What infuriated me the most was that after the Hell I had been through, none of my conventional doctors could tell me what caused the Cancer... or how to prevent it from coming back! So, I took it upon myself to do exactly what my doctors had warned me not to do… Google anything about Breast Cancer. Badass, right? While looking into the causes I was surprised to discover that, for the most part, Cancer is a Lifestyle Disease. Only 10% is genetic + mine wasn't.

To be honest, when I first entertained the idea of alternative options, I didn't believe the hype! My thoughts were that if these treatments were soooo effective, why didn't anybody know about them? More importantly, why weren't they being offered to me by my doctors? But, as I started hearing success stories, meeting other Survivors who had walked this path before me + understanding the politics of Cancer, Inc., I was convinced that options outside of drugs, chemotherapy + radiation do in fact exist, work + are used in many other countries around the world!

From that point on, I decided I was going to go the Integrative route - taking advantage of the best of both the Natural + the Conventional Medical worlds. It was so important for me to have a quality of life whether I had one hour, or one lifetime left to live.

The tough part about my Integrative Treatment decision was that I didn't know what to do about it, or where to even start + I'm still learning! Some of these doctors are also really expensive to see - so this is where FREE events like this are more valuable than gold!

When purchasing beauty products online, make sure you compare the advertised ingredients to the ingredient list on the package you've received.

Currently, there is no law stating that companies have to notify consumers when reformulating their products. Manufacturers sometimes have back stock they need to get rid of or new stock they want to roll out before they've had a chance to update their websites.

So… you may actually be getting a completely different product than you thought you were purchasing, even as a conscious consumer.

Sneaky, right?

I don't like that game either.

First + foremost I buy products based on what's in them + what makes them work.

I get that business is business, but ingredients are often a deal-breaker for me. What may be right for the company, may not be right for me… and I want the right to decide… not to feel like a company I trusted pulled a fast one on me.

In my perfect (Glamorganic) world, proper reformulation etiquette would be to: post both the old + the new lists on their site with a love note stating that "you may receive either, or until the last bottle is sold". Then the consumer can make an informed decision based on what's best for them.

The same rules apply when re-purchasing a product you already use + love. Save the empties until you replace them + compare the ingredients before you use them.

You'd be surprised how often I've come across this.

I'm even surprised.

If you're an ingredient snob like I am, contact the company directly... prior to purchasing + request the most current + complete ingredient lists. Ask about their return policy, just in case.

While I absolutely adore RMS Beauty and have recommended their products to many of my readers, I've gotten a few complaints about "snippy" Customer Service when they had questions or weren't crazy about a product. Unfortunately, I've also had my own experience with this as well even though the product I received was free for this review.

So far, this is the best concealer I've found in natural cosmetics yet! Great coverage when you need it but doesn't look caked on! On a daily basis I only use this as a concealer / eye shadow primer due to the price tag, but the RMS website says you can also use it as a foundation, which I sometimes do too. What I love most (besides the ingredients) is that it literally looks like you're not wearing anything! Luckily I was right on the money with the first shade I chose, # 22… often a near impossible task online! Initially, I had a love / hate relationship with the texture of this just as I did with my Vapour Organic Beauty Soft Focus Foundation… which I now am IN LOVE with, BTW! If you didn't like that though, you might not like this. It's almost like a balm that melts from the friction of your fingers and glides well once creamy giving you that nice glowey finish. It tends to be a little greasy especially around my super-sensitive eye area - so I need to set it with powder, otherwise it creeps. I wouldn't recommend this for those with extremely oily, unbalanced skin…. it can feel heavy + greasy at first until you get used to it. My skin is finally starting to feel balanced, so that's why I think it works so well for me. I'm used to using a pot concealer with a brush + sponge from my MAC days, but blending it with nature's applicators is the best way to apply this particular product. I've been using RMS "Un" Cover Up for about 4 months + it's lasted way longer than I actually thought it would, so that's a plus! Despite the price, the ingredients are impeccable, the product blends seamlessly, preforms well and lasts throughout the day or night. I absolutely would purchase this again! Thanks RMS! xo.

