The Eyjafjallajökull Volcano in Iceland

People Watching the Volcano Spew Lava

The Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland has been all over the news the last couple of weeks. This is because of the natural phenomenon of it erupting and because of both its effects on humans and the natural environment. Its not that often that people get to see volcanoes erupt, so many people must find the geological event to be fascinating, however there are also economic implications from this eruption. The airline industry took a major hit because they had to cancel thousands of flights, both ones going to Europe and those leaving. Airports were shut down for nearly a week. The eruption has effected hundreds of thousands if not millions of people worldwide in some way or another.

The Eyjafjallajökull volcano also sits right by a huge glacier. The recent eruption caused extensive melting of the glacier and some major flooding. The eruption of the volcano caused some really rare electrical storms. The ash from the volcano has spread around the earth. Ash from the eruption has ruined millions of flowers in Kenya. The flower industry in Kenya is about 20 percent of their economy.

It's amazing to see how a volcano in Iceland erupting can effect so many people worldwide. This is definitely because of the globalization and interconnectedness of our world. People everywhere were effected either through travel, business, the actual ash from the volcano or the flooding caused by the eruption.

East Asia Opportunities

Right now I am majoring in Secondary Education- Geography and History and I also am planning on getting the Lutheran Teacher's Diploma. Coming out of college I would be very open to teaching overseas at one of the international schools or working through the LCMS in another teaching or missionary capacity. In addition to working through the LCMS I would be open to teaching for language corps for both the experience and the opportunity to witness to others about Christ.

The international schools in Hong Kong and Shanghai are owned by the LCMS. They serve as educational institutions for the synod offering schooling for grades preschool through high school. Their missions are to offer American-style education that is rooted in the Christian faith. Language Corps is an organization that gives people a variety of opportunities to teach English around the world. Language Corps considers their workers to be "citizen diplomats" who should appreciate other cultures and encourage cultural understanding among the people they work with. The LCMS also coordinates numerous missionary or international education opportunities.

The LCMS World Mission specifically deals with foreign ministry through partner church bodies around the world. The LCMS World Missions has missions work taking place in 88 countries worldwide. The focus of their work is obviously to spread Christ's love and the Gospel message to people worldwide, however their tasks vary from region to region. In Africa, LCMS World Mission focuses on training church leaders. In Asia, the attention is put on the education of people, especially through English instruction. In Latin America the emphasis is put on training missionaries who can evangelize throughout the region. Historically Europe has been very Christian, but less than 5 percent of Europeans attend church regularly. The goal in Europe is to bring people back to their Christian heritage.

The world continues to become more interconnected and it is very noticeable especially through opportunities people can have around the world. Even just teaching English can take you all around the world. The challenges of ministry are prevalent wherever one may go, but the hope in all of it is to bring people to Christ.

Bizarre Foods

The strangest thing that I have eaten would probably have to be alligator, which I had when I was down in Florida a few years ago. I cannot really think of anything too weird that I know of other people eating, except maybe my dad, who I'm pretty sure told me that he has had fried squirrel before. I think people around the world eat different kinds of things because early on, the people that shared their culture tried different things and decided to keep consuming them. I think with just about everything that is edible, it all depends on how it is fixed/cooked. Certain species that we Americans would find completely abnormal to our diets, could get fixed in a way that we like, therefore we could like it without knowing that we would otherwise not eat it.

One of the videos that I watched on the Bizarre Foods website, was with Andrew Zimmern eating poisonous toads in Australia. I found the video to be quite intriguing, I mean eating a species that is poisonous probably is not the easiest thing to work with. As I watched the part where the toads were getting cooked, I thought that I would probably be open to trying it. It looked as if the toad meat was prepared/fried like chicken, not that it would taste that way though.

Looking at what people will eat in the future, especially through the continued interconnectedness through globalization, it will be interesting to see how much diets around the world change. Part of the reason why diets are not the same around the world is because of the isolation of people/culture in certain parts of the world. Then the other part I would say is the unwillingness for certain things to be acceptable for eating in new places. The way in which food is prepared is very critical, at least I think, in how much it is consumed. As we move into the future I think slowly places like America will become more open to foreign diets and delicacies. I do also think that there will always be some distinct differences about diets all around the world, regardless of how interconnected the world becomes.
