Back in my heyday, I used to be quite the big deal in the FPS scene. Much the same as I am quite the big deal in the Melbourne Warhammer scene. NB: Tongue FIRMLY planted in cheek at the start of the post.

I loved the Call of Duty series and particularly this map.

Shipment is a small map ideal for quick and short games, like Free For All, in Call of Duty 4. It was cut from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, as it is found in the game files.

This map would quickly degenerate into total carnage and mayhem, especially in Free For All. It didn’t have long term playability but was always good for an hour or so fun. Logically, how can this not translate into a Wargames table?!

Infinity, unlike most other games I have played, has a really heavy reliance on terrain and cover. I found this out when I left two Morat Vanguard troops out in the open and in range of a Heavy Machine Gun! Thanks, noakesy!

Looking above, the table is fairly feature laden with a mix of hills, depressions and a heap of containers spread across it. At the moment I am in the prototype phase of building. I have a rough idea about how to build the containers (toilet paper fun ensues) and have made some progress in making some simple barriers to scatter around the table and offer much needed cover.

There’s not much too them. The basic shape was traced out on 5mmm foam core, cut out and buttresses are glued to the front. The buttresses are made from the off cuts, cut to shape and the whole thing is PVA glued down to card stock to give it some strength. Moving forward, a light application of sand to finish before painting.

There is a big push for Infinity in the local scene, particularly at Hampton Games Club, where I hang out. People are developing some awesome scenery to go along with the game, for example, the following:

Todays efforts. Detailed the outside of the 3 buildings with 2mm card, and made all floors and ceilings for them too. All ceilings are easily removable too. Next step is the planter boxes to rim the rooves, finish off the walkways between buildings, and same for the walkway entering the back of the market complex.

More update involving shipping containers and toilet paper soon! Thanks for reading!

For those of us paying attention, and the slow ones up the back of the class drifting off, I have embarked on yet another tabletop game.

Infinity is a 28mm skirmish level game set one hundred and seventy five years in Earth’s future. Thematically, it draws pretty heavily from Japanese animation with lots of robot looking suits running around blasting away at each other. What’s not to like?!

I have played a few games of Infinity so far and am really enjoying it. As one of my regular gaming buddies says, ” … it’s the way that Necromunda should have been.” I’m inclined to agree.

One thing that I have noticed about Infinity is the very heavy reliance on cover to protect your troops. Models standing out in the open are really in a lot of trouble.

Which leads to the question of which army to play?

… a new threat, perhaps the most terrible of all, has managed to form a bridgehead in the heart of the Human Sphere. A Combined Army of alien races, united beneath the dominance of an Evolved Intelligence, an ancient but supreme artificial intellect with hegemonic aspirations with respect to any race that crosses its path.

Wow. That was an easy decision to make.

As with any new game, there’s a process of figuring out how it works and what style of play suits. Close combat is not a major feature of the rules, so it looks like a pretty shooty game.

I started with the Combined Army starter boxset and, after selling my Hordes miniatures, picked up a few extra models. There’s a mix of aliens available in the combined army, but my list is built around the red faced Morat soldiers. In my first games, the Heavy Machine gun is a total winner, so that’s an auto-include. However, each troop eats up SWC (Special Weapons Cost). Every fifty point block give you 1 point of SWC. A 250 point force has five SWC points.

Each force has to have a Lieutenant, and the Morat Lieutenant cost me two SWC points! The HMG armed trooper cost me one SWC point and the remaining points are split between a Hacker for doing nasty things to enemy electronic devices and a lone Sniper.

From my understanding of the game, I’m happy with this build and looking forward to using it more and getting a feel for this new and interesting game!

Finally, the list in complete form looks like this:

Morat 250 point force
Orders: 10

Morat » Lieutenant SWC:2.0 Cost:16
Yaogat Strike Infantry » MULTI Sniper Rifle SWC:1.5 Cost:42
Zerat » Hacker (Hacking Device) SWC:0.5 Cost:33
Daturazi Witch-Soldier » Combi RifleSmoke Grenade SWC:0.0 Cost:23
Morat » HMG SWC:1.0 Cost:25
Morat » Combi Rifle SWC:0.0 Cost:16
Morat » Combi Rifle SWC:0.0 Cost:16
Morat » Combi Rifle SWC:0.0 Cost:16
Morat » Combi Rifle SWC:0.0 Cost:16
Morat » Combi Rifle SWC:0.0 Cost:16

Total SWC: 5.0 Total Points: 219

What on earth do I spend 11 points on?!