I love Hippies, but I don't want to smell one (i.e.. patchouli, tea tree, peppermint, lavender, etc.) so, this is a FAB change from the natural norm. Just opening the jars sends me on an instant vacay in my mind… and to me that's worth every penny! I like all of them + love to mix them, but my two faves are the Royal Pikake + Leilani's Lei Stand. As with any truly natural perfumes, the scent doesn't last forever on your skin (although I wish it did) so one of my favorite ways to use these is to dab some in the palm of my hand + run my fingers through my hair! BTW, all of these are 100% Natural, not sure why the stamps are only in the Chocolate + the Mermaid's Kiss photos. The application is pretty simple, just mix about 1-2 teaspoons of powdered organic facial mask into a paste with a liquid of your choice. On the positive tip, since it's not pre-mixed - you can customize the consistency of it with the fun things like mineral water, herbal tea, fresh squeezed juice, milk, vegan milk, rich yogurt, honey, etc.) and enjoy it fresh mask every time! The downside, that it's not pre-mixed - but I'd rather have to mix it than have preservatives in it… which most wet masks need to be shelf-stable. Only issue was that I had a hard time getting this off when I used only water. Not sure what that's about, works fine when I mix it with anything else… maybe take it off before it's dry? IDK. I play around with the consistency, but I especially heart a warm liquid mask which improves skin's absorbing power (like a mini facial steam). I don't have a regular routine with these, but I use them pretty frequently! These can last awhile depending on how you like your mask. I love all three, but the Chocolate one was my favorite! I mean, who doesn't like a Chocolate Face Mask? Perfect for PMS, Lol. Strawberry's my second fave + I love it with Organic Yogurt… Stawberries n' Cream YUM! I'm not gonna lie, the Mermaid's Cheek smells like Low-Tide at the Jersey Shore to me... so I probably wouldn't buy that one again, I don't think. Don't quote me though - I'm torn because I really love the way it performs… so for now I just mix it with one of the other ones… kinda like I hide Spinach or Kale in my Smoothies ;) Smart Cookie, right? Ask + you shall receive! This is one of my most Frequently Asked Questions… Personally, I only wear sunscreen when I'm going to be in the sun for a prolonged period of time. I do not wear sunscreen daily or under my makeup. Most makeup already has it built in anyway, which I believe is enough protection for the hour or less a day that I'm actually in the sun. Just to be clear, I'm not downplaying Sun protection… I totally think it's a must, but I don't live on a Tropical Island - I live in New Jersey, where it's summer for only a few months a year… therefore, I only slather Sunscreen on when necessary!

Way too often, many of the components in sunblock (natural or not), can contain things that can do much more damage than the than what you're trying to avoid in the first place. When the active ingredients in your Sunscreen are exposed to the sun, they break down + can create Cancer-causing free-radicals on your skin. So use your best judgment, but be easy with it.

Depending on where you live, most of us are really only outside anywhere from a few minutes to an hour a day... getting in + out of the car to go to work, running into + out of a store, picking the kids up from school, etc. Studies show that we actually don't get enough sun to get a healthy dose of Cancer Preventing Vitamin D - 'the Sunshine Vitamin' + Statistics show that Breast Cancer is directly related to Vitamin D Deficiency, so I think it's important not to live like a Vampire fearing the Sun. I respect the Sun instead of worshiping it like I used to when I was younger (and crazier)… Baking, Burning, (Frying?) or Tanning Bed Hopping, Self-Tanning Lotions + Spray Tans (which are extremely toxic, BTW). When you know better, you do better.

Also, almost all natural, non-nano, mineral based Sunscreens may leave an old school, 50's Surfing-style 'white' cast on your skin. Sexy? Probably not. But, Safe? Yes! Opacity generally depends on the brand and protection level, and companies are constantly working to improve their formulas. Remember, Golden Girl… nothing looks as good as healthy feels! Trust me.

♥ The GG's Opinion: As with the rest of Yarok's products- I LOVE the clean labeling look + the scent of Fresh, Lemon Italian Ice that is synonymous with the rest of their styling line! Since I don't really blow dry my hair anymore unless I have to... and I've made the switch to all truly natural hair products- I don't really need a product like this as much as I originally thought I did. But, since I get LOTS of requests for Leave-in Conditioners + Thermal Protectors- I wanted to Review it. I don't necessarily find this to be a mind-blowing conditioner for my hair, so I don't use this when I let my hair air dry- simply because I really don't notice much of a difference. BUT, when I use this with as a heat protectant with a curling iron or hot rollers, I've noticed that my hair holds the curl a bit better, has definition and shine without feeling coated, heavy or greasy. I just use a spritz on each section of hair that I'm styling and it keeps my hair soft, shiny and protected. It gives me soft, frizzless curls! I haven't used a flat iron in forever- but imagine it would do the same thing if you straighten. I know the directions say to use this on damp hair- but I've found that it works best for me on dry hair, sprayed only onto the ends of sections I want to curl, just before I apply the heat. I admit that I was not completely impressed with this product from the get-go, but it worked much better once I figured out how to use it properly on my hair! ♥ How To: Deep Clean Your Makeup Brushes Naturally ♥

Ever feel like your skin is breaking out out of nowhere, or have watery eyes and can't figure out why?