Okay, my hobby attention deficit disorder kicks into overdrive with the delivery the other day of 2.odd kilograms of lead. That’s rigt, ladies and gentlemen, twenty Marine Terminators and four Dreadnoughts. Two of the Dreadnoughts are the Marine dreadnoughts, two are the Dark Angel Dreadnoughts and both have a mix of weapons.

Lots of choices available, weapons wise, and by injecting the odd Land Raider or two, there’s you army ready to go.

Having a look through the Dark Angels codex there are a couple of things that I need to think about when putting together a Deathwing army. Primarily, the army has to have Belial in it to make the Deathwing a Troop choice (as well as an Elites choice). In a normal Space Marine army, your general can be mounted on a bike and this makes bikers troop choices, not so for Terminator armour! It’s Dark Angels all the way.

I have always liked the idea of a few lone Scouts infiltrating an enemy’s lines before calling down the big guns. I’m definitely putting a couple of units of Scouts into the army, probably five man squads with sniper rifles for a bit of long range damage until all the army is fully deployed. The only thing that I don’t understand about the Dark Angels is their Scouts are Elite choices! The most inexperienced warriors appear in the same force list slot as Company Vetrans.

Much like Chaos Daemons and their “Preferred Wave”, Deathwing get to choose half of the squads taken (rounding up) to do a Deep Strike on the player’s first turn. The other half stay in reserve. Unlike the Chaos Daemons, there is no associated role to figure out what is available; the Deathwing Assault is always the troops selected.

I have my on-again-off-again Space Marine project and have developed a paint scheme that I am really happy with. The split scheme is an interesting challenge and I think that I have my secret recipe all sorted out so that replicating it across a number of troops shouldn’t be too much of a problem.

Now I just need to figure out a playable army list …

Okay. It’s time to admit that I have a problem. I’m not the only one, but I’m the only one admitting it here. I have hobbyius in extremis. Or, in plain English, “Oooh, look! Something new and awesome to buy!”
I’ve just sold my Circle Orboros warpack and used the money to buy some Infinity Combined army Morats and a Bloody Barnabas and Calaban figure to start a Hordes Minions army.
It’s time to say, “ENOUGH, games and miniatures producers! Stop making such awesome rulesets and miniatures that make me crave like a ravenous craving … thing.”

What? Do you really think it’s my fault?

Back in the day, it was all about the Warhammers. I am personally responsible for consuming nearly three kilos of Skaven miniatures, at least six whole figures of which were painted before finally throwing in the towel and off loading them.
These days, you can’t throw a D6 without hitting a new games company who will happily “hook you up”. Diverse choices like Warmachine and Hordes, Malifaux, Infinity, Warpath and Bushido to name but a few!
My disease has me sprawling out in all directions and I will publicly list my shame, or more accurately my incomplete projects here for all to see. Hopefully this will keep me a bit focused on stuff I should be doing!
In no particular order, the list (taken largely from this site!) …

Bloodbowl Goblin team

Bloodbowl Necromantic team

Bloodbowl Ogre team

Warhammer 40000 Space Marine army (1750 points)

Warhammer 40000 Dark Eldar army (1750 points)

Warhammer 40000 Deathwing army (1750 points)

Warhammer Fantasy Battle Wood Elf army (2500 points)

Malifaux Resurrectionists (35 Soulstones)

Malifaux Gremlins (35 Soulstones)

Infinity Combined army (250 points)

Infinity Bakunin Jurisdictional Command (250 points)

Bushido Temple of Ro-Kan

Dark Age Outcasts

Hordes Minions (35 points)

Other random models that looked like they would be fun

I am also in the process of disposing of a Warhammer Ogres army (probably!), and have successfully sold or traded A Hordes Circle Orboros warpack and a Warhammer Chaos Warriors army.

Okay, there’s my shame for all to see. Having had a look at it, I’m pretty pleased! There’s a HEAP of work to do across a range of models, settings and even scales (technically). How can I be pleased, you ask? It means that if I get bored of painting fantasy footballers, for example, I can always switch to painting evil Space Elves! So, my hobbyius in extremis should be more than enough to keep me amused for the foreseeable future.

It’s pretty awesome, really. There are worse diseases to have; I had this one friend who ….

Really, really bad news today! Realm of Legends my F-not-so-L-G-S (it’s a forty five minute drive away!) is shutting down. It’s their fault I started buying Bushido miniatures, bought a Warhammer Chaos army and countless other bits and pieces. Both Ross and Maria were friendly and knowledgeable about their stock and their customers. Realm of Legends was also one of the biggest venues for tournaments in the Southern hemisphere with fifty tables and terrain permanently setup for play.

They will certainly be missed by many of the Melbourne gaming scene!

It is with sad hearts that Ross & I along with our treasured staff announce the closing of Realm of Legends.

Sunday the 15th of April will be the last trading day for Realm of Legends.

The last 3.5 years has been an amazing rollercoaster ride. It’s been a huge struggle at times, running a Bricks & Mortar store through the Global Financial Crisis, which has also seen the rise of online only businesses operating with lower overheads. And yet at other times we have been able to see the fantastic support offered to us by some members of the community. To look out across our shop and see 100+ people having an absolute blast has been among our highlights.

We have met some wonderful people through running Realm of Legends, you guys know who you are, and you have made Realm of Legends a community, a family really. Be assured we will still be around.

We apologise to those that have made it their 2nd home and to those who had yet to become part of the RoL community.

For tournaments that are booked in at the store we are working with the TO’s to either help find them a new venue or organise refunds to players that have signed up

We will have more information on our website after Tuesday.

Maria & Ross Armstrong

To them and their family, I wish them all the very best in whatever they choose to do next!

On another note, patronize your FLGS. It can’t be easy having a bricks and mortar store in the modern age. Places like Realm of Legends and the facilities they provide allow us to play the toy soldiers we know and love. Their prices can’t compete with the internet, as such, but the community and the environment and the atmosphere they provide more than makes up for it.

As part of my self confessed hobby attention deficit disorder, I find that I am in possession of stupid amount of miniatures that are
a) painted and gathering dust
b) still waiting to be taken from whatever packaging they were purchased in and gathering dust; or,
c) Taken from said packaging, assembled, looked at, and put away on a shelf to gather dust.

Maybe I should enter the lucrative and exciting world of dust commodities …

In order to clean up a bit in the mancave, I have to part with the following:
Kaya Wildborne

All four of these superbly crafted miniatures are painted well above tabletop standard and have significant work done to the bases (the bases of the Argus have been cleaned up of excess paint).

The paint scheme is away from the boring, stock standard and has taken on a more autumnal theme, heavily using red as the feature colour with brown accents. Many other players out there would be envious of such a radical deviation from the norm. The good news is, that the scheme is simple to replicate and if you contact me in the comments below, I will gladly share it.

These wonderful miniatures can be yours by clicking the “Buy Now” button below. As an added bonus, I will ship worldwide for FREE! This is not an auction, there is no reserve; just a fixed price. First in best dressed! In fact, comment below to show off your purchase.

These fine examples of a Hordes warpack are now listed on eBay! Quick, buy now!

+++UPDATE+++ The Warpack has been sold and will be winging it’s way to it’s new home in the next couple of days! Congratulations to the winner!

Upon purchase, the miniatures will be shipped out within two working days.
Every effort will be made to ship them as safely and securely as possible, however, there is no way for me to account for what the postal service does!

Into this:

Starting with the cardboard tube. There isn’t much in the way of measurement, the tree base doesn’t require too much accuracy. The length is about six inches long, ideally being line of sight blocking. Chunks are gouged from the top to add more interest to the texture of the finished product. Another option would be to glue some broken up ice cream sticks around the top to achieve the same result.

All good scenery needs a base and old CDs make a really good base. Cardboard tends to warp badly when PVA glue and/or water are applied. The tree is glued down with Superglue to make sure it bonds properly.

Now the fun starts. Who doesn’t love playing with what is, effectively, paper mache?! Apply PVA glue liberally to the inside of the tree where the bottom meets the CD and push toilet paper. In the end product, this is the base of the tree stump. From there work upwards towards the lip of the tube. Liberal amounts of PVA are important to soak into the toilet paper and dry hard.