You drink enough water, exercise, remind yourself to stop touching your face / eyes, eat healthier, and have tried every kind of contact solution or eye drops you can find, medicated, non-medicated and natural acne cleanser on the market- but still nothing seems to work... The culprit may quite possibly be your makeup brushes! Who knew?

Makeup brushes can harbor lots of yucky stuff like... oh, say old makeup residue, dead skin cells, germs from being sick (or not), toxins from sweat, oil, dirt, and bacteria... Umm, Ew! Cleaning your makeup brushes is also necessary to keeping them in tip-top shape... I have had some of mine for 10+ years and counting (all M.A.C.), because I take care of them really well. Hmmm... I guess the (not so) small fortune I paid was definitely worth the investment.

♥ How often?

Well, it actually depends on the brush.

A great rule of thumb is that any brush used on a liquid cosmetic (like concealer, foundation, eye primer, lipstick, cream eye shadow, etc.) should be cleaned EVERY SINGLE DAY. If you have sensitive, itchy, watery, allergy eyes- this will really help, I promise! It has worked wonders for me.

For all other brushes, they should be done at least once a week. Now, if I'm breaking out really badly- I will clean all of my brushes everyday until my skin clears up. I can't tell you what a difference this one little, simple habit alone has made on my skin! I usually try to do them at night when I wash my face before bed... so they can dry overnight. When I'm cleaning them once a week- I usually try to stay on a schedule (like on laundry or cleaning day) so I don't forget.

♥ Brownie Points If You...

Wipe down ALL of your makeup containers and the inside of your makeup case or bag at least once a week also. I use Rubbing Alcohol on a Wash Cloth. Whatever you do, DO NOT wipe down the handles of your makeup brushes with Rubbing Alcohol- it will ruin them! I currently have a fabric makeup bag and brush roll, so both can go right in the wash and I'm done, Ta-da!

♥ What You Need:

All of your makeup brushes.
I use Dr. Bronner's Baby Unscented Shikakai Soap (Organic Hand + Body)
A Sink! You'll Need Running Water.
A Dry Hand Towel
Toilet Paper, on the Roll.
Somewhere Flat to Lay Them to Dry.

A few little tips before we begin... Clean your brushes one at a time, using the same water temperature that you would use to wash our hair. Try to use something as natural as possible (like Baby Shampoo) without fragrance or dye- you can probably use whatever you use to wash your face, as long as there's nothing harsh in it. Don't scrub too hard (fragile like a flower LOL) and never stand your brushes up when they're wet! Always air dry your brushes- but in case you have a hot date at the last minute, you can blow dry them on a cool, low setting... promise to only do this in an emergency though :)

♥ Wash:

Wet your brush with the fluffy part pointing downwards so you don't get the "ferrule" (metal part which contains glue) wet or drip water down the handle .
Drop a tiny dot of the Dr. Bronner's Shikakai Soap into your hand.
Swirl the brush around gently in a circular motion and then switch it up.
Rinse the brush, while leaving the dirty Soap in your hand... remember, "like" removes "like". Check to see if the brush feels and looks clean. If not- repeat and rinse again. * If you're still having trouble- you can use a tiny dab of Olive Oil first to loosen up the makeup and then shampoo. (I tired this method and it worked, but it bothered my eyes a little. Lots of makeup artists seem to do this though).
If it's clean, rinse your hand and your brush thoroughly until the water runs clear.
Lay it flat on the dry towel and move on to the next brush.

♥ Dry:

Fold the towel over the brush head and gently press your brushes dry to rid them of any excess water.
For the handles... take the towel and go from the metal part towards the handle end and wipe. Now hold onto the handle end and go towards the brush end and wipe over the metal. Ta-Da, clean handles!
Take any brushes that get "too poofy" (like a Kabuki Brush) and loose their natural shape once they're dry, and set them aside (See * below).
Find a warm, dry place (sunny window sill works well) and lay down the towel.
Reshape the brush bristles to their original shape and lay them flat on the towel to dry.

* For the really fluffy ones that "Fro" (for example, my M.A.C. 217 Brush), use the T.P. Trick...

Take the brush and place it up against the toilet paper roll- and roll it up snugly (usually using anywhere between 1-3 squares, depending on brush size).
Rip it off, trying to keep the T.P. taught.
Now gently pull on the handle and slide the T.P. up over the fluffy part and place it with the rest of your brushes to dry.
Wait to remove the T.P. until your brushes are completely dry.

This simple ritual has dramatically changed my skin... more than any product ever has. Once you get into the habit- it's cake. There are also a ton of really great videos on YouTube to help you with this- a lot of them just happen to use harsh chemical brush cleansers- so I didn't want to include them.