Once the outside has been covered in PVA and toilet paper, the whole thing can be covered in watered down PVA glue to add additional sealing to the end product.

Once the whole thing is dry, and it does take a while, the painting begins.
Over a black undercoat that has dried properly, being a very liberal drybrush of an appropriate colour. Some research in Google will give and idea of the sorts of colours needed.
I have been painting toy soldiers for many years. I used some very old Spearstaff Brown as the basis and then once this had dried properly, added some Bleached Bone to the base colour and drybrushed the lighter colour over the top.
Once all this has dried, additional foliage can be added. The face is built of more toilet paper and PVA glue to roughly shape the features.

How easy is scenery?

The VICC was held on the weekend at Latrobe University, Bundoora. The VICC was dreamt up by the good people a WGoL to give the clubs around Victoria the opportunity to face off against one another allowing one o reign supreme over all others. Yes, the VICC was taken out by Hampton Games Club this year and they were fortunate enough to have the Warhammer 40000 powerhouse that I am representing them. The internet is not the most apt tool for conveying sarcasm, unfortunately.
Regrettably, I was only able to make the first day of the tournament. This saw clubs facing off against each other in one-on-one games. Hampton faced off against GROTS, TWAT and Outpost Gaming.
My list looked something like http://cmdctr.net/lists/774 and I think that my fears about Chaos being under-powered are still there, but not as much. Sixth edition impending and a new Chaos Codex will definitely help.

Of the three games, two were objective based and one was Kill Points.
Game 1 – Andrew from GROTS.
One of my favourite things about VICC was playing a whole heap of opponents who I have never faced before. Andrew was one such example. The army was good looking, if a little too reminiscent of a Dark Angel army using the Blood Angel rules! His list (roughly) contained:

Mephiston
Sanguinary Priest
Librarian
Assault marines (no Jump Packs) in a Landraider
Assault marines with Jump Packs
Tactical Squad with Lascannon
Vindicator
Devestator Squad with 5 Missile Launchers
Three bikers with Meltagun and Powerfist

Andrew has gained some infamy in the tournament scene by taking Mephiston in a 1200 point army. This prompted one of the Melbourne Tournament scene’s elder statesmen, and all around nice guy, to be quoted as saying, “Mephistion is a C#NT!” I have to agree. In 1500 points, he is a monster and the delivery system just has to get him into close combat and then stand around drinking Pina Coladas.
However, my main threats were the Vindicator and the Landraider, completely apart from Mephiston. I deployed two Obliterators in a firing position on top of a building and spent some time trying to blow both of them into non-existance. Thankfully, I was successful, but not before both hit the middle of the table and delivered their payload. The Vindicator spent one turn not able to fire and then was destroyed.
An astute reader might well ask, where was Mephiston? He was using one of his multitude of psychic powers to wing his way across the table.
The middle of the table turned into a mosh pit where the Assault marines, Librarian (who managed to double 1 his “Sword” psychic power and lose his remaining wound) and Sanguinary Priest were having a party with two squads of Plague Marines, Typhus and an Obliterator.
My Chosen melta squad rocked up in turn two and moved towards the centre of the board only to get Mephiston-ed into the middle of next week. Based on Mephiston’s performance and reputation, he got target priority after the mosh pit had been cleared up and I had emerged the victor. In fact, he got so much target priority that I shot all of my army on the table at him. For two turns! And when I say everything, I mean, twin linked bolters on Rhinos, Lascannons from Obliterators; in fact, everything but the kitchen sink before the bastard died!
There are games that you pray will end on the fifth turn and this one did. I had accounted for Mephiston and the party on the objective. Andrew had terrible dice on his Lascannon and Devastator marines, both of whom stayed well out of the fray.
At the end of the game, I had a Rhino undamaged on top of the objective and the remnants of two squads as well. The mission objective was to have the most Kill Points holding the target at the end of the game. Andrew’s remaining troops were too far away to get in and either kill my troops or contest the objective.
Win to me.
The Typhus report: He did nothing spectacular and died pretty easy. At the very least, he didn’t get his points back. Deep Striking with even one Obliterator helped to keep him alive for longer. He really, really feels not having Eternal Warrior.

Fresh off the win in the first round, Hampton found itself facing TWAT; a gaming club based in Geelong. At this point, I’d like to make a recommendation for players in the Geelong area; go play at TWAT! They’re a great bunch of guys and I had a really enjoyable game against Jason Murdock.

Game 2 – Jason from TWAT
Jason was bringing the pain Eldar style. Yo! There were lots of guys in tanks that ran away from me for five turns and then decided to come play. The Fire prism was deployed too close to the edge and some lucky rolling saw me out flank my Chosen right near it and proceed to melta it’s ass off! The mission was an interesting game of radioactive objectives that would wound on a 4+ with a -1 save. Feel No Pain was a life saver as I sat on top of objectives (again) and waited for the Eldar to decide to fight.
I was especially not fond of a squadron of War Walkers that hosed down whole units. Eldar are scary at range.
Five turns of back and forth saw a win to me as I contested two of the three objectives and held one uncontested.
Details are missing from this game, however, Jason’s army is beautiful (that of it that’s finished!) and I’d love to play it again. He was absolutely the best game of Warhammer I’ve had in a while.
The Typhus report: Deep Strike with two Obliterators near to the Eldar. They didn’t retreat far enough and despite a heap of fire that dropped the Obliterators, Typhus was able to reach combat, ate a squad of Fire Dragons and promptly died as everything with a gun shot him. It did help to distract Jason from shooting the rest of my army, so Typhus achieved a posthumous moral victory.

Two wins from two games! I’ve never won two games in a row. Come to think about it, I don’t think I’ve ever WON two games.

Game 3 – Mitchell from Outpost Gaming
Thanks to my team mates and a mix of wins and draws, we were looking pretty strong going into the third round. Go back, re-read that last sentence and underline and bold the word “were”. Outpost Gaming were our third game, my matchup was against Mitchell who also played Eldar. Unlike Jason, Mitchell’s list had two War Walkers and an Avatar, a unit of Rangers, some Dire Avengers and a squad of Guardians with a weapon platform. It was during this Kill Point mission that I had my brain fart and snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.
I’m not sure if Mitchell meant to or not, but at the end of the fifth turn there was very little left on the board. In a fit of heroic bravery, I threw Typhus at an Avatar who made all his invulnerable saves and didn’t let me suck his soul from his … erm … body? The rest is largely academic; Typhus got pasted again!
My brain fart moment came as sixth turn started. I was lobbing Havoc shells at the Rangers in cover hoping for the occasional cover save fail, completely forgetting that in a Kill Points mission Rhinos count as kill points. Mitchell went on a Rhino busting spree that saw me lose three in one turn. Instead of winning by a kill point I lost by ONE KILL POINT!
Pay attention to the mission, pay attention to the mission, runforwardandtryandkillthings … DAMMIT!

What did I learn?
I am really enjoying the Chaos list I have built. Toughness five and Feel No Pain make it difficult for opponents to shift you from objectives.
Chosen in a Rhino with five Meltaguns and Outflanking is risky (waiting for the reserve roll and then rolling for the table edge), but it’s a no brainer for the heavy tank or gribbly hiding in the deployment zone. Being five Meltaguns, the opponent can’t ignore them if they have other priority targets in their deployment zone. The only other option that I would deploy the Chosen with is the Mark of Nurgle. In the three games I played, it was the big guns being broght to bear, so I don’t think it would make a terribly big difference to their survivability.

I missed the second day’s play and so I have second hand accounts of how it went. In the final points tally, Hampton Games Club finished … fifth in Warhammer 40000. Not the best showing but combined with our very strong showing in both Warhammer and Warmachine lead HGC to be crowned the VICC champions of 2012. (Evidence follows!)

The VICC format is a unusual in that, it’s a team game but you play singles on the first day and doubles on the second. At the start of each round the team captains are given four missions that have to be allocated to each of the four players. You have no idea what mission will best suit your army up until that point and guessing your opponent is nigh on impossible. It sounds really bad, but I think that the tournament really worked well and I am looking forward to coming back next year.

Zone Mortalis is an interesting development from Forgeworld.

The following rules expansion for Warhammer 40,000 deals with some of the most savage arenas of combat conceivable, the battlefields the Codex Tactica Imperialis refers to as ‘Zone Mortalis’ — the fatal ground. Such zones be they the contested decks of a void warship, tangled mine works, lightless underhives, the prison-vaults of sundered fortress citadels, labyrinthine industrial sewer systems and sacred catacombs, all have a confluence of factors in common such as close-confinement, limited access for attack or escape routes, as well as treacherous environments, which make them murderous venues for warfare.

Zone Mortalis looks a bit like a cross between Space Hulk and Necromunda; two of my favourite Games Workshop game systems. Now, if they could only get a football in there some how …

It’s not officially approved, and make numerous mentions to it. I am not going to make any stupid sweeping remarks like I did with Man O’ War, however, reading the rules one rule leapt out at me.

REACTION FIRE (OPTIONAL)
The confined spaces of a Zone Mortalis make for deadly, close range fire-fights, where a split second reaction may be enough to gun down an enemy rushing out from the darkness before death strikes you down. In order to represent this, this special rule allows units being assaulted a chance to fire their shooting weapons when they are assaulted — if they’re fast enough!
• Only units not already engaged in close combat may attempt reaction fire.
• Only pistol, assault and rapid fire weapons may be used for reaction fire attacks. Heavy weapons may only be used for reaction fire attacks if the model carrying them has the Relentless special rule.
• A unit may only make a single reaction fire attack against the first unit they are assaulted by in any given turn.
• A reaction fire attack is made after an assault is declared, but before assaulting models have moved. Casualties resulting from reaction fire may cause an assault to fail.

Making a Reaction Fire Attack: In order to make a reaction fire attack, the unit in question must first roll equal to or under its majority Initiative score on a D6. If successful it may fire its weapons at the assaulting enemy, just as it would in the Shooting phase but at -1 BS (minimum BS 1). Template weapons are used as normal if the Initiative test is successful.
A unit may not use the Counter Attack special rule if it has used reaction fire.

I don’t know about you, dear reader, but this sounds a little like the Overwatch rules from the old Rogue Trader days. Given some of the rumours floating around in regard to the new edition of Warhammer 40000, this correspondent thinks that this would be a pretty awesome inclusion into a rule set that, again according to rumour, is going to be very much focussed around the assault phase.

Keep watching the skies!

Termicide Warhammer 40K noun or verb USAGE: I unleashed Termicide all over my opponent.

Termicide is, in the Warhammer 40000 tabletop game, the unleashing of a small unit of Chaos (in particular) Terminators loaded for tank hunting. Or bear, depending on which is bigger. Normal Chaos tactics employ three Terminators in a squad Deep Striking well within enemy lines, ideally near a big, expensive tank or suitably unlucky character and hosing them down with multiple shots from combi-meltas, instantly slagging them back to the Stone Age.

REF: Ratboy’s Book of Arcane Anachronisms – 40K Edition

The above evil tactic, employed by Chaos players, is one that has really fired the random destructive part of my brain. This is the same part of my brain that sees me being convinced that five Chosen armed with Meltaguns and mounted in an Outflanking Rhino will be a total game changer at the VICC tournament this weekend.

Yes, quite.

The well known tactic as detailed above requires Deep Striking a small unit of Terminators optimised for one fantastic, shining moment of total tank destruction before being utterly annihilated by an opponent in their following turn. Either that or, once the Meltagun shot is used, they are completely ignored as their threat level is now the equivalent of a Gretchin with a slingshot.

Another viable configuration is arming one (or more) of the Terminators with a Chainfist making them still a serious threat for other tanks left nearby. The squad probably weighs in at about 120 points and should distract my opponent for at least a turn blowing them away. For added single turn destruction, add two additional Terminators with combi-plasma.

However, the models are still Terminators and therefore, have terminator-esque survivability. Also, they are equipped with power weapons, so the annoyance value in close combat also remains.

The other fun fact; whilst shooting the Termicide squad, my opponent is NOT shooting other things that maybe more important. Like objective capturing troops!

I am erring on the side of caution here and investing in three Terminators. Two have combi-meltas, one has a Chainfist and the other has two Lightning Claws.

The two Lightning Claw armed terminator was an old model from when I was enthusiastic about a Death Guard first company. The downside to this is that I have forgotten what recipe I used to paint him.

There isn’t much in the way of conversions on the other two and no significant greenstuffing. There’s another zombie head swap (best kit ever, GW!), and that’s about it.
